Who's the highest paid movie actor/actress this year?

To quote OMG:

In an era where risk-averse studio executives have declared men the more reliable movie stars-- and the more desirable moviegoers -- perhaps it's no surprise that they are also the medium's top earners. The reality: Hollywood's 10 best-paid actors out-earned Hollywood's 10 best-paid actresses 2-to-1 over the course of the year.

Highest paid? Will Smith, who supposedly racked up over $80 million this year. He made the top list of Forbes.

DATING TIP: Do you like to go to movies? Mention it on your profile. Music choice, and movie choice are great indications of how compatible two people are. List your favorite movie , whether it's "The Dark Knight," or "Indiana Jones 4" or Pacino in "Merchant of Venice," whatever it is, it tells a lot about you. So share your favorite movies and see what happens.

Marcelina fell in love with a guy she met online when he said his favorite movies were "City of Angels," "Somewhere in Time," and "The Notebook."

Joshue and Candee clicked when they both mentioned "opera" on their profiles.

From wikipedia, the term Jumping The Shark:
Jumping the shark is a colloquialism used by U.S. TV critics and fans to denote the point in a TV or movie series at which the characters or plot veer into a ridiculous, out-of-the-ordinary storyline. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak, since they have undergone too many changes to retain their original appeal, and after this point critical fans often sense a noticeable decline in the show's quality.
The term is an allusion to a scene in a 1977 episode of the TV series Happy Days when the popular character Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli literally jumps over a shark while water skiing. The scene was considered so preposterous that many believed it to be an attempt at reviving the declining ratings of the flagging show.

It seems like movie fans and critics have decided it's time to upgrade the aforementioned coin phrase to something a bit more modern, and they found their golden opportunity with the infamous scene from Indiana Jones 4 where Indy survives a nuke blast ...by hiding inside a fridge.

Taken from the http://www.nukingthefridge.com/ Website :
Nuking the Fridge is a colloquialism used by U.S. Cinema critics and fans and has a meaning similar to jumping the shark. It is used to denote the point in a movie or movie series at which the characters or plot veer into a ridiculous, out-of-the-ordinary storyline. Films that have "nuked the fridge" are typically deemed to have passed their peak, since they have undergone too many changes to retain their initial appeal, and after this point critical fans often sense a noticeable decline in their quality. It is considered as the movie equivalent of what Jumping the shark means for television.

The term is an allusion to a scene in the 2008 film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull of the Indiana Jones series, when the title character Indiana Jones is literally hit by a atomic bomb blast while hiding inside a refrigerator in a desperate attempt to escape a nuclear test facility. The fridge is hurled several miles through the sky, and tumbles hard to the ground. The scene was considered so preposterous that many believed it to be an attempt at outdoing the over-the-top action of the classic introduction sequence of the series.

Yep, it seems this new and "improved" coin phrase has gained a lot of popularity as it can be seen all over IMDB message boards in a variety of tv shows and movies, not to mention there's a nifty little reviews website called http://www.nukedthefridge.com/ where you can even order a fucking T-shirt, i shit you not:

Sad, but true. What say you?

* Read this abridged script of the 4th Jones movie -totally hilarious.

* The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, in the Northern Hemisphere falls on June 20. Should be a conspicuous time for exquisite rituals and paranormal stuff.

* The North Pole faces its first ice-free summer in its history. Thin ice around the North Pole readily melts in the summer heat; some perennial (thicker) ice around the Arctic Circle will still survive though.

* People have a normal tendency to feel sleepy by afternoon. The active-asleep rhythm (see illustration here) of our bodies are common in mammals, too. Besides, it is scientific fact that taking 26-minute naps can boost performance by as much as 50%.

I've seen a couple of summer movies so far- Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and now The Incredible Hulk. Iron man was good fun, and everyone seems to agree about that. But Hulk and Indy 4 have divided audiences, so I'm going to share my thoughts because I think one of them was a complete and total failure.

'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' has been in development hell since the early 1990s. Year after year, the trio of Ford, Spielberg and Lucas promised fans that another installment would come around once script and schedules were in sync. A handful of screenwriters- including M. Night Shyamalan and Frank Darabont- took a crack at updating (and likely ending) the successful screen mythology of Indiana Jones. Speaking of Darabont- Spielberg and Ford adored his script. It was Lucas who gave it the axe.

So what finally arrived in theaters? A sequel so unforgivable that it actually soiled the reputation of the other three films. 'Crystal Skull' was a lifeless mess. Unlike the other installments, 'Skull' had no sense of discovery, or charm, or well-placed humor. Even the cinematography was dull and muted- a total contrast from Douglas Slocombe's classic, richly colored work on the previous three films. As for the title character himself, Ford did a fine job, but the story didn't need him. Those Russians were headed for that "temple" with or without his help. And Jones was never in danger, or perhaps Spielberg managed to drain the tension so that you didn't care even if he was. As for Mutt swinging on vines with monkeys, slingshot trees and group trips over three impossible waterfalls, nothing else needs to be said about it. We all felt nauseous at the same time.

George Lucas has lost all grasp on the filmmaker he used to be. He has got to get away from his franchises, because his influence is killing them. I honestly believe he massaged this storyline until it provided sufficient employment for the staff of Industrial Light & Magic. The CG was so excessive and unnecessary that there can really be no other conclusion. Spielberg didn't fare much better. It would be a true archaeological feat to discover his visual storytelling prowess that was lost long ago.

My friend made a perfect comparison after the movie ended- he said it felt like a water ride at a theme park, where plot points are strung together almost randomly as you pass through. To me the whole thing worked like a stunt show, which is basically saying the same thing; ridiculous excuses to get the players into boring action sequences.

(article continues below photo)

'Crystal Skull' also had a very sanitary feel to it, as if the years have softened Spielberg and Lucas to the point where they won't agree to film a reckless, dangerous good guy. There was one singular moment- when Indy fired the blow dart back into that dude's throat- that actually felt whimsical and in character. The rest of the time, we were treated to old-age jokes that sound better coming from Danny Glover.

Unlike Indy 4, 'Hulk' knew exactly what the audience was there for: brawls and smashing stuff. It didn't linger or hesitate, and moved along at a steady pace, while the action (though clearly CG) was tough and entertaining. It also helped that the CG characters had a weight to them. Unlike Spiderman, who starts to move like Gumby the minute he takes to the sky- Hulk and Abomination interacted well with their environments and each other, so that you could actually believe what you were watching (to a certain extent of course). I wish the same could be said for what will hopefully be Indiana's final adventure.

The summer can still be redeemed. Bring on The Dark Knight, Pineapple Express and Werner Herzog's Encounters at the End of the World. Okay, I'm actually getting excited about Wanted, although Angelina Jolie's arms appear to be stolen from the Cloverfield monster. She needs to invest in a sandwich.

Question: why is Stallone the only person who understands his 80's franchises? I can't believe I'm saying this- but Rambo 4 and Rocky 6 completely dominated Die Hard 4 and Indiana Jones 4. Now we're got Brett Ratner directing Beverly Hills Cop 4, and I'm sure that will end up being disowned by us fans as well. Help!

Indiana Jones (4) is a movie that continues the legend of an archaeologist. who battles ancient artifacts, mummies, and more. If you seen Jackie Chan adventures(Animated TV Show) or any of the previous Indianna Jones movies you will want to see this.

The movie begins with the presumed army traveling to an army base. Little do we all know that the Communist solders murdered the troops and took weaponry and clothing. Indiana Jones and his assistant is left to get away from the Communist while helping them search for an important artifact.

The movie continues with surprises and action all over. Indiana Jones 4 is the only movie of the series I actually recalled watching and it got me hooked onto the series( actually searching for vhs and dvds of previous movies).

The movie is very funny in some key areas. The theaters roared with laughter. The attack and battle system was uncompared. The movie seemed as if it was an action rpg with great graphics.

The movie did have some downfalls as many movies do that have artifacts. There is always a know it all who makes wild connections. I did not appreciate that. Also many questions were left unanwered. The realistic feature of the movie was a tad off too.

The movie has stayed in its timezone. There was no time machines or portals in the movie, which was great. Also the weaponry was not high tech, but stuff you would see in the 1940s/1950s.

The movie was basically a must see for the family. If you have someone to see the movie with I suggest you see it. If you do not either rent it(eventually) or use it was your 2nd movie option.

Indianna Jones gets 3/5(6/10)

It has been known for quite some time that at some point, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg brought Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption", "The Green Mile") in to write a script for the fourth Indiana Jones movie. G4 has a review of that very same Darabont script. There was always a rumor that the script was great and it brought back pretty much every cool character from the Indy canon. This review pretty much confirms it. There was Henry Jones Sr., Sallah, Marion, but the biggest difference is the absence of Shia LeBouf's character, Mutt. Darabont also didn't make Marion a smiling goon and had her act more like she really did.

You can read my review of "Indiana Jones & The Crystal Skull" but my feelings have changed as I have had more time to think about it. The movie was a complete and total bummer. The more I think about Shia LeBouf's character swinging on those vines in the Amazon, the sicker I feel about the whole thing. How could Spielberg possibly have thought that was a good idea? It was completely ridiculous. I have pretty much convinced myself that the next time I see it, I will despise it.

Also nichts wie rein fur 11RM :D.

I'm no Indiana Jones fan but after seeing the latest installment of the famed fictitious archaeologist's adventure - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I won't be as enthused as before. For the hardcore Indi-fan, I presume the movie will be a kinda letdown and would invoke that dreaded could-have-been-better feeling but for most of the Indian audience, all the action, the adventure, the chivalry, the banter, the chases and of course, the puzzle-solving and cryptic-clue-cracking will be more than enough to spice up a lazy summer evening. And from that perspective, Crystal Skull would rank as an enjoyable and watchable action flick this summer.

19 years after his last crusade/adventure hit the screen, Professor Henry Jones a.k.a Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is back in a brand new adventure. Presented by George Lucas' Lucasfilm and helmed by Steven Speilberg (who were also involved in the earlier 3 Indiana Jones movies) the movie is set in 1957 at the height of the US-Soviet Cold War. It starts off with Jones being dragged out of Mexico by a bunch of Soviet comrades and hustled into a huge warehouse in Nevada (yes, Russians in the heart of US) and ordered to seek out a rare artifact. Led by iron-fisted and heavily-accented Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), the Soviets are searching for a Mayan artifact - a Crystal Skull - which will give whomsoever returns it to its rightful place its control, and of course, supreme power! Indi is betrayed by his old sparring partner but nevertheless escapes from the warehouse amidst a hail of bullets a la Hindi/Telugu movie heroes and even survives an Nuclear explosion later on! Back at Marshall College, he's approached by Mutt Williams (Shia LeBouf) whose Mum and Uncle Oxley were on the trail of the Skull but are now lost and need Indi's help. They've mailed a crypt-o-gram which Indi must solve to get to the Skull's location. Their quest leads them to the remote jungles of Peru and across the vast waterfalls of the Amazon, right into Inca/Mayan heartland where the Skull will finally unlock a long-hidden secret.

Fantastic and far-fetched it may sound, but hey, it's an Indiana Jones adventure! It is amazing how even at the age of 65, Harrison Ford can pull of this action-hero image of Indiana Jones. Not only does he solve the puzzles and the cryptic clues with a professorial finesse but he also leads the chase with an adventurous zest and glee. Shia's role is initially that of the scared n' confused sidekick but it develops into something serious later. Their banter and quirky chatter are laden with plenty of humour and do have a few memorable one-liners. Indi's old love makes a comeback - along with a startling revelation - and her fleck of a banter with Jones adds some more humour into proceedings. There are few cryptic clues and tough-to-crack puzzles along the way - including latch-driven-concrete walls, retracting-staircases, pattern-sliding giant doorways - which I dare say remind me of the National Treasure series! In fact, the climax can be said to a blend of National Treasure and The Mummy  . The best thing that I liked about the principal villain - Cate Blanchett - was her accent. Apart from that, the role was almost identical to late Amrish Puri's in Temple of Doom. Whilst he resorted to human sacrifice and heart-removals for power & dominance, Blanchett resorts to skull-placing and whatnot to realize her ambition of psychic warfare!!! Brr!!!

To conclude, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will remain as an enjoyable and time-pass action n' adventure flick. But whether it can match upto (or even surpass) its' predecessors & be considered as a worthy enough fourth-part, is debatable. I'd leave that for the die-hard Indi-fans to decide. For me, Harrison Ford's screen presence, the action n' adventure, the racy chases, the cryptic clues n' puzzles, et al are good enough for a movie that was as eagerly awaited-for as this. Of course, I was disappointed by the whole who-does-the-skull-belong-to rigmarole

My rating:

Yep, you heard that right, I just got back from the mall from seeing "Indiana Jones 4" this afternoon. I loved it even more than the first time I saw it. I learned a lot more things about the film the second time I've seen it. Those who don't like the film or think it was ok, go see it again and again, I'm sure it'll grow on you and it's an original film with a different story. I like the storytelling in Indy 4.

I didn't buy any new videogames today 'cause I gotta stop buying them for a while after I beat GTA 4 and several other games I haven't beaten yet.

So instead I picked up a few movies on DVD and a few music CD's. I picked up the new Rambo 2 disc DVD (I didn't get the Blu Ray, I went for the DVD instead), and I also picked up the movie "I'm Not There" (the Bob Dylan biopic starring a bunch of different stars, Heath Ledger, Cate Blanchett, etc.). For music CD's I picked up Mason Jennings new disc "In the Ever" and Scarlett Johansson's "Anywhere I Lay My Head".

I will reveiw all those soon.

Can't do my full blog tonight because I'm at Sister's house and all the pictures are on my computer at Mom's. We have a little activity planned for the morning, so I wanted to pop in and let you know I'll do the day 5 blog later on.

We went to see Speed Racer today, and between that and reading some other bloggers' comments about Indy 4, I started thinking about summer movies, expectation and what makes a movie "good."

Personally, I enjoyed Indy 4. I would recommend it to people as a great summer film. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, however, I would give a "wait" to, unless you were just dying to see it anyway.

And then I wondered why. I liked both movies. They were different, but they were both entertaining. So why recommend one for theater viewing and the other for DVD?

It has to do with the season, I think. When I go to a summer movie, I want fun. I want laughs. I want brain candy. I want to be entertained and I don't want to have to work for it. And that's what Indy 4 gave me: easy entertainment. It didn't take itself too seriously. I didn't have to work too hard to find the funny. It was a "beach read" in film form.

Caspian was the complete opposite. Caspian is a war movie. Like it or not, the PG rating doesn't change the fact that it's a movie about a Prince leading a disenfranchised people in a battle for his throne. It's heavy with allegory and imagery. The main characters are in mortal danger. At one point, High King Peter says something along the lines of: "I wonder what happens back home. If you die here." To me, Caspian was a winter movie, a Thanksgiving weekend release. It's the kind of movie I like to watch huddled into my favorite sweater and coat, hunkered down in my seat, putting my brain to work. Was it entertaining? Yes. Was it a good movie? Yes. Were there light moments? Yes. But it was not my idea of a summer film. It was not brain candy. Had this movie been released in November, I would have recommended it for theatre viewing.

What about you? Do you like different types of movies at different times? And if you do, what prompts the differences? Mood? Season? Je ne sais quoi?

=======

BTW, if you are under 10 and/or like video games, Speed Racer will be right up your alley. If you aren't under 10, don't like video games, or expect strong storytelling from your movies, give this one a pass.

Dir. Steven Spielberg; Writ. David Koepp, George Lucas; Star. Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, John Hurt, Shia LeBeouf.

Yeah, Harrison Ford is in his sixties, but Indiana Jones would be awesome if he was saving the world from a wheelchair. He’s still up and at ‘em in I.J.4. Ford tried to do as many of his own stunts as possible, and I can’t imagine doing half the stuff he does at 36, let alone 66. I couldn’t do it now.

I love Even Stevens, but I was scared the Shia TheBeef was going to leave a permanent blotch on the seminal action series. It turns out, he’s awesome. He’s no Indy, but the addition of “Mutt” is one of the strongest features of the film.

It’s really been too long for the silver screen to go without the archaeologist bludgeoning a seven foot villain. (I’d like to see Indy fight in a museum. What would he use to clobber the bad guys when he’s surrounded by the very artifacts he struggles to preserve?)

The first third of this film is not to be missed. It’s been 19 years since the Last Crusade came out, and time hasn’t slowed down for Indiana Jones. Set in the 50s, we’ve got Soviets instead of Nazis, American paranoia over American pride, and more leather jackets and less fedoras. The time piece segments of the movie were the ones I most enjoyed. If you remember the classic Indiana Jones’ humor of “No ticket,” you’re going to find it in the first third of this film.

The Crystal Skull is an Indiana Jones movie, so it’s automatically pretty damn awesome, though this is the weakest in the series. There’s never been so much sci-fi before, and it feels a little out of place. Mutt is cool; it’s nice to see Marian Ravenwood again; it makes sense that Jones would have an adventure partner as he gets older; and why not throw in Hurt as some old, crazy guy. In the end, there are just too many characters. My own opinion is that the whole shebang should’ve just been about Mutt and Indy. Cate Blanchett also could’ve had a bit more of a Russian accent and a bit less of not having one.

You’re kind of an idiot if you don’t see this movie, even if you don’t like it.

I’m an oober star wars fan, and I’m going to say it, “Fuck off, George Lucas. Fuck off.” I forgave Jar-jar Binks. I got over CGI Yoda. I went along with dialogue that would’ve been bad for a Spanish soap opera. George Lucas has gone too far. He needs to get lost. I used to dream of episodes 7-9. No longer. Computers can make some cool shit. Everyone gets it. That doesn’t mean I want to see goddamn CGI gophers and monkeys.

“Woah, DUDE! Check. It. Out.: Look, right there, on the screen! There’s a gopher! It, like, almost looks real, but not exactly! Thank God, they put in that eye-sore! There was totally no other way for that scene to be expressed!”

“Well, check this one out, bro! I’m totally shitting my pants over this baker’s dozen of CGI monkeys! I’m abso-fucking-lutely going to have to pretend my girlfriend is George Lucas tonight! How’s a guy supposed to get off otherwise after witnessing such cinematic brilliance?”

I’m waiting for computers to generate some taste.

I know George Lucas was the producer, but, come on, we all know this bullshit is his fault.

If you grew up in the 80’s like I did, then you’ll remember the adventures of Indiana Jo

If you grew up in the 80's like I did, then you'll remember the adventures of Indiana Jones. I've been working on this draft for a while, even starting from scratch again, but here it is in all its splendor, my commentary on the 4th installment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

I can't remember exactly what age I saw Indiana Jones for the first time, non scientific estimates would say roughly 5 or 6 years old, but what I can remember is that I knew I wanted to be an adventurous archaeologist like Mr. Jones when I grew up.

Last Sunday I took my eldest daughter, Elise, who is six to see the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Quite a lengthy title if you ask me.

Now I knew that Peru was going to be a destination featured in the new movie, but I had no idea to what extent other than from what I saw in one of the trailers where an airplane flies over the Nazca Lines. Imagine my excitement! Here I am in a country I love, Peru, and taking my daughter to see a movie that had influenced me when I was her age. Well it seems that I invested too much excitement only to be shocked and disappointed at what I saw when Indy travels to Peru.

"From Small Town USA to the other land mass below the Rio Grande."

The movie starts out good, not great, but good. Within the first 10 minutes you are introduced to evil communist Russians....Wait, wait, wait, let me be PC (Politically Correct) here and say "Soviets." There, now I'll continue, and of course Indiana Jones (who is preceded by the most famous brown Fedora hat in cinematic history) as he is pulled out of a trunk of a car by the evil cold war commies.

So blah, blah, blah Indy escapes, comes across a kid named "Mutt," Mutt has a secret message for him from his (Mutt's) mother, Mary and the paper has all sorts of drawings on it that only Indy can decipher. Cue evil Russians in Soda Fountain...excuse me again, Soviets...followed by Chevy vs. Motorcycle chase (through Yale...Irony coming later) and ending successfully in a study with Indy and Mutt trying to figure out the significance of Mary's letter. I hope you haven't seen the movie yet or otherwise I just spoiled it for you up to this point.

Professor Jones deciphers the clue which includes a line where Indy says something like "Only the gods can see" and Voila! Professor Jones excitedly opens a book with a map of Peru and points to Nazca, Peru which is relatively near the Pacific coast; ( Peru is situated on the West coast of the South American continent.)

Cut to airplane dotting a map with stops in Cuba, Panama, etc. before flying over the final destination of Peru...but somehow the Pilot seems to have lost his directional bearings as the final dot on the map reads Cuzco where the plane lands??? Here's where the confusion is, the map says the plane lands in Cuzco, but then you see Indy and Mutt at the dusty, chicken infested "Nazca Airport." How'd that happen?!

"X doesn't always mark the spot!"

Exhibit A: Map of Peru

Key: Spider = Relative Location of Nazca ; Fedora Hat = Relative Location of Cuzco. (Photobucket moved my icons a bit North.)

As you can see, Nazca is relatively close to the Pacific coast and Cuzco is...well, closer to landlocked Bolivia than the Pacific Ocean.

While on the map distances don't look that great it would take you approximately 11 hours to reach Cuzco from Nazca by speeding bus.

Did Indiana Jones and Mutt get abducted by spacemen and transported to the "Nazca Airport?" Oh wait, that's right, Nazca doesn't have an international, domestic or intergalactic airport! They have an airfield that serves the small tour companies that run 30 minute sight seeing flights over the Nazca Lines!

Good thing Professor Jones is a tenured Archeaologist and not a Professor of Geography! Man, they would be asking him for his job on that blunder!

So in a matter of scenes Indiana and Mutt fly to Cuzco, disembark at the "Nazca Airport," and arrive back at an Andean market in Cuzco again! Hardly 5 minutes into Peru and they sure have traveled quite a bit in this country!

Let's go back to that irony part I mentioned a section ago...the University where the big chase scene was filmed is actually Yale. A grave robber archaeologist named Hiram Bingham is credited for the scientific discovery of Machu Picchu and stole took back with him numerous artifacts and skeletal remains. Yale has illegally been in possession of these artifacts for a good 100+ years and refuses to return to Peru their cultural patrimony, citing that they'll keep it for a 100 years more. Did Mr. Spielberg happen to know that there is a dispute between the government of Peru and the University of Yale? Talk about a sensitive oopsy-daisy!

Getting back to the movie, from this point the inconsistencies in the film just keep getting worse better! Now you see an Andean market full of Indigenous Peruvians and the festive sounds of Mexican Mariachi Music....Oh boy! Here we go again! Indy is in 1950's Cuzco/Nazca (well one of them) Peru and there is Mariachi Music playing in the market! Indy must have been too busy fighting Nazis to have missed Disney's 1945 release of The Three Caballeros, which pays homage to our Latin American neighbors. Even cryogenically frozen Mr. W.D. knew that in the Andes they play Andean Music!

"Even money can't buy imagination!"

Exhibit B: Photo of actual musician at entrance of Machu Picchu.

Really, who the hell equates Machu Picchu with Mexican Music? Google "El Condor Pasa" and listen to the wav/mp3 and immediately you'll think of the Mysterious Andes (although El Condor Pasa is more about the flight of the Condor in Colca Canyon -- Refer to the map again and look South for Arequipa; the Colca Canyon is near there.)

Did the film makers expend the remainder of their imaginations on the past 3 films and 19 year time span it took to create the 4th installment that they couldn't calculate this one? Or was it a matter of budget cuts? Surely there has to be Andean music in Paramount's catalog of studio owned soundtracks!

Heck! They could have even gone to Peru hired a group to lay down some tracks and then be on their way! Everything is pirated down here anyway, but if you did have to pay it you wouldn't be paying out of the wazoo for a Peruvian group to perform for you! $80 greenbacks and they are happy!

So how do two gringos find their way through a Mexican/Andean market and to the clue that they are looking for? Ask one of the natives, of course! And who better to ask than Indiana Jones?! So Doctor Jones speaks to one of the uncivilized market natives and Mutt is amazed! "What language was that?" He asks, "Quechua" replies Dr. Jones who goes on to explain that he happened to pick it up back in his days when he rode with Pancho Villa and his men. ------SCREEEEEEEEAAAAAACCCCHHHH!------ Rewind! Did he say Pancho Villa? The infamous Mexican Outlaw?! Wow! Who knew that Pancho Villa was so well traveled and cultured! Yet another "Peru, Mexico...same difference" generalization.

For the record: Quechua was the lengua franca of the Incas and is still spoken today in parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru and just like any other language in this world, Quechua also has it's own dialects and variations.

Speaking of languages, Mutt and Indy find the church that they are looking for on their clue hunt and are taken to a dungeon...Those evil Roman Catholics!...where the infirm are imprisoned and tortured and the nuns speak Spanish with a Mexican accent....DAMN! ENOUGH OF MEXICO ALREADY! Don't get me wrong, I like the Mexicans, but Mexico is in Central America not South America!

So Indy and Mutt find strange drawings of elongated skulls in the cell where one of their friends was held and are off to jungle type ruins above the Nazca lines.

"Now where were we?!"

Exhibit C: Nazca is nowhere near the jungle!

As you can see from the map Peru has different eco-systems. Machu Picchu isn't exactly a short walk from Cuzco, it also lies at a lower altitude than Cuzco and is actually the beginning of the jungle.

Nazca is located near the sandy brown area just East of where the city of Ica is. Not that the movie shows them traveling to the jungel (yet) at this point, but the burial "ruins" pretty much give you the impression that they are near the jungle.

Enter stereotypical natives screaming like monkeys and running around like animals trying to poison Mutt and Jones with flying needles shot through bamboo sticks (ummm...there's bamboo in the desert?) and thus begins one of many battles of the mythological natives vs. the educated and much more civilized gringos.

I was already laughing when the plane missed Nazca, stopped laughing as soon as I heard the Mariachi music and now I am back to laughing at seeing misplaced ruins and uncivilized "in-juhns" chasing the gringos around. Isn't it funny how all the natives run around half naked like monkeys with their eyes painted like raccoons and speak the same ooga-booga language in every part of the uncivilized world? I've been reading the wrong World History books!

World History as taught by Professor Henry Jones, Jr.

So now that the film makers have managed to insult the Red Block and the people that live on that land mass below the Rio Grande we now side track for a moment to change Spanish (as in the people from that country in Western Europe called Spain) History.

What is Latin America without those heroes we Westerners refer to so lovingly as the "Conquistadors." You know those soldiers-slash-Roman Catholic evangelists who came to civilize and convert the heathen natives? Indiana Jones is on a mission to find where Conquistador Francisco de Orellana is buried in the desert, jungle burial ruins...If I have to mention it by now, burial ruins do not exist in Nazca!

So, I won't get into great depth, but in the movie Indy, while back at the University, finds a picture of Orellana...Inconsistency alert! As a program here in Peru points out, the picture that Mr. Jones points at is Francisco Pizarro, not de Orellana. Orellana was one of Pizarro's men, but he was ordered to navigate a river leading to a land believed to be the legendary El Dorado. Orellana navigated the entirety of the Amazon river and once he reached the Atlantic ocean he returned to Spain telling tales of tall jungle women, similar to the Amazon Women of Greek Mythology...Hence you have the Amazons and the Amazon River.

So for a recap, Jones and Mutt fly to Peru, visit a Roman Catholic Dungeon with elongated skulls painted all over the stone walls, go from Cuzco-Nazca-Cuzco-Nazca in a matter of a single day, fight inhuman, murderous natives protecting jungle burial ruins in the desert and FINALLY find the remains of de Orellana (He died in the lands he found) and of course the CRYSTAL SKULL!

"Luke Skywalker is my comrade, comrade!"

From here I'll fast forward through the rest of this baby! It's a long movie, so here's the short end of the stick:

Jones and Mutt go to the Amazonian Jungle on the border of Peru and Brazil where they find those damn commies step-dancing around a campfire who also happen have their formerly dungeon imprisoned friend (the artist of all those elongated heads), who is now a ward of the USSR.

Mutt's mom is actually Marianne and after Indy has a mind altering experience with the Crystal Skull, which is actually the elongated skull of an extraterrestrial, they temporarily escape the evil commies when Mutt, who is Indiana Jones' love child stages a surprise attack.

I don't remember too much of the in-betweens other than a chase in the Amazonian Jungle, a sword fight between Stalin's beloved Ukrainian ESP/KGB agen Irena Spalko and Indy's Bastard - Mutt, giant man eating ants and Indy and the gang escaping the commies once again by driving their boat/vehicle over a cliff and into a river that is actually a water fall on the border of Brazil and Argentina (not Brazil and Peru) and find a cave that looks like a skull.

Hi-ho-Hi-ho into the cave they go to come to another mystical land that is El Dorado!

Cave paintings show extraterrestrials teaching the uncivilized natives agriculture, architecture and art, and Indy realizes that George Lucas has gone Star Wars on the franchise.

More half naked, murderous Indians, scared off by the very skull that they protect (there's more than one) and into the middle of a Mezo-American Mayan pyramid....oh yeah, Quechua had been thrown completely out the window at this point and Mayan was then used as the lengua franca to decipher the clues and speak to the Aliens. (also all those scribblings, the Incas did not have pictographs or a written language, instead they used knotted strings called quipus to relay messages.)

Alien skull is reattached to alien skeleton, Commies catch up and try to succeed in their evil plan, which is to find El Dorado and unite the skulls to obtain the greatest cold war weapon of telepathic control.

Room starts spinning, Americans start running for their lives, evil commie lady stays behind, greedy for "all the knowledge," while her comrades are sucked up into the flying saucer that has been activated by the reattachment of the Crystal Alien Skull hence why the room is spinning.

Indy and them make it out and watch flying saucer disappear into the place between space and time (probably flying off to that galaxy far far away from a long time ago) and Indy has an epiphany and states that these (spacemen) were archaeologists....Funny since they were the ones that "introduced" the technology? Why would they collect their own crap?

Phheeewww! What a story! So basically it was a fun popcorn movie, nothing too memorable other than all those stereotypes and generalizations that stick out like a sore thumb, and half of the world beyond the borders of the United States pissed off by Spielberg, Lucas and their lazy writers!

They should have taken another 19 years and doubled the money to do a bit more research before insulting half the globe by their multi-millionaire ignorance. Geeesh! You think these guys would be a little more well traveled!

So maybe somebody should relocate NYC to LA, Place the Niagra Falls in the Grand Canyon and rewrite the Revolutionary war to have been won by the Red Coats....or better yet by DARTH VADER and his storm troopers!

The moral of the story? Don't take lessons from a fictional archeology professor, especially if he goes by the name of Indiana Jones. This movie was fantasy at its worst....at least fantasy leaves room for the imagination. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just destroys it!

After some discussion with people who either liked Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull more, or less

After some discussion with people who either liked Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull more, or less, than I did, I began to realize what the screenplay was lacking. The overall premise of the story shouldn't really matter, be it the search of crystal skulls, magical stones, or holy cups, rather it's what lies underneath it. The subtext, if you will. I know, the Indiana Jones series isn't meant to be taken seriously, they're just fun throwbacks to the old-school adventure serials of the 30's and 40's, and I can totally appreciate them for that. The thing is, a sequel needs to be at least as good as the movie that came before it, or else fans of the predecessor will get upset. I think Star Wars, as a series, solidified itself in the pantheon of great films because of The Empire Strikes Back, a film considered to be, story-wise, superior to the original. It was like Lucas was saying, "We know they're expecting better visuals, but what if we gave them a grander and more personal story, too?"

The Indiana Jones series, I think, faltered a bit with Temple of Doom. While the movie itself was fine, it felt like more of the same, just with a new sidekick (Short Round instead of Sallah), new woman (Mrs. Spielberg...I mean Kate Capshaw replacing Karen Allen), and new location (India instead of the Middle East). While Temple of Doom was darker, I felt it added some real threat to Indy and made him feel less invincible. To this day, I still cringe when he's tied to that rack and lowered into the pit. I just felt that the movie didn't advance anything. I personally didn't feel I learned anything new about Jones.

The redeeming film, for me, was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. On the outside, it was more of the same. Indy's globe-trotting with Sallah again, and he's got a beautiful blond German girl along for the ride, in search of the legendary Holy Grail. What made this one stand out was that when they added in Sean Connery as Dr. Jones, Sr., Steven Spielberg really went with it. The last scene where they're in the Grail's resting place is pivotal, not just from a plot standpoint, but from a character standpoint. Indy, and in turn the audience, learns a lot about the internal workings of the character not because of the Holy Grail, but through the interactions between him and his father. The filmmakers made us really buy into this relationship.

Now, with Crystal Skull, we're supposed to buy into these new plot points introduced throughout the movie. I personally don't have a problem with Mutt being Indy's son, but it's not what I wanted the movie's subtext to focus on. The difference between Crystal Skull and Last Crusade is that more time went by between those two movies, as opposed to just five years with Temple of Doom and Last Crusade. Indy's older, and though Spielberg and Co. acknowledge this within the first few moments of re-introducing Indy, I don't think they play it up enough. I want to see a slightly more cautious Indiana Jones, a more reflective one. Again, I understand that these movies are really meant for pure entertainment, but I think that this latest one could have achieved something on the same level that Last Crusade hit: it showed us something about the characters.

Indiana Jones has been through a lot, and at his age he should be more nostalgic. We get a sense of this back at Indy's house before he and Mutt leave for their grand adventure. However, if the screenplay had just touched upon this a little more, I think it would have a greater impact on future scenes, like when he meets with Marion again, or when he realizes he's Mutt's father. When I was mulling this over, I kept thinking about Rocky Balboa the sixth and final film in the Rocky series. I really liked that movie, it was a great bookend to the series and brought everything full-circle. A lot of people make fun of Stallone because he's old (about as old as Harrison Ford) and he's still playing these muscle-bound action stars (one of my cousins said he looked like an over-cooked hot dog), but he wasn't trying to play Rocky Balboa in the final film as an action star. He was very sentimental (somewhat too much), but it brought everything down to earth at a level many of us can relate to. Rocky's lost his wife, he's distant from his son, his career is over. He's now an businessman who's relegated to re-living his experiences by telling people about them. I think Indy could've used a bit of that. It's not enough to show us pictures of Marcus Brody or Indy's dad, make us feel sorry for Indy's loss.

I think that the age should've played a factor in some of the action scenes. Maybe then I'd feel more of a threat to his well-being. I know this isn't the kind of movie where the hero dies, but I didn't get this sense that Indy was getting hurt. He got pretty banged up in the previous movies, and he was young then. Show him with a black eye, or with a limp, or something that makes me believe that all this violence is taking a toll on his body. He's sixty years old! I'll totally buy that a sixty-year-old man is running, punching, swinging, but what I won't buy is that this old man isn't going to feel it in the morning. Think of the tension they could've built if Indy had some trouble seeing (the character does wear glasses) when he was firing that rocket.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is this: I still enjoyed Crystal Skull. What I believe didn't work of many people was the connection. Weird sci-fi stuff aside, this film didn't have a personal connection with people. The audience watching this will be made up of, primarily, people who have seen and loved the originals. What they were looking for was an acknowledgment of that, something more than just a picture or a run-in with a past character. When Indy walked down the aisle with Marion at the end, it should have felt like Han seeing Leia after being freed from the carbonite, not just a happy storybook ending. Again, still enjoyed the movie and, overall, I liked it more than Temple of Doom. It just lost that connect that Last Crusade established, not just the connection between the characters, but the connection between Indy and the audience.

But, maybe it's not the fault of the writers or the filmmakers. Roger Ebert said this about The Last Crusade:

"If there is just a shade of disappointment after seeing this movie, it has to be because we will never again have the shock of this material seeming new."

What I take this to mean is that, even if there will be sequels, it won't feel fresh anymore because an original is hard to follow and an audience's expectations run just a little too high. Or maybe it's because nothing can truly live up to our childhood memories.

ATTENZIONE:

Staremo a vedere.

...or wasn't Indiana Jones and the Belated Sequel (insert that crystal skull thing here) actually not that bad? Definitely not worth the fanboy outrage you can see on AICN, and most certainly not prequel awful; it's actually quite endearingly old-school. And Shia LaBeouf isn't nearly as bad as he was in Transformers, although he most certainly is unnecessary.

It does get a whole lot better once Karen Allen turns up, though. And John Hurt always does a good nutbag. And... oh, what the hell, it's OK. You could definitely do worse right now.
