Effing creepy! But absolutely amazing at the same time! Joshua Hoffine's "Horror Photography" is a bit like rubbernecking - you don't want to look because the scene is obviously not a pretty one, but you can seem to not look either. This guy is definitely a master of his craft though, using his friends as the actors (who work for free because it's "fun"), stages his sets like movies and uses all special effects make-up. A genius of a very unique kind, that's for sure.

O primeiro resultado desse trabalho é a série "After dark, my sweet", que aborda o imaginário infantil dos contos de fada e usa o horror para explorar e provocar sensações.

Segundo ele mesmo, as fotos são feitas sem uso de photoshop (salvo ajustes de cor e contraste para impressão), os modelos são amigos e família e todos fazem isso por diversão.

Já trabalhando na segunda parte da série e com outros projetos dessa linha no papel, o artista deve ganhar fãs tanto no universo do horror, recriando medos comuns ao transformar sensações em imagens, quanto nos círculos dos admiradores da produção visual de qualquer tipo.

Kant em seu ensaio sobre o belo e o sublime considerava que, grosso modo, para se atingir o sublime era necessário a contemplação do belo, exemplificando com a sensação de beleza de se parar à beira de um penhasco, colocando a vida em risco, para conseguir a sublimação. De certa maneira, o trabalho do fotógrafo norte-americano de Kansas City, Joshua Hoffine, trabalha com sensação muito próxima, usando como ferramenta elementar o Horror. Não confuda com sensações baratas de terror, mas sim o Horror belo, universal, que angustia, força uma reflexão tanto estética quanto cultural.

Em sua primeira série de trabalhos autorais, "After dark, my sweet", Hoffine usa o Horror como um conto de fadas moderno, explora o medo infantil como forma de arte. O resultado é um misto de beleza e perturbação, em imagens de temas universais como o "monstro embaixo da cama" ou locais, como a dona de casa americana da década de 50 sendo atacada por monstros subterrâneos.

Sobre seu trabalho, sua maneira de encarar a fotografia, sobre planos futuros e essencialmente sobre o Horror, Joshua Hoffine conversou, via e-mail, com a revista Speculum. Confira abaixo a entrevista exclusiva.

Speculum: Seu trabalho ainda não é muito conhecido no Brasil. Você pode falar um pouco sobre sua carreira, sobre como ela começou, quando surgiu o interesse pela fotografia, se investe somente em trabalho autoral ou também faz algum outro tipo de fotografia, seja jornalística ou publicitária, e sobre quais são suas influências?
Joshua Hoffine: Comecei a fotografar logo depois de me graduar na faculdade. Meu principal interesse sempre foi fotografia de arte, mas já fiz vários outros tipos de trabalho. Trabalhei para o Hallmark Cards, que fica aqui na minha cidade natal, Kansas City. Depois disso, comecei um negócio de fotografia para documentos e casamentos. Fotografei mais de duzentos casamentos durante os quatro anos em que mantive o negócio. Atualmente, além do meu trabalho pessoal com o Horror, também fotografo para bandas e músicos.
Minhas duas maiores influências são Nick Vedros e Rich Grosko. Nick Vedros é o fotógrafo "comercial" mais famoso em Kansas City. Fui estagiário dele antes de ir pro Hallmark. Aprendi técnicas de iluminação com Nick, que é um gênio no assunto. Também tive a oportunidade de trabalhar em várias produções de fotos com Nick, que foi uma experiência única. Rich Grosko foi meu mais importante mentor. Ele foi fotojornalista e me ensinou como ganhar a vida como fotógrafo. Sempre me incentivou a seguir minhas idéias, não importa o quão grotescas elas possam ser. Sem o seu apoio, nunca seria o fotógrafo que sou hoje.

Obviamente, mandei um e-mail por figura e como resultado, conseguiu uma entrevistona bacana para Speculum, que vai ao ar amanhã. I wish I could remember where I found the link to photographer Joshua Hoffine's website but since I don't, I'll go ahead and take credit for discovering this artist myself. In fact, he's got me to thank for his entire career!

I'm a photography buff and a horror buff so kind of right up my alley.

Oddly, the creepiest picture in the bunch is one of the few without dead things / monsters. It's one with a gawd dang clown in it. And you can't even see the clown's face. But you know it's there. You always know they're there. It's a bit cliche to talk about clownphobia but I did once get smacked in the face with a rubber fish at a Ringling Brothers show, so I think I've got good reason to be weary around these weirdos.

*So much so that I majored in it in college but never finished. That says more about my commitment than to my love of the art. Passionate, but lazy. That's me!

Some time ago, doing a reading for a dear friend of mine she pulled the Death card. I still remember her shrieking "Oh no, why, what is going to happen now ? This is bad, why does this card show up ?What doesn it mean ? Is someone going to die ? Those people on the ground are dead, they are chopped into bits, oh my, oh my ! Don't lie to me, don't pretend it can be any good, this is bad I know, tell me , tell me !!! " As I tried to calm her down, and that wasn't easy, I still remember my own feeling when I did a reading for myself, (the first one actually) and I flipped the card that represented me at that time : the Hanged Man. Even though my reaction to the card was less emotional that hers, I wasn't too happy with it. At that time, it as my least favorite card of the Major Arcana. And I was totally amazed at the fact that it was supposed to represent me ! I didn't like it and I surely wasn't feeling connected to it. I was using the Tarot de Marseille at that time and only using the Major Arcana, now I use the RWS and use the whole deck.I see the Hanged man under a different light now, and my least favorite card changes every now and then. At the time being, I have to say the Emperor is not my favorite. But in order to avoid that kind of emotional upheaval when I do a reading, I ask the person to pull the cards for the layout while concentrating and I only flip them afterwards. That way, the person may concentrate on the question and not let his/her fears and dislikes of some cards get in the way.

Here is a website I found on nightmares, it's not related to tarot but I found it very "beautiful" in its own way. The graphic work is by Joshua Hoffine and while not related to tarot, It reminded me of her reaction with the death card. I like the question his masterpieces are raising such as "What is real ? Is it really there or is it just my imagination ? Am I being paranoid or is there something there ?"
I'll have to come up with posts about these cards, and my own take on them.

Y después tenemos a gente como Joshua Hoffine, que por las fotografías que realiza, tendremos que suponer que su inspiración la saca de algún tipo de trauma infantil.

Porque a mí que no me digan, pero que la mente de una persona sea capaz de realizar estas composiciones...

• "Candy". Señora sonriente frente a niña que no acaba de comprender porqué pone a secar piruletas en la ventana.

• "Bed". O porqué no hay que alimentar a Toby con pienso caducado.

• "Balloons". Otra muestra más de que los payasos son seres malvados y horribles, que deberían desaparecer del planeta. No me gustan los payasos.

• "Refrigerator". Según qué decisiones, se tienen que tomar con la cabeza fría.

• "Death". Después de tanta foto... comoquierasllamarlas, hasta me hace gracia ver a la muerte haciendo equilibrismos.
