Most of us living today are well aware of the way nuclear power works to this day. Perhaps not the procedure itself but the fact that its a matter of fission and that it leaves radioactive bi-products. You can't have missed out on a news like Chernobyl in 1986 and the consequences of which people still experience. Nuclear power is used today mainly as an energy source, though nations worry that some might have a more military purpose.

Reading the daily news today I stepped onto an interesting article written by Richard Gray at the brittish paper The Telegraph. It took on the subject of nuclear fusion as finally being a possible alternative sometime in the near future, saying that the experiments will be successful. Fusion compaired to fission does not leave any radioactive fallouts, instead all it leaves behind is the gas that makes you sound like "Chip and Dale" and "the chipmunks", also known as helium.

If this were to be a reality it would be a huge breakthrough in the energy debate. The way nuclear is used today for energy purposes is being critized by many, yet I'd say its the far most efficient source of electricity that we have available. Water, sure, for the countries that have loads of it. Wind? Its just for environmental friendly illlusionists. Coal, oil and the sorts is an asset that is thinning, not only in the amount available to us but also in a matter of thick ozon layer. Walking around with an iron umbrella can after all be quite heavy? Don't you think?

Lets give a cheer and cross our fingers, toes, legs, arms and tounge for the scientists at Rutherford!

The article about nuclear fusion at The Telegraphs' homepage can be found through this link:

Nuclear fusion energy project could lead to limitless clean electricity

Via the article you can find a picture futuring an overview explanation to the fusion process, but if you'd rather just want it right away you can click here.

I came across these pictures a couple years ago, but was just reminded of them after listening to some debate about nuclear power and the 21st century. Remember in grade school when they made you bury some shit in the ground and called it a time capsule? Now this is a time capsule! We need more nuclear disasters, if just for the images years later. But in all seriousness, there is something surreal about a city abandoned for 22 years. The city abandoned is not Chernobyl, but Prypiat, which was a city of 50,000. About 300,000 persons were evacuated in total and they were only allowed to take 1 suitcase a piece. Word has it, this mass evacuation is how Yakoff Smirnoff made it to the US. What a country! Ok, I made that up. Enjoy.

Hello and Welcome to my blog.

To start off, let me introduce my self. My name is Dennis, I am a 20 yearld old Ukrainian born living in Canada. I love to travel and have always had a profound interest in history, especially the classical era which includes the great empires of the Romans, Grecques, Persian and more. Although I have always had a strong interest in a much more recent and known event. For the past few years, the Chernobyl accident of 1986 has been holding my curiosity hostage therefore during my yearly trip to Europe, I decided to comply with the demands of curiosity. I decided to go to visit the so called "Zone of Exclusion".

This site will be a narrated photo album of my journey trough Chernobyl and its neighboring city, Prypiat.

What Matters—an audacious undertaking by best-selling editor and author David Elliot Cohen—challenges us to consider how socially conscious photography can spark public discourse, spur reform, and shift the way we think. For 150 years, photographs have not only documented human events, but also changed their course—from Jacob Riis’s exposé of brutal New York tenements to Lewis Hine’s child labor investigations to snapshots of torture at Abu Ghraib prison. In this vein, What Matters presents eighteen powerful stories by this generation’s foremost photojournalists. These stories cover essential issues confronting us and our planet: from climate change and environmental degradation to global jihad, AIDS, and genocide in Darfur to the consequences of the Iraq war, oil addiction, and the inequitable distribution of global wealth. The pictures in What Matters are personal and specific, but still convey universal concepts. These images are rendered even more compelling by trenchant commentary. Cohen asked the foremost writers, thinkers, and experts in their fields to elucidate issues raised by the photographs.

Some stories in What Matters will make you cry; others will make you angry; and that is the intent. What Matters is meant to inspire action. And to facilitate that action, the book includes an extensive “What You Can Do” section——a menu of resources, web links, and effective actions you can take now.

Cohen hopes What Matters will move people to take positive steps——no matter how small——that will help change the world. As he says in his introduction, the contributors’ work is so compelling that “if we show it to you, you will react with outrage and create an uproar.” If, says Cohen, you look at these stories and think, “What’s the use? The world is irredeemably screwed up,” we should remember that, historically, outraged citizens have gotten results. “We did actually abolish slavery and child labor in the US; we abolished apartheid in South Africa; we defeated the Nazis; we pulled out of Vietnam. As the saying goes, ‘All great social change seems impossible until it is inevitable.’ ”

E' vero, a Reggio Calabria c'è poca microcriminalità.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has officially announced that they have temporarily flipped the switch off for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), also known on this blog as the Big Super Colliding Muther (BSCMF), due to a "glitch". In case you are wondering, "Glitch" is scientific terminology for "it's broke".

Here is the tricky part...They revved up the BSCMF on September 10th. They successfully spun some stuff this way for a while, then they successfully spun some stuff that way for a while...then something broke, and they flipped that infamous switch to turn it off just one day after turning it on. One week later, they decide to let the world know that they encountered a "glitch".

After so much fanfare on this machine why would they wait a week to release news that it is broke only a day after turning it on? If the press hadn't inquired on some rumors, they would probably still be keeping it a secret. I guess on some level we should be happy that they aren't telling us about their "glitch" from inside some "doomsday" bunker and wishing us all the best of luck.

So, the BSCMF overheated or something like that. No big deal. It is bound to happen when you have mega-tons of equipment and about a billion moving parts. These scientists are smart, but they are still human and therefore aren't perfect. They may be certain that their big science project is safe and not going to cause the end of the world, but how could they have known it was going to over heat?

"Glitches" are no big deal, right? They are just harmless little errors that occur and rarely lead to anything bad happening like nuclear meltdowns, airplane crashes, ships sinking, etc. Sure, it is rare, but it does happen on occasion, and generally when it does it is isolated to large or fairly new technology with lots of moving parts. Here are just a few examples of some of the worlds most famous "glitches".

Chernobyl - April 26, 1986 at 1:23:45 a.m., reactor 4 suffers a massive, catastrophic power excursion, resulting in a steam explosion, which rips the top off the reactor like a soda can, exposes the core and disperses a crap load of radioactive junk, allowing air (oxygen) to contact the super-hot core of combustible graphite moderator. The burning graphite moderator thereby increases even more the emission of radioactive particles.

Space Shuttle Challenger - January 28, 1986 - Disintegration of the shuttle began 73 seconds into its flight after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The seal failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it filled, allowing a flare to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent attachment hardware and external fuel tank. The SRB breach flare led to the separation of the right-hand SRB and the structural failure of the external tank. Aerodynamic forces promptly broke up the orbiter.

Japan Airlines Flight 123 - August 12, 1985- All 15 crew members and 505 out of 509 passengers died, resulting in a total of 520 deaths. About 12 minutes after takeoff, as the aircraft reached cruising altitude the rear pressure bulkhead failed. The resulting explosive decompression tore the vertical stabilizer from the aircraft and severed all four of the aircraft's hydraulic systems. No stabilizer and no hydraulic systems pretty much means you have no control of the aircraft other than velocity of your engines. Therefore, you have several minutes at a high altitude to contemplate your life and your impending death while the plane flies around at its own volition waiting to crash into something. Many of the passengers on this flight had time to write letters to their loved ones.

The Hindenburg - May 6, 1937 - The German rigid airship Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed within one minute while attempting to dock with its mooring mast at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. Of the 97 people on board, 35 people died in addition to one fatality on the ground. No one knows for sure what caused the fire on the Hindenburg. There are some sabotage theories, but most relate to some kind of electrical spark from somewhere that caused the chain reaction. My guess is the latter and I quantify that as a "glitch" in the engineering of this gigantic flying ball of fire.

So, technology is created by humans, and humans make errors. Irregardless of how many brainy scientists check, double-check, and triple-check, when there are a million moving pieces you are never going to think of every possibility. "Glitches" happen every day that we don't know about, and the world keeps turning. However, when it comes to giant machines that have massive power to create and destroy, then the word "glitch" is not so innocent and harmless sounding. In fact, it can be a little ominous or scary.

Do you really want to hear the pilot on your flight say "We seem to have a glitch in our landing gear, so..."? Maybe that is cool with you, but it would have me reaching for a clean pair of underwear in short order.

All I am saying is that "glitch" is no simple word to be dismissed or taken lightly at any time. It is serious business that costs companies billions and in worst case scenarios it costs lives.

As for the BSCMF, I am sure that glitches will be a normal routine in the beginning, and I really hope that it has a very long and healthy future ahead of it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that one of the glitches doesn't cause some unforeseen chain-reaction that sucks our world down some huge cosmic toilet. That would really suck.

That's just my opinion...and it ain't worth much.

Prof. Dr. Irina Gruschewaja is one of the first persons being active in the non-government Chernobyl movement since the atomic reactor explosion in 1986. So far she has helped over two million people in Belarus with vacations for Chernobyl vicitims, gifts, medicine and goods from international givers, she has spoken infront of various international audiences about Chernoby, atomic power and it's consequences. Now, she turned 60 years - which are indeed 60 years of humanitarian, independent and renewable power especially for the children and the future. I've met her several times in Germany and Belarus and I'm still impressed like from the first day on when I had met here in Minsk / Belarus. In 2006 (the 20th Chernobyl year) while staying at the German Government (Bundestag / Berlin) - I called her NGO one of the first and only true remaining Belarussian NGOs regarding Chernobyl - I did it infront of Belarussian and German politicians, guests and other NGOs - which caused a lot of evil glances and words of envier in my direction. Prof. Dr. Irina Gruschewaja was indeed nominated for the peace nobel prize, but we all know who got it in 2006: The IAEA - the same Association which denies any link between Chernobyl / radiation and illness and death.

So, what can I say? If you want to congratulate too, visit her website: Irina-Gruschewaja.de

130,000 barrels of middle and low radiative waste, kilograms of Plutonium and Caesium 147 - 750 meters below. Asse 2 was and is the world's first underground disposal for radioactive waste. And then this scandal:

Long lasting leak in Asse II

Now, Germany's environmental minister Sigmar Gabriel takes over the Asse II disposal - the federal environmental agency "Bundesumweltministerium" is now responsible for Asse II. The new operator is the federal agency for radiation protection Germany - web - known from their KiKK study.

The former operators State Office for mining, energy and geology in the German federal state Niedersachsen (Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie / LBEG) - HERE is their website and the “Helmholtz Zentrum München” / Munich - HERE is their website failed to operate the disposal properly.

Both did not react on their website.

Asse II is full of holes, as Gabriel said. He added, the cause of fault is not clear.

Let this be a learning experience for all pro atomic power activists.

Sept. 1st 2008, Minsk / Belarus

One of the leading atomic physicists in the former Soviet Union, Prof. Vassili Nesterenko has died in Minsk. He was one of the last independet scientists in Belarus and a liquidator during the Chernobyl catastrophe (atomic reactor explosion in 1986). I met him in person in April 2006, in Geseke / Germany, during a Belarussian-German meeting "20 Years of Chernobyl". It was an honour.

Heres a sneak preview of the new gallery I will be adding to my website:

The gallery features photographs taken in and around the premises of the condemned houses on King George Road in South Shields. These buildings have been marked for the chop for some time now and have thus become a hang out for the local chav gangs (aka scumbags) who have decorated the place with various graffiti and litter, as well as vandalising all the buildings.

Now, as this is the height of summer (supposedly) all the buildings and gardens are now over grown with plant life and resemble a scene more reminiscent of the abandoned cities of Chernobyl or Pripyat in the Ukraine.

Thats something I've always thought seemed interesting is how our world would look if we left it, so thats really where the inspiration for these shots come from.

The gallery itself will hopefully be online in the next few days, so stay tuned and I hope you'll enjoy it.

This morning Mr. Uggs had a link to this set on Flickr. I don't have the same Chicago roots or nostalgia levels as my fellow preroggers, but I do love a good abandoned building. According to the photographer:

Edgewater Hospital was founded in 1929 and most of the current buildings were constructions in the '40's - '60's. It's famous as the birthplace of both John Wayne Gacy and Hillary Rodham Clinton. In 2001, the hospital abruptly closed its doors permanently when its management and many of its doctors were found guilty of committing Medicare fraud.

The set is a treasury (and sometimes a children's treasury) of empty hallways, a creepy morgue, strange equipment, labs, people's medical records and funny signs. Judging by Comtesse's other sets, abandoned buildings are kind of her thing.

It reminded me of a book my sister has. I love pictures of places left behind and the warm post apocalyptic feeling they give me. As this same sister said, "Post Apocalypse is my favorite historical period."

Which then got me thinking about my brief trip to New Orleans over a year ago.

I was there for a conference but dipped into the Lower 9th when a plucky volunteer offered to take me out of the French Quarter. It was awful and fascinating and sad all at once. The image above was taken almost two years after the hurricane.

I think what I like about the EMC photos, the Chernobyl book and to a lesser extent my pictures of NOLA is the idea that little pieces of the world are ending everywhere but we never get to see it unless we go looking.
