Maybe it's really crotchety (and ironic) of me to say, but I hate LoveFest. It severely impaired my ability to accomplish anything today. How many times a year does San Francisco have to completely shut down in order for people to walk down Market Street in costumes? This already happens during Halloween, Bay to Breakers and Gay Pride--all of which are way more inclusive and, in my opinion, worthy events than simply promoting one genre of music. I don't want to have to listen to the overlapping, thundering beat of four simultaneous DJs just to get to City Hall, and I definitely don't want to pay $5 for the privilege. What municipal leader decided it was a good idea to cordon off our city's civic center and turn it into a rave with a door charge?

I'm okay with throwing a parade to celebrate a cultural holiday or a civil rights achievement, but to throw a parade just for people who like flourescent wigs and techno? That's really pushing it. When you get right down to it, LoveFest is just a big advertisement for a small subset of DJs, clubs and related businesses. I don't think it's right to spend public money on police and cleaning crews for something so commercial, and I don't think it's right to interfere with everyone else's normal activity just so one group of music fans can throw a party.

Hip Hop Dancing is passion.

Hi dance lovers! How are you doing’ I’m one of us, Dance is my passion, Dear friends

Let me tell you something before I start, ‘m not a writer, but whatever knowledge I gathered in my research about this unique and exceptional form of dance, I have it for you. Let’s go through the brief…

Hip-Hop is a very intense dance that builds balance, strong muscles, and great figure. There is no age limitation or restriction for learners and dancers. It is also not necessary that the instructor should be a professional dancer. Relax guys! You can even learn it online.

Let’s know the History of this popular Dance form:

Hip Hop dancing is an urban ethnic dance form that has gained popularity in recent days. It is more common than the break dance of modern days. It is a cultural movement which marked its beginning as part of the hip hop culture in the early 1900's, when the youth in and around Bronx, New York started dancing on the streets (primarily among African Americans and Latinos).

When hip hop music began to emerge, it was based around DJs who created rhythmic beats by looping breaks (small’s portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables. This was later accompanied by "rapping" (a rhythmic style of chanting). An original form of dancing, and particular styles of dress, arose among followers of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture.

Hip hop dance Form:

Hip hop dancing is an ideal way to express one's creativeness. It features self impressions and the dances come from the soul. The dancing represents body movements that go with the beat and rhythm of hip hop music. There is breaking, popping, locking, and free styling in hip hop dances. The jumps, breakages, and rotations in the movements are combined in such a way that the dance style becomes an informal and explosive one. The dancers should become familiar with the dancing technique.

Hip Hop helps us keep Fit:

Hip Hop dancing is considered a good exercise for those persons who perform these dances. It helps the dancers to improve flexibility, to develop body balance, and to coordinate the muscles. This dance allows the dancers to improve their own style and to remain in good body shape. It also leads the dancers to a state of spiritual wholeness. In order to achieve the maximum results for you, I suggest you always warm up before you start, just like all professional hip hop dancers do.

Exit Enterprises is a Baltimore based music collective that got their start by throwing underground

Exit Enterprises is a Baltimore based music collective that got their start by throwing underground parties. The spot's entrance was a doorway in an alley with a glowing Exit sign above the door. These parties were advertised through word of mouth.

"Just look for the glowing Exit Sign behind St. Paul street."

The parties grew and eventually were moved to Sonar, one of the biggest clubs in Baltimore. No longer throwing parties, the collective has been busy building their discography and starting their own label. Below is a sample of my favorite song on their new release "Holdin On":

Sample

You can purchase songs from their new release at Stompy.com.

Exit's Statement on the EP:

We're proud to announce the first release on our label, featuring the legendary DJ/producer, Anyo of Melbourne. Also featured on this first release is Baltimore's very own, Exit, have music been featured on DJ mixes around the globe, such are Roger Sanchez' show - Release Yourself as well as John Digweed's Transitions radio show. Exit's music can be heard on mixes from DJs like James Curd, Mark Farina, Diz, Inland Knights, Littlemen and even Derrick Carter.

This is a Flyer cover I designed with EXIT (Devin & Josh). As you can see these guys have a sense of humor:

OK, so that's an attention-grabbing headline. The truth is, I did make my screen acting debut, but it's about 2 seconds or so in length. ;-)

The new music video for recording artist Rikah's track, Everything is Changing, was released just yesterday. (You can view it on YouTube.) Assembled by some of the great folks at Import Sound and Vision in California, the video is set to the great Verano Remix of the song, and blends footage taken last October (2007) in Las Vegas, with some video shot here in Denver at Tracks Nightclub late last year. The Tracks footage includes some energetic dancing crowd shots, with my buddy DJ Brian Howe doing his thing. I had opened for Brian the night the video was taken, and was hanging out with him in the booth during the shoot. You'll see my brief cameo toward the end of the video. Don't blink or you'll miss it. :-) Here's a screen shot in case you do:

[caption id="attachment_86" align="aligncenter" width="425" caption="DJ Brian Howe and DJ Wesley at Tracks, in the Rikah video"][/caption]

I was surprised to learn that I was in the finished product, and I'm thrilled that it was associated with the amazing Rikah, who is one of the most amazing, most talented people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting—a rare gem of a person on every level. (Love ya, baby!)

Enjoy the video at the YouTube link (above), along with all the rest of the videos from recent CAPP Records releases.

A dupla dance andava elogiando a banda e tal.

With a little over two weeks left for DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs of 2008, there is still time to cast your vote for you favorite DJs. Last year, Armin van Buuren was crowned the number one DJ in the world, moving from a second place in 2006. (Top 100 DJs of 2007)

The poll is 100% open to the public, and to vote, all you need is a valid email address and your top 5 choices for the year. However, this digital voting system cause major controversy when several DJ were accused and disqualified for cheating. According to DJ Mag officials, scripts were written to move sertain DJ to top positions. Among the major DJ who were disqualified were U.S. top talents Christopher Lawrence and DJ Dan.

The results will be announced on Wednesday, October 29th. Be sure to catch the live cast of the ceremony, that is if you will be one of the lucky ones. Last year, the server was overloaded to the point where you were not able to check the result, and I'm not even talking about streaming video.

One bit of weirdness when it comes to the dance music industry is that artist and track names seem t

One bit of weirdness when it comes to the dance music industry is that artist and track names seem to have less relevance than they did at one point, or even today with other genres. My theory is that it's due to the relative unimportance of the long-form album in dance (few produce them these days, though there are notable exceptions with artists like Moby, ATB, DJ Encore, etc.), and beyond that, that singles tend not only to be the focus, but that they are islands—projects with a start, and a defined end, at which point they're released, promoted (or not), and the producers and/or vocalists move-on to the next project. Finally, it think it has something to do with the fact that in dance, the original producer, the vocalist (if applicable), and the remixers on a specific project are all islands too... Often times, they come together, they do something, they move-on to other collaborations.

Whatever the cause, it has the rather strange side-effect that talented producers end-up working under numerous aliases, project names, group names and so on much of the time. If you are a fan of a specific individual, it becomes a bit of a challenge to figure out what they're actually working on at any given moment. (That dance artists in general don't seem to understand even the most basic aspects of marketing or building brand contributes greatly to this too.)

One of the more talented production teams in my view is UK-based Soul Seekerz, consisting of Simon Langford, Julian Napolitano and Andrew Galea. Napolitano in particular goes under numerous monikers, including One Hit Wonder (with Soul Seekerz partner Simon Langford), Ruff Loaderz (with Sheryl Deane), and Perpetual Motion (with Andy Manston). Langford also has a number of names, including Avalon Superstar (with Billy Mead), and Koishii & Hush (with Alex Sowyrda). I'm sure I could go on... You get the point.

Along with each single being an island, it's not unusual in dance for an artist to work with several different record labels. Many so-called "record deals" in dance are informal, and usually it's a singles-focused deal. Gone are the days that many people still think exist, where associating one's self with a record label is some sort of sweet high-dollar deal with big advances, slick parties, limos and all that. Not anymore. Not in dance anyway, and probably not in today's broader music industry. And seemingly way more often than not, artists create their own "record labels" to release their tracks, bypassing established labels in an effort to keep as much of the limited take that exists these days as possible.

Which brings me to the real subject of this post: Groove Factory Records.

Scant information is actually available, but as near as I'm able to piece together, this Boston and UK-based record label was started by Simon Langford and Billy Mead for their joint project, Avalon Superstar (which features the vocals of the talented Rita Campbell).

These days, they've been taking-on some additional projects that for all I know are just other names for Langford and Mead. This summer, in particular, Groove Factory released a pair of incredibly strong dance tracks.

Loveless feat. Amanda Wilson with Found a Miracle is the one of the pair of songs that's gained some traction in radio and club play. Wilson's vocals are, as usual, very strong (she's a staple of dance, having worked extensively with Freemasons), matched with good songwriting and some sweet production work from the remixers on the project.

The other track I've grown attached to is Lisa Law's Wicked Ways, which was distributed to promotion several weeks ago, but which I haven't heard being played or seen being charted anywhere outside of my own sets and my own chart. Law is a UK singer-songwriter, and the sole club-length mix is from Soul Seekerz (Langford/Napolitano/Galea again), and is perhaps one of the catchiest pieces of production work I've heard in the past few months. The rhythm track is driving and razor-sharp, typical of Soul Seekerz, and the samples and instrumentation used in the arrangement are very well thought out, and well chosen. As a complete track, it represents some of the very best of today's house music in my view, and it baffles me why this track hasn't been more widely picked-up. Much to the chagrin of some of my audience, it's also not available for sale yet through any of the usual suspects; so many people are clamoring to get this song, it's a shame that Groove Factory are keeping it under wraps for whatever reason.

In any case, it's clear that Langford and Mead are a very talented, very capable duo. I have no idea what their plans are for Groove Factory, but if they keep cranking out work like their own Avalon Superstar project, Loveless, and the Lisa Law release, I can guarantee they'll continue to find a strong audience.

Now, I realize I'm going to hear from some of you guys concerning the amount of estrogen that's present in this playlist. To you, I say (a) get over it -- I don't really care about your thoughts on this topic, and (b) the next workout playlist will have an inordinate amount of testosterone in so your day is coming.
