Former Megadeth members Jeff Young (guitar) and Nick Menza (drums) played the classic MEGADETH track "In My Darkest Hour" with Musicians Institute students yesterday (Friday, June 6) at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California as part of a live performance workshop.

Young recently joined the Guitar Institute of Technology teaching staff at Musicians Institute.

Musicians Institute offers a comprehensive, hands-on education in contemporary music performance, recording, guitar making, music business and film.

Jeff's entire career with MEGADETH was spent recording and touring in support of the band's 1988 platinum-selling album "So Far, So Good...So What!"

Menza joined MEGADETH for the 1990 recording "Rust in Peace" and for the next ten years became associated with the band's "classic" and most profitable era.

MEGADETH Mainman: 'Tonight I Had To Walk Off The Stage For Only The Second Time Ever'

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the band's official web site:

"Over the last six months, we have had almost a dozen [road crew] changes at monitors and sound due to visas, deaths, and inadequacy.

"Tonight [Friday, June 6 in São Paulo, Brazil] I had to walk off the stage for only the second time ever. The first [time it happened] in Toronto [during the first Gigantour].

"My apologies to everyone who didn't understand, but my ears are very important to go forward in my career, and I had to stop the show to fix this.

"I love you all, and I am sorry for the delays. But I only want the best for you."

After Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica he and bassist David Ellefson formed Megadeth. Despite looking for a vocalist, the band settled on Mustaine. While Megadeth became on of the biggest metal bands in the world, Mustaine’s was still bitter at the success of Metallica and his dismissal from the band decades earlier.

Megadeth take on the state of Alberta, Canada

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine threatened to pull the plug on the bands Gigantour show in Alberta, Canada last night after fans begun throwing things onto the stage.

According to reports, the soundboard was hit by a bottle of liquid prior to Megadeth beginning their set and an announcement was made that if anything else was thrown onto the stage then Mustaine and co would not be playing tonight.

Once the band hit the stage, Mustaine was quick to apologise about the sound problems the band were enduring before a shoe came up onstage. A few songs later, during 'A Tout Le Monde', two members of the crowd got onstage, only to be shoved by Mustaine. Once Megadeth had finished the song, they then left the stage for fifteen minutes before Mustaine returned and asked the crowd "why should I play for you if you're going to throw shit onstage?"

Eventually, Megadeth finished their set and all went back to being well in the world of the mighty Mustaine.

I will start with a well known guitarist in the metal community - Chris Broderick. Classical music is incorporated into metal very well, and many similarities can be drawn between classical compositions and heavy metal compositions, in terms of song structures and note choices. Chris Broderick plays both classical and heavy metal guitar, and incorporates these styles into the various bands he has performed with (Jag Panzer, Nevermore, Megadeth). In order to fully make use of his influences as a musician, Chris has been known to practice for 14 hours a day, consisting of 5 hours electric guitar, 5 hours classical guitar, 2 hours piano and 2 hours violin practice. That's dedication! Chris is the guitarist to the right in the following video (other guitarist - Jeff Loomis of Nevermore). Please observe the amazing technique of Chris as he uses two hands, and also listen to the classical phrases the pair play in unisen at the end. It is noticeably classical but sounds great in the context of metal. This video is taken from a bootleg at a Nevermore concert.

As stated before, metal and classical music can be compared to each other very well, but other styles are used to great effect in metal as well, that one wouldn't necessarily consider at first thought, good influences for metal. The drummer for progressive metal band Dream Theater - Mike Portnoy - states he takes influence from plenty of metal bands, as well as people such as Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Queen, U2 and Radiohead (to name a few). I suggest you listen to the music of Dream Theater to appreciate just how diverse metal can be, and how many of these styles of music can be merged into metal to great effect. Jazz is another genre that many guitarists and drummers of metal bands take inspiration from, due to the emphasis made on rhythm and note choice, that is somewhat alien to that of traditional/classical music. Fredrik Thordendal of the Swedish band Meshuggah, has cited Allan Holdsworth (jazz/fusion guitarist) as one of his main influences. Meshuggah's music has a very a-tonal quality to it, and playing of this style is also quite prominent in jazz, which is why Thordendal uses ideas of Holdsworth in his playing. Here is a video of Fredrik playing a demonstration of the unorthodox rhythmic techniques he uses when playing guitar. This video is taken from an instructional DVD of the drummer (Morgan Algren).

Sometimes metal bands take influences from places not seen as being 'common' in the music world, in terms of ANY musician who takes influence from anywhere. Karl Sanders (guitarist for Nile) takes influence from ancient Egyptian mythology in his music composition process, due to Nile being a band themed by ancient Egyptian ideas. I know people reading this must think this sounds crazy, but I assure you, the scales used in ancient Egyptian music - and any other scales that have an 'eastern' quality to them - fit very well in heavy metal music. One of the most common scales of this kind is the Phrygian Dominant Scale (5th mode of the harmonic minor scale). Here is a video of Karl playing a solo live, using these 'eastern sounding' scales. Dragonforce are a band who take inspiration from odd places, to another level, deriving inspiration from video game music and sound effects. The band states that they are heavy metal fans, and also fans of video games, and they wanted to merge the two together. Not only do they set the tone of their guitars to replicate old nintendo tune sounds, but they also use their guitars in unorthodox ways to try to create sound effects from games such as pacman and super mario. Here is a video of Herman Li (Dragonforce gutiarist) demonstrating some of the effects he does on his guitar to simulate video game noises. This video was taken from blender.

An article found on 'metalstorm', states that an influence for the birth of heavy metal, could have been the economic status of Britain at the time that Black Sabbath emerged, suggesting metal was a music for the working class people. The influence was there due to the fact that they wrote music about politics a lot of the time, and other things with could be directly linked to life in this period, in a similar way to the birth of jazz and blues in American, during the time of the African-American slaves. They sang about their own experiences and a genre of music was born as a result of the influence their lives were having on their music, in much the same way metal came out of Britain.

As you can see, musicians in various heavy metal genres are very open minded and create very colourful and diverse music, which is more than can be said about top 40 music. Perhaps if this gap was closed/built over, top 40 music would become less popular, as people wouldn't be used to it all being so different. Majority of the beats, tempos, samples and song structures in top 40 music, are all very similar, but this is not found in metal.
