Ok, so it isn't Vogue. It's better. It's Variety!

The Bean has been asked to be the "covergirl" for the charity that helps with her myolectric prosthesis. Today is the photo session where they will take pictures of her using her arm at her weekly therapy sessions. The Variety Myoelectric Center will be putting her on the cover of a tri-fold brochure to help raise awareness of the comprehensive program that was designed to inform, support, and literally lend a hand to children like Beanie.

We are so excited for two reasons. First, we are thrilled that she is considered such a success story that she can be the "poster child" for the organization. And secondly, even though she doesn't understand it yet, I look forward to the day that I can tell her that she was able to personally help in giving back to the charity that is making her progress possible. It is a win-win for everyone.

So wish us luck as we strike a pose today. We hope to capture some inspiring moments that will prompt people to reach into their pockets and pitch some coins (or big fat dollar bills preferably) into Variety's bucket.

Now if only I knew what she was going to wear! Off to the closet!

Bihar has been hit by a terrible flood. It is one of the worst disasters to strike the country. It is worse than the Tsunami or the Gujarat Earthquake. Several million people have been affected. Entire districts - villages and towns - have been washed away. The number of people dead is not even known.

There are over 6 lakh people living in 200 relief camps. In Saharsa district alone there are 2 Lakh people in 68 relief camps. Similar numbers are living in camps in Madhepura, Supaul, Araria, Purnia and Katihar districts. And many more (those who are better off and have relatives and friends outside) have fled these districts.

AID INDIA’s Bihar team has been on the field organizing rescue and relief efforts in the affected districts. So far we have been able to organize some rescue operations and have provided food, milk for children, and medical support for children in several camps.

But this in not all. They need to raise more than 100,000 USD to carry on the relief operations.

We at Pilani have tried to do our part by directing funds generated by the Students Union of BITS Pilani towards helping the AID Bihar team - and even though the amount generated may be meagre we hope to have changed the mindset of a lot of people along the way and put in that fund in a place in which it is deemed to be utilised to the fullest capacity. We sincerely thank the Students Union in helping us out so actively and having let us put forward our case for AID Bihar's efforts in the first place. We are also trying to devise ways to send other relief material like old clothes to the AID Bihar team.

Eight years ago, I thought of John McCain as one of the more honorable republicans. As we, the people of the United States get to know him better each day of his deteriorating campaign, I realize that my assessment of McCain years ago was wrong.

Due to the nearly 10-point lead Obama has in the national trend polls, McCain & Co. are getting desperate. The republican McCain campaign is now sending Sarah Palin out on an attack-dog mission, designed to distract American people from focusing on important issues. Why? Because John McCain loses on every important issue facing the people of the United States.

The most recent act of shame committed by the McCain-Palin campaign came in the form of freakishly-inexperienced Sarah Palin's claim that Obama has friendly ties to terrorists. Not only is this untrue, this is a pathetic attempt to boost their losing numbers. The Obama Campaign has responded to Palin's claim with force.

I'd like to ask that all readers of this post do three simple things:

Contact the McCain campaign to let them know how disgusted you are with their gutter politics. You can reach them at www.johnmccain.com/contact

Forward to your friends, and ask them to tell McCain to quit stooping this low.

After contacting John McCain, continue to pay attention to the real issues that we are facing.

I've posted my email that I sent to the McCain campain below.

We the American people are very disgusted with your campaign. Regarding the recent claim made by Palin that Obama has friendly ties with terrorists, we only see it as a sickening desperate attempt to distract us. Finish your campaign honorably.

If you would like to donate to Obama, or check out how he represents positive change for our country, go to: www.barackobama.com

October 3, 2008

By Cathy Church - Out on the Independent Campaign Trial #2

(Marquette County, Michigan) - Republic Township Community Services is having a 50th anniversary celebration all day long in the scenic, yet small town of Republic, MI, 45 miles to our west.

One hundred 32 x 48 signs are ready for pickup in Escanaba, MI 60 miles to the south.

Ads needs to be approved and paid for if they are going to make next week's Action Shopper.

Northern Michigan University is having a Homecoming Parade. Where are the bags of candy to pass out to the kids?

We need 200 metal stakes and 400 zip ties to secure the signs to the poles.

Simon and Cosmo are getting cranky.

I need to order plane tickets for out of town family.

Absentee ballot requests are flooding each of the 3 cities and 19 townships- how do I get them? By fax? The fax machine answers voice calls and ignores fax signals.

The Churchmobile needs to go to the repair shop for four hours one day soon.

TV commercials must be reviewed and authorized.

A dear friend's child is facing serious surgery.

Victims are emailing saying they support the campaign.

What is, and how do we get 'tagged' on Facebook?

How is the letter campaign going?

When and where and how do we plant all these signs?

Team members want to know where we are going tomorrow.

Are we going to take the Team's dogs and rabbits to the Blessing of the Animals? Will they all get along during the ride to the church?

Harvest dinner in Big Bay? Tailgate Party at NMU? Farmer's Market? Church Bazaar?
Come on, come on.

Which way do we go, go, go?

* Editors note: Longtime advocate for the rights of victims of domestic violence, attorney Cathy Church is running as an independent candidate for prosecutor of Marquette County, Michigan.

October 2, 2008

By Cathy Church - Out on the Independent Campaign Trial #1

(Marquette County, Michigan) - We all have ideas of what it means to be a candidate for public office and how a campaign should be run. I know I did before my name appeared on the General Ballot as an Independent candidate for the Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney position.

Candidates are those starched white shirts layered with spiffy red ties all wrapped up in custom made suits. Campaigns are a seamless and effortless series of photo ops and fundraisers, where the candidate is always fashionably late and donors pay $100 or more per plate to patiently eat wilted lettuce while waiting for a personal appearance.

Get the picture?

Well guess what? Those images are wrong. All wrong.

I am a candidate. No starched shirt here; hell, I can barely keep the red linen shirt carrying my embroidered name, Cathy C. Church and slogan Your Vote is Your Voice free of wrinkles for more than 5 minutes.

Do you know how hard it is to iron linen? And how quickly it wrinkles?

So far, half a dozen of my supporters have ironed this perpetually crinkled shirt on my kitchen counter.

I have no idea where the ironing board went.

I run my campaign. Nothing about it is effortless and the seams are more like fissures and crevasses.

The center piece of my campaign is the mini-wini, or churchmobile.

It’s a 1988 Winnebago, 4 cylinder 21 foot self-contained motor home.

While I drive from campaign event to event, supporters like Elaine and Judy sit in the back, where the dining table used to be, and make baggies of dog treats containing campaign cards of Packer or Lions’ football schedules.

Take a corner too fast and Milk Bones go flying. Little Gordita, Elaine’s half Chihuahua, half Yorkie can barely maintain her position on the seat cushion next to the rear window.

Cosmo, our 120 lb. chocolate lab, usually rids shotgun, side by side with me.

Unless, of course, his border collie girlfriend, Zoey, is also along for the ride. Zoey always evicts Cozzy from his assigned seat (human supporters never get the chance to ride shotgun if Cozzy is along for the ride) and he always defers to her.

Finally, Simon, the old yellow lab of the group, climbs up on the backseat and stares at the passing world the Churchmobile has left.

The four footeds were initially very welcomed in the Churchmobile but they got a little rambunctious in their travels.

At one event, both of the labs managed to sneak out of the vehicle and head into a party store.

It took some time before their absence was noticed. I’m not sure, but I think they managed to pick up a few illicit treats along the way.

After that escape, the dogs’ travels are limited to their morning walks before the campaign day begins.

Today it was cool enough to forgo the linen shirt and wear the embroidered fleece pull-over. Yippy! It rained during the dog’s ride this morning and the wipers merrily clipped along.

Later, as it poured while I rode along with Liz, staff assistant to our US Senator, from one event to another, the wipers refused to budge. At times, the world beyond the windshield was a watercolor mosaic.

Today, that’s what a campaign means to me.

(with deepest apologies to Eugene Field)

Wynken and Blynken are four beady eyes,
And Nod is a wooden head.
Their crooked smiles feed such sweet lies,
We're left drowsy and overfed.
So shut your eyes and hear their prayers
For wonderful things-to-be,
Of wars and wells and polar bears
That sink in a melting sea.
Or open your eyes and boot these three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.

I play to win. I do whatever it takes to win. If I have to fuck my opponent to win I'll do it. If I have to destroy my opponent I won't give it a second thought. -- John McCain, spoken before a gathering of GOP operatives at the National Republican Senatorial Committee where McCain outlined his campaign strategy in his Senate race

______________________________

The Truth vs. "Whatever it Takes"

Joe Biden was right when he said, "past is prologue." Anyone who liked Bush's campaign tactics in 2000 has surely liked the integrity with which the Bush-Cheney Administration has run our country over the past 8 years. Similarly, anyone who likes John McCain's 2008 campaign tactics, and likes a governor who thumbs her nose at court orders during an ethics investigation, and likes a VP candidate with a deplorable First Amendment record, who forbids media access, also surely liked the past 8 years, and would surely like the the style of a McCain-Palin Administration. By the same token, anyone who has appreciated the integrity with which Obama and Biden have run their campaign would surely like the integrity of an Obama-Biden Administration. Past is prologue. The challenge for Americans over the next 31 days will be to not fall for the bullshit, the lies and the fearmongering that got us into this predicament in the first place. Because, make no mistake: it's about to get real ugly, real fast.

We could as easily hear that Obama bites the heads off kittens for breakfast, as we might hear that Obama runs with terrorists [EDITOR'S NOTE: believe it or not, I wrote this before hearing about Sarah Palin's "Obama-palling-around-with-terrorist" smear, linked to below] , he is a terrorist, or that his children are terrorists. They're gonna "ramp up" (to use Sarah's idiom) the fearmongering and try to scare the hell out of us, the same way Bush-Cheney have been doing for the past 7 years. They're gonna accuse Obama of things I can't even guess or imagine, but you can be sure the smears will be peppered with words like Muslim, Islamic extremists, weakness, naiveté, appeasement, un-American, unpatriotic, socialism, terrorists, 9-11, jihad, black militant, mushroom clouds and WMDs, not to mention William Ayers, Tony Rezko and Rev. Wright. The McCain team is gonna say horrible, reprehensible things.

And they'll do reprehensible things, too, like trying to trick voters into screwing up their votes. The GOP and the McCain campaign are already doing this in some places (see links, below), targeting their efforts toward blacks, Hispanics and other other ethnicities, as well as the victims of home foreclosure. The ultimate irony is that they are now trying to paint Obama with the same brush, accusing him of their very tactics. Like McCain said: Whatever it takes. It's only gonna get worse. And if world events go to hell someplace on the map, that's gravy for McCain, because he can pull out his tough-on-terror persona. It's gonna be a rough ride, folks. If you have any extra money, fight the smears by donating to the Obama campaign or the Democratic Party. If you hear a new smear, you can either report it or get the straight poop at Obama's "Fight the Smears" page.

Above all, remember: No matter how convincing the package, a hoodwink is still a hoodwink is a hoodwink....

Booman Tribune: McCain Campaign Enticing Voter Fraud?

[googlevideo=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5965670944815984616&hl=en]

ABOVE: This 90-minute video from 2006, titled, "American Blackout" chronicles recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement witnessed in the 2000 and 2004 elections, while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who not only took an active role in investigating these election debacles but also found herself in the middle of one after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9-11 terrorist attacks. This history of voter disenfranchisement takes us back to the passage of the Voters Rights Act of 1965, which gives some perspective on how hard-fought are these rights that have been painfully robbed during the last two elections. An excellent, eye-opening film -- pertinent to October 2008 -- and well-worth the time spent watching it. Here, again, Joe Biden's warning bears repeating: Past is prologue.

Note: If the above video malfunctions, it is available in 9 parts here on YouTube

___________________________________

FOOTNOTE:

A Brief History of the McCain-Palin Campaign:

Nothing from nothing leaves nothing

First, McCain tried to run on a thinly-disguised clone of the Bush-Cheney platform, which went largely unnoticed during the fracas of the Obama-Clinton primary season. By late summer, with the Republican Convention looming, the poll numbers showed that Americans were taking real notice of the Bush-Cheney McCain platform. The success of the Democratic Convention, plus Obama's sage choice of a running mate only compounded McCain's sinking numbers. In a desperate move to fill his platform with something/anything new, the McCain team hijacked Obama's platform of hope, change and service. Simultaneously, and in a similar spirit of desperation, McCain threw Palin on the ticket, thinking beauty might trump brains. His choice of a running mate proved to be an utter failure in every possible regard, except one: she is, like McCain, a consummate liar. This was a good thing because, having lost the coattails of the Bush-Cheney legacy on which to ride, their platform was empty, save a few old war stories and tall fisherman's tales about maverick feats. Between the two of them, there were enough lies to give the appearance of having legitimate records on which to pontificate during their speeches. But this, too, failed, as "the google" gave the public ready access to the facts. Having finally used every possible resource (except for the truth) the McCain-Palin campaign decided to abandon all pretense of running a presidential campaign and to, instead, spend the next 31 days destroying their opponent, in the hope (a funny word, in this context) of scaring the voters back into their camp.

The Light Gives Heat foundation who not only help people in need in African region but also are there to listen to them, to know them and then help.

Here is an extract of their mission statement and I find it wonderful:

But what if we were different? What if we were listeners instead of simply doers and what if we took a back seat to what is already being stirred in local people’s hearts and souls? What if we let their light shine? We have a feeling that if that were the case, their light would spread like wild fire – spreading hope from the inside out.

Hello Everyone,

Mimi is a female Chihuahua and is about 20 years old (human years). Mimi very loving and one happy dog. She still has more life ahead of her than what everyone else thinks. She's still energetic and loves to get her belly rubbed.

This is Mimi's Story:

On September 28, 2008 my boyfriend and I went to his relatives house where they have been watching Mimi until the other relative got her a new home. For the few days she was staying there she only ate a bone and a pizza crust. We knew they had wanted to put her down because she was getting too old and they couldn't take care of her. They were saying if they weren't to find her a home they will put her down. We feel that's not right. So we took her in to save her life. When we brought her in the house, we noticed she is very skinny, has arthritis really bad on her back legs, has very long nails, and what is looks like it might be a cyst or a tumor in her throat. It looks like it can be the size of a baseball, no lie. When she gets her belly rubbed it disappears, like it went in. She has a breathing problem also, and we think that's the problem to that. She doesn't like to eat dog food only human food. Little by little we are having her eat dog food mixed a little bit with human food until she gets used to eating her kind of food. I'm going to bring her to PetsMart for a regular check up and to get her nails clipped and ears cleaned. Now I know by not even the visit they are going to say she needs surgery and other medication. The surgery alone will put a hole in my pocket, and then the medication after that. This is going to be a hard one for me.

Now this is where you nice people come in. If you can from the kindness of your heart, please donate money for Mimi's future surgery or you can copy the URL and post it on your blog, myspace, or any site like that. She's old, but still has it in her. I will like for this to go all out for people to see.

I don't like to put a dog down only because she is getting too old. I hope you all understand.

The following is not written by me, but by a protege turned friend:

Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page!!!! First of all thanks for taking the time to visit my page, I know how busy our schedules can get. I would like to inform you that I'm training to participate in the Rock 'N' Roll San Antonio Full Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us in Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Some may say I have lost my mind, but I would say I have found a piece of my heart (cheesy but true)! On November 16th, I will challenge myself to run 26.2 miles at the Rock 'N' Roll San Antonio Full Marathon in San Antonio, Texas! My goal is to raise $4,000 of which 100% is tax deductible and 75 cents out of every dollar benefits The Society and its mission. To do this, I need your help!!! That’s why I am asking you to please contribute towards a great cause, one I believe in and am willng to work very hard for your contribution. My heart, mind, and muscles will help me accomplish the physical goal of completing the marathon, but accomplishing my financial goal cannot be done without financial sponsors.

You may be thinking—“Hey, I know her. She’s not exactly an athlete—and she’s going to run 26.2 miles? Good luck (you’re going to need it).” First of all I am slightly offended (I’ve always thought I was at least a decent athlete lol). And secondly , no I’m not suddenly crazy, and yes, I am going to run 26.2 miles. I run several miles and in exchange, people and families suffering from the effects of Leukemia, Lymphoma and other destructive blood cancers get to SURVIVE!! I can't think of a better reason to challenge myself. I have had the opportunity to see the power of the work being done by this wonderful society and the lives that have been touched by the Team in Training program and it's amazing.

I have committed myself to raise $4,000.00 by November 1st. I am going to need your help in this effort! Please know that donations of ANY size are appreciated more than you know. Take a moment and choose the amount you would like to donate. This website is very secure, but if you would rather pay cash or use a check please feel free to do so. Please make the checks out to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. You may call or email me so I can pick it up or just send your donation to the address below:

Check Source for address

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. I repeat, anything and everything is greatly appreciated.

I hope you will visit my web site often and share it with your friends and family. Thank you so much for your support!

Sincerely,

Jenny Marie Mora

(source)

Please help her with her goal. Donate as much as you can, pass around this around to your friends.

There should be a description in Wikipedia for Paul Newman, instead of "An Academy Award winning and seven time Academy Award nominated American actor, film director, entrepreneur, humanitarian and auto racing enthusiast..." It should simply, instead, just say "Man."

I've been blessed with healthy children, but I thank God there are people like him who has shared his good fortune helping those who aren't so lucky.

I just spent half a year's pay getting my hair cut yesterday. Then I realized how many people and children there are without hair at all. I decided to donate to Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.

I hope you do, too. Bypass Starbucks today... send it here instead

Call it getting good Karma or just being nice - nothing makes you feel more warm and fuzzy than giving time or money to a charity. But, how do you know how much of that money actually goes to the cause in question? How do you know if they really do what they say they do?

[caption id="attachment_108" align="aligncenter" width="480" caption="Charity Navigator - Section of Home Page"][/caption]

Go to CharityNavigator.org and find out the full scope on the charity you are thinking of donating to. They have a large database of charities and can tell you how much of every dollar you give is actually put to use vs. getting eaten up by management and fund raising expenses. They rank each charity and provide a ton of useful data. You can even use them as a charity search engine to find new charities to donate to. Give it a try.

UPDATE: Saturday, October 4th, 2008 -

I have been serving the residents of San Leon, Texas now all this week. We visit for several hours twice daily in one of the Salvation Army Mobile canteen trucks to serve fresh hot meals for lunch and dinner. We have averaged about 1,00 meals a day at the San Leon Community Disaster Relief Center at the site of a small Baptist church, along with Houston Food bank, the American Baptist Association and local volunteers. Total meals served from our command center are over 6,500 a day all from mobile canteen crews like ours. Total for all the Louisiana and Texas disaster incident commands are more than 1.2 Million hot meals since relief efforst began a month ago, first for Gustav, then Ike.

There are thousands of residents whose homes were completely submerged by the 12 to 20 foot storm surge and battered by Hurricane Ikes category two winds. Even now, electrical power service has not been restored. There is no ice, clean water, local sources of food (the nearest supermarket open is more than 20km). Entire home contents have been lost. Most homes in San Leon were small and simple, many were trailer homes and wood frame houses. Lives have been lost. We pray for them all.for The majority of residents in San Leon are Vietnamese America, and Hispanic. Most don't have insurance and no FEMA cash support has been received yet. Many families with young children are sleeping in their cars outside their gutted homes. Some were homeless and living rough before the storm and now are severely at risk having lost even their open air campsites and squats and what few belongings they had.

These photos from Sanleontexas.com (maintained by a colourful local resident) are only a few showing both the destruction and the will to survive and overcome. I'll be posting many more of mine when I have a more reliable internet connection showing the volunteers and residents working together.

These people really need your help, consider making a generous donation today. Contact me here by submitting a comment to the post if you have any questions.

Most animal shelters are also in serious need of certain supplies. Most of the things they need include blankets, toys, crates, food, bowls, paper towels, laundry soap, and basically anything that you would use at home! I adopted my boy, Emmett(pictured) from the Worcester Animal Control Center and he is probably the best dog I have yet to have! Despite the fact that he was severely abused, he is so undeniably loyal and will follow me everywhere! I don't even have to put him on a leash when we go for our daily walks. I take him to my parents house almost every weekend and occasionally to class! So guys, seriously, consider adoption. I PROMISE you won't regret it!!! :)

However carefully I pick my words, I'm going to sound like a twat. So if you read this and think I am, good for you - just don't bother telling me so. I'm not interested.

Today I declined to donate 5p to Maria Carey's charity thing in Pizza Hut.

It wasn't because I don't think some starving kid needs my 5p. They are very welcome to it.

It wasn't because I think the charity in question is a bad one.

It wasn't because I am tight fisted.

It wasn't because I'm offended by so-called celebrities using charities to further their careers and make money for themselves. Although I am a little bit offended.

It's because they added it to my bill without asking me.

Fuck off Pizza Hut. I mean, five pence? You're almost guaranteeing the customer won't mention it. After all it's only 5p and it's for a worthy cause. A win-win situation: Pizza Hut raises money for charity, Maria raises money for charity, customer raises money for charity, we all feel warm inside. Anyway, I have a suggestion: Why don't you invite customers to donate a bit more than that when ordering their food, instead of being sneaky. Maybe something like a pound. How can 5p even be worthwhile administrating? Obviously it must be or they wouldn't do it, right?

Here is a link that I made a half-hearted attempt to provide for those wishing to find out more. There's even a pretty picture of a celebrity and (but not with) some well deserving kids.

Mariah Saves the World, One Chalupa at a Time - E Online.

Oh yeah, back to the story: Yes, I did ask them to remove the donation from the bill before I paid it. No, I didn't feel embarrassed. I hoped they did (they didn't).
