[caption id="attachment_2305" align="aligncenter" width="255" caption="Parkour Workshop"][/caption]

Athlete

n.

A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been hovering around him since the opening ceremony, and now after he has shattered six world records and won seven of his seven entered races, there is no question to many sports fans and journalists alike that Michael Phelps is the greatest athlete ever to set foot on Earth. He has the three key components of a true athlete: strength, agility, and endurance, and he happens to compete in a sport that demands each of those traits. But is he really the best? I beg to differ.

There is no disputing that Phelps is the greatest swimmer ever, but some people need to seriously contemplate making a statement like this, which in my opinion is very premature. The world has only seen this guy for less than a week, and whatever he has managed to accomplish is admittedly extremely impressive, but the world has simply seen better out of a human being. It seems like in all this excitement the world has forgotten the flawless performances that have been displayed thus far in the world of sports ranging from Kobe Bryant's 81 point performance, where relentless scoring met grace and agility, to Michael Jordan's illustrious career. And who can forget Walter Payton's mesmerizing speed and toughness in the dirty sport of American football and Usain Bolt's recent world records with arguably the best sprinting ever showcased. And what about Pele, Gordie Howe, Magic Johnson, and the many others who really were sports during their era.

And we keep forgetting the unknown sports that really showcase the most challenging and athletic ability -- Big Mountain Skiing, Biatholan, the marathon, horse racing, gymnastics, and (my favorite) -- parkour.

So is Michael Phelps the greatest athlete ever? It's very hard to tell, and it all comes down to a long and hard thought by a well respected journalist. So who is the greatest athlete ever? David Belle. Look him up.

We are talking about parkour – an activity that’s become a way of life for many people. The concept is encapsulated in the name, which derives from the French word for “obstacle course”, parcours. Until the middle of the last century it was simply an element of French military and firefighter training, but now parkour is a worldwide movement.

It is a practical, satisfyingly valid response to the existential dilemmas of our age and our urban environment. Humans have always strived to expand the limits of the possible. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries this urge was epitomized by technological progress and ever growing cities that represented opportunity. Automated manufacturing, sophisticated infrastructures and access to cornucopia of goods and services made urbanization seem like the solution to human happiness.

Yet walk down the street of any metropolis and you’ll realize that it’s just the opposite. Cities are colossal machines that reduce their inhabitants to insignificant cogs; to survive, one must run an endless obstacle course. This challenge – or affront – to human nature tends to produce two responses: submission to the daily grind alleviated by voyeuristic immersion in the lives of celebrities, or flight from the cities to an imagined utopia of leafy suburbs or bucolic villages.

David Belle was born in 1973, into a French family of limited means. As a child, his maternal grandfather Gilbert Kitten, a retired sergeant of the sapeurs-pompiers (firefighters), told him stories about real-life heroes. His father Raymond had served as a soldier in Indochina and then as a firefighter in Paris, where his colleagues dubbed him “a force of nature”. No wonder David felt compelled to emulate their physical courage and prowess…

Running, jumping, climbing all kinds of heights, balance, the ability to overcome obstacles…David was obsessed with those things.
All these stunts are the results of hard training. Parkour involves an enormous effort; beside exceptional fitness, endurance of pain and capacity to avoid trauma, it requires utter concentration and self-control. A traceur’s body is their tool for realizing dreams and desires. Their training involves mind exercises, many taken from Oriental martial arts and meditative practices. Safety and responsibility are taken seriously; movements should never be performed without prior training, involving many repetitions of basic exercises and careful thought about the order of movements.

Although minor injuries are inevitable in parkour, series injuries are uncommon and usually happen only when the traceur is careless or foolish. Yet this is enough to make others wonder if parkour is a danger for children or society as a whole.

Traceurs would argue that this reflects society’s neuroses and conformity to the spatial constraints of cities. People are so conditioned to follow existing paths and routes that anyone who acts in defiance of them is seen as posing a threat or, at best, as an irrelevance.

Parkour is not about sport, or politics, but a way of creating your own routes through an over-determined environment. It means perceiving the world, understanding your body and coexisting with the city. It is an expression of will and freedom to act; an emotional outburst, profoundly romantic.

Gary Whelan takes us into the world of parkour in Belfast. He explains the philosophy and moves involved in the discipline, and how the scene has blossomed among young men in Belfast over the past few years. Gary also talks about how the traceurs (as practitioners of parkour are called) deal with the suspicions of hooliganism, the worries of family members, and disapproval from authority figures. And for any aspiring traceurs, Gary advises how to get involved, what training to do, what shoes to wear, and how to stay safe while scaling buildings and jumping off walls.

No Le Parkour:

Ajudou a criar o PAWA

Vocês nunca ouviram falar do Parkour?

Awesome! Sounds like word about Parkour is making its way into the mainstream...

In the most recent James Bond film, Casino Royale, viewers are treated to an amazing demonstration of agility and physical prowess -- and no, ladies, I'm not referring to actor Daniel Craig's formidable physique. Rather, early in the film an extended, nail-biting action sequence takes place, showcasing the acrobatic and almost gravity-defying abilities possessed by practitioners of the physical art form known as Parkour.

Founded by David Belle in France, Parkour (which means "the art of displacement" in English) is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, principally using the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help a person overcome obstacles found in their surrounding environment -- from tree branches and large rocks to metal railings and concrete walls.
