Cuddler: Congo African Grey "Cressi"

I can’t even begin to list the numerous amounts of websites I have come across stating that African grey parrots are NOT cuddly; example 1, 2 & 3 (and mostly found in the social advice-giving settings and not from professionals). Kooky Congos writes some good stuff on the myths of grey parrots on a whole if you feel like diving into it; I really appreciated what they had to say about the un-cuddly myth.

Well, my grey parrot Cressi proves them all wrong. I hand raised her, hand fed her from 2 months of age and she is more cuddly than my cockatoo is which are known for being “cute and cuddly” birds!

So, when reading various websites with loads of information on parrots – take all the information you read with a grain of salt. Even this one! Not everything applies to every single parrot and if most grey parrots aren’t cuddly it isn’t because they were born un-cuddly, it is because they were raised to be un-cuddly.

Same applies for “mean birds” or “aggressive”, “unsocial”, etc… birds are not born mean, unsocial or aggressive, they are raised to become unsocial, mean or aggressive by the owners – not from their birdie genes. Just always remember, every bird is different their behavior is normally a reflection on how they have been raised by their owner(s).

My military macaw plays HARD. And that is why he plays with Dave, and not me! Here is a video of Cash actually playing…

Cash also loves playing hard with his toys. He goes through (I kid you not) about 20 toys per month. Luckily, the $50 toys that are about 3x the size of him last a couple days longer than the rest and are hilariously fun to watch him in (if you can find him!)

Other than Cash who is our hardest player, I have my newest baby addition named Bandit who is a young rose breasted cockatoo (galah) and probably the most fun to play with. He loves to roll! He rolls in the sheets or any type of cover and flips out squawking and having a grand ‘ol time! Sometimes he even gets so carried away he rolls himself right off the bed…

I have watched that video a hundred times over, laughing hysterically each time at how cute he is and that was not the first, nor the last time, he did that either! Here is a picture of Bandit rolling, too. It's a little blurry because he never stops rolling!

Bondi, my older cockatoo will do something similar but not as playful or over the top as Bandit does it. Cressi, my African Grey parrot, loves to flip! She will be perching on my hand or Dave’s and will suddenly just flip herself forward and hang there talking and playing! She just loves it and when she really wants to do it, there is no getting her upright! She even began doing it on other surfaces such as at the batting cage on the net she was hanging upside down picture-perfectly for my photo…

Hanging Upside Down: Congo African Grey "Cressi"

My toucan, Fiji, loves playing tug-a-war with pretty much anything that belongs to you.

Every bird is different so finding out what your bird likes is essential to your bird’s mental stimulation so play around and figure it out. It is usually discovered by accident! I remember we were shocked the first time Cressi flipped upside down and we immediately thought she was mad at us for it or that we somehow caused it. With Bondi, she one day just rolled over on her back and then walked over to me and did it again. And Cash was a real shocker! We didn’t know he really liked playing rough until he kept coming back for more! They will tell you either way if you give them a chance and really get down and speak their language.

Hoje, meses depois, não tenho o que falar, todo material que comprei é excelente, porém, o curso de rescue é aonde testamos demais o equipamento pois é uma rotina muito intensa de retirar e colocar de forma rápida e foi exatamente neste curso, na semana passada que um clipe da minha máscara se soltou. O clipe esta marcado em vermelho na foto abaixo:

Esse clipe faz parte de um conjunto que prende a correia da máscara, fiquei preocupado pois não se trata de uma peça que você acha em qualquer lugar, falei com meu instrutor e ele disse para tentar comprar um kit da cressi que vem esse conjunto de peças, mas isso deve custar uma grana pois é importado, não tem no Brasil. Eu conseguia encaixar o clipe, porém sem a cabeça do pino, não havia pressão para mantê-lo no lugar, eu corria o risco de perder minha máscara em algum momento.

Passado o sufoco, assim que cheguei em casa, comecei a analisar a máscara e percebi que o encaixe é feito por alguns dentes (foto abaixo)

e o pino que eu perdi servia para fazer a pressão de dentro para fora nesses dentes e mantê-los fixo no lugar. Para substituir isso fiz uma coisa simples, o pino é vazado no meio, então neste espaço eu enchi de massa durepox, a massa ficou rígida em umas três horas e pronto, os dentes não conseguiam voltar para a posição inicial e então tive minha máscara de volta.
Fiz tudo isso com cuidado para não tirar os movimentos do pino e nem grudá-lo de forma errada, comigo deu muito certo e minha máscara esta zerada novamente. Outro ponto importante é que minha máscara não foi prejudicada em um ponto que suporta a pressão da água, se o caso fosse esse, nunca teria feito nada para consertá-la, pois obviamente não teria jeito.

É isso, sempre que algo acontecer, análise para ver se tem correção, antes de sair gastando uma boa grana.

Bathers: Congo African Grey "Cressi" and Galah "Bondi"

Above is a polaroid photo I took of Cressi and Bondi. Cressi is now a 7 month old Congo African Grey and Bondi is a 3 year old Rose Breasted Cockatoo (galah). Bondi has been bathing for years now, but Cressi had her first shower a few months ago when this was taken.

I have two shower perches in the shower; one is close to the water for Bondi and the other is on the opposite side for Cressi where she just barely gets some mist (she was never a fan of water).

One day while having them both in there with me, Cressi decided to fly straight to my head which was under the water completely! It took me by surprise and she got soaked immediately! She got up on my hand and I put her back on the perch and she started mimicing Bondi's actions of bathing and fluffing her tail which was super cute. When I took them both out after their shower, they both began drying off and preening and I happened to catch Cressi in the middle of it!

I just spend a wonderful seven days vacationing in Key Largo, Florida. While there, I went to eat at the Key Largo Conch House 2-3 times! In the entry way of the restaurant, there is a big white cage. This is Romeo's cage, a 4 year old Congo African Grey parrot.

Now, I was really excited to meet Romeo since the last time I was in Key Largo, the cage was empty. His owners take him home every night from the restaurant and I was there too late. This time, though, I came for lunch!

Romeo reminded me so much of my own grey, Cressi, who is only 6 months old. He was sitting happily content and all poofy when his owners came near or any sort of familiar face. He was a bit shy but not scared - he just didn't want to show off his talking abilities around me yet.

I was so happy to see someone else had a grey that was not entirely plucked or insanely phobic of strangers. His cage placement was perfect for him and he was outside on the porch as well, in the shade but still catching the light breeze and the soft sunshine. He had gone through his fresh veggies and fruit for the day as I saw bits and pieces left in his dish. Another thing I was thrilled about - he wasn't a seed eating bird! In fact, Laura (his owner) went on to tell me his favorite dishes from the restaurant. This African Grey not only eats well but eats full blown beautiful looking meals! I think Cressi would be envious to find out she wasn't getting a variety of cooks making her meals every day!

Romeo really had it made. Anyone who wanted into the cute little restaurant had to walk by him and almost every single time, they stopped to say hello to Romeo. He was constantly getting interaction from all sorts of people and was always visually stimulated by his environment. His wings were also another thing to be proud of - when I looked at them I actually thought he was fully flighted but Laura said he's just barely clipped so he can still fly pretty well but it doesn't look bad, either. I loved that his wings weren't just snipped to bits like most.

The Conch House is family owned by Laura and her husband Ted, along with their two kids. We met them all and it was the daughter who talked the family into getting the bird in the first place when she was around 15 years old. She is now heading off to college and mom gets to keep Romeo in the mean time and the two have grown quite attached but Romeo was open to anyone as he gets properly socialized every day. This was one African Grey that was not in any way, a one person bird or had any problems whatsoever. I've never seen such a content grey before. And I was so happy to meet him and his wonderful owners.

Romeo's owners are a great example of people who truly did their research before buying this bird. They knew it would live over 60 years and they knew it couldn't live on pellets or worse, seed, for all its life. They really read up and they've done an amazing job at giving this bird a proper and healthy home. If Cressi liked older men, I think she'd be interested in Romeo!

A roupa é um item extremamente necessário e também cara.
Com ela além de ter o conforto de usar algo que é seu e parar de pagar pelo aluguel na loja na hora de mergulhar, você acaba por ficar mais adaptado com a roupa, isso influência e muito na sua flutuabilidade, no teu conforto para vestir a sua roupa entre tantas outras coisas, questão de costume mesmo, tem gente que acha nojento usar roupas de escola o que na minha oopinião é uma grande bobagem, roupas usadas em operação devem ser muito bem cuidadas pela operadora ou terão um tempo de vida muito pequeno e os gastos vão ser altos...

Bom, mas e ai, qual o momento de comprar ?
Isso vai de cada um, o meu momento foi no check-out do curso avançado.
Até aquele dia, eu jurava que iria comprar uma roupa simples de 5mm e blz, pois sou muito calorento e cheguei a sentir calor no check-out básico mesmo com a chuva que estava, mas nosso mergulho mais profundo naquele dia foi de 12m.
No avançado, com a mesma roupa de 5mm da operadora fomos a 28m, 13 graus, quase congelei cada centimetro do meu corpo, foi um desconforto total o lado bom é que tive que trabalhar muito o meu psicológico para aguentar ficar la embaixo e cumprir todas as tarefas. Cada metro que deciamos pela corda parecia facas entrando no corpo de tão frio, foi extremamente complicado.

Naquele dia, saquei logo que eu teria que comprar um roupa semi-seca de 7mm ou 7,5 mm para aguentar.
Claro que quanto mais fundo mais frio e eu estou no plano de carreira da escola para me tornar instrutor, logo, vou ficar muito tempo na água com alunos e mesmo fazendo um mergulho recreativo, vou ficar bastante tempo na água, suficiente para começar a passar frio durante o mergulho o que é bem desconfortável.

Portanto vale minha primeira dica, se você não vai ser um mergulhador básico, vai mais fundo, vai para naufrágios e essa é sua idéia, compre um roupa semi seca.

Diferença da semi-seca para a comum?

Na roupa semi-seca o fluxo de entrada e saída de água é menor, isso mantém você mais aquecido pois ocorre uma troca menor de água. Normalmente este tipo de roupa vem com capuz, algo em torno de 50% à 70% do calor do corpo é perdido através da capeça, você vai notar uma tremenda diferença neste acessório que vem agregado a roupa. Os zipers são feitos de outro forma, que evita ao máximo a entrada de água também.

Na roupa comum, além de geralmente ela ser mais fina, em torno de 5mm, a troca de água é maior o que acaba por facilitar a perda de calor pelo corpo e dai para frente é começar a sentir frio. Ela é perfeitamente indicada para mergulhos em águas quentes, lembre-se que existe a hipotermia que é um mal causado pelo frio excessivo do corpo, porém também existe a hipertermia (acho que escrevi certo) que é o calor excessivo do corpo, mergulhar com roupa semi-seca em recife no verão por exemplo, pode causar esse segundo nome. Mas claro isso depende de pessoa para pessoa, como eu falei, espere o seu curso avançado ocorrer para dai então você começar a notar a necessidade de uma roupa ou outra.

Atualmente no meu ver e dentro de minhas pesquisas, a Narwhal em São Paulo oferece o melhor preço para comprar roupas de mergulho.

Nunca usei esta roupa, porém ela é bem falada e muito mais barata que as outroas por estar entrando no mercado, vale apena conferir no site da loja ou na loja fisica que fica na marginal pinheiros ao lado da Leroy Merlin.

A grande sacada é:
Pow cara, não tenho grana para comprar nada, o que eu faço?

Seguinte amigão, quando você for mergulhar, no mínimo você vai ter que alugar uma roupa de operação na operadora de mergulho. Então, se você esta sem grana para comprar a roupa, compre ao menos um capuz e luvas, você vai ver que boa parte de seus problemas estarão resolvidos, como já falei, boa parte do calor do corpo se perde pela cabeça, com apenas a ação de por o capuz (que é vendido separadamente em qualquer loja de mergulho) você já resolve boa parte, comprando a luva então, melhor ainda. Você encontra estes acessório por vários preços, mas muuuuuuito mais enconta do que comprar a roupa toda e com certeza vai quebrar seu galho assim como quebrou o meu.

Caso vocÊ ainda esteja sofrendo, com o frio, compre uma roupa interior térmica.
São camisetas ou macacões de neoprene que você compra e veste por baixo da roupa de mergulho, geralmente estes acessórios tem uns 2mm ou 2,5mm para mais, você pode comprar e utilizar por baixo, o que vai ajudar e muito a superar o frio das águas.
