Chi ha seguito la guida installare kde 4.1 su debian testing, partendo da kde 3, si e' ritrovato con il solo kde 4.1 installato sul sistema. La guida, come preciso nelle prime note di questa, si comporta come un aggiornamento per i sistemi provvisti di kde 3 (upgrade a kde 4.1) mentre gnome e kde 4.1 convivono felicemente sullo stesso sistema.

Per dare un'informazione del tutto completa devo dire che anche kde 3 e kde 4.1 possono convivere sullo stesso sistema, ma questo solo tramite la compilazione di kde 4.1; personalmente preferisco evitare la compilazione, soprattutto quando come alternativa e' possibile l'installazione tramite apt.

Detto questo, seguono i passi da effettuare per rimuovere kde 4.1 dal proprio sistema; sono la traduzione ( quasi ) diretta del sito di riferimento del backport di kde 4.1 su Lenny. Chi ha installato kde 4.1 da kde 3 segua i tutti i punti, chi da gnome fino al punto 4.

1 Rimuovere da /etc/apt/sources.list la riga:

deb http://kde4.debian.net/ lenny main

2 Rimuovere tutti i pacchetti di base con il comando:

aptitude remove kdelibs5 kdelibs5-data kdepimlibs5 kdepimlibs-data kdebase-data kdebase-bin kdebase-runtime kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 kdebase-runtime-data kdebase-runtime-data-common kdebase-workspace kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 libphonon4

3 Si possono vedere i rimanenti pacchetti di kde 4.1 nel sistema con:

dpkg -l | grep 4:4.1


4 Se il punto 3 ha restituito dei pacchetti, rimuoverli con:

apt-get --purge remove nomepacchetto

5 Installare i pacchetti indispensabili di kde 3:

aptitude install kdelibs kdebase kdm


6 Riavviare il sistema: kdm dovrebbe accogliervi al login (se e' impostato l'accesso automatico, si dovrebbe aprire il desktop di kde3)

7 Installare i pacchetti che eravate soliti usare con kde 3 con il comando:

aptitude install nomemetapacchetto


potete installare un intero metapacchetto. Lista dei metapacchetti:

kdeaccessibility kdeaddons kdeadmin kdeartwork kdeedu kdegames kdegraphics kdemultimedia kdenetwork kdepim kdetoys kdeutils kdewebdev

Sure, it took a lot longer than Ubuntu to install (compile ;) ) everything on gentoo, yet I must say it was worth the wait. It is so easy to configure everything, just because there are no defaults, or let us say, no sane defaults. I have a resolution of 1280 X 1024 in my terminal, the font rendering is extremely smooth and is easily configurable. And yes, the system is more far more responsive and I have a pure KDE-4 system, there is no kdelibs-3* and qt-3* installed.

And in general, portage and all the gentoo associated tools feel better, maybe because I have become more accustomed to them. And final point, I do not have to install g++, it is already installed. The toolchain is already there to compile anything that I want.

Si aun no entiendes lo que es un plasmoide puedes ver la siguiente imagen y una barra abajo y dos ventanas trasparentes. Eso es lo que llamo el efecto Plasmoide.

...y para que quiero un plasmoide?...

- Puedes darle el uso que quieras como en esta imagen:

Paso #1:

Ejecuta Gimp y abre un nuevo proyecto el cual puedes escojer la resolucion que quieras pero para este tutorial usare una resolucion de 600x235. Lo mas importante es clickear en "Opciones Avanzadas" y donde dice "Rellenar con" debes de escojer "Trasparencia", asi el plasmoide podra tener el efecto trasparente.

Paso #2:

Has un click derecho sobre el proyecto y ve a Filtros / luces y sombras / efecto Xach.

Una nueva ventana abrira. Para que tenga ese look oscuro como los plasmoides de KDE 4.1 selecciona en "Color de Brillo" el color negro y en "Color de la Sombra Base" color negro, no toques nada mas. Ahora click en Aceptar.

Veras que el proyecto se vuelve oscuro. Ya tenemos la ventana plasmoide. Lo que nos falta es crearle el borde tipo cristal para darle ese look de elegancia.

Paso #3:

Este paso tiene su truco, pues consiste en seleccionar la herramienta "mover" para poder mover la capa oscura sobre el proyecto. La herramienta es la que tiene un icono azul con 4 flechas (arriba, abajo, izquierda y derecha). Ahora mueve la capa a donde quiera. Notaras que al mover la capa y sobrepasar los bordes del proyecto, la capa negra se cortara sola. Ese es el truco, osea, de esta manera consigue el tamaño que deseas siempre dejando algo de espacio sobre los cuatro bordes. Al terminar de mover alrededor mi capa, decidi optar por este tamaño:

Luego selecciona la herramienta "Herramienta de seleccion de rectangulos" y selecciona alrededor de la capa negra dejando un cuadrante de por medio. Un cuadrante es el un cuadrito del fondo. En mi caso se vera asi:

Ahora para picar lo previamente seleccionado, haz un click derecho sobre la capa seleccionada y selecciona Imagen / Recortar a la seleccion. En mi caso se ve asi, luego de recortar la imagen seleccionada.

Paso #4:

Ahora agregaremos el borde blanco luminoso. Has un click derecho sobre el proyecto y selecciona Filtros / luces y sombras / sombra arrojada. Una nueva ventana abrira.

Para el mejor efecto del borde has los siguientes cambios:

Desplazamiento en X: 0
Desplazamiento en Y: 0
Color: Blanco
Opacidad: 80

Luego clickea en Aceptar.

Paso #5:

Ya tienes el plasmoide creado. salvalo / guradalo como .png y no en .jpg porque sino la trasparencia se le va. Solo resta cojer uno de tus Wallpapers desde GIMP y arrastras el plasmoide en el wallpaper y guardarlo. Listo!

Ahora podras crear los plasmoides como quieras. Puedes crearlos con bordes luminosos de otro color o fondo trasparente de otro color y sobre todo de cualquier resolucion! Practica y perfecciona la tecnica, saludos.

Va bene, non mi dilungherò più di tanto, sicuramente saranno argomenti di vostro dominio ma questo blog è principalmente un vademecum quindi è doveroso pubblicare esperienze personali. La procedura è estremamente semplice.
Scarichiamo i vari files in una cartella e nominiamola a nostro piacimento es: Video. Ora da terminale entriamo nella cartella attraverso il comando cd ~/Video (se naturalmente si trova nella vostra Home), dopodichè procediamo con il comando cat nome_dei_files > nome_file_finale, faccio un esempio per essere più comprensibile: cat video.001.avi video.002.avi video.003.avi > L_Change_The_World.avi
Facile no?! Ah, ecco, il processo può risultare più o meno lungo (niente di allarmante) dipende dalla grandezza dei files, se proprio avete esigenza di verificare come procede il lavoro di unione dei files basta entrare nella cartella Video ed evidenziare il file appena creato, noterete sulla barra di stato il suo progressivo espandersi in questo modo se il file è di 700MB vi farete un'idea di quanto manca al termine. :-)

1. Prasanna made this point on hig blog and I agree with him. The windows look sad, in particular the toolbar and especially the titlebar. This is a huge disappointment in comparision to the desktop which looks great.
2. I like the idea about making the desktop widgetized. The default widgets that are available to the user are limited in number. But thats okay. Nothing much to complain here too. But, somehow, the whole idea of being able to change the wallpaper when th widgets are locked, seemed pointless. Logically, I would have arranged the widgets in such a manner that they go with my wallpaper. So I would like to lock the wallpaper too when I the lock all the widgets. This is not a bug really. But this is some sort of an enhancement.
3. Now comes the real dirt. I tried playing some audio files using Amarok and I discovered that the audio gets muted after every 30 seconds?!! WTF! I tried looking at the audio configuration and it seemed to be fine. I checked this on GNOME (using Amarok again) and playback was fine here. I checked this out in some forums and people did actually complain about this problem albeit in different ways.  Some guys had problem muting the sound. Some had the sound muted the whole time. These guys had tried installing KDE on Hardy Heron. After some serious checking and experimentation, I was able to get the playback working on KDE again! But as far as the whole experience is concerned, this is really a show stopper!
4. I don't like the application launcher that KDE offers. Actually cant blame anyone here. After using Launchy, every other application launcher looks stupid !
5. Dolphin, KDE's file manager, can be pretty irritating at times.
6. Moving the widgets on the main panel can be a pain.

I am sure that I have faced more issues than the ones that I have mentioned. Overall, KDE is not for me. I will still be using it for a while before I move over to GNOME. GNOME might look sad, but it is a lot more stable right now and that is more important at the end of the day, as compared to a flashy looking desktop with bugs.

Update: Just discovered that Synaptic Package Manager also crashes with KDE. After installing your packages, if any, the details window is expanded even though you did not ask for it. The remedy is simple: Just kill the process 'synaptic' using its process id (you have to use sudo as this can be done only as a super-user). Cheers!

Encore une avancée vers la version finale fin octobre ! A noter il est désormais possible de faire tourner Virtualbox. Il reste des bugs d'affichage et la gestion des claviers multimédia. Quelques problèmes de montage de disque Windows au boot.

OpenOffice 3 a des polices de menus bien proportionnées par rapport à la version de la Bêta 2.

En tout cas au global beaucoup de stabilité et une utilisation bientôt opérationnelle.

Prasanna's post on KDE 4.1 motivated me to try out the installation on my system.I was kinda bored with the GNOME desktop experience that Hardy Heron was offering. To be honest, initially I was not really sure if I could get KDE 4 running on Hardy Heron. Especially because the site clearly mentions that the platform is unstable for debian based systems(link). But this link on softpedia was just what I was looking for.

I will write a more detailed review on this after I have played around enough with this KDE release.

For now though, the desktop looks kewl! :)

Depuis une semaine Mandriva 2009 KDE 4.1 est sur mon poste.Globalement la version est d'une étonnante stabilité, et les disfonctionnements sont assez peu nombreux.

A noter :

- Une interface graphique léchée et mieux intégrée par Mandriva avec beaucoup de progrès sur la barre des tâches (peu paramétrable en 4.0).

- Des plasmoïdes riches fonctionnellement et utiles.

- La suppression des paquets RPM inutiles et obsolètes : un vrai gain de place.

- Ma carte wifi Ralink utilisait le driver rt73usb, ce qui bridait à 150 ko/s mon débit. Je suis repassé à un débit cohérent de 900 ko/s (je suppose que c'est grâce au nouveau kernel).

- Des effets Kwin agréables, mais pas aussi bien que Compiz. Ce dernier est parfaitement compatible dans mon cas, seul la décoration des Windows n'est pas paramétrable.

- Quelques bugs d'affichage sur les fenêtres, et sur les icônes.

- Pas de paquet pour Virtualbox sur le niveau de Kernel de la Bêta.

- Les drivers Nvidia ne sont pas au dernier niveau de version pour la Bêta.

- Mauvaise prise en charge des touches multimédia du clavier (régression par rapport à 2008.1).

Globalement le niveau de la distribution que se soit en terme de polish du graphisme, d'intégration de KDE 4.1, de fonctionnalité (centre de contrôle, snapshot, backup), de stabilité, est nettement supérieur à Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 pour un planning à peu près identique. Quel est l'effet de mode qui met cette distribution en avant. Ce succès est-il simplement du à l'activité (certes dense) des forums ?

Lo avevo compilato già quando era ancora allo stadio embrionale, ma stavolta ho voluto provare a fare una cosa da vero, grandissimo niubbo. E non è andata bene.

Ho seguito le istruzioni di installazione dal sito ufficiale di Kubuntu, e tutto è andato benissimo: come sempre Synaptic si comporta bene.Addirittura, non ho voluto aprire la sources list dal terminale, ma fare tutto dal programma. Risultato? Semplice e funzionale. Credo che, se sviluppato ancora meglio, Synaptic sia veramente una killer application di Ubuntu. Comunque, dopo aver installato i 500 mega e più di file, mi chiede solamente se come schermata di login voglio gdm o kdm. Scelgo gdm, faccio il logout, e entro in KDE 4.1.

E qui, un disastro. La lingua è in inglese, non che per me sia un problema, ma non sono riuscito a metterla in italiano dalle configurazioni di sistema. Mi si apre la avant window navigator, e si va a posizionare sotto la barra di kde. Il tema predefinito delle finestre è quello che ho scelto con emerald. E dopo aver trafficato un pò non sono riuscito a mettere oxygen. E le applicazioni? Oddio, altro che qt, altro che gtk, si vedono come in windows 98! Sono rimasto esterrefatto, ho provato a installare diversi pacchetti, ma nulla da fare. Rimaneva quella bruttissima visualizzazione, niente integrazione in qt.

I plasmoidi erano le uniche cose che funzionavano bene. Ma per una persona come me che vuole il desktop pulito, con pochissime icone, sono veramente inutili.

Totale: ragazzi, ma ci svegliamo??Una delle cose stupende di linux è che di possono avere più desktop enviorement. Ma se rendete le cose cosi fastidiose,non è fattibile. Sarebbe troppo bello poter mostrare sia gnome che KDE senza aver interferenze nell'uno e nell'altro. Dovreste rendere separate le due installazioni, e far decidere all'utente se mostrare oppure no i programmi di gnome in KDE, e viceversa. Se no ci troviamo con il risultato di esser limitati nelle nostre scelte, e dover optare per uno o per l'altro sistema. Il che non mi attira tantissimo.

Comunque, so benissimo che i problemi che ho riscontrato erano risolvibili. Ma, come ho scritto in precedenza, volevo fare un'installazione da "niubbo"....

p.s: continuo a preferire gnome, molto più pulito, elegante e semplice. E diverso.

Azt is megjegyezném, hogy a 4.1 már sokkal stabilabb, alig-alig láttam hibaüzenetet vagy programleállást az elmúlt 1 hét alatt (kb. 3-at). Úgy néz ki, a KDE 4.1 valóban már eléggé kiforr ahhoz, hogy stabilnak nevezhessük és minden Linux disztribúcióban leváltsa hamarosan a 3-as verziót -- persze ehhez szükség lesz arra is, hogy a programozók portolják végre az összes fontos szoftvert KDE 4-re is...

Ja igen! Sajna a Rendszerbeállításokon belül a KDM ablakban még mindig minden opció le van tiltva nekem, mintha azokhoz a beállításokhoz rootként kellene operálni. Viszont sehol sincs a súgó által hivatkozott gomb az ablakban, amivel át lehetne váltani rendszergazdai módra. Hmmmm...

La opción para descargar e instalar widgets (plasmoides) esta implementada en kde 4.1, pero aun no funciona debido a la programación de los widgets

Ahora si a lo que vinimos :) primero vamos a ir a las preferencias del sistema de kde 4.1   y seleccionamos la opción aspecto

Acá podemos seleccionar en las subcategorias colores , iconos, ventana anunciadora(splash escreen), emoticonos la opción obtener temas nuevos marcada con una estrella

Se abrirá una ventana en donde se descargara desde la pagina de kde-look lo que corresponda ya sea un esquema de color un tema para el escritorio un splash screen o un conjunto de emoticonos. simplemente le damos instalar al que mas nos guste y voila ¡¡¡ se descarga e instala quedando a nuestra completa  dispocicion

personalizar el tema de plasma y el wallpaper

vamos al escritorio, click derecho y seleccionamos preferencias del escritorio

hay podemos seleccionar entre tema nuevo y nuevo fondo. Aparecerá la misma ventana que antes donde seleccionaremos lo que mas nos guste y procederemos a instalarlo

con estos pasos ya podremos personalizar practicamente todo nuestro escritorio en base a lo que nos regala kde-look.

si al instalar alguna cosa no nos aparece no es culpa de kde 4.1 sino que es alguna falla en el script de instalación del paquete por lo que nos tocaría descargarlo desde la pagina e instalarlo manualmente :)

It's from the OpenSuse 11 site so I don't know if it works for other distribution (I didn't take time to learn about it :p ) Anyways, if it works for other distros  than OpenSuse please let me know :) . Other than that, the change from the last official version for the end users are great. The hole experience is great. Now the plasma engine works smoothly . Strange thing I've noticed a huge leap in the 3D performance, I'm using the ATI propriatary driver by the way and it works fine. The compositing effects that comes with KDE4 have also seen their performace increased ( Is it related to the fact that all the 3D acceleration has been more effective ?). By the way if you want to install new widgets it's been made a lot more easy.You just have to click install new Widgets and that's it.I don't know why but after the install the new widgets don't come up in the list, quiet sad. Anyways the installation of new features has been made easy for the hole Desktop , like the splach screen, the icons the emoticons the colors, and surely I forgot some.

By the way I noticed the nepomuck wich comes with strigi, you can find it in the system setting in the advanced tab.

This features allow tagging and rating files as well as semantically searching files. Quiet a nice feature :)

Jedni się kłócą, że Linux jest wymagający, inni że Vista jest dobra, jeszcze inni, że Linuks jest dla profesjonalistów, inni są zapatrzeni w efektownośc nowego KDE 4.1. I przyznam się bez bicia, że sam chyba się na to efektowne KDE przerzucę - dlaczego? Bo jestem wzrokowcem i uwielbiam te fajerwerki na pulpicie.

Zaraz mi ktoś powie, że "do Visty, chłopcze" - a ja powiem - z chęcią, jak mi ufundujesz najnowszy sprzęt i rzecz jasna legalny system. Linuksa (Ubuntu) używam bo po pierwsze jest darmowy, a po drugie bo jest znacznie (znacznie!) szybszy. A skoro jedynym komercyjnym oprogramowaniem którego używam jest Adobe Photoshop który na Ubuntu się dobrze sprawuje, to nie widzę powodu, by zostawac na ciągle sypiącym się Windowsie.

A skoro jeszcze całośc może ładnie wyglądac, to dlaczego by nie? Czy efektowny wygląd jest zarezerwowany tylko dla maniaków Windowsa, a użytkownicy Linuksa mają prawny obowiązek tkwic w brzydkim czarno-białym środowisku tekstowym? Eee, no dobra - przesadziłem, bowiem jakby nie było kolory są - jeśli rozumiecie, o co mi chodzi, heh.

Tak czy inaczej - dlaczego to niby to KDE 4.1 ma byc pogromcą Visty? Bowiem ładniej wygląda - geeki i tak bedą uzywac swoich konsol, zwylli użytkownicy zadowolą się ładnym (przy odrobinie wysiłku) Gnome. KDE 4.1 jest nastawione na "nawracanie" fanów Windowsa na coś znacznie ładniejszego - a do tego sprawniejszego, niż zwykłe Okienka.

Jak coś jest darmowe to jest super, a jak do tego jeszcze fajnie wygląda i super działa, to dlaczego by nie? Zostawmy więc geekom ich konsole (terminale czy jak to nazwac), użytkownikom zwykły system, a wzrokowcom nowe KDE 4.1 - każdy będzie zadowolony, bo przecież Linuks to Linux - nie chodzi o fajerwerki, ale o ideę darmowości, prawda? No chyba, że jest coś, co przeoczyłem ;).

Il rilascio 4.1 è sicuramente segnato dalla maturazione di Plasma e dal ritorno della suite KDE-PIM: KMail (client mail), KOrganizer (gestore di attività), Akregator (lettore feed RSS) sono ora totalmente integrati in KDE 4 e l’intero desktop sembra maturare nella direzione giusta, tant’è che gli sviluppatori si sentono di consigliarne l’utilizzo anche agli utenti meno esigenti.

There was one problem at first booting up OpenSUSE on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1420n), it detected the wrong screen size, but that was perfectly fine since I'm blind anyway, it detected 800x600, but a quick looking for a config tool found out how to change the resolution, got it to 1280x800 which is more suitable for most everyone else. One other problem, it did not auto detect my internet, but after setting up a eth0 connection it worked.

The rest was a pretty good experience, I found most everything worked right, and was pretty. I liked the Oxygen style, but I changed the default Oxygen colors away from default to darker colors (Obsidian Coast) which suit my eyes better. I also liked the New? Oxygen icon set, or at least they're new to me, last timed I really used KDE was KDE 3.5. I'd have to admit OpenSUSE did a awesome job on the appearance and stability. One thing that gets under my skin though... WIDGETS! I just cannot use widgets on the desktop, they have no meaning, even though I don't like them I was playing with them a little bit. I deleted the panel and found out that I can do everything without a panel mostly by adding the usual widgets from the panel to the desktop. It was just useless fun though. One thing that is odd is the desktop/folder widget that displays folders in certain areas with the ability to change the size of these areas pretty easily. This widget has a use to me, I can access folders pretty fast, these folder widgets are more of a preview that launches Dolphin.

Which brings me to Dolphin, now last time I used Dolphin, it was a long time ago, but it looks like Dolphin has came a long way from where it was. I now prefer dolphin over Konqueror, only problem I had was trying to figure out how to enlarge my icons.

Remember though this is only a alpha which does make me a little sad, I kinda wanna install it on my laptop and play with it for a month or so, I'd rather wait until the official release with all of the software repositories in it. Which I've heard good things about Yast in the next release, before I didn't really like it, I heard smart? was faster. I'm not big on OpenSUSE, or KDE, but I'm going to keep an eye out for this release. I'm not expecting much from the package manager though, we'll have to wait and see. I have to say there is no, zip, zoda, comparison compared to Kubuntu, and OpenSUSE, its not eve there.. A few weeks ago I tried the kubuntu-desktop meta package and the kde4 packages on my laptop with Ubuntu 8.04.1, and it wasn't that good to say the least. I got compiz going on it, and I have to say, there is a big difference between compiz on Gnome and KDE, I prefer Gnome and compiz of course. If I ever did decide to switch, to KDE on my laptop with OpenSUSE I would definitely use compiz though, I have to have the viewpoint mouse switcher plugin.
