Life and the world is full of choices, some that cannot be avoided and some that can be. Choices mak

Life and the world is full of choices, some that cannot be avoided and some that can be. Choices make us what we are and what we can have on our laptops. Hold on I am not going to write something philosophical about life and choices rather I am planning to put up something more useful. Something about my experiences with various Linux operating systems on my SONY VAIO VGN-CR120E.

First Love - Ubuntu 7.04:

The machine is a VAIO CR series and has lot of OEM specific softwares and firmware (that is a guess though). It had come with Windows Vista Home Premium installed by the manufacturer. I had the chance to work on UNIX earlier but never with Linux until to be specific July 2007. I had installed Ubuntu 7.04 then and it had loads of issues syncing with the machine. They would not work in peace. The resolution of VGN-CR120E was 1280 X 800 and Ubuntu 7.04 would put up only a 800 X 600 screen, it was annoying. The volume control would not work. LAN was good but when it came to wireless it was more than a night mare. After hours of browsing through forums, blogs and help sites nothing could be done about finding a way to make the wireless work. Every time I had to use wireless I had to boot back into Vista. But I must really appreciate Ubuntu on its speed, it was leagues ahead and scores very high when compared to Windows. Power management was again a problem with battery draining out within 2 hours and lots of heat coming out while in Vista it would last upto 3.5 hours to 4 hours.

Gutsy Gibbon does the Funky Chicken:

First love can never be forgotten. Though the second can be better ;-). Ubuntu 7.10 or the Gutsy Gibbon released in October 2007 had fixed the issues with the screen resolution and the VAIO was able to put up a bright 1280 X 800 screen across. I was taken aback when I realized that wireless was working fine with 7.10. It was a great relief for me as most of the time I prefer working on wireless than on LAN. More mobility probably. Volume control was doing good and there seemed to be no problems. The only place where Windows would score more would be the UI, with Windows having more refined UI and Ubuntu comparatively needs a load of improvement. Overall I was very much satisfied with the Gibbon as it impressed with its Funky Chicken moves.

KDE 4.0ed:

If there was anything close to coming as competition to the UI of Windows I think the first would be Mac which is leagues ahead and next would be the KDE environment with good graphics. It was July and Ubuntu 8.04 release would be two months old. I wanted something different this time, I chose Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 4.0. This was the new version of KDE after KDE 3. Though I never used KDE before, I liked the looks of Kubuntu 8.04. There was no problem with the wireless, just completed the installation and rebooted the system and there you go with wireless all configured and ready for use. It was never so easy it was as if it knew what to do all by itself. There were no resolution problems too. Kudos for Kubuntu 8.04 on this. But there were some down sides though, audio would stop working and the system had to be rebooted for it to resume audio functionality. The KDE would crash often and throw up windows stating KDE has crashed. I felt KDE 4 was bit unrefined. Overall Kubuntu 8.04 scored a good first impression in my books.

The Gecko:

One of my friends would always want me to install OpenSUSE on my system as the second OS. I thought he was sarcastic and wanted to experiment with my system. I was wrong. When I saw the OpenSUSE 11.0 installation interface I was mesmerised by it looks. Well a beauty would always lack brains, that was my conception, again which was proved wrong. May be my conception was correct in, well...you know the other case I guess. openSUSUE had a host of user friendly stuff. The partitioning utility in the installation was advanced than other versions of Linux I had used. The DVD comes along with a lot of softwares that could be installed along with the OS itself, I chose to install Qt and Eclipse along with various other stuff that seemed to be interesting. More interestingly the DVD gave me the option of installing either of the GNOME, KDE 3 or KDE 4 version of OpenSUSE on my system. I selected the KDE 3 option which was the mature and stable version amongst the two KDE versions. The installation took around 35 minutes to one hour, not sure precisely though, the longest for any Linux installation I had done. Once done I had the boot screen appear with that green background in style and I chose to log into OpenSUSE 11.0 and lo and behold there it was so beautiful and so appealing to the eye. A masterpiece of UI among free Linux distros. But all this was not without a cost. The memory usage was around more than a GB on my system with a 2GB RAM. But I would not bet big on memory when it comes to UI. The toughest part was configuring the wireless. After swimming through oceans of forums, blogs and help sites I could not find a way to bring up the WiFi. Finally I had to quit.

Overall OpenSUSE was the Helen I could not resist falling in love with for all its great KDE desktop. On the wireless side it scores a bad zero on ten, ten being the best on the scale. Overall I was able to see the colors of the Gecko.

Hardy Heron:

After the eventful romance with OpenSUSE I had to break up with the Gecko with a heavy heart and make place for the Heron on my 10GB Linux partition. Ubuntu is one of the best distros I had come across and would always look forward for the next release hoping to see something better and my hopes were never laid down. Ubuntu Hardy Heron or Ubuntu 8.04 is the latest version of Ubuntu from Canonical. The first time I installed, the wireless was not working. Even after trying out some fixes and changing a few settings I was not able to put up the wireless and I was dissapointed.

[caption id="attachment_58" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron"][/caption]

I tried out connecting to the net on LAN and noticed that it was working fine but I felt handicapped with no wireless. I decided to reinstall Heron and went ahead with it. This time the wireless got automatically configured and I was able to browse right away though I was not able to figure what went wrong with the first installation. The installation was quick and fast. Later I customized Ubuntu with new themes and new set of icons. I was feeling good. I have not seen a downside with this installaion till now except when I wanted to connect to a broadband connection. May be I have to refer some help for this. On the memory part it was using up only 400 MB out of the 2 GB RAM on my system, definitely scores a bonus 10 on that one.

These were my experiences with various LINUX distros I tried to install on my VGN-CR120E. Each one unique to its own credit. Only thing that always runs at the back of my mind is that I have not tried Fedora even once, the next probably should be it.

I would sign off now and return back with my next blog which would be most probably - 'The Glowing Butt' if nothing more interesting comes up the way. Till then b-bye.

I decided to keep openSUSE 11 KDE 4 on one box, Ubuntu on the laptop, Ubuntu on the eeePC and on the last box I'll be getting rid of Kubuntu 3.5.9 and going with something else. I am debating between GoblinX and Elive. Both of them have new releases this week and I have been waiting for both of them to try them out. One of them will be left on a computer for longer than a few days, I don't know which one yet but I will find out pretty soon.

I really like Ubuntu they have a fine product but I cannot use Kubuntu anymore or until Canonical decides to put more resources towards it.

Following the simple instructions contained in Project Neon you will able to enjoy the last developing packages for Amarok 2.0 without waiting the release of the stable version. Project Neon also provides simple instructions to install Amarok 2.0 on your Ubuntu in just five minutes. Last but not least, it is necessary to remember that Amarok 2.0 is not in its final version yet and it could potentially create some serious problems on your PC. To install it just add:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu hardy main

in your sources (/etc/apt/sources.list) and the install it using the following command lines:

$ sudo apt-get uptdate

Using Gnome for the past 6months,got me bored, and with the release of Kubuntu KDE4. i decided to try it out. After checking out some screenshots online, i decided to download and install it. Expecting something really interesting and eye candy..

But What it had in store for me was just disspointment .KDE4 is bugs galore .for starters i had problems with the Oxygen icons (although the icons look really great) Further problems arose with the widgets after enabling a widget i couldn't see it!! finally i gave up on that.
Perhaps something was wrong with my installation, i couldn't even change certain settings. They were all just disabled so no changes could be made to them.

Although the taskbar and the menu great, with a clear clock. I think i'll still stick to KDE 3.5.9 for the time being. I can now understand the reason behind Kubuntu 8.04 not being LTS.

Hopefully with the release of KDE 4.1 due in july, perhaps a more stable and bug free version can be expected...

But for now, i'm switching back to Ubuntu and Kubuntu 3,5,9

He utilizado Kubuntu 8.04 (32 bits) y Kooka.

I've had some trouble in the past getting AutoGK running in Wine on Kubuntu, but it had been a while since I tried so I decided to give it a go again to see how much Wine has progressed.

The Wine HQ profile for AutoGK claims that version 2.40 runs fine on Wine 0.9.53, so I went ahead downloaded it from AfterDawn after some searching. It installed just fine, and I downloaded the DLL files suggested by this site (it's in German but is basic enough to be able to make out). Even after doing this I was having problems - as soon as I started it, I got the errors below:

followed by,

After these errors it would start, but every time I tried to open an IFO file, it told me that it was unable to parse, and if I opened a VOB directly, it said it was an invalid stream.

Just by chance, I cd'd to the Wine directory where wine installed it to check out the files in the directory. After poking about for a bit, I tried one last time...and it started just fine!

Not sure what I did, I went ahead and added it to my dock (using a hi-res icon found here). I went about encoding a DVD file that I had ripped using DVDFab (which works beautifully right away in Wine!) and watched it afterwards in Kaffeine. Satisfied, I decided to encode some more.

But starting the launcher from my dock, I got the same errors as before. Confused, I tried poking around my winecfg settings and got nothing. I decided to run the program in the same setting as before, so I cd'd again to the install directory and ran it from there. It worked again! It seems that, for whatever reason, running AutoGK in Wine requires that you be in the install directory.

I wrote a very simple bash script to put on my dock icon.

[sourcecode language='python']#!/bin/bash
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/AutoGK
wine "C:\Program Files\AutoGK\AutoGK.exe"[/sourcecode]

Save this to any directory you'd like and chmod it to 755 so that it is executable. Then run it any time you want!

If this was helpful, please drop me a line through e-mail or a comment.

UPDATE: To install AutoGK, you have to use a virtual desktop in your winecfg settings. Once you're done installing you can remove the virtual desktop.

As of today it has been two years since I changed from Windows XP to GNU/Linux. I started my Linux

As of today it has been two years since I changed from Windows XP to GNU/Linux. I started my Linux experience with OpenSuSE. I remember after formating my computer I could not get my Internet connection working. I work a few hours to get it. If you have been reading this blog you know that I am now using Ubuntu/Kubuntu and I remember that right after installing Ubuntu I did not have to do anything the internet worked right out of the box.

It has been a very interesting two years, I have a lot about computer since the switch. I could do almost anything when I used Windows XP and it took maybe one year for me to be able to say that I could do anything with Linux. I got a lot of help from Google, forums, various Wikis, How-Tos and several blogs. When I am unsure I just search the internet with Google and most of the time someone else has had the same problems before and a solution has already been found.

Two weeks ago I installed Ubuntu on a friends computer and he is having problems with the computer freezing. I think his problem is faulty RAM because the computer had these same problems using Windows XP. He is now shopping for RAM. There are several reasons for switching over to a GNU/Linux systems, the main reason that I upgraded to Linux was no more software piracy for me. Two years ago almost all the software on my computer was downloaded using P2P software and being a cheap SOB I did not pay when I could get it free. I felt somewhat guilty and to get rid of the guilt I either had to spend thousands of dollars or go with free open source software. I chose the cheapest path and I did the right choice.

Most people will use their computers only to surf the Internet and do a a bit of word processing. GNU/Linux is perfect for these users. If you don't mind using "non-free" codecs, most users fall in this category, you can watch DVD's and listen to music. I have stated before that where GNU/linux is lacking, is in the gaming area. With the money you have saved (Vista $239, Nero $99, Microsoft Office $179...) you can buy either an Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or a Wii. Maybe you can purchase two of the three gaming console if you use Gimp instead of Adobe Photoshop ($699).

If you are willing to do things differently and you are ready to learn something new you should start thinking of switching to something better, why settle for mediocrity when the alternative is so much better?

I have written about browsers before. Now that I am using the newest versions of Ubuntu, it is time

I have written about browsers before. Now that I am using the newest versions of Ubuntu, it is time to speak about them once again. In Ubuntu Firefox 3 beta 5 is the default web browser. Before I updated my Ubuntu computers I was using epiphany. The reason I was using Epiphany because I found it faster than Firefox and less memory use. The only issue I have with Epiphany is less extensions than Firefox. I had run the Betas of Ubuntu and had freezes and crashes both with Firefox and Epiphany. When I did a fresh install of Ubuntu on three computers, I decided to give this newer version of Firefox a chance. After two weeks I'll be going back to Epiphany. Firefox still freezes and I prefer the feel of Epiphany, maybe I'll go back to Firefox once they are done testing it and are in the official release.

In my Kubuntu installs I am using Konqueror. I had said that Konqueror is slow. Not anymore, Konqueror is faster than anything I have tried. I don't know what the did but it worked. I do have issues with the KDE 4 version on Konqueror, such as not being able to play streaming audio. I have no such problems with Konqueror in KDE 3.5.9. At work I have installed Safari from Apple to give it a go, but I haven't done any thing with it yet.

I haven't been using Opera since updating my computers, but as soon as I finish this post I'll be installing it on the KDE 4 computer and hopefully It'll have streaming audio working. I'll let you know.

# aptitude install asoundconf-gtk

I have installed Ubuntu on three computers. I have installed Kubuntu on two computers, one with KDE 3.5.9 and the other with KDE 4.0.2. All went well with the installations except for a stupid mistake I made because I was not paying attention. I accidentally erased a drive containing data that I wanted to save. I checked of ext2 instead of ext3 on this drive and lost all the information on it. I was fairly pissed off at myself at the time but there is nothing I can do now. What is done is done.

One of the installs was for another co-worker and I am glad that I did not have to install Windows again. GNU/Linux is a pleasure to install whilst Windows is hard work to install. By the end of the weekend I have two more installs to do and then I rest for a while.

If you haven't tried Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/Mythbuntu/...buntu now is the time. It is a great distribution.

There are many (not all are very good) chess games in Linux. There is the one installed by default w

There are many (not all are very good) chess games in Linux. There is the one installed by default with the small game packages that come with Ubuntu and most versions of Linux that use Gnome, but I do not like this one very much. It is ok for basic play, but it is really not that good.

Another chess game that is slightly better is Dreamchess. This one looks fine and plays decently, but I do not really care for the pictures that represent those playing. There are also far better chess games in Linux. For an some reason though, I cannot get Dreamchess to load on the system I am currently using. Maybe it is because I am using the ATI Rage 128 Pro and the fact that this card has no driver in Linux. I should still be able to play a game of chess though.

PyChess is another chess game in Linux. I do not like either of the chess engines that PyChess can use (GNUChess and PyChess), but maybe it was just the way that PyChess used them. The computer made decisions to quickly and did not play very well. I also believe that the artists for this program could have made the pieces look nicer and appear more physically attractive.

Brutal Chess is actually pretty good. The board and pieces look nice, the AI is good, it actually take time to make a move. Alas, this game will also not load correctly. I imagine that I am having the same problem that Dreamchess is giving me, which is to bad.

3D Chess is an odd, yet interesting game. You have three boards upon which to play, a few new pieces, and no manual to tell me how the new pieces work!!! But this game looks quite cool though, a bit like chess in Star Trek. All it needs is a manual or a link to a website containing documentation. Also, there is no AI to handle this game, so you must have another person to play with. I also like the board names which are x, y, and z.

My favorite chess game in Linux though is pouet Chess. The computer fights quite effectively in this. Depending on the setting of difficulty, the system can take anywhere from two to ninety seconds to make a decision on a move. Playing against pouet Chess is harder than other game or person that I have ever played. I personally recommend this game for anyone really interested in chess. The board and pieces are also beautifully designed, more so than in any of the other chess games, including the two that refuse to run on my current system. I will probably add more to this review later, but for now I will just add a few pictures. Have fun everyone.

Playing Pychess How do I play 3D Chess again? My favorite, pouet Chess(now only if I cold beat it)

Yesterday Ubuntu released it's latest version 8.04 also known as the Hardy Heron along with Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu. The main difference between these distributions is that Ubuntu uses the GNOME Desktop Environment, Kubuntu uses KDE and Xubuntu uses Xfce Desktop Environment. Edubuntu is simply the educational version on Ubuntu. Since i am a Kubuntu user i will focus mainly on the features of the Latest Kubuntu.

Kubuntu has come with two different releases, one is the stable KDE 3.5.9 and the other one is a Remix Featuring the latest release of KDE 4.0.

Kubuntu 8.04 now features two versions of the K Desktop Environment, a
powerful graphical desktop environment which combines the ease of use,
contemporary functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the
technological superiority of the Kubuntu operating system. The stable
release of KDE in Kubuntu 8.04 is version 3.5.9. The edgier release of KDE
in Kubuntu 8.04 is version 4.0.3.

(This text has been taken from the Kubuntu website)

KDE 4

Some features of the KDE 4 are:

Plasma - Size and the position of the panel is now configurable

KHTML - repainting issues addressed and KHTML now supports more non-HTML4-compliant documents

session switching has been included

and more...

KDE 4 is available on the Kubuntu 8.04 Remix CD or it can be installed by typing apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop in the Linix Konsole.

KDE 3

The KDE 3.5.9 is the stable version of KDE which includes the following features:

A favourite email folders view in KMail as well as drag and drop support for the folders

Easier scheduling in KOrganizer

KGeography and Kig fixes within the KDE Edu module

Fixes to KPDF

Desktop Special Effects

Kubuntu 8.04 now provides the ability for 3D Desktop Effects such as spinning cube, true transparency, wobbly windows and other special effects. The Compiz Engine is needed to be able to use these Desktop Effects. There are 4 levels of Desktop Effects:

No Effects - All effects are disabled and the KDE Window Manager (KWin) is used

Standard Effects - Some simple effects such as shadows or shrinking windows

Extra Effects - Enhancing the Standard Effects and using more other effects

Custom Effects - This needs the Compiz Configuration Manager installed in the system to tweak the effects according the the user's choice.

File System Support

Kubuntu 8.04 provides many new advancements and support for file systems. There are two new features in Kubuntu 8.04. It is now possible to install an encrypted file system during installation. This option is currently available only on the Alternate Installation CD. Every partition can be encrypted apart from the /boot partition providing the user a more secure version of Kubuntu. The second new feature is the ability to easily read and write any NTFS partitions.

Printer Auto Configuration
Kubuntu 8.04 now provides an applet that automatically configures a printer when it is attached to your system. This new applet also provides users with feedback on the status of the printer installation and configuration.

Wubi

Kubuntu 8.04 or Live CD's provide a new installer for those running Windows. It is now possible to install Kubuntu as if it were any other application to be installed in Windows. There is no need to modify the partitions of the PC or use a different loader.

I had some problems with my HP Deskjet F4180 All-in-One, the scanner part anyway. I downloaded the HPLIP utility through Synaptic, installed it, and set up my printer using "sudo hp-setup". The printing part worked fine, but scanning to my computer always failed in Ubuntu 8.04. There was no such problem in earlier versions of Ubuntu. So I looked around at ubuntuforums.org, then went to hplip.sourceforge.net, and downloaded HPLIP 2.8.4(automatic installer), saving it to my desktop.

To installed this utility, first run the command "cd" in whatever directory you saved the HPLIP utility in (example: "cd /home/dirk/desktop"), and then run "sh-hplip 2.8.4.run". Make sure that you have your Linux installation disc ready. Once running the last command given in the terminal, you have a few different installation options which are: automatic, a web installer, and custom(what I used). You should be able to figure it out from here but I have attached many pictures just in case some part of my instructions made no sense. Godspeed to you.

I have been using Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 for a week now it runs better than Kubuntu 7.10. Kubuntu 7.10 wa

I have been using Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 for a week now it runs better than Kubuntu 7.10. Kubuntu 7.10 was so horribly slow and full of bugs. I fail to understand how anyone could have used it. But the newest version of Kubuntu is actually nice. For the most part it runs well, but sometimes the KDE 4 programs just sort of "stick", I guess that would be the best way to put it. I open say, Dragon Player, click on something in it and it just freezes for a few moments. But the KDE 3.5 programs do not do this, they run a little slow but they do not just freeze on me at least. And for some reason the Konsole/KDE4 does not work and KsCD will not play a CD. I also see no standby option for Kubuntu for some reason.

Now I have a few good things to say about KDE 4. It seems to run quite faster than KDE 3.5, the Application Launcher is far better organized, the desktop and menu bars look much nicer, and as I have already said, it runs much faster. I am for once not reviling how Kubuntu works(or does not work). I actually like KDE and Kubutu now. But of course I still like Ubuntu and Xubuntu better, and therefore Gnome and Xfce. In case you are interested in Kubuntu 8.04 or KDE 4 I have posted many new screenshots up of these items. And of course, if you want to download any version or derivative of Ubuntu 8.04 go to http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/beta.

Before I finish writing this, I guess that I should state why you should use Ubuntu 8.04. The main reason is that Ubuntu 8.04 has much better hardware support. As I have said before my system can finally go into standby mode properly, except for the sound card not waking back up when coming out of standby mode, instead of just getting stuck trying to turn off some hardware devices and going into a zombie state. My ATI video card also works much better. I guess that this is the only real reason to upgrade to the newest version of Ubuntu. I would really like to know what all of you reading this think of KDE 4 and Kubuntu 8.04. What have your experiences been? Alas, it is time for me to get back to work now so that is all for now.

Thursday after work I updated my laptop from Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron beta. Everything went fine with the update. I like the new Clock in which we get the weather and we can add cities from different time zones. Transmission is the new bit torrent client, I haven't tried it here But I had used it when I was running Elive on one of my computer. I beleive that the powers that be who decides which applications should be installed by defaults, should look at Deluge as the bit torrent client of choice. It is a full featured client and it is easy to use. About two minutes ago I started using Gnome-do and I like it very much. It is sort of like Katapult on the KDE desktop. There are still some bug, like no hibernation on my laptop & Epiphany crashes for no apparent reason. It is going to be a fine release once all the bugs are worked out. If you are adventurous install it now but if you want to wait until it is perfected you only have to wait until April 24 2008.

After the seeing how smoothly Ubuntu was updated on my laptop, I decided to update my Kubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 beta. I already am using the KDE 4.0.3 version of Kubuntu 8.04 so the next step was the KDE 3.5.9 version of Hardy Heron. This time the update was very painful. I had to install it from scratch after the update because I could not do anything with it. Thank God for live cd's because there were some data that I had not backed up before attempting this update. From what I have been experiencing Kubuntu is buggier than Ubuntu. The KDE 4 version of Kubuntu has less bugs from my experience. Everything will be fixed by April 24th and both Kubuntu distros will be great.

Based upon some of the search terms that have been used to reach this site I guess I should write up a short post on how to get Java working in Ubuntu 8.04. One way is to symbolically link the proprietary version of Java you are using to your web browser. The other option is to install the open source version of Java, IcedTea.You can run the command "sudo apt-get install icedtea-java7-jre" to get it. It is also possible to get Java 6 to work correctly by linking it symbolically to Firefox, but for me this failed. I would lookin the ubuntu forums here at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=62186 if you wanted to use Java 6 and get it up and running correctly. Maybe you will have better luck than I did in getting it to work.
