I've been dabbling in the electric bass for a couple of years now ... I'm not good, but I love to play. I mostly play popular riffs and tabs from the Internet.

I'm looking for a drummer and guitarist to jam with in a garage somewhere (mine?) -- nothing serious, maybe commit to learning 8-10 songs with the possible goal of playing at a block party or something. I like all music, mostly rock. I also like simple, easy to play songs. Here's a video of my daughter and I playing 'New Year's Day' by U2 when we were in Seattle (I told you I wasn't very good).

If you're interested or know of someone who is, please email me!

Sorry that this is late (hey, it's still Friday in my timezone, whatever Wordpress thinks). Unfortunately this is going to be a tad rushed. I have something better to do- namely sleep- right now. I have a 5K tomorrow and a half-marathon (my first) the next day. Bad planning? Yes. Is that going to stop me? No. This will go down as one of my numerous 'stupid running stunts.'

In any case, here's a song which has been on my running playlist ever since I discovered it. It's called 'Something Better' and the artist is "true story." Modern rock, and fast paced enough for me to run to.

Oasis finds creative haven

From Apple.com's "Top Stories" feed Sept. 5, 2008.

Oasis finds creative haven in GarageBand

In his exclusive interview with MusicRadar, Noel Gallagher reveals that “following the ‘four and a half year’ struggle to record Don’t Believe the Truth,” Gallagher and his Oasis bandmates “ditched his elaborate home studio” and took up GarageBand. Using GarageBand, Gallagher says, “we actually do our demos now in Gem’s bedroom” or on the band’s tour bus.

But it's not that the band threw out their studio equipment in favor of the simplicity and quality of Garage Band.

If you actually go into and listen to the audio, Joe Bosso of music Radar interviews Gallagher about the bands demo process. Gallagher laments about the demos recorded with his home studio equipment. They were apparently too good and interfered with the process of moving from demo to record.

"Now we do real scratchy low-fi shitty demos, knowing that there's no way we can do worse than that in the studio." (about 5 minutes into the audio)

There you have it folks: "Garage Band, There's no other way we could make it shittier for the studio."

Using Garage Band was an effort to tone done the quality of the demos.

I don't know much about studio recording. I would think that one could put together a fairly decent demo with Garageband. But I don't think this is the kind of image Apple wanted to portray about their consumer audio product.

Also I hear nothing about a tour bus the Apple blurb mentions. I find it hard to believe this little blurb was worth the tarnish it might lend the product or the company.

I love listening to music. Tamil, Hindi, English, Language of the Dolphins anything that sounds good

I love listening to music. Tamil, Hindi, English, Language of the Dolphins anything that sounds good I hear it. I had made a few attempts at learning music. At one time, as a Bored Bachelor in Bangalore (wow, that seems like a nice title of a post!) I attempted learning Guitar. I made through bruises in my fingers and was imagining myself as Slash or Roger Waters while I was not even good at going quickly from a A-Major Chord to C-Major. The Tutor told me that I am useless when it comes to music and I should get married and this was why.

Tutor: What's this?

Me: Guitar pick.

Tutor: Why is it thick?

Me: The last one I had was thin so it broke easily, that's why I bought a thicker one.

Tutor: Only Bass Guitarists have the thick ones. You are trying to play an Acoustic.

Me: Really, Sorry I didn't know that. Who is this Bass Guitarist?

Tutor: A Bass Guitarist is one who ... sigh ... never mind. For now let's say you are not the Bass Guitarist, just use this thin pick.

Hence, I stopped learning music and got married. Well, It doesn't sound exactly like that but me being useless in music learning and the "Thick Pick" incident part is 100% true. Everything else is masala mix.

I made a second attempt with a M-Audio Keystation Keyboard connected to my Mac and tried to learn rolling my fingers on the keyboard with the aid of a Mac software called Garage Band. This time I wanted to learn music the right way by trying to understand the Musical Staff notations. Only, Whenever I saw the staff notation, all I could remember was spaghetti. But Hey, I learnt to play the Happy Birthday song somehow, that is a progress right? Time went on and I didn't go back to the music lessons and have kept the Keyboard aside hoping my daughter would pick it up and learn to play someday or may be we will learn it together. Otherwise I have to use it as a Surf board.

My learning of music remained ephemeral. Finally, I learnt to play 2 more songs. Row, Row, Row your boat and Twinkle Twinkle on my daughter's ... ahem ... Xylophone. This is the relationship between me, music and learning. You can see how dull that is.

But with Garage Band, it is very easy to compose music. Even people like me who have little to no knowledge of music can easily put together the loops of music available in the software and come up with scores that sound good.

Now, Coming to the post ( This is probably one of those post that has 90% introduction blah! and then 10% actual content) I made a Haiku called Color of Wisdom. What color will wisdom be? (no not the Wisdom tooth!).

I found there,

Color of Wisdom,

A Grey Hair!

Sucks right? (Both Haiku and the Grey Hair). So I sat down and used Garage band to come up with a small theme music for this feeling.

[audio http://boxstr.com/files/3339117_zhnlu/ColorofWisdom.mp3]

I wanted to relate the strings to the (Grey) hair so I used Classic Rock Guitar loops.

You are free to download this music and use it for your personal purpose (Are you sure you want this?). Also, this means that I have a podcast. If you put my feedburner link in iTunes or any other podcast playing software, it should download the music automatically whenever I post a new Music or Video post (I think!).

Have a wonderful weekend! and Have a fantastic long Labour day weekend for those in US.

We all like free stuff, right? Here are some One Less Reason MP3's off of Garage Band. One Less Reason is a real gem among unsigned bands. In 2003 they were signed with Universal Records but then broke off due to a conflict of interests- but not before rocking the airwaves with their hit single Favorite Color. Now, as much as I'd love to give you all that MP3, the band is not currently offering it for free, and I will respect that choice. In any case, I'm sure most of you can find it yourselves, by one method or another.

Snow Angels by One Less Reason

Worthless (Dead and Breathing) by One Less Reason

Both these songs were inspired by the tragic death of the songwriter's best friend. Details can be found on their Garage Band page.

I view One Less Reason as possibly the best hard rock band on GB, and while I won't claim to like all of the songs this band has turned out, another good one you might want to look into is 'Really Bad Analogy.'

Hopefully this 'Free Friday' thing will become a weekly event. I'm working on digging up e-books, mp3s, and anything else both free and legal that I can find. If you have anything to suggest, feel free to comment or contact me by other means.

Boston’s Muck And The Mires made a very special trip to Southern California recently in order

Boston's Muck And The Mires made a very special trip to Southern California recently in order to perform at Bar Pink Elephant in San Diego on 8/8/08 and then at the "Mondo Hollywood Garage Band " Festival at Knitting Factory in Hollywood on 8/9/08. For those of you who are not familiar with Muck and enjoy early Beatles-styled songs with some "oompf," it is imperative that you know about this band RIGHT NOW!!! If you have a chance to see them play live, DO NOT MISS IT!!! I've been a fan and supporter of Muck And The Mires since the beginning and it was my pleasure to have attended both shows and spend some quality time with the guys...and girl. Oh yeah...their drummer is a woman...and she is one of the best drummers I have ever witnessed. She's THAT good. I've dubbed her the "Joan Jett of the drums."

Muck And The Mires documented their trip out West and made a little video diary for your viewing pleasure. Check out the YouTube footage below. You will see legendary music man Kim Fowley, Bruce Wayne's office and West Hollywood landmark, Barney's Beanery. It's great when musicians are cinematic geniuses too.

In the very early days, Muck And The Mires would pretend to be from Canada, say "Ay" between songs and play Beatles "Cavern Club" styled music, but with way more hooks. Over the next couple of years, they refined their sound and gained noteriety around the Northeast. After winning Little Steven's Best Garage Band contest in 2004, they were catapulted into the upper stratosphere of Garageband Land and that's the where they've been ever since...and deservedly so.

BUT...I want to make it abundantly clear that Muck And The Mires are so much more than just a "Garage Band." Songwriter Evan Shore (AKA "Joey Muccarino" or "Muck") is one of the foremost authorities on Sixties music and, in particular, the classic songwriting style that was introduced by The Beatles. The Music Theorist in me forces me to describe Evan as a "great practitioner of functional harmony in the 'Pop' music sense," which is a huge compliment in my book. Evan's craftmanship has made him one of my favorite songwriters.

Bar Pink Elephant Show: Friday - August 8, 2008 (San Diego)

This was a great night for Muck And The Mires. It was their first live date in San Diego and their performance was nothing less than a professional stage show that knocked everyone's socks off. I filmed the entire set with Evan Shore's digital video camera, so let's hope that they post the footage in its entirety very soon (they used a couple of snippets in the YouTube footage above.) There is no immune system that can withstand the infectious sound of this band in the live setting...it's undeniable.

"Mondo Hollywood Garage Band" Festival: Saturday - August 9, 2008 (Hollywood)

This 2-day "festival" turned out to be a debacle for the promoters (I'm positive about that,) but I am very happy to report that Muck And The Mires were the best band on the Saturday bill, turning in another energetic and polished set that made almost everyone shake a little, including this blogger. Sure...Mary Weiss, the legendary lead vocalist from The Shangri-Las, was on the bill, playing LA for the first time, and so was Magic Christian, a garage band supergroup of sorts, consisting of Cyril Jordan (Flamin' Groovies,) Clem Burke (Blondie,) and Eddie Munoz (The Plimsouls,) but neither couldn't compete with Muck's stage show on this night. Kim Fowley was the Emcee and his zany musical descriptions are always fun to hear.

Speaking of Kim Fowley, he co-produced Muck And The Mires' latest full-length effort, called "Hypnotic," along with Maria Baglien The record has not been released yet, but I managed to get my hands on a copy a while back. I like it a lot...really, A LOT.

Now...Go get yourself all mucked up.

www.muckandthemires.com

Well today is the day she has been waiting all year for ... the start of her week long residential riding holiday! She is so excited that she doesn't know what to do with herself. Since school broke up 3 weeks ago, I have managed to keep her distracted by taking her to Apple Summer Camps (2 on the second week and 2 on this week just gone). They were great - 3 hours long, they taught the kids how to use Garage Band to make music, digital cameras and iPhoto to work with images, video cameras and iDVD to make movies and the final one was making a presentation. She enjoyed them so much that while she was still looking forward to her holiday starting, she was more immediately looking forward to attending the camp sessions.

However, since the last one finished on Thursday, she's been stir crazy. The weather hasn't helped as it's been rainy and yucky. With nothing to distract her attention, she has been worrying about every little thing holiday-related. Starting with a full day and a half of "when are you getting my suitcase out" followed by a panic caused by me attending a sewing event yesterday (took me away from the more important task of packing her stuff). By a miracle, even though I was away yesterday, the suitcase is nearly packed, only a few shirts to add. Then we're off to Tesco's to stock her up on snacks and away we go!

Btw, D's skipping today's fun by going to a football match at Wembley. I'm not bothered because I wasn't the one who had to leave the house at 7.30am!

Garage Band... How I Hate It So

Apple doesn’t leave you wanting when it comes to all the cool things you can do with a Mac rig

Apple doesn't leave you wanting when it comes to all the cool things you can do with a Mac right out of the box. The included software is pretty much amazing and outshines Windows by far. In this little software suite is a fairly simple multitrack recording program called Garage Band. It's easy to use, packs a wide variety of features and effects, and is free with the purchase of your Mac. This is why I hate it. Back in the days before Garage Band, multitrack recording in your home was limited to serious hobbyists who where willing to spend some cash on a setup for recording in there own home. They would spend hours in a spare bedroom recording and tweaking and making sure their recording was perfect. The finished result was a CD that amazed friends and family not just the music that they heard, but the cool factor of being able to make a CD in your home. Now, with the introduction of Garage Band, anyone and their brother can record a CD and send it off to family and friends. They will, of course, be amazed. So with a tool that makes it easy and affordable to record anything you want, you might believe that a celebration is in order. Now you don't have to be confined to a spare bedroom or even pay top dollar for time in a professional studio. On the contrary, I absolutely despise Garage Band. Let me tell you why.
With Garage Band, you now don't need to have any experience in recording to use it. Suddenly things like sample rates and timecodes don't even matter. You just plug in a guitar and you push record. For someone like me who studied recording arts, this is outrageous. All of the things I tried to learn and perfect and understand are now meaningless in this bubble. For me, trying to perfect a track of drums with just the right mic placement or just the slightest reverb or EQ in post production can be easily duplicated in Garage Band, The average listener can't spot the difference. In this business, it's the average listener we want. Hardcore fans will buy records regardless. Even worse (and this has happened to me more than once), a song that took more time to mix than to write was mistaken for a song done using Garage Band! I use professional gear and professional software. That's almost insulting. Yes, I did it from home, but don't lump me together with those that use the mic built into their MacBook to record a song and upload it to their Myspace.
I know I'm a little bitter, but I went to school for this stuff. Garage Band takes it all away. It's just too easy.

In the new movie "The Rocker," cute Emma Stone (above) plays a rock bassist for a garage band. Here's what she says about the whole rock n' roll experience to GQ:

“I like to think I lost myself in the music. I’m not quite sure what the look is portraying—but I’m sure it’s up there with the uglier faces of all time.”

Well, director Judd Apatow also told her he casts girls who actually find dick jokes funny.

More photos at GQ.com

"The Rocker" is about a 80s hair band drummer trying to relive his glory years. Pretty relevant nowadays. In other words, a must-see comedy (see trailer below). I'm hoping for some decent 80s glam metal references.

Another reason to love Macs: you can create a simple podcast right from your own laptop in class with no additional software or equipment! Garage Band and a built in microphone allows novice podcasters to make their own, export to iTunes and then... How exactly do you get it on a blog or make it accessible to others? As near as I can tell ( and I spend most of the class fiddling and investigating this), you need to upload your podcast to a feed, which can cost you. One way to post an audio clip on a blog is to convert it to an MP3 file and then upload it to the internet. You then paste code into the blog. Ugh. I haven't managed to do this yet, but I have made a little test podcast that I converted to an MP3 file.

I did listen to an episode of Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe. Very cool. If i had an iPod I would put in on there.

Just to clear the air, I have been a devoted fan to Paramore for almost two years. I have been with them through the early stages of their career, and have witnessed their rise to fame after appearing on MTV. The fact that they were on MTV really - in the words of Bleeker - "cheesed me off," but I remained loyal. I ignored all of the people at school singing Misery Business because I knew that that was the only song by Paramore that any of them knew. So far, quite a few people have told me that they know only Misery Business and Crushcrushcrush when I ask them which Paramore song they like the most. They only have two to choose from! They are not fans!

Anyways, I have an insane obsession with Paramore, and most of all, the lady herself: Hayley Williams. She is my idol and such a great inspiration and artist. I love the whole I'm a girl, but I am in a kick-ass band. The past month (boring summer) I have spent gathering as many Paramore songs as I possibly can. I have both of their CDs (I've had them for quite some time), but now my goal is to acquire all of the rare unreleased songs of theirs. I love hearing songs that not very many people have heard (especially since they have OH SO MANY "fans" these days). I sing along, and am in the process of compiling a Paramore tribute on Garage Band. I now have forty-six songs by Paramore. Compare that to the twenty-four that are on their two CDs. Yes, I have been doing my research. Getting acoustic versions and hearing how lovely Hayley's voice really is is such a treat.

My dream is for my brother to take me to a Paramore concert (he has already attended one - how unfair!!!). I would love to at least meet my idol in person: the one and only Hayley Williams.

PARAMORE ROCKS, FOO'!
