(a compendium of queer words for the modern fag with a passion for the Middle Ages added hebdomadally on the Sabbath day)

46.) Roc
-noun

a.) A legendary raptor of gargantuan proportions said to be capable of carrying off and devouring prey as large as elephants.*

[Origin: From the Persian رخ rokh or rukh meaning "chariot" or "boat."]

*Tales of enormous flying beasts carrying off large prey including humans appears with curious frequency in ancient Arabic, Sanskrit, and Greek mythology to name a few. Marco Polo gives a wonderful description of the Roc carrying off elephants in the 13th century, and later in 1594, the illustrator Theodor de Bry depicted the roc destroying entire ships in revenge for destruction of its giant egg, as recounted in the fifth voyage of Sinbad the Sailor. Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela reported a story somehow akin to this in which shipwrecked sailors had themselves carried off desert islands by wrapping ox-hides round them and letting griffins carry them off as if they were cattle. Even the scene of mighty Zeus carrying off Ganymede in the form of a giant eagle comes to mind as reminiscent of the roc legend.

Running an Eclipse application on Desktop, Web and mobile platform seems to be an exciting and challenging task for many. With a clear and crisp APIs, Eclipse made this task practical and easier. Chris Aniszczyk has already posted an example of Tic-Tac-Toe on his blog.

Recently me and Trebor (another eclipse enthusiast) have done an exercise to get a sample application on top of these three (rcp, rap and ercp) run-times with the Ganymede release. In this three part tutorial we built a simple Personal Organizer application and ran it on RCP, RAP and eRCP.

First Part goes through the necessary steps to create the application and run it as the Rich Client Platform (RCP) application.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/os-dw-os-eclipse-ganymede-pt1.html

Second Part talks about the Rich Ajax Platform and how the existing code base of the sample RCP application can be adapted to run it on the RAP target.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/os-dw-os-eclipse-ganymede-pt2.html

Third Part talks about the Embedded RCP and how to adapt the existing RCP code base to be able to run it on the eRCP.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/os-dw-os-eclipse-ganymede-pt3.html

Hope these tutorials and insights will help a lot of developers to understand these platforms and know the possibilities. I will be happy to hear your experiences in making the single code base run on these three different platforms.

Till then Happy Eclipse-ing.

Download the version that suits you on the official website.

For example Eclipse IDE for Java Developers (eclipse-java-ganymede-linux-gtk.tar.gz):

wget http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/downloads/release/ganymede/R/eclipse-java-ganymede-linux-gtk.tar.gz
tar xzvf eclipse-java-ganymede-linux-gtk.tar.gz
mv eclipse eclipse3.4

You should be ready to launch

eclipse3.4/eclipse

Wait for your eclipse 3.4 Ganymede to start, and go to Windows -> Preferences. Find Java -> Installed JREs. You should see the list of the JREs known by eclipse. If the Sun Microsystems JREs doesn't appear, you'll have to show it to eclipse. To do this, Click the "Search" button and select the /usr/lib/jvm/ path. Eclipse should find JREs intalled on your system and list them. Just select the one that you want to use, and you're ready to program on your nice new Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede ;)

Cannot find a solution where both Match[requiredCapability: org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.team.svn.feature.group/[0.7.1.I20080612-1500,0.7.1.I20080612-1500]] and Match[requiredCapability: org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.team.svn.feature.group/[0.7.3.I20080814-1500,1.0.0)] can be satisfied.
Unsatisfied dependency: [org.polarion.eclipse.team.svn.connector.svnkit.feature.group 2.0.3.I20080814-1500] requiredCapability: org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.team.svn.feature.group/[0.7.3.I20080814-1500,1.0.0)

Hier nun also die Anleitung:

SVN Team Provider installieren

Help => Software updates ...

Avaialble Software

WICHTIG: Subversive Update einspielen

Help => Software Updates ...

Available Software

Available Software => Subversive Update Site => Subversive SVN Team Provider Plugin => Subversive SVN Team Provider auswählen

Install

Help => Software updates ...

Avaialble Software

"Add Site" klicken und folgende URL hinzufügen

URL: http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/update-site/

An error occured during provisioning.
Cannot connect to keystore.
JKS

eineki@base:~$ sudo update-alternatives --config java
[sudo] password for eineki:

Ci sono 5 alternative che forniscono `java'.

Selezione Alternativa
-----------------------------------------------
1 /usr/bin/gij-4.1
2 /usr/bin/gij-4.2
*        3    /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java
4 /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/bin/java
5 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

Just like everyone I add this url in p2 :
http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/update-site/
The error comes out when I tried to Install the followings:

So I tried again but this time I unchecked the SVN Connectors and kept the SVN Team Provider. This time the installation worked well and I restarted my Eclipse to finish it. Of course, even if the SVN Team Provider was installed, I can't use it without a SVN Connector. So I retried to install the SVN Connector, but the error cames out again...

On the subversive website they talk about the Subversive plug-in update site:
http://download.eclipse.org/technology/subversive/0.7/update-site/
So I add it in p2 and I retried the install but it failed again...

At this time I really don't understand what was appening. But after some google search, I got the solution: The SVN Team Provider version in the Ganymede update site is not the latest version. To get it works with the Connectors you've got to update it to the latest version. Here are the steps to make it works :

Go to Help->Software Updates.

Click on the "Available Software" tab.

Unfold the Ganymede->Collaboration Tools node, and if your experience is like mine, you will see the "SVN Team Provider (Incubation)" item with this version identifier, "0.7.1.I20080612-1500". What you really need (since the Subversive/Polarion team posted updates) is the version from 2008-08-01.

Click on "Manage Sites…".

Uncheck the "Ganymede" checkbox (http://download.eclipse.org/releases/ganymede)

Scroll down to find "http://download.eclipse.org/technology/subversive/0.7/update-site/", select it and click "OK".

You should be back on the "Available Software" tab, with only the subversive items present. Unfold the "Subversive SVN Team Provider Plugin (Incubation)" item, and you will see the "SVN Team Provider (Incubation)" item. Note that the version identifier is "0.7.3.I20080814-1500".

Check the box, and click"install". The install will be change to an update. Restart Eclipse at the end of the install.

Go to "Help->Software Updates".

Choose the "Available Software" tab.

Click the "Add Site" button, and add "http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/update-site/".

Check the SVNKit Connectors and click "Install". Restart Eclipse at the end of the install.

Subversive should be working !

The other day I started working on a JEE project of mine. Usually I use Eclipse JEE distribution on

The other day I started working on a JEE project of mine. Usually I use Eclipse JEE distribution on Linux for this. I setup a spanking new box with Kubuntu 8.0.4, Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede and JBoss AS 4x. The installations went fine and I fired up Eclipse to write the first line of code. Initial impressions were pretty good. I checked for updates to the Ganymede distribution through the Eclipse UI, found some and installed them. Thus I ended my first day with the peace of mind of having an environment that has been setup properly.

I was in for a nasty surprise the next day. I started Eclipse and the thing would just not startup. Even the dialog box to select the workspace did not appear. A message about some error and a location of the error log was all that I got. I looked for the log and the file did not exist. I tried the -clean and the -debug flags and saw a permission denied error being reported. Why was this error not reported the previous day? Anyway, I corrected the permissions and fired up the IDE once more, and got an error saying too many open files. The max number of open file handles is an OS parameter on UNIX. I looked up the Kubuntu forums, figured out how to increase this limit, increased it and restarted Eclipse. The same damn error!!!

Frustrated I removed the previous installation, and along with it all the other plugins like Subclipse and JBoss Tools, and installed the software afresh. Installed the relevant plugins and fired it up. It worked like a charm. This time I did not update the distribution. Anyway, it was getting pretty late. So that was all for the second day.

The third day was more promising. Eclipse started up without any problems. I did some reverse engineering with JBoss Seam through the JBoss Seam perspective. Seam generates a JEE app out of a data model. Once that was done I switched to the JEE perspective. I double clicked on a .xhtml file and it opened with the default JBoss JSP editor. Now this editor has a code section at the top and a preview section at the bottom. Somehow I prefer a simpler editor. But once you install the JBoss Tools, the default editor switches to the JBoss one. In order to open a file with any other editor usually you have to right click and then select an option in the Open With context menu. When I tried to do so no context menu appeared. I tried right-clicking on some of the other artifacts and it showed up for some and not for the majority. Now this was FRUSTRATING!!! I switched to the Seam perpective and surprisingly the context menu was working without any hassles. What went wrong? Short and sweet, I do not know. Setting the default JSP editor in the Prefrences screen did not solve the problem either. Uninstalling the plugins is not a solution that I would accept since I need those.

So right now I am stuck with an Eclipse IDE that works partially; I would really prefer to have something that works better.

I have been a long time Eclipse user and thought very highly of this IDE till recently. The last two releases, Europa and Ganymede, have been big disappointments. I have used them on Linux and Windows systems. The IDE has become more prone to crashes and freeze-ups. I hope the Eclipse team does something about these problems.

This frustration with Eclipse, led me to try out the NetBean 6.1 IDE. Well, I have to admit that its a very very good IDE and in certain areas actually scores more than Eclipse. NetBeans had always been a very heavy and slow to respond software (because of Swing probably). Can't say that anymore for the 6.1 version. It was snappy and worked smoothly.

Would I shift to it? Probably not immediately, but if Eclipse does not clean up its act, there would be quite a few converts for sure.

Jupiter with Moons 7/16/08

This view of Jupiter is actually a longer image (to capture the moons) combined with a stacked, shorter image to capture the planet. I combined them in Photoshop and in the end, I think this does a pretty good job of showing just what I see through my eyepiece when I look at Jupiter and its moons. The moons, from left to right are Callist, Europa, Io and Ganymede.

There's a bit of a clearing now in the sky so I think I'm going to try to get some M13 - Great Hercules Cluster imaging done. It's bright enough that it should still show up okay.

Jupiter (Io transit, GRS) on 7/14/08

This evening, which was very clear but had the Moon bright in the sky, I decided to start my imaging by focusing on the planets. Saturn and Mars, which are quite close in the sky, are getting lower on the horizon and harder to see. Soon, they'll be in the Sun's glare and I won't be able to see them for a while. Meanwhile, Jupiter is rising early enough to be seen regularly, shining very brightly in the southern sky.

While I started with Saturn, Mars and the Moon, it's the shot of Jupiter that is my favorite tonight. This is the first time I've captured the Great Red Spot (GRS). I've shot several images of Jupiter, but have never had the good fortune to be imaging while the spot is visible until tonight. it's visible in the lower right quarter of the planet. The next thing that's neat is that if you look very closely, Io is transiting the planet in the upper left - it's just barely in front of the planet. The moons to the right were added in from a longer exposure - Gannymede is the brighter one and Europa is on the far edge of the image. I'm really happy with this image.

My image of Saturn didn't turn out too well. I don't think that it was quite in focus.

Saturn on 7/14/08

Mars is just really a red spot in the sky now. It's quite far away and at least with my scope, there's no detail visble. It will be about 8 or 9 months before I'll be able to start seeing some detail on Mars again.

Mars on 7/14/08

Next, I shot one of my favorite sights on the Moon, Sinus Iridum - The Bay of Rainbows.

Sinus Iridum-Bay of Rainbows on 7/14/08

I rounded out the night capturing an additional 6 more Messier Objects, which bring me closer to my goal of completing the entire Messier catalog.

http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/update-site/

Another great release from Eclipse this year with 23 simultaneous projects. I was little bit confuse

Another great release from Eclipse this year with 23 simultaneous projects. I was little bit confused as to 23 vs 24 projects; these two numbers are hovering in different sources. Never the less, i am happy to download and play with the Release. Indeed, i was really happy and delighted to see my association with Eclipse - as a user and application developer, even though i would love to be a commiter - and the way we have been improving year-by-year.

Some of the very obvious features, i have been using from the day one.

Search Feature

Improvements in the Search feature are awesome. I specially like the detailed list of occurrences. Prior to 3.4 / Ganymede, i had to move quickly to the code segments that has the search keys. But now, with the detailed list view, i know exactly where i want to go.

Bread Crumbs in Java Editor

This was only available to some of the Web 2.0 style IDEs and Web sites. I am glad that we have this features with the JDT. Even though i have not checked, if i can re-use this Bread-Crumbs widget. At the development time, i really get a good view of the hierarchy. Remember that many of the developers would be editing the source files in the Full Screen Mode (Ctrl + M), if you need to edit or jump to another file, we often minimize, navigate and then again go back to the Full screen mode. With bread crumbs, this is so easy.

"dropins" folder

This is super cool. Prior to this release, i used to either manually/automatically copy the plugins and features into the eclipse directories or provide links to the 3rd party or custom plugins. With the "dropins" folder, its as simple as just DROPPING the custom or 3rd party plugins in the "dropins" folder. How cool is that.

New Projects and Working Sets

WorkingSets are very useful when working with multiple projects. Prior to 3.4, project can be added to a workingSet only after creating it. But with Ganymede , its possible to add a project to a working set at the time of creating it.

Enhanced Java Problem and Doc Hovers

When looking at the JavaDocs by hovering on some of the used or to be used APIs, i was tired of pressing F2 for a full view. Now Ganymede supports this EASILY by just moving the mouse over the Hovers. Quick fix also gives enhanced hover. This could prove to be useful some times.

Quick Assists

I personally feel this is a cool feature, as some of the refactoring features are combined in to the Quick Assists ( Ctrl+1 ). Instead of remembering the the Short Cuts, its easy to remember Quick Assist and luckily its context sensitive.

Read-Write Occurances

This is one feature that is small yet powerful. Once the source file is large enough, its difficult to know which methods are reading and writing a particular instance variable. This features ( Alt+Shift+O ) is very useful in this respect. It shows occurrences of reads and writes in different colors.

Arrange src elements from Outline View

This has been my long time wish to have this feature. Many times while coding, i have methods so randomly written that its time consuming to arrange them in the order (like all the Public, Protected, Private, Utility Methods, Class Helper Methods, etc...). This feature works like magic, just drag-and-drop the src elements in the outline view and the src code elements are automatically arranged.

Does anyone see that the BreadCrumbs View, Package View and Outline View are showing the elements in a different sorting order.

Debug Hover

During debug, the variable values are viewed either by Ctrl + Shift + I or with the context menu. With the Ganymede enhancement, the Mouse hover would show the variable values. This is real cool.

And Finally.......

Provisioning aka p2

The greatest thing that can happen to an Eclipse Developer and Eclipse User. For Non-Eclipse and Non-IDE users, it was difficult to chose the required plugins, their dependencies, nearest download site and then download and install. With the help of p2 this is made simple. Really SIMPLE. p2 would automatically detect the dependencies and the nearest site and then download it for you. You could also set the automatic updates for a particular plugin/feature.

I have not yet digged into all the features of p2, but i am sure there are ore features than i know.

Its so easy to browse the available software and then download it without worrying about the dependencies.

Automatic updates are possible from the Preference Page.

All in all, i am enjoying my time with Ganymede. I am sure that the ECF is one more exciting project that got released. But i have not got the time to play with it yet. I have seen one video that Ian shared. Its awesome.

Thanks to all those developers and the organizations behind them. Long live Eclipse.

A few weeks back I was thrilled to find out about the new Eclipse 3.4 release codenamed Ganymede (for those who don't know the codename of the previous release is Europa).

[wp_caption id="attachment_8" align="alignleft" width="455" caption="Eclipse Ganymede"][/wp_caption]

I was more than happy to see the large amount of new features and improvements, among them speed optimizations and the inclusion of a JavaScript editor with all the whistles and bells attached :D (but Aptana Studio Community Edititon still rules the scene in this respect IMHO). My joy was rapidly chilled when I discovered with some surprise (very unpleasant too) that there isn't a PDT release for Ganymede and the next scheduled release, that hopefully will work out of the box with Ganymede, for PDT is set for September only. I tried to use the update site from Ganymede's Update Manager with no success (I know this is n00bie behavior :( but hope is the last thing abandoned by anyone). After some extensive search using Google Search (Thanks Google) I stumbled across a blog article entitled "Eclipse Ganymede / PHP / SVN" written by Haydn William in which he blogs, like myself, about the new Eclipse release and also tells about a posting on the PDT wiki that helps to solve this issue. After reading it I was eager to try it out and !!! miracle !!! it worked without any additional problems, so now I'm the happy user of the new Eclipse Ganymede and PDT. Thank you William for the post and the PDT guys for providing this very useful development tool :) . I hope that this post will be of use to others as William's blog article was for me.

P.S. I forgot to mention that there are already integration builds of the next PDT release. I recommend using those instead on the nightly build mentioned on the wiki.

This week Ganymede, which had many new features and improvements, was released.

The effort of Eclipse foundation for creating a platform, which helps in creating application ranging from Enterprise class to Desktop applications, has to be really appreciated.

In this release, I found a couple of new API in SWT really interesting.

The first one of these enables to make a window fullscreen. We just need to set a flag on the Shell, and it becomes fullscreen.
The flag has to be set using the method : Shell.fullScreen( boolean )
Use Shell.fullScreen( true ), to make the window fullscreen.

There is another method added to the Shell class, which enables to create transparent windows.
This is Shell.setAlpha( int )
The alpha value that need to be set should be passed to this method. The alpha value ranges from 0-255. By default the alpha value is set to 255 and as we reduce the value of it, the window becomes transparent. A getter for the alpha value is also available.

Another new method is added to the Control class, which enables to create custom shaped controls.
This is Control.setRegion( Region ).
Create a region of any shape and set it onto the control. An example showing the usage of this API is here.
