Disney Pixar

Wall E

Hari ni pegi tengok Wall E. Tercapai juga hasrat nak tengok cerita ni. Cuma Wall E tak seperti yang disangkakan. Apa yang saya sangka? Saya sangka, saya akan ketawa sampai pecah perut bila tonton filem ni tapi rupa-rupanya saya cuma ketawa kambing. hehe.

Filem ni berkisar tentang sebuah robot bernama Wall E iaitu pemungut sampah yang suatu harinya terjumpa satu lagi robot lain bernama Eve. Erm, nak sebut pemungut sampah pun macam bukan je. Wall E stand for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class.

Ah, malas la nak rewind otak nak ingat balik cerita tu. Dah mengantuk! So,saya letak trailer filem Wall E kat bawah :

So, saya naikkan ratingnya kepada 3.2 bintang. Bukan tak best sangat cuma tak banyak dialog. Yelaa, dah nama pn robot dah tu duduk sorang2 je kat bumi, nak cakap dgn siapa lagi?

Kiut sangat masa dia sebut " Waaaaalll Eeee" (sound like Waaaaallieeee). Dan masa Wall E sebut nama Eve, dia sebut sbg "Eeeevvvaa" instead of Eve.

Oh,ya plan untuk tengok You Don't Mess With Zohan masih on.

The Little Robot with a Big Heart.

*Possible Spoilers *

Directed by: Andrew Stanton

Starring: (the voices of) Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, John Ratzenberger, Sigourney Weaver.

What’s it about? It’s the year 2700, humans have evacuated planet Earth and poor Wall E (a robot designed to crush waste) is the only robot left; in fact he seems to be totally alone, with only a cockroach as a friend. Things change, however, with the arrival of Eve, a modern robot sent to Earth to check for signs of life. When the time comes for her to return to the space station with her findings, Wall E follows her and finds himself at the centre of many new experiences.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="181" caption="So lonely he considered trying out the Rubix Cube again..."][/caption]

Wall E is a good film for a lot of reasons but, arguably, the most appealing aspect here is the complete innocence which the little robot radiates. At the screening which I attended, the adults in the cinema responded as children might, laughing aloud and then falling silent when our principal character was injured or sad. It is a movie which, I believe, represents a return to innocence, not only as its theme, but also within the field of modern animated movies.

With Wall E, Disney Pixar have resurrected the, at times questionable, innocence of traditional Disney fare. Indeed, DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda recently demonstrated a certain break away from the cynicism and consistent references to modern culture which previous animated movies displayed, a trend which began to diminish with the lukewarm reception that Shrek 3 received. Kung Fu Panda, while sporting one or two swipes at traditional storytelling, followed the age old happy ending formula closely. So much so, in fact, that it actually lacked any surprises, thus resulting in a movie which is not very memorable.

Wall E, on the other hand, is very memorable indeed because, while it keeps the feel good vibe intact, it is a brave film too, taking chances with its set up and storyline. The first half hour or so is devoid of dialogue, focusing instead on Wall E’s daily routines and quirky personality. The CGI animation is top notch as always and here we can see how Wall E comes to life with every movement and expression. Much use is made of his puppy dog eyes, resulting in plenty oohing and awwing from the audience, particularly from the female spectators. However, what could have become a patent tugging of our heartstrings is saved by the robot’s other comic characteristics, such as his reluctance to get up for a job which only he inflicts on himself!

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="253" caption="Robot love"][/caption]

The arrival of Eve, a slick white robot with obvious Apple connotations (Steve Jobs is CEO at Apple..and CEO at Pixar..hmm) turns Wall E’s world upside down and also acts as a catalyst, moving the story forward and away from the dialogue free scenario. The second part of the film, which sees Wall E follow Eve to a ship in outer space, where the humans now reside, is a lot more fast paced and action packed than the beginning: robot chases ensue, human characters are introduced (most notably the Captain) and Wall E struggles to keep up with Eve amidst all the goings on. For a while, it feels like the movie has lost control, too caught up in chases and capers to worry any longer about character development, but in fact, these new sequences are a nice contrast to the opening scenes and it is interesting to see how Wall E deals with his new environment. The chaos is also balanced out with a wonderful dreamlike sequence that sees Wall E and Eve enjoying the weightlessness that space has to offer.

Perhaps the film is not so wholly innocent when you consider that the backdrop to the opening sequence is Earth, devoid of humans, but destroyed by the pollution and waste which we allowed take over. There is a message here about eco friendliness and better living, no doubt setting into the subconsciousness of viewers everywhere. Yet this theme or message, if you like, remains firmly in the background and does not detract from the main storyline. There is a satirical jab at this generation’s rising obesity levels and lazy attitudes, driven as they are by technology. However, this satirical representation of the human race results in a return to innocence, as mentioned earlier, when the grossly overweight humans slowly begin to break free from their monotonous state and start over. The innocence, and hence goodness, for the two seem to be equated, that surround Wall E are unearthed in the human characters too so that by the end of the movie they are at one with the little robot. It’s this innocence, I think, which Pixar hopes to resurrect in audience members and by the looks of things, I think they have succeeded. Wall E is possibly the most magical movie you will see this year!

If you haven't heard of the new Pixar movie, there seems to be quite the buzz around the "meaning" of the movie; i.e., What was Pixar's message through the film? Arguably, this is one of Pixar's most thought provoking films, risky in content and premise, and ambiguous in point; nonetheless, successful. Currently number 2 grossing $32.5M. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 97% fresh (as of July 9, 2008).

[caption id="attachment_281" align="alignright" width="135" caption="Andrew Stanton"][/caption]

NPR's Fresh Air interview with Andrew Stanton is excellent. Christianity Today's article, "The Little Robot That Could" is of interest, but maybe a bit too, well, "christian" for some in their interpretation and attempted Biblical parallels of the movie (Wall-E being Adam, and EVE being, well, Eve; the Axiom space ship being Noah's ark). Regardless, Stanton gives his personal interpretation of the film saying,

The theme that I was trying to tap into was that irrational love defeats life's programming—that it takes a random act of loving kindness to kick us out of our routines and habit.

And about the fat lazy humans?

I wasn't trying to make the humans into fat, lazy consumers, but to make humanity appear to be completely consumed by everything that can distract you—to the point where they lost connection with each other, even though they're right next to each other. The reason I made them look like big babies was because a NASA guy told me that they haven't yet simulated gravity perfectly for long-term residency in space. And if they don't get it just right, atrophy kicks in and you begin to lose your muscle tone—you just turn into a blob of goo. For a while, that's what I did with the humans in the movie; they were just big blobs of Jell-O. But it was so bizarre, we had to pull it back. So I said, well, let's just make them look like big babies. That's where all that came from.

I wasn't trying to make some sort of mean-spirited comment on consumerism or today's society. I was going with just the logic of what would happen if you were in a perpetual vacation with no real purpose in life. So I went with the idea that we'd become sort of big babies with no reason to grow up. I definitely saw humanity as victims of this system that they were in. They were just big babies that needed to stand on their own two feet.

The last thing I'm going to do is try to make a message movie!

Controversially, a MSNBC interview with Dan Abrams reports how many are suggesting that Wall-E is simply a propaganda piece for right-wing environmentalists. The video appears to not be available at MSNBC.com anymore, but HotAir.com has it posted. Similar left-wing sentiments about the evils of mankind are found in the National Review article, WALL-E, No Thanks.

While I think the question is somewhat ridiculous, I will admit that I walked away with a first impression of feeling environmentally heightened. But, while many may see that as the main message one would walk away with, my wife muses otherwise. What follows are primarily her thoughts in my summation and articulation. They are here, not just because she asked me to blog about it ;-). I believe she's on to something profound, and worth pondering and practicing.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT ENVIRONMENTALISM, IT'S ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS AND RELATING, and how that greatly affect everything around us.

The irony of the movie is that robots, the mechanical and inanimate entities (and even more ironically created/invented by humans) are actually the ones who develop intimacy, relationship, touch, feeling, compassion, empathy. And people, who are supposed to have these traits and characteristics, have been lost in technology and consumerism. The plight of humanity and of planet earth is due, not because people stopped caring about the environment, but because people stopped caring about relationships. Humanity, desiring to make life more convenient, actually made life less about living. And when Wall-E shows up, the one character that desires to be connected, at the level of, oh, shall we say, "the soul," everything begins to change and improve.

You see this all throughout the film. The movie, "Hello Dolly" is a movie about relating where Wall-E learns how to "hold hands." Wall-E first relates to the cockroach, a most undesirable creature to relate to. Yet, there is a sense of care. As Wall-E meets EVE, he "relates" to her, not as a robot, but as a fellow soul (and apparently, a very attractive one). EVE is then moved from her sense of "directive" to a sense of relationship herself with Wall-E. As Wall-E enters the Axiom (which I thought may have been a subtle allusion to the Arkansas company Acxiom, a global interactive marketing services agency [1]) even the robots there are somehow transformed by Wall-E's "waving," and "conversing," and "apologetic acts." And when Wall-E "bumps" into various people or things, you see relationships happen. The "relationship" between the Captain and Otto ("Auto?") seems to reinforce the enslavement to technology and it is only after the Captain begins to actually relate to the things and people around him that Otto tries to suppress his relational urgings. It's almost as if the technology has become a "soul/mind" of its own.

Finally, the earth is saved when the Captain realizes that they must return home, because there is life available, which will require some hard work, but it will ultimately be worth it because they have rediscovered really what living is about. Perhaps it is relating to each other? Perhaps it is refusing technological comforts and consumerism as that diminishes our humanity, and makes everything around us suffer. Perhaps. Either way, it's a lesson of higher value than mere existence, to see and relate to everything around us in, as one author has put it, an "I-Thou" relationship.

I feel that much of this is along the same lines as my post on GodBlogCon, and raises similar issues.

I close with a direct quote from my wife. And if you haven't guessed it already, there in lies also the reason I have included her so much in this post.

If we don't see how we relate, even to our garbage, affects the world around us, we miss a big part of being human, and it is through relationship, though interpersonal interaction that the world is saved again.

I know not a really exciting title, but that is what's been happening on this week around here. So, yay for new stuff!

I have added a couple new feltidermy pieces to the shop this week.

Bunny Rabbit 12 Feltidermy

and a Large Loch Ness Monster Feltidermy Here you can see it with the smaller size that I have previously made.

I also added a couple new plush...A Large Loch Ness Monster This one is 12 inches long!

And today I added A Berry Sweet Plush of a Squirrel

There is one more new one this week that will be listed tomorrow. I'm leaving him for a surprise, but he is from a brand new pattern.

Now for the good movie...Well, I'm not sure good is enough, it was great! We went to the theater last night to see Wall-E. It was just so wonderful that I can't get over it. Way to go Disney~Pixar!

Of course if you know me, you know that I'm a huge fan of animated movies. This one really stands out as the best I've seen! It was amazing how real this little animated robot is. I almost forgot he was animated a few times! They did an awesome job of giving him such a cute personality without making it sappy. It was nice to see an animated feature that didn't have tons of pop culture references and annoying, all action scenes that makes you dizzy. And Eve, or Eva as Wall-E pronounces her name, is one of the most beautiful robots ever. I highly recommend seeing this one, for kids and adults, it really is sweet and wonderful.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope to be back tomorrow with my new plush and a new Skippy adventure too! If you need a way to beat the heat this summer, go see Wall-E!

About a week ago, me and Krissy went to go see the Disney-Pixar Movie, WALL-E. I’d heard go

About a week ago, me and Krissy went to go see the Disney-Pixar Movie, WALL-E. I'd heard good things about it, repeatedly, so I wanted to check it out, despite its G rating. Normally, the thought of going to see a G rated movie, in a theater, scares the living shit out of me. A theater full of little kids is not my idea of a good time. However, since it was an early showing (11am) and on a Tuesday, I figured it wouldn't be all that crowded.

WALL-E, I must say, was impressively good. The digital animation was amazing and the story was both simple and of high quality. This is why this movie will be so successful, I think. Children, of all ages, will love this movie. It's easy to understand, the plot isn't at all dialogue driven, and the characters are all instantly likeable. Adults, of all ages, will also like the movie because the story, though simple, is interesting enough to capture and hold their attention.

Although few and far between, some of the criticism I've heard of this movie consists of, "It's a Short Circuit ripoff," or "The movie is too preachy." While WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth class) does bare a striking resemplence to Short Circuit's Johnny 5, the resemblence stops there. Everything that Short Circuit was about has nothing to do at all with what WALL-E is about. And as for the movie being "preachy", as in it trying to ram a set of morals and ethics down your throat, it's not. Anyone who is saying it is "preachy" is probably in need of a hug. Beat them up.

WALL-E is a good movie. Is it something that you, an adult who can read, will watch over and over? Probably not. However, it is a very high quality film, something that is getting harder and harder to come by. The movie does have a message, which is where the "preachy" criticism comes into play, but that message is presented in a very gentle, non-pushy way. And, yes, this movie will make you laugh at times. For all of these reasons, go see WALL-E.

What Pixar Means to Me, and My "Wall *E" Review

3 out of 5
Let me start by saying that Pixar has the best success rate of any studio I can think of.

3 out of 5
Let me start by saying that Pixar has the best success rate of any studio I can think of. They keep making quality movies and therefore keep churning out a considerable profit for each release under the Pixar name. I am a huge fan of the earlier Pixar movies like Toy Story 1 and 2, Monster's Inc., and A Bug's Life. My favorite Pixar movie is The Incredibles for two reasons: Super-heros and it's funny.

But from Cars and forward I started feeling disappointment with each release. In Cars I wanted more racing and more comedy, but it was mostly just "cute" and "touching". In Ratatouille I wanted it to be more funny, but again it was mostly "cute" and "inspiring". When I saw the trailers for Wall *E I got excited for a Pixar space flick, and again I was disappointed.

Now that I just bashed some of Pixar's most successful films, let me say this: They are not BAD movies, they just personally don't meet my interests as much as I had hoped they would. Probably because I have been getting older. They are fantastic for kids and that is what Disney and Pixar are really going for, but I can still enjoy Toy Story and Monsters and Incredibles. So why was I so bored with Wall *E?

Again, Wall *E falls into the "Cute" and "touching" categories along with a new trait: there was practically no dialogue. That actually worked really well for the movie, just not for me. Kids will love this movie and girls will love it too. But, to shoot down that "getting older" theory of mine, I loved the Pixar short before Wall *E. Which tells me I can still love Pixar, it's just a matter of when they make a movie funny enough for me (and kids of course) and touching on a level that I can relate to.

The story is a great one and that is always the Pixar strong point. They can tell a great story. Wall *E is fun to watch as he rolls around and picks things up and either disposes of them or saves them for his house. It is cool to see the robot with a personality. Then life gets disrupted when he meets Eve who came out of a giant spaceship. Eve just flies around for a bit while scanning things and shooting at Wall *E if he makes a sound. They eventually become friends after Wall *E gives her shelter from a storm, and then she discovers a plant in Wall *E's house and scans it. She basically shuts down after sucking it in to her chest and awaits the mother ship to come pick her up. Wall *E is then taken into space and onto the ship where all the Humans are waiting to be taken back to earth.

This is the part of the movie that woke me up. They show all these humans that have left earth on a ship, who are basically waiting for all the Wall *E units to clean up all their shit so they can go back to earth again. Except what has happened is over the 700 years that humans have been living on the ship, they have become entirely dependent on robots and floating chairs. They slightly evolved to being naturally obese and to having smaller bones. Their meals all come in cups. They also are so focused on talking to friends or surfing the web on their screens in front of their faces that they lose attention to the world around them. If that isn't a fucking statement about the world we live in today, or at least where most of us are headed, then...fuck it, that's what it is. (I say this as I type it on my laptop that I will surf the web on for another hour or so after writing this.)

Overall, Wall *E is a great movie that I, personally, am just not that in to. If you loved Cars and Ratatouille then you will love this just as much. But if you are a bigger fan of everything Pixar up until Cars then PLEASE tell me so I'm not so alone in this.

i finished my last dose of accutane today. well, technically i was on the generic brand isotretinoin

i finished my last dose of accutane today. well, technically i was on the generic brand isotretinoin (more commonly known as sotret?). i feel thrilled that i'm finally done with my cycle, but i'm interested to see where this is going to take me now. my symptoms have only been dry skin - especially lips and nose, but only one minor nosebleed. i did moisturize my face like nobody's business, so that's probably why that was ok. and i traded off between aquaphor and cocoa butter for my arms and legs to keep them from drying out too bad.

i'm excited to be done, but, like i said, i'm nervous. i know there's a huge success rate, but a lot of people have to do it twice, and i hope i don't. i feel like it put me in a lower mood than i used to be in, and i'm hoping that'll lift now that i'm not on it anymore. but don't get me wrong - i am so glad i did it. i used to have pretty bad acne, but now my face is as clear as the sky in july. i love it. love it love it love it.

i'd definitely recommend it to someone. i know there are 2385230 awful side effects, but they only happen to the vast minority of people, and across the board results are great. it was definitely worth being a little crabbier and having to apply chapstick about fifty times a day to have clear skin.

i'm currently reading jodi picoult's "salem falls." i just finished "the pact" and remembered that i had this one tucked away downstairs, so i pulled it out. i wish i owned "nineteen minutes." i may have to buy it, but i have about a million books on that list, so we'll just have to see. i really can't afford to buy any more books on top of my college book costs, although i seem to be mysteriously addicted to the five-dollar-movie rack at wal-mart. good movies at an awesome price. i just can't stop. seriously, who puts "catch me if you can," "something's gotta give," and "A KNIGHT'S TALE" on the $5 rack?? seriously, have some respect for mr. ledger.

speaking of heath ledger, i am so pumped for the dark knight. seriously, it's going to be awesome. i'm a little nervous because on all the trailers he looks really pretty terrifying. and i haaate scary movies, but i don't think this is going to be that scary and besides, who passes up christian bale and heath ledger and batman and a midnight movie experience? all four great things. i'll post my favorite trailer and a few screens.

scary, huh? oh heath. i am so sad that this movie killed you because you were so amazing.

sorry, i couldn't find a good screen of batman, unfortunately. but let's look at some more of these names, ok? michael caine, gary oldman, and morgan freeman, all fantastic. and maggie gyllenhaal replaced katie holmes, and it was about time that they got someone who can act their way out of a box into a movie (not katie holmes). we've already seen aaron and katie getting it on all over his apartment in "thank you for smoking," and i don't need to be blinded again. i just love maggie, especially in "stranger than fiction."

also, side note - did anyone else know that the beautiful and talented nestor carbonell is in this?? i fell in love with him on LOST and i am so excited to see him again!

one more thing i am absolutely thrilled about in this movie is the introduction of harvey dent, who becomes two-face. and who better to play him than aaron eckhart? a brilliant actor (thank you for smoking, no reservations) who deserves such an awesome part. he always seems to play the "bad guy who's really good," but here he'll just be the bad guy, so it'll be interesting to see how he does that.

speaking of other fantastic movies, disney pixar's wall-e comes out this weekend. some of their new movies have been flops compared to the greats, but i think this one will be another classic, like nemo did when it joined their ranks. cars was pretty good, but it barely scraped the surface. some of the others...just no good. anyway. wall-e looks promising. i just love disney pixar and it sounds like it's going to be great.

i suppose i'm done name-dropping for tonight, but i can't wait for either of these movies.

all i've been listening to for the past few days are those audiobooks still. i'm on "eclipse" right now, and about 2/3 of the way through, i think. i think this might be my favorite book. so good. the characters do tend to grimace, hiss, glower, sigh, and cry quite a bit, though. oh well. i suppose i can take a few sacrifices for a good book. i downloaded "anne of green gables" from librivox, where you can download a ton of audiobooks that are in the public domain, so i guess that's next on my list.

my newest musical addiction, however, is charlotte sometimes. on her myspace she lists her influences as being Fiona Apple, Roy Orbison, Van Morrison, Carol King, The Everly Brothers, Death Cab For Cutie, Lisa Loeb, Simon and Garfunkel, The Cardigans, Tracy Bonham, Snow Patrol, Billie Holiday, The Postal Service, Buddy Holly, The Violent Femmes, Rilo Kiley, Tegan and Sara, so you can make your judgments based on that. i personally love her.

and courtesy of nice facts, here are some, well...nice facts.

did you know that males sweat 40% more than females? mon dieu!

and from the quick quotes quill:

"Models are like baseball players. We make a lot of money quickly, but all of a sudden we're 30 years old, we don't have a college education, we're qualified for nothing, and we're used to a very nice lifestyle. The best thing is to marry a movie star." - cindy crawford

Barbie, The Island Princess.

We love these movies, we watch them over and over...
