It was over a decade ago when I got my first broadband connection — by today’s compariso

It was over a decade ago when I got my first broadband connection -- by today's comparison a very slow DSL connection from my then-local provider, Verizon Communications, which went by the name of Bell Atlantic. At $60 a month (not including the cost of the modem), the service, which got around 256 Kbps on a good day (vs. top speed of up to 640 kbps), was really a novelty.

With the exception of many who worked in New York's Silicon Alley, not many cared about the expensive, always-on connection. Being a broadband nerd of sorts, I couldn't care less about the price tag; I couldn't wait to pay more to get more bandwidth.

I am reminded of that moment -- of that thrill -- of experiencing the web without delays, thanks to the new iPhone and its ability to connect to the 3G network. I already can't wait for AT&T to upgrade their network from HSDPA to HSPA to HSPA+ to LTE so we can get faster and faster broadband.

For now, the best we can get on the iPhone 3G is HSDPA, which has a theoretical download speed of between 400 and 700 Kbps, though Apple on it site says it's going to be 2.4x the speed of EDGE - about 100 Kbps. Still, I am going to go out on the limb and mark July 11 down as a red-letter day for 3G wireless.

Don't get me wrong -- it isn't the day 3G wireless was first introduced in the U.S. Neither is iPhone the first 3G phone. I have had 3G phones, USB and PC Card modems for a while now. It isn't the first time I have used 3G broadband; I am on old hand at using EVDO to connect my laptop to the web, or at connecting my Nokia e61 to a 3G network whenever I am in Europe, or using the Nokia N95 to snap-and-share photos and videos via one of the life-streaming services.

Yet this is the first time that a 3G connection on a non-computer device actually feels like a broadband connection. "This device is a true game-changer. Why? The immediacy of the data at your fingertips is huge. Imagine, looking up anything, anywhere," is how AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega told me in a chat earlier this year. In the U.S. especially, the iPhone is going to have a major impact, mostly because are a PC-centric society constantly search for web-like experiences. (So far, most of the carriers have made their money off 3G computer connections. I am wondering how the iPhone impacts (or not) 3G usage in Europe.)

I received the new iPhone 3G on Friday, and since then I have been tinkering around it -- a lot. My first (and perhaps lasting) impression: The 3G speed is quite addictive and it doesn't take long to slowly start switching your daily compute tasks to this device instead of reaching for your computer.

A lot of that is because the iPhone has a generous screen and is very easy to use, but more importantly it has a more than adequate browser, making it an ideal candidate for being a "cloud client." All that was missing was a fast-enough connection that helped "off-source" some (or, in the case of others, many) tasks from their computers.

The briskness with which I can surf web pages means it has become easy to keep and eye on this and our other network blogs. The email shows up in the inbox as quickly as on my desktop. NetNewsWire's iPhone App has already become my preferred way to read RSS. Its ability to sync with the desktop client over the web only adds to its utility. Facebook on the iPhone is almost infinitely more usable than its web counterpart. (John Markoff is marveling at the pocket-sized experience as well.)

Truphone's new iPhone app makes it easy to place VoIP calls on the iPhone, thereby making it less necessary for me to fire up the old computer to call mom. It sure would be nice to see a Skype client for iPhone. I am sure that over a period of time other habits will form -- including watching YouTube videos - which just got bearable, thanks to a faster connection.

More importantly, 3G has freed me up from thinking about the availability of a Wi-Fi connection. Of course, if everyone else gets into the same habit, as I suspect they will, this is going to put some stress on AT&T's 3G Network.

Going back to the early days of broadband, the thrill of doing mundane web tasks faster and without tying up a phone line didn't seem as great in the beginning, but acted as a spark for the broadband revolution. It wasn't till Shawn Fanning unleashed Napster that broadband demand took off, eventually leading to innovations like Skype, YouTube & Facebook.

I think that from that perspective, the iPhone 3G is going to provide a similar spark for wireless broadband. Just like touch and big screens are becoming increasingly commonplace in high-end phones, over the next 12 months I wouldn't be surprised to find mobile device makers focusing heavily on the Internet, all while waiting for the elusive killer app, which none has seen just yet. Despite the tight control of carriers on wireless spectrum, this could be the start of a new wireless wave.

I've recently acquired a virtually new-in-the-box and never booted Vulcan FlipStart with Windows XP and EVDO! The only item missing appears to be the recovery disc(s), which I can live without thanks to Acronis True Image.

Take a look at all the pictures!

Yes I know, I'm about a year late to the party, and I've been pretty critical about the Flipstart in the past, calling it the ugly duckling and the zombie handtop. So why now?

Well a lot of things have changed in a year:
- I retired my beloved OQO Model 02 with HSDPA, selling it before it lost too much value
- Vulcan lowered the price of the FlipStart to $699, and then stopped selling it altogether

The tipping point was my Vulcan FlipStart HSDPA mod. The brave soul who volunteered his device for the hacking was experiencing some hardware problems which I was only able to resolve thanks to the outstanding assistance I received from Vulcan customer support. Being able to swap EVDO with HSDPA without reaching for my soldering iron was the icing on the cake...

So I started looking for a used FlipStart for further hacking. And for the record, I still think the FlipStart is aesthetically challenged :)

Hey everyone!

Hey everyone!

Have you seen the t-mobile adverts where people are happy, and connected and roll down streets in a big ball of human mass, and the sun is shining and the bees are singing and everything is fucking fantastic?

Today I switched to them, after being on Virgin Mobile for almost eight years. Virgin were great, albeit expensive. I wanted something cheaper, and something more catered for my needs, so I went to T-Mobile, who are great for the internet apparently. Hell, 50p a day on a cell phone? That's great!

Anyway, I signed up, bought a sim and £10 worth of credit and paid for 5 days worth of internet. After getting the preliminary set up done, I was looking forward to Plurking, Twittering and Facebooking on holiday.

Apparently, T-Mobile wanted to be the guardians of the Internet, as they have decided that they must filter out all content that is unmoderated. That includes... Well... The fun stuff.

The fact that T-Mobile feels the need to invent responsibilities such as protecting under 18's from sites that they use on a regular basis, such as Myspace and Facebook is absurd, and only seeks to alienate their young customer base.

T-Mobile, you really need to learn how to fail less.

Regards,

Jakarta, 17 Juli 2008

Kepada Yth,
Customer Support department
PT. Telekomunikasi Selular Indonesia
Di Jakarta

CC: Seluruh pemegang saham PT.Telkomsel
Seluruh Direksi PT. Telkomsel
Seluruh Kadiv/Kadept PT. Telkomsel
Seluruh Pegawai PT.

There is a new version of 3G Watcher (R2.6.0.3 build 1701) as part of the large WWAN download (as usual, they haven't updated the posted date... sigh)

There is a new BIOS version (dated 05/30/08 but with posted date of 07/01/08)

I'll check out the 3G Watcher, but I'm happy with my older (all wireless in tablet mode) BIOS. If anyone applies it, please let us know your results.

I've updated the information on the Vista Drivers page.

Unless you’ve been cooped up in a hole for the past 30+ days, it’s hard to miss the ne

Unless you've been cooped up in a hole for the past 30+ days, it's hard to miss the news about the release of the 3G iphone, announced on June 9th at the WWDC08, and debuted yesterday, July 11th, 2008.

Having been following the 3G iPhone rumors since the beginning of 2008, I had high hopes tuning into Steve Job's WWDC08 keynote focusing mainly on the 3G iPhone, and ended up much disappointed. It seems that Apple spent most of its effort on the software side of changes (native SDK, App Store, Enterprise integration) and added just 2 main features hardware wise - UMTS, so that it can be called "3G", and GPS - neither of which can be considered as "innovative" in today's handset market.

A list of features still on the wish list:

Camera

still 2.0MP with fixed focus, when many of today's camera phones are easily doing at least 3.2MP with auto focus and digital zoom (check out Sony Ericsson's K800i).

no front facing camera and no video telephony. Yes, I know VT's image quality sucks because it uses 64kbps CSD bearer, but it's a freebie that comes as part of the 3G technology. Because of Apple's explicit ban on VOIP type of 3rd-party applications (to protect carriers' voice revenue), implementing a custom video telephony over IP solution is out of the question. Even if such an application exists, the lack of front-facing camera will make it a challenge to use (small mirror sales will go up maybe). Yet I can't decide whether to blame the carriers or Apple for this. Unlike our lucky friends in Europe and Asia, the exclusive 3G iPhone carrier in U.S. - AT&T - does not offer the VT feature (whether it's a network infrastructure limitation or they just turned the feature off, I don't know). Even if Apple could add this feature to the 3G iPhone, I'd imagine them being pressured by AT&T to remove it so that it won't "highlight" the limitation of the carrier. I wonder how the 3G iPhone will compete in Europe and Japan where pretty much all 3G handsets are capable of VT.

Accelerometer - I wouldn't complain about it had I not seen the Android prototype being demoed during Google IO 2008 keynote on the same Moscone West stage just 2 weeks prior to the WWDC08. In addition to an accelerometer, the Android prototype (which is an HTC I believe) added a digital compass that allows applications to do some really cool things.

Bluetooth - still just the handsfree profile (yeah, like I want to be caught dead with this blue-flashing thing plastered on my ear like a cyborg). What I really want is the serial port profile. I guess this is more of a software feature, one I don't think Apple will ever add because of how people will use it. For me, I will connect the iPhone to a $50 bluetooth GPS receiver and voila I have an iPhone with GPS. Why do I want to do that when the 3G iPhone already includes GPS? Well, like I said, it's a software feature, the new 2.0 firmware runs on both 2G and 3G iPhones, and the 2G iPhone does not have GPS. Even with a built-in GPS, the 3G iPhone can still benefit from an external GPS (I'll explain why later). If I can surf over WiFi and get GPS over bluetooth, I will hang on to my 2G iPhone and never need to upgrade (at least to the current 3G iPhone) - something Apple does not want to happen.

Storage - a given. Who doesn't want more?

No tethered mode - I want to be able to use my iPhone as a modem and enjoy the fast 3G network from my laptop on the go, Please!!!

Now let's take a look at the 2 features that did get added - 3G and GPS, but not before I sidetrack a little bit.

I was not a Mac fan until I got involved in iPhone development (yes, I do like my Mac and OS X, even a little more than Linux - can't believe I said that). So the WWDC08 keynote is the first full length presentation I watched given by Steve Jobs, a legendary presenter. Yet I was a bit put off by the misleading words and the lack of technical spec when he introduced the 3G iPhone. To this day I still hear people say that "the 3G iphone is thinner than the old iPhone", and I can't help but point out to them that the 3G iPhone is actually thicker, not thinner, by 0.02 inch, and that what Steve Jobs said, when he put up the picture of the new iPhone's profile, was "it's even thinner at the edges". Is Steve misleading or just a "glass half full" type of guy?

Going back to the main topics.

Although not an Apple innovation, 3G speed is definitely an exciting feature. The second frequent thing I hear people talk about is that the "3G iPhone is at least twice as fast as 2G and approaching Wi-Fi", because, well, that's what Steve said at the keynote. Steve Jobs presented the results of the 3G iPhone downloading the same page over EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi, taking 59 sec, 21 sec and 17 sec, respectively, and from there draw the conclusion that 3G speed is 2.8x faster than EDGE and is approaching Wi-Fi. Well, depending on the link quality of the EDGE and 3G connections, the speed improvement can range from 1.6x to 30x. Between 3G and Wi-Fi (802.11b), the difference can range from 28x slower to only 1.5x slower. This is because data speed over EDGE can range from ~40kbps to ~240kbps for a typical 4-timeslot downlink configuration depending on the MCS class which is determined by the radio quality (most people get ~100kbps). Speed over 3G range from max non-HSDPA speed of 384kbps to max HSDPA speeds of 1.4M or 3.6M or 7.2M or more bits per second depending on handset's capability. So in addition to showing page download results, I wish Steve could have mentioned the technical spec and the capability of the 3G iPhone will be immediately apparent. It is rumored that iPhone 3G uses the Infineon PMB 8878 chipset capable of up to 7.2Mbps downlink. If that's true, it blows competitors like Nokia N95 out of the water as the latter is only a Cat 6 (3.6Mbps). I wonder the reason for Apple's overly modest statement on its website that the 3G iPhone is "Twice as fast, Half the price" and not blowing the trumpet on its 7.2Mbps CAPABILITY is, again, not to publicly humiliate AT&T, because AT&T's 3G network - the only nation-wide 3G network in US - is only capable of doing up to 1.4Mbps HSDPA. Again, while our friends in Europe and Asia will be able to enjoy the 3G iPhone's full HSDPA capability, people here in US are stuck with the pathetic AT&T's infrastructure. Apple and AT&T's strategy is "you won't miss what you don't know you're missing." Once upon a time US has the best of things in the world. Now in terms of telecom US is more like a third-world country.

So the 3G speed part kinda sucks here in US, leaving GPS as the only "shining point" of the new phone. After reading that the GPS feature on 3G iPhone is going to be A-GPS about a month ago (A for assisted), I was still hoping that it will really be a standalone GPS capable of using cellular network's assistance to get a faster location fix, and in poor satellite visibility (e.g., indoors), like certain A-GPS mobiles do; and that when there's no network assistance (e.g. when you are lost in the desert with no cell coverage), the GPS unit is still able to acquire its position, albeit taking longer. But judging from recent comments from Apple and reviews from early 3G iPhone adopters - that "the GPS chip is too weak to provide turn-by-turn navigation", "can't compete with standalone GPS" - I speculate that the type of A-GPS in the 3G iPhone is really mobile-assisted GPS, where the mobile only performs satellite measurements based on assistance data from the network, and let the network calculate where the mobile is. Compared to the other form of A-GPS, namely network-assisted GPS where mobile performs both satellite measurements and location calculation based on network assistance data, and the full standalone GPS, mobile-assisted GPS is the least taxing on mobile's capability and resource, allowing lower-end mobiles with weaker GPS receiver and less CPU power to still be able to get its location. Of course, this comes at a cost of extra delay in getting the location result. If the mobile is traveling at a high speed, by the time mobile sends the satellite measurements to the network and the network finishes calculation of the location result and sends it back, the mobile would have moved away significantly, which will make turn-by-turn navigation very hard. If the bluetooth serial port profile is allowed, then the 3G iPhone can optionally pair with a standalone GPS, bypassing the weak built-in GPS receiver.

To summarize, 3G, not an innovation - comes with changing to 3G chipset; HSDPA 7.2Mbps (speculation), impressive and can be considered innovative, yet the speed is unachievable in US yet. A-GPS, weakest kind, won't work without cellular network. Other hardware, no improvement.

How attractive is the 3G iPhone? You decide.

Yesterday was a very crazy day in the mobile telecommunications world. The long awaited iPhone by Apple is finally released in the Great White North (Canada). Despite the backlash of people who criticized Rogers' handling of the proposed iPhone plan structure and Rogers' request to ring in a promotional offer, people are quite excited to have this wonderful gadget. More on the protest of the plan structure can be founded on this post.

People have waited outside for days - in the rough weather and through new heights so they can finally get a hand of this device. Walking to have lunch one day, I saw a very few people who were standing outside a Rogers Video store trying to get their hands of the device. As a result some of the people are long gone, already got hands of the device.

Hours later, I was in Scarborough Town Centre getting a test drive of the wonderful device. It's a very cool device and the similiarities between the iPhone and the iPod touch are amazing.

People all across the nation waited long and hard for the iPhone, but many decided not to sink in because the provider lacks an "unlimited" data plan. As a result many people decide to protest the phone's release. For this occasion, competitors Bell and Telus decided to release two new phones both with unlimited data plans known as the Samsung Instinct and the HTC Touch Diamond respectively.

Despite a minor glitch in Rogers' activation system which was quickly fixed and resolved by technicians, people are really excited with joy with this wonderful device. Personally, I would consider getting an "unlocked" iPhone and probably stick with a pay-as-you-go plan (Right now, I'm with Telus and I share minutes with my older sister's monthly plan). Here are some videos of the iPhone launch:

Video #1:

To finish this blog off, I'm leaving you a music video from a band called The Moffatts. The song is called "Crazy". The reason that I choosed this video is that people are getting so crazy with the iPhone! Enjoy. Also, I'm also leaving you another music video, this time by a band called The Johnstones. Their song is called "gone for a long time".

As many people are protesting against Rogers about their recently-unveiled cell phone plan structure for their highly anticipated iPhone, another competitor Bell decides to fight off against the iPhone by unveiling a new cell phone called the Samsung Instinct. The good things about the Samsung Instinct is that the plan includes totally unlimited data usuage as opposed to the 400MB data usage imposed by Rogers. Telus, another company is also launching a new cell phone and just like Bell, the plan includes totally unlimited data usage.

The phone that Bell will be releasing is the Samsung Instinct. Telus on the other hand will be releasing the HTC Touch Diamond.

Bell's unlimited internet access plan will cost $10 CDN per month and the Samsung Instinct will be selling for less that $150. Telus on the other hand will be offering the same thing, just like Bell - with a few differences:

Telus will offer an unlimited e-mail plan for $15 CDN per month or $30 CDN per month for e-mail, internet and instant messaging.

In other news, a website called oilchange.com has somewhat acquired the highly popular website ruinediphone.com. No word on why and how the ruinediphone website has been acquired. As for the recently concluded wireless spectrum auction in Canada, it is expect by next year, new carriers will be up and running and the competition will be invigoriously increased to reduce cell phone rates in half. Will it work? We'll see.

Remember in my last posting that what if Paul Gigliotti & Dave Thomson (of the now defunct band called "Wave") along with Lee Alsop and Ben Dunk (their friends) were to get the iPhone and wonder if they don't understand about Rogers (or Fido's) data plans were. Chances are they would end up like the guy who has a whopping $85,000CDN phone bill! As the old saying goes, things happen. The same thing will go for my friends Tarin, Laura, Jenny, Stacy P., Meghan and my trusted friend Bobby F. They will weigh in with the iPhone.

I guess their future won't be friendly after all.

1. Primary IDE channel

2. Secondary IDE channel

3. VIA Bus Master IDE controller (tergantung mainboard anda)

Setting "standard" ketiga hardware tersebut, caranya :

Pada Primary IDE channel Klik kanan ==> Update Drivers... ==> pada Hardware Update Wizard, pilih Install form a list or spesific location (Advanced) ==> Klik Next ==> pilih Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, kemudian klik Next ==> Klik Standard IDE/ESDI Hardisk Controller, Klik Next ==> Finish

After the announcement that the iPhone is finally coming to Canada, many consumers began to start protesting against the plans that Rogers and Fido have implemented. There was also a speculation that if you suddenly want to break out of your iPhone for a number of time, you will be charge a maximum of $1100CDN. Details on this can be founded at this link, although the information has been corrected after the blog posting have been issued. Many people decided to protest against Rogers and Fido's final plan structure, while others decided to go to the extreme by signing a petition located at www.ruinediphone.com (which at this time of blog posting, closed down without notice but still active). One blogger decided to post his/her views about the iPhone petition and telling the word to Mr. Ted Rogers and Sir Steve Jobs about the unfair and unconstitutional pricing.

Currently, there is no "real" competition from among many wireless carriers in Canada unlike the U.S or A. There are three dominant players in the Canadian Wireless Market: Rogers, Telus and Bell. There are some other providers out there, but the majority of these so-called MVNO's (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) run on one of the big players' networks. For example Virgin Mobile and Solo Mobile run on Bell Mobility's network, while Koodo runs on Telus' network. An auction is currently underway to see who will the next national carrier in the wireless industry.

Although no official details are not set up after the auction has ended, we can say that the new entrants will include the following:

Globalive (known for it's Yak brand) encompasses on building a nationwide network.

Shaw will be restricted to Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg)

Quebecor will be restricted in La Belle Province (that's the nickname for Quebec, FYI)

Bragg Communications (aka Eastlink) will operate in Atlantic Canada

Data AV (or DAVE) will be in the urban-centric chokehold in Canada.

As for the big three players, Bell, Telus and Rogers are the majority of holding the big licences. Rogers scored 52 licences worth $929 Million CDN, Bell holds at 54 licences worth $719 Million CDN and Telus holds 56 licences worth $855.3 Million CDN. It's highly likely that Bell and Telus will team up to build and deploy a 3G HSPA/GSM network all across Canada, eventually marking the demise of CDMA - the commonly used cell phone technology in North America.

As for the iPhone, there are some rumours that the iPhone will trim cell phone rates in half. We'll just have to wait and see. What if Paul Gigliotti and Dave Thomson from the now-defunct band called "Wave" were to shoot for an ad campaign for Data AV? I can imagine if my friends Tarin, Laura and Jenny were to see those guys in a TV commercial and they want to get the phones supplied by DAVE. The rest is up to them.

Udah hampir dua minggu make koneksi internet punya Telkomsel ini.

Prosesnya mayan cepet, nelpon orang Tselnya, siangnya dia dateng bawa formulir plus SPG –slurp cantik euy- besoknya dateng lagi bwt ngambil formulir, besoknya lagi modem dateng beserta nomor Halo. Langsung di tes dan jalan.

Ini hasil tes pertama,

Sebagai informasi, saya ngambil paket yang 256. Lokasi saya di makassar, sinyal HSDPA dah mayan lah di sini. Di kosan ama di kantor dapet fullbar, wuzzzz… Kalo bwt download mayan lah cukup memuaskan, apalagi browsing, wuzzz dah.

Cuma bwt bnetan agak ngeleg, ping paling kecil selama ini dapet sekitar 160an –HSDPA- bisa dapet 1000an kalo sinyal tiba-tiba pindah ke UMTS, sedihnya. Cuma sayangnya belakangan malem-malem suka drop speednya.

Any time any where, as long as your area is covered by Tsel signal -secara sinyal Tsel dimana-mana-

Informasi selengkapnya langsung kesini aja "Tsel Hot Offering".
