Garfield Ridge's Best Weekend Ever

Best Work Ethic: Chicago Police. I've noticed a lot more patrolling around my neighborhood, awesome. Even at night I've seen a lot more squad cars. I wonder if it's because something recently happened in the LeClaire Courts, which is usually the case. Also, for the past two nights I've been hearing a lot of sirens and squad cars flying down Cicero Ave., toward The Courts, of course. As I'm writing this I hear sirens. Like every half-hour, no shit. Seriously, what is going on?

Best Dressed: On my way to Midway Airport I saw three Asian monks going to the post office on Friday. They were wearing orange togas or something; like the monks you see on TV. I was waiting for them to bust out in some crazy karate move. That was awesome.

Best Place To Find Hotties, Men and Women: The Jewel on Archer was packed with hotties on Saturday, including me-just kidding, but seriously. I've noticed that though. There is always some good eye candy when I go to Jewel.

Best Fundraising Event: On Saturday while jogging around MDW I saw a Channel 5 camera man walking down 55th and I asked what was with the cameras. He told me there was a fundraising event at Southwest Airlines' hanger called a "plane pull." I later saw on the news that the event was held by Ronald McDonald House Charities and there were teams of people competing to see who can pull the plane the farthest. If I would've known that in advance I would've gone and checked it out. Maybe next year.

Best Barbecue: While walking around MDW the other day I came across the landscapers who work around the airport. They were barbecueing by their office/workplace. They yelled across the street for me to come over, but I told them no thanks because I'm on a diet. They had a lot of food and it smelled good too. Maybe next year I'll join 'em, if they're still working there.

Best Coach: I saw the guy who I believe is a Chicago police officer riding his bike around MDW again. It's been a while since I've seen him and I kind of missed him(in a platonic way). Whenever he sees me walking he is always motivating me to run and it helps me out a lot. I feel bad about what I said earlier, calling him a dork because he stops every so often and talks to me. He's not a dork; I'm sure he means well and he's a nice guy, but I'm still not interested in him. It's me who's the dork, but being a girl is rough and being a pretty girl is even harder(I'm not conceited, just stating the facts) because men are always trying to get into my pants. So every guy I meet I'm always on the defense because I know they're only after sex. I'm not a prude, I just want the guy who's willing to work hard for it and lately I haven't found much of those.

Best Looking Guy: Some white guy who runs around the airport. He's tall, in great shape, and has blue eyes. He's my type-physically, except he shaves his head, which is weird because he's a young guy. I've seen him twice and we nod and smile, but since we're both running I don't think we'll ever get a chance to talk. Besides, I don't know if he's interested in me or if he has a girlfriend. Oh well.

Best Chicago Baseball Team: The White Sox, of course. If we don't end up winning the series at least we won one playoff game. Take that Cubbies. God, I hate the Cubs.

Best Places to Bump Into People You Know Around Garfield Ridge: So over the weekend I've bumped into so many people I know at the Jewel, post office, and the gas station on 50th and Central. I saw my ex's father, my former neighbor-twice, a lady who works at the Dunkin Donuts on 50th and Central, and a couple of distant friends. These places are the majority of where I bump into people who I haven't seen in a long time. Also, when I'm driving around doing errands or jogging I see people I know driving around Archer and Central. It's always that area for some reason. I guess that's the heart of Garfield Ridge. I just hope I don't bump into any ex-boyfriends, that would suck.

Yesterday, I went to Tuf Tuf, a not-so-reputed second hand book store on the South of Antwerp, my neighbourhood. It's a real drag to hunt for books there: not enough space, books not arranged alphabetially, battered copies. But sometimes gems are to be found, I picked up a copy of Midnight Movies there once. Aside from this, they specialize in erotica. I spotted two Georges Pichard books yesterday priced at €86 each. I don't think I've mentioned the canonical Pichard here before, his work is super-relevant today, as the good people at Kink.com have brought his ultra-pornographic vision to life.

Back to the subject at hand, me at Tuf Tuf yesterday. I bought Moderne Liefde, an anthology of short stories which previously appeared in Playboy Magazine (with a story by Borges, whose only hint at eroticism I've yet seen has been in his story Ulrica), Striptease en Erotiek[1] (a Dutch language translation of Strip-tease et érotisme[2]), De Leidraad (Le Lien) by Vanessa Duriès, and Erotiek by Francesco Alberoni.

Above, I've shown you the covers (above the translation I bought, below its original) of Strip-tease et érotisme, the actual object of this post.

Histoire et philosophie du strip-tease : Essai sur l' érotisme au music-hall, as its full title reads, was written by François des Aulnoyes, to my knowledge one of the very few books he's written. The book deals with striptease, what makes it interesting is that it was published in 1957, strictly speaking a couple of years before the sexual revolution. The text is hogwash and very briefly invokes Lucien Lévy-Bruhl, Émile Durkheim, Vilfredo Pareto and Freud, these are the only sources mentioned. Its historic overview also mentions Janine Jan and Anne Bruneau as 19th century predecessors to French striptease.

What makes the book interesting are the photographs by Roland Carré, see the cover shot of Huguette Delorme above. Like I said, the pre-sexual revolution mode, with all reference for example to pubic hair airbrushed away (this was the pre-Photoshop-age).

Who was Roland Carré? The only person I know who can answer that question is Au carrefour étrange.

Via today's post by John Coulthart comes the artwork of presumedly British graphic designer David Pelham. Most Ballardians, says Ballardian and John Coulthart prefer the 1974 Penguin paperbacks covers by Pelham. Here is a Flickr gallery[1] of Pelham's work.

Pelham also designed the cover of the British edition of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, which has been replaced by the less interesting one shown below.

So, one of my darlings (endwithstyle) was doing legwork for me. And the best part was that I didn't even have to ask her to! She just decided to google it up and stumbled this gem about everyone's favorite netminder. Dustin Tokarski's favorite television show is Reba. Really Toka? That's what you would want to watch on a day off? See, I would peg you for picking the Office. Or maybeeeeee The Hills. Some of the Chiefs seem to really like that show. I don't get it. I do not see the appeal of Lauren Conrad. But some dudes think she is hot. Whatever. And I know Audrina has quite a rack and wears lowcut shirts. Oh, wait....you guys watch it on mute, huh?

I forgot to bring home my program last night but on the back page there was a Q and A with Toka. The answers I can remember off the top of my head...As for who he would want to play him in a movie, Jim Carey (how vintage). His favorite sport is golf (I knew that). If he could see ANY concert, the Spice Girls. Clearly a goalie after my heart. Whether in jest or not, it just so happens the Spice Girls on the top of my list for concerts I would see. They fall somewhere between seeing Duran Duran (again) and The Clash (oh Joe Strummer I miss you). I mean, I need to know more. What is his favorite Spice Girls single? Did he support the Girls after the departure of Ginger? Does he know that one day, I plan to dress as Ginger in Union Jack dress and boots for Halloween?
