Swedish singer Lykke Li. When I first began reading about her, I glazed over the attention, thinking she was just another female artist in the vein of Regina Spektor and Feist. But when I desperately needed new tunes for a long flight abroad, I decided to give her a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. Lykke Li isn't quite as sugary-sweet as the aforementioned queens of indie pop and she has more of a soulful edge. Some of the songs on her debut Youth Novel—produced by Bjorn Yttling of ubiquitous pop outfit Peter, Bjorn and John—even incorporate electronic elements, which is always gravy to me.

And, she's hot.

Check out the video for "Little Bit." Very catchy. She'd probably make out with me, right?

everyone loves to compare santogold to mia. i do not. both, however, happen to rock.

from Santogold's mixtape with Diplo (yeah philly love!), Top Ranking, here's santi's Get It Up (Radioclit Mix feat. M.I.A. and Gorilla Zoe).
im hoping they collaborate more, and with the whole philly / diplo / spank rock connection, maybe ill get my wish...

lykke li - little bit

discovered lykke back in april, and have been obsessed ever since. understated, playful, and absolutely brilliant. love those swedes.

yeasayer - 2080

when i was looking for an apt here back in march, this one girl who's place i looked at in the marina. very sweet girl, kenyon alum, totally marina. she was funny, though - she had just moved out of a loft in soma where she was living with her hipster friends, and she was like, i go to the yeasayers! im indie! and of course i had no idea who the yeasayers were at this point. but to the point: this song is fantastic. layered, textured, syth-laden... just gorgeous.

Jaja.. *Ding!* =P Men ändå.

[caption id="attachment_193" align="alignnone" width="272" caption="null"][/caption]

LS - O primeiro foi Rat Is Dead, agora é Left Behind, depois vem Move. Lançamos Left Behind ontem [terça-feira 15] no YouTube. Nenhum jornalista do Brasil perguntou disso.

É frio, as pessoas ficam depressivas.

Adriano Cintra - Minha família e meus amigos.

AC - Ah, muito Tilly and the Wall, Lykke Li, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head, Ssion, Metronomy. O disco novo do Metronomy é genial.

Ninguém ouve All That She Wants do Ace Of Base e percebe que é uma música sobe aborto. A gente é meio assim.

Ganhamos MUITA experiencia no melhor sentido dessa palavra.

Temos o melhor trabalho do mundo.

Dictatorial use of dynamic drum stick...

Lykke Li is here to dance... Optimistically she also expects (and attempts to demand) that the crowd accompanies her in rhythmic motion. In spite of a relatively inert audience and in spite of commencing at 20:15 when the venue is half full, Lykke is on a quest to instil pleasurable vitality to the masses. Irrelevant of reaction she is irrepressibly animated. With flowing locks and jerkily dynamic dancing she often resembles a ferociously flowing bedspread on a washing line.

Appropriately the set commences with “Dance Dance Dance.” It is as much a statement of intent as a mere opening song. Dynamic quirkyness is the main flavour of tonights offering. Accompanying the unrelenting sparkyness is a homespun use of instruments. One minute she is playing the kazoo, next she is wielding a drumstick as her weapon of choice. The drumstick is waved and wafted more like a rapier than an aid to instrumentation.

All of the songs gain an urgency and vivacity when performed live. “Little bit” can sound soporifically sedate but as a live experience it both “wakes up” and gains extra instrumental barbs. “I’m good, I’m gone” also erupts like a minor solar flare. She tries coaxing, she tries demanding, yet in spite of her plaintive pleas (We’re here to dance… this is a rock gig) minimal audience reaction is extracted. The final megaphone romp which is “Breaking it up” is a ridiculously infectious edgy stomp. Shriekingly tuneful choir vocals overlap with megaphone yelping to insistent beats in a delightfully chaotic fashion. The effect is both ridiculous and utterly riotous….And then just as we are basking in such wonderment… it is all over. Such musical fecundity, adventurous and dynamism deserves far more…

Vision: (9/10): Melodramatic dance fusion of both audacity and pop subtlety. Perhaps a “little bit” kookily contrived but always fascinating

Ability to execute (8/10): A real passion and drive are displayed. Flailing dance manoeuvres sometimes hint at energy over subtlety but the overall efficacy is never in doubt

Crowd symbiosis (4/10): Pockets of enthusiasm but no more. Reasonable reaction for a support band but never truly brimming with excitement.

Would see again (9/10): Most, most, most definitely

So, this blog. I haven’t decided yet what exactly I’m doing here, whether I’m going to even tell anyone about it, or…what. I’m a firm believer that to be any good- readable, even- a blog needs a point. A raison d’etre. Otherwise it just gets all “OMG can you believe how clever I am!? I’M SPECIAL LOOK AT ME!” (See: Nonsociety, most momblogs.) But…I haven’t yet decided what my particular point is, other than I really really like to write, and talk about myself, and tell people all the funny things that have happened to me lately. So you could say I’m still searching for that hook on which to hang the hat of my narcissism.

Anyway, this post is just to say if you’ve stumbled along here by accident, which happens, there’s nothing really to see yet but there will be soon, probably.

And now, to keep this post from being completely boring and pointless:

2008 has been a great year for music thus far, with a nice mix of new releases from old favourites and emerging artists. Here is a by-no-means comprehensive list of Colour favourites.

Beach House - Devotion

Utterly sublime sophomore record from Portland two-piece, Beach House. At once mournful and bright, this album sounds so unique even with such an economy of means. Victoria Legrand's croon haunts in the true sense of the word, you can't get it out of your mind. James

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Much has been made of the background story to Justin Vernon's debut - man severs ties with his girlfriend and band and spends four months living in a log cabin in Wisconsin. However, the emotion behind the haunting, ethereal folk of For Emma, Forever Ago seems to run much deeper. An essential headphones listen to fully appreciate its creepy background atmospherics. Matt

Bonnie ‘Prince' Billy - Lay Down in the Light

Gone are the sweeping strings of 2006s The Letting Go, on a record of pretty straightforward country that sees the ever-consistent Will Oldham sounding positively cheerful as he (mostly) extols the joys of love, friendship and family. M

The Chap - Mega Breakfast

'Fun and Interesting' is the title of the standout track on The Chap's second album and it pretty much does what it says on the tin. Flirtations in electronic experimental indie, three times as witty as the last Hot Chip album thought it was, and a much better listen. J

Destroyer - Trouble in Dreams

Dan Bejar's ticks and quirks are all firmly in place for this, another fantastic set of anthemic and complex indie arrangements. Excellent. J

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes / Sun Giant EP

Rustic spiritualism for those sun-blissed summer evenings, laden with stunning harmonies and some great ‘70s inspired folk. They far surpass the ‘early My Morning Jacket' comparisons leveled at them. M

Read Katie's Fleet Foxes post here.

Lykke Li - Youth Novels

Aside from surely being a staple in the stable of slightly weird indie crushes, Lykke Li's album is old news in her native Sweden, (thankfully finally being released here this year) and is a fantastic and inventive record of fully realised pop. J

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash

His finest solo effort to date, Real Emotional Trash is a set of elasticised jams that frequently slacken before being pulled back together by the tight rhythm section of drummer Janet Weiss and bassist Joanna Bolme. ‘Gardenia' provides the mandatory three minute pop wonder. M

Neon Neon - Stainless Style

This collaboration between the Super Furry's Gruff Rhys and Boom Bip based on the life of mad inventor John Delorean, is a shamelessly revisionist paean to Eighties excess. It's also the most fun record of 2008 so far. M

No Age - Nouns

This record kicks arse so hard, it commits buggery. The No Age twosome refine the blueprint set out on last years Weirdo Rippers collection, of psychedelic distorted soundscapes breaking into smashing, rousing punk. (This also features the finest album artwork I've seen for a while.) J

Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea

David Berman is still a master of catchy, countrified indie and his turn of phrase is as sharp as ever on the Jews' seventh release. After weathering depression and addiction, he revisits his weaknesses with gravity and wit. M

Read Matt's Silver Jews post here.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Pershing

This band make music that's like crack for seasoned indie pop fans, filled as it is with ultra-catchy melodies, harmonies and cowbells. Who needs Weezer? M

Son Lux - At War with Walls and Mazes

An Anticon release that pushes my buttons in every department. New York native Ryan Lott's album is all fine piano driven verses helmed by sparkling beats and production ideas, with handsome, complimentary arrangements. J

Subtle - Exiting Arm

The Oakland six-piece fuse the organic with the technological to create something truly otherworldly, foreboding and nightmarish - in a strangely melodic way. M

Read Matt's Subtle post here.

Why? - Alopecia

A darker take on the upbeat indie hip-hop of 2005's Elephant Eyelash, Alopecia features lyrics exploring the embarrassment of youth and the betrayal of relationships, often matched by gloomy, foreboding keyboards and harsh percussion. M

Read Matt's Why? post here.

Also Recommended:

Peter Broderick - Docile Thirty minutes of exquisite solo piano pieces from this young serial collaborator. After listening to this very lovely album, be sure to check the fuller, orchestral record 'Float' and the recent Library Tapes EP on which Broderick features. Super. J

The National - The Virginia EP Odds-and-ends compilation from one of the most consistently amazing rock bands around right now. M

Growing - Lateral A sea of gorgeously arranged guitar distortion loops that should in no way sound as good as this actually does. J

Hayden - In Field & Town Weary wilderness folk from the Canadian singer-songwriter. M

High Places - 03/07-09/07 The kind of plodding ghostly noisescapes favoured by bands like Black Dice or Gang Gang Dance are given shape and warmth by vocalist Mary Pearson's pretty The Blow-esque melodies. J

Malcolm Middleton - Sleight of Heart Great mini-album follow-up to A Brigher Beat from the ex-Arab Strap miserablist. M

Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual Amazingly good, lengthy ADD noise rock workouts from Brooklyn five piece. J

She & Him - Volume One Slick country-pop ballads from M. Ward and Zooey Dechanel. M

Sun Kil Moon - April Spooky, atmospheric but occasionally dull Americana from Mark Kozelek. M

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer It's Wolf Parade. It's flipping awesome. J

There is still loads of great stuff to come this year, most of which we probably haven't even heard of yet (Check out Pitchfork's guide to what's to come this Summer for starters). There are also a good few records from January to June that we've been meaning to check out but haven't got round to yet.

Part 2: The Muxtape

Ernie Halter is a soul-infused pop singer/songwriter, a guy who's been influenced as much by the Lennon/McCartney as he has by Otis Redding. “The new record is called ‘Starting Over’ for a reason,” says Halter. “I wanted the title to be direct, simple, and set the tone for the album. In this past year, I experienced the unraveling of my marriage and the birth of my first son. It was during this year that I wrote the material for the new record and performed over 150 shows.”

Economics, technology, ice hockey, tennis, personal grooming: the Swedish list of triumphs is long and extensive. With the new breed of indie pop artists emerging from the kingdom, the rest of the world has yet something else to be jealous about. Here are three brilliant exemplars:

The sounds, The shout out louds and lykke Li
When Lykke Li sings her voice is so delicate, so ethereal that she sounds as though she’s transmitting from a submarine stranded on the seafloor. What’s more, Li brilliantly plays to this amazing strength, matching it to productions so lean and carefully stripped back that they drive you straight to the heart of her bristling songcraft.

So, so, so. Sunny, sunny June. A long, hazy, pleasant month with lots of good memories. And lots

So, so, so. Sunny, sunny June. A long, hazy, pleasant month with lots of good memories. And lots of singles to catch up on. Here's the pick of them, including Single of the Week cuts from Mystery Jets (again), Frankmusik, The School, Weezer and Ladyhawke (again). Enjoy...

2nd June 2008

Single of the Week: Mystery Jets – Two Doors Down

Despite recent confirmation that they're still a bit crap live, this is my second single of the week for Mystery Jets this year. While it lacks the subtle charms of 'Young Love', it's clearly a fabtastic pop stomper that throws everything into the mix (including potentially lethal sax solos) and comes out with something that sounds pretty much like Summer 2008 in a box. Sorry Lykke...

Click below for all the rest!

Other good stuff...

Lykke Li – I’m Good I’m Gone
My album of the year so far is Lykke's Youth Novels. This is another great track from it. Lacks the surprise factor of previous SOTW 'Little Bit', but otherwise flawless.

Sebastien Tellier – Divine
Didn't win Eurovision; still awesome.

The Clik Clik – Did You Wrong
File next to the Ting Tings, Alphabeat, etc. Is this the sound of 2008? It'll do.

Jeremy Warmsley - The Boat Song
Folkypoppygeekystrummything. I like.

Joan As Police Woman – To Be Loved
Slick, classy, but ulltimately a little bit too coffee-table.

Nightwish – The Islander
Why do I have a bit of a soft-spot for these preposterous Scandinavian rockers? Silly overblown prog this time, but difficult to hate.

REM – Hollow Man
Another decent enough track from their 'return to form' (tm everyone) album.

* * *

9th June 2008

Single of the Week: Frankmusik - In Step
The horribly named Frankmusik is Vincent Frank, a 21-year-old former beatboxer from Croydon. This is Discovery-era Daft Punk with slightly over-enthusiastic vocals. It's lots of fun. And don't we all want a flashing hula hoop?

Sonny J – Handsfree (If You Hold My Hand)
More sampleadelic fun from the Liverpool man who brought us previous SOTW 'Enfant Terrible.' If anything, this is better, but it's been released in a stronger week...

The Cure – Freakshow
Livelier than of late, and shower their many imitators how it's done.

The Duke Spirit - My Sunken Treasure
Not as good as The Step and the Walk, but also very good.

Kid Carpet - I Dont Want To Fall In Love With You (7”)
A strange, skewed pop genius from a slightly different planet. Or Bristol. Brilliant, as ever.

Laura Marling – Cross Your Fingers / Crawled Out Of The Sea
More of the same, but none the worse for it.

We Are Scientists – Chick Lit
Radio-friendly, solid stuff.

* * *

16th June 2008

Single of the Week: The School - Let It Slip
Time to return to one of my guilty pleasures again... This is indie-pop loveliness in the Camera Obscura mould, from a Cardiff-based band featuring a former member of The Loves. OK, so maybe the intro rips off British Sea Power's 'Be Gone', but that's more than compensated for by the wonderful silky vocals and 60s-girl-pop breakdown.

And...

Infadels - Free Things For Poor People
Formerly chugalong electro-rock, Infadels seemed to have slapped a lick of Guilty Pleasures-style gloss all over their new material. It's an improvement.

Jamie Lidell – Another Day
There's something charming about Mr. Lidell that makes you forget he's essentially making glossy facsimiles of classic soul, with little new added to the mix. But he'll still never match 'Multiply.'

Jay Reatard - Always Wanting More
Excitable, ADD-afflicted guitar-pop. Good stuff.

The Kills - Last Day of Magic
The first time a Kills record has explicitly reminded me of Jamie's old band Scarfo. This is a good thing.

Presets - This Boy's In Love
Depeche Mode-esque dark electro from Modular band. Pretty good.

White Williams – Violator (7”)
Hypnotic, repetitive guitar/bleeps thing from young Ohio guy on Domino.

* * *

23rd June 2008

Single of the Week: Weezer - Pork And Beans
Probably a slightly out of character choice here. But it's single of the week because it makes me smile in a geeky sorta way. OK, so it's hardly a genuine return to form. But it's roughly a billion times better than anything on the thoroughly rubbish 'Make Believe' album. And they're back to doing what they do (sort of second) best - making brilliant, memorable videos.

It's a slow week...

MGMT - Electric Feel
Not as good as 'Time To Pretend', but sounds fantastic on the radio

Black Kids – Hurricane Jane
While this is competent enough, it does make one wonder if they peaked with their debut, and it's all downhill from here... I could be wrong, though.

The Charlatans – The Misbegotten
More decent stuff from their New Order-indebted latest record.

Five O Clock Heroes feat Agyness Deyn – Who
WRONG on paper. On record, actually not bad.

Glasvegas – Geraldine
Sort-of-OK stuff from band that are clearly aiming to fill a stadium sometime before the end of the month. It's a bit too much, too soon, for my liking.

Heloise & The Savoir Faire - Illusions (Hot Tonight!) [MySpace]
Seems like the sort of thing I should like. But somehow a bit too... forced?

* * *

30th June 2008

Single of the Week: Ladyhawke - Paris Is Burning
Second Single of the Week in a row (following the briliant 'Back of the Van') from the New Zealand popster with a bag full of classic influences coming together to make something very danceable but also rather beautiful. On live evidence, there's a possibility that Ms. Hawke may well be a bit of a two-hit wonder. And while I'm hoping I'm wrong there, it doesn't take anything away from the shiny brilliance of 'Paris is Burning.'

Other singles available...

Goldfrapp – Caravan Girl
Summery pop loveliness and third excellent single in a row from Alison & co.

Estelle – No Substitute Love
No 'American Boy', but still moderately enjoyable.

Freemasons – When You Touch Me
Actually quite fun OTT dance-pop.

The Long Blondes – Guilt
The relative rubbishness of the second Long Blondes album still makes me a bit sad. This average track, which doesn't really go anywhere, is probably one of the best things on it. Which really isn't saying much. They are better than this...

Paul Heaton - Mermaids & Slaves
Breezier, and more Housemartins-esque, than any recent Beautiful South outings. Quite cheering, in a resolutely uncool sort of way.

Rosie Oddie and the Odd Squad - Cola Coka
Certainly a bit odd. The slow intro gives way to an all-over-the-place knees-up. Can't really make up my mind here: great or awful? One of them.

Tricky – Council Estate
Sound little like anything he's done before, but it's pretty catchy and he handles the solo-vocals pretty well.

Wild Beasts – The Devil’s Crayon
New Kendal indie-rockers. Intriguing stuff.
Phew, nearly there...!

There are a million and one more nice things said about lykke li with each passing day.

One day we are gonna exhaust all the adjectives we can use to describe just how much of a character lykke li is.

I am still going to let you in on how much she deserves to be great. not just good, but awesome great.

I believe (and so does lykke li), that the term indie is a useless term and that there is no indie music, only good, quality music which makes people stand up and listen.

As much as it would be easy to classify her with the wonderful swedish music crowd, lets treat her like she belongs to another world.

Her debut album youth novels is one to marvel at.

In this album she will literally serenade, coo, whisper, sing, mix it up with foot stomps, loudhailers and most definitely cast a spell on you with the fragility and edginess to her. Various personalities come through all the time, with different layers peeling off with each song, reminding you of her diversity.

It is a journey with lykke li, a whole bag of emotions involved.

Poised, articulate, flirtatious, precocious, inimitable, unpretentious, genius.

Dont be daunted by these descriptions, it still comes through with simplicity in the end and we will all be left wanting so much more.

mp3|lykke li - little bit / (zshare)

mp3|lykke li - I'm good, I'm gone / (zshare)

I don't normally post 2 videos at once. but you really have to see them both.

one is a wonderful live performance of her with members of the concretes, shout out louds and robyn.

the other is directed by another genius. mattias montero.

Recently listened to the albums from two different female artists hailing from the Nordic reaches that are memorable in different ways...

Lykke Li - Youth Novel (Sweden)

There is certainly something here and she does have a good voice- good enough to lure me in but there is something about the album that just doesn't sit right with me. Quite a few of her songs have some catchy rhythms- Dance, Dance, Dance, I'm Good, I'm Gone and Little Bit are good with the standout track being Hanging High. However there are quite a few tracks that I simply do not like with her cockney-fied pronunciations and with the overproduction I was left wondering if there was actually a band involved or just a machine.

Overall it was a good album but I don't think it helps when you see the videos and there is just a tad too much brassiness there. I think she would be far better if that was toned down to just sassy. That said- I have only heard good reviews about her gig in the Sugar Club so maybe she comes across differently live.

Ane Brun - Changing of the Seasons (Norwegian)

My God- what a voice! She makes you sit up and take notice from the very first moment she opens her mouth! Some tracks are quite stripped down and to have her voice float out of nowhere is really an enthralling experience. There are quite a few different styles of songs on here but the main thing is that there is not one filler- definitely more than a couple standouts for me since The Treehouse Song, The Fall, The Puzzle, Changing of the Seasons and Raise My head are my favourites that I return to again and again.

This is just one album you have to listen to and savour to the end. While I am not regretting seeing Yeasayer the night she was in town- I really wish there hadnt been a conflict now and I hope that she returns here soon.

Just a couple of YouTubes- not many out there for Ane Brun and probably the best one for Lykke Li.
