Today's quick tip was inspired by a reader question. The gentleman used to use an old technique to "print" webpages to text files so that he could edit and incorporate the text into his documents, and he wanted to know if he could still do this, but in a more modern way.
I would like to take a moment here to remind my readers that I do answer questions sent to me; and also that if I believe the question-and-answer will benefit "everyone", you could very well see it posted here.

Q: How do I copy the text on a webpage to my document?
A: There is actually a couple of different ways to do this, including the old "print-to-file" method that DOS users remember. The trick is to get just the text and information you want, and not all the advertising and hyperlinks and graphics/logos that most webpages incorporate.

1) If all you need is a small portion of text from a webpage, the easiest way to get it from your browser to your word processor is to 'highlight' the sentence (or paragraph) on the webpage, press Ctrl+C to Copy, click on the place in your document that you'd like to insert the text and hit Ctrl+V to Paste the selection into your document (you may have to change the font and text size to match the rest of your document's format).
Sometimes, it can be a little tricky -- working in the browser -- getting your cursor to change from an arrow (navigation) to the vertical bar and selecting the page's text. But rest assured that you can 'select' the text on a webpage. Usually you have to get the point of the arrow very close the edge of the first letter, and make small, gentle mouse movements until the cursor changes. You could also try clicking in an easier part of the text, and use your arrow keys to move the cursor to where you want it.
(As a writer, I simply must express my hope that you will pay some mind to the concept of Copyrights, and original work, and properly attribute your "borrowed" material.)

2) But if you want all the information on the webpage, and you want it to be available as a file you can reference at your leisure, the Copy>Paste method is not the best and another technique will serve you better.
Some people prefer to download the webpages in a method called "Offline webpages", which is a whole 'nother topic. Offline gives you the whole webpage -- logos/graphics, links, ads -- as if you were connected to the Internet, and this is more info than we need for today's topic... we just want the text.

In Firefox and the older Internet Explorer 6 (Please, folks; IE 6 is quite probably the most hacked program ever written-- update to IE7, or use an "alternative" browser), you can click on the "File" menu on your browser's toolbar. IE7 users (who haven't re-enabled the old Menu bar) should click on the "Page" button. Whichever manner you used, now click on "Save As".

Now the Save As window will open, and here is where we will make our important decisions.

As usual, you will be presented with the ability to select the "where" the file will be Saved, and give it a name. But the primary thing is to select the "Save as type", so that we will have a file we can use as we want to-- in this case, a text file (.txt).
Once the webpage is Saved as a text file, you will be able to Open it with any word processor. And you will be able to edit it to your heart's content.. and it will be available whenever you need it.

*If you decide to Save the webpage as one of the other options in the "file type" (or, made a mistake here) selection, and Save the page as an *.htm,*html file or even a "archive", you will still be able to Open it with a word processor [by default, it will open with your browser] and edit it... it will just contain a whole bunch of junk-looking code, as well as the text you want.

Today's free link: I am not a real big fan of free all-in-one "optimization" programs, but I do have one that I like and can recommend. Advanced WindowsCare Personal. From publisher: "is a comprehensive PC care utility that takes an one-click approach to help protect, repair and optimize your computer.

If you're running IE7 under WinXP, in order to run Windows Explorer with the runas command, it must be run as a separate process. There's a couple of ways to do this, but one that I recently found which is very slick is with the undocumented parameter /separate, like this:

Oh, and if you've got a space in your username, enter it as /user:"domain\user name"

A couple of quick tips to start the week, which were stimulated by reader questions.

Tip(s) of the day: How about that? Two for the price of one!
Tip 1) In response to public demand, Google has added a feature to its Gmail service which will force it to always use SSL encryption when you logon (https). This is particularly beneficial to those of you who use wireless, public computers, and/or public 'hotspots'. All you need to do is turn it on.
[note: a secured session is not the same thing as encrypting your individual messages. For my How To on that, click here.]

To turn on the "always use" feature, log on to your Gmail account, and in the upper-right area, find, and click on the "Settings" link.
Now, scroll down to the bottom, and in the "Browser connection" option, click on the "always use https" radio button, and then click on "Save Changes".

That's it. You're done. Now your connection to the mail server will be encrypted and you'll be protected from packet sniffers.

Tip 2) Sometimes programs get "corrupted" and just refuse to work right, and usually the way to repair them is to uninstall them (Add/Remove Programs), and then re-Install a fresh copy.
One of my more popular articles has been how to repair the hyperlinks function in IE when clicking on a link doesn't open a new page (if that's your issue, click here), and this tip goes a little further than that. (To see all my articles on Internet Explorer, click on "IE 7" in my Categories widget.)

You can resolve many troublesome IE issues by "resetting" it (which also re-registers .dll's).
For IE 7:
Click on "Tools" and then "Internet Options".
On the Advanced tab, and then click the "Reset" button.

For IE 6:
[note: I highly, sincerely, and ardently, urge you to stop using IE 6, and switch to 7, or Firefox 3, or Avant, or whatever. Please? It's only the most hacked piece of software ever!]
a: Click Start, click Run, type "%systemroot%\inf" (no quotes) and then press Enter.
b: Find the Ie.inf file that is located in Windows\Inf folder.
c: Right-click the Ie.inf file, and then click Install.
d: Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete

Today's free link: In one of the tips above, I mentioned Windows' Add/Remove Programs tool (found in your Control Panel) which is the standard method for uninstalling programs from your machine. Long-time Windows users can attest that this utility doesn't always work as it should, and completely remove all traces of the app you want gone. To really remove a program, you may want the power of a 3rd-party uninstall program, and the one that's most recommended in the Geek community is Revo Uninstaller (also available in a portable version).

Bookmarks (called “Favorites” in Internet Explorer) make returning to our favorite Websi

Bookmarks (called "Favorites" in Internet Explorer) make returning to our favorite Websites an easy task, and I -- for one -- rely on mine. The other day I got a call from someone whose Favorites had disappeared. Quite naturally, I think, they wanted to get them back, and came to me for aid.

An important thing to understand is that Favorites and Bookmarks are shortcuts.. just like the icons on your Desktop are shortcuts to programs (.exe's) located in your c:\Program Files folder.
Your Favorites are simply a list of shortcuts to URL's, and when you click on the gold star Favorites icon, this list is displayed. You can "export" this list to other browsers, a comma-separated-values (.csv) file, or a HTML file.. And you can add and delete items from this list as your heart desires.

Tip of the day IE is a integral component to Windows, and Windows stores your custom configurations in your User Account-- your Desktop icons, Theme, Settings, etc.. Windows allows for multiple users, and each person who uses the machine should have their own user account-- it also has some built-in accounts, like Administrator, and Guest.

If your Favorites is empty, and not displaying any shortcuts, the first thing you should check is that you're logged into your User Account. Click the Start button, and then choose "Log off" (or "Switch User", depending) and verify that you are indeed logged into your user profile (and not Guest or Admin..).

If this is not the issue, navigate to the folder that contains the shortcuts list-- this is called "Favorites", and it's located in your User folder. In XP, your User folder is in the Documents and Setting folder, so your path is c:\Documents and Settings\User*.
In Vista, it's c:\Users\user.

Open the Favorites folder and see if your bookmarks are there. If they're not, well, something's happened to them somehow, and this might be a cause for concern (has a hacker been playing on your machine?) or it might not.
To restore the shortcuts, you can "import" a .csv, or .html 'export' you made earlier (hint, hint).. or copy the contents from a backup copy of your Favorites folder (which, because you follow my advice, you have on CD/DVD and another drive).

Or, you have never exported and haven't backed up your files and folders.. (ahem), well, here is where you can try System Restore to revert your computer to an earlier date. System Restore does not restore deleted files, but it does store User Account information, and so you may have luck this way.
My article on using System Restore is here.

Today's free link: PowerISO is a powerful CD/DVD image file processing tool, which allows you to open, extract, create, edit, burn, compress, encrypt, split and convert ISO files, and mount these files with internal virtual drive. It can process almost all CD-ROM image files including ISO and BIN.

Baixe a versão standalone do IE6 (atualmente bem mais estável) e descompacte em uma pasta qualquer;

Para habilitar os cookies, baixe este arquivo e descompacte-o na mesma pasta da versão standalone;

Para alterar o título do programa para IE 6.0 (Microsoft Internet Explorer), baixe este arquivo e descompacte-o na mesma pasta da versão standalone;

Windows Secrets is an informational web site and a newsletter providing lots of useful information about Windows, Windows security, Windows tuning tips and tricks, and other types of Windows problems and work arounds. Every IT guy, or any home geek who has Windows or provides help to others who run Windows, should have the Windows Secrets site among their favorites.

Which is a great place to read articles regularly, but what about keeping up with on-going information? Well, as I said, there is a collection of newsletters to provide you with information on various bits and pieces of the Microsoft's various operating systems. This link takes you to the edition of the news letter dated June 12, 2008.

From that edition come these two search add-ons to help you better look for information about that pesky Windows problem you are having:

A tool tuned to finding information in Windows Secrets using the Google API written by the Windows Secrets folks.

A tool tuned to finding information anywhere on the internet that Google thinks specializes in Windows information. Again, this uses a Google API written by the Windows Secrets folks.

And a page with plug-ins for IE 7 + or Firefox 2 +. Both tuned searches are available to you.

Now go ye forth, search, fix, prosper.

I have posted several advice articles on your computing safety, and that of your child’s, in t

I have posted several advice articles on your computing safety, and that of your child's, in the past. It is my personal passion to thwart digital Evil Doers. I cannot emphasize enough that there are steps you can -- and should -- take to reduce your risks of Identity Theft and spyware infections. I have posted these steps for you to take advantage of (free), and I will continue to do so. I encourage you to use the Search box in the upper right to find and read past Tech--for Everyone security articles.

Tip of the day: Increase your security and privacy by removing your browsing tracks. All browsers record histories, store copies of the webpages you've visited, and to be helpful, store your log on User Names and Passwords, and the answers to forms you've filled out. Your machine is programmed to be as fast, efficient, and helpful as it can, and it takes steps you may not be aware of to do this.

For instance, your browser will store a "temp" copy of this Webpage in one of many "temporary" folders, and make a note of the time. This is done so that should you return to this page, your machine can load it from local memory; which is much faster than downloading HTML instructions, text, and graphics and building the page. It uses the timestamps to determine if there's been changes to the "source" page, and if there has been, it will download the newer page. This helps to give you the illusion of a "fast Internet".
Other automatic conveniences that record your personal information are Autocomplete, Autofill, and AutoLogon. This is usually accomplished through the use of cookies. (In spite of what you may have heard, all "cookies" are not "bad".) Hackers know where to look for all this stored information, and they know how to exploit it. Today I am going to show you how to counteract, and change some of this automatic behavior and help you keep your privacy, well, private.

Start by opening IE and clicking on the down-arrow to the right of the Tools menu and selecting Internet Options. (Loyal readers of this blog will already be familiar with this window.)

In the "Browsing History" area, click on the "Delete" button. Now a menu window will open...
Here you are presented with your choices of what to erase (or to "delete all") and what not. I recommend getting into the habit of regularly clicking on the first, third, and fourth delete buttons -- Temp files, History, and Form data. [Form data is particularly important to erase if you have made an online payment, and/or entered your credit card number. Even if you did so on a Secured site.] Sadly, there is no method to set IE to do this automatically for you (you would need a 3rd party utility for that...see today's free link) and you must remember to this manually.

You can, however, set IE to erase the "temp" files automatically. Click on the Advanced tab of Internet Options, and scroll down to the Security list of settings. Place a check (select) in the checkbox next to "Empty Temporary Internet files when browser is closed", as shown below. Then click "Apply", and "OK".

Today's free link: the tool I use to erase the digital breadcrumbs on my machines is Absolute Shield Internet Eraser. From site: "AbsoluteShield Internet Eraser protects your privacy by cleaning up all the tracks of your Internet and computer activities. The tool is integrated with IE and it can erase the browser cache, history, cookies, typed URLs, autocomplete list and so on in one click. You can also set the tool to automatically erase those tracks when you quit IE or quit Windows."

Klik Tools > Options > Privacy.

Ketik about:config di address bar, tekan Enter.

Klik Tools > Delete Browsing History in Internet Explorer 7.

My recent article on tweaking IE 7 and using Security Zones has prompted several reader questions wh

My recent article on tweaking IE 7 and using Security Zones has prompted several reader questions whose answers are worth posting here. So today there will not be my usual Tip of the day, but instead there will be several Q's and their A's. If for some reason you missed the original article and would like to get up to speed, click here.

Q. Can't add a site to Trusted Zone, Why are my options "greyed out"?
A. The person who sent me this question did not specify if they were experiencing this at home, or at work, which can have different causes. If you are on your personal machine at home, the most likely cause for having any Settings or Options choices grayed out (unavailable) is that you are running in User mode. You need to be running as an Administrator to make changes to Windows' behavior. Log out of your current session by clicking on Start >Log Off and switch to a user account with administrator privilege. Now your menu choices will not be grayed out and you can make your changes. When you're finished, log off and return to your normal user account.
If you're at work and using the company's machine, it is likely that there are policies in place that prevent employees from making these kinds of changes. If you have a legitimate change (that will "help improve your productivity") that you'd like to have made, submit a request to your IT department.
**Also, some types of malware will modify your Trusted Sites zone (adding poisoned, or junk sites such as a bogus lottery) and then change a setting in your Registry which blocks -- greys outs -- your ability to go in and remove them. Use anti-spyware programs to scan your machine and remove the infection. In this case, I would start with the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and then click here for my list of free, safe, and effective antispyware apps.

Q. How do I remove a site from a Zone?
A. You can remove a site from any Zone by navigating to the Security tab of Internet Options as shown in the prior article, click on the zone you want to edit, and then click on the site you want to remove, as shown below.

Now click on the "Remove" button.
Actually, the fella who sent me this question was referring specifically to the Restricted Sites zone. He either really doesn't trust Microsoft, or is trying purposely to load his machine with malware...either way, I would think twice before removing sites from the Restricted Sites zone!

Q. What should I do with these security warnings?
A. IE displays several types of warnings -- suspected phishing, ActiveX, prevented download, open site in your Trusted Zone, et al -- and so the answer depends on which warning you are getting...and what you're doing when you get them.
If you are being warned that the site you're looking at is a "suspected" Phishing site, then by all means do NOT enter any personal information! As these sites often also try to install trojan horses and malware downloaders, close down your browser and run a full antispyware sweep. Not all "suspected" sites are truly Phishing sites, sometimes mistakes happen, but in this day and age, it's better to err on the side of caution.
ActiveX is a tool (a bit like Java) that usually is used for good purposes, more often than not actually (Microsoft Update uses ActiveX, and that's something you definately want enabled), but in keeping with the thought expressed immediately above, you should decide on a case-by-case basis. If you can see and do everything you want to on a site without installing the ActiveX control, why install it?
Preventing unwanted downloads is a very good thing, so I strongly advise you: do not turn this warning feature off. Just click on the yellow bar and select "download this software" when you are downloading code. In fact, I believe this advice can be applied to all of IE's warnings. We are living in a world where the Internet is relatively unpoliced, and so while it is irritating, it is safer (and wiser) to live with these warnings that to have our identity stolen and used to commit crimes, or have our PCs turned into a spambot.

Today's free link: if you suspect a site is fraudulent and/or being used to "phish" for your personal information, and IE hasn't flagged it as such -- but you're suspicious anyway -- download McAfee's free Site Advisor. This IE "plug in" will give you a valuable 'second opinion'...and is updated more often than IE is.

Reader questions this week bring me back to IE 7 and the Taskbar, and a new topic: what to do when an Update causes crashes and other troubles. So today I will not post my usual Tip of the day, but the (hopefully) now familiar "Q's and their A's" format.

IE 7 Questions: (you may want to review my post on IE7 Security zones, and Questions answered, as well.)

Q: My Explorer menu bar disappeared, how do I get it back?
A: In IE version 7, the old familiar menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.) was removed from the default configuration to 'streamline' IE's look, and quite possibly because Microsoft was aware that people were installing their own toolbars (see "toolbar madness"). To get it back, use a method similar to the one used for Windows' Taskbar. Click on the down arrow next to the gray "gear" icon marked "Tools" and click on the Menu bar option. Now a checkmark will appear next to it, and your menu bar is back. To keep it there, hover your mouse over the option below Menu bar, "Toolbars", and click on (select) the "Lock the toolbars" option.
While you're there, you may want to play around with the "Customize" option and tweak which buttons appear on your bars.

Q: I can't add a site to my Trusted zone:
A: I answered this in the previous answers post, but this detail is worth repeating: The person was on their personal machine and was running as an administrator, so there's no problem there. The trouble was they hadn't cleared the checkbox next to "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone".The difference is the "s" at the end of "http", which indicates a special, secured Internet protocol. You will know if you're on such a Website by the gold lock icon that appears in the URL window (and/or elsewhere on the page). It is an encrypted connection generally only used for electronic payment sites. A check here prevents you from adding regular websites.

Q: Can I make IE block sites when my child is browsing, but allow them for me?
A: This is a great question! And the answers are: yes, sort of, and ... how many sites are we talking about? There are a couple of ways to go about this, but I want to spend more time on this topic than there's room for here today. Protecting your children from the dangers of the Internet is a huge subject. Please see my page on this topic.

Taskbar question:

Q: What happened to the icons in my Taskbar?
A: These "my icons disappeared" questions depend on if we're talking about the Notification area (on the right, by the clock), or the Quick Launch area (on the left, by the Start button).
In the Notification area, an icon's disappearance usually indicates that the "process" has gone idle and is not "running" at the moment. That means it isn't needed, and hasn't been needed for quite some time. It will run when it's needed so, in this case don't worry about it. In some instances, such as the speaker icon or the the two PC's network icon,

a checkbox has become unchecked and you simply need to check it again. Click on Start >Control Panel >Speakers and Audio devices, and select (check) the "Place an icon in the Taskbar".

If the Quick Launch icons have disappeared, right-click on a blank area in the Taskbar and select Properties. Click on the Taskbar tab, and place a check in the checkbox labeled "Show Quick Launch". As I have mentioned before, these Quick Launch icons are simply shortcuts. You can add more shortcuts here by simple drag-and-drop, or remove the ones you never use.

NOTE: If your icons have always been there and then, suddenly, some (or all) of them are gone -- you may have picked up some malware. I recommend that you run "deep" antivirus and an anti-spyware scans immediately.

Windows Update:

Q: An Update is causing BSOD's, what do I do?
A: From time to time a Microsoft security Update will not be compatible with the software and/or device drivers on your machine and the instability will trigger the Blue Screen Of Death (for more on BSOD's and what to do, see "When good computers go bad"). Usually, Microsoft will repair this and issue a new Update ... eventually. In the meantime, remove the Update (If you're not sure which Update is the perp, remove the most recent ones) by going to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel. (Start >Settings >Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs) Now look to the top area and place a check (select) in the "Show updates" checkbox. Now you will be able to see the list of installed Updates.

Click on the Update you want to remove, and click on the Remove button.

Today's free link: I do NOT recommend uninstalling security updates unless they cause your machine to become inoperable. I am a big fan of security updates and want all my vulnerabilities patched. If you're like me in that aspect, Secunia's Personal Software Inspector is for you. While this software is still in beta, it is very good at scanning all your programs and reporting any missing updates and open vulnerabilities. (Thanks Ryan!)

Loyal Friends and True of this series know that I am a big fan of the Service Pack, and so I am pleased to report that SP3 for Windows XP is now available through Microsoft Update.

I look forward to the release of “Service Packs”. (Here is how Microsoft describes a Service Pack: “Service packs are the means by which product updates are distributed. Service packs may contain updates for system reliability, program compatibility, security, and more. All of these updates are conveniently bundled for easy downloading.") I look forward to SP’s not only because they roll several Updates into one download, but Service Packs also (sometimes) include new products/features — such as, XP SP2 added the Security Center and a firewall.

And besides… I’m a “security guy.” I am all for getting patches (aka “Updates” ) and have written many advice articles urging folks to thwart hacker vulnerability exploits and to keep their software updated; most recently, Learn to love the pop-up. If there’s a patch, I say “get it!”

XP Service Pack 3 is a fairly typical 'pack'; it has "rolled into one" all of the critical security updates (aka "patches") into one, as well as some of the optional ones (this is a real time saver if you ever have to re-install XP.. there have been hundreds of Updates released since SP2).
It also adds some new (to XP) "features", but these are mostly (network) security-related and invisible to the user. While not exactly exciting, thrilling, or "cool", you do want them.
As a bonus, you'll find some performance gains as well.

[Note: IE 6-- if you're still using XP, and you're also still using IE 6, XP SP3 will not force the upgrade to IE 7... though my personal feeling is it should. I will say it once again: IE 6 is the most hacked piece of software ever written, won't you please, please (with sugar on top) stop using it? IE 8 is already here (in beta)..]

XP Service Pack 3 is also available for download here.
Microsoft's Knowledge Base on system requirements, steps to take before you install, and troubleshooting the installation can be read here.
[Update 6/12/08: If you are having technical difficulties installing SP3, Microsoft is offering free support at 1-866-234-6020. Click here for more details/options]

[update: Please note that Norton has advised that if you are running a Norton Product, you should turn it off before installing SP3. For details, click here (and scroll down a little bit).]

Today's free link(s): Kongregate is a Flash-based game portal featuring 4,407 different free games (scroll down to look at the different categories). Over four thousand! Check it out, and try a few.

Also-- please read my friend Bill Mullins' article on infected websites and false Search results. This is a "must read" if you use the Internet.. and, it concisely spells out what you can do about protecting yourself. Loyal Friends and True know that Mr. Mullins and I agree on a lot of things; click here to read the article and find out why.

Poll results for 'The 100 top Web apps for 2008" are out. The poll was conducted by Webware.com. Over 1.9 million votes were cast by internet users all over the globe. The winners in some of the categories are:

One of the nice things about 'modern' web browsers is they let you open multiple sites in a single window through the use of "tabbed browsing". This allows you to quickly flip back and forth between relevant sites.. while keeping an eye on your webmail Inboxes. No more minimizing/maximizing from your Taskbar.

One of the not so nice things about tabbed browsing is that when you hit Ctrl+T and open a new tab, it doesn't go straight to where you want to go.. but opens to MSN (or some other pre-defined site) or more likely it says...

Yes. I know. I'm the one that hit Ctrl+T.
This may be tolerable.. and even informational, the first few times you ever use "tabbed browsing".. but I do not particularly enjoy being told that I have just done something that I did on purpose ("You've typed some words").
"You've opened a new tab" has got to go. Fortunately, this "Welcome to Tabbed Browsing" page has my very favorite-est computing checkbox on it (down towards the bottom), the "Don't show this again" option. I love seeing this option. Place a check in the box, and the next time you open a new tab you will get...

Which is not only less insulting to my intelligence, but it loads faster. I like faster.

In Internet Explorer 7, there is a new tab behavior that just makes no sense to me, and I believe it is the default behavior (which makes even less sense)-- that is, when you open a new tab, it doesn't open next to your current Webpage.. but launches a whole 'nother instance of IE.. and you're back to Taskbar minimizing/maximizing again. This "option" shouldn't even exist.. much less be the default: it is called the "Open in new window" setting. Let's turn this off and force IE to keep all our work in one place-- the current window.
From the "Tools" (a gray gear icon) menu in the upper-rt. corner, select Internet Options.

In the "Tabs" heading, click the "Settings" button to open up our tab behavior options.

You want to change the radio buttons in two places: the middle option, "When a pop-up is encountered" and "Open links from other programs" should be set to "new tab". Click "OK".
That's it, you're done. Now your browser will behave (more) the way you want it to.

* If your new tab opens to MSN (or some other pre-defined page [called a "homepage"]) and you don't want to be exposed to the potentially dangerous Flash advertisements and/or it takes to long to load, or whatever reason, you can uncheck the box next to "Open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page". Now Ctrl+T will always open to a quick blank tab. (When you do want to see MSN/homepage, click the house icon on your menu bar.)

* * Another alternative is to change the browser's "home page" to a Website of your choosing -- your 'personalized' page your ISP gave you, maybe. My Quick Tip article on how to do that is here. Note: if you do this, and want new tabs to open to your page, place a check in the box (option) mentioned in the paragraph above.

[Note: while these screenshots, and specific menu choices, are IE, the procedure applies to pretty much all web browsers. "Internet Options" may be named simply "Options", or "Preferences".]

Today's free link: Some people need lists in order to function efficiently and actually get things done (I have found that if I ignore my lists, I can get a lot less accomplished). Todoist is an online list service that is clean and efficient and yet supports a large variety of complex services (nested lists, calendaring, e-mail integration, etc.) and integrations.

We currently have a problem with our Myspace, where you can wiev it properly in IE 7, but not in IE 6 or Firefox, It's the same problem on a Mac when viewing in Firefox or Sarafi....very annoying....

Is there a standard? Well I think there should be...

Thank you!!

The other day I was looking at this fella’s screen and noticed that his Internet Explorer look

The other day I was looking at this fella's screen and noticed that his Internet Explorer looked quite a bit different than what I was used to seeing, and so I took a closer look. It was different--the whole top half of his browser window was solid toolbars. He had the Google toolbar, the Yahoo toolbar, his ISP's toolbar, a Merriam-Webster dictionary toolbar, a Dogpile toolbar, Alta Vista, some kind of stockticker, a weather report...and at least four or five others I can't recall now.
I guess he wanted to be "well-informed."

I can see how a person might want more options than to rely on Google, and Google alone, for search results--as good as Google is at that task. And I can also see the advantage that some of these toolbars provide in the way of pop-up blockers, and some include anti-spyware capability. I used to use the Merriam-Webster dictionary toolbar (occasionally) because I cannot spell without help [as I'm sure my regular readers can guess]. I can also understand how a guy (or gal) would want to keep an eye on his investments. But, come on, when is "enough" really "too much"?

Well in this particular fella's case, it was when the pop-up blockers started to overlap and conflict with each other. He couldn't get certain email attachments, nor, sometimes even regular webpages to open. Not to mention his viewing window was teeny...

Tip of the day: If you use multiple toolbars that have pop-up blocking, and/or a pop-up blocking utility, such as PopUp Cop, turn all but one of them off. And if you want to search multiple search-engines with a single click, use a metasearch engine or "metacrawler" which look in multiple sources with a single click. (Dogpile is one of these...though our friend didn't seem to know it.) There are many such tools/toolbars available -- one of the earliest was WebFerret -- and they're almost all free.

If you use IE 7, and are reluctant to add a toolbar, you can add search engines to the built-in search window as well as set the default (IE searches MSN by default). Open IE and click on the down arrow next to the magnifying glass in the search window. Now select "add more providers", and follow the steps. Now you'll have the ability to select who (where) you want to run the search on, but it will not search more than one at a time...but, at least you won't have to retype your search string.

If you want to employ the KISS Principal, and reclaim your viewing window size, and yet want the features a toolbar can provide, like pop-up blocking and metasearching, I recommend using an all-in-one toolbar like the one listed below.

Today's free link: Advanced Toolbar. "The Advanced Searchbar is a FREE award winning toolbar that enables you to search over 100 search engines and is loaded with features that make searching and browsing the Internet easier than ever. The Advanced Searchbar has more features than the Google, Yahoo and MSN toolbars combined. No other toolbar has as many features."
BTW-- the other toolbars mentioned are download links as well.

I have posted several advice articles on your computing safety, and that of your child's, in the past. It is my personal passion to thwart digital Evil Doers. I cannot emphasize enough that there are steps you can -- and should -- take to reduce your risks of Identity Theft and malware infections. I have posted these steps for you to take advantage of (free), and I will continue to do so. I encourage you to use the Search box in the upper right to find and read past Tech--for Everyone security articles.

Tip of the day: Increase your security and privacy by removing your browsing tracks. All browsers record histories, store copies of the webpages you've visited, and to be helpful, store your login User Names and Passwords ("cookies"), and the answers to forms you've filled out. Your machine is programmed to be as fast, efficient, and helpful as it can, and it takes steps you may not be aware of to do this.

For instance, your browser will store a "temporary" copy of this webpage in one of many "temp" folders, and make a note of the time. This is done so that should you return to this page, your machine can load it from local memory-- which is much faster than downloading HTML instructions, text, and graphics and building the page. It uses the timestamps to determine if there's been changes to the "source" page, and if there has been, it will download the newer page, or element.
The geek lingo for this is "tracks erasing."

Start by opening IE and clicking on the down-arrow to the right of the Tools menu and selecting Internet Options. (Loyal readers of this blog will already be familiar with this window.)

In the "Browsing History" area, click on the "Delete" button. Now a menu window will open.

Even if you did so on a Secured site.]

Tip of the day #2: set IE to erase the "temp" files automatically. Click on the Advanced tab of Internet Options, and scroll down to the Security list of settings. Place a check (select) in the checkbox next to "Empty Temporary Internet files when browser is closed", as shown below. Then click "Apply", and "OK".

This will remove any residual code your browser has picked up from various sites you've visited, and render it harmless.
