Untuk mendapatkan knoppix anda hanya perlu mendownload ISO file image di www.knopper.net/knoppix/ dan di sini ada beberapa pilihan mirror untuk mendownload file tersebut. File tersebut hendaklah di'burn'kan ke dalam CD dengan menggunakan perisian yang biasa anda gunakan. Il LiveCD prevede l'aggiornamento del database delle definizioni dei virus, sia se la macchina è collegata a internet e sia in modo manuale. Per quest'ultima ipotesi si può scaricare su pendrive o disco il file fsdbupdate.run e aggiornare il DB con il comando da console come root

Per provare il livecd, non avendo virus, ne sistemi che offrono loro vitto e alloggio, ho usato VirtualBox con un disco formattato FAT e salvando la stringa di test del virus eicar.com, innocuo e che serve appunto a controllare che un antivirus sia in grado di rilevarlo, ma senza che questo sia un test efficace e definitivo ;)

La stringa di eicar.com è reperibile su vari siti (vedi virus eicar.com), non so come wordpress ve la farà vedere, provo a scriverla come codice:

A little out of date, but still considered the strongest bootable forensics solution (of the open-source kind). Also has a few pen-testing tools on it.

FIRE is a portable bootable cdrom based distribution with the goal of providing an immediate environment to perform forensic analysis, incident response, data recovery, virus scanning and vulnerability assessment.

9. nUbuntu

nUbuntu or Network Ubuntu is fairly much a newcomer in the LiveCD arena as Ubuntu, on which it is based, is pretty new itself.

Not strictly a security distro, but definately the most streamlined and smooth LiveCD distribution. The new version (soon to be released - Knoppix 5) has seamless NTFS writing enabled with libntfs+fuse.

KNOPPIX is a bootable CD or DVD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk.

                Earlier today, I decided to spend some time researching on various Linux distributions and how to install/use them. Whilst I got the first objective done, I am still in the process of learning my way around a Linux environment, as it is (at least for me) quite different from Windows.

                I am currently working with Knoppix, a Linux distribution designed to run off a CD or DVD. I particularly like this distro, as it means I do not have to install, re-partition, or dual-boot anything on my computer. Knoppix uses the KDE environment and runs without interfering with your current operating system, leaving your computer's hard disk and data intact.

                I am still in the process of getting acquainted with Knoppix, as I am trying to familiarize myself with the file system and operating the text-based terminal. I have always been hesitant to install a Linux distro on my computer, as I do not have time to deal with any potential technical problems that may arise during installation. Knoppix is a nice start into learning to use Linux environments without going through the hassle of installing one yourself.

                From what I've read, Knoppix is a leader in LiveCD distributions, with many others following in its footsteps. You can be sure I'll be looking for more distributions like Knoppix, I have already read of a LiveCD distribution of Ubuntu.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\windows\system32\config\system

A quick Google suggested that the registry had been corrupted. I tried various things to recover the OS, including using the XP recovery console to manually restore a backup of the registry. It didn't work.

No problem. I have a fairly paranoid back-up regime. All the important information on my laptop is also stored on my subversion server. I could just reformat the laptop, reinstall the applications (including subversion) and check out all the files again. Except that I hadn't thought to include my wife's files on the laptop in my back-up plans. Oops. After hours of making no progress recovering the data. I tried Knoppix. I got access to the data in not much longer than it took to download Knoppix.

Knoppix is a Linux distribution that can run from a CD (i.e. it doesn't require installation on your harddisk). It is also capable of understanding Windows file systems. To use it:

1. Download the latest Knoppix CD .iso file (approx 700MB). Note - The DVD version is much larger.
2. Burn the .iso to a CD, for example using the free Active ISO Burner.
3. Boot the stricken machine from the Knoppix CD. You may need to change your system to BIOS to boot from the CD first. How you access the BIOS varies between machines. On my Toshiba laptop you press F2 as the system boots.
4. Drag and drop data from the stricken machine to a USB harddisk or memory stick. Or copy to another machine using FTP from Knoppix. The Knoppix user interface is easy enough to use, even if you haven't used Linux before.

Note that you don't have to enter your Windows password to recover the files. This brings homw how easy it is to get data off a password protected Windows machine, if you have physical access to the machine. Another good reason to encrypt sensitive data on your laptop, for example using the free Truecrypt.

Thanks Knoppix! I've added you to my mental list of worthy software causes to make a small donation to one day. Obviously you need access to a functioning machine to do the above. So why not make a Knoppix CD now, while everything is fine? You never know when you might need it.

Baik, sekarang saatnya menjalankan dan menginstall Knoppix dari USB Flash. Setting-up USB flash dilakukan di windows . Untuk itu alat dan bahan yang dibutuhkan:

1. USB flash 1GB atau yang lebih besar.
2. Knoppix Linux ISO.
3. HP USB format tool (optional).
4. fixk.zip.

Langkah langkahnya:
1. Download HP http://files.filefront.com/HPUSBFWEXE/;8576665;/fileinfo.html dan format usb flash anda dengan format Fat atau Fat32 file system.
2. Buatlah folder dengan nama Flash di komputer anda.
3. Download Knoppix Linux ISO dan pindahkan ke dalam folder Flash.
4. Download fixkp.zip di http://pendrivelinux.com/downloads/fixkp.zip dan ekstrak ke dalam folder Flash.
5. Klik fixkp.bat yang ada dalam folder Flash dan tekan enter atau any key.

6. Kopi semua file di folder knoppix yang ada dalam folder Flash ke dalam usb flash anda.
7. Klik makeboot.bat yang ada dalam usb flash anda supaya dapat booting dari device tersebut. Pastikan makeboot.bat yang anda klik adalah makeboot.bat yang ada di usb flash, bukan yang ada dalam folder Flash.

8. Reboot ulang, setup biosnya agar dapat boot dari flash, dan booting Knoppix
dari usb flash dapat berjalan.

Bagaimana menggunakan linux (live cd) sebagai file server darurat ?. server darurat ini dapat dijadikan alternatif ketika (komputer) server berbasis linux dalam sebuah jaringan mengalami masalah. misal file server yang memiliki beberapa drive yang di-share di jaringan mengalami masalah hard disk pada root drive-nya. meski drive lain pada file server dalam kondisi baik tapi bila akses root drive-nya rusak, otomatis sharing drive pun tidak akan aktif.

Aplikasi file server yang akan digunakan adalah samba. Samba adalah salah satu file server yang sudah populer di kalangan pengguna linux. Samba dapat menyediakan ruang untuk keperluan sharing data, bahkan untuk multi platform. pada kasus ini (root drive rusak) akan digunakan sistem operasi linux live dengan samba terintegerasi di dalamnya. Contoh distro yang dapat digunakan adalah KNOppIX Linux. Knoppix menyediakan sebuah wizard berbasis grafis untuk memudahkan dalam mengkonfigurasi samba server. bagi yang telah mengetahui konfigurasi yang diinginkan tentunya tidak diharuskan untuk menggunakan wizard dari knoppix tersebut untuk membuat file server, cukup edit file konfigurasinya di "/etc/samba/smb.conf" lalu jalankan dengan perintah

"knoppix@xxx$sudo /etc/init.d/samba start"

untuk menggunakan utility konfigurasi samba klik "K Menu | knoppix | services | start samba server" . program ini juga akan meminta user membuat password jika memang belum ada, karena knoppix membutuhkan sebuah suername dan password untuk mengakses setiap shared folder yang dibuatnya.

Setelah konfirmasi permintaan password, knoppix akan menanyakan apakah user ingin mengekspor semua hard disk yang ada sehigga remote pc dapat mengaksesnya dari jaringan. apabila jawaban 'no' script akan membuat file smb.conf yang melakukan share pada direktori 'home' dan printer yang terpasang pada sistem. apabila jawaban 'yes' maka script akan menambahkan semua hard disk dan cd/dvd drive yang terdeteksi oleh knoppix lalu secara otomatis memount sewaktu diakses. setiap kali menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan tadi, sript akan membuat file smb.conf dan menjalankan samba.

apabila hanya ingin men-share semua drive pada sistem dalam mode baca (read only) tanpa akses tulis (write), maka instalasi telah selesai dilakukan. pada setting default, share folder akan terlihat pada workgroup yang bernama 'workgroup' sebagai pc yang bernama knoppix. shared drive akan memiliki nama yang sama dengan nama drive yang ada pada desktop lokal seperti hda1, hdc, dan sebagainya. untuk dapat melakukan konfigurasi setiap drive, dapat diperiksa pada bagian akhir file '/etc/samba/smb.conf' seperti di bawah ini :

[hda1]

postexec=/bin/mount/mnt/hda1

Sharing seperti ini mengharuskan user untuk login dengan username 'knoppix' dan password yang telah dibuat untuk account knoppix. knoppix secara otomatis akan melakukan proses mount drive saat diakses dan unmount setelah selesai. meskipun samba secara default dikonfigurasi untuk melakukan sharing dengan akses penuh, knoppix hanya melakukan mounting drive secara read only. agar akses tulis dapat dilakukan, perlu dilakukan modifikasi parameter preexec pada file samba. conf menjadi

preexec=sudo /bin/mount -o rw /mnt/hda1

Untuk drive lainya ganti hda1 dengan nama drive yang sesuai. untu mengizinkan setiap user dapat mengakses shared drive tanpa password, tambahkan baris 'guest ok=yes' pada konfigurasi sharing.

Untuk membuat sharing baru secara instant agar pertukaran file antar pc di jaringan memungkinkan, cukup tambahkan share baru paa konfigurasi yang ada. berikut ini dicontohkan bagaimana membuat sharing direktori bernama 'dataShare' dalam direktori home knoppix. untuk itu, buat direktori dengan perintah

knoppix@xxx$mkdir /home/knoppix/dataShare

selanjutnya edit file '/etc/samba/smb.conf' sebagai root tambahkan baris

[dataShare]

guest ok=yes

Setelah menyimpan perubahan tadi, sharing baru 'dataShare' akan terlihat dan dapat diakses. perlu diingat bahwa sharing tersebut tidak berasal dari hard disk namun disimpan pada memori pc. oleh karena itu kapasitas dibatasi oleh besar memori yang tersedia.

• facilità di personalizzazione (remastering) facilità con cui si può modificare e ricostruire il livecd. E' molto importante la presenza di script che permettono di ottenere una nuova live con i programmi installati direttamente dal livecd ( Live-Remastering)
• Persistenza - fare in modo di poter salvare il lavoro ed i cambiamenti fatti su live senza dovere effettuare remastering, utile per portarsi il lavoro d'appresso
• Prontezza all'uso, velocità di avvio e driver preinstallati ( senza richiedere download aggiuntivi)
• Programmi inclusi nel livecd
• Facilità d'uso, distro su cui sono basati, cura nell'ambiente grafico

Inziamo analizzando le distro in questa classifica da quella che ritengo più inadatta alla migliore

• Ubuntu 8.04 La distro più apprezzata del momento purtroppo mal si appresta ad un uso come livecd-liveusb ( non è questo lo scopo per cui è concepita ), non include tool per creare facilmente la persistenza, il remastering si fa solo tramite UCK, che benché resti un'alternativa valida, non può reggere il confronto con la comodità delle soluzioni live-remastering implementate dalle altre distro. Si aggiunge il fatto che né driver né codec proprietari sono installati, richiedendo una connessione internet anche per ascoltare un mp3. Voto : 6
• Dreamlinux 3.1Basata su debian ( Morphix in particolare ), Dreamlinux implementa il live remastering ed è facilmente installabile come liveUsb su chiavetta. Purtroppo non ha opzioni di persistenza.
  Non mi ha fatto una buona impressione, principalmente per via dell'interfaccia ( che mira anche troppo ad imitare macos, perdendo in semplicità e coerenza )

  Contro: Niente persistenza, interfaccia non immediata
• Knoppix 5.3.1 Ebbene la prima e forse la più conosciuta distro live non si è dimostrata all'altezza, benché abbia alcuni tool per creare immagini di persistenza ed un'immensità di pacchetti inclusi, non facilità in alcun modo il remastering che si deve fare manualmente tramite un lungo processo. Mi ha dato inoltre l'impressione di essere decisamente poco curata: i menù sono sovraccarichi, le applicazioni messe alla rinfusa e non categorizzate a dovere ( il menù “Lost and Founds” di KDE è strapieno). Si merita a stento un sette :)Pro: Un enormità di pacchetti inclusi
  Contro: No live remastering, poca cura, solo in versione dvd
• PclinuxOs Minime 2008
  Molto migliorata dalla versione 2007, PclinuxOs si merita un bel secondo posto, ha dalla sua parte la potenza del control center di Mandriva 2007, ed un buon tool per il liveremastering. I pacchetti inizialmente installati sono il minimo indispensabile, in modo da ridurre lo spazio occupato dando spazio alle eventuali rimasterizzazioni, synaptic svolge bene il suo dovere. Il file di persistenza và, ahime, creato manualmente tramite pochi comandi da terminale e può risiedere in qualsiasi partizione. Purtroppo un enorme bug fa si che la persistenza possa essere usata solo sul computer su cui è stata usata per la prima volta ( salva fstab e non lo rigenera ai prossimi avvii trovandolo già nel file di persistenza ), se non fosse per questo non avrei esiterei a definirla “la migliore”, veramente un peccato :(Voto 7

• MCNLive Secondo me la migliore distro live al momento. Ha degli ottimi wizard per creare la persistenza ( purtroppo solo su partizioni ext3 ) e per essere installata su pendrive. Come PclinuxOs è basata su mandriva da cui eredita il control center, ma rispetto a PclinuxOs manca di alcuni wizard come quello di installazione dei driver video.E' basata sull'ormai datata Mandriva 2007, non resta che aspettare una versione aggiornata
  Tutto, (a parte apache per un problema di link simbolici ) funziona meravigliosamente bene :)

And for those who tried it, here is a quick way to remaster Knoppix:

Ejecutamos Partimage, arrancando con un Live CD como Knoppix

Seleccionamos la partición que queremos restaurar, en el caso de que tengamos mas de una además de swap

Con el tabulador pasamos a escribir la ruta completa al fichero que creamos al hacer la copia

Es importante escribir el nombre del fichero completo, incluida la extensión .000 del primer fichero de la copia, los siguientes los va utilizando de forma automática.

De nuevo con el tabulador vamos hasta Restaurar partición desde un fichero imagen, y pulsamos la tecla espaciadora para marcarlo.

Al pulsar F5 pasamos a la siguiente ventana

La partición que se va a restaurar debe estar desmontada, de otro modo nos saldrá el siguiente error

En la siguiente pantalla pulsamos de nuevo F5

y nos sale la pantalla de información, previa al comienzo de la restauración

Al pulsar Intro comienza.

Una partición con 10 Gb de datos puede tardar unos 20 minutus y ya tenemos nuestro sistema de nuevo listo.
