Batman: Gotham Knight

DC Animated Universe.

1. Have I Got A Story For You (Studio 4°C)
2. Crossfire (Production I.G.)
3. Field Test (Bee Train)
4. In Darkness Dwells (Madhouse)
5. Working Through Pain (Studio 4°C)
6. Deadshot (Madhouse)

[vodpod id=Groupvideo.1388588&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

Suriyasai Katasila: “The PAD’s challenging idea, suggesting a mixed model to bring lawmakers into parliament is the 70:30 formula in which 70% of office holders come from processes of selection, and 30% of MPs would come from elections. This proposed system is only starting point to encourage wider debate and exchange of ideas in society.

The details or new politics model requires knowledgeable people, academics, educational institutions, universities and different sectors to ponder this subject to transcend the cult of election where capitalists dominate electoral politics at all levels and country can be bought, while people have only a legal right to vote submissively

As mentioned above, many people will doubt where we begin: A coup d'etat, tear up the constitution, install a government of national unity or transitional government? But I think that the means are not as important as the principles. If at this moment society sees the importance and urgency of building the nation and new politics, the method is not that difficult an issue and might be easier than we think. It need not lead to killing and civil war as some people fear”

Sirote Klampaiboon: “In terms of political science, this idea has come from military and elite class for 30 years.

The PAD has not been clear about this, as they are well aware that the clearer the explanation of their ‘new politics’ is, the less political credentials they have.

I can say that the idea of 70: 30 new politics is backward and reactionary. It seems progressive but, in reality, it is a conservative idea that tries to subvert electoral politics.

Democratic society is based on the principle that the electoral power comes from people. The PAD is entitled to attack the elections but their latest thinking is not the way to empower the people more, but instead propose to formally enhance the power of certain groups of people who have appointment power, hence returning to the ‘elitist politics’.

Mass politics does not equal democratic struggle. No matter how big the mass is on the streets, without the principle of all being equal, regardless of race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, one man one vote, that is not a democratic movement.”

Ive been hearing a lot about the new X58 chipset coming out. But the big question is crossfire or sli? Both says the blog http://razetheworld.com/blog/?p=102. This would be the smartest move by intel considering the race for gpu's is extremely close. ATI is making a comeback with their new 4870 cards with a starting price of $300. I believe this is making the people over at nVidia a little uneasy about how loyal their customers are. They seem to have scraped by with their 280 cards and the outrageous starting price of them just because of the sheer loyalty of the nVidia customers with huge budgets. If the X58 were to have this feature it would add an amazing amount of freedom with, in my opinion, hardest component to buy in a pc.

There will be a downside to this fantastic technology... the bill. It is obvious that the crossfire X58 boards will be available first. If you were to pick up one of these you also need to pick up a new processor and some new DDR3 memory. This begins to add up against you. Not to mention that when they do add sli it will probably cost around $100 more to add the new chipset. Only those who have nearly unlimited budgets will be able to pay the bill.

If intel were to make the X58 stable, well priced along with the sli/crossfire configuration it should be one of the top enthusiast choices.

Before I begin reviewing Batman: Gotham Knight, I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed the 1 hr 1

Before I begin reviewing Batman: Gotham Knight, I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed the 1 hr 15 mins of 6 short films that is set in between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Although DC Comics hired their american script writers to write the script and have major Japanese Studios Production I.G, Madhouse and some small timers, Studio 4°C and Bee Train to direct/animate the films, the latter was not given much due credit for their contribution in fleshing out the dark knight. I cannot begin to guess why DC comics had done such a thing.

With the recent surge in interest of anime from the west, western companies have perhaps come to realise that it will be a 'profitable' move to assilimate anime style into their own milking machine of action heroes. Heck, even britney spears manager is on to it! See what I mean by watching the video below.

Disclaimer: If you hate/detest/loath britney's voice, please kindly turn off the sound before suffering serious percussions. I am not liable for any hearing problems incurred from listening to the below video.

Assilimate it? Yes. Credit the east? Nope, too much pride PLUS, they can tell their hardcore batman (bald middle aged)fanboys (who prolly didn't ever watch a single episode of anime) that THEY came up with the design first! BOO!

However, it's really great to see that after the Matrix where the Wachowski Brothers credited Ghost in the shell as their source of inspiration, anime continues to have a stepping stone into the west (Naruto or bleach doesn't count. Seriously.)

The next six posts will be individual reviews for each short film. Enjoy the screenshots.

Summary

Summary
Batman: Gotham Knight is a 2008 animated direct-to-DVD anthology film of six animated short films set in-between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The shorts, or segments, are written by Josh Olson, David Goyer, Brian Azzarello, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg and Alan Burnett. Each segment has its own writing and artistic style, just as the works from the DC Universe. The six films all star Kevin Conroy, reprising his role as Batman from the DC Animated Universe.

The Good
- Each story in this movie has an unique style of animation and writing
- The last story Deadshot really brings you back to the old Batman TAS
-The different design of the Scarecrow was much better in this than in Batman Begins
- Kevin Conroy returning as the voice was sweet

The Bad
-The stories are way to short lasting each one just over ten minutes.
-Killer Croc who was rumored to appear is only in it for 30 sec. after Batman hits him he runs away and you never see him again
- The first story is stupid didn't have to be there and is a total rip off of an episode of Batman TAS

Score I give this a 8 bat signals/10
I feel fans of old and fans of new will appreciate this movie

The tests included several benchmarks-Aquamark 3D, Super PI 1MB test, 3DMark 2001, and 3DMark 2006. Opponents were allowed to use any cooling equipment possible to come up with a high but stable overclock. In the event, Gigabyte provided equipment for the contestants to overclock. Each contestant was given the X38T-DQ6 motherbord featured by Gigabyte, which was based on the Intel X38 Chipset. Each contestant received Corsair Dominator 2GB PC20000 Kits @ 1.9 Volts and the Corsair cooling fan for the modules. In addition, the 9600GT Video Cards were provided for the competition. Each contestant was given a 250GB SATA2 Western Digital pre-loaded with drivers/benchmarking software.

[wp_caption id="attachment_19" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="30-Minute Time Frame to Setup"][/wp_caption]

Contestants were each given a 30 minute time frame to complete there tasks for setting up systems. Some had additional chemicals such as Silicon Spray to prevent condensation or vaseline and/or nail polish clear coat around the cpu socket.
Various tasks had to be done such as installing the LN2 Pots(CPU Kits) to there motherboard which include insulation to prevent condensation from occuring to the motherboards capacitors which can cause the motherboard to fry.

The contestants were given a time frame to complete the benchmark. For Super Pi, each contestant had 30 minutes to sucessfully overclock to the highest clock setting on their processor and make sure Super Pi is running properly. Super Pi's tests were conducted using the 1MB option. In addition, the other tests that were conducted were Aquamark 3D, and 3DMARK 2001 as well as 3DMARK 2006. These tests were given a more hefty 30-45 minute time frame because the tests are more CPU and GPU intensive.

Results in this contest varied, some like Habib did not have sufficient cooling used phase change cooling instead of LN2 and was not able to clock so high. Habib managed to overclock his to 5Ghz stable to Windows, Super Pi, and Aquamark as well 3DMark 2001. However, in 3DMark 2006 he had to downclock his CPU to 4.8Ghz so that he can succesfully run 3DMARK 06. Others like Fugger(XtremeSystems.com owner; 3rd place champ) and Ross(OCForums.com team) as well Mark who is from OCForums team as well as able to overclock raning from 5.4-5.7Ghz stable in all.

[wp_caption id="attachment_23" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Overclocking on air."][/wp_caption]

Strategies: Denny from G.Skill, took a more conservative strategy to overclocking by first plugging in the stock cpu fan and overclocking as high as possible using the fan. He then saved the overclocked profile into the board's bios so that in case of an error he can go back to a stable point. Denny, recalling from the event, was able to clock to 4Ghz on air with windows booting up stable. Others just overclocked it on the fly with there LN2 setup.

As contestants' time passed, most were anxious for their tests to complete there deadline for submission of there scores. Below is the score table thanks to overclockersclub.com as well Gigabyte staff for providing the table.

[wp_caption id="attachment_24" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Bechmark Scores for each test."][/wp_caption]

The Phase Change Cooler in action. This was Habib's phase change cooler, which was able to hit temps as low as -45 degress celsius at stock cpu speeds and between 5 to 7 degrees celsius at a 5Ghz Clock full load. At 4.8Ghz, temps were roughly between -10 to -15 degress celsius. The phase change was a stage 1 cooler.

The ending was quite an astonishing one. Everybody was tired and some were urking to come back to the next OC competition next year to showcase their new strategies and hidden tactics to beat their fellow competitors. Much thanks to Gigabyte and staff-Rita Kuo, Angela Lan, and hicookie for making this event possible. Thanks to Fugger and many others like Todd and Ross for their advice on overclocking.

GameK

Bravo All Stars!

It's really a great moment, and in many ways its own blueprint for change. Jon Stewart took the time to pull into focus a big problem with American News Media. Stewart took the time to remind us that News is not supposed to be political. That it is in fact supposed to report the news... not make it. There are notable exceptions of course, Murrow's fight against McCarthyism, Russert's sinking of David Duke; however in each case it was a newsman taking the time to report the facts in the face of falsehoods. They were not there to debate truth, or debate lies, merely there to make sure that truth was heard above the lies in a manner that is not political but merely factual. If these moments make the news then it is because the nature of American news is backsliding so far into failure that honesty stands out by virtue of its rarity.

Honesty is a virtue no longer available in our media.

It's sad that a comedian had to go onto a show as divisive as Crossfire to bring the truth to light. The effect that he had was incredible. After this episode CNN refused to resign Tucker Carlson's contract and the show Crossfire faded away. CNN stated that it was going to adjust the tone of its shows so as to be more fair with the news and stop promoting party positions; it was a shining moment in the media's big brown bowl of rancid factual reporting. Stewart was almost a populist in his efforts. Almost.

The other stations appear to have learned little from CNN's mistake. While no station has one show that promotes partisan debates as bad as Crossfire, a popular nugget lately has been the growing battle between Fox News and MSNBC. Fox, which enjoys a near 90% Republican viewership has long been a station representative of the ideas of the right and has also been the most watched news channel on television in recent years. MSNBC, a start-up news organization not even all that old has taken up the news cause of the left and it, too, is rising in the ratings. It's a battle somewhat remniscent (if not a carbon copy) of yellow journalism and the ongoing war between the two biggest newspaper organizations at the beginning of the century: William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World.

Yellow journalism was exemplified by the race of both papers to the bottom; to scandalize and spread fearmongering through the news in an attempt to grab the biggest circulation. It was a war of egos as much as economics and the resultant news coverage became horrifically flawed and sensationalized.

MSNBC and FOX are guilty of the sins of both Hearst and Pulitzer; in their war for ratings they also have reported the news sure to create the highest ratings and not the news most likely to represent fact. MSNBC and Fox have added sins in their commitment to particular ideologies and parties, and they're willing to promote those parties and ideas through a much more exciting medium than Hearst or Pulitzer had been allowed; television. On top of that the two famous yellow journalists rarely remained committed to one ideology or party for long, but at least managed to declare open season on anyone in the public's eye who may make a mistake.

Like yellow journalism both Fox and MSNBC have their own individual egos: Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann. Not content (and probably not able to civilly) duke it out on one show, like Crossfire, the two pundits use the framework of their networks to launch partisan attacks. Not content to just bash each other on partisan issues, but go after each other personally.

Watch:

In 5 minutes of expensive television news time, will one ever be allowed to hear the actual news?

Since Crossfire was sunk, the situation has gotten worse. The people using this precious airtime are the 1st and 3rd most popular American news sources and they spent their time dithering about sexual fantasies and screaming about bias to the point of ridiculousness. The same criticisms Stewart used on Crossfire about political theater and newsmen making themselves news, are equally as applicable. The blustering doesn't even seem to serve a party or ideology anymore but solely the network ratings.

What there needs to be is another third party commentator who steps in to drag us, kicking and screaming if need be, back to reality.

Why I Will Always Sort of Be Fond of Mike Huckabee (and other ramblings)

1.) First of all, he’s adorable and folksy. Look, I know it’s a front, as much as McCain

1.) First of all, he's adorable and folksy. Look, I know it's a front, as much as McCain's "my friends" crap and Obama's handsome, intelligent perfect wonderfulness are also--let's admit it, liberals--manufactured. There will be an Obama sex scandal, because he's better-looking than JFK AND Clinton and powerful men always have sex scandals. It's just part of being a powerful dude, unless you're Jimmy Carter. Michelle is super gorgeous, but so was Jackie O., and empirical evidence suggests that men don't give a fig how hot their wife is if they're yearning to bang another chick.

2.) Anyway, back to Huckabee. That last name is fabulous, even ignoring the movie that everybody piled on top of and jerked off on while also spouting from the mouth about how "groundbreaking" and "challenging" and "quirky" and "brilliant" it was. (Confession: I haven't seen it, precisely because I grew nauseated by hearing over and over how amaaaaazing it was. Also, I saw a clip in which Jason
Schwartzman has sex with someone, which is always problematic for me to consider. And I feel like the director is a misogynist prick, and it shows in his films and in his interviews, so fuck that guy. Or don't.)

3.) He owns his right-wingery. I love people who own whatever their particular brand of bullshit is. Mike Huckabee has never pretended to be anything other than a formerly fat, right-wing Christian who thinks geighz are sinners and abortion is murder. He owns that shit! And thank God he's allowed to say what he says and I'm allowed to say what I say and you're allowed to say what you say and that's the beauty of the First Amendment. I don't agree with most things he says (except the geighz being sinners because, c'mon, THEY SO ARE) but I will absolutely defend his right to say them.

4.) I was in the TRL studio for the MTV News MySpace presidential forum prior to Super Tuesday, where Clinton, Obama, Huckabee, and Ron Paul beamed themselves in via satellite to talk to the kids (P.S. Everyone in the room lost their shit when it was Obama's turn, and he wasn't even in the fucking ROOM. But he was talking to us and we could not handle it.) And Huckabee was just winsome and delightful and I had a slight crush on him for about 48 hours. I would eat BBQ with him and play badminton with his 18 identical hulking sons

5.) Also? He's FUNNY! Like, for reals. This motherfucker is funny. He pokes fun at himself and he's probably a delightful toast-giver at the weddings of his 18 identical hulking sons. Are any of those gents married yet? I might just need to catch me one of them!

6.) This blog post about how Republicans who spread racist lies about Obama totally suck. He's completely upfront about not agreeing with Obama about hardly a damned thing, and he gives special time to the abortion ish, because that's Huckabee's thing. But he doesn't say the guy is evil or a demon. In fact, he employs very sensible rhetoric, writing, "What I am saying is that we need to challenge Obama on the basis that his ideas are the wrong ones—not attacking him personally. If people spend their time repeating a bunch of internet driven drivel about his middle name (he didn’t choose his anymore than I chose mine), or his race (I do sincerely celebrate that our country has moved to a place where a person’s race doesn’t limit him from aspiring to the highest office in our land, but I just believe that due to his proposals and lack of substantive experience, he’s gone far enough—not because of his race, but because of his sincere, but misguided proposals), or his church (there are far more important reasons for us to elect Senator McCain than where Obama went to church). ... I think he is a sincere and obviously a very intelligent and charismatic person. For us to deny that is foolish."

Huckabee = class act, at least in terms of the speech he's employing on the Obama ish.

I will conclude by admitting something I admitted on stage last night for the first time: "I kind of love Republicans. And not in an ironic, 'Ooh, I'm mocking them because they're different from me, they're so stuuuuuupid, how could they have those CRAZY views?' kind of way." Like I actually often enjoy them, as people. Because they are people. And most of this country is conservative (relative to NYC and Asheville, NC, which I suppose isn't hard) and there are a lot of Republicans to chat with.

My best friend from childhood is a Republican Midwestern housewife. At times, her dad has been like a wacky Republican uncle to me [although this year he turned into an Obamacan! Holy shit! I freaked out when he told me]. My dad is a Republican, and we've agreed about very little with regard to politics (note: unlike Huckabee, he's a social moderate and fiscal conservative). But he's still a solid good dude. One of my fellow Street Teamers is a Republican, and he's a delightful and endearing gent with whom I will be hanging out relatively soon when he emerges from the "don't take my guns or my land!" New England state in which he dwells.

Also, Condi has excellent taste in clothes. She is my favorite closeted lesbian, and I salute her piano-playing skills and muff-diving secret life of shame.

And look, Coulter's a hilarious loon with a fondness for nasty rhetoric because it fulfills her need for attention and makes her money. She's also a fag hag, which is the most confusing part of all. My boyfriend hates her so deeply that he can't even discuss her without getting visibly enraged. Okay, that's fine. I'm not gonna go toe-to-toe with anyone on a woman with whom I never agree but who I find entertaining (dude, she was a FUCKING DEADHEAD! Amazing! And she likes Kanye. I think they have similar ego situations happening.)

I relish political debate, whether it's playful or actually heated. I prefer the playful kind, nurtured as I was in a home where my father and grandfather often squared off at the dinner table. I'm one of the rare breed with a grandfather more liberal and open-minded than my father, his son. Some of my warmest memories are of laying on the floor in the family room, listening to my father and grandfather watch Crossfire and fight.

Do I get pissed at anti-geighz? Yes, but I'm talking about the Reverend Fred Phelps type douchebags, not people who think it's weird and kind of gross when two men have sex and live together. The first group is hateful; the latter group is ignorant and comprised mainly of people who haven't met very many gay folks (and possibly haven't met any, ever!) That latter group also counts among its members many very kind, loving people. And while they may parrot what they've heard in church, but newsflash: going to church regularly, particularly as a child and adolescent, is akin to sticking your head in a propaganda machine and flipping the switch to "ON." Trust me, I've been through the wringer with that one.

Are people going to give up religion, which is often the biggest social and even economic force in town? No. Might they be persuaded to soften their views, even to come around to fully accepting people they formerly regarded as sinners? Yes, of course.

The exception to the above is the abortion issue. If you firmly believe that life begins the moment a man throws it in some lady and spurts, you are not going to be dissuaded from that viewpoint. I'm proud to work for a pro-choice organization, but wise enough to recognize that my duty is to educate the public and protect a woman's right to birth control access and abortion--NOT to convince people to change their fundamental (ha!) belief systems.

And I've been there with the anti-abortion/anti-choice people. Literally. I used to be one myself, back before I got a taste of reality in the form of my friends growing up and facing tough choices on pregnancy; long before I taught high school and saw the price children pay for mistakes; and certainly long before I worked with poor rural immigrant women at an outreach clinic and saw the strain that yet another child put on their ability to ably mother the children they already had. I look at my transition from so-called "pro-life" to pro-choice as an exercise in maturation, in growing up, and, ultimately, in growing smarter, stronger, and more compassionate.

And that, dear readers (or un-dear lurkers) is the extent of my sick words. No, I mean literally sick: I'm at home sick and bored as all get-out, but also achey, exhausted, and throat sore-ified.

Have a great weekend.

Xin chúc mừng All Stars!

Denis O'Conner, (l) The glass blower No. 1 ud and (r) Eroded form No.1 1982

The Gang spent glasscentralcanberra's first birthday over at the Wagga Wagga Gallery checking out the National Art Glass Collection courtesy of Cath Bowdler and Michael Scarrone. [Yes, imagine, one year old - our very first post went out on 27th May 2007. It was really just serendipity that found us in Wagga precisely on the anniversary, but it was a rather nice coincidence nonetheless...though we didn't actually put two and two together until later, when we were already back at the hide-out. n(Ed)]

Megsie went over specifically to get the feel of the Charles Butcher and Brian Corr two-man-show, Intrinsic Elements (cos she's been asked to write a piece about it), and happened upon the added bonus of Crossfire, a fabulous show that counterposes Wagga Wagga Gallery's own home-grown and very significant collections; The Margaret Carnegie Print Collection and the National Art Glass Collection. Both were begun in 1980, the former with a donation of original prints dating back to 1940 (it now holds some 1200 works) and the latter as a nascent project subsequently launched at the First Wagga Wagga National Contemporary Australian Glass Exhibition in January 1981 (it now has in excess of 500 works.)

Cath Bowdler (the newly appointed director/manager of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery) and Michael Scarrone (the National Glass Collection's curator), through the selective pairing of works from each of the collections, have hit upon a mutually beneficial way of showcasing both. It makes for an intelligent and animated gallery experience, full of stimulating visual dialogue - with each and every work informed by a fresh and enlightening perspective.

Some matchings are the work of the same artist; Denis O'Connor (opening snap above) and Brian Hirst (below)...

We haven't taken snaps of it all (it's a really extensive show) and we were stymied by the highly reflective environment (as you can see, Megsie's only an amateur photographer at best) so we must apologise for the numerous missing links (the marriage of Liz Kelly and Dorrit Black was just one of many favourites that didn't make it through the editing process...) So we can only provide an abbreviated overview, and encourage you to make the pilgrimage yourselves. The accompanying catalogue is worth the drive alone.

AMD 780 Series & RADEON 3000 Series

Year: 1947

Director: Edward Dmytryck

Cast: Robert Young, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, Gloria Grahame

Crossfire starts with a fight seen only in shadows on the wall. A man is killed but you don’t know who, and you don’t know who the murderer is. Crossfire is filmed as a fairly standard murder mystery, someone is murdered and the wrong person is blamed. As the investigation continues the real killer is eventually identified and caught. Seems pretty standard, right? As the story unfolds you will see that the real story here is one of bigotry and religious intolerance. A topic that was never attempted before (Gentleman’s Agreement was released later the same year).

Captain Finlay, (Robert Young) is investigating the murder of Joseph Samuels (Sam Levene) a Jew who met up with the wrong people. The suspects are soldiers just returned from the war. Among them are Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan and George Cooper. As the story unfolds with each soldier telling his version of the story it slowly becomes clear as to who the killer is. But that is not the point as you will know by now.

The film was done on a low budget because no one felt there was an audience for this kind of picture. In the end, the film not only made money but was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, (Edward Dmytryk), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Ryan) and Best Supporting Actress (Gloria Grahame).

Dmytryk has said that he used the film noir style because it was cheap and they had no budget, and noir required less lighting. True story or not, the use of low lighting, dark streets, cheap hotels and shadows created a noir classic.

Robert Young holds his own amongst some heavyweight company, but its Robert Ryan who provides a classic performance as the sadistic bigot Montgomery. Ryan, of course would go on to play a long assorted list of vicious characters in his career. Interesting enough Robert Mitchum is given a supporting role in this film even though by now he was a star. Crossfire was produced by RKO Pictures who Mitchum was under contract to and probably was forced to do the film, even if the role was not the lead. Gloria Grahame is on screen for only six to eight minutes but gives a tremendous performance as a dance hall girl, who spends time with Mitchell (George Cooper) the soldier who is at first incorrectly identified as the killer. From what I have read, Grahame, who has an abusive husband on screen, was going through a similar situation in real life and that may have led to some added authenticity that otherwise might have been missing.
Either way she is fantastic as usual. In the short, that accompanies the film on the DVD, it’s mentioned that Dmytryk used different lens when filming Robert Ryan. In the beginning, he used a standard 50mm lens showing Ryan’s character as normal. Later on he used a 40mm and still later, a 35mm and finally a 25mm on Ryan so he could reflect the distorted craziness of Ryan’s character, Montgomery. Crossfire is a film not to be missed.

The second side of disk 3 had orange juice spilled on it early on. Fortunately, my dad was able to transfer most of the games on that side to disk 16, so I'll get to those games at that point. In any case, here are the games from the first side.

Pacman

Ah, Pacman. Possibly the world's most famous video character ever (although that may now be Mario). Born from a Japanese programmer who was eating pizza and got struck with inspiration. In case you don't know for some reason, the point of Pacman was to eat all the dots in the maze, avoiding the ghosts along the way. There were some larger "power pellet" dots that temporarily turned the ghosts blue, allowing you to chase them for a short time. There also occasionally appeared some sort of fruit, which was worth extra points. That's it. The maze never changed, the object never changed; the fruit would change and the ghosts'd get faster. That's about it. Yet it became one of the most popular games of its generation. Mainly because it was the first real non-space-based arcade game. Maybe because, in its simplicity, the game is still fun to play and requires quick reflexes to master. In any case, it's Pacman.

Here's a trivia note: did you know the ghosts all had names? And that one of those names was "Clyde?" You may never look at this game again, knowing that Clyde could get you. Ah, Clyde.

King Tut's Tomb

King Tut's Tomb got corrupted on our disk, so I hadn't played it until I got it on an emulator recently. The goal was to sneak through King Tut's tomb, stealing his treasure while avoiding the dangerous creatures along the way. Shooting undead cobras kills them, apparently. Along the way you needed to pick up keys to open the keyholes blocking your way, eventually culminating in the GIANT DOOR at the end, which contained a big lamp. Unique to this game was the ability to customize your controls a bit, and the shield factor: instead of instantly dying when you were touched, the denizens of the tomb drained your shield until you reached 0, at which point you'd become a cute lil' skull and crossbones.

King Tut's Tomb was mostly a shoot-em-up in a maze. It was pretty fun, but nothing outstanding. Give it a try, if you're bored.

Centipede

So disk 3 apparently had a lot of the more famous early video games on it, and Centipede definitely falls into that category. You were a little gun-type apparatus trying to rid your mushroom field from bugs, including a spider that'd jump around and some sort of slug, maybe(?) (it looked like a fairy) that'd turn your mushrooms different colors. The main pest, however, was the eponymous centipede, who would slowly wriggle its way toward your end of the field. Shooting a section of the centipede would split it into two different 'pedes, who would then both invade your space by different paths. Completely destroying a centipede would get you to the next level, where everything changed colors and went faster.

This game was another one of those early reflex-dependent games with little else going for it. There was no music, and the sounds were just of your gun firing and the centipede moving around. Still, its simplicity can make it a good coffee-break game, and there are dozens of versions available for all platforms, so grab one and rid your mushroom farm of pests in style!

Ms. Pacman

Trying to entice members of the female gender into playing video games, the Pacman guys came up with this little gem. The object is the same: eat dots and fruit, ghosts chase you, etc. etc. The differences, however, made up for the shortcomings of the first game: there were several different mazes, the ghosts behaved slightly more intelligently, the fruit (or other object---you can make out a pretzel in the screenshot) moved about the screen, and, of course, Ms. Pacman herself had an eye and a cute lil' bow. In addition, every few levels you'd have a little intermission portraying the budding romance between Pacman and Ms. Pacman. My favorite was always the chase scene, although the stork scene is an interesting one as well. Since it improves on its predecessor, I'd say play this one over the original, although I'm not personally a giant fan of either. Sadly, Clyde has been replaced with "Sue," which isn't nearly as cool.

Berzerk

Yet another classic, this game takes place in an electrified maze. Your object was to kill all the robots in a room, and then hightail it out of there before a smiley face known as "Evil Otto" strolled along and zapped you. Rinse and repeat. Otto would also yell at you whenever he'd come after you or you left a room (calling you a coward if you left before killing all the robots) using digitized speech, ooooooooh!. Although basically another shoot-'n-run game, Berzerk became notorious for actually killing people playing it. So to those who would like to be chased down by a sadistic smiley face in a world where even touching the walls kills you, I say, enjoy Berzerk. . .but take your heart medication first, and make sure you are not pregnant, elderly, or injured in any way. Good luck!

Crossfire

Hey, it's a not-classic game! In Crossfire you were shooting at little aliens who resembled Chinese lanterns on a grid. The trick was, the aliens were coming from all sides, hence you were caught in the "crossfire." Occasionally a spiky thing would pop out of the middle boxes and you could grab one for extra points. When you killed a Chinese lantern it'd come back as a different-shaped alien, and when you finally rid the grid of all offending attackers, you'd move to the next level, where---you guessed it---the aliens would move and shoot faster. What is it about these old games anyway? I mean, come on, you can do more with 64k of memory than that! Crossfire can be fun for a bit, but in the end it's just another shooter, and there are plenty of other superior shooters out there. I'd say pass this one up.

Fast Eddie

Fast Eddie was an interesting, colorful game. You were the title character, a fat, hatted man with apparently only one leg, and you were stuck in a platform/ladder-style board. Strange blue creatures of different styles ran around underfoot, and glowing objects (such as the fish(?) in this screenshot) floated above your head. On the top level one of these creatures, colored brown, had exceptionally long legs and could not be jumped over. The object was to collect ten of the glowing objects, each of which would shorten the legs of the guy at the top. When it was as short as the other creatures, a key would appear above its head, which you then needed to grab to make it to the next level, where the objects would change and you'd do it over again. Each time you cycled through the different object types the layout of the ladders and blue creatures would change: on a certain floor there might now be two creatures or three running around, or one big fat one, or some combination. It was these combinations that gave this game replay value aside from "get the high score" and, as a run'n'jump game goes, this one was fairly fun. I'd say give it a shot, even if it was just to see what silly objects you had to collect.

Fish? Really?

I've done three of these reviews within 24 hours, and I think I'm going to take a break before launching into disk 4, which is the first disk so far where both sides worked. So stay tuned for Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong, Jr., Congo Bongo, and Mario Brothers!

Have you ever wondered about which computer product magazine is the best one to subscribe to, or do

Have you ever wondered about which computer product magazine is the best one to subscribe to, or do you just have a ton of subscriptions to each magazine? This review condenses the information so that you can decide which magazine is the best for your needs.

We will be looking at the following:

"Computer Shopper"

"PC World"

"Computer act!ve"

"Personal Computer World"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Computer Shopper"

This is a magazine which focuses more on buying products and reviewing them for consumers that want to purchase the most efficient machine for their desires. The most recent issue has focused on walking users through the process of building a PC step-by-step, and has reviewed various laptop and desktop models ( XPS, Dell, Gateway, Shuttle) in a variety of inspections. This magazine usually divides up the laptops so that the reader can flip to whatever type of machine he/she is willing to purchase and just read the reviews in that section. For example, if I wanted to buy a gaming desktop, I could flip to page 13 of the June 2008 copy to look at an Alienware Area-51, or read reviews for the new Gateway FX, and so on and so forth.

The magazine also features monitor reviews and computer part listings, for example the review of the NEC Accusync LCD24WMCX or the XFX nforce 790i ultra motherboard. With numerous listings, the computer tends to be for the computer enthusiast who has general knowledge about graphics systems and computer parts. Although it is more for the computer enthusiast, the magazine also caters to the occasional beginner; Computer Shopper does a neat job of explaining each part and even has a section at the end of its magazines called "geek//:speak" where a few terms are explained. In this issue, Matthew Murray, writer of "geek//:speak" wrote about SLI and Crossfire, explaining to the novice computer builder the benefits and cons of both. He also defined DSLR, which some know as a digital single-lens reflex camera. However, as a caution, some terms may have to be researched by novices to fully understand them. This magazine features not only computer and parts reviews, but also camera criticism to help those looking for a camera. As an overall magazine, Computer Shopper offers a precisely cached all-around magazine which works for experts and beginners alike, although the beginners will most likely have to do extra research to understand what is being talked about.

One thing to note, the magazine does not usually talk about MAC products, mostly for the Microsoft user. Also, ads are seen in this magazine, almost one every 5-10 pages. This is not as bad as other magazines. Computer Shopper offers an exceptional all-around review of software, hardware, and computer parts.

The subscription price for this magazine is $15 for 12 issues.

Source: http://freemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/computer-shopper-march-2007.JPG

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"PC World"

This is an interesting magazine. It has a nice boutique of information ranging from software reviews to hardware reviews, but is plagued with advertisements on every second page which can be EXTREMELY annoying when someone just wants to read an awesome article written by one of the staff writers. The ads are probably there to lower the cost of the magazine, but when they become a nuisance it may just be better to have them all at one end of the magazine instead of scattered throughout. The subscription price of this magazine is $15 for 12 issues, the same as Computer Shopper but with more ads. But enough of the ads, lets look at the content.

PC world basically analyzes a wide range of topics from the new anti-virus software present all the way to the One Laptop Per Child program. The magazine does an exceptional job of displaying the pros and cons of each item, and also has numerous links to its online website in each article. This magazine has one thing that others do not: it also analyzes video games such as GTA 4 or Halo 3. Other magazines simply talk about hardware or software, but this one talks of video and computer games. PC World is a great magazine, except for its annoying ads, and does not focus on teaching people how to build computers so much as it does rating graphics cards or rating new laptops. The ratings are usually in a compiled chart and are easy to comprehend by readers; this helps pc builders in knowing what products are out in the market for purchase.

This magazine also reviews digital cameras and internet service providers, interesting things which are not seen in other review digests. In one of its issues, PC World talked about Fios and Dial-up, comparing the two, and then comparing the winner (Fios) with Cable and Comcast to see which one was the greatest. Things like this are not seen in other magazines.

Overall, the magazine PC World encompasses a great variety of topics. If it weren't for its plethora of ads, I would say this could be one of the best magazines.

Source: http://mobilevodoo.com/images/stories/Ebook/pc_worldNov2007.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Computer act!ve"

In comparison with the past two reviews which are mainly made in the USA, this magazine is established in the United Kingdom. It advertises on its July 2006 issue that it is the "UK's Best Selling Computer Magazine." If it is, lets find out.

For starters, just like other magazines, this one includes various ads from computer parts and whole pc sellers. Basically, this magazine has just as many ads as PC World but also has a larger fan email and Dr. Computer section. This magazine also has the "Jargon Buster" section, which is similar to the Geekspeak section in PC World except that it is much longer and more in depth. The technology which is written about is definitely much more in depth.

This magazine does not really graze on computer reviews or part reviews, more so focusing on software explanations or helping users with their pc problems. In the July 2006 edition, the magazine looks at printers and cameras, as well as games like Half-life 2.

One of the nice aspects of this magazine is its "Workshops" section, where it walks a reader through the long steps of some complicated process. For example, in this issue it teaches a user how to set up a web forum and how to create CD labels. The process of setting up a website forum is tricky, but this step-by-step workshop helps put it in the face of a basic user.

Overall, this is a nice magazine for someone who doesn't want to know about computer parts and computer reviews. This is a magazine for the software junkie and the basic computer user. The subscription cost of this magazine is 12 pounds every 6 months. This can be converted to almost $24 every 6 months.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Personal Computer World"

The mother of all PC Magazines, this one includes EVERYTHING needed for the hard-core computer nerd! This magazine has hard-drives, operating machine, gaming computers, notebooks, laptops, crossfire gfx cards, SLI chipsets, even draft N wireless key reviews! Everything for the computer enthusiast is in this magazine. In the August 2006 issue, a pure 194 page extravaganza awaits the reader with only about 20 ads throughout the entire compendium of computer items.

This issue caters to the XP user and also the UNIX/Linux users with various program reviews for all three operating systems. This magazine is really for the expert, with line-by-line of linux and unix code which only programmers would understand. For example, on page 145 the writer Barry Shilliday writes "To create a full archive of your home directory, run tar as follows: $cd /home $ tar cfvj /tmp/backup.tar." Obviously, if you are not an expert computer user you wouldn't understand these two commands, which are linux shell commands.

Lastly, this magazine has an extensive amount of items included in the "Buyer's Guide" present at the end of each issue. This is a very extensive list of graphics cards, notebooks, hard drives, motherboards. . . Everything that the computer builder needs to create a piece of art! The reviews of each piece really help a user gain an understanding of what he/she will get if the piece is purchased.

Overall, I would recommend this magazine for the expert PC user and builder. This compendium is the largest magazine reviewed in this post, and has more information on pc buying and building than any other PC magazine. All in all, this is not for beginners, for they will get VERY confused as soon as they read the first page. This magazine is intended for expert computer users and features no "help" section like in other magazines.

This magazine's subscription costs 23 pounds for 12 issues. This can be corverted to $46 dollars for 12 issues.

Source:

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o272/softarchive/img32/65232_s__personal_computer_world_ju.jpg

I hope this article has helped your understanding of the PC magazines. Good LUCK!
