When we talk Comedy, among the first 10 names which come to our mind unarguably include Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean. We all just love his hilarious episodes of the serial and also the few films he has done. His works are like a must for every cinema lover’s home video collection.

      1.       Earlier we saw Govinda doing an inspired act in his film when he gets dressed up while he is also driving his car.

      2.       Recently released “Dhamaal” had Ritesh Deshmukh doing his “Spy Act” a scene from “JOHNY ENGLISH”

      3.       “Dhamaal” also had Javed Jaffery copying his exact sequence, when his hand gets stuck in the back pocket of a man.

      4.       The most recent release “One Two Three” has Sunil Shetty copying Atkinson in two scenes. In the first scene he leaves his one shoe at the top of a car and the car moves on taking his shoe. And in another scene he tries to dry his wet pants at a dryer in the washroom.

There may be many more sequences which couldn’t be noticed but it only shows how brillianlty Rowan Atkinson has performed in his limited appearances. He no doubt has a great influence on comedy makers all over. Would really love to see him more often in movies.

Q: Why Is There A Crucifix, Rather Than A Plain Cross, In Catholic Churches?

Isn't Christ's work on the cross finished?

A: If all of Christ's work was truly finished, we would all be either in heaven or hell right now, there would be no more death, no more sickness, no more sin, likely no more need for the Church, and eternity would be an earthly reality.

That's obviously NOT the case.

There's a crucifix in every Catholic Church, because as the priest "lifts up" the body and blood of Jesus Christ to God, in Heaven, the crucifix reminds us that we are participating in the very same one time, once for all sacrifice, in which Jesus was "lifted up" on the cross.

For this reason ... a cross, complete with the likeness of the crucified body of Jesus (crucifix with corpus) must be prominently displayed above the altar, or in the sanctuary.

Come riporta anche XL di questo mese, tra le proiezioni più interessanti c'è sicuramente il giapponese Tekkon Kinkreet, storia di due fratelli orfani (Kuro e Shiro), che lottano per salvare il proprio quartiere dai tentativi di sfruttamento della mafia, che vorrebbe farne un parco giochi. Il film è uscito a fine 2006 in Giappone, e ad Aprile scorso in Francia. Nell'attesa che da noi qualcuno si decida almeno a farne un dvd,  ecco il trailer:

Sempre restando in area nipponica, sicuramente imperdibile sarà la retrospettiva dedicata alla Toei, storico studio di animazione che nato sessant'anni fa, ha "cullato" anche le prime opere di Miyazaki e Takahata, in particolare "Le avventure del principe del sole Hols" (anch'esso tra i film presenti nella rassegna).

Non può ovviamente mancare la Pixar, che presenterà un making of (di Lifted, corto proiettato in sala prima di Ratatouille e visibile qui sotto), un documentario (The Pixar Story) e My Friend Rat, cortometraggio con protagonista  ancora il piccolo chef.

Tra le anteprime, Horton Hears a Who, dallo stesso studio de L'era glaciale e Robots (la Blue Sky). Storia di un elefante che tenta di proteggere una colonia di minuscoli insetti, tra i dubbi degli altri pachidermi, si avvale anche di Jim Carrey come doppiatore del protagonista. Tante altre le proiezioni, dalle nazionalità più diverse: oltre al nutrita schiera nipponica, sono presenti anche produzioni neozelandesi, argentine, belga e ovviamente statunitensi. Per chi fosse curioso, e avesse un pò di tempo libero, il festival cerca dei volontari. A questo indirizzo ulteriori dettagli.

Per i comuni mortali, il sito ufficiale non dà molte info su location ed eventuali prezzi delle proiezioni. Essendo scaduto il termine per la richiesta degli accrediti, sembra una mancanza niente male.

A questo proposito, piccola nota polemica: perchè chiedendo l'accredito, gli studenti dovrebbero pagare (15€) ed i giornalisti no? I primi vanno per motivi culturali, i secondi in fondo sono là per lavoro.. mah. Il programma del resto è anche molto valido, non credo ci sia bisogno dei soliti regali, per ricevere commenti positivi.

However, I loved The Incredibles. Yes, it also had that "family is the best" vibe that Nemo had, but it was done a lot less sappily. It was sweet but stayed quirky at the same time - and it was a lot darker in parts than Nemo - which basically did the Bambi thing by killing off Nemo's mother, but apart from that there was little to no edge to the film. The Incredibles, on the other hand? Remember the scene when Mr. Incredible finds out what's been happening to all the supers? Or the one where he almost kills Mirage? Also, there's something very real about Mrs. Incredible's fears that her husband is cheating on her - which is a fear you won't find in many movies produced by Disney, I'd wager.

I also liked Ratatouille a lot - and there's a subtle, quiet scene late in the film that brought a lump to my throat. I remembered that lump from another film by the same director: The Iron Giant. More than most directors of animated movies, Brad Bird is a deft hand at mixing the sentimental and the funny, real pathos and sheer goofiness. While Ratatouille is a very different film from The Iron Giant and indeed The Incredibles (the latter two go much more for the iconic, namely '50s cold war paranoia and superheroes), all three of these films show a subtlety that is rare in American animation, so that a short, simple scene can break your heart.

I also liked Lifted, the Pixar short that was shown before Ratatouille. I hadn't been that mad about For the Birds (shown before Monsters Inc., I think) or the jackalope one (Boundin'), since both of these got on my nerves after roughly one minute (they weren't quite as clever or loveable as they thought they were, as far as I'm concerned), Lifted had a simplicity of story and design that worked very well for me. If you haven't seen Ratatouille (Pixar's latest full-length film) then you probably haven't seen "Lifted" which is their latest short film. Think aliens in training for abductions. Fun stuff!

Over the past few days after the release of Ratatouille, people have been stumbling across Cultural Learnings' review of the short film, Lifted, that appears before the new Disney-Pixar release in theatres. It seems, based on the amount of people searching for a way to see the short film, that people want to watch it again. Well, I've got some bad news for you: Disney and Pixar are not going to be letting you do that online any time soon.

Why? Well, because they want you to go see 'Ratatouille' again, of course! If it was available online, that's one less reason for people to bother heading to theatres to see their new animated film, so of course they're going to be militant about keeping the short under wraps. They even deleted a short clip of the short from the AWN Oscars Preview that had been up in February when the short was nominated for an Oscar.

So, if you want to see it again soon, I suggest heading to your local theatre to check out Ratatouille for a 2nd time. However, if you're patient, I think that you'll get a chance to download the short film from iTunes within the next week or so. Last year's One Man Band, screening in front of Cars, was released to the service about a week after that film's release. So, perhaps the end of the week will bring you the fix you're looking for.

Until then, all we can do is wait and hope that an abuctor-in-training doesn't get us killed in our sleep before we get a chance to watch this hilarious little film again.

#3 - 'Lifted'

Now, let me make one thing clear: I had technically planned on putting this earlier within the series, as it isn't exactly my 3rd biggest reason to see this film, but then I forgot about it. However, as I've considered it, I think that it perhaps deserves a spot high on this list regardless of how fantastic Ratatouille itself is. Because, like most Pixar films, 'Ratatouille' ships to your local theatre with an animated short film attached to it. That animated short is the Oscar-nominated 'Lifted' from Gary Rydstrom, and it is Reason #3 you should see Ratatouille. Why? Because it is both stylistically and thematically connected with Brad Bird's feature film, and prepares you well for the greatness to follow.

Lifted is a charming piece of physical comedy that finds itself fitting right in with the other silent Pixar shorts such as One Man Band (Which premiered in front of Cars last year) and For the Birds which debuted in front of Monsters Inc. It is the story of a small green alien who is taking a test at the human abduction portion of an Alien's training. That involves, in this case, extracting a young male from his room by pressing a series of buttons on a giant switchboard reminiscent of a sound designer's board (There's a reason for this). In the process, hilarious gags ensue and laughs are had.

Gary Rydstrom, the short's director, is in fact a sound designer, and has never quite directed anything like this before. That inspiration can be seen throughout: not only in the switchboard, but in the use of a sterile soundtrack and the use of sound effects to both punctuate the existing humour and add humour in their own right. That is what gives Lifted much of its charm, and perhaps some of its best gags.

However, the reason I want to highlight this is that not only is it added value (The short is great to see on the big screen, and original content before a film sure beats nothing but commercials), but it also prepares the audience well for the film to follow. Like Ratatouille, which employs a great deal of physical comedy, Lifted is all about great physical comedy gags and punctuates its jokes well. It may not be subtle, but its broad comedy gets you laughing and puts you in a good mindset to forget that you're watching a rat cooking and enjoy the film's genius in the process.

Last year, One Man Band actually occasionally overshadowed Cars for some moviegoers, and there was no thematic or content flow between them. Here, Lifted contains the same type of comedy that Ratatouille mines from in its own story, and as a result you have a complete package. This extra few minutes of original Pixar material is something that you don't get with too many other films, and it's Reason #3 you should see Pixar's Ratatouille.

You know me and the Pixar Shorts... Love em. So, hoping Lifted will be on the pre-roll as well.
