Two politically oriented films have been released just before the election. One has an obvious liberal bias, the other an obvious conservative bias. Interestingly, these are entertainment films, not documentaries along the lines of "Farenheit 9/11" or the equally slanted ABC miniseries "The Path to 9/11"--which means their success will be determined as much by box office dollars as by political influence.

Oliver Stone, who has done some very good films ("Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Wall Street," "World Trade Center") and some bad history ("JFK" and "Nixon"), tells Maxim that his latest film, "W," is being released this month not to influence the election but "because Bush is still around." He also questions his potential influence: "I did three Vietnam movies, and what good did they do? People still lined up in support of the Iraq War. People don't remember. It shows you the futility of what we do."

The other film is largely an attack on Michael Moore, the creator of "Farenheit 9/11" and "Sicko." The new film, "An American Carol," is produced by another well-known filmmaker, David Zucker ("Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun," from back in the day when we thought O.J. Simpson was funny). Zucker, who in 2004 produced anti-John Kerry ads, and who in an interview with the neoconservative Weekly Standard compares Barack Obama to "a really clever virus who adapts"--says he hopes his film will persuade people to vote against Obama.

That seems unlikely. In fact, neither film is doing particularly well, despite the unpopularity of President George W. Bush or the heavy promotion on Fox News for "An American Carol."

Early reviews of "W" from Variety (an "unusual and inescapably interesting" movie that "feels like a rough draft of a film it might behoove him to remake in 10 or 15 years") and Hollywood Reporter ("a bold but imperfect film about an imperfect man") are obviously mixed. And it seems to me late-night TV hosts have skewered the president pretty thoroughly. Besides, watching the real Bush flounder is bad enough--and no longer particularly funny, considering the state of the nation thanks to the Iraq War and the economy.

Of course conservatives quickly and ludicrously complained that liberal bias and "ticket fraud" (?!) were keeping "An American Carol" from doing well, but judging by the preview, I suspect that the primary problem is the combination of unsubtle political commentary combined with even less subtle juvenile slapstick humor. It is notable that the filmmakers refused to release the film for critics, usually a sure sign that the filmmakers know they have a dud on their hands (though in this case they spun it as a defense against liberally biased critics).

It's difficult to imagine whom "An American Carol" is trying to reach. After all, most of the college-age males that the preview seems to want to engage likely will turn to something equally goofy, but which also offers the prospect of nudity.

Young people look for Adam Sandler and David Spade, not Kelsey Grammar and Dennis Hopper, and for Angelina Jolie rather than her father, Jon Voight. And even moviegoers who like Kevin Farley, the film's star, want to laugh with their lovable losers, not at those losers, and they want to see their heroes win in the end. That doesn't happen here. Instead--ironic spoiler alert--the end of the film apparently has the character intending to do a new, more accurate version of "JFK."

Older audiences need a stronger reason to go watch a film than do older audiences, and I can't see Farley being such a reason. The film is broadly obvious--and therefore uninspiring--in its intent, and apparently lazy in execution. And anyone who wants to see Bill O'Reilly acting stupid can do so five nights a week on television; there is little reason to pay 8 or 10 bucks to do so.

This won't be an election turned by film fiction, or even by based-on-a-true-story depictions offered in movies (or in political ads, for that matter). The fact that soon perhaps no one will be able to afford to go the movies, anyway (though escapist entertainment films were popular during Depression), will play a much bigger role in the probably election of Barack Obama. By then you'll probably be able to check out both of these films on video.

And if she cant get that from her parents, then why not from her mother's boyfriend, or her father's muscle-bound neighbor, Mr. Vuoso? Alicia Erians incandescent debut novel, Towelhead, will ring true for readers who remember the rarely poetic transition from childhood to young adulthood. Jasira is a creature of contradiction: both innocent (reading romantic intentions into the grossest displays of lust) and oddly clear-sighted, especially when it comes to the imbalance of power, and the things we do for love. When her mother exiles her to Houston to live with Jasira's strict, quick-to-anger Lebanese father, she quickly learns what aspects of herself to suppress in front of him. In private, however, she conducts her sexual awakening with all the false confidence that pop culture and her neighbor's Playboy magazines have provided.

Jasira tells her story with candor and glimmers of dark, unexpected humor--as when she describes her mother's boyfriend Barry's assistance in her personal grooming: "A week later, Barry broke down and told her the truth. That he had shaved me himself. That he had been shaving me for weeks. That he couldn't seem to stop shaving me." The freshness of her narrative voice sets Towelhead apart from the sentimental or purely harsh treatment of similar subject matter elsewhere, and makes the novel a promising follow-up to Erians well-regarded short story collection, The Brutal Language of Love. --Regina Marler

The year is 1991. When Jasira's mother finds out what has been going on between her boyfriend and her thirteen-year-old daughter, she has to make a choice -- and chooses to send Jasira off to Houston Texas, to live with her father. A remote disciplinarian prone to explosive rages, Jasira's father is unable to show his daughter the love she craves -- and far less able to handle her feelings about her changing body.

Bewildered by extremes of parental scrutiny and neglect, Jasira begins to look elsewhere for affection. Saddam Hussein has invaded Kuwait, and high school has become a lonely place for a "towelhead." When her father meets, and forbids her to see, her boyfriend, it becomes lonelier still. But there is always Mr. Vuoso -- a neighboring army reservist whose son Jasira babysits. Mr. Vuoso, as Jasira discovers, has an extensive collection of Playboy magazines. And he doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with Jasira's body at all.

Painfully funny, tender, and sexually charged, Towelhead is that rare thing: a gloriously readable novel unafraid to take risks. The story of a girl failed by her parents and by a conflicted America, Towelhead is an ultimately redemptive and moving work that none of us can afford to ignore.

No. I fondi mancanti sono quelli solitamente provenienti dagli sponsor. La manifestazione, come visto più volte nel nostro speciale sembra inutilmente policizzata, mettendo a rischio la buona riuscita della stessa.

I'm seeing more and more "webisode" television and it reminds me of my days in Los Angeles theater. It's up there, not as a staged experience or to even just entertain, but as a showcase. The creator is actually hoping someone will discover their series and put it on Network television. It's content for the wrong medium.

In 2002, when I co-produced the documentary series "Senior Year" with David Zeiger for PBS, I also produced a series at KCET, based on the television show for the web. At the time, our biggest challenge was how to make the series accessible and easy to view on home computers. I faced those same problems when I presented my political narrative webseries "Unconventional." These days we're past access and viewing issues, but I still haven't made a dime from any of my webisodes.

I continue to develop webisodes and related content. I've come to believe these two things:

1) that there is too much good free entertainment on the internet to expect anyone to pay for your webseries unless you're Joss Whedon.

Sorry, but someone sends me a link, I usually take a few moments to see what they've created, but not if I have to pay on my credit card or Paypal. I even hesitate if I have to enter my email and become a "member."

2) Unless you don't care about the costs (and this could be because you're putting up the webisodes hoping to eventually sell the series to television, you know as a "showcase" of your incredible talent) you've got to find an advertising sponsor ( see reason #1).

Now, that's not always easy, but take some time to figure out the marketing of your work. In a recent issue of Hollywood Reporter, IAC/InterActiveCorp CEO Barry Diller talks about the Web as being in just the early stages of its potential as an advertising medium. He doesn't see banner advertising having any real success and believes Video ads will be targeted and interrupt programming, as well as playing before and after the content. I'm seeing this happen more and more. I don't know about you, but as a filmmaker I hate a show being interrupted when I watch it on television and I certainly will hate it on the web, especially if it is my show. However, if that is what it takes to get the money to produce the programming, then I'll bite my lip and shut up.

So what's a solution. Well, after producing the live action elements to the upcoming EA video game "Need for Speed:Undercover," I'm convinced that it is a waste of money to make webisodes look and feel like short three-four minutes of regular television. Instead, it needs to be a whole different form of entertainment, a mixture of interactive gaming, virtual worlds, comedy, music, etc. The viewer needs to say, "wow, I couldn't have seen that being done any other way." You've got to want to stay at the web site and explore. Then the banner ad does work on the site because it is not ignored but becomes part of the experience. You can even have a commercial, not in the content of the video, but in the interactive content. This stuff requires a lot of thought and planning, but I'm seeing some great cross-over. I think it's evident on the Need for Speed and Which Road to Take sites.

We're developing some of these ideas (still very much in development) on the PressPlayMovie site, with ChanneledObsession.com as the marketing portion. On all these sites, things keep changing so the site becomes more interactive and worth a return visit. You build on that. It can't be just a new episode of television, it's got to be a bigger experience.

I'm very interested in any other thoughts on these ideas.

"Hollywood, stir yourself out of the depression. The making of motion pictures is just as important in the conduct of this war as is the production of ammunition, planes, or boats.

Your depression will depress your efforts, and such efforts will give no buildup to the morale of this nation, which is so necessary now. So, jump out of it! Throw that radio out of your office! Get back to work! It is more vital now than ever before. There is a greater burden on your shoulders; a greater demand for your creations.

Our warring nations MUST be entertained, and you MUST furnish that entertainment. And you cannot, and you will not furnish entertainment, if you stay glued to the radio or huddle in corners discussing the progress of the conflict. You have a job to do! Go do it, and do it better than you ever did before.

We heard a priest, speaking from his pulpit here last Sunday, say: "The influence of motion pictures is the greatest of all influences on the public's mind and in the daily conduct of that public's lives." You can be sure of that. Accordingly, your work is all-important now, Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood. Your task is as definite as is the job of the soldier in the field, the sailor in the ocean, or the bombardier in the skies. Your job is to keep the American chin up - to keep our people entertained. And keep them laughing.

Your job is to build up and help maintain a superb morale. All of you have a part. ALL of you have your work set out to do. Do it NOW and do it BETTER than you have ever done before, because it's just as important as any of the other major contributions toward ultimate victory!"

What amazes me is that this article was not written today, but rather 67 years ago on Tuesday, December 9, 1941 - Featured in the Hollywood Reporter 2 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor!

With the most ludicrous of rumors racing across entertainment news sites across the net, it is surely evident that Batman fans...quite possibly the world is on a hunger strike that has lasted for T minus July 18th days. Perhaps this widespread crisis is due to the fact that little to no news has come about on whether the Zeus of all "directing-dom", King Christopher Nolan has plans to make fanboys flood their pants for a third time by concocting another nirvana of a Batman masterpiece. Well, the news is, Mr. Nolan is currently on well-deserved vacation (if I knew where, I assure you I'd be knocking on his hotel room and persuading him right now) and won't be back for quite some time. However, we have received some ray of light from producer, Charles Roven. Here's what he had to say:

And Warners and Legendary are both interested in doing a third in the series, but all involved say it will be up to Nolan to come to them with a story and a plan.

"There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it," Roven says. "But it's really Chris' call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn't think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on."

For now, Nolan is taking a well-earned vacation.

Says Roven, "When he comes back, we will see how he feels."

So Mr. Nolan, I humbly ask you, please don't pull another "Prestige" on us. I'd really prefer not to be married already, cleaning up mine and my own kid's saliva while staring up at a movie screen in total bliss at "Batman 3" for the fifteenth time. Let's see one more! We will build golden altars across the world and offer animal sacrifices to the temple of Nolanism that will explode onto the world when they see a blinding light that makes the glorious luminescence that was "The Dark Knight" seem like pitch black.

PS To all gullible fans out there, if you want Cher to play Catwoman, Nolan will not hesitate to cast Cher as Catwoman as punishment for your ravenous curiosity and utter lack of patience. What can I say? Curiosity will kill the cat. Mwahahaha!

Can the "Dark Knight" Save IMAX?

Interesting article today from The Hollywood Reporter (see link below) on the impact The Dark Knight

Interesting article today from The Hollywood Reporter (see link below) on the impact The Dark Knight is having/may have on IMAX movie theatres.

The problem that IMAX has had is two-fold. 1) There aren't that many IMAX theatres around the country, and certainly nowhere near the number of normal projection cinemas. Tickets to an IMAX event are more costly as well, but its not a significant difference that would affect it as much as the lack of screens would. As the article states, there are about 160 IMAX screens in North America....but many of those are found in museums, aquariums and similar venues which are deemed unsuitable for a Hollywood release. The Dark Knight saw release on just 94 IMAX screens. While that kind of scarcity can keep screenings full and sold out, it definitely becomes a limiting factor when most people will just opt to go to their local multiplex.

2) Hollywood films are not filmed in IMAX and thus don't take real advantage of the benefits visually or audibly. There hasn't been a live action Hollywood release shot entirely in IMAX and so far only a few films like Journey to the Center of the Earth and Beowulf have made use of the 3D offerings in IMAX with any kind of success, and that has been moderate. So even when a big time film gets released in IMAX there isn't much of a differentiation between it and the one shown down at the local AMC. Until now.

Clocking in at 2.5 hours or so, the Dark Knight has on total about 30 minutes filmed on IMAX cameras a siginficant portion compared to other films. And given its popularity, it is just the type of film needed to get people lining up at the IMAX doors and demanding the type of experience that IMAX offers. This is definitely a step in the right direction. And as the article notes, at an average of 67,000 in sales PER screening the value for IMAX to have sold out shows is there. Those kinds of numbers will show studios that there is untapped profit to be made and in turn allow IMAX to reduce the production costs of using their cameras because of the additional revenue streams. A win win for Hollywood and for IMAX toward create a more engrossing cinematic experience.

Is the Dark Knight the shining savior that IMAX has been hoping for? No... Not every film that debuts with IMAX showings is going to be the kind of boon that The Dark Knight has been and there are still technical difficulties with the size, film time, and sound that comes with using an IMAX camera that need to all be figured out before they become more widely used for anything except for action or "high flying" sequences.

But...the Dark Knight definitely is a step in the right direction. So long as the momentum is continued. If future Hollywood blockbusters that are expected to draw crowds like Harry Potter, Ironman 2 or even the next Superman film embrace filming in IMAX then the medium will continue to grow and the number of screens across the country will grow as well. If not...well then The Dark Knight will exist merely as a blip on the radar...a momentary high point for IMAX who will again find themselves relegated to showing the latest "Under the Sea" documentary at your local aquarium.

AMC is allowing that the beginning of season 2 in 1962 is officially leaked, and has posted a 1962 trivia quiz on their Mad Men blog. (I scored 11/15).

As mentioned in our reporting on the New York Times article, JWT will have a ten-second advertisement inside the new DVD release. Here's an article about that, complete with cool picture, from Brandweek.

Media Bistro has an amusing take on George Lois and the Times Magazine article.

We confess that we watch each episode twice, once with the sound on and then again on mute, so as to better contemplate the stellar sets, vintage props, and bold-hued womenswear...

DVD Reviews abound! Why oh why didn't we get a review copy? Sniff. Why oh why haven't I got my contest prize yet? SNIFF! (I got a note from AMC on June 27 that my contest-prize DVD is in the mail. So yay. But sniff.)

Overwhelmingly positive reviews can be read at:

Hollywood Reporter did a roundtable (on June 3, but I didn't see it until hullaballoo pointed it out) of showrunners on how they dealt with the WGA strike and other things. Matt Weiner is one such showrunner.

Movie Web is thrilled with "10 new photos" of season 2. They all seem to be the ones we had a month ago. But maybe I'm confused, because no matter what I click, I only see 3 photos.

AfterEllen.com has a juicy article on Mad Men's women, including Carol, which mentions both the Times article and the DVD release.

Watching Peggy move from secretary to lead character Don Draper, to a woman with her own secretary at the end of the first series’ 13-episode run, was possibly one of the most satisfying arcs I have ever seen for a female character.

The article's author doesn't realize Joan was being snarky when she said Peggy would have a secretary. Nonetheless, the character arc is pretty damn amazing.

I live in suburban New York, but a Mad Men fan in LA reports seeing a Mad Men billboard. Yippee!

I'm not going to mention the gazillion articles that mention that Mad Men is officially on the Emmy shortlist, because it was enough weeding through them looking for real news. But it's worth noting that the TV Decoder of the New York Times has a column thinking over each show's chances.

A 16-page July Preview section of Entertainment Weekly mentions Mad Men's ratings war with Burn Notice, but doesn't give Mad Men its own page, which confuses me.

Tranne poi far seguire l'immediata e consueta smentita:
