Click here to know all about the phone

How/Where to get the phone in Bangalore -

Enquired at 4 shops Within a 500 m range near Forum, Koramangala ( MobileNxt at Croma, Sangeetha Mobiles at Forum, Global Access and The Mobile Store on 80 ft Road, Koramangala ). The price difference was in the range of Rs.3,500!
The Mobile Store offered the best price, the salesman was very good, patient and knowledgeable about the product. MobileNxt and Global Access were hopeless and clueless (quoting a price of more than Rs.2,000 than your immediate neighbour proves that). Well, the best part was that they didnt even have the phone with them! Mhmmm...that explains it!

About the phone -

1.Look & Feel -

It is a very pleasant looking phone, well designed.Just 3 buttons/keys on the front and that makes it look quite good. The screen is very impressive and has good clarity.Just the right curves to make it instantly likeable. Most shops seem to have only the black model available. Would have liked to see the other colours as well.

2.Features -

WiFi ( I like this on smartphones/mobile devices, ever since I hooked up with iPod Touch ), Bluetooth, 2MP camera, Tri-band. Setting up the WiFi was fairly simple.

Runs on Win Mobile 6 and the box includes 1GB micro SD. It has Touch Flow, which is gesture sensitive and is a great feature.

The virtual keyboard is pretty good and it was quite easy, typing in messages for SMS. Something, I was initially sceptic about.

Camera is quite decent while lacking natural colours. It records videos in MP4 format and that is quite cool! I definitely think it is better than the iphone camera.

If you dont use the WiFi for long, it has got a great battery life. This is the case with any other smartphone and hence not an issue that is specific to HTC Touch.

3.Irritants -

In order to maintain a sleek look, they have designed very thin slots along the length on the sides. It is in the middle of the chrome strip. This is very inconvenient and is a pain if you need to do it often. You would need longer nails or a pin (and the associated worry that you might scratch the surface). It was not easy, for sure and I had a tough time doing it.

The browser doesnt support javascript and hence couldn't browse many sites. The one solution would be to download opera browser and install it on the phone. Looks like HTC was aware of it and they have included it for the new HTC Diamond.

4.Packaging -

Packaging and accessories make this more attractive. A great looking black box and good quality of handsfree, makes one happy. They provide an extra stylus which is very handy and a thoughtful gesture.

Value For Money - 9/10

Ease of use - 8/10

Features, Utility - 8/10

Would I recommend it? - YES!

This week's episode of Gossip Girl features Jenny holding an HTC Touch. And we know that any gadget appearing on GG is always an 'in' thing.

I remember Jenny used to have a pink Moto Razr in the previous season... which, by the way, suits her kikay personality. So being caught holding an HTC Touch is really interesting. The white gadget somehow portrays a tech savvy, fashionista persona... and it's making me want to own one!

Oh, and I just remembered, this phone was also the one used by Jerry Shaw in Eagle Eye, well the black version of course! Remember the scene when Jerry was in the train and the phone of the sleeping guy across him rang? This is the ringing phone!

I saw the green version of this handset, wonderfully named as Wasabi Green, and it's currently my eye candy! It boasts the TouchFLO technology, much like the function offered by iPhone, and runs on Windows Mobile. This has wifi capability and all other great things packed conveniently in this tiny gadget. :D

I mean, it's just nice to see a Taiwan handset brand to make it big time. I'm tired of seeing Motorola, Nokia, LG, and Blackberry... I guess it's time for an Asian brand to hit it out there.

Run.

HTC Libra 100: HTC S720, HTC 5800, Verizon SMT5800 / XV5800,
HTC Titan 100: Verizon XV6800, HTC/PPC 6800, HTC P4000
HTC Vogue 100: HTC Touch P3050
HTC Vogue: Verizon Touch XV6900
HTC Iris 100: HTC S640
HTC Touch Diamond

Clash of the 'bling phone' titans - missing the mark

Last year, Apple released the iPhone on the ATT network to much criticism and acclaim for the design

Last year, Apple released the iPhone on the ATT network to much criticism and acclaim for the design and interface. This year, Google launched their iPhone competitor - the Android based phone HTC G1 on the T-Mobile network. Both of these devices are great when it comes to playing media, surfing the web, and looking cool. But there is a major glaring flaw plaguing each of these devices.

Neither device, the iPhone or the Android phone, is geared towards corporate e-mail - the primary application for which most Smartphones/PDAs are purchased for. While the Android has a slide out keyboard, which makes typing relatively easy, it doesn't support Microsoft Exchange push e-mail. And the iPhone, which has recently added Microsoft Exchange push capability, has nothing but an on-screen keyboard which makes it impractical for quickly typing e-mails. In fact, the iPhone's issue is so great that one can often see frustrated iPhone users, at airports or coffee shops, jabbing angrily at the screen trying to get their messages entered.

So, the question comes up: What do I do if I want a device that is 'cool' like the iPhone or the Android but also handles my corporate e-mail without any cumbersome issues? The answer, unfortunately, is to wait a little longer.

The two most promising devices that are likely to combine the 'cool' with the functional are the HTC Touch Pro and the BlackBerry Thunder. Both devices have touchscreens, and a multitude of media features. The HTC Touch has a slide out keyboard making it easy to type e-mails on, and because it is a Windows Mobile based device it supports your Exchange push e-mail. The BlackBerry Thunder, on the other hand, gets rid of the venerable physical keyboard that BlackBerry has been known for and replaces it with an on-screen keyboard that reviewers say, unlike the iPhone, actually works well. But, you will have to wait just a bit for the HTC Touch, due out any day in the U.S. market, and a little longer for the BlackBerry Thunder which is slated for Q4 2008.

Until devices such as these become available, I can only suggest that business users stick with their Motorla Qs, Palm Treo's or BlackBerry devices.

Today, T-Mobile, Google, and HTC officially announced the HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1, a beautiful little

Today, T-Mobile, Google, and HTC officially announced the HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1, a beautiful little device that does everything the iPhone does, but cheaper, and in some cases, much better.

After watching endless videos about it, I can see that a phone like this will be a big competitor in the comming months. Available in white and black, the G1 is run on a revolutionar little operating system called Android, an open source project by Google that'll assure safety, friendliness, and extendability. The phone is made by the High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC), who, for the last year and a half or so has been making touch screen phones for the masses. Lately, their products have been exceeding the iPhone more and more, with the release of the Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, and the Touch HD [all of which, by the way, have greater resolution than a the standard non-HD television, double that of the iPhone].

Getting back on subject (bear with me, I drift away from the subject a lot when mindlessly typing away), the new G1 will be available through T-Mobile for $179 [if you're already a customer] with a contract extension, or for $399 by itself [T-Mobile 3G plans go from $25-35]. One advantage it has over the iPhone is the fact that it has a full, physical QWERTY keyboard. The one problem I have with the G1 is that there's no 3.5mm earphone jack

Personally, the phone and everything will be perfect for me. I'm a T-Mobile customer, I love open source things, I probably have $200 in my pocket right now, and I happen to live in one of the cities you must live within 5 miles from to buy one (Orlando, Florida FTW!)

So stick it to Apple and get an HTC G1!

[by the way, not too keen on the Samsung Instinct; too cheap-looking]
