Hace algunos días recibí de regalo el libro "Yo, Robot", de Isaac Asimov. En el capítulo 1 ("Robbie"), este pródigo escritor muestra la relación que podría llegar a darse con un robot, llegando a mezclar sentimientos propios del ser humano. ¿Llegará el humano a tener dichos sentimientos con las máquinas? o ¿mientras no sea ser vivo no "mereceria" tal manifestación de afecto?

¿Qué pasó con algunas personas que jugaron el conocido "tamagotchi"? Conozco a varias que sentían un afecto con dicha mascota virtual, y la trataban con cariño y dedicación. Si esto pasó con algo virtual, también podría llegar a pasar con una entidad física que emulara algunas actitudes inteligentes.

Travellinbaen found himself at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi a few days ago, and for reasons irrelevant here decided to partake in the $22 buffet. Buffets have there place in the culinary world. They offer instant gratification and something to please everyone.  But seldom, never in my experience, is a single buffet item the "best" in class. What I mean is, if you want fish, you may choose it happily at a buffet, but if that is ALL you want, and you want the best, you will go to your favorite seafood joint and order it off the menu.

So if you wanted to put out a buffet of songs, what would be on it? Remember, we must strive to please everyone.  And nobody has to know if you find yourself humming along.

I am a firm believer that every cover band in the United States plays "Mustang Sally."  Yet you never hear this on the radio.  I wonder why that is?  But play this song at a dance and the people will follow their Pavlovian compulsion to wave their arms aloft and shimmy out to the dance floor.  At any rate, any music buffet would be well served to be anchored with a double portion of this bar, wedding reception, and Mardi Gras ball staple.  

My friend JBE has often pointed out that back in the late 80's and early 90's every frat house band would cover G-L-O-R-I-A-GLORIA.  This is another excellent item for our trough.  Danceable, lyrically friendly and loud.  As we move along the buffet, we won't be able to resist a taste of Buffett's Margaritaville.  Sure, its not good for you, but it has plenty of salt, and that always works on a buffet.  

At a buffet, one often eats until even his eyes feel bloated, which reminds me of another tune guaranteed to get the folks out there to dance off the calories--Brown Eyed Girl.  Yes, Van Morrison has a lot of songs that are better for you, but we can all get serious about our diet tomorrow.  

A money making buffet always needs lots of cheesy casseroles, and on our music version, the entire catalog of John Cougar Mellencamp fills the bill.  Hey, I seldom change channels when his tunes hit the airwaves, but I'd never waste one of my 2000 Ipod slots on Jack and Diane, would you?  

Finally, we reach the desserts and if you saved room, its time for "Stroke It".  But if things are moving slower as you begin to get your fill, I gotta suggest topping off this potpourri with a song for all the closers out there, and those who want to be closed upon--Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman."

I know I'm leaving out a ton of others and invite you to add to my list.  After all, a buffet can only achieve lofty status and justify more than ten bucks, if it is obscenely indulgent.  And I promise not to tell anyone you stopped by for a taste.

Max and her flock are adventuring again, but this time they've teamed up with Dr. Martinez and Jeb. You may be a little disappointed in the fight scenes, they aren't as exciting as usual, and the whole save-the-world plan is not as huge as you woud have imagined. Saving the world by giving a speech is not exactly how I thought Max would do it either, but hopefully there will be another book. The Voice seems to think so anyway.

I was a huge Sepultura fan when I first hooked up with the band in 1988 on their first U.S. tour. Luckily their broken English was not a barrier - the band and I quickly developed a strong and lasting friendship that continues to this day. My connection with Max was very strong as he welcomed me into his home and private life. I spent a few weekends at his home, photographed him and Gloria as they received matching tattoos in their living room, and I was honored to photograph Max and Gloria’s wedding.

I received a phone call from Max, he had amazing news – Max was going to be a father. I was so proud and happy for Max and Gloria…almost as excited as they were. Nine months later I received another phone call…Max and Gloria wanted to fly me to Phoenix so I could shoot the first photos of newly born Zyon Cavalera and his family.

When I arrived, I felt so much love and joy in the house. I had never seen Gloria smile so much in my life, and Max was so proud. All of the other kids in the family, no matter their age, were just as excited about the new addition to the family. Max and I practically stayed up the entire night, talking, watching movies, eating junk food - just two friends catching up. The birth of Zyon really gave Max a new perspective on the world, his life and his music. He seemed much more focused and much more determined to take over the world.

The next morning I set up a nine-foot seamless backdrop in their living room and marched the proud parents in. Zyon was so alert and so cooperative, it was beautiful. I had never really dealt with kids before, let alone a baby that was only a few weeks old. At one point, Max got inspired and grabbed a sharpie and wrote “ZYON” across his knuckles. I told him to stick it out towards me while he held on to little Zyon. Max loved the word “ZYON’ written across his knuckles so much that a few days later he went and had his son's name permanently tattooed on to his fingers.

The shot was magic…it turned out to be our favorite. The image really seemed to capture the strength and power that Max possesses yet it also showed the soft, fatherly side that Max was just beginning to discover.

While answering the question, it occured to me that there's another, (in my opinion) equally interesting question:

What's your favorite moment in music?

I'll toss out my answers in the hopes that'll help this make sense.

These are in no particular oder:

In "Under Pressure", by Queen and David Bowie, there's that little moment of silence, about 3/4s the way through the song.  The whole thing builds and builds and builds to this crescendo... and then... for just one sweet moment: nothing.  Then that stripped down, snap-your-fingers-to the chorus.

In "Gloria" U2 There's that bass/guitar solo, and Bono introduces everybody (in some versions) and then there's this perfect, harmonized chorus.   It's like the whole song comes together in that one moment.

In Pachabell's Cannon (sorry, that's not the real name, but you know the one.  It's the tune they play at weddings and used to feature on AA commercials) the moment when the two different parts come together, and sort-of just swirl around each other.  (If the version has nature sounds or synthesized instruments it should be destroyed; even this moment doesn't redeem it.)

The rockin' portion of some versions of "Jesus paid it all" that becomes a sort-of chant: "Oh praise the one/ who paid my debts/ and brought my life back from the dead" (I'm getting all goose pimply just thinking about it.

And yes, I have to add this one even though it ups my cheesiness factor by about 10 (at least) In "Careless Whisper" by Wham, I love that saxophone solo.

Dios será exaltado en tu dificultad. Dios saldrá victorioso y te colocará fuera de peligro. Dios es tu salvador. Puedes esperar en él.

The first movement is in D major, a tonality that was thought to be especially brilliant in timbre and best suited for trumpet. This movement is formed like a concerto with a full orchestral ritornello. The chorus enters where the soloist would start, singing the glorious angelic hymn. The harmonic progressions reflect the joy and pathos of a humble birth while the cadenza is replaced by a grand pause of silence before ending with a restatement of glory.

The second movement is set in the relative minor key to D major, serving as a somewhat tragic foil to the brilliance of the first movement. The text begins “Et in terra…” where earth seems darkened by a lack of trumpet and oboe. The choral lines swell like rising and setting suns, a Baroque metaphor for East and West. This movement is one of Vivaldi’s boldest tonal designs, passing through 8 key centers.

“Laudamus te” suggests a bourrée, a merry dance which came to Italy from France by 1681. This duet can be imagined as a contest between sopranos, a popular entertainment in Vivaldi’s time. The next chorus switches to minor key and the statement “Gratias agimus tibi” is converted into a musical question by stopping on a half-cadence. The musical answer is quite scholarly: a fugue on “Propter magnam gloriam tuam.” The Gloria continues with the “Domine Deus, Rex caelestis” in the key of C major. Next, a single soprano joins the oboe in a duet over continuo, the thinnest instrumentation of the entire Gloria. This movement is set as a Siciliano, a pastoral dance associated in the early eighteenth-century with shepherds and idyllic country life, projecting the image of the Good Shepherd.

The mood and tempo revive in “Domine Fili Unigenite.” The saccadé rhythmic formula drives the piece in contrast with the legato, triadic lines of both vocal and instrumental forces. For the next movement the exuberance changes into an emotionally charged quietude for the contralto soloist. She asks the Lamb of God for mercy and is joined by the chorus in begging. This movement is an allemande, a heavy dance that started a dance suite or was used as a lady’s dance of introduction.

The allemande was always followed by the corrente, a quick Italian dance in triple time, but first Vivaldi interposes 20 bars of connective material so he can modulate from D minor to the relatively remote tonality of B minor. The strings and chorus move in a chromatic linear fashion, asking repeatedly for God’s receipt of the prayers of the world, simultaneously leaping harmonically in a chain of shifting key centers to arrive at the penultimate climax. This sets the tonal stage for “Qui sedes.” The contralto speaks for all humanity in a plea for mercy. The string orchestra has full ritornelli at beginning and end with a sharply defined melody that reuses material from the opening movement as well as the movement following.

The opening octave theme now returns with the oboe and trumpet in “Quoniam tu solus Sanctus.” This reused material creates a columnar musical architecture framing the entire work, holding it together with symmetry, tonality, texture, rhythm, and orchestration.

The final movement is a customary fugal doxology. Vivaldi was not fond of working in strict counterpoint, so he borrowed a fugue that G.M. Ruggieri composed in 1708. Vivaldi first used the Ruggieri fugue in his Gloria RV 588, reworking the orchestration and chorus. Then for this Gloria he reset the text and expanded the role of the orchestra to create a fitting conclusion. - all rights reserved to Richard Gard 2007 used with permission

A história da campanha é a seguinte: a AMP convidou o SP:00 e mais dois blogs (Funhell e Freakstyle) para fotografar a coleção de verão 2009 com os frequentadores dos clubes Vegas, Funhouse e Glória respectivamente. A gente leva um acervo de peças da nova coleção da marca pras pessoas montarem um look com elas e o que mais estiverem usando. Daí é só se jogar na balada. O resultado vai virar o catálogo novo da AMP e, futuramente, uma exposição. Não é incrível?

A campanha começou a ser fotografada ontem na Funhouse e termina sexta, durante a festa Vai! no clube Glória. Te vejo na pista!

Musik war schon immer eine wichtige Komponente im Leben von Stephen Lynch. Doch erst nachdem er den Film „The Spinal Tap“ gesehen hatte, fand er seine Berufung, Comedian-Singer-Songwriter zu werden. So zog Lynch 1996 nach New York, um seine Musik einem größeren Publikum präsentieren zu können. Bei seinen zahlreichen Auftritten in den Comedy-Clubs der Stadt fand er viele Fans seiner Gitarrenmusik mit spitzzüngigen Texten voller schwarzem Humor und durch seine Touren durch die USA und Europa vergrößerte sich diese Fangemeinde noch.

Zuletzt spielte Stephen im Broadway Musical “The Wedding Singer”, das auf dem gleichnamigen Film mit Adam Sandler und Drew Barrymore basiert, wofür er eine Tony-Nominierung erhielt.

Bei seiner Tour im Frühsommer wird Stephen Lynch mit seinen Texten voller Sprachwitz zum ersten Mal endlich auch in Deutschland Halt machen und bei einer exklusiven Club-Show im Kölner Gloria auftreten.

Pra noite não ficar só (como assim?!) nisso... vai rolar dentro da festa as fotos que irão compor o catálogo da AMP verão 2009. Explico melhor... a Amulherdopadre (AMP) lança neste ano um projeto ousado e super bacana que busca antecipar a perda do controle sobre as possibilidades de composição de suas peças antes mesmo que elas saiam da loja. A idéia é levar a coleção pra balada, onde o público presente poderá compor as peças da loja com o manequim próprio. Tudo isso vai ser registrado pelo nosso fotógrafo Fubah e no final as fotos vão para o catálogo de verão e para uma exposição que vai rolar mais pra frente.

No intercâmbio que fiz nas férias, conheci Emanuel, um simpático mineiro que se apresentava como cantor. Mas ao conversarmos, descobri que ele não era um qualquer cantor: Emanuel é tenor no coro da Osesp. De volta ao Brasil, a cada oi que trocávamos, eu pentelhava: "quando é mesmo que você vai me convidar para ver você cantar?", e recebia a resposta: "qualquer dia, não muito distante". E esse dia finalmente chegou, e eu fui, felicíssima, pretigiá-lo na Sala São Paulo. No programa estava a obra “Gloria”, de Vivaldi.

Essa não era a primeira vez que iria à Sala São Paulo para assistir a um concerto. Costumava, há alguns anos, ir, quase todos os domingos, aos Concertos Matinais (que voltaram a acontecer. Eba!) com uma companhia que muito me agradava na época. Íamos não porque éramos endinheirados, íamos porque gostávamos e o valor do ingresso era/é muito convidativo: R$ 2, e estudante tem direito a meia. E convenhamos, nada é melhor do que ouvir música clássica ao vivo. Mas bem, era a primeira vez que eu assistiria à apresentação de um coro, mais, de um coro daquela qualidade.

 É complexo definir como foi, pois não tenho repertório o suficiente, nem conheço música o bastante para tentar explicar com termos técnicos. Talvez, poderia definir assim: foi de melhor qualidade que o canto gregoriano do mosteiro de São Bento, e tão divino quanto. Acho que não ficou bom. Pense em um som divino, angelical... Hummm... Ok. "Gloria" é uma música sacra, o que talvez me ajudou a sentir essa aproximação com os céus. Bem, o fato é que eles poderiam estar cantando só “óóóóóóóóóóó...” e já seria agradabilíssimo. Materializando a qualidade, para se ter uma melhor noção do quão bom é o som, seria como deitar o ouvido em um travesseiro de pena de ganso com fronha de fios egípcios. Não convenci? É, acho que só ouvindo. 

Tenho que confessar, porém, que achei a primeira parte um pouco monótona. Pois a música meio que se repetia durante os quarentas minutos de apresentação. Mas a segunda... quanta diferença. O coro e a orquestra ganharam um colorido com as belas vozes das solistas: Cláudia Haberman, Anna Carolina Moura e Denise de Freitas. E quando eu disse colorido, foi colorido mesmo: as donas d’As Vozes, diferente dos cantores e músicos, que trajavam preto, vestiam belíssimos longos: roxo, vermelho e dourado.

No fim, ao curvar da regente Naomi Munakata anunciando que acabou não se ouvia assovios junto com as palmas. Mas sim: Bravo! Bravíssimo!!!

É arte: muito melhores do que os três toques de campainha, que são dados no teatro alertando o público que a peça começará, são as notas do trompete, que soam para o público, de maneira delicada e elegante, convidando-o: entre, entre.

É fato: Quando ia aos Concertos Matinais, cruzava com senhoras elegantééérrimas. Então, me lembrando delas, não fiz feio, em vesti como lady inglesa (isso não é comentário meu, nem da mamãe). Porém, a elegância da manhã não foi repetida no concerto do anoitecer (17h/19h). Ao meu lado se sentou uma menina, parecia ser pouco mais velha do que eu, que usava jeans, moletom e sandália rasteira.
