https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/multimedia-packages-policy

Just as I got done writing about Fedora pissing me off with this, looks like Ubuntu is headed that way.

"Ubuntu informs her about the situation, and offers an easy payment method like PayPal or other micropayment systems for the patents."

Marvelous.

"The patent owners are happy, the user is happy (she lives in legalhood), the broker also can be happy - it is quite reasonable to ask for a small fee for the broker service. Canonical maybe? Or Canonical and others - free market?"

Translation: We'll screw the user over *and* get a cut of it!

"The user can select the formats she thinks will need, and pay the patent royalties through an internet payment service with her credit card. Ubuntu installs the needed libraries with the requested codecs available, others disabled. The patent-broker service pays the royalties to the patent owners, so legal questions are solved. If the user needs other patented codecs to use, she can reconfigure her video editor, and request the needed codecs."

Everytime another random asshole encodes another random file, in another random format, you pay Ubuntu more money.

"See how everyone wins? No?This is something like a "free software legal advisor application" backed up with a network service. In the resulting setup, an Ubuntu user can
1. use free software (as in freedom) on patented algorithms legally
2. fine tune what she pays for."

How about I advise them to sod off? Yes, that works for me!

I do believe I remember Kevin Carmony mentioning that Ubuntu hired some Linspire employees...

This could have something to do with that.
Also remember that Ubuntu is being SOLD at Best Buy for $20 now, how long before they have a "premium" edition with everything for $50 and a braindead "free" edition that can't do much at all?

Last night, in a fit of not-being-able-to-sleep, I coded the core of an audio conversion script I hi

Last night, in a fit of not-being-able-to-sleep, I coded the core of an audio conversion script I hinted at in a previous post. My goal was to write a single script that would encapsulate all the processes necessary for typical (and a few atypical) conversions while remaining totally configurable. That is to say, a veritable swiss-army audio encoder. Having gotten it at least to "alpha" stage, I wanted to offer it freely to anyone looking for a similar solution. BE ADVISED THAT THE SCRIPT DOESN'T HANDLE SPACES IN FILENAMES. Yet. At least, not as far as I know.

Download bash_audio script

The UI is rather self-explanatory. At present you may batch-convert (by directory or tier of directories) WAV to FLAC, WAV to MP3, WAV to OGG, FLAC to WAV, FLAC to MP3 (preserves tags), FLAC to OGG (preserves tags), MP3 to OGG (preserves tags), and OGG to MP3 (preserves tags). To use the script, you need flac, lame, mp32ogg, mpg123 and oggenc. These can easily be acquired from most *nix repositories.

Basic Instructions

The bash_audio.sh script will write a config file (~/.bconv) on first run, provided the file is not present. All current configuration options are in that file with my current presets. The config can be set in this file manually or in the script, and you can choose whether to read the config file before a batch-convert if you've tweaked something on-the-fly that you don't want in the permanent configuration. There are two sets of variables in ~/.bconv: one for command-line options to the encoding / decoding programs and one for the "root" directories of your music libraries. When you provide directories to the system for batch-conversion (assuming you don't do your whole library at once, which is an option), you just provide the relative path above the library's "root" directory. For example:

My FLAC library is in /media/fatdisk/flac_lib/.

A sample filepath to a tune might be

/media/fatdisk/flac_lib/popular/gray_david/white_ladder/01.please_forgive_me.flac

(lib/genre/artist/album)

So, in ~/.bconv my flac_lib variable is /media/fatdisk/flaclib

And if I want to batch-convert a single album, I tell the script "n" when it asks if I want to copy the whole library, and when it asks for a folder to convert, I tell it something like this:

popular/coldplay/parachutes

If I want to convert all of Coldplay's albums in my library, then I shorten my input:

popular/coldplay

When the script asks you if you want to mirror the directory structure, if you say yes it will do precisely that - that is, mirror the whole tree under the given path from one lib to another. If you don't want that, your other option is to provide a single directory, to which the script will output all converted files. The full path should be given for this directory (i.e. /home/user/audio/stuff).

Suggestions, comments, and constructive criticisms are all welcome. If you know Bash you'll find it easy (I think) to modify the script to suit your needs. I've tried to clean it up a bit so that the entire things doesn't look like 4 AM code. I may not have been successful. In any case, happy encoding. Or decoding.

yap.. itulah kata2 pecinta cowon D2… ipod is nothing… terdengar sarcastic memang…

$ sudo apt-get install soundconverter

$ sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

gstreamer0.10-plugins-

base

gstreamer0.10-plugins-

good

gstreamer0.10-plugins-

ugly

$ sudo dpkg -i mac-3.99-u4_b3-1_i386.deb

$ sudo apt-get install flac faac faad lame mpg123 mpg321 madplay mplayer vorbis-tools

Descargamos Gnormalize de aquí
Descomprimimos e instalamos gnormalize

$ sudo ./install

Ejecutamos gnormalize:

$ gnormalize

As an avid reader of Rolling Stone magazine, I’m aware of the music industry’s struggle

As an avid reader of Rolling Stone magazine, I'm aware of the music industry's struggle since the advent of P2P networks and digital music. Do I feel sorry for the record companies and artists? Well, in a way. I still don't buy the whole sob story that Metallica and other bands were polluting MTV with back in Napster's heyday when they all tried to convince us that they would go broke. It's obvious now that it's a more serious problem than I originally thought, with thousands of record company employees losing their jobs, but that's not the main reason I feel bad. That has to do with the quality of product we're subjecting ourselves to because we don't want to pay.

MP3, WMA and AAC files are so compressed that you're likely losing 75-90 percent of the quality of the master tracks. (Kind of like pissing on a Picasso.) Like many of you, for years I was perfectly content with my MP3 files on my 2-channel stereo system while I was doing my homework, or (more likely) playing video games or glued to the computer. It was when I got older and obtained this wonderful thing called income, with which I could invest in a 5.1 channel surround system that I started to wonder why this sounded so weak.

Nowadays, it's rare to open a copy of Rolling Stone and not see a quote from a legendary record producer stating how much we are cheating ourselves with this compression. It's gotten so bad in fact, that several producers don't even attempt to perfect the sound of their albums as much as they once did because they know how few ears the master tracks will actually reach, and worse, the fraction of those that will notice the difference. Thankfully for those of us that some may call audiophiles, (although to refer to myself as such is probably an insult to the term) there is still hope. All it takes is a little extra hard drive space, a little extra time and probably (the point where most people will stop reading) a little money.

Lossless encoding is the only way to get close to the artists intended sound in digital form. Apple and Microsoft both have their hands in the lossless game (Apple Lossless Audio Codec or ALAC, which you can compress to and play on iTunes and WMA Lossless, accessible via the Zune software) and even Sony's in on it (ATRAC Advanced Lossless) but most hardcore audiophile blogs warn you to stay away from these in favor of open source codecs such as FLAC, which cannot be played in iTunes or Zune (I use Songbird). I personally can't tell a difference and I wonder if the preference has more to due with anti-corporate sentiment than actual sound quality, but I could be wrong.

There are several major drawbacks to lossless codecs, beginning with compatibility. Each codec can only be played using their respective encoders programs and hardware (unless you use Songbird or a few other open source programs) and to my knowledge there is yet to be a universal lossless codec that will play on anything. The second drawback is drive space. No matter which codec you choose, they all take up considerably more space than MP3, AAC or WMA files. Third is availability. If you're so inclined, you could search for torrent files of albums in these codecs, (which are few and far between, not that I look much...) but the safest and most available route is to buy the CD and rip it in your desired codec. Which of course, isn't free.

Just like every other choice in life, this is simply a question of priority. And my personal opinion is that the majority of people who like dabble in the dark arts of digital music collecting aren't bothered by the loss of quality and would rather miss out on the subtle, yet beautiful nuances heard in a master copy of Radiohead's "Pyramid Song". The music business has yet to find a way to recover from the financial damages caused by the digital music revolution, but I think their day will come. The art of music production however, may never be the same again.

Which i still don't have :(

Despite this i have decided to create a new page on my blog called "my mac experince" which will cover my transfer from a toshiba laptop running XP to a Lovely New Apple Macbook Pro 15". The First thing i plan to write about is the unboxing of the computer because from what i have heard apple do a damm good job at boxing their computers as i first found out with my first ipod so stay tuned for that, hopefully the computer will arrive some time this week coming up *cross fingers*

Free Music

just browsing around and i came across the "nine inch nails" website today, nine inch nails or "nin" are a widely known popular rock group that offer their recent albums in garage band format and easy download format. WHAT DID HE SAY?

yes, easy download format RIGHT OF THEIR WEBSITE i don't understand the reasoning behind it but the moment i get my internet speed back im downloading everything i can because i like nine inch nails. Most of you might not have heard of them but you will have heard their music most likely the movie "fight club" used one of their songs as their opening.

Is anyone else having playback problems with iTunes? Do a search on Google, and you'll find the answer to be "Hell YEAH!" I'm a big supporter of Apple products and services, but I'm also a fan of options in all facets of my life, especially with media. It all started a few months back while reading an article in Rolling Stone about someone (or someones..) who had become fed up with the poor audio quality of Beatles CD's and decided to rip FLAC files to their computer from their collection of pristine Beatles vinyl.

To make a very long story short, they put the files on the internet so other people could get them (search "Purple Chick Megaupload") and I went after it. I didn't know what a FLAC file was at the time, but I did know iTunes wouldn't play it, so I had to find something that would. In enters Songbird, an open-source media players from some of the guys who made Winamp and the Yahoo Music Engine. It not only handles FLAC files but also MP3 (of course), AAC, WMA, AIFF, MIDI, Apple Lossless, yadda yadda plus files with that pesky DRM crap. And the really great advantage is that since it's open-source, it's cross platform and developer friendly (not to mention free of course) and there are a plethora of extensions you can download to make it even cooler.

There's an extension to display your album art much in the same way iTunes Cover Flow does, you can scrobble your tracks to Last.fm (if your cool like me) and you can even download an extension that imports your entire iTunes library into Songbird. It doesn't play video, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

It's also visually customizable, with a variety of great skins. You can even make it look exacltly like iTunes if you so choose. There's a built in web browser, eMusic compatibility (via another extension) and you can even search for DRM-free MP3's with the SkreemR shortcut/bookmark on the sidebar.

Songbird is a great program for open-source purists and the anti-corprate big business haters out there who would rather throw their grandma in front of a train than download anything from Apple or Microsoft. (I love my grandma dearly and always protect her from trains, but a small part of me is with you.) It also seems to correct the skipping problem a lot of my tracks seem to be having in iTunes as of late. (The point at meant to get to in the opening.)

Check it out, (most of you probably have) if you hate it, its not like you paid for it.

Perhaps I ought to have titled this “how to re-import your whole CD library, originally done i

Perhaps I ought to have titled this "how to re-import your whole CD library, originally done in Windows, when your external USB drive's HFS+ partition coughs up a bowl of bits." I looked all over the internet to try to get an indication of the best or most efficient way to rip, tag, and organize my disc collection in Linux Mint. I found a lot of information, and a lot of "articles" that were really just thinly disguised spec lists of FOSS audio programs. In the end I was forced to figure it out on my own as a result of having too many options.

The good news is that, for an aspiring audiophile, EAC runs under WINE in Linux Mint (rel. 5) with no trouble. You can read a pretty concise formulation of the procedure required to make it happen here. That's the first route I went. It wasn't particularly easy from there.

See, I'm one of those wierdos who regularly keeps digital music in more than one format. I prefer "lossless" files, but the portable music players available to me (and my car CD player, that reads MP3) won't play those. Not to mention that they're bigger than lossy files. For this reason, I must have at least two formats available. My practice up to the present has been to keep FLAC on hand for home listening, MP3 for comparatively high-quality listening with devices that read no other format, and ogg for maximum compression with devices that can use it. (I do prefer to use free software and open standards whenever possible.) Properly speaking, then, I have three music libraries to manage. And I have a lot of music.

After some experimentation, I discovered that the familiar batch conversion tools that I intended to use in order to keep all these libraries straight (especially tagging in all those formats) would have to run through EAC. Those tools (WinXP versions) were a lot fussier in WINE. It's important to understand that I was trying to avoid, at all costs, the need to write a bunch of file- and filename-conversion scripts. Originally I began ripping the discs in EAC and pulling the raw .wavs over into Sound Converter. I quickly realized that Sound Converter didn't give me the flexiblity over the command-line encoding options that I needed, so that plan was out. I further realized that no tagging was being preserved in the EAC -> Sound Converter process, so I implemented a third step and a third piece of software, EasyTag, to (hopefully) pull info from CDDB. By this time, managing the directory structure and file info in just one format was a hassle. What's more, I could see I'd need to add another software step or two before it was a working chain. I dropped back to punt.

I thought, "Surely there's an easier way." There is. But it doesn't involve EAC at all, and that kept me from using it for a while. When I finally gave in it was a good day. The piece of sofware that will do it all for you (with most of the tweaks you want) is called grip. Grip works, and I'm glad. It uses cdparanoia to rip discs, unless you tell it to use another program, and that's fine with me. As far as I can tell, comparing rip-for-rip with EAC, cdparanoia makes a really accurate copy (provided your drive doesn't cache). In fact, you can tell cdparanoia to be stupidly accurate if you want. Grip encodes to FLAC, mp3, ogg, aac, and more, and it gives you full control over the encoding options. I just realized that I'm sounding like an ad for grip, which isn't intentional, but it's really so much better and easier - even easier than what I was doing in Windows. At least, it's easier while managing one format library at a time, which is what most sensible people do. With grip, once your "config" tabs are set up, you can reduce the whole process to a few clicks per CD (or less) and a sanity check on the autotagging. Grip creates linux-friendly filenames for your tracks and automatically puts audio files into a reasonable directory structure, which you have control over through tag editing prior to ripping. What a great idea.

Now I've arrived at the final juncture of library organization #1 much faster than I had hoped as a result of both grip and amaroK, a fully-featured and functional software jukebox (that's the fastest description I could concoct). But I'm still going to have to do at least one of the things I was originally trying to avoid: write a script to convert the FLAC library I have been recording to both MP3 and ogg, keeping the directory structure intact. Oh well. Some things can't be avoided. Unless there's an approach out there that hasn't turned up under any of my query strings. In any case, at least I can listen to a shuffled version of my entire lossless music collection while I write the script...

[ Note: if you didn't do a good job with your directory structure, amaroK will fix it all up for you (that's putting it lightly) with the "Manage Files..." --> "Organize Files..." command in the right-click menu. But beware running that command on your whole collection. It blows your CPU to bits. (Yes, intended.) ]

We are used with well-known music players such as amarok or rhythmbox. But what other options are out there? After a little research I made a list with six audio players for linux that are not very well known, but could replace some of the top players:

Ariado Player

This software is a little music player allowing you to listen to music while being on a computer. Light and very portable, it runs on Linux, BSD, Mac and Windows download here ...

.

Aqualung

(my favorite from this list) Advanced music player for GNU/Linux, also running on FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Microsoft Windows. Plays audio CDs, internet radio streams, podcasts and soundfiles in just about any audio format and has the feature of inserting no gaps between adjacent tracks. download here ...

Gimmix

Graphical music player daemon (MPD) client written in C using GTK+2. Gimmix is very simple and easy to use, yet offers many features to make your audio experience a pleasant one. Gimmix main features are: Simple and Clean Interface; Compact and full view modes; Library Browser; Library search; Playlist management; ID3v2 Tag editing support; Support for controlling gimmix. download here ...

MoreAmp

Audio player, transcoder and cd ripper for Mac OS X, OS 9, Windows, Unix, and Linux. Plays and creates ogg, flac, mp3, aac, m4a, mp4, wav, and aif, and plays wma. 31-band equalizer, repeat loop, variable pitch/tempo, ram or ramdisk preload. download here ...

reBMP

REturn of the Beep Media Player ! Key words: Linux, cue, ape, flac, lyrics. it bases on the beepmp-0.9.7.1, and i hacked some code, it now natively supports APE, FLAC with cuesheet list. Added a lyric panel to show lyrics when playing. Enjoy yourself mus. download here ...

Sonic-Rainbow

I this could potentially be well worth downloading and using. I was working on a serious project for a while to create something similar to this, but actually even more advanced. Still, the difference is, these guys did it and if it does what it says, if the interface is user friendly, etc... this could be much better than using iTunes.

I have to wait 84 minutes though to download it, cuz I just downloaded some super rare German Jazz album (curious to hear that little nugget).

Check it and if you use it, come back and let us know what you think!

MediaMonkey is a music manager and media jukebox for serious music collectors and iPod users. It catalogs your CDs, OGG, WMA, MPC, FLAC, APE, WAV and MP3 audio files. It looks up missing Album Art and track information via Freedb and the web, and includes an intelligent tag editor and an automated file and directory renamer to organize your music library. It includes a CD ripper, CD/DVD Burner, and audio converter for saving music, and manual or automated playlist editors for creating music mixes. Its player automatically adjusts volume levels so that you don't have continually fiddle with the volume control and supports hundreds of Winamp plug-ins and visualizations; or if you prefer, it can use Winamp as the default player. It also includes portable audio device synchronization that allows you to synch tracks and play lists with devices such as the iPod and other portable audio devices.

The New York Times publishes an article on this new music format on February 21, 2008. “Like M

The New York Times publishes an article on this new music format on February 21, 2008. "Like MP3, FLAC is a compression standard for music files, but unlike MP3, it is lossless, meaning it doesn’t degrade sound quality." New York Times 'Put Another File in the Jukebox, Baby'

Is this a big deal? To people with perfect pitch and incredible ears yes. To people with everyday hearing who just want to hear a good song that is audible (the majority of the world), no. Right now most portable devices do not support FLAC so there is no need to worry. It is just something I want to make my readers aware of.

New music formats are constantly being developed. However, that does not necessarily mean that technology can support the format. A great example of this is Windows' new operating system Vista. Vista sucks up a lot more RAM and processing power than it's predecessor Windows XP. Most computers made prior to Vista are not powerful enough to support Vista. On the same note ipods and other Mp3 players cannot support FLAC.

So where does this leave you? Just make a mental note for now. As FLAC becomes more popular you will starting seeing it on the news or in commercials. Thus far Apple, Dell, and Sony have not released FLAC players so no worries. If they do, check with the online retailers who distribute your music (like itunes) to see if they are offering your music in FLAC. More than likely they would notify you via email.
