XBOX 360 video not working

The other day something very terrible happened to me. As I was kicking ass on Call of Duty 4 on XBOX Live, the screen started flickering.

I haven't played COD4 in a few weeks so I thought I'd get back into the groove and do a free for all. Taking some time off did me good; I got back in the game and got 1st place with 22 kills. For those of you who haven't played this game, when you get shot up, the screen produces a red pulsating spherical shape indicating that you are bleeding to death. I took a closer look at the graphics and noticed that it looked like a cheap gif. Because I haven't played in a long time, I thought they added some new effect that I didn't know about.

After playing on a few other maps, I noticed the color degradation on the textures of the objects in the maps. This is when I started to panic. I took the game out of the tray, gave it a good wipe down and tired it again. No luck; it was still choppy.

After I picked up my heart, which at this point was falling out of my ass, I made sure all of my physical connections where secure; you never know, it could have been a loose wire, right?

I turned my 360 on and then it happened; sound with NO PICTURE! I was devastated. How was I supposed to spend my free time, reading?!

I called XBOX Live support to see if they can assist me in this terrible time. I went through all of their procedures:

Reset the display settings
Try inputting the video to a different channel on my TV
Use TV instead of HDTV (there is a switch in the video wire that interchanges between the two)
Use the HDMI cable instead of the regular video cable
Try it on a different TV

The conversation was short. The result; they'll send me a coffin box to put my 360 in so I can send it back for repairs. Great.

If this has happened to you, try all of the steps that I mentioned. You can also try these techniques.

If nothing works, get on the phone and call XBOX 360 Live support so you too can get a coffin box to send your XBOX in.

If you have, or are in the market for, a HDTV, Blu-ray player, or PS3, you've probably heard of HDMI. You just don't know what it is or if you need it. Now, if you've gone to Best Buy and gotten help from the friendly folks in the home theater area, then you've already been screwed and you can stop reading this article now. For the rest of you technologically challenged monkeys, hold on tight 'cause i'm about to save you a fist full of cash.

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a standard for connecting your audio/video equipment. One HDMI cable can carry your hi-def picture plus eight channels of audio (7.1 surround sound) plus a bunch of other tech stuff that would confuse your fragile little mind. Cool, that should help alleviate the rat's nest of wire behind your entertainment center. Just one cable from your player to your tv. Hey, does your tv have seven surround sound speakers and a sub woofer coming out of it? See what i'm saying? You didn't think this through too good did you?

So let's say that you do actually need an HDMI cable. Which one should you get? I mean they range in price from $4.99 to $259.00. Hold on to your hats, i'm going to break it down for you. You should get the cheapest one that's long enough to connect your gear. Now, if you intend to, say, hang your roommates' cat with your HDMI cable, then the more flimsy your cable, the higher your risk of damaging it. However, if you're just connecting your gear, you will not experience any difference between the $5 and the the $260 cables. I could explain why, but it would hurt your head. So just try the $5 cable first, and when you see that the picture and sound still kicks ass, send me a thank you note.

(Note: If you were an engineer with a company that sells $260 cables, you might argue this with me, talking about coincident degradation of the primary and inverse signals, blinking pixels, and whatnot. However, you'd be wrong--simply by definition of arguing with me, you'd be wrong.)

Firma Nikon oficjalnie przedstawiła swoją najnowsza cyfrową lustrzankę, D700. Aparat wyposażono w pełnoklatkowy, 12,1-megapikselowy sensor obrazu, taki sam jak w modelu D3.

W porównaniu z D3, w D700 obniżeniu uległa szybkość wykonywania zdjęć seryjnych. Posiada za to kilka istotnych funkcji: 51-punktowy pomiar ostrości z funkcja Focus Tracking, umożliwiającą śledzenie poruszających się obiektów. Poprawiono także działanie funkcji D-Lightning, która poprawia kontrast i zapisuje taką kopię niezależnie od oryginału. Matryca posiada funkcję autoczyszczenia. D700 wyposażono w port HDMI oraz obsługę GPS. Rozpiętość czułości ISO to 100 – 25600. Tak naprawdę, to D700 można określić jako D3 w mniejszej i lżejszej obudowie.

Nikon D700 będzie dostępny pod koniec lipca tego roku za 2999$.

I found this great product - if you do not go for HDMI over Cat5. This looks like a perfect solution.
The distance is a bit short - but I am sure there will be multiple new products on this category down the road.

Today I just received my 3 set of HDMI over Cat5 transmitter and receiver. I am now ready to connect the Game room to my HDMI Switch output.

The Cat5 -HDMI is such a great extension of the HDMI possibilities and for the first time I really enjoy that did install all the Cat5 wires in every room in our house. For IP i only use WiFI, so that Cat5 have got new life.

Until Wireless HDMI arrives of cause.

Nueva ATi All-In-Wonder HD

ATi siempre fue una de las mejores, al hablar de tarjetas de video con sintonizadores de TV. En el dia de hoy, AMD-ATi anuncia la nueva ATI All-In-Wonder HD. La tarjeta se basa en el chip RV635 (HD3650), fabricado en un proceso de 55nm, con una frecuencia de 725Mhz y 600Mhz (1.2Ghz Efectivos) para las memorias DDR2.

Para comunicarse con el resto del equipo, utiliza el puerto PCIE 2.0 y es la opcion perfecta para un HTPC, gracias a la integracion del UVD y la sintonizadora digital/analogica. Tambien dispone como un bracket que tiene salidas de video, entrada y salida de S-Video, y entrada de audio. Aparte de eso, la propia tarjeta tiene una salida DVI, otra HDMI y entrada de antena.

Queda claro, es la mejor opcion para tener en el HTPC. Aun no se saben los precios, pero AMD afirma que tendra un rendimiento de entre 5% y 15% superior a una HD3650 normal.

HD externo da Iomega com HDMI chega ao Brasil

Equipado com uma porta HDMI, o ScreenPlay HD Multimedia Drive, da Iomega, leva vídeos com resolução de 720p ou 1080i para a TV sem obrigar ninguém a queimar filmes, seriados e clipes em DVD.

A lista de formatos de vídeo suportados inclui DivX, XviD, AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 e VOB. Ele também reproduz música em MP3 e fotos em JPEG.

O ScreenPlay HD Multimedia Drive possui 500 GB de espaço em discos para armazenar esses e outros tipos de arquivo. A transferência de arquivos do PC é feita via USB 2.0.

Para ligar o drive à TV, além da saída HDMI, o usuário pode usar conexões vídeo componente ou vídeo composto. Ele vem ainda com um controle remoto para navegar pelo conteúdo do HD na tela da TV. Só faltou mesmo incluir o cabo HMDI (os outros fazem parte do pacote).

O HD externo mede 5,5 por 13 por 19,5 centímetros, pesa um quilo e custa 1199 reais.

Finalmente entramos na era da TV Digital aqui na Globo.com... Não! Não estamos transmitindo nenhum canal de TV Digital, e também não temos um decodificador recebendo o sinal digital do broadcast... É que essa semana foi instalado em nosso laboratório o Net DIGITAL HD MAX. Sua principal função é prover imagens com uma maior definição - HDTV, além de servir como um gravador digital integrado - DVR (mediante o pagamento de uma taxa "simbólica"). Dentre suas principais características técnicas, temos:

Resolução: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i;
Compressão: H.264;
Saídas de vídeo: Composto, S-Vídeo, Componente e HDMI;
Saídas de áudio: HDMI, S/PDIF e Stereo RCA;
Interfaces RJ-45 (Ethernet) e USB - desabilitadas, obviamente;
2 tuners DVB.

Os canais produzidos em HDTV dão um show, mas ainda deixam algo a desejar para olhos mais clínicos - percebem-se artefatos de borda facilmente, em função dos parâmetros de compressão utilizados. Com 2 tuners, é possível assistir ao conteúdo ao vivo de um canal, ou até mesmo gravado, enquanto se grava o ao vivo de outro canal. A decepção ficou por conta da ausência do padrão Full HD (resolução 1080p).

São boas as perspectivas para os nossos padrões de captura atuais, visto que, além de não precisarmos mais gastar rios de dinheiro com placas de capturas capazes de fazer o deinterlace - visto que temos a opção de receber sinais SD progressivos - também poderemos receber vídeos 100% digitais pela interface HDMI - sem ruídos e sem necessidades de conversão A/D - com placas de "baixo" custo como a Intensity Pro da BlackMagic Design. Isso, quando conseguimos algum workaround para o HDCP...

Além disso, começa a ficar mais fácil pensar em oferecer conteúdo "HD - widescreen - 16:9" diferenciado para conteúdos específicos produzidos originalmente em alta resoução.

Bild & Ljud i nya vardagsrummet

Jag är i full gång med att renovera vårt vardagsrum. Allt ska vara nytt, tak, golv, väggar och fönster. Som ni förstår så innebär detta mycket jobb och det är ju lika bra att göra allt ordentligt när man ändå är ingång. Så när det kommer till planeringen av kablar och placering av platt-tv, högtalare, htpc mm så är bara det en svårt och mödosamt arbete... åtminstone om man bor i ett äldre hus med udda planlösning och olika konstruktioner i väggarna.

Jag har påbörjat kabelkanaler så att jag kan dra kablar obehindrat i framtiden och även försökt tänka på eventuella ommöbleringar i framtiden.

Som det ser ut just nu kommer min HTPC stå placerad i ett annt rum än vardagsrummet och på så sätt få ett enlare rum att möblera. Risken blir att jag blir tvungen att använda HDMI repeters mellan TV - förstärkare och HTPC. Men det är det värd.

Jag ska försöka komma ihåg att ta lite bilder och lägga upp på bloggen så ni kan följa renoveringsarbetet.

Repose en paix HD DVD

Un petit article pour ne pas oublier ce support qui méritait mieux que le statut "mort né" !

Mon avis : Le HD DVD est officiellement mort... un support qui n'aura pas eu le temps de s'imposer face au Blu Ray de Sony, pourtant similaire en pratique mais à la technologie bien différente.

L'avantage du HD DVD made in Toshiba (je le rappel) était d'être facile à programmer : menu, interaction, programme, le développement autour de ce support était super simple car une évolution du DVD ; contrairement au Blu Ray made in Sony qui, comme d'habitude chez Sony, est très complexe à développer (c'est pareil pour les Playstation, parait que le développement sur ce support est d'une difficulté incroyable).

Bref, en tant que partisan de la cause HD DVD, ça m'attriste qu'un support aussi formidable doivent disparaitre ! Bon, en même temps, il est vrai que tel film sort uniquement en HD DVD et un autre uniquement en Blu Ray, c'était vraiment du foutage de gueule.

Ce que je ne comprend pas, vu le succès du DVD, l'appellation HD DVD sonnait bien à l'oreille du consommateur lambda, on note bien l'évolution de DVD vieillissant vers le chemin du HD... donc, pourquoi commercialement ça n'a pas passé ? Comprend pas... enfin, dommage, tout comme le MD (Mini-Disc) de Sony à l'époque, dont je suis toujours un utilisateur régulier, le HD DVD aura connu une courte durée de vie.

Va falloir que je me procure un lecteur HD DVD vu qu'il y aura de sacré prix à venir pour cause de destockage, et je vais me prendre un film ou deux pour le souvenir et puis le collector !

HD DVD NEVER DIE !

L'histoire du HD DVD (source : wikipedia) :

HD DVD est à la fois un support de vidéo numérique et un sigle de l’abréviation du terme anglais High Density Digital Versatile Disc traduit en français comme disque numérique polyvalent de haute densité. Tout comme pour le CD et le DVD, les données sont stockées sous forme numérique, sur un disque de 12 cm de diamètre. Le « HD » du nom fait également référence à la Haute définition, les films stockés sur ces disques pouvant effectivement être en HD.

Le HD DVD était le principal concurrent du Blu-ray, avec lequel il partage une partie de la technologie. Il est encouragé par Microsoft, NEC, et Intel. Il possède une densité de données plus faible, et pourrait (en principe) être moins cher à produire, ainsi que les périphériques de lecture et d’écriture, mais le 19 février 2008, Toshiba annonçait qu’il abandonnait cette technologie.

Historique :

Le 19 novembre 2003, le DVD Forum a choisi par huit voix contre six, que le HD DVD sera le format de la télévision haute définition sur disque optique remplaçant le DVD. Un appel à candidature avait été lancé pour devenir ce nouveau format. Lors de cette réunion, le projet déposé par Toshiba/MemoryTech, « Advanced Optical Disc » (AOD), a été choisi pour être le nouveau format HD DVD. Un des projets concurrent était le format du Blu-ray développé par Sony/Philips… Le 29 novembre 2004, quatre studios hollywoodiens ont annoncé leurs projets de support du HD DVD plutôt que le Blu-ray, bien que ce support ne soit pas exclusif : New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios et Warner Bros.

Le premier HD DVD français est sorti le 27 septembre 2006 (« Renaissance »). Quant au tout premier lecteur de salon, dont la sortie avait été repoussée sur le marché français pour officiellement des raisons techniques, il est disponible chez Toshiba depuis janvier 2007. Il s’agit du modèle HD E1, le moins cher (lancé au prix de 599 €) et il ne propose qu’une définition HD de 720p et 1080i. Un lecteur HD DVD capable de lire le « Full HD » de 1080p est disponible depuis fin février 2007. Il s’agit du modèle HD XE1 (lancé au prix de 899 €).

D’après ces statistiques, les proportions des ventes sur un an à la fin du mois d’août 2007 entre les deux concurrents seraient de 33 % pour le HD DVD contre 67 % pour le Blu-ray.

Le 21 août 2007, Paramount Pictures et Dreamworks ont décidé de délaisser le Blu-ray Disc pour supporter exclusivement le HD DVD (pour des raisons de « maturité technologique » inhérentes à ce format), rejoignant ainsi Universal Studios, également supporter exclusif du format HD DVD. Toutefois, de nombreux acteurs du marché soupçonnent Microsoft d’avoir versé à Paramount la somme de 100 millions de dollars pour leur faire choisir ce format[1].

Warner Bros annonça le 4 janvier 2008 l’exclusivité de leurs films au Blu-ray à partir de mai 2008. Le PDG du groupe, M. Meyer, a qualifié ce choix du Blu-ray au détriment du HD DVD de « décision stratégique tournée vers le long terme ».

Le 16 février 2008, Reuters se fait écho de la rumeur comme quoi le format HD DVD ne ferait plus objet de production d’équipement. Cela annoncerait la défaite du HD DVD face au format de Sony, le Blu-ray. Cette rumeur est sans doute liée à l’évènement de la veille lorsque Wal-Mart a indiqué suspendre la commercialisation des HD DVD ; mais aussi et surtout aux décisions des plus grandes maisons d’éditions de films de se tourner vers le Blu-ray.

Le 19 février 2008, lors d’une conférence de presse, Toshiba annonce la mort officielle de son format haute définition, le HD-DVD[2]. À cette date, Toshiba arrête toute campagne publicitaire visant à promouvoir son format HD-DVD et annonce l’arrêt de la production des platines et des médias HD-DVD pour fin mars 2008.

Caractéristiques :

Le HD DVD a une capacité par couche de 15 Go, soit un total de 30 Go avec un HD DVD double couche. Récemment, Toshiba a annoncé un disque expérimental triple couche, d’une capacité de 51 Go qui permettrait au disque d’être lu par une platine HD DVD ou DVD, en effet deux couches seraient utilisées pour le stockage du contenu haute définition, alors que la troisième serait gravée avec les caractéristiques d’un DVD standard. Un autre projet triple couche totalement haute définition permet quant à lui d’accueillir 51 Go de données, portant ainsi la capacité de chaque couche à 17 Go. La couche de protection (qui protège la couche de données) des disques HD DVD fait 0,6 mm d’épaisseur (la même que celle du DVD), alors que celle des disques Blu-ray est d’environ 0,1 mm d’épaisseur. Cette technologie utilise une diode laser fonctionnant à une longueur d’onde de 405 nm pour lire et écrire les données. Les 2 formats seront compatibles avec les DVDs et emploieront les mêmes techniques de compression : MPEG-2, Video Codec 1/VC1 (basé sur le format Microsoft Windows Media 9/WMV) et le format H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.

Le format HD DVD supporte un large choix de résolutions, de la plus basse (CIF et SDTV), toutes les résolutions supportées par le standard DVD, jusqu’aux formats HDTV suivants : 720p, 1080i et 1080p. Le HD DVD supporte les vidéos encodées en MPEG2 (format utilisé pour les DVDs) ainsi que les nouveaux formats VC-1 et AVC plus efficaces.

Les lecteurs HD DVD permettent la lecture des disques DVD en haute définition grâce à l’upscaling en 1080i/1080p.

Línea Sony Bravia S4000

Sony vuelve a ampliar su abultada línea de televisores Bravia con nuevos modelos que incorporan interesantes funcionalidades aún cuando se mantienen dentro de la gama media del mercado.

La línea Sony Bravia S4000 ofrece pantallas de tamaños que varían entre las 26 pulgadas y las 40 pulgadas, siendo ésta última la que incorpora mejores prestaciones. Aún con sus diferencias -el último modelo despliega imágenes Full HD (1920 x 1080 píxeles) y cuenta con el aval de la tecnología Bravia Engine 2, que mejora el contraste y la calidad del color, y de la tecnología Bravia Sync-, estos equipos comparten muchas características pues todos ellos ofrecen un ratio de contraste dinámico de 33000:1 (el de 40 pulgadas soporta el modo 24p) y disponen de 3 entradas HDMI.

En cuanto al resto de modelos de esta camada, se mantienen en una resolución HD Ready y disponen de la tecnología Bravia Engine. Además del modelo de 26 pulgadas, hay otros de 32 y 37 pulgadas.

JVC actualiza su gama Everio de videocamaras

JVC ha actualizado sus famosas videocámaras JVC Everio añadiendo dos nuevos modelos, la GZ-HD40 y la GZ-HD30, dos videocámaras cuyas principales características son la grabación en alta definición (FullHD) y sus discos duros para almacenar nuestras grabaciones.

Ambos modelos son prácticamente iguales, variando tan solo en la capacidad del disco duro de 1.8 pulgadas, ofreciendo 80GB la GZ-HD30 y 120GB la GZ-HD40.

Las nuevas JVC Everio tienen además un sensor de 2.68 Megapíxeles, una pantalla de 2.8 pulgadas, conexiones para HDMI, AV, componentes, i.LINK, auriculares y puerto mini USB.

Destacar también el modelo GZ-HD10 el cual ofrece un disco duro de 40GB y algunas características algo más bajas para bolsillos más asequibles.

Por ahora ambos modelos de JVC Everio solo estarán disponibles en Japón con precios de 1.300 dólares (839 Euros) la GZ-HD40 y unos 1.000 dólares (645 Euros) la GZ-HD30.

Dell XPS 420 no sound / HDMI port detected

I’ve recently encountered a new problem with one of the Dell XPS systems. The Dell XPS 420 suddenly loses audio output going to the speakers. If you check the sound option in control panel, the only device it detects or shows is the HDMI port. Funny thing about this is that the brand new XPS 420 does not have an HDMI port. Expansion cards installed are ATI TVTuner card and ATI HD 2600 XT video card. Both expansion cards do support Hi-Def output but they don’t have HDMI ports. XPS 420′s audio chip is from Sigmatel. If you reinstall the drivers downloaded from Dell’s website it tells you that the object/device cannot be found. The Dell XPS 420 audio works out of the box, PC-restore sometimes works but eventually it loses the audio again. I am thinking that there is a conflict with drivers on this system. Any ideas?

We have had several customers lately that have purchased new TVs. This is partly due to the upcoming digital conversion and partly due to people wanting HDTV. The customers who are also upgrading their cable and satellite equipment to HDTV models are also extremely confused about what cables they need. For example, a customer came in this morning with a list of cables she needed to hookup her new HD system. She wanted a set of AV stereo cables, component cables, stereo audio cables, and a coax cable. She also mentioned purchasing an HDMI cable, but thought she might wait on this one. Being the shitty salesman I am (as in not trying to rip anyone off), I asked her exactly what she was attempting to do. She wanted to connect a satellite receiver to a home theater system and that to a TV. This is when I recommending only purchasing an HDMI cable. Well, she thought the HDMI cable would not carry sound, which I told her that it would. She has not been the only person in the store confused about what all the cables do, nor do I expect her to be the last. Hopefully, I received some brownie points for being honest and not selling her $200 worth of cables.

La compañía Sotec ha presentado su nuevo ordenador de sobremesa con un diseño ultrafino (apenas tiene 78mm de ancho) que hará que podamos colocar la torre en casi cualquier lugar pues su ancho es poco más o menos el de una consola next-gen tipo Xbox 360. Se trata del Sotec PC Station DS7010, un ordenador de sobremesa que cuenta con la característica especial de contar con un sintonizador de televisión digital integrado así como una interfaz HDMI.

El ordenador se venderá en dos modalidades; una de gama baja que contará con un procesador Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 a 2 Ghz, 1 Gb de memoria RAM, una tarjeta gráfica nVidia GeForce 7100, un disco duro con una capacidad de almacenamiento de 160 Gb así como una grabadora de DVD; todo ello a un precio de 370 euros.

En cuanto a la versión de gama alta, ésta tendrá un coste de 550 euros aproximadamente y contará con un procesador Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 a 2,40 Ghz, 2 Gb de memoria RAM así como un disco duro con una capacidad de almacenamiento de 320 Gb. El resto de características son las mismas que en la versión de gama baja; nada mal de precio desde luego.
