I've been sent the press release announcing the finalists in Mentor UK's CHAMP Award:

Supporting the Government's crackdown on juvenile drinking as outlined in the Youth Alcohol Action Plan, the search for the most innovative and effective work to prevent children and young people from misusing alcohol has been narrowed down to twelve projects from across Great Britain. Mentor UK, the alcohol and drugs prevention charity, is delighted to announce the finalists of the 2008 Mentor UK CHAMP Awards (Promoting Children's Health through Alcohol Misuse Prevention) in three categories: schools, communities and young people's involvement.

This biennial awards scheme founded by Mentor UK and supported by Diageo Great Britain, recognises those working with children and young people (14 years or under) to prevent alcohol misuse - both now and in their future lives. The finalists have been chosen by a panel of experts, including teachers, health professionals and drug prevention specialists. They have shortlisted projects that address risk factors such as boredom and lack of aspiration, and that take into account factors that protect young people from alcohol misuse, such as encouraging achievement and motivation.

As Eric Carlin, CEO of Mentor UK and chair of the Judging Panel states:

"The media constantly bombards us with negative images of young people - especially around misuse of alcohol. The Mentor UK CHAMP Awards proves that there are alternatives and that there are great projects out there helping young people make sensible choices and live healthy lives."

The twelve finalists will go on to be judged by panels of the very people they are working to protect, children and young people. The shortlisted projects all demonstrate best practice in the field, and the children and young people will be looking particularly for the most creative and innovative entries.

The twelve excellent projects shortlisted include a football club in Thorplands which works with young people, some of whom have been excluded from school, alcohol workshops from the Churches Action on Substance Misuse and a poster campaign designed by young people in Denton which promotes the message that their town is an alcohol free zone in relation to underage drinking.

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Institution in London in November. Winners will each receive £10,000 this year, and up to a further £10,000 of mentoring and practical consultancy support in 2009.

The champ effort of this week goes to a young gun down at Sydney Nick Malceski who pulled out a ripper of a game in a tight win against the eagles. Malceski scored 134 Dream Team points in the swans 5 point win, he provided some great run from the half back line and stood tall in defence when needed.

Nick suffered his second ACL Reconstruction in the pre-season this year, its injuries like these which can put young guns who could make it big out for the rest of their career wasting such great talent. Luckily for Malceski the miracle artificial ligament surgery he had this year has so far had been very effective and it was great to see the Malceski of last year which got him runner up in the swans best and fairest...

Malceski finished the game with 28 possesions, this included 24 kicks, 4 handballs and 12 marks! Dream numbers for coaches out there. He also managed to snag 2 goals, well done Malceski lets hope that artificial surgery is a long term success as it wont only greatly benefit Malceski himself, but the whole footballing community as it offers a way to get players back on the track quicker than ever before with soft tissue injuries.

While researching the art of storytelling in the Middle Ages for a writing assignment, I discovered an article on the subject that had been published in a rare journal. Intrigued by the information its summary promised, I searched several library archives. To my dismay, no one had a copy. Some time later, I related my fruitless search to a friend. She thought for a moment and suggested that I visit a tiny monastery library in a small Midwestern community. I promptly phoned the monastery. Within minutes, I was speaking to a pleasant reference librarian. When I asked about the journal, she replied, “Why, yes, we have that issue, and you are welcome to come and copy the article.” Elated, I arranged for a time to meet her.

When I arrived at the library, a gracious woman showed me to a desk covered with books and journals. "I hope you don't mind," she said, smiling. "I got interested in your subject, so I found other authors who had written about it as well. I've gathered them here for you and have dedicated this copy machine for your use."

What a wonderful gift! I had expected to search in a dreary, poorly lit back room for one journal, but a CHAMP provided me with more than I had hoped for. That kind librarian not only increased my knowledge, she saved me time as well!

Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer in one of the greatest Wimbledon finals since it started in 1877, 6-

Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer in one of the greatest Wimbledon finals since it started in 1877, 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7.

With rain expected and coming down earlier this afternoon, it wasn't until 14.35 local time that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal started. Rafael Nadal struck first blood, breaking Federer's serve in only the 3rd game. Nadal faced a break point in the ensuing game but held on and went into a 3-1 lead. Some excellent serving in the 5th gave Federer the game to love.

Each player held serve up to 5-4 where a thrilling 10th game went to Rafael Nadal, taking his 3rd set point after having had to face 2 break points. Nadal had constantly and cleverly served to Federer's backhand and constantly beat Roger in rallies throughout the first set with immense forehands, taking the opening set 6-4.

Federer took a early break in the 2nd game of the 2nd set with a superb cross-cort winning and rallied into a 3-0 lead. Nadal didn't break back until the 7th game and held onto his own serve afterwards to tie the set 4-4. Nadal then broke an edgy Federer and served out the set, 6-4 having taken 5 games straight.

The first 2 games went with serve and at 30-0 on Federer's serve in the 3rd, Nadal slipped awkwardly. After calling the trainer on after losing the game no medical treatment was given and Nadal was happy to continue. Despite this and Nadal facing break point in the 4th game he held onto serve and tied the 3rd set 2-2. Federer held onto his next service game and Nadal had to save 4 break points in the next to tie the set 3-3. Roger Federer then took 5 points in a row from being 0-40 on his own service game. Both players held onto serve up to 5-4 in the 3rd set before the 1st rain delay.

This may not have gone down too well Gwen Stefani in attendance! Although maybe the tennis didn't either, we only saw her smiling once or twice whenever and often looking bored and miserable when she was in camera shot!

The players came back onto centre court after the rain break and restarted the action at 18:10. Federer was unable to return any of Nadal's first 3 serves but fought back to deuce only to lose the game shortly after.

Both players won their next games comfortably and setup a 3rd set tie break.

The first 5 points went with serve before Federer took an important 5-2 lead going into serve. He took 1 of his service points that left him with 3 set points. Nadal saved both on his serve before Federer aced him to win the tie break 7-5 and the 3rd set 7-6.

All 12 games in the 3rd set were held by the servers without any break points being face. There were some great serves, shots and rallies.

Roger Federer broke Nadal in the opening tie break point with a fantastic rally. Nadal then broke both of Federer's serves for a 2-1 lead. Nadal held his next 2 to take a 4-1 lead. Rafael Nadal took 1 point from Federer's serve to take a 5-2 lead and going into serve. Rafael Nadal double faulted the first and netted the 2nd allowing Federer back into the match 4-5 down. Nadal was unable to return either of Federer's serves to give the Swiss champion a set point of his own. After a long rally, Federer's forehand-winning attempt sailed just wide: 6-6. Nadal also held onto his 2nd serve to give him a Championship point on Federer's serve. Federer belted his serve and Nadal could only cushion the ball. Nadal then broke Federer's serve with a stunning forehand winner running across the baseline. Federer saved it with a fantastic backhand up the line: 8-8. Federer also broke Nadal's 2nd serve to give himself a set point with his serve coming up. Nadal's return was too long from the serve and Federer won the tie break 10-8 to take the set and the match to a 5th set.

Games went with serve in the 5th set until the 2nd rain break of the day at 2-2 40-40 on Federer's serve in the final set!

It was only a short rain break and when the players came back out, Roger Federer took the 5th game with 2 aces. Service games were a bit tight, but held by the server without break points, up to the 10th where Roger Federer was 15-40 but managed to win 4 points in a row and take a 6-5 lead in the final set. Rafael Nadal held onto his serve to make it 6-6. With no tie breaks in the final set the match had to continue until either player took a 2 game advantage.

Nadal had 0-30 lead in the 13th game of the 5th set but Federer held his nerve and held his serve. Every point in this 5th set and most through the whole match were met with loud cheers. Chants of "Roger" and "Rafa" were often heard during changeovers. The fans were fantastic!

Nadal held his serve and then went 15-40 up in the 15th game. An ace from Federer saved the first break point and an overhit shot from Nadal saved the 2nd. When Federer faced a 3rd break point in this game, he saved it with an unreturned serve. Unfortunately he couldn't save the 4th break and left Nadal serving for the match...

Chants of "Rafa" were heard during the changeover as new balls were rolled out. Nadal lost the 1st point but brought it to 15-15 with his first serve and volley of the match. Nadal took the 3rd and Federer the 4th: 30-30. A misshit backand during the 5th point gave Rafael Nadal his 3rd Championship point. But a superb backhand return from Federer saved him again! An unreturned serve setup Nadal for Championship point number 4 and a shot into the net by Federer gave Rafael Nadal his 1st Wimbledon Title.

With a huge roar from the crowd, he fell to the floor in celebration before walking over to shake Federer's hand. He then climbed up into the crowd to hug his parents, got a Spain flag thrown to him and then walked over a roof to the royal box for more hugs! After coming up short the previous 2 ocassions, this one meant so much to him. Congratulations to Rafael Nadal on his 2nd Grand Slam of the year.

''VALI TANASE a adunat cam 16-17 medalii pana acum in 3,5 ani de judo.

I cannot believe that Jollibee's Champ is now P115. For my children, Jollibee is a mecca and they are still enamored with the red bee as ever. It is a good thing my children does not favor the burgers as much as the chicken and the burger steak meal. Having four rascals on my heels every time we hit the city, and the usual request is a meal at "Ja-bee."

Good thing my children are plain at hearts and only asks for Burger Steak with Rice and the usual fries and coke and yes, they love the peach mango pies. For a family of 5, a meal at Jollibee costs more or less P500.

Certain art insiders are quietly expressing a beef with cruise auction giant Park West Gallery.

What took the world's #1 art dealer so long to shake off the jackals nipping at its heels? Why wait almost a year to put art hustling Dot Com types like Fine Arts Registry in its place? Where are the art police when we all need them? As prices on signed prints keep going up, the art jackals are closing in on the herd.

As art dealer #1, doesn't Park West Gallery have some kind of public obligation in this regard?

Art Smart doesn't have a specific answer.

He's not privileged to be inside Park West Gallery founder Albert Scaglione's head. But Art Smart does have one thought to offer all those annoyed with Scaglione's slow response.

Think back to Mohammad Ali, the champ of all champs. Think about how Ali would always let the first few rounds go. As he "floated like a bee", you just got pissed off. He's taking punches for G-s' sake! It was exasperating! Why doesn’t he just knock the guy out?

But now we know. He was slow – not because he was scared, hesitant, or shy – he was slow because he was very scientifically testing his opponent – what exactly did the other fighter have? Only then did he move forward to "sting like a bee."

Park West Gallery coincidentally represents the Mohammad Ali collection of signed photographs. For all those who wishing Park West Gallery had counter-punched a little sooner may we suggest obtaining one of those photos and putting it on the wall as a reminder of the champ and his genius?

I love watching trophy presentations; I don’t care what sport either. I just love everything about them, but more than anything else I love the emotion. And last night was probably one of the best one I’ve witnessed since the Avalanche in 2001 when Ray Bourque finally won a cup.

First thing first though, I pretty much hate professional basketball. It’s just not for me, I only watch the occasional game if nothings on. Though, I’ve liked the Suns in recent years because of their style of play. And now with all of this fixed game and paid referee nonsense being thrown about, I feel less like I’ll ever watch the sport. However this victory for Boston was a little different.

I sat watching as I usually do just taking it all in. Then Michelle Tafoya attempts to interview Kevin Garnett and everything changes. His purely emotional outpouring was exhilarating to witness. I’ll let you see it for yourself though…

I still get goose bumps watching it. That is as close to what I could imagine myself being like if I ever won something like that. It was like he was eight years old again hitting that last shot in his driveway. So many people and franchises win championships but it always seems so “ho hum” to them. It was nice to see that a player could still react in such a manner. No matter what goes on in sports; who cheats, who gets paid what, etc. This is right. This is what it should be like. If only every player cared this much, or at least showed that they did.
