Stay tuned ;-)

Colour profiles is one area where I always felt Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw could be improved a lot. Rawshooter Premium had the brilliant ColorEngine plug-in with colour profiles from colour wizard Magne Nilsen. I was never able to quite repeat these colours in Lightroom or ACR.

Until now. Fortunately Adobe Labs have come to the rescue with their much improved color rendering package. Have a look at this comparison of my Hawk Dreaming landscape, the top photo is the new Adobe Standard beta profile, the bottom photo is the standard Lightroom ACR4.4 profile.

The rendering of red and orange hues is much improved in the new profiles so if you’re a Lightroom 2.0 or Camera Raw (you need to get at least version 4.5) user waste no time, download the profiles and follow the instructions from the Adobe Labs page and enjoy much improved colours! I recommend using the "’Adobe Standard beta’ profile in the package but try them all and see what you like best.

It's very cold out side, but it is a full moon and I wanted to get these shot's with a grassy underground. Before going out my friend MrjohnnyC suggested a trick with flash but I ended up not needing to use it. The lights I had were more than enough.

The exit sign and the conference room sign are from the Pontiac asylum I was in last friday. Chris got ahold of me about an abandoned something I'd have to talk to Articia about it.

I need more dolls, about the same size to use as props, or even better models. As well I need to gather together more props.

The self portrait again lack of better model, but then again really it makes a pretty good sp since I painted that on my wall. So that works then.

Hope all of you enjoy. Let me know.

Yesterday I hung out with my friend Erick and his friend whom I met for the first time Shawn, or is it Sean, I didn't ask on the spelling, should have. We walked around Fenton which seemed like a good idea, to get pictures. Fun times, and then there are a few snap shots after at Ericks, where some other people came over once Ericks wife Jessica came home, which I tried to get pictures of everyone but yea. Anyway I hope you enjoy what I snapped along the way yesterday.

The handsome fella in the white button down with the drink in the last two photo's is my dear friend Eric Clark.

This is the second set of pictures taken in the high hours of afternoon that I've used my saved presets on that I made perhaps the next set taken at these hours or even maybe these same ones at a later date I will rework. Maybe. Just throwing it out there, let me know what you think.

The Five Rules
In Adobe’s Lightroom, the

What in the world does this mean in Adobe Lightroom!?

The Five Rules

In Adobe's Lightroom, there is a work environment that help make working on photos much easier. Sometimes, and all too often, do the toolbars or panels get in the way of working on photos. Well, adobe put together The Five Rules to help you understand the the environment better. I won't go into those here because they've done a great job on their own. I will tell you though how to get to the tutorial in Lightroom, and then I'll explain some Key Commands that they don't cover. In Lightroom, you can access the tutorial from the Help menu and then select The Five Rules.

The main items in the environment are:

The Module Picker - which is where you control what work flow module you are in.

The Panels - which are the organizational, informational, and tool work areas.

The Filmstrip - which is the photo filmstrip view offering filtering and designating working sets.

All these are very valuable tools, but sometimes they get in the way. You need more space. Here is what I've done to enjoy working in my environment better. Way to go Adobe, you've made it a great user interface.

Sliding Panels

There are arrows on edge of every panel (Module Picker, Filmstrip, Navigator, and Tools). If you click on the arrows, the panel will slide away and hide itself. If you click it again, it will slide out and reveal itself.

If you press the tab key, both side panels will slide away, press tab again, and they reappear. If you press shift-tab, ALL panels on the screen slide away, do it again, and they ALL come back.

If you right-click your mouse on any of the arrows on the panels, you will see a menu option with the following options:

Auto Hide & Show

Auto Hide

Manual

Sync with Opposite Panel

Auto Hide & Show

This option causes any of the panels to automatically slide in when the mouse is hovering over it or slide away when the mouse is off of the panel area.

Auto Hide

This is almost the same as above with the difference that the panel will slide out of the way when you move your mouse off the panel area to work on the photos, but when your mouse hovers over that area, it won't appear unless you purposefully click your mouse and it slides back in to view. This is nice so that when you are moving the mouse around all the edges working, those panel don't start sliding out when you don't want them to.

Manual

This is the default and the panels will only slide in to view or out of view when you click on the arrows.

Sync with Opposite Panel

I wondered what this was and never got around to trying it out and now I have it on all the time. There are times when I want to hide the thumbnail filmstrip at the bottom of my window. And at the same time I would always want to hide the Module Picker on "the opposite side" as well. That's two clicks, one at the top and one at the bottom to hide both panels. With this option set, both panels at the top and bottom will hide and show at the same time when either one of the arrows is clicked, thus they will be "synced".

The top panel is only in sync with the bottom panel and the left panel is only in sync with the right panel. However, if you use any of the features above, like Auto Hide & Show or Auto Hide. This feature doesn't seem to "sync" like it does in manual mode.

Aside from that, this is a great feature and I used it all the time now.

Strobist: Canon 580 flash to right of model
Murphy, North Carolina

Off camera lighting adds a nice contrast to the sun. With off camera lighting I place the subject facing away from the sun and towards their shadow, and illuminate the front of them with the flash. For a dramatic look, underexpose the background about a 2 stop difference from the foreground and subject.

Cactus triggers are the way to go for off camera flash, they're cheap and reliable. You can pick up a pair for roughly $30.00 USD. For this shoot, I waited until the night before the assignment was due. I ran down to the L&N Train Depot in Murphy, North Carolina and downtown Murphy to shoot. My two models, Pierce and Manny held the flash for each other while I shot each of them. If you're having somebody hold a flash for you, tell them to create a triangle with you and the model. Hold the flash up high, and point down towards your subject. This is easy lighting also if you're using a stand.

I had 2 hours to process the raw images, choose 20 and edit. This image I applied a lightroom preset filter for quick editting, and in photoshop I created a layer mask and adjusted the curves and saturation on the sky.

OT: Did I mention my fucking camera broke during this shoot? It sucks ass. The Nikon D70 is known to experience shutter failure and that's what happened to me. I wrote a letter to Nikon telling them about the incident and sent a scribbled stick version of myself having a blast with my once working D70, but that was about 2 weeks ago. I'm waiting for my pity surprise brand new D3 to arrive in the mail any day now (no guarantees, it's just a nice thought.) Once I start raking some money in I'm upgrading to the Canon 5D.

Frames might not be to everyone's taste. I like them as I think they can add a lot to a photograph. While playing with Lightroom 2.1RC1 I have found a way to put a simple frame around a photo using Lightroom's Post-Crop Vignette. There are four sliders you can play with. To achieve the effect you see in this photograph just set them as follows -

Amount to -100

Midpoint to 0

Roundness to -100

Feather to 50

I realize this is an abuse of the original intent behind Post_Crop Vignette but if this functionality lets me create quick frames before exporting photos to Flickr™ or Zenfolio I'd rather call it re-purposing instead of misuse.

One of my hopes came true on my B-day this past Saturday night. Two of my favorite peoples made a willing effort together and patched up a 15plus year friendship just for me, to my surprise. Best present I would ever gotten that night. My homegirl V passed me a drink and the party started, surrounded by my close friends, good music and plenty of liquor to go around. I had my camera with me so I snatched up a couple of pictures. Might post some up later, maybe. Later that night, when it was officially my 38th, my brother made a toast on how important true long lasting friendships really mean and that had me choked up for a good minute.

Overall, it was the best B-Day ever. I want to thank everybody that either called, texted, posted a message or somehow reached out to me on this 38th year of my birth. Luv U all!

One of the great new things in Adobe Lightroom 2.0 is the ability to change settings such as exposur

One of the great new things in Adobe Lightroom 2.0 is the ability to change settings such as exposure only in a part of the image. In earlier versions you were just able to adjust exposure in the whole image.

This is not a full tutorial. I assume that you will find the mentioned features of Lightroom yourself. This entry just describes how I used them.

I took the photo below some time ago knowing that the camera will be unable to record both the shade (stairs) and sunshine (one of the strangest buildings in Helsinki) correctly. My plan was to try whether this can be fixed in post-processing and/or to return to the location for a reshoot when the conditions are more suitable for photography.

[caption id="attachment_213" align="alignnone" width="251" caption="The original photo in Lightroom development module."][/caption]

First I used graduated filter to increase exposure in the stairs but not in the building. The exposure increase is strongest at the bottom of the stairs and weakest from the building to the top of the photo. The idea is the same as in a graduated neutral density filter except that in this case I wanted to increase and not to decrease light in the photo.

[caption id="attachment_215" align="alignnone" width="251" caption="After exposure setting using graduated filter."][/caption]

The building is still too bright so I need to decrease exposure there using the adjustment brush. I "paint" the building using a brush, first with a bigger and then a smaller, and then I can adjust exposure (or some other setting) on that area alone.

[caption id="attachment_216" align="alignnone" width="251" caption="Adjustment brush is used to mark the area where local changes to settings are needed."][/caption]

Once I've selected the whole building - I need to investigate whether there are quicker ways to do this in Lightroom - I can set the exposure and the result is below.

[caption id="attachment_218" align="alignnone" width="251" caption="First version of the post-processed image."][/caption]

The photo would still require further post-processing but this was enough for my experiment and it should prove the point of this blog entry as well. Especially when Lightroom freezed several times when I was doing this. To be a better example, the exposure change in the building should be bigger but I'm just recording here what I did.

In some cases I could have just used the graduated filter to decrease exposure in the building (instead of increasing the exposure in the stairs) but then the walls of the buildings on both sides of the stairs would have become darker.

Well the night started out with a card game, and then an adventure with Articia and her friend Chris, to a construction sight, which is where the below photo's of the house / lake / moon land scape were taken. Articia had to work in the morning and so parted after the construction sight which then Chris and I made our way down to Pontiac to an abandoned asylum. And that is where the rest of the pictures from the night are taken. It was good adventure, the asylum was cleaned out which was lame, I prefer the places that weren't properly taken care of when shut down and left everything behind. It makes for way more interesting pictures.

Also not many pictures from the asylum made final cut as all windows were boarded up making for focusing pictures hard as it obviously wasn't as bright in the rooms as it appears in the pictures even with the help of those led light's I had in my camera bag of tricks.

The pictures are seemingly out of order as the night's event's go but the first part of the gallery is images slightly tweaked in lightroom, the second half is not.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy my photographic night.

I would like the ability to take my lightroom catalogs with me. Not to do image processing, but to have access to what images are in them. There is some software called LRViewer which is perfect for this. The only problem is that the catalogs can be huge. My first thought was to burn the catalogs to a DVD. But Adobe uses these incredibly long file names which want work (in Windows) with my DVD software. This is a gross oversight for Adobe. I could copy catalogs to a USB drive but I would need huge drives, and I have enough of drives already.

Am I the only one with this desire (problem)?
