It can be difficult to come up with a steady stream of blog post topics, but there is nothing like a week of great experiences (and a week off from work and blogging) to renew your creativity and inspire a number of new ideas. I could probably come up with about a dozen posts or more just based on trip to Texas - we spent three days taking in the sights and sounds at the Austin City Limits music festival and another three days exploring Austin and the Texas Hill Country - but I think 2 or 3 posts might do the trick :-)

The festival was great - it reminded me of our last "festival" experience (Woodstock '99) except much much better. The ACL festival was extremely well organized. They had free water and, most of the time, there was no line at all at the water stations. They also set up mister stations to keep you cool in the 90+ degree weather. There were plenty of porta-potties too, which were usually stocked with toilet paper (a wonderful thing for the ladies). Not to mention, the music was awesome - a few highlights for us were Joe Bonamassa, Beck, David Byrne, Shooter Jennings, and Jamie Lidell, among others.

The only negative was the dust - after thousands and thousands of people trampled over the already dry grass in Zilker Park, by the last day, we had to walk around with bandannas and medical masks over our faces so as not to breathe in all of the dirt flying around. It was pretty gross.

Many of the experienced ACL-goers (the festival has been held for the past 7 years) brought tall sticks with a little bit of everything hanging off the top to mark their territory and make it easy for friends to spot them in a crowd. We saw Texas and American flags, witch hats on the end of sticks, Spongebob balloons, bungee jumping baby dolls, t-shirt flags, and a number of other crazy markers. I often found myself with an eye to the sky to check out these cool creations.

Besides the music, the ACL attendees alone were a source of entertainment. I've always been a fan of people-watching and this festival attracted a mix of characters. There were parents with kids, young teenagers, old hippies, and rocker-dudes covered from head to toe (seriously, there were tons of people in jeans and long sleeve shirts, which baffled me given that I was sweating my butt off in shorts and a tank top). There were lots and lots of cowboy hats and I caught myself thinking to myself multiple times that Dan and I might just be the only ones without tattoos!

One night as we were leaving the park, we even saw a couple of old guys with a mega-phone preaching to the exiting crowds about our need to be "saved." Just as these god-loving fellahs were about to hoist up a big sign, one determined young lady battled the old men in protest. The crowds gathered to cheer her on as she wrestled the sign to the ground. It was crazy.

In addition to the music, people, flags, and dust, there were, I'm guessing, over 20 food stands from local businesses (including Stubb's BBQ). None of the food was that great - I didn't have high expectations given that the food was sitting outside on a hot day and not cooked-to-order - but it did the job. Then, of course, there was beer and plenty of Texas Tea. But, after the first day, water became my beverage of choice. It was a key to our survival - and survive we did!

Stay tuned...I also plan to post about our adventures outside of Austin!

A few weeks ago I picked up the newest from King Khan, this time backed by The Shrines. While my favorite record of his to date is his more garagey "duet" with BBQ Show, this latest effort, The Supreme Genius of King Khan & The Shrines, is a spectacular diversion that features a backing horn section and organ. Several songs from King Khan's 2007 import release as well as even older tunes are given new treatment here, including my current personal anthem, "Welfare Bread." It's a cool idea for the Indian-French-Canadian singer to just re-record the songs instead of re-releasing them straight up for this domestic "greatest hits" offering on Vice. Fans of the Dap-Kings take note; this sound is equally legit.

King Khan & The Shrines — "Welfare Bread"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/King%20Khan%20-%20Welfare%20Bread.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

The new Jamie Lidell record, Jim, is a blast. This one's definitely going on PIANOS!.

Jamie Lidell — "Where D'You Go?"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/Jamie%20Lidell%20-%20Where%20D-You%20Go.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

Bonnie "Prince" Billy's new album is his most accessible cross-over attempt in a long while. It's also quite enjoyable, and comes packaged in a Periwinkle blue jewel case. Here's his duet with Ashley Webber (of The Organ).

Bonnie "Prince" Billy — "You Want That Picture"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/Bonnie%20Billy%20-%20You%20Want%20That%20Picture.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

On the hole I don't enjoy Destroyer's new album, Trouble in Dreams, more than his previous release, Destroyer's Rubies. But this particular song is just fucking awesome. It begins with a classic Yo La Tengo-styled vamp before building to an amazing atmospheric bridge. What a great tune.

Destroyer — "My Favourite Year"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/Destroyer%20-%20My%20Favourite%20Year.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

I've only listened to the new Brightblack Morning Light album a couple times, and so far it hasn't grabbed hold of me quite in the same way their Matador debut of two year's ago did. But this song encapsulates their hippie-psych-soul sound to a T. The dreamy piano and organ melding together with sax and high hat. And the dual vocals of Nathan Shineywater and Rachael Hughes backed by accompanying singers. Delicious.

Brightblack Morning Light — "Oppressions Each"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/Brightblack%20Morning%20Light%20-%20Oppressions%20Each.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

The new No Age record, Nouns, is more song-oriented and generally less caustic than their debut. It's also considerably rooted in the '90s, to my ears at least. While their noisy debut had hints of pre-Slanted and Enchanted Pavement, this record reminds me much more of British band Boyracer. This song, however, is total My Bloody Valentine bombast, and I love it.

No Age — "Sleeper Hold"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/No%20Age%20-%20Sleeper%20Hold.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

TV on the Radio's new record is so good and so approachable, which surprised me. For example, I found myself taken aback by the funk guitar on this track. So. So. Good.

TV on the Radio — "Crying"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/TV%20on%20the%20Radio%20-%20Crying.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

I leave you with a couple forthcoming releases due to drop a week from today. I doubt I'll buy Megapuss' debut on Vapor (Neil Young's label). The duo of Devendra Banhart and Greg Rogove have provided some comic relief with their live performances, and the two songs I've heard from Surfing are enjoyable enough, but hardly necessary.

Megapuss — "A Gun On His Hip and a Rose On His Chest"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/Megapuss-A%20Gun%20On%20His%20Hip%20and%20a%20Rose%20On%20His%20Chest.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

Like Devendra, Antony and the Johnsons is an artist that doesn't leave much room for gray area; you either love him or hate him. I loved his 2005 debut, such a strange and moving piece of music, for the Secretly Canadian label. His new record seems to be in line with his last, as the other song I've heard from it is an emotive piano ballad. This song, however, is a lot different. The first half is essentially acapella, before Antony is joined by drums and skronking sax. Interesting.

Antony and the Johnsons — "Shake That Devil"

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/25/2114682/Antony%20and%20the%20Johnsons%20-%20Shake%20That%20Devil.mp3|leftbg=0x357DCE|rightbg=0xF06A51|rightbghover=0xAF2910|righticon=0xF2F2F2|lefticon=0xF2F2F2|righticon=0xFFFFFF|text=0x357DCE|slider=0x357DCE|track=0xFFFFFF|border=0xFFFFFF|loader=0xAF2910|loop=no]

Bonus: On the off chance that you haven't heard Fleet Foxes yet, here you go. They remind me of My Morning Jacket, if Jim James were more into Fairport Convention.

So. What do Academy Award-nominated director Spike Lee and campy, morbidly obese comedian Bruce Vilanch have in common?

What about Cockney beatboxer Jamie Lidell and Congolese dictator Mobutu Sese Seko?

And can ANYBODY tell the difference between Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan?

I know, I know: What's that stuffy French atheist doing usurping Sarah Palin's sexy look? Well, a pair of rimless specs will widen your vision, and that can help you see through bull shit. But, unfortunately, it can also help you see Russia.

Lacan, pictured above trying to physically separate himself from his self, would have loved chatting about the manipulative rhetoric of the Republican party. And so would Palin, who isn't interested in inhabiting the realm of "the imaginary," but constructing it, as she does here in her interview with Katie Couric. And that takes talent. In fact, I'd say that Palin, despite her occasional forays into the world of debilitating, cross-eyed ignorance, is more self-aware — in that psychoanalytic sort of way — than she looks.

Language manifests desire. It's an expression of and reason for our most deviant, perverted obsessions. And Palin exploits that connection eerily well. Her circular repetition of folksy colloquialisms — "thanks but no thanks," she likes to say, and "you can't blink, Charlie" — and that rangy northern cluck of hers — "lupstuck" — have lulled rich, white America into a breathy, erotic slumber. And for no reason at all: Palin is talk and talk is Palin and the difference, if there is one, is way to complicated for me.

I think.

So, despite a penchant for shooting helpless animals from helicopters and banning books from the local library (especially this one), and despite relishing her total lack of knowledge about the rest of the world, "Sarah Palin" may just signify "genius."

And, then again, maybe not.

Platz 10: Richie Havens mit “Going Back To My Roots”. “I’m talkin’

Platz 10: Richie Havens mit "Going Back To My Roots". "I'm talkin' 'bout the roots in the man."
Platz 9: Piers Faccini mit "If I". "Fall down, kneel, cry, zell my heart, I won't deny. Fall down, kneel, cry, alright, testify!"
Platz 8: Hellogoodbye mit "Here In Your Arms". "Hello, I've missed you quite terribly."
Dito.
Platz 7: Nizlopi mit "Girls". "Old from the need, old from the love, old from the greed."
Siehe auch Ear Candy Report #22.
Platz 6: Robbie Williams mit "Mr. Bojangles". "And after 20 years he still grieves."
Wo zum Teufel ist Robbie Williams abgeblieben???
Platz 5: Jack Black und Will Ferrell mit "Get Off The Stage - Oscar Song". "Look at Catherine Zeta-Jones, she's snorring!"
Sehr amüsant. Immer wieder.
Platz 4: Rosemary Clooney mit "Keep It Gay". "Let it sing like a nightingale in May, keep it gay, keep it free or you'll frighten it away."
Platz 3: Tracy Chapman mit "The Promise". "I always hold a place for you in my heart."
Platz 2: Jamie Lidell mit "Little Bit Of Feel Good". "Your sweet alchemy turned trouble to gold."
Letztens auch geträumt von perlenbeketteten Einhörnern. Note to self: Alkohol ab sofort in Maßen.
Platz 1: The Kooks mit "Sway". "Be whoever you have to be, I won't judge you."
I fucking love this song!

Last night Alex bought tickets for us to see Jamie Lidell at The Parish Room on Sixth Street. The show was at 10pm so being the super planner that I am I made sure we were out of the apartment by 8:30 to drive down there, find a parking spot, and make our way to the club.

We were the second people in line behind Jamie's youngest fan in Austin and stood there for another hour and fifteen minutes. The doors opened around 10:30 and we discovered why people speak so highly of The Parish Room. It was a long rectangular room with a bar and seating area around the perimeter. We could tell while holding our spots in the very front that it was going to be a very intimate show...or at least for us since we were so close!

The opening band was Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears and we had no idea what we could expect from them. Austin 360 wrote about Joe Lewis being a very talented guitarist...but that's about all we knew.

They were busy with their sound check when we entered and once we heard them doing some "test runs" we knew we were in for a treat. Their show was just short of an hour long and was so outstanding!

Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears are an eight-piece outfit of twenty-something devotees of hard blues-funk. Fronted by young guitarist and soul shouter Joe Lewis, these talented newcomers on the Austin, Texas, music scene have unleashed one of the toughest, rawest funk EP's to come across this reviewers desk in many years.

One of the downsides of shows in my book is all the waiting around. Since it's also the weekend of ACL there are thousands of people in-town (not including the locals) to see live music! We noticed quite a few in the crowd last night with wristbands and dust smeared on their faces. The girl next to me was so tired from the first day of the three day festival that she was NAPPING on the floor and leaning against my leg...I do what I can!

About 45 minutes after the opening band left the stage Jamie Lidell and his crazy teamsters entered the stage with a jolt of energy and a wave of aromatic weed. No wonder these guys took so damn long to get on stage!

Now I fear that I won't do his performance justice with my amateur synopsis so I'll just leave it be by saying that it was so many amazing things. I had no idea this guy was so versatile and full of energy! Some of his standout songs of the evening were "Little Bit of Feel Good," "Another Day," and "Multiply" where we pretty much sang the song to him!

His music was intoxicatingly innovative, or maybe that was just the dynamic duo who danced, popped X, and rolled joints in front of us (take note to their drug induced hand movements in the below video:-)! Despite not having drank a drop all night I'm recovering from a Live Music Hangover having stood for 4 hours straight, damaging my eardrums, and getting into bed close to 3:30am. Gah, we're so OLD!!!

New galleries From July till two weeks ago:

BELOW: Jamie Lidell at Heathrow. I was busy upstairs shooting for client, so by the time the show started, I was lucky to have found my way close to the stage.

Below: First time I went to Black Sunday at Bella Rose. I was shooting for client, but here are some outtakes from that night. I had to be home by 1 am, early meeting the next day.

BELOW: The few shots I took at Spazio Negro or something like that - inside Segafredo on Brickell. This place is too small and there for too crowded to be so snobby. I was in and out in under 30 mins.

BELOW: At Poplife. A day I arrived too late to see anyone. I love the UK.

BELOW: This was on a the second Saturday of the month (August) and Art Walk was dead. I ran over to New Times Fashion event in Midtown to hang out and decided to take some shots. I love the way this picture turned out. A couple of weeks ago, I saw this on Plum TV and I realized that is what New Times did with my picture.

BELOW: Earthdance Miami at Soho Studios - Shooting for client. Best part for me were these African dancers and drums. I almost lost it and started to do kudoro dancing.

BELOW: Honor Roll Studios party with school girl cocktail chic's - I shot this for a client. Good party, good vibe, mixed downtown and uptown crowd. Obviously I shot my people but also some new faces that didn't understand I shoot in candid mode.

BELOW: Art. And I don't get it. But then again, some people don't like my 'art'. This is the Art Season opener. I was shooting for a client, but I was also catching some great art. The most packed I've seen the area since Art Basel.

If you noticed, I added a new page at the top of this blog. "Free Tracks." Pretty self-explanatory.

I'm gearing up to release my mixtape Bring Me the Head of Zilla Rocca on September 23 (pluggin'!). While this allows me to stress out and lose sleep until everything is a 'go, it doesn't change the fact that my archives are getting thick. We at Beat Garden are nowhere near the likes of Madlib or Kool Keith, but there's enough proper bangage in the hard drive that never made it to a centralized place (outside of the Media section on www.beatgardenentertainment.com)

As a compulsive task-driven Virgo who fiends for a uniformed, centralized home for all things, it makes sense that I have a place here at Clap Cowards for that "ol' robotic, futuristic, George Jetson" batch of crap which may or may not have seen the light of day on other sites throughout the year(s).

If you already have downloaded a bunch of these songs, THANK YOU!!! If not, here's a quick synopsis as to why the hell we recorded these songs in the first place:

1. Jamie Lidell "A Little Bit More (Zilla Rocca Remix)"-- The funkiest white boy this side of Ad Rock, Jamie's album Multiply felt like everything Justin Timberlake wished he could've done in the studio if he read blogs and liked Otis Redding. I decided to write one of the most misognynistic raps over this ill beatbox loop and tie it into Jamie's hook. Apologies to all girls named Michelle who work for minimum wage.

2. Nas "Hope (Zilla Rocca Remix)"--I remember calling out from work one day and spending my entire morning remixing this song from Nas' Hip Hop is Dead. I happened to be one of three winners over at SpineMagazine.com for this remix for a contest they ran late '06, a huge achievement for a nerd like me! The sample I used is from one of the biggest indie rock bands of all time--can you guess the band and song? This is one of the more stripped down beats I ever made, so when the Wild Style drum loop pops up, it's more memorable. Unless you've never seen Wild Style, in which case I umm...well...oooh...yeah. Check it out.

3. Amy Winehouse "Back to Black (Zilla Rocca remix)"--Everyone rapped over "Rehab," but this song is so beautiful, heartbreaking, and chilling, I couldn't believe people fell for the song about Amy's ongoing coke habit. I had the Winehouse record a few months before it dropped in the states and was blown away--sure, she ripped of fSharon Jones and the beehive girl groups of the 60s, but the songs are wonderfully written, the mix is rustic and nuanced, and the drums and horns got more swing than Ken Griffey. Amy's hook is simply painful and vivid, so I tried to make up a story about true love that is forced to die, hence the military love triangle theme. People picked up this song all over the internet at the height of Winehouse Mania--it's really weird.

4. D'Angelo "She's In My Hair (Zilla Rocca Remix)"--Brown Sugar was the first R&B album I ever loved (Don't Be Cruel and Boyz II Men's first tape are close second's). I listen to Voodoo at least once every other week at work. A couple months back, I read a harrowing piece on D'Angelo in SPIN about how he's devolved into an overly self-concious, drug addicted, overweight mess who was snakebitten by his sexpot image and the praise other people received for Voodoo (?uestlove, James Poyser, Dilla, etc). I found this live cover of Prince's "She's In My Hair" on a mix CD a DJ put together of D's work last year and had it floating around in my iPod. Last month while chilling with 2ew Gunner on the beach in Rhode Island being forced to stare at scantily clad 16 year olds, this song came on randomly. R&B sucks when D'Angelo isn't dropping albums.

5. Portishead "Machine Gune (Zilla Rocca Remix)"--Arguably the best thing to come out of the 90s after day glo scrunchies, Portishead dropped this smash mouth metallic single earlier this year. The choppy war drums were inspired by Marley Marl and BDP, so why not get your rhyme on? My remix popped up on some college radio playlist, which again was very weird. And I received my first piece of negative feedback from some random blogger who completely trashed my lyrics in favor of....Lil' Wayne. You be the judge.

6. Three Six Mafia "Stay Fly (Zilla Rocca Remix)"--I did this as a one off for some Canadian indie label's website 2 years ago. They posted the original sample and urged people to flip it anyway they wanted. Why not chop it up and make it the backdrop for a song that asks instructs you to "smoke all night, drink all day" because "that to me is the American way"?

7. Clean Guns "Neighborhood Watch Freestyle" (unreleased)--I think this was from the Yadibox sessions. Sometimes me and Nico just throw on a beat and empty out our rhyme books. This was one of those instances over an Alchemist instrumental. On second listen, we're lyrically dropping some deep shit for a throwaway mixtape song. Nico KILLS this jawn: "Pockets depressed with I.O.U's, and bookies and loan sharks like 'I know you'." That shit gives me the chills.

8. Zilla Rocca "One Crazy Night"--This is obviously the sample source for Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" taken from the soundtrack for "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" if I remember correctly. I used the technique of writing the first things that came to mind over this beat, so this whole thing was probably written and recorded start to finish in under a half hour. I'm really lazy.

9. Zilla Rocca "Throw the Water On Them Freestyle"--Jeff posted this beat when the Busta single first dropped earlier this summer and dared a rapper to get busy on it. Two months later, I answered the call. Truthfully, I could've killed this one a bit better and maybe added a hook to break up the 92 bars. Busta owns this one though--that line about staying fresher than dudes up in a Cressida is bananas!

(The Jon Spencer) Blues Explosion

The Roots

The Raconteurs

Of het nu I’m A Lady was, Say Aha of L.E.S.

And Justice For All was bijvoorbeeld één van die classics.

Hitjes Electric Feel en Time To Pretend.

Another Day (met band), Call Back Around (solo) of de absoluut grandioze afsluiter Multiply (a capella), alles was even magistraal en zette de hele zaak in rep en roer.

Jamie Lidell is blank?
