Jim (my sister's ex and Abbie's dad) owed me a past-due balance of $135 for child care services provided from March-August of 2008. Because his firefighter salary of $3,600/month leaves him roughly $25 after all his bills are paid (or so he says), he told the mediator he needed to split this balance over the months of September and October.

(Of course, he managed to buy a new car - a Saab! - and a pure-bred German Shepherd puppy with that $25, but he can't buy his daughter clothes that fit; nor can he pay for her care while they both work. I'm in awe of how far he can stretch a dollar-- or twenty-five. Truly.)

After a heated argument during Friday morning's pick-up where he flatly refused to pay any child care expenses, he returned with Abbie at 5:30 PM, along with this coffee can full of change for me, and a cashier's check for Kristi. Payment for services rendered, or something like that. My guess is his lawyer told him to pay up or he'd end up back in court for contempt. (I'm actually a little bummed he paid us.)

I am not a coffee drinker, but I'd like to point out that this is the BIG can. Do you know how much a 44-ounce can filled with PENNIES weighs? I'll tell you. It's 23.5 pounds. We weighed it, and as soon as our scale dries out (thank you, Anthony), I'll snap another photo and post it.

     Filled nearly to the brim.

The magazine is to provide scale.

A side view, to show how high they were piled. It was at least 4".

Pennies to the left, dimes to the right, with two quarters and a $1 coin in the center.

My fingers were FILTHY, along with the carpet. I'm not sure what he put on them, but a good share of the coins were sticky, and most were covered with a black substance. If I should happen to fall ill in the near future, perhaps one of you could direct the hospital staff (or coroner, whatever) to the 23-pound coffee can full of pennies? Who knows what sorts of diseases they were covered in?

I'd also like to state that there were several short, black curly hairs mixed in with the coins. Ew, ew, eeeewww.

Notice my hands. They are so black you can see my palm-prints clearly. It took three washings for the black to come off. They still feel a little sticky.

You're looking at $31.50. That means I *should* have 3,600 pennies left to tally. Of course, Jim insisted that I trust him, even reassuring me he had counted the coins twice to be sure of their accurate total. I assure you, I trust him about as far as I could pick him up and throw him, javelin-style.

Kenny is making a trip to the Coinstar machine later tonight, where I'll redeem Jim's tantrum into an i-tunes gift card and an e-certificate for Amazon.com. I'll let the machine count those potential 3,903 coins to verify their total.

In parting, I'd like to pose this question: For his repeated insistences that he was unable to get to the bank to put these coins into cash or check form, how was it that he managed to pay Kristi with a check drawn from his bank? Dated the same day?

My guess is, he had to ASK the bank for pennies to fill that can. And dimes. It was no coincidence that I had exactly $30 in dimes, I'm sure. Nor was it a coincidence that dimes and pennies are roughly the same size, making it extremely difficult to separate them for counting.

Classy. Such a great guy. I can't say it enough.

Now that people are cashing out of everything in this market, many people are buying gold, it has kept its value very well, but the volitility of it has been crazy, many days it can be up or down 5% with ease. But during this time I have noticed that silver has fell like crazy. It was $19.70 when gold was $950. But silver has gone down to $11 when gold was $900. That is over a 40% drop for silver.

In the past I have made a good deal of money on silver, I bought a lot for under 6 during 1996-1998. I sold the last of it when silver hit $19.50 at the start of this year, but I have never seen a change this large this fast in silver. Look at this chart to the right. This may be a great time to buy silver. Of course if you plan to buy silver, nothing is better for me than silver bars or coins. Most coin places sell these for 20 cents above the quotes price, and will buy them for 20 cents below the current price. This is how they make their money, but you get the item itself, and it is better than hoping the bank you buy the paper from does not fail, or you have a problem getting it done. Also you can give them as gifts, and sell them to friends and such and pay no transaction fees. Also it is easy to save, when I was in college I would buy two ounces every time I sold a computer, after a few years I had a few hundred ounces.

Yes, strange sentence right? Even mathematically it's impossible. But that's exactly true...

Strange noises were coming from my washing machine during the high-speed rinse cycle (think loud clanging noises as if some people are fighting an intergalactic washing machine war in the washing machine), so after 2 whole weeks of trying to get the service staff to come down to my place, which they eventually did, the culprits are....

[caption id="attachment_94" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Yes, the Worthy Coins"][/caption]

They have been stuck to the draining filter (and yes I tried unscrewing the filter cap but they are stuck in the tracks so the filter can't be unscrewed) and during the high rinse cycle, they knock themselves against the propeller... which sounds like a intergalactic war..

[caption id="attachment_95" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="$ave $ome Money...."][/caption]

For those of you who experience this alarming sound, dun worry, no aliens in your washing machine... just look out for the drainage portion and remove any alien objects...

Last tip: listen to your wives, mothers, mother-in-laws: REMOVE THE DARN COINS & EVERYTHING ELSE FROM YOUR POCKETS BEFORE THROWING YOUR DIRTY LAUNDRY IN THE WASHING MACHINE!!!

Yes, the bill for the service man to appear at my place and remove the coins added up to $80.25. Go figure...

Although there is much confusion over the origin of the word
"sterling", there is general agreement that the sterling alloy
originated in what is now continental Europe, and was being
used for commerce as early as the 12th century. The sterling
silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925.
Sterling is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and
7.5% other metals, usually copper.

The terms "sterling" and "pound sterling" acquired their meaning
in more than a century, and from convergent sources. There are
three possible origins for the word "sterling". Two originate from
12th and 13th century coinage, and one is generally discounted.
The word could have derived from the Old English word "stiere",
meaning "strong, firm, immovable".

An alternative explanation put forth by Walter de Pinchebek circa
1300 is that sterling silver may have been known first as "Easterling
Silver". The term "Easterling Silver" is believed to have been used
to refer to the grade of silver that had originally been used as the
local currency in an area of Germany, known as "The Easterling".

This "Easterling" area consisted of five towns in northern Germany
that banded together in the 12th century under ...

Platinum fell today, the most in four months on speculation
that demand from the auto industry would drop, since that is where
it is mostly consumed, while output has stabilized. Palladium also
dropped. Platinum closed at $1,630.00, down by $106.00, and
Palladium closed at $365.00, down $14.00 as of the NYME close on
August 1, 2008.

U.S. auto sales remained at the lowest annual rate in 15 years,
in July 2008. That fueled concerns that demand will decline for
platinum and palladium for auto-emissions control parts. Production
in South Africa, the source of 78 % of the world's supply, has stabilized
after power shortages disrupted mines in January. As of August 1,
2008 the production of Platinum was reported at 36,282 ounces.

Johnny wanted to have sex with a girl in his office, but she already has a boyfriend.

One day, Johnny got so frustrated that he went up to the girl and said, "I'll give you $100 if you let me have sex with you." But the girl said NO. Johnny said, "I'll be fast. I'll throw down the money on the floor, you bend down, and I'll be finished by the time you pick it up."

She thought for a moment and said that she would have to consult her boyfriend. So she called her boyfriend and told him the story. Her boyfriend says, "Ask him for $200 and pick up the money so fast that he won't be able to get his pants down."

So she agrees and accepts the proposal. Half an hour goes by, and the boyfriend is waiting for her to call. Finally, after 45 minutes, the boyfriend calls and asks what happened.

She responded, "The bastard used coins!"

Lesson of the day: Always consider a business proposal in its entirety before agreeing to it. If not, you just might get screwed!

This past week, the US Mint published updated material on the new, 2009 Lincoln Cent program, which will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the coin, and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.

From the US Mint website:

In 2009, the United States Mint will mint and issue four different one-cent coins in recognition of the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the first issuance of the Lincoln cent. The reverse (tails) designs were unveiled September 22 at a ceremony held at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. While the obverse (heads) will continue to bear the familiar likeness of President Lincoln currently on the one-cent coin, the reverse will reflect four different designs, each one representing a different aspect, or theme, of the life of President Lincoln.

The themes for the reverse designs represent the four major aspects of President Lincoln's life, as outlined in Title III of Public Law 109-145, the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005:

Birth and early childhood in Kentucky (1809-1816)

Formative years in Indiana (1816-1830)

Professional Life in Illinois (1830-1861)

Presidency in Washington, DC (1861-1865)

The new one-cent reverse designs will be issued at approximately three-month intervals throughout 2009. The Secretary of the Treasury approved the designs for the coins after consultation with the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts, and after review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

For collectors, there will be a variety of coins. You'll likely see each of the four cents from both the Philidelphia and Denver mints ("P" and "D" mint marks). It also looks like there will be true copper versions, with the same metal content as the original 1909 penny, from the San Francisco mint ("S" mint mark). That's 12 coins, at least.

For those who are interested, here are the four designs:

I don't expect a lot of collector activity, largely because of the low nominal value of the coin. Since there are always active movements to get rid of the penny, this might turn out to be the last hurrah for the one cent piece.

I wonder what the US Mint will charge for a roll of these pennies?

Have you ever heard the stories about people saving change and then use it to buy something big like

Have you ever heard the stories about people saving change and then use it to buy something big like a boat? I recently heard about a guy from Indiana who bought a 2008 Dodge Ram with change he saved for thirteen years, worth $26,670. These stories always inspire me, I guess because I once saved pennies when I was little to buy my beloved Timey Tell doll. For some reason the amount of $11.00 sticks in my head. I don't know if that was the actual price, or if that's what I paid towards it. Like I said, I was saving pennies, which I probably earned by doing little things around the house. I was probably about 4 or 5 when I bought Timey Tell. She was great. I was pretty much a tomboy when I was little, not much into baby dolls. But Timey Tell was different. She had this cool watch to set the time, then I pulled the string on her back, and she told me what time it was and what I was supposed to do. "It's 8:00, it's time for bed." Come to think of it she was real bossy, always telling me what to do and reminding me of what time it was. Maybe that's why I struggle with schedules and time restraints now. I have that little voice in my head saying, "It's 9:00, it's time to....it's 10:00, it's time to...come on, move, move, MOVE!!" Oh...sorry. Anniehow.

I did see first hand how saving a little over time can add up. But when I think about saving change now, it's nearly impossible since I don't use cash anymore. I like the convenience of my debit card. But then, I saw the commercial for the credit card that rounds your purchase up and deposits change into a savings account. Where do I get one of those?!?!? What a great idea!! But...I don't use credit cards. So I came up with a plan. I could do this using my debit card!!

OK, before I explain this to you, I need to let you know something else about myself. About 10 years ago, I took some college classes and two of them were accounting. I'm really not a math/numbers kinda person, but I really caught on to this and I just love the concept of bookkeeping. Everything balances at the end and if it doesn't you have to go back and search for that penny, dime or thousands of dollars that's throwing you off. Anniehow...my little "virtual change" plan kind of brings out that geeky side of me. If you don't like to balance your checkbook, you might want to stop here. Go check out my blog about how you can get free jewelry. ;-)

So here's what I do. I use my debit card for everything. I also then track all my purchases on Microsoft Money. When I enter in each purchase, I round it up to the next dollar. I code the actual purchase for what it is, and then code the "change" in a category I call rounded savings. It's really good for when I pump gas. I could never stop the pump right on the dollar, so now every time I pump gas, I'm saving money. So at the end of the month I run a report of my "rounded savings" category and see how much I need to transfer into my savings account. The way I actually do this is at the end of the month I credit the rounded savings category and then debit it. This is then transferred to my savings account and the rounded savings category is back to $0 for the next month, and now I can actually balance the account. (OK, you're now thinking you should of checked out that free jewelry) I know, it seems confusing, but I have saved about $25 dollars or more each month doing this, and I don't miss it. This was very exciting to me, because it was a way to put money into savings very easily. Plus I looked forward to the end of the month, just to see how much I actually saved. Every little bit helps. I don't have specific plans for my virtual change, it's just nice to have a way to save easily.
