A man robbed an armored vehicle in Monroe, Washington yesterday. Nothing new there, but there's twist. To distract anyone hot on his trail, he had contracted a mob of people from Craigslist to his gettaway route to act as a decoy. They were all wearing same maintenance outfits as the fleeing robber. What a movie stunt.

Here's more from the local news channel King5:

"I came across the ad that was for a prevailing wage job for $28.50 an hour," said Mike, who saw a Craigslist ad last week looking for workers for a road maintenance project in Monroe.

He said he inquired and was e-mailed back with instructions to meet near the Bank of America in Monroe at 11 a.m. Tuesday. He also was told to wear certain work clothing.

"Yellow vest, safety goggles, a respirator mask… and, if possible, a blue shirt," he said.

Mike showed up along with about a dozen other men dressed like him, but there was no contractor and no road work to be done. He thought they had been stood up until he heard about the bank robbery and the suspect who wore the same attire.

Ever. I hate that stupid thing. So I get up and get dressed and truck halfway across town, argue with yet another paranoid nazi security guard only to find that I've been lured to the office of a tourist publication who wants me to convince one of my clients to advertise with them. I'm not an ad buyer. I present information and the client decides. The whole thing took 10 minutes and left me incredibly annoyed. He was probably talking with his mouth full of marbles on purpose to throw me off.

To console myself and because it's gotten to the point where I'm actually embarrassed to be seen with my feet in public, I went to the marina for a pedicure. I managed to cut a deal where I got a 75 minute massage and pedicure for $45. I like deals.

I was given my massage by a strapping young man, who I told, as I do with all my masseurs, that I like a lot of pressure. I'm a stress case. I need a hard massage. The whole thing ended up being so ridiculous and bad that I couldn't even get pissed about it. It was like being massage by an epileptic during a seizure. Fits and starts, weird pounding and grasping of my flesh completely without rhythm. When he was done with a particular limb, he would drop it without ceremony back onto the table. He also kept shoving the table around the room for some unknown reason. So relaxing. The back part wasn't bad but the rest was awful and to top it off, he would randomly come up and scratch my head, like I do with my dogs, exactly three times and then move off to some other part of my body. This brought back terrible memories of Stalker 1: The Petter. How I made it through 75 minutes without just walking out is anyone's guess. At least my pedicure, given to me by a very nice transgendered person, was pleasant and turned out great.

My ad was flagged and removed from CL, how shocking. Craigslist has turned into the biggest piece of shit ever. I used to love CL but the flaggers are in total control. It's not even worth it to post something legitimate. It's pathetic and sad that people have nothing better to do than sit around and police ads. Curious, I headed to the CL flag forum where I found the saddest and most pathetic losers ever "helping" people by critiquing their ads like they were entered into some literary competition. It doesn't matter if the ad doesn't actually meet any of the reasons for flagging (miscatagorized, prohibited, spam), instead now in order for the hive mind to keep your ad up, you have to post a photo in your personals ad, you need a phone number to sell your car, you can't misspell anything, and so on and so on. I mean, people could just IGNORE the ads that they don't like, but that would be too simple. It's so much nicer to sit around in your little cubicle and pretend like you are an ONLINE CLASSIFIED AD GOD. Well, have fun flaggers! It's probably the only power and prestige you will have in your sad little lives (except for those times you ascend from your basement and manage to get the remote away from your grandma).

Now I'm going to take a nap.

While in Europe I was searching for ways that I would be able to make money during the next school y

While in Europe I was searching for ways that I would be able to make money during the next school year. It just so happened that I StumbledUpon someone's blog that talked about starting an extremely part time business with candy. I was intrigued because I had never thought about what you could do with candy and vending machines. As I read on, I realized what a good idea that this guy had.

What It Is

By now you have undoubtedly walked into a store, repair shop, business that had a tiny candy vending machine in the front lobby or in the back of the store. Usually this machine has 1-3 slots filled with M&M's, Red Hots, Chiclets, you name it. What he did was very simple. He started with a hand full of machines costing about $200 and began placing them in businesses around town that he thought would benefit from the vending machines.

How Good Can This Really Be?

That's the question that I was asking myself. If a person only puts in a quarter for a handful of candy, how good can this business really be? The secret to it's success is finding high volume areas and having a lot of machines. If you find a really good area you can make anywhere between $50-$150 off of a machine. That's all in quarters. You would need to go to the machines about once or twice a month to refill them, clean them, and get your quarters. Now, not every machine is going to get you $50-$150. He admitted that some of the machines only got about $5 a month. But the important thing to remember is that you already have the machine. All you need to do is to keep your eyes open for a good spot to move the machine and it will become more profitable. Also, another thing about this little endeavor is that you need to be able to "Cold Call" people or be able to hear people tell you know. You must first ask for permission to place the machine at their business. Your pitch can be that it will pacify kids in the store or make employees happy. That is about all that the business will benefit from. You could offer to give them 10% of the proceeds, but on $50 that is $5. Not really a big deal to a company. You could offer to give it to a charity if that would make them happy.

What I'll Do

I recently found a listing on Craigslist for a handful of these machines. I will be going out on Wednesday to take a look at them and possibly purchase 1-4 of the machines. The previous owners of the machines claimed that the machines brought in about $50 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and that they had 24 of the machines in operation at one point. Not bad for almost passive income. This couldn't be better for a college student. The machines cost about $60 which is a DEAL because a lot of times these machines will go for $150+. I'll try to get a discount for buying several of them, but either way I'm getting a great deal. I'll update what happens in the days to come.

Take-Away

What can you take away from this? You could start searching for these machines to make money. I have heard of several people that have tried to do this with mixed success. It all hinges on you and your ability to find good spots and talk with managers of those businesses. The biggest point to take away here is to always be on the look out for opportunities. This is something that Robert Kiyosaki would call a "small deal". It's important to find "small deals" so that you can later get the "big deals". There are small deals all around you. You just have to think outside the box to find them.

Risultato: migliaia D compravendite internazionali D vecchi I-Phone "liberi" su siti come eBay o Craiglist a prezzi che vanno dai 300 agli 800 euro.
A proposito: anche su eBay Italia sono in vendita diversi i-phone D prima generazione sbloccati, attorno ai 400 €uro. Che vengano da Soho?

OVERWHELMED???!!!

As I sit here at the PC thought I would take time to ask are you overwhelmed? As I awoke this morning my brain was hurting from all the internet information that I have researched over the past months about internet marketing, promoting, product sourcing and you name it I have done it.

Forget the fact that my nickname from my friends and family is Ms. Information, watch it now careful how you say that, we all from time to time get overwhelmed.

With the MySpace, Facebook, Youtube, MyBlogLog, eBay, Amazon, Ecrater, Craiglist, MSN, Alexa, SEO, Yahoo, Google, Wagglepop, Ioffer, Jott, Twitter, stand-alone websites, subscribed newsletters, email, blogging, e-books, forums, membership sites, video, talk radio shows, Web 2.0 now web 3.0 ('the intelligent Web'), my friend your friend and every bodies friend, it's a wonder that there are still strangers in the world. PHEW!!!

I just sometimes have to stop and punt, relax and take the load off. Being a research and information geek, love the stuff, it was bound to happen sometime and more times than we would like to admit. I tell ya there are times when I just can't take anymore! OMG! Information and technology just keep expanding and expanding. The more there is the more I have to know. Forget knowledge is power how about knowledge is addicting!

Yeah I know there are ways to reduce this overwhelming feeling but oblige me for a moment in my vent to say it is just sometimes to much!

The first part on the way to recovery is yes to admit it and then sit back and work through it the best you can.

Now isn't this ironic that I am blogging about this and using the exact technology that is a part of my overwhelming feeling. Believe it or not there is some therapy here just being able to blog about it and get it out.

Well now that I have done that time to get back to the information and research seeking mode. I heard someone say, "If you ever feel overwhelmed just think you could be deceased." Kind of morbid but there is some truth to that, huh?

Here's to you my overwhelmed friend, now go and relax! :)

Have you heard the news? Apparently the long tail is flat. For those of you unfamiliar with the long tail, it's a theory coined by Chris Anderson (The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More) that describes the niche strategy of businesses that sell a large number of unique items in relatively small quantities. Because of the low overhead incurred through the selling of digital products, the long tail was supposed to help retailers of less popular items earn significant profit by selling small volumes of hard-to-find items to many customers (instead of only selling large volumes of a reduced number of popular items).

For musicians, the long tail of music was supposed to help redistribute the wealth a bit in the music industry. It was supposed to shift the industry away from having a few big artists that earn large profits to having many smaller indie/niche artists that earn moderate profits. The notion behind this was that through digitization, niche releases are more accessible to fans and thus easier to discover, purchase, and consume. Through this long tail of music, a musician's middle class was supposed to have been formed. Well, where is this musician's middle class that Gerd Leonhard and Dave Kusek wrote about a few years ago? Why has the long tail not proved to be commercially viable? Why aren't niche artists profiting from their art online?

I suspect that the long tail theory is still viable for indie and unsigned artists to make money from their works. It's undeniable that given the low overhead of making and distributing digital music, an artist could sell less and make more. Plus, there are more licensing/placement opportunities today than ever before and there are plenty of sites that help musicians leverage this. But still, why then is the long tail flat?

In my mind, there are three main reasons:

First, Creative Commons licensing has failed to help musicians monetize their works. Any notion of CC providing a viable profit mechanism for musicians is a pipe dream. The purpose of CC licensing is to expand the range of works available for others to legally share and collaborate on. It's clear that this is the direction that Copyright Law should go in. It's also undeniable that CC has a noble purpose that contributes to more creative works for the general public to enjoy. But, CC hasn't actually been leveraged to make artists licensing works under it any money.

While the reason I make music is not to make money, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a little profit from my works. Perhaps, CC has overlooked this. With the vast number of works distributed under CC, how can their collective power be leveraged to compete against the market power of bigger acts. Isn't this what the long tail is all about? If CC doesn't figure this out, how can it reasonably expect to be an appropriate solution for distributing creative works? Right now, CC licenses seem like a better fit for reference works that people can use to share knowledge. But for unique works of art, the notions of sharing and monetization must be intertwined. Wouldn't you rather your favorite artists not get a day job so that they can always be making new music for you?

Second, long tail artists haven't been working collectively to distribute their music. It's hard to argue against the power in numbers; simply put, the more people that work together on a common purpose, the higher the chance that purpose is achieved. This is the underlying theory that the American Revolution was built on ("Join or Die" anyone?), that collective bargaining is based on, and that a shit ton of sites on the web base their successful business models on (Craigslist is a classifieds aggregator; eBay is an auction aggregator). So, why aren't long tail musicians taking advantage of this?

There have been some attempts to do this, and some are even successful. Magnatune, for example, aggregates CC works and sells them in an Itunes style store. But the biggest vault of CC works, ccMixter (CC's own music sharing/collaboration community), has no monetization whatsoever, not even ads (which its artists could perhaps see a rev share on). Why hasn't ccMixter leveraged the collective power of its community to make its members some money? Because of this, CC licensing seems to be more effective as a marketing tactic than a new rights management system -- license one song under CC, have fans share and remix it, and have this exposure trickle over to other songs which are sold.

Merlin is a good example of an organization that is thinking about the collective power of long tail musicians. Merlin is the world's first global new-media rights licensing agency that manages new-media rights for indie artists. The collective market share of Merlin artists is larger than EMI's market share. That's right, its market share is on par with the majors. Through this mechanism, indie acts can punch above their weight to eat like a bird and shit like an elephant. And while Merlin dropped the ball a bit on the Last.fm negotiations, it wil be successful if it can find novel ways to leverage the power of its artists.

Third, long tail musicians haven't been presented with the right ways of creatively distributing their music so that they can actually make a profit. Despite the digital boom, it's still hard for unsigned and indie musicians to make much money form selling finished songs. While it's easy to give fans the option of buying a song, the reality is that more music is now being distributed than ever before and musicians have to compete against other long tail musicians and the many options consumers have to get the music for free.

What seems to be happening is that long tail artists are stuck on the notion of just selling finished works. If Merlin fails, it will certainly be because of this. Instead, long tail artists need to look to aggregating as many sources of revenue as possible, and to create as many value adds for their music as they can. A finished song should only be a part of the value proposition an artist gives a fan. If these value adds are engaging and give fans a new experience, they will convert casual fans into loyal fans and will give them a reason to financially support artists. While there are tools on the web such as Topspin, ReverbNation, and AWAL that currently target indie and unsigned artists, these services need to recognize that focusing on selling finished works may not be entire answer.

So how are we to aggregate and distribute the long tail of music so that its collective power starts making an economic fuss? How do we improve music discovery so more of these artists get discovered? And if we're not able to sell songs, what other kinds of value adds can we give fans to boost our brands and how do we monetize those value adds? The answers to these questions are at the heart of a the type of service that unsigned/indie musicians need to profit from their works in this new era of music. Soon, we will all find out.

How lazy ARE you?....ahaha...ha...ok not funny.

Yeah well I'm so lazy that I know I need to exercise because I haven't yet this week and this weight loss thing isn't going to happen if I don't move my big fat ass. So I'm sitting here looking up directions for a park thats in the area and, apparently, very nice. There's a lake! And boats! And FOUR different trails! It's bigger than Central Park! Aaand their website also has a little list of things that you can do to stay active. Adults are encouraged to "get moving!" for at least 30 minutes a day. One of the things on this list is walking your dog.

I am so lazy that instead of going running I am seriously considering getting onto craigslist and offering to walk OTHER people's dogs. You know, not like I could be allergic...or just ask a FRIEND to go for a walk.

Funny though, I'm lazy about that but my mind is FILLED with ideas about where I'll be tonight, who what I'll be doing, how many (not boring) people will be there, how much beer will be there, etc. This one guy I know is having a party but I don't know if I'll go because I find him incredibly boring! And I NEVER think people are boring. But he has a Wii! Damn that thing is fun to play with. I bet that's why he got it - to compensate for his lacking social skills.

I bet I'd get moving if I got a Wii and a Wii Fit. How much are those things - 6-700? I wonder how fast I can make that at work?!

TIP #7 - TAKE THE FIRST STEP.

I'm just learning to apply this to my life...it's the only way anything I want really gets done! Today, my mom was hired for a new job so she was jumping around all crazy and excited (it was sweet). Her getting that job really inspired me. Her own business she started was going very, very slow for a few months and so she hopped on CraigsList and found a legit job (not a scam at all!!). When she went for the interview 3 weeks ago, she got a call saying they hired someone else but would call her if it didn't work out....that was disheartening. And WOW how amazing is that?! They actually called her out because the other person didn't work well! See what an effort does? She put herself out there and actually got the job eventually! I was proud she took that first step to get some consistent money because I see how bad it hurts her trying to provide for an entire household of grown people with just my dad's paycheck and occasional clients...that my mom for you :) she's a soldier despite the fact that me and her can DEFINITELY quarrel....but anywho, congrats to my mama for her new job as a medical office receptionist :D

I also took the first step in searching for new venues for my birthday. I think it gave my mom that extra push because she saw I'm now really determined & desperate to have my birthday somewhere else and NOT at the house. Afterall, my birthday party needs to be NEXT WEEK and I have 50 + people on my guest list!! I'll keep you all posted. As you can see, my household always have a thousand things goin on at once.

All in all, take the first step, something might work out well for you. Take a risk too while you're at it.

- Saab.

P.S. The perfect song for this entry is: Jordin Spark's "One Step at a Time." I definitely reccomend it ;)

The things that make me tick this week:

1. Music videos from Islandrecords artists Sam Sparro and Cut Copy. I've been in desperate need of some music to dance to and since my finger and toe tapping Girl Talk days are in need of a break, I feel that I've found a decent replacement.

2. The Wire. This show is badass. McNulty is perhaps one of the best alcoholic, hard headed, cops television has seen in a long while. Everything you hear about this show is true, it is addictive and awesome.

3. Missed connections. Craigslist has been a source of sheer amusement for me as of late with the multitude of "missed connections" posted daily. There's a guy crushing on a girl in the red tube top driving a Mazda down I-20, a teen that frequently shops at Best Buy because of the cashier that rang him up on check-stand 3 and then, of course, the Marta train encounters. Endless entertainment.

4. Trivia Night Okay, so I can't really count this since I only went once, but I'm all about winning free food and drinks for my varied pop-culture and worldly knowledge.

5. Frederico Erra's photostream on Flickr, particularly "violet place".

6. GOOD Magazine. It's tag line "GOOD is for people who give a damn. It's an entertaining magazine about things that matter." With it's stimulating commentary on important environmental, economic, and cultural issues as well as it's unique coverage on unknown objects and quirky travel spots, this magazine is what it says.

7. The Black Keys and Sea Wolf. I already went through a Black Keys stage where they were all that was buzzing on my iPod for weeks, but now I've revisited Magic Potion and I can't get enough of it. Leaves in the River is also some really swell stuff.

I'm in the process of writing another short story as well as expanding and editing a story I wrote for my short stories course. Expect something of the child's tale type genre involving oranges someday soon. Farethewell.

"Some 44% of people who saw a product or service advertised in a newspaper in the past month researched it - and two-thirds(67%) of that group went online to find more information."

The survey of 1,003 search engine using adults who also read newspapers(an estimated 82 million people in the US) finds that among those who go online to research a product, nearly half(47%) go directly to a product URL, 31% go to a search engine, and 22% go to another site.

We moved to Toronto's suburbs in late 2006. By then, my Subaru Outback was 1 year old and we were totally in love with him.

With life in the 'burbs, we soon found out that we need another car. We leased a brand new VW Rabbit, cause I saw it's ad in Rolling Stone and thought it was cool.

Fast forward 5 months, and we had it with the life in suburban Canada: we missed the busy corner at Yonge and Davisville! We sold the house immediately and moved back to our beloved Merton Street.

** **
So we don't need 2 cars now, and I really can't get out of the lease 1 year into it. The logical and sad conclusion: we sell the Subaru

Besides the obvious, paid Auto Trader advertising, here is what I used for free to advertise the sale:

Flickr: created a set for the car's pictures. It's here. It includes the whole word-description of the sale.

Facebook - post on Marketplace

Facebook - uploaded a link

a little story here, on the blog

free ads on Kijiji and Craiglist

free ad on the intranet at my office

I'll probably do something (like a Status change) on MySpace, but it's down now.

Any more suggestions?

(in the picture, a view to Merton Street, as it looks behind the buildings. There is a walking path equally enjoyed by dog-owners, cyclists, young parents and joggers)
