Como recordaréis, la FOX canceló Futurama hace un par de años. Esto no ha supuesto el fin de la divertida serie, ya que Matt Groening diseñó una trilogía de películas lanzadas directamente en DVD que completarían la historia de Fry en el siglo XXXI.

The Beast With a Billion Backs es la segunda película de la trilogía y me ha gustado mucho más que la primera, titulada Bender's Big Score. A continuación os pongo mi crítica.

Humor: 10

Puntuación: 8,6

Lo mejor de la película: el doctor Zoidberg y Bender en versión original gana mucho y si a esto le sumamos los constantes gags que aparecen la película se convierte en imprescindible de ver para quienes disfrutan de ver películas entretenidas y divertidas.

Lo peor: lo complicada que puede llegar a ser la trama durante el último tercio de película. Llega un momento en el que hace que te preguntes: ¿qué sentido tiene esto según lo que ha salido antes? A pesar de ello, es muy entretenida, aunque algunas partes sean demasiado surrealistas (incluso para Futurama)

No os destriparé el argumento porque es la gracia de la película, pero sí os diré que el título hace referencia a un monstruo en forma de pulpo que se apodera de los humanos a través de conectarse en sus espaldas. Ahora ya veis la lógica del título.

For the second post in a row I'm afraid I'm in a rather idealistic mood. But it seems to me, now, that we look at the structure of business and marketing as it's being done by the market leaders, we look at posts by visionaries like this one, this one and this one, and we think we pretty much know how this is going to shake out...

The question of micro distribution of corporate reputation has been answered. The question of finding value inside organistations through enablement of individuals has been proven. The question of whether we think better separately or together has been answered.

So, my point is this. In the Future (doesn't really need a capital does it, since it's only a couple of minutes away), if we assume that we will broadly have a marketplace of ideas where we all now can have our say. If we will have a world where communities of interest can be powerful, and massively devolved. If we will have a world where companies can thive by coming up with powerful ideas and finding ways to communicate them quickly and powerfully. Then what do we want out of that world?

It probably sounds a bit irrelevant but it's an important question. Because we're not, any of us, I think really after better mp3 players, nor mobile phones, nor fruit smoothies.

But we also don't really have the passions of the past. If we live in big cities, at least, we've started to see the back of racism, sexism, for the most part, intollerance; what are we worrying about now? Knife crime? I know it's a serious question but it's very recent and very media orientated. House prices? Economy? That's just not intereting, really.

I think it's about this (you'll read a transcript of a Clinton interview about finding similarities rather than differences). For all the things that have been resolved, we live in a world where far too many inequalities exist for the wrong reason (there are good reasons for alot of inequalities of course).

But I'm in intrigued about views here.

If we're all going to be a position where we have all this extra information, all this extra access to cheap, easy, global media, all of this ability to form communities, how do we use this to moderate our behaviour for the better?

And more to the point, what is we actually want to achieve? Or are we all going to turn into Miss World, and look for world peace and happy families.

-I saw on some TV show a report on the Zenn Electric Car. It's basically a street legal golf cart which can travel up to 35 miles on one recharge. It can go a maximum of 25 mph. Price? Twelve Thousand Dollars. I did the numbers based on my own driving habits, and it showed it would take just over 7 years of daily driving to get this thing to pay for itself, not including the electric bill. For all but a handful of wealthy-urban-work-within-biking-distance-but-can't-bike-everyday-because-of-an-old-soccor-injury consumers this is a terrible choice.

-This is one of those pet peeves of mine which will never disappear. Ever hear someone say "that begs the question..." and they're not talking about someone making the Petitio Principia logical fallacy? They're ignorant fools not worthy of your time. Begging the question is the circular reasoning logical fallacy (example: the sun is big and hot, why is it big and hot? because it is the sun) and should only appear when someone actually begs the question. The phrase "that begets the question" is correct. When someone makes a statement which brings up other issues worthy of address, use "begets" or some other phrase.

-Purchased (for 25 irreplaceable dollars) the latest Futurama DVD "The Beast with a Billion Backs." Wow. The moment I finished watching the movie I wondered how much money I could get for the thing on eBay. It was terrible. With more direct-to-DVD features on the way, I may have to sit them out and wait for bargain prices. I had the same feeling I get after filling up a tank of gasoline after I watched this movie, except a tank of gasoline can actually get me places. I'm not being real specific with my critique here, but let me say this, the story was remarkably stupid. And unfunny. And it's over now, so I should just let it go.

A highly recommended panel is the Kevin Smith one. I don't even like his movies, but his panels are hilarious.

so i had my birthday party last night and it was fantastic! the nautical theme went down well and most everyone dressed up in a fabulous yacht-inspired outfit. i enjoyed that we all looked part of the same event when we were at the bar. drinks AHOY! was a unmitigated success and my birthday this year has been completely fabulous on multiple occasions. i also received fabulous gifts from jo and nelle including the new futurama movie (more on that in a later post) and, amazingly, three 45's from theaudience, the band that sophie ellis-bextor fronted before going solo. they are each a different colour plastic and two came with posters. i adore them. a perfect gift, it must be said. i also got my new bike from jim yesterday which was very exciting and i rode it to the store today to pick up hangover food including hawkins cheezies, iced tea, fudge, and milk in a glass bottle. (impulse hangover purchase)

on a sidenote, the hot grocery clerk was working again at wild earth. he is sex on legs. he made good eye contact and smiled quite a lot, i think recognizing my hangover from the items in my basket. am quite liking wild earth these days, especially now that sex on legs seems to be working a lot. might have to switch from shopping at save-on. hmmm...

Excelente notícia!! O segundo longa animado do desenho Futurama será lançado em DVD dia 06 de Agosto no Brasil!!

O DVD saiu semanas trás nos EUA, e pertence aos 4 filmes de Futurama que serão lançados antes da estréia da 5ª temporada do desenho que voltou após seu cancelamente anos atrás. Tudo graças as espantosas e fabulosas vendas de suas temporadas  lá fora!

O primeiro filme foi lançado no começo de 2008 no Brasil, ma mesma época do Simpsons - O Filme, e recebeu o nome de Futurama: O Grande Golpe de Bender.

O segundo filme chega ao Brasil recebendo o nome de Futurama: A Besta de um Bilhão de Traseiros como você confere na capa ao lado. O DVD já se encontra em pré-venda em algumas lojas onlines com o preço sugerido de R$ 29,90!

The song is called "Psyché Rock" by Pierre Henry and was made in 1967. Later on, it was remixed and made into the Futurama theme song.

I have no idea how true that is, but I do know that it seems like a convenient excuse for periods of times where movies/books/music with similar theme seemed to come out at the same time. It easily explains away the fads with dinosaur movies, disasters flicks, zombie munchfests, kungfu sockchops and now superhero romps.

Creative serendipity is normally the scapegoat as to why all these similar flicks come out at the same time... NOT plagiarism, or what a layman like me would describe as "riding on the success of others" or copycat.

Anyway, I just finished watching Futurama: The Beast with a Million Backs! (How wonderfully B-Grade)

It's been too long since the last episode was out and it was really good to see all the famous and not so famous cast of Futurama returns. I swear, there was a slight tingling down my back when the theme song played in the opening sequence... I could almost understand what fans of Sex and the City felt when the show hit the big screen.

ALMOST.

Not quite... that was a show that's waaaaay too... *muffled profanities*

Anyway. Loved the show. (NOT Sex and the City, wise guy...) But the thing that got to me when the Beast finally appear was how similar it is to a recent (and ongoing?) Marvel event.

The whole issue of being assimilated into a common consciousness and the "selects" actually maintaining a certain degree of free will... at least enough to hold semi conscious thoughts, and LIKING the experience is an issue that is presented in both scenarios.

It is an interesting idea. And the concept is probably more satirical (yes, I just called Futurama satirical, deal with it!) and thought provoking (Woooo... Thought provoking too...) than I could compute with my minuscule mind right now.

But back to my main point.

If the common conscious thing is true, what do you think it is telling us now?

Globalna wioska, świat w którym żyjemy, aż prosi się o cięty i złośliwy komentarz. Taki który będzie zmuszał do myślenia zarazem zatruwając życie jego czołowych, głupiutkich maskotek. Gwiazdy kina, muzyki, politycy chcących zmieniać świat na lepsze, wielkie gesty, wielkie zmiany, cały ten szum coraz trudniej znieść. Czasem warto wypowiedzieć się o nich grubiańsko i chamsko, tak jak na to zasługują. Jaką cenę ponoszą nieraz ludzie głoszący swe opinie w taki sposób dobrze wiemy - zostają wrzuceni w niszę, lub skreśleni z życia publicznego - stają medialnymi persona non grata. Dlatego takie mocno krytyczne komentarze warto przykrywać duuużą dawką humoru i umowności, takim sprytnym kamuflażem posługują się już od dawna kabarety i... kreskówki.
Seriale animowane przeszły niesamowitą metamorfozę od słodkich obrazów o konikach na łące do emitowanych w późnych godzinach obrazoburczych tworów zatopionych w masskulturze. Sam bardzo cenię takie twory, bo pod warstwą (dość grubą) prostactwa zawierają sporo zarówno zmuszających do myślenia jak i prześmiesznych stwierdzeń, stanowiąc miły masaż mózgu. Gatunkiem rządzą oczywiście amerykanie, posiadając i najwięcej rzeczy do wyśmiania ;) i największe medium którym się mogą posługiwać – ich kablówka nie dość że posiada niewyobrażalną liczbę kanałów (w przeciętnym domu ma się wybór około 130!) to jeszcze są w niej stacje takie jak MTV czy Comedy Central. Wśród tego urodzaju wyłowiłem jakiś czas temu coś dla siebie. Drawn Together, bo o nim mowa, przedstawia 8miu zupełnie różnych bohaterów wrzuconych do wspólnego kreskówkowego domu. Pierwsze animowane reality show stało się faktem!

Będę brał Cię w aucie

Cały zamysł i oryginalność tego obrazoburczego cartoon’a to realizacja bardzo prostego pomysłu: wrzucić w jedno miejsce jak najwięcej różnych charakterów i obserwować jakie relacje się miedzy nimi nawiążą. A, że ekipa składa się prawdziwych z uciekinierów z domu opieki psychicznej, to bywa wyjątkowo ciekawie. Każdy z nich przedstawia inny kanon klasycznego bohatera. Kanon oczywiście ujęty w tak krzywym zwierciadle jak tylko może być krzywe zwierciadło. Animowany wielki brat przed niczym nie musi się hamować, a jego zadania bywają niesamowicie okrutne, tak samo jak zwierzenia głównych bohaterów.
Być może Simpsonowie i South Park przetarli już szlaki, pewnie Futurama i Family Guy są u na ileś razy bardziej znane, ale mnie najbardziej zdobyło właśnie Drawn Together. Dzięki swej niezwykłej dynamice, wielowątkowości i temu, że może zdarzyć się w nim absolutnie wszystko.

Już sama konwencja, zmuszenia do współ egzystencji nie pasujących do siebie, inteligentnych inaczej (naprawdę to są idioci) bohaterów będących przedrzeźnieniem disneyowskich księżniczek, komiksowych herosów czy japońskich stworków bitewnych może wydawać się atrakcyjna. Gdy się to zobaczy na ekranie skąpanym w mistrzowskim rasistowsko – seksualno – fanatycznym młynie żartów można się popłakać ze śmiechu. Owszem jest to jechanie po sprawach bolesnych dla wielu osób, ale tu dostaje się każdemu, więc nikt nie powinien poczuć się urażony a pominięty to już na pewno nie.
Wiem, że dla większości osób ten styl satyry nie wydaje się ani mądry ani śmieszny, cóż jednak poradzić na to że taki... jest :) Niszczenie wszelakich świętości wynika z cudnych potyczek między uczestnikami show. Tu troll z jaskini zgwałcił martwego smoka, ukrzyżowano żabę, bawiono się w sado maso, wkładało penisy w dziury w ścianach, wrzucano sobie tabletki gwałtu do napojów, robiono sobie sznyty na ciele, wykorzystywało też Chińczyków do niewolniczej pracy za miskę ryżu... naprawdę polecam ;)

Było na strzech w każdym z nas inna krew

Najważniejsi są oczywiście uczestnicy show:

Ling-Ling – czyli jawnie frywolne wcielenie Pikachu. Ling Ling mówi językiem którego nikt wokół nie rozumie (za to widzowie mają przetłumaczone napisy podczas jego wypowiedzi, „Ling Ling no dog! Ling Ling here to destroy all!’ to teksty na jego poziomie), jego ‘pintała!!!’ brzmi wręcz poetycko, mimo iż nie mam pojęcia co oznacza. Azjatycki stwór zaskakuje nieraz cudną puentą, zawsze wypowiadaną w tonie chińskich mistrzów kung fu znanych ze starych filmów. Jest to także prześmiewcza wersja wielu wojowników z filmów karate, pełen honoru, patosu i prostolinijny Zwykle pełni rolę maskotki, ale nieraz okazuje się postacią nadającą najwięcej barw odcinkowi. Gdy samolot którym leciał zaczął płonąć od razu wskoczył do majtek pewnej murzynki wiedząc że czarna skrzynka jest najbezpieczniejszym miejscem - mistrzostwo. Zawsze gotowy do walki do ostatniej kropli krwi, w kryzysowych chwilach zmienia się w super-sayana. Szybko zdobywa sympatię widza, do tego stopnia, że gdy jest smutny to aż chce się go pocieszyć.

Foxxy Love – wspominana pani, która miała przyjemność gościć pomarańczowego stworka między nogami. Powstała na wzór nieznanej w Polsce bohaterki kreskówki Josie and the Pussycats. Mimo to można ją śmiało zakwalifikować jako stereotypową bardzo seksowną, czarnoskórą fankę sado maso ;) Mówi piękną ‘czarną angielszczyzną’ znaną z amerykańskiej telewizji czy hip-hopowych teledysków (lub wypowiedzi Shaquila O’neila – kto słyszał kiedykolwiek jakieś zdanie sklecone przez tego pana po meczu pewnie także kwiczał ze śmiechu) na czym budowany jest jej komizm. Typowa panienka duże – uda. Zwykle ląduje na seksualnym celowniku męskiej części domowników. Biseksualna fanka masturbacji (czasem dziwnymi przedmiotami).

Princess Clara – postać która od samego początku mocno atakuje widza swymi poglądami. jest fanatyczną chrześcijanką, myśląca że od pocałunku zajdzie w ciążę a przy tym piękną księżniczką, wyrwaną wprost z baśniowych historii dla dziewczynek. Przy okazji potrafi rozbroić swymi rasistowskimi, dobroduszno - prostackimi uprzedzeniami (choćby do żydów). Jej postać pięknie ośmiesza wszelakich bogaczy zamkniętych w swych złotych klatkach, odciętych od codziennych problemów ‘zwykłych’ ludzi. Jest nawet odcinek poświęcony temu co się kryje za jej majtkami – od razu mówię, że to nie to co zwykle się widuje za kobiecymi majtkami. Odpowiedzi na wszelkie pytania szuka w biblii Dzięki niej Jezus czuwa nad każdym epizodem Drawn Together ;) Z czasem ze słodkiej idiotki zmienia się w prawdziwa sukę, choć i tak cała jej siła, dzięki której zapada w pamięć widza od pierwszego kontaktu z DT leży w fanatyzmie religijnym.

Xandir P. Wifflebottom – czołowy gej tego serialu, dzięki czemu niewybredne żarty wręcz lgną do niego. Jego wygląd kojarzy się, i słusznie, z bishonenem wprost z gry konsolowej. Xandir reprezentuje bohaterów wirtualnych światów, ciągnąc za sobą cały ich ciężki bagaż – musi choćby ratować księżniczkę ( niełatwo takiej wytłumaczyć, że ma się inną orientację ;) ) a w przypadku chęci popełnienia samobójstwa musi stracić wszystkie ‘życia’ a nie tylko jedno. Prześmieszny typ, o mentalności rozchwianej emocjonalnie nastolatki, wzorowany na samym Linku z serii the Legend of Zelda. Ciągle pyta się 'What’s going on?' i nie pojmuje zła tego świata. Powiela całkowicie stereotyp geja-cioty przez co jest jeszcze zabawniejszy i zachęca do większej krytyki oburzonych obrońców moralności i panów z koszulką w tęczę. Takie życie, jak dla mnie jest rozbrajający.

Captain Hero – chodząco – latająca parodia Superbohaterów. Co by też o nim nie napisać na pierwszy plan wysuwa się to, że jest tępy. Do tego stopnia, że pomylił dziewczynkę z kozą a jednym z jego życiowych celów było zobaczenie wielbłąda. Najczęściej raczy widza puentą zupełnie mylną i nie pasującą do sytuacji – ciężko go nie uwielbiać ;) Strasznie ekstrawertyczny, szybko też popada w euforię czy rozpacz, a jego czarne łzy to coś co bezwzględnie warto ujrzeć. Nie rozumie chyba nic z tego co się wokół niego dzieje, tworząc niesamowity klimat głupawki w tym i tak chorym serialu.
Jego przygody seksualne ciężko spisać, w każdej i tak był przekomiczny, od gejowskich zdobyczy przez zabawę łańcuchami i biczami do gruchania opóźnionej kuzynki księżniczki Clary. Posiada też najbardziej dziecinnie- głupie – tępe żarty z całej załogi, definitywnie przegięty typ. Tępy mięśniak powtarzający pierwsza klasę trzeci raz? Oto C. Hero!

Wooldoor Sockbat – persona będąca odbiciem SpongeBob’a SquarePants’a (której osobiście absolutnie nie kojarzę). Żółty twór mogący wszystko w czym przeszkadza mu niestety inteligencja i wrażliwość na poziomie zwierzaczka. Nie pasująca do niczego, dziwna, przyprawiająca o schizy postać, wklejana zawsze tam gdzie trzeba zrobić coś niemożliwego. Do tego jest taki niewinny i dobroduszny, może wcielić się w każdą postać (jak myślicie kto udzielał gejowskiego ślubu dla dobra serialu?). Dziwny, ale niejednokrotnie rozbrajający bohater tego reality show.

Toot Braunstein – symbol seksu... lat 20stych i to widać. Narysowana została w równie ‘atrakcyjny; sposób co kreskówki z początku zeszłego wieku. Do tego cała czarno biała o głosie, który najspokojniejszych zdenerwuje. Autodestrukcyjna persona która w chwilach stresu sięga po żyletkę, po sprawnym cięciu przez udo całkowicie się luzuje. Scenarzyści definitywnie się nad nią pastwią, właściwie wszystko co obrzydliwe (jakiś śluz, smród etc) to jej partia. W roli wielkiej, starej, lecz ciągle napalonej baby spełnia się niepodzielnie. W sumie Betty Boop (na której jest wzorowana) dziś by tak się prezentowała. Uwielbia się obżerać i wrzeszczeć jak wredna zgorzkniałą starucha (god’dammit!). Szkoda, że ciągle ma problem ze zrozumieniem tego czemu mężczyźni jej nie adorują. Najczęstsze gagi wiążą się z jej nadwagą i jedzeniem wszystkiego niczym buldożer, stadko meksykańców w sombrerach łykła niczym parkomat monety.

Spanky Ham – humanoidalna świnia, będąca niczym innym jak uosobieniem wszechobecnego w Internecie flashowego natręctwa. Jego jedyną miłością jest rak. Chamski, samolubny, myślący tylko o sobie i o seksie. Często rozpada się na pojedyncze piksele i bardzo często robi kaka i psi psi do ciekawych miejsc. Jest chciwy i leniwy, gdy tylko nadarza się okazja wykorzystuje innych. Jest złym charakterem (od początku do końca) tej kreskówki, szukanie u niego cech pozytywnych mija się z celem. Można go za to bardzo polubić ;) zwykle bardzo wygadany, skupiający na sobie uwagę niewybrednymi komentarzami (mądrzejszymi niż się wydają), błyskotliwe puenty to zwykle jego zadanie.

Czy stworzenie takiego skupiska patologicznych charakterów mogło się nie udać ? Oczywiście, że mogło, dlatego tym większe gratulacje dla twórców - Dave’a Jeser’a i Matt’a Silverstein’a. Naprawdę zabłysnęli i zaimponowali mi niesamowicie swym jakże trafnym sparodiowaniem tylu powszechnych w naszej codzienności postaw. Zabawa jest przednia, choć w wielu przypadkach może okazać się zbyt mocno pojechana, zwłaszcza dla ‘lubiących się obrażać’.
Skończono niestety na trzech sezonach a i je przy dużym szczęściu ‘przepchnięto’. Autorzy zakończyli współprace z Comedy Central by oddać się kolejnemu projektowi (już dla Fox Broadcasting Company), robiąc prze-pojechane widowisko. Po pewnym czasie dotarło do Polski (z wspaniałym tytułem ‘Przerysowani), choć jest jeszcze zbyt słabo wypromowane. DVD z pełnymi sezonami tez jeszcze nie można u nas skupić, tym bardziej zachęcam do szukania w sieci odcinków z oryginalnym, amerykańskich dubbingiem (jest dużo lepszy jak nietrudno się domyśleć) i sprawdzenie jak powinien od samego początku wyglądać wielki brat ;)
Ogromna dawka rysunkowej przemocy, seksu i wulgaryzmów potrafi zapewnić rozrywkę tym dla których szczytem poczucia humoru jest głośne beknięcie po obiedzie i tym którzy widzą jak okropnie komercyjną papką stał się nasz świat. Wystarczy tylko wiedzieć jak do Drawn Together podejść. Szczerze polecam sprawdzić, bo zabawa jest przednia i oryginalna.

• Arsenik och gamla spetsar: Den här filmen är helt fantastisk. Handlingen kretsar kring två tanter som tar sig an stackars ensamma ungkarlar (och tar dem ur världen för att skänka dem frid och lycka i döden). Vad som gör den här filmen så bra är de starka karaktärerna som till exempel inkluderar en bror till ovanstående tanter som tror att han är Teddy Roosevelt och gräver Panama-kanalen i källaren.
• Chocolat: En film om förändring, om att bryta mot gamla mönster. En ung kvinna kommer med sin dotter till en liten konservativ fransk by och sätter upp ett Chocolateri. Detta görs under fastan och gillas inte alls av stadens borgmästare, och det gör inte saken bättre att de nyinflyttade inte går i kyrkan. Intrigen är ganska enkel: förändring och öppenhet mot konservatism, men det är gjort på ett väldigt sött vis som nästan fick mig att gråta på slutet.
• Futurama: Benders Big Score: Filmen jag skjutit upp att se sedan den släpptes eftersom jag var orolig att den inte skulle leva upp till mina förhoppningar. Kort och gott så var den bra, ibland blev drama inslagen lite väl långa men de avlöstes oftast i sådan fall med någon helt hysterisk sekvens. Den behöll helt klart Futurama-stilen och jag ser fram emot The Beast with a Billion Backs som strax finns att köpa här i Sverige. Observera att jag är en stor Futurama-fan och kan vara lite partisk.
• Pirates of Silicon Valley: En dramatiserad dokumentär om Apple och Microsoft under deras tidiga år. Filmen visar tydligt hur pass mycket genvägar de båda företagen tog för att nå dit dom är idag. Jag tycker den lyckas vara ganska objektiv och tar ingens sida, förutom att den ger intrycket att tjuv-och-rackarspels-tiden är över (vilket kan debatteras).

Edit: 15/7 Diverse språkfixar och sedan hade jag lyckats glömma att jag såg Pirates of Silicon Valley också.

En España, aun estamos esperando el lanzamiento en DVD de la segunda película de Futurama: La bestia con mil millones de espaldas. Pero en EL CONDENSADOR DE FLUZO, hemos viajado al futuro, para traeros el trailer de arriba y algo de información de lo que será la tercera película de Futurama: El Juego de Bender.

Dicho trailer puede encontrarse en el DVD de la segunda película de Futurama, que disfrutan en EEUU desde hace semanas. En esta tercera película, nuestros protagonistas sufren algo parecido a lo que nos ocurre a los consumidores españoles... ¡el elevado precio del combustible!. Solo que en este caso, se trata de materia oscura.

Fry, Leela y Bender en su busqueda realizarán o bien un viaje al pasado a la alta Edad Media o bien un viaje a un universo alternativo lleno de fantasía con claras referencias y homenajes a Dungeons & Dragons o de El Señor de los Anillos, además de los juegos de rol (dejando a parte, el claro homenaje a El Juego de Ender).

Además, los seguidores de la ciencia ficción, tendremos entre los a George Takei (Sulu en Star Trek y Kaito Nakamura en Heroes).

Esta película se espera en EEUU para Noviembre de este año.

We at "Futurama", Twentieth Century Fox Television and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are committed to reducing our impact on climate change.

I know that it seems odd that such a large corporation would attempt to become carbon neutral, but it's true. Just last year, Twentieth Century Fox released their first carbon neutral movie, "Futurama: Bender's Big Score" (which featured a cameo by Al Gore). This year, they released their second carbon neutral film, "Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs" (which, sadly, I haven't seen - yet).

In the press release, Twentieth Century Fox included the findings of their carbon impact measurements, which shows a steadily-growing need for carbon neutrality in DVD production.

In order to become more carbon neutral, Cinram, the company behind the production of the DVDs, has utilized several energy-efficient methods, including the installation of highly efficient electric injection molding technology and a highly efficient boiler.

In addition, Cinram has taken on recycling and reuse programs in its markets. Now, all waste products are sorted in order to recycle elements for use by other industries and businesses within the community, which has now kept, at least, 98% of the facility’s waste being reused rather than disposed of in landfills.

While Twentieth Century Fox, the Futurama production offices, and Cinram have all done their part to decrease their carbon footprint, there are still some emissions that are ... well ... unavoidable. To address these, Twentieth Century Fox has entered into an agreement to purchase high-quality carbon offsets from a wind farm project in India.

As of right now, the current trend in DVD sales is the sale of television show box sets (such as Family Guy, American Dad, and 24 - all Fox shows). "Futurama", however, has set a good example of how you can create a high-quality product, without increasing the impact of climate change on our planet. Heck, there are already shows being sold DVD that utilize eco-friendly packaging (An Inconvenient Truth (Paramount Classics), The 11th Hour (Appian Way), and Living With Ed (Brentwood Communications).

Now that's what I call "guilt-free" entertainment!

Following the back-and-forth banter between the desk anchors and the helicopter reporter, one of the anchors turns to his co-anchor and says "Why don't we just use the windmills to blow all the smoke away?"

If I had been drinking I would have performed a spit take. The next thing that ran through my mind was Morbo's comment on windmills in Futurama: "WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!" (Sorry, could not find a video clip)

Despite screaming this at my TV, not one person felt the need to correct him.

I shouldn't really be surprised. The co-anchor has had her share of stupid comments too. After reporting on the use of organic honey as a treatmnet for allergies she commented: "Well, it's homeopathic and can't hurt you, so you might as well try it."

I posted yesterday on Scientician about drug interactions and herbal remidies. Anything you put into your body is a drug and will have an effect. Whether it is organic, herbal, food, homeopathic, or pharmaceutical it will have an effect. I don't know if the honey works or not, but that is hardly the point.

The truly sad part about all of this is that these people are the only local news team that I can stand watching. It would appear that (some) anchors are nothing more than talking heads designed to read from a teleprompter without any critical thought.

Futurama: Bender's Big Score

After the announcement of more new Futurama a small while back, I was looking forward to this with glee. Then, it arrived, and suddenly the experience of The Simpsons Movie came flooding back. Make no mistake, Bender's Big Score is simply one extended episode, with the gaps between jokes also extended. It's still funny in parts, but even Dr Zoidberg falling for a Nigerian scam email fails to save this from being a disappointment. Thankfully, the second release, Beast With a Billion Backs, is a much better affair, but I'll leave that for another time.

Stardust

In tenuous link mode, I saw the trailer for this when I went to see the aforementioned Simpsons movie at the cinema, and knew I had to see this movie, as it seemed to echo the fantasy greats of the 1980's, such as The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Princess Bride. Unfortunately, due to time and money constraints, I never managed to see it at the cinema, and recently picked it up on DVD.

I'm glad that I did (under the advice of my best friend Eilidh), as it's without a doubt one of the best fantasy films I've ever seen. The characters are charming and charismatic, the backdrops are breathtaking, and the story is a classic fairy-tale, unmarred by modern sensibilities. Aside from one slightly deus ex machina part towards the end, I couldn't find a single fault with this film, and even then, being a fairy-tale, I think I can forgive some previously-unexplained magic saving the day.

The Birds

A Hitchcock classic, but one that I hadn't actually seen up until tonight. Even though the effects obviously look a little dated nowadays, it's quite surprising how tense the film still manages to be. The claustrophobic nature of the small town works perfectly, and as I somehow have never had the ending spoilt for me, I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout, wondering how things were going to pan out. The film starts out my planned run-through of a collection of Hitchcock films, due to HMV having a generous boxset of about 12 films going for £25. (Plus i picked up North by North-West separately at the same time.)

So, that's three catch-ups there, and hopefully I'll be returning to my usual Music Mondays and Good Gaming Fridays soon enough. The VS System related stuff is going to remain laying low until I manage to buy some new cards, and get back into being able to actually play it.
