This week's new film are somewhat overshadowed by both the re-releases and the TV box-sets but there is still plenty of good stuff about (discounting Made Of Honour of course) with the head of the pack being Woody Allen's much maligned but excellent Cassandra's Dream (reviewed here). Elsewhere there is Neil Young's concert documentary CSNY Deja Vu and the pretty good Ghengis Khan biopic Mongol.

Moving onto the re-releases, this week sees two notoriously censor-baiting films getting full on special edition treatments. First up, is the tour de force of cinematic uncomfort that is Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom. Pasolini's 1975 reworking of the Marquis De Sade's book sees a group of Italian fascists humiliate and torture a group of young men and women and is grim stuff indeed but, if you can sit through it, there is a method to the madness. Not one for repeat viewing (once is enough) but the release is crammed with enough info and insight about the film (including a very good Mark Kermode documentary) it is still worth space on your shelf.

Then we have Caligula. Just as notorious for it's violence and sexual content (again packaged with enough extra / background material to warrant a purchase) this is a film that veers between the striking and the inane with a decent dollop of the insane thrown in - this adds up to a wildly uneven must see mess.

The final re-release (ish) this week is Zodiac: The Director's Cut. To be honest with you the extra four minutes are pretty much negligible but it is a masterful film (Fincher's best in my view) and instead of the last vanilla disc this version is packaged with a feature length documentary about the real life case and plenty to get your teeth into regarding the production itself.

Plenty of good stuff on the TV front as well this week with Jericho: Series 2 bringing the nuclear bomb drama to a satisfying (if not as good as hoped) ending but the real gem is ITV's Lost In Austen. After years of Austen adaptations and BBC's success with Life On Mars, it must have seemed like a bit of a commissioning no-brainer ("we've already got the costumes!") to send a modern girl into the near sacred Pride and Prejudice and wait for hilarity to ensue. Of course this sounds positively awful but in a stroke of content over concept it was actually a very entertaining series crammed full of interesting plot twists, insightful humour and a willingness to upset some (if not all) of our expectations.

I am a movie buff. I love watching movies, and well, after a long and tiring day, a great movie and ice cream can lighten up my mood. Sadly, though, since I started work and became busy and whatever, I missed a lot of good and not so good movies. Sigh. So now, I try to make up for the lost movies by buying DVDs and watching them at home.

I just watched Made of Honour today. I know, I know, the movie’s a cookie cutter romantic movie but well, I lurrrrv it! Haha. I found her surprisingly charming and she has chemistry with my mcdreamy. I love their tandem. She’s perfect for the character she played in the movie.

I’m actually afraid to watch romantic films again because of my mode (haha), but this movie made me smile and not bitter.

It’s funny ’cause I can really relate to Hannah in the movie, being Tom’s date during his father’s wedding. I do that a lot. I have been a date to a dinner one time, a proxy to a guy’s girlfriend because his girlfriend can’t make it to this event.

I am every guy’s best friend. And that’s not just based on interpretation. They really surprise me by telling me I am their “best friend”. I realize, just now, that I am closer to guys than girls. Nope, I don’t have gender issues. I don’t really know why or how but we all get along fine- them boys and I.. Although some of them become my boyfriends after the friendship (aha! motives. :D).

The other night my guy friend and I were talking about our relationships. He is a grade school friend, which means I have been friends with him for more than a decade. We witnessed how we turned from skinny, stinky kids to who we are now (definitely not skinny and stinky anymore). He now has a girlfriend, FINALLY, after years of trying to move on from his ex who happens to be a close friend also. I said I don’t really like the idea of him having a girlfriend whom I don’t know. I mean, he is my male counterpart. He is everybody’s guy friend. And now that he has a girlfriend- who is by the way, not part of our group. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the idea. He told me he wishes the girl and I would be close, although she is not our material, he said he really wants us to be close. I told him I can’t imagine him marrying that girl- yes, we’re talking about marriage now. He said he doesn’t see the future with her yet, although he thinks they may have a future. They may. And then I told him, “I don’t know, I’ve always imagined you marrying someone familiar. Someone you grew up with. An old friend. Someone you’re used to. “ He said, “Yeah. Like you.” And then I laughed out loud and said, “Quit it. We’re siblings.”

He told me he also feels the same for me- that I am bound to marry someone I know so well, and I also feel the same way. I feel like I’m the type who marries an old friend. Not because it’s safer, but because, well, I think friendship is a good foundation. I don’t know if I want to marry someone I am not familiar with. Oh well. This is now. I’m sure my thoughts would change in the next 3 years or so.

Sometimes it’s hard that my guy friends would feel jealous whenever I am dating someone new. I mean, I am their movie partner, dinner date, shopping partner, gift consultant. I have been dragged to a very far place just so I could accompany a friend to a funeral. Stuff like that.

One thing’s for sure, though. I am most sure that if someone tries to hurt me or whatever, these guys would be to the rescue. Tested and found true.

Saw the movie today... The movie has a very neat beginning. Tells you what the situation is exactly! And then as a usual mushy movie, gets on with the love thing. The locales in Scotland are beautiful and amazing. The range rovers are classy, so is the scotch (so they say). Beyond all of this, it's a classic Hindi love triangle movie, where the bride switches her mind at the very last second and choose a guy who's apparently the lesser guy.

So, that how it goes. Nothing special! Indians won't feel a thing if they don't see it and firangs should not have a problem digesting this one!

He plays a likeable, successful man named Tom who has a lot of luck with plenty of girls but little with the girl he actually likes. This time that girl is his best friend, Hannah, who he realises he’s in love with only after she decides to get married to a Scottish billionaire named Colin. So, when she asks him to be her ‘Made of Honour’, he travels to Scotland to win her back. Sounds like a film version of the ‘Rachel going to win Ross back’ episodes, doesn’t it? However, we’re not so sure whether it will end as badly... for Dempsey, that is. The best review it’s got says it’s a 'nice cookie-cutter comedy'.

I caught this flick last night. A guy version of "My Bestfriend's Wedding" albeit with a twist at the end. Though predictable, it was charming and quite funny in its own unique way. At long last, Patrick Dempsey got his revenge from being dumped in "Sweet Home Alabama" as Reese Witherspoon's fiance.

If you want some feel-good movie, this one is highly recommended.

okay. so first things first.

WHERE HAVE ALL MY READERS GONE??! :( for the past four days, my blog stats have been consistently low :( i feel so unloved. and therefor you are not getting a proper update >:(

.. you get REVIEWS instead! :)

i saw The Incredible Hulk :D

...

but what can i say, between Ironman and The Incredible Hulk, i'd take Ironman any freaking day. for one thing, Ironman had Gwyneth Paltrow; Hulk has Liv Tyler. Ironman had an awesome, sexy costume; Hulk is .. a large green computer-generated monster thing. Ironman was charming, arrogant, self-assured, sarcastic, and a womanizing multi-millionaire; the Hulk is .. a poor, angry refugee.

but okay. no need to get all bias and stuff :)

so the movie starts off with a flashback. why do all movies start off with flashbacks? anyway, we're treated to a full-blown account on what created the creature that is the Hulk, which is a large green thing born from the explosion of some gamma rays thing, who is now the property of the United States government, and has been missing in action ever since the accident in the lab.

our Hulk is Bruce Banner (sigh typical superhero names: Peter Parker, Clark Kent), shown relaxing in Brazil, and taking meditative lessons to keep his emotions under control. because as we all know, when he gets angry, he turns into the Hulk.

"don't make me hungry .. you won't like me when i'm hungry," mistaking angry for hungry, thanks to his incompetence at speaking Portugese, in the movie.

he's looking for a cure to his condition, and asks help from an online acquaintance, Mr Blue (oh and our Hulk himself is Mr Green), and sends him a blood sample. at the same time, General Joe has assembled a team of fighters to capture the Hulk, and one of them, Blonsky, turns out to be somewhat semi-psychotic and crazy about a good fight.

with the US army hot on his trails, and a psychotic anti-Hulk (the Abomination), and while trying to find an antidote, and saving the city AND maintaining a good relationship with girlfriend Elizabeth Ross, our Hulk has it rough.

it's not as good as Ironman, but it's still very entertaining :) speaking of Ironman, towards the end of the movie, our other anti-hero Tony Stark makes a brief apprearance ;)

oops. that was a spoiler haha :P

...

i also saw Made of Honour <3

...

and between Made of Honour and Enchanted, i'd choose Enchanted any time. but whatever, i mean, Patrick Dempsey, like ohmigawd, McDreamyyy, McMarryMe.

but anil liked the movie. because apparently it reminded him of .. us. like every song in the movie, Dashboard C. 'Stolen', Oasis 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out'. and the part where she locks him out, and tells him through the door that she can't trust him, and that he only wants her now because he's afraid of losing her. and the part where he kept quiet about having feelings for her. and the 10 years of friendship thing, except in our case it's been 10 years since i've known him, that's all.

this movie is about Tom, a serial dater who never wants to settle down, who sleeps with a different girl every night of the week, and has rules for them about not getting too attached emotionally (Don't Sleep with The Same Girl Two Nights In A Row, etc) and Hannah, his best friend of ten years, who believes in marriage but just hasn't found Mr. Right.

when she goes away on a business trip to Scotland, it starts to dawn upon him just how much he misses her when she's gone, and he realizes that he actually has feelings for her. and maybe, just maybe, he's relationship material, after all.

Tom decides to tell her how he feels when she returned home to New York. except for one thing. she's engaged. and getting married. like, ASAP.

she asked him to be her "maid" of honour, and he reluctantly agrees, because that seems to be the only way to break off the marriage, steal the bride, and win the game.

yeah, the first five minutes into the movie, you already know what's going to happen and who's going to hook up with who and how it'll work out in the end. but still! it's McDreamy, okay, so whatever <3

there ARE good moments in the movie, but because it's so formulaic, you can't help feeling a little cheated. it tries a little too hard at making you go 'aww', and it doesn't seem to care about making you laugh at all. i mean, it's supposed to be a romantic comedy, isn't it?

but all is forgiven. because. they've got McDreamy ;)

I watched this movie 2 days ago. it was cliche. It was predictable. It was nothing special but just another romantic comedies movie.

This is the snopsis taken from msn.com..

A handsome and successful bachelor is taken aback when his dream girl asks him to be the "maid" of honor in her upcoming wedding in this romantic comedy starring Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan. Tom (Dempsey) and Hannah (Monaghan) have been best friends for years. Though all the hard times, Hannah has been the one constant in Tom's life, and the one person he knows he can always rely on. When Hannah leaves for a six-week business trip in Scotland, Tom is surprised to realize how truly lonely he is without her. Life just isn't the same without Hannah around, so the moment she returns Tom resolves to ask for her hand in marriage. But apparently Hannah's trip wasn't all business, because upon returning home Hannah announces that she has gotten engaged to a dashing Scotsman and will soon be starting a new life overseas. She's convinced that Tom will be thrilled for her, and wants him to play a crucial role in the wedding. His spirits crushed but his love for Hannah stronger than ever before, Tom reluctantly agrees to be the "maid" of honor so that he can prove his love in no uncertain terms and convince her to call off the wedding before true happiness slips through his fingers. ~ Jason Buchanan

Yep, as i go through the synopsis.. i think the story is ala bollywood which always about man chasing gurl things. I hope it is not harsh to say that this movie is made by recycling some other movies script.. NOT ORIGINAL AT ALL. This is a romance-comedy movie.. with some sexual jokes..rated PG-13 for sexual content and language

I think we are tired with this type of movie..but i believe there are still some of you who are the hard fans for such a movie..no wonder Film Prof maadya Abdul Razak success in Malaysia. haha. I mean.. there are still a positive side after all. This kind of thing..man chasing girl are actually happen in our life or society..therefore maybe thats what draw people to watch this movie..to watch their life in screen.

Well.. we believe we must try what ever it takes to get or steal our dream girl..thats the message of this movie.huhu. In this movie.. Hannah is about to married a Scotsman.. the guy he met in Scotland(during her 6 weeks trip).. they r crazy about each other..and Tom(hero) is crazy about Hannah, which he just realized after Hannah went to her trip.. during that time Tom really misses and feel the love for her.

When Hannah back..Tom decide to get into serious relationship with Hanah. But.. it cant be happen..coz Hannah already in serious relationship..haha.too late for Tom.

One of the best thing about Tom is how he plays wit his expression. Some of the scene i found he is funny by just looking at his face. Michelle Monaghan(Hannah) is cute and sweet.. i dont see many expression or emotional from her acting..but since this movie is cliche..so i know her feelings from the beginning.

For guys who want to rise your spirit in hunting or stealing your dream girl.. this movie can do a little help..maybe.

Overal. You get what you expected. As long as you didnt expect something out of ordinary.

I remember it well. When Patrick Dempsey stepped into the interview room, neatly dressed in a black, smart casual suit, it was as if the air was suddenly electrified. I was supposed to interview Dempsey for the movie Enchanted, but all I could think about as he approached the table was, "OMG, he's going to sit next to me!! Squee!!!"

It took a lot of iron will for me to be professional and not to melt into a puddle of goo when he smiled and greeted us journos, but Lord, he was so close, you know?

That's Patrick Dempsey's "it" factor, the effect he has on the ladies, no matter how rational we pride ourselves to be. Little wonder that he's branching out into the romantic comedy/drama category. Girls wanna see more of that side of him. And movie moguls know that he has it in him to pull in the female demographic.

His recent offering, Made of Honor (or Honour, as it's spelt in Malaysia), fits the bill, but is it any good? Here's my review from the paper:

I am uncomfortable with movies where the main goal of the protagonist is to snatch away the bride/bridegroom. It just seems so ... rude. But for Patrick Dempsey? Well, I’ll bend my standards a little.

McDreamy is a playboy with a gorgeous best friend. But like all men (just kidding!), he doesn’t see what a gem he has until the said gem goes to Scotland and snags herself a blue-blooded Scotsman with several castles and a fortune under his belt. So Tom Bailey says yes to Claire’s emasculating request to make him her maid of honour and flies to Scotland to win her heart.

Can the power and charisma of Mr McDreamy make this movie a surefire hit? Yes and no. Yes, because legions of females will see the movie despite what I say, and no, because, well, this movie is simply too formulaic to offer the viewer anything challenging.

Made of Honour is the cookie cutter chic flick that fulfils a woman’s fantasy on how they’d love to be wooed by Patrick Dempsey. To an extent it succeeds – who doesn’t want Dempsey to pursue you on horseback? And there are laughs to make the ride enjoyable enough (though some of them are a trite forced). But it’s just so ordinary, so fluffy when it should be filling. You keep wishing for the sweeping emotions generated by The Notebook or the fun-loving hilarity of the earlier Dempsey hit, Enchanted.

In the end, it’s a so-so flick that does its job well enough. But I’m sure Dempsey will return in another charming guise, hoping to woo another celluloid beauty. Let’s hope the next one will be better than this.

Well, my review may seem a tad harsh (you've not seen harsh yet!), but the thing is, it doesn't matter. Because according to Box Office Mojo, Made of Honour earned a respectable $85mil worldwide. So, despite tepid reviews, the McDreamy magic is still chugging on.

hmm. my last show was "PS I Love You" and that was on Valentines' day. so it's been 3 months since i caught another movie. i was given the priviledge to choose what i want to watch today, because it's gonna be a treat from my buddy. quite a number of choices to choose from, we have narnia, sex and the city sneaks, chocolate, some ulu show call angel and indiana jones. ironman wasnt even showing anymore.

i'm really not very into magical stuffs, sneaks are more expensive, chocolate like quite lame, angel's cast like very horrible, and ha! indiana jones is a nono la. so i chose made of honour.

i like romantic comedies. it makes u laugh. it makes u tear. just like life.

prior to the show, we had our lunch at this placed called "Terra". i think they have another branch at Bugis if i nv remember wrongly. anyway, the food was so-so, not something that wows me, but also not something which u will curse and swear nv to go back again. we had their set meals, which consist of a main dish, soup and dessert. depending on your choice of main dish, the price ranges from $9.90 to $16.90.

it wasnt a very long movie. approximately 100mins. somehow, i feel that the advertisments were longer. ha! ok. that's an exaggeration. but seriously, their advertisments were way too long. it was a relief when the show started. it's quite a predictably nice show. hmm, i wld rate it at around 7.5/10. PS I Love You is at 9/10.

somehow, i like the way the people in the show behaves. u nv find that in Asia. u nv find people kissing on the streets. u nv find people hugging each other in public. i don't how to say but it just makes u feel closer to the people around u.

i think i'm too serious la. that's why.

so after the show, we went for coffee at Pacific. sat there and talked for like an hour plus before heading home. it was a really nice day. good show, good food, good coffee, good weather and of course, the best company. =)

and oh dear oh dear, i was just talking abt my stuffs throughout the coffee session and didnt asked about u! how selfish can i get. if u think u still need to fa xie, u know what to do.

Like Amelie Poulain, I like to notice things. Being a writer and editor, I noticed the title of a new movie about a bride-made man-maid of honour, Made of Honour. The title is a simple play on words but the aspect that got my attention was that the movie is American: that is, made in the US, with US actors, a US situational comedy script and, one presumes, US spelling.

I have a zephyrical amour with US spelling. Being a several-generations Australian, I inherited my linguistic hoonackeries from the British system. Thus I natively spell "colour" with "our" rather than the American "or". The variation doesn't affect the pronunciation - but please, my dear, even my darling, States-isticians, please pronounce the word "aluminium" as it is spelled (al-u-MIN-i-um), not "al-OOM-in-um"... Er, where was I? Oh yes, the British variation is thanks to the influence of the French. Anyway, the point is that the US spelling of honour is "honor".

So why is the title of the aforementioned movie "Made of Honour"? I don't think it is because that's the title of the role and so you have to keep the same spelling. It isn't a title that has international ramifications if you don't spell it correctly, and the position is also known as "chief bridesmaid". I doubt anyone would balk at the presence or absence of "u".

So we return to the question - "United States, have you compromised your honor?" Or is it only that your film editors are abysmal at spelling? If so, how does Mr Spelling, an entertainment industry giant, feel about editors?

courtesy of post secrets

this secret touched my heart so much cos' deep down inside, i do think part of me feels the same way too. today was supposed to be a happy day cos' i was out on a date. a cheesy lovey dovey movie - made of honour (ooh yummy patrick dempsey!) is supposed to complete my night. but it didn't turn out so good after all.

i'm not sure what is with us. i really don't. at least not anymore. i used to think i want us to work it out very badly. but i am really lost and i'm not quite sure if we would ever be happy together. on days where i am good, he would be upset with me. and on days where he is good, i would be upset with him. i really don't know how long more we can do this. this makes me really sad.

i don't want to go down this road, trying to kill each other. as much as i love him in that very special way, i respect and love him as a person, for who he is, not who he might be. i don't want to come to a point where i have to detest him. i want to tell him to pick me, choose me and love me ala grey's anatomy but i don't have the courage anymore.

i feel horrid. i think i am gonna cry myself to sleep and pray for us. i hate having to feel like this. i have been happy with my personal life and i want to continue feeling happy and carefree. i just wish we could share the same happiness. i wish we were happy, like how we used to be. and i wish he could talk to me about a future with me.

the future which we have never talk about.

i wish you knew all these all killing me softly too.

It's such a hot hot hot day nowadays. Heard that it actually rained, and was quite cold during the period of time when I was in Taiwan. Now that I'm back, it's hot hot hot everyday. I think I'm suay. That's why. *pout*

Caught 2 movies recently: Accuracy of Death (死神の精度) and Made of Honour.

Accuracy of Death (死神の精度)

Actually, I wonder why it's re-named as Accuracy of Death when it's actual English title is Sweet Rain. Accuracy of Death is just a direct translation of the Japanese title. Hmmm...

For this movie, 金城武 is the 死神. But expect nothing like Bleach. Haha! Don't expect him to be dress like those in Bleach, and running around with his zanpakuto slashing hollows. :D He's one who decide whether one should live or die. Pretty interesting. Love the doggie. So cute~ Pretty good movie I would say, though I was pretty shock when the movie ended. However, after pondering about the movie after that, it made sense. Haha~ Oh! Love the OST too!

Made of Honour

Went to watch this movie today. A light-hearted comedy. Heh~ Great humour as well. Heh~ Probably is a girly kind of movie. Not for a group of guys to watch together. LOL~ Great OST too. :D

Alrighty~ That's all for my movie updates.

I started the day at 6.15am getting a call to get up and arrived at SGH at about 7.30am. Our next location was at Commonwealth so we took the train over. It was close to 12 by the time we reached Vivocity so lunch came first before the show - Made of Honour.

Happily tired. I shall stop here for this short entry as I'm in need of sleep seriously. Another one tomorrow perhaps.

A nice variety of films start at the Mallard today. The big release of the week has to be Iron Man

A nice variety of films start at the Mallard today. The big release of the week has to be Iron Man which would just seem like the latest in a long line of slightly disappointing Marvel films (Blade being the one that the others have failed to live up to) were it not for the fact that it stars the superb Robert Downey Jr., is directed by Jon Favreau (Zathura) and written by John August (Go, Big Fish). In short the pedigree is great and I would be surprised if it was a bad film.

Made of Honour, on the other hand, looks pretty atrocious. It's about a bloke who is great friends with a woman and is asked to be her maid of honour when she gets married but he loves her yadda yadda yadda. One wonders how they think of all these great ideas.

Nim's Island is strictly for kids. It tells the story of a little girl who lives on Swiss Family Robinson style island with her father. When he goes missing she contacts the only person she knows who can help her, adventurer Alex Rover. Unfortunately, Alex is a fictional character created by agoraphobic author Alexandria Rover (Jodie Foster) who, despite her fear decides to do what she has only ever written about, albeit with the help of a mental manifestation of her creation. This looks like great stuff for kids. It's brightly coloured, and fun and there is even a hint of danger and a dash of Freud for those accompanying them.

Also showing are Fool's Gold, Horton Hears A Who!, The Eye and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (it seems that Three and Out is over and out after just one week).

Full screening info can be found on the 'Mallard Cinema' page.

I don't watch Grey's Anatomy but that doesn't mean I've missed all the hype around "Dr McDreamy" also known as Patrick Dempsey.

Sandrine Plasseraud spotted this great campaign advertised on Facebook. Go to the site, upload a photo of yourself and voila - it's yourself stood next to Dempsey. As Sandrine says, it's less fun when you select the "Share on Facebook" option and then see your mug is replaced with the official movie image again.

In the name of research I created a bit of McDarika for you
