"Not necessarily," Luke Russert said. "I had prior relationships with both of them."

He asked both Obama and McCain about whether community service should be mandatory for young people. They said no, but both presidential candidates said the United States missed a real opportunity to teach citizens about sacrifice following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Matt Lauer debriefed him about the interviews.

No one would have figured on seeing a Russert on the "Today" show this political season following the shocking death of Luke's dad, Tim Russert, of a heart attack on June 13.

Offered the chance to report on youth issues for NBC News, the gregarious young Russert dove into the assignment with gusto, toting a microphone backstage at the Democratic and Republican conventions. Many of his stories have appeared on the "Nightly News" Web site and he blogs about his experiences on iCue.com

"He's one of the rookies of the year," said NBC News President Steve Capus. "Here's a man at the worst possible time in his life who stepped into the spotlight with great poise, strength and a sense of humor, with a love of politics and a love for NBC."

Would a young man at his age and with his credentials secure such a high-profile job if his last name wasn't Russert? Doubtful, of course. But NBC News might be expected to act paternally toward a person its employees watched grow by the side of its beloved Washington bureau chief and "Meet the Press" host.

He often accompanied his dad on assignments ("as a 10-year-old I was as tall as Ross Perot," he recalled), riding McCain's "Straight Talk Express" during the 2000 primary campaign and meeting Obama at a forum on public service in 2006.

But it's not as if Russert didn't bring something to the table. The recent Boston College graduate has worked in media since he was a teenager, co-hosting a sports talk show on XM satellite radio with political consultant James Carville. Before his father died, he had already lined up a job covering the presidential campaign for another XM station. He chose to go to NBC when it offered more exposure.

The Russert name also undoubtedly helped land last week's interviews with the two candidates, particularly important since many McCain supporters have been seething about NBC News. In small talk before the interview, McCain said how much he wished Luke's father was covering the election. Obama hugged him and asked how he was holding up.

"Everybody in the political world knows Luke Russert," Capus said. "They knew him before (his father's death) and they know him after it. Here is a guy who is going to get his calls returned."

Capus said he had a couple of gut-check talks with the young Russert, aware that it could appear NBC News was adding pressure to his life by making him subject to whispers that he was getting ahead through nepotism. Capus didn't think it would be a problem, since he was getting a limited assignment, not his dad's host slot on "Meet the Press."

Russert's certainly aware that people would be watching him closely.

"It's extremely important to go to work each day knowing you're going to leave it all out on the field, to use a sports analogy," said Russert, who shares his father's love for the Buffalo Bills.

"The last thing I want to do is appear not qualified, to appear that it was just a nepotism hire, to appear that everything was just handed to (me)," he said. "I certainly acknowledge that the last name doesn't hurt. But at the end of the day I don't think a company like XM or NBC would be willing to spend money on me just for the sake of nepotism. I actually have to produce."

From the time he dreamed of being a "SportsCenter" anchor at age 10, Russert figured he'd go into the family business. His mom, Maureen Orth, writes for Vanity Fair. Dinner table conversation would be about school and friends, but also about the Contract for America.

At the Democratic convention, Russert found three young Muslim women for a story about their support for Obama, and found young Republicans in St. Paul. Much of his material appears online, partly because he claims no interest in joining the often cutthroat fights for airtime among experienced reporters.

His blog allows for a more opinionated outlook. After watching McCain deliver his convention speech, Russert wrote that the candidate "reminded me of the old war vet you meet at a bar who tells you his life story and then says something along the lines of: `Son, make this country better for us.'"

Most important is that he's out hustling at a time in his life that many in his situation might retreat to their rooms, closing the door behind them. He believes hard work is the best cure for misery.

"It keeps your mind off of a tough event," he said. "If you're busy, you don't sit and think. It's important to think, it's important to reflect on a tragic event. But I also think it's important not to harp on it all day. One has to go on and live their life as best they can and take the lessons from those lost and go forward."

Cette année a été particulièrement propice aux ouragans. D'ailleurs le 2 Septembre dernier, on dénombrait pas moins de 4 ouragans actifs dans le golfe du Mexique et dans la première semaine de Septembre, 4 tempêtes tropicales ont été observées.

Les images du satellite GOES (2 images par heure) de l'hémisphère Nord permettent d'illustrer le parcours des tempêtes; portées depuis les sub-tropiques par les Alizés (trade winds) jusqu'au courant-jet (jet stream) aux latitudes plus élevées.

Alors comment ça marche?

L'atmosphère comme machine thermique

Le comportement de l'atmosphère peut-être expliqué comme un bilan non pas financier mais énergétique.

La radiation solaire est la seule source d'énergie extérieure pour l'ensemble Terre/atmosphère. Au cours du cycle d'absorption/ ré-émission des radiations, l'atmosphère et la Terre échangent de l'énergie. Le calcul de bilan d'énergie global montre que la Terre gagne de l'énergie par échange radiatif et que l'atmosphère en perd par rayonnement.

Le bilan énergétique est équilibré par le biais des processus non-radiatifs, comme la conduction (énergie latente - évaporation de l'eau) ou la convection (énergie sensible - mouvements verticaux turbulents), qui réchauffe l'atmosphère. Le réchauffement par l'énergie latente est le mécanisme dominant.

Si maintenant nous examinons le bilan radiatif en fonction de la latitude, nous voyons que les régions tropicales reçoivent un excès de radiation alors que les pôles sont en large déficit. Ici encore, les processus océaniques et atmosphériques vont agir pour rétablir l'équilibre. La circulation atmosphérique globale est le résultat de ce transfert d'énergie tropique-pôles.

Et les cyclones dans tout ça? Deux secondes, j'y viens.

Au niveau des tropiques, la circulation atmosphérique est gouvernée par la cellule de Hadley. En résumant, l'air chaud et humide converge à l'équateur. Cet air suit ensuite un mouvement ascendant dû à la convection. L'air se déplace vers les zones de pression plus basses en formant des orages. Quand il atteint les hautes partie de la troposphère, il est bloqué par la tropopause et se déplace alors vers les pôles.

Au dessus des mers des tropiques (ou la température des eaux de surface est plus élevés), on peut observer des très gros nuages (cumulus). Ce processus de convection profonde (deep convection) est la signature de la circulation atmosphérique dans les régions tropicales. Ces nuages accompagnés de pluies exportent de l'énergie de la surface terrestre à l'atmosphère.

Et les cyclones dans tout ça?

Tout ça c'est bien beau mais l'atmosphère est un moteur thermodynamique pas très efficace. De temps en temps, il arrive que ce manque d'efficacité résulte en un accroissement des disparités entre les sources chaudes et les puits froids. Cette disparité nécessite la formation d'un système de transfert énergétique plus efficace: le cyclone.

Chaque jour, quelque part, c'est la saison des cyclones. Ces tempêtes monstrueuses permettent de maintenir l'équilibre quand l'atmosphère transfère de la chaleur latente de l'équateur vers les pôles. On parle d'ouragans (hurricanes) ou de typhons (typhoons) suivant l'endroit où ces cyclones apparaissent:

• ouragans pour l'atlantique sud, les caraïbes et l'est du pacifique
• typhons pour l'ouest du pacifique, les Philippines, la Chine, le Vietnam et le Japon

Et la Géorgie ?

Ben la Géorgie est dans le couloir (Hurricane Alley) mais il y a de grandes chances pour que les ouragans s'essoufflent avant de toucher Athens et pour qu'ils se transforment en tempêtes tropicales. En fait à Athens et dans la région d'Atlanta, ce sont plutôt les tornades qui sont à craindre.

We're dead pleased cos we've just seen that a photo of Lula has been used in the massive music exhibition 'The Beat Goes On' at the Liverpool Museum! We only found out when we were going around the exhibition and it was a pretty cool surprise...you'll find her in the new bands section if you go along. There's also great stuff there about Ladytron, Eric's and a new discovery, 'Big In Japan', who were a really mad punk band in Liverpool who used to play at Eric's.

Molta gent els coneix per els temes més enèrgics i durs, però en tots els seus discos podem trobar precioses balades, com aquesta Off He Goes, un dels seus temes que més m'agraden, i que pertany al disc No Code, publicat el 1.996 en una època una mica convulsa en el si de la banda, i que en certa manera, la lletra que Eddie Vedder va escriure en aquest tema, sembla reflexar una mica, doncs parla d'un home que rep un amic al qui la fama ha canviat, gairebé com en una autoreflexió crítica del punt on havia arribat el grup en aquells moments.

Bien, pese a que no de forma regular, estoy de vuelta, e intentaré ir actualizando el blog con nuevos temas.

Mucha gente les conoce por los temas más enérgicos y duros, pero en todos sus discos podemos encontrar preciosas baladas, como esta Off He Goes, uno de sus temas que más me gustan, y que pertenece al disco No Code, publicado en 1.996 en una época un poco convulsa en el seno de la banda, y que, en cierta manera, la letra que Eddie Vedder escribió en este tema, parece querer reflejar, puesto que habla de un hombre que recibe a un amigo a quien la fama ha cambiado, casi como una autoreflexión crítica del punto donde se encontraba el grupo en esos momentos.

Carlos Góes, Reitor da Universidade Comunitária Micronacional - UNICM, publicou hoje o estatuto social da instituição e nomeou cinco professores titulares para a mesma, retomando o trabalho que havia começado há meses atrás.

Em um discurso em vídeo, Góes enfatizou a importância da universidade como peça fundamental para o avanço micronacional de tecnologias de comunicação já antigas no mundo inteiro, mas ainda pouco utilizados no micromundo.

Segundo Góes, os recursos audiovisuais serão muito utilizados como forma de "humanizar e aproximar mais as pessoas do trabalho realizado na universidade". Contando com cinco faculdades, a UNICM oferecerá cursos em diversas áreas através de uma plataforma que já é usada, inclusive, por faculdades macronacionais.

HA NOI — Ha Noi’s Dong Da District police yesterday took legal proceedings against a public order disturbance case that took place at the Chien Thang Garment Joint Stock Company on August 15.

Head of the Dong Da Police Vu Cong Long said the police force would conduct investigations into the case to bring to trial those who intentionally damaged property and provoked a disturbance of public order, in line with Viet Nam’s Criminal Law, Articles 143 and 245.

According to the investigation agency, some people broke down a 6-m long section of the wall surrounding the Chien Thang Company on August 15. Hundreds of people then overran into the company-managed area to chop down trees, level the surface and pitch tents. They also made prayers and hymned in the area, upsetting the public order.

The police have made on-site investigations, asked for witnesses’ statements, requested a damage assessment and gathered evidence in accordance with the law in order to bring the case to light. —
