Die-hard Sex and the City fans will laugh and possibly reminisce, others with mock me, but I just have to tell my sad tale.  This weekend my Mac crashed!  If you remember season four of Sex and the City when Carrie’s Mac crashed, it was like Déjà! Here I am sitting in Barnes & Noble, writing an article for Bright Hub, when the little color wheel appeared and started turning - very slowly mind you- and turning and turning and turning.   So, me being the computer hardware genius that I am, ok not really, I hit the power button in hopes of rebooting and continuing on with my article.  But, oh no not My Mac, My Mac sat there stuck on the start-up screen with the glowing Apple logo and yet another turning wheel - this time it was gray. That wheel would not stop turning, even when I rebooted yet again.

Luckily for me I live in the St. John’s Town center, which is an outdoor mall in Jacksonville, FL.  The town center is one of those new upscale communities that touts the benefits of, “Live, Work, and Play” all in one location.  In the town center there is an Apple store!  So, I walked around the corner, made my appointment - and like Carrie waited for my name to be called, as I clutched my defunct, color-wheel turning Mac for dear life.

Finally my name is called and the tech “genius” hooks my Mac up to a super-duper Mac and starts to

diagnose.  He is analyzing the hard drive and operating system.  He starts to explain that the analysis appears to state that my operating system has gone bad - ok whatever- can you fix it?  Well, it is very much fixable, but it will erase everything that I have saved on my hard drive! Then he asks the questions, “Did I backup my hard drive?”  AND then it hits me, I’m Carrie Bradshaw, which at this point is not good, because Carrie didn’t backup!  Dang, how embarrassing to admit that, no, I did not have an external hard drive, and no, I did not have a backup routine.  How embarrassing.  I know better, much, much better.  I’m a professor, PhD student and editor and writer.  My motherboard is Myself!  If I loose everything on my Mac, I will literally lose myself.

So, $850, and three days later I have my Mac back.  Sound like a lot, but it’s the price I had to pay for being Carrie!  The $850 went like this: $99.95 for a data rescue software that I had to use to save my data, $100 for an external hard drive, and $650 for a MacMini, I figured better safe than sorry.  I haven’t had a desktop is years, but hey, after the past three days a desktop is my plan b.  Luckily for me, my Mac is still under a one-year warranty, so all of the repairs were covered.  They even replaced the wrist plate that was worn and discolored from overuse.

The moral of the story is watch Sex and the City! and backup your hard drive or you run the risk of watching the little color wheel turn, and turn, and turn!

I think I have a problem!

Visto che devi cambiare computer, perchè non valuti anche l'idea di prendere un bel Mac?

Probabilmente l'idea doveva nascere e morire in pochi secondi ma dentro di me è scattata una molla non indifferente. Il mondo Mac mi è del tutto oscuro perchè ignorarlo?

Così sono andato sul sito della Apple ed ho cominciato a vedere i varii modelli. Molto belli davvero i portatili ma un altro portatile non lo voglio. L'idea era quella di prendere un fisso e su questa linea vorrei rimanere. Vedendo i fissi del Mac e conoscendo la mia situazione di caos assoluto in camera mia ho subito preso in considerazione il bellissimo iMac. Anche il Mac Mini non mi dispiace per il suo ingombro pari a zero ma il problema dei cavi è critico in camera mia. Sapete, il concetto di ordine nella mia stanza è stato bandito parecchio tempo fà ed io riesco a trovarmi bene nel mio mondo di caos organizzato.

Prima di prender un Mac però voglio informarmi bene e così ieri ho chiesto un parere a Lupo Di Mare ed ho curiosato in altri blog. I pareri sul mondo Mac che ho letto sono molto interessanti e piacevoli così ho deciso di spingermi un pochetto oltre e cercare di capire dove poterli vedere con mano vicino a casa. Cerca nei varii Apple Store in Italia ed ho trovato un "Premium Reseller" ad un 30Km da casa mia. Penso che il primo sabato che ho la mattina libera o una mezza giornata durante la settimana andrò a fare un giro molto volentieri.

Ho anche letto un pò di documentazione in giro dal punto di vista pratico e utente finale. Ho visto che Linux gira bene sul Mac. Non ho capito se come macchina virtuale oppure come sistema operativo reale. Qualcuno sà darmi indicazioni in merito?

Guardando il sito del "Premium Reseller" vicino a casa mia ho trovato una pagina molto ma molto interessante dal titolo "Perchè ti innamorerai di un Mac" ed al suo interno due filmati:

E sinceramente i video mi sono piaciuti davvero. Ora non sò, devo solo farci una bella pensata e riflessione e poi vedere. Magari il tutto resterà una bellissima pensata e non succede nulla. Pensiamo però come potrebbe cambiare la mia vita se davvero lo prendessi? Da quanto ho letto in rete e nei varii blog è un bellissimo viaggio a sola andata e questo mi piace come concetto. Lo sò, il difetto dei Mac è uno fondamentalmente ... costano ma chi li usa dice che vale davvero la pena.

Se gli "esperti mac" che passeranno di qua a leggere il post mi vogliono convincere per un portatile ben venga il tentativo ... è che due portatili mi sembrano sprecati visto che questo è stato sempre qua sulla scrivania e non si è mai mosso più di tanto.

I casi sono due secondo me. La "tentazione mac" è presente in me quindi ora:

• O mi si chiude il tunnel prima che ci entri
• O entro nel tunnel e non esco proprio più

Mi avevano detto la stessa cosa di Linux e ad essere sincero sono stato molto felice di conoscere quel mondo allora sconosciuto. Forse è la curiosità e l'ignoto che spingono noi informatici a queste ricerche mstiche nella vita ... siamo fatti così ... non ci si cambia molto facilmente credo ... è questione di DNA :P

Una motivazione sulla frase sarebbe gradita in quanto mi vorrei fare una valutazione corretta sulle esperienze altrui. Detto questo posso tornare a rilassarmi e vedermi qualcosa in televisione così continuo a rilassarmi il collo stando sdraiato]

Aunque muchos no os lo creáis, pocas veces me sale la vena de fanboy de Apple. No me gusta la pasión desmedida de muchos maqueros hacia todo lo que hace la compañía del siempre halabado (y pocas criticado) Steve Jobs. Por contra, reconozco que yo también he tenido mis épocas de seguidor ciego del padre Jobs, aunque cada vez menos. Supongo que al principio de entrar en en este mundo con los polos hundidos y un mordisco alojado en el este, es algo normal sentir pasión por todos los apartitos que nos venden a precio de oro (no son los únicos), los buenos señores de Cupertino. Lo tienen todo para atraer al público: diseño, elegancia, cuidado en los detalles, buen hardware, genial software..., y de hecho consiguen una clientela tremendamente fiel. Sin embargo, hay que achacarles que su visión del mercado, elitista y exclusivo en ocasiones, deja fuera a un gran número de personas, que son las que, por otro lado, tanto critican a Apple, pero al fin y al cabo los negocios son los negocios, y Steve Jobs, como tantos otros, está ahí para hacerse rico con ellos.

En cualquier caso, Apple tiene toque, porque no lo puedo definir con mejores palabras. Tiene ese toque que les cubrió de oro con el iPod, y que ahora les está llegando con el iPhone. Sin embargo, el punto primigenio y poderoso de Apple son sus Mac. Los preciosos MacBook, el archiconocido y delgado MacBook Air, la potencia del MacBook Pro, son un éxito y deberán serlo más con las bajadas de precio que sorprendentemente está imprimiendo Apple a sus productos. Más de lo mismo cuando pienso los iMac, que sorprenden por su diseño y capacidad a todo el que los ve funcionar, e incluso levanta admiración cuando están apagados... Los Mac Pro son pura potencia, aunque sí es cierto que el precio los hace solo visibles para un mercado pequeño. Y los mini...., los MacMini podrían ser la piedra filosofal de los Mac, pero Apple no quiere que lo sea. He llegado a la conclusión de que Steve Jobs no quiere que el MacMini sea tan popular y tan accesible para todos que masifique el mercado. No es esa la filosofía de Apple, su filosofía es la exclusividad, y el ser mayoría dentro de una minoría. Y así han pasado por encima de ataques virales y troyanos maliciosos que asedian constantemente a Windows, su eterno competidor.

Apple tiene toque, porque el revuelo que se formó con la presentación del primer iPhone solo es comparable a la que levantó con el iPhone 2.0, éxito en el mercado seguro. Steve Jobs y los suyos reinventan el mercado de los móviles y los smartphones, tal y como reinventaron los reproductores mp3 con el iPod. No podría deciros cuál es mi artículo favorito de Apple, porque hasta el Shuffle, que nunca me gustó, al tenerlo y jugar con él me apasiona, y ese es el toque de Apple, que de una manera u otra, para bien o para mal, apasiona.

La cosa es más o menos así: estoy aburrido, voy a rediseñar mi página, ahora voy a traducir un libro, ahora, no, mejor ahora hago un programita que me baje de Internet todas las letras de Death Metal a mi disco duro en un formato XM… ahora, mejor me compro estos siete libros para aprender “whatever 5.4″ y los pongo sobre la montaña que está junto al televisor, ahí junto a los 7 DVDs que no he visto. Un algo así como: ¡ponte a hacer una cosa nueva, no te preocupes por las otras trescientas también nuevas que te tienen estresado!”.. (Microsiervos)

Kurioso lleva tiempo pensando en ello, dándole vueltas mientras procrastina. Hoy he decidido, después de menear un poquito, visitar Fogonazos y ordenar la collección de pelusas de ombligo por colores,  poner en marcha el asunto, aunque con espasmos neuronales y las ideas escarchadas. Tengo claro que para procrastinar es necesario tener la obligación, motivación o acicate  del proyecto por el que se procrastina; por ello me tengo que comprometer en ofrecer un premio interesante y al mismo tiempo  un castigo pseudo-intimidador por incumplimiento de bases.

Lo primero es fácil, el reciclaje geek me permite disponer de algún aparato infrautilizados dispuesto a aterrizar en el mejor procrastinador hispano.  Entre ellos un Macmini (Core Duo 512mb 60gb) y una ‘Internet tablet’ nokia n-800. (Portes pagados Península y Baleares)

Para lo segundo, más complicado, propongo vuestro consentimiento para manipular despiadadamente y publicar en este blog el retrato personal que deberá ser enviado en el email de suscripción.

El concurso consistirá en diseñar, escribir, dibujar o manipular alguna gilipollez kuriosa e intrascendente (original, por supuesto, propuesta en los comentarios de este post y siempre bajo el tamiz del humor) después de un proceso de procrastinación personal que hay que detallar cuidadosamente. Se valorará el equilibrio y las conexiones entre el resultado final de la prueba y el proceso procristinativo que condujo a ella (mediante video, texto o imagen, pudiendo ir toda la obra junta o separada). El ingenio, la ocurrencia e ironía, el diseño y el lenguaje, etc… serán pautas de valoración y el tiempo, evidentemente, será un factor importante y limitado, valorando quien entregue más cerca del plazo final su propuesta. Para lanzar el concurso necesito un mínimo de 20 inscripciones (y participaciones). Cada participante dispondrá de un tiempo determinado (se le avisará por mail), sus plazos de entrega y su prueba personalizada. Conforme se reciban las propuestas se irán publicando (las mejores) en este post. Al final del plazo general se seleccionarán las dos ganadoras.

¿Te animas?.. Escribe una propuesta de tema o diseño y mándame un email, sin nombre ni datos personales (basta un nick), con una foto de cara (max 200k) y ‘Concurso Kurioso’ en el Subjet, con ello te  enviamos un código de participación…  kuriosoblog(arroba)gmail.com. El concursante que no entregue nada en el plazo previsto acepta que podamos desvariar con su foto y la publiquemos en escarnio público.  Para evitar  mandar fotos ajenas, el ganador y el finalista deberán demostrar para recibir el premio que la foto enviada es la suya.

En cuanto reunamos un mínimo de inscritos y anuncie el/los temas definitivos comenzaremos a mandar emails con los plazos.

P.D2 (Septiembre)   Era de suponer, tras tres meses desde que lancé la propuesta ni una sola idea ha sido enviada. Un concurso lanzado por un vago, para vagos y que consiste en vaguear, jamás podría tener éxito... en fin, otra vez será...

O USB phone, depois de instalar mil e um drivers, não tinha funcionado, e eu nem estava usando. Aí hoje atualizei o Skype para o 2.7.0.330 e funcionou, nem sei com qual dos drivers! Para a webcam, uso o Macam, e nem é a última versão (é a 0.8.7). Como funcionou, não quis atualizar.

O mais difícil foi usar webcam e telefone ao mesmo tempo, porque o meu MacMini tem só duas portas USB e uma estava ocupada com o mouse. Experimentei com um hub, deu erro, bandwidth insuficiente (imagino que ele estava falando da energia e não da internet). Voltei a usar o mouse sem fio - que eu tinha trocado por um mighty mouse porque o sem fio gasta horrores de pilha - e voilà. Agora estou com Mac, Skype, webcam, telefone USB... e fiquei feliz da vida.

I think for me it all started when I formated my jail broken iPod Touch, and bought the Apple Apps from iTunes, that day I went legit. Since that day I began starting buying more Mac apps, and Mac apps I use the most, also I started paying for web apps I use a lot, like Flickr.

For example a list of Mac apps a bought is Mailplane, I love Mailplane because I have like six Gmail accounts and the Firefox Gmail Manager was just not cutting it. AppZapper, I have no idea why Apple didn't think of this, this app is awesome, it does exactly what It says.I bought MarsEdit and Ecto, because of Leo Laporte of TWIT recommended this app on his MacBreak Weekly Podcast. This two apps are for blogging I got MarsEdit first, but I switch to Ecto once I got it because I feel it had more features. I also bought OnTheJob because of Scott Bourne recommended this app on the MacBreak Weekly Podcast also. This app is a time tracker and invoiceing, I plan to start my own Computer Consulting business and I feel this app did the job for a small business.

After that I bought more apps to feel more needs, I got 1Password to manage, my site passwords and apps licenses. I got Business Card Composer to created good looking business cards for my small business. ForkLift to manage files from my MacMini to my MacBook. I bought iShowU to make how to video tutorials for my business. I bought Snak because I love IRC, and I need to get my IRC fix from time to time. I bought Notebook and Disco, Notebook to talk notes at my classes, and Disco to burn data files mainly. I also got CheckUp, BlogAssist, Cha-Ching, and CuteClips, utilize that have a specific end and do there job right. CheckUp lets me know own my Mac is running, BlogAssist help me out with little most use HTML snippets, Cha-Ching for managing my Finances, and CuteClips to manage my clipboard, I use copy and past a lot, who doesn't ?

The last couple of apps I got where TextMate, Coda, Transmit and Sandvox, mainly becuase I want to get back on my web page creating days. I have lots to learn since back when I did my first web site I use HTML, now days more web sites are writing in PHP so I'm reading to get caught up. TextMate is just a basic Text Editor for writing with Ruby On Rails, Coda is a fully feature coding environment. I love it is full of content and a very user friendly user interface. Transmit is an FTP client, and Sandvox is a fully feature web creating and management app, I absolutely love, I can't wait to get my dreamhost account and domain, so I can put by web site up.

Complementando o último post do Träsel, começam a surgir vários modelos de aparelhos de TV que já vem com conexão built-in. Isso começou a me chamar a atenção na última CES com aparelhos da Panasonic e outras marcas com Widgets e várias formas de conexão. 

A Sharp está lançando uma linha de LCD (foto) com conector LAN e navegador para a Web. Ainda não sei se esta função tem que ser da TV ou de algum periférico. O Pase já mostrou como é bem feita a implantação do Opera no Wii. Eu uso o um Macmini ligado na tela e acho que seria uma solução perfeita se a Apple incorporasse o Safari no Front Row. Resumindo, ainda não tenho certeza se o caminho da Sharp e Panasonic é o certo.

Das Mac OS X ist sehr stabil, und es gibt keine Viren. Man kann unbeirrt und sorgenfrei surfen.

Dazu bietet die Intel CPU in dem MAC die Möglichkeit, ein Windows zu booten oder über Zusatzsoftware wie z.Bsp. Parallels oder VMWare, als virtuelle Maschine ausführen.

Ebenso eingebaut, ist WLan und der MacMini lässt sich problemlos mi einem Wireless Router betreiben. Auf komfort, wie CD Brenner oder einen TV Adapter muss man auch nicht verzichten. Zum empfehlen ist hier der EyeTV USB Adapter, vorzugsweise mit zwei Antennen. An Software findet man alles was zum Arbeiten und Vergnügen benötigt wird.

Firefox zum surfen, Thunderbird für E-Mail, Office für Mac mit Word und Excel, MuCommander als Dateimanager, CodeTek als Virtueller Desktop Manager, Yahoo Messenger für Mac OS, Palm Desktop

für Palm Verwaltung, DvD Remaster & Mac The Ripper für DvD's, VLC Player für Media, u.v.m. und natürlich die vielen Tools und Programme die schon mitgeliefert werden.

Bis lang hat sich mein Mac Mini noch nicht aufgehangen oder ohne Vorwarnung verabschiedet.

Ich habe einige Hinweise und Naserümpfen bezüglich "Windows starten" für den MAC bekommen.
Es sei hier nur der vollständigkeithalber erwähnt, das man mit Boot Camp auch ein Windows starten könnte. Wenn es wirklich sein muss und man Schritt für Schritt umsteigen möchte, ist sicherlich VMWare Fusion, Virual PC oder Parallels zu empfehlen.

Hay cosas que nunca entenderé de Apple. Y una de ellas es el ostracismo al que ha sometido a uno de sus productos que más proyección podría tener si se le prestara más atención, la Macmini. Y es que cuando un usuario de Windows, que no está contento con su rendimiento, o que simplemente quiere probar algo nuevo como el MacOsX, se encuentra en la tesitura de tener que escoger entre sobremesas de más de 1.000€ como son los actuales iMac, o portátiles desde 950€ como son los MacBook. De primeras son precios caros, y no porque las máquinas no los valgan, ya que si algo distingue a los Mac es su calidad y fiabilidad de hardware, además de un gran software, incluso diría sin miedo a equivocarme que la relación calidad-precio es inmejorable. Sin embargo para alguien nuevo en Mac puede ser un obstáculo insalvable. Antes de todas estas máquinas encontramos a la Macmini actual, con un precio a partir de 590€, aquí tenéis las especificaciones:

La Macmini podría solucionar la papeleta a todo el que sienta curiosidad por la Mac pero no dispone de tanto dinero para gastar, sin embargo vemos que para lo que ofrece, dado que no te incluyen la pantalla..., es muy cara. Si Apple viera la cantidad de mercado que podría capturar gracias a tener un sobremesa portable para usar como HomeCinema, por poner un ejemplo, o para quien quiere aprovechar una gran pantalla, tal vez superior en tamaño a las del iMac, bajaría el precio y os aseguro que se forraban. Por 300 ó 350€ la gente se lo compraba casi sin pensar. Sin embargo, martes tras martes actualizan los MacBooks, dentro de poco los iMac, aparece el MacBook Air..., pero la Macmini ahí queda, en el último cajón de Cupertino, y es una auténtica pena.

Over the years, Apple periodically comes under fire for not listening to its customers—specifically, for deciding on particular features (or a lack thereof) and then sticking by its guns regardless of the reaction. Although some of this criticism is off-base, some of it is spot-on.

But Monday’s release of the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update shows that sometimes Apple does listen, and occasionally even reverses design decisions because of user feedback. Consider some of the tweaks featured in this update to Leopard.

I'm so excited to say that once I got my MacMini, a couple of weeks later I got myself a Apple iPod Touch, if anyone has seen my Flickr account you may have seen some of my new Jailbreak Apple iPod Touch, this was my Christmas gift from me to me, also side the MacMini which I also bought. I also got for myself to add to my Ashley Tisdale collection the new "High School Musical 2" DVD, I already seen the freaking DVD about 5 times tops,  and I can stop. My aunt bought me the "Agile Web Developing on Rails" book , which I can wait to start reading and experimenting with it. Also my good friend Ed got me back into World Of Warcraft, he got me the video game for the Mac, which I haven't had the time to install yet.

Something tells me this year promises to be a very exciting one, one tons of challenges ahead, big future projects and big changes that are bound to happen in my life. I have my head focus on many project that I am very excited to start, and now that I finally got a new Mac I want to get back to my Video editing days, hoping to put a audio/video Podcast together with a couple of friends of mine.

I can't wait till I finally start my Masters degree in Finance and I hope to keep moving up the working ladder, I love my job at Evertec, save enough money to buy myself a domain and hosting, built my own website hopefully using the skill I learn using the Ruby book and many many other project that I'm totally focus on.
