Though the steady increases are due to the fact that publicly-available media coverage of corruption (and increase in number of webpages that Google can reference), the peaks in the timeline do coincide with the crises - the "insider trading" rip-off in the late 80s, the dotcom bust in the early 2000s and the leverage crisis at present.

However, a few people saw it all coming. It's too bad that one of GE's companies, NBC (Dateline NBC), didn't alert the PEOPLE, and INVESTERS, of America about the COLLAPSE of the U.S. economy last year when they had the opportunity to do so. This page (dated 3rd Sept, 2007) clearly states: "The collapse of the U.S. economy is in its infancy. Get all of your money out of the stock market and cash in your retirement NOW! Most people cannot see what is coming. I do! Americans have $4 Trillion in their RETIREMENTS!! 90% of that money is invested in the stock market. All of the clues and indicators are pointing to another COLLAPSE of the stock market. When the stock market goes, so goes American's RETIREMENTS!" I guess that story wasn't important enough for Dateline NBC, which IS owned by GE. Today, GE needs a Warren Buffett to restore confidence in its investors.

In 21st August 2007, a Harvard Business Professor said that EXPOSURE is a corporation's WORST FEAR! He also said, ''There are corporations listed on the stock exchange whose sole purpose is to line the pockets of the top executives with MILLIONS of dollars in cash.'' Read the full report here.

In any case, the US economy is headed for more pain. Just a reminder to a few people that the stage is set for the BRIC economies to rule the roost for the next 100 years....

Subprime is Wall Street's euphemism for junk. Andy Serwer and Allan Sloan:, TIME, Sep. 18, 2008

How did it start?

I am confused with the current econmic turmoil (I m with George Bush on this :) ) . So lets try to unwind the whole crisis. What is Sub Prime Lending? In US individuals with bad or limited credit history (or job history) find it difficult to get loan at normal market rates. Some institutions provide loans to such borrowers at a higher than normal (Prime) rates since it is a higher risk loan. There are other stringent terms and higher fee for such loans. Technically, the Subprime Loans do not meet the Freddie Mac (FNMA or Federal National Mortgage Association) guidelines.

The Risk Vs Reward dogma of the financial world is the underlying principle behind Subprime Lending too. Post 2001 economic recession, the home valuations rose steadily. This lead many people to invest in Real Estate through loans and mortgages. The Subprime Lending also rose significantly as the Lenders expected the Real Estate to go up and this secured their investment even if the borrower fail to repay. For the Borrower too this was a great oppportunity as , with Real Estage prices going up, after a period of time they could refinance thier loan at the mainstream rate. The borrowers were so illusioned by the rising property value that they accepted highly difficult to meet conditions for sub-prime mortgage. During 2005, the housing bubble got burst and Real Estate prices started seeing corrections. The borrowers started seeing downtrend in valuation of their property and refinancing became difficult. Suddenly the number of mortgage default rates increased and spiralled out in 2007-08. The Mortgage lenders took the hit and major lenders got knocked down. Owing to Securitization, the lenders had passed on the risk to third party investors via Mortage-Backed Securities and Collateralized Debt Obligation. So the subprime shock was passed to these investors (Corporates, Institutional Investors, Individuals) and they suffered heavy losses since the underlying mortgage asset value declined. Stock markets across the globe tumbled down as a result of these affected investors pulling out. Moreover, credit market saw tightening and it becomes difficult to get credit in such times. Loans for average borrowers becomes impossible and even the reputed ones have to pay higher rates. Demand goes down, growth is affected and recession sets in.

Who is responsible and What is the fix?

As a number of Banking and Investment Giants have started to fall on the ground, the US government has jumped in fire-fighting with a whopping $800 billion rescue package. The US administrations effort to stop the economic bleeding looks highly warrented to prevent collapse of economic machinery and unemployment (in short the Great Depression) . But is the rescue package a definite solution? Who is the real culprit and who should pay for this mess? The reckless lending by banking institutions and risky borrowing by financially unstable individuals has brought down the entire system. From my perspective the Banks behaved irresponsibly, their reckless practices' have to take the blame. The Government is financing the irresponsible guys with all hard earned money of tax payers. For years, US has considered Capitalism as an unquestionable trading method. The economic instruments in US have an absolute free hand and there is no regulation. All because of a false pride on the free market. And floating this bail out package sounds like US is taking a leaf from Marx' book and adding a flavor of its own to it. It would be appropriate to call this package policy as - Socialism For The Rich. I consider the US administrations attitude as hypocrite in this regard.

The bail out package is a short term rescue which would bring a short upswing and then system would tumble more drastically. Because the fundamental problem would still be unadressed. How justified is the exorbitant participation by banks in Real Estate Lending when Real Estate is one of the most unstable asset in terms of value? Somebody needs to define the boundary and it is imperative. Few ambitious decision makers at the helm of the banking system should not be given free way to squander the tax payers hard earned money to clean up the toxic debts.

How far would it go?

I feel the after effects of the damage has just started to appear. There is more pain in the pipe. The turmoil in US is just the beginning. The world economies are tightly integrated and that means the subprime infection is bound to spread to other countries. The pain would soon spread to EU & BRIC countries. Moreover, EU has no room for bail-outs as the concept is against the EU framework. It would be interesting to see the if the EU model really helps the constituent countries to tackle such a crisis. The BRIC Economy would undergo the Litmus test. Among the BRIC, those countries which really hold value for the future would emerge stronger after the crisis is over and it would be really interesting to see if they come out stronger enough to take on the US hegemony. I would certainly put my money on Russia and India.

Russia knows it, so it's pulling as many levers as it can in order to position itself favorably for when we extricate ourselves and face them. This time, they're tightening their relationship with one of our biggest oil suppliers, Venezuela. It's not the arms deals that are nerve-wracking - Venezuela is not a strategic threat to the U.S. in that regard - it's the oil and gas deals. We should be nervous.

This development fits well (although not perfectly) with the geopolitical evolution of the BRIC Bloc, which allies itself with the New Caliphate in my novel.

With the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) economies in much stronger shape domestically compared

With the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) economies in much stronger shape domestically compared to the sickly U.S. and their respective markets already pricing in much of the coming collapse yet to really hit the U.S. stocks I wonder when these countries will band together to form a new currency of their own? They may as well, since many global financial instruments already treat them as an economic unit (case in point).

And if these countries were to form a new global currency that's 100% backed by gold (like the U.S. dollar was from 1792 to 1971) then I suspect we would witness a global stampede out of Euros and U.S. Federal Reserve Notes into this new golden currency backed by the strongest economies across the globe. Why not call the new currency a bric? In English, the name alludes to something concrete, sound, stable, and badly needed in these uncertain times. The gold-backing shouldn't be B.S., though. Any Tom, Dick or Harry needs to know he can go to the bank with a Bric note and know he can walk out with gold.

From Brazil: Although its stock market is beaten up, its domestic economy is still very strong.
Brazil expects the odd sniffle, but nothing serious

Brazil has not decoupled itself from the rest of the world: its stock market has fallen fairly much in line with other markets but, unlike in the past, the turmoil elsewhere has not been amplified.

Brazil has been able to maintain foreign reserves in excess of $200bn to help it weather the storm.

From Russia: Now a major player in the world energy scene, Russia's central bank has recently been stockpiling gold.
Time for a gold rouble?

The decision by the US government to inject $700 billion into the financial system means that the already gigantic annual budget deficit of the American state (previously some $450 billion a year) will now rise by a factor of three. The total state debt of the USA will rise to well over $11 trillion. It is obvious that such a colossal debt can never be repaid.

Russian leaders might also consider making their own currency, the rouble, convertible into gold.

From India: The World Gold Council says that Indian citizens possess the most personally-owned gold in the world. And that love for gold is now stronger than ever.
Indian customers lured by gold's lower price

UBS, one of the largest gold exporters to India, says it has seen a spike in sales. John Reade, UBS metals strategist, says that the near-absence of jewellery demand in India between August 2007 and July left the local market largely de-stocked, "hence the tremendous pickup in demand over the past five weeks."

From China: Also big gold lovers, the Chinese government is now openly questioning the use of U.S. Dollars as the default world currency.
China paper urges new currency order after "financial tsunami"

Threatened by a "financial tsunami," the world must consider building a financial order no longer dependent on the United States, a leading Chinese state newspaper said on Wednesday.

"The world urgently needs to create a diversified currency and financial system and fair and just financial order that is not dependent on the United States."

" According to our (Goldman Sachs) latest estimates, so far this decade there has been nearly as much global demand from the BRIC countries as from the US. Going forward, their share of global demand will start to move towards that of all the G7 nations ."

Oil and commodity prices will be key factors in consumer spending for BRICS as their fall whilst affecting Brazilian export earnings should ease inflationary pressures.

Elsewhere, the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) published figures showing that more than 10m Brazilians had moved from being in the bottom third of household earnings of R$545.66 p/m (US$304.55) to the intermediate tier of R$1350.82 p/m (US$753.80) between 2001-2007.

Since 2000, income inequality has decreased rapidly by 1.2% a year. The North East, however, still has 49% of its population (25.3m) in the bottom tier of household income.

On 12th of December 2005, one of the prominent Investment Bank, Goldman Sachs, released a report highlighting the subset of Emerging Markets with a high potential to become the Largest Economies in the World. This post is a detailed elaboration on that paper which can be found on: http://www2.goldmansachs.com/hkchina/insight/research/pdf/BRICs_3_12-1-05.pdf . The paper stated:

"We also present a detailed study of the prospects for another set of developing countries, a group we call the N-11.the Next Eleven. Of them, only Mexico and perhaps Korea have the capacity to become as important globally as the BRICs, although many of them have compelling potential."

Source: Page 3 of the Paper

It used the following as a measurement criteria:

"Macroeconomic stability: Inflation; government deficit; external debt

Macroeconomic conditions: Investment rates; openness of the economy

Technological capabilities: Penetration of PCs; phones; internet

Human capital: Education; life expectancy

Political conditions: Political stability; rule of law; corruption"

Source: Page 10 of the Paper

The countries it labelled as "Next 11" were: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Turkey, Vietnam (Source: page 7 of the Paper).

The point is to highlight the developing countries which are likely to become "big players" in the world's economy, in future. Naturally, those countries are experiencing high level of growth in their GDP, and if they continue to do so, will

eventually become largest economies of the world. Pakistan is predicted to be in the 20 Largest Economies of the world by 2025 and 2050. By 2050 it is predicted to have more or less same wealth as Turkey, Vietnam, Korea, Italy and Canada.

Currently (by 2007) Pakistan is ranked as 47th (by International Monetary Fund), 45th (by World Bank) and 47th (by CIA World Factbook) in the list of largest economies in the world. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal))

Needless to say that Pakistan is expected to spur on it's economical growth -- become economically larger than countries like Saudia Arabia, Australia, Spain, Denmark, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Malaysia, Israel and so on -- all of which are economically larger than Pakistan currently.

Naturally, countries which are huge in context of population and size will inevitably become substantially big economically. Consequently, Brazil, China, India and Russia will evidently become relatively huge even with a substantially low economical-growth rate, as the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will increase substantially due to a large population. This is highlighted in the paper thus:

"In our initial report, we did exclude several other large

developing countries that have the potential to be much bigger economies in coming decades. We did not ignore South Africa.in fact we specifically showed how unlikely it would be that South Africa could reach the size of any of the BRICs despite its own potential. We excluded Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and some of the Middle Eastern nations that could become quite large, though may not have true BRICs potential. The reasons for excluding other candidates in our earlier studies were either because they lacked the potential to become large and important players (in many cases because they are just too small) or because we thought that fulfilling the conditions was an unrealistic assumption."

Source: Page 4 of the Paper

According to the paper, Pakistan scored well in "Schooling", "Rule of Law", "Life Expectancy" and "External Debt". Furthermore it highlighted that Pakistan needs to work on "Inflation", "Investment", "Openess", "Technological Capabilities", "Political Stability" and "Corruption". The full results can be viewed on pages 15-17 of the report.

In conclusion, the future of Pakistan's economy looks stronger and is predicted to straighten strongly. From the current 47th ranking in the list of Largest Economies, it's ranking is predicted to change to 18th and 20th by 2025 and 2050 respectively. It must however be noted that the predictions are subject to fallacies just like any prediction and may very well turn out to be woefully wrong -- for any country -- due to incorrect parameters and the inherent fallacies in the computational model. Furthermore, the conditions within such countries must ensure economical growth -- the governmental and economical reforms must ensure the spur in economy's growth for any country, whether be it China or Pakistan, in order for them to reach their potential.

Given the reasonably well governance, Pakistan's Economy is predicted to prosper, outpacing the economies of many of the "developed countries" of our time -- indeed reaching the listing of Largest 20 Economies in the World by 2025.

In future, I intend on examining the Richest Countries (as opposed to the Largest, which we have examined here), comparing economies of Pakistan and other countries in terms of of the past and future, and analysing the recent economical reforms that Pakistan's government has brought forth.

The Netherlands held fast to its opposition Monday 15th to closer ties between the European Union and Serbia blocking of the implementation of the Temporary Agreement. Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said his country would continue to block a pre-membership accord with Serbia until it had met the Netherlands' definition of "full cooperation" with the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands. However Serbia – and maybe Macedonia too - can have an attractive alternative to alliance with stagnated EU or to strategic short-sightedness of Washington. Good future could be with BRIC.

BRIC

BRIC is an acronym for the economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China combined. The general consensus is that the term was first prominently used in a Goldman Sachs (investment bank) report from 2003, which speculated that by 2050 these four economies would be wealthier than most of the current major economic powers. The BRIC thesis posits that China and India will become the world's dominant suppliers of manufactured goods and services, respectively, while Brazil and Russia will become similarly dominant as suppliers of raw materials. It's important to note that the Goldman Sachs thesis isn't that these countries are a political alliance (like the European Union) or a formal trading association - but they have the potential to form a powerful economic bloc.

Investing in the BRIC economies has been on the rise as increased economic globalization creates higher levels of world trade and commerce. Brazil, Russia, India and China have had strong growth in gross domestic product (GDP) over the past few decades, with recent rates much higher than those found in the United States and the Eurozone.

There are strong indications that the "four BRIC countries have been seeking to form a political club" or "alliance", and thereby converting "their growing economic power into greater geopolitical clout". One of the recent indications was from a BRIC Summit meeting in 2008, in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Serbia’s choice

Serbia’s road towards its full European integration is likely to remain filled with considerable roadblocks. Now it is ICTY cooperation but big question will if Serbia is going to EU with or without Kosovo. Other obstacles can occur on the way. In any case EU is not miraculous power which brings economic and other development with membership status immediately.

While Serbia should not close the door to the EU it could parallel with the idea of a European prospective search a couple of other alternatives.

Looking strategic alliance with BRIC countries is realistic having in mind that none of them has recognized Kosovo’s independence. Therefore at political level cooperation with BRIC has better base than starting cooperation with countries that first bombed Serbia and after against agreements and international law are trying to amputate one part away from it.

Besides increasing cooperation with BRIC Serbia can develop her society from individual needs and priorities - not because of EU. Capacity building for better administration, removing obstacles and bottlenecks of SMEs, increasing transparency of public affairs, development rule & law sectors and democratic processes – all can be done without EU guidance.

One direction to concentrate is Serb Diaspora which only in North America is size about 2.5 million while it is in German speaking Europe about 1.1 million. This Diaspora creates a great opportunity to wide markets in these regions, they offer a considerable network and also a potential for “foreign” investments in Serbia.

Bottom line

World is much more than only European perspective, new potential can be found inside and outside of Serbia and West is only one of many directions.

Knock, knock. Who's there? Jin. Jin, who? Exactly.

I don't know how many years it's been since Jin, the first quasi-mainstream Asian American MC, first broke on to the scene winning like 38 straight Freestyle Friday battles on 106th and Park. I think that was back when Free and Al Harris, I mean AJ were hosting. For those of you not in the nose, sit shotgun in my DeLorean and let's go back, waaaaaaay back, to 2001.

Jin makes massive waves in the hip-hop community after showing up on his first Freestyle Friday to go against a 6-week Champion, one victory away from an induction into the BET freestyle hall of fame. Underestimated because of his Chinese American background, Jin stuns the few thousand people watching the show on TV and defeats the defending champ. For the next 6 weeks Jin destroys every MC who faces him with lyrical dexterity that seemed, at the time, nonpareil.

On the day of his 7th victory and the day he was retired as champ and inducted into the freestyle hall of fame, Jin signed a deal with the Ruff Ryders, home of DMX, Jadakiss and Eve at the time. JIn brandished his Ruff Ryders chain after his final battle to the cheers of the crowd and however many Asian Americans watching from home in Wisconsin. Dude had made it. Dude had crossed the color line. Dude was Jackie Robinson. Dude was a bust.

Nearly 8 years later, after a mediocre first single and a sharp attack on Hot 97's Miss Jones that put on for all of Asia after the tsunami, Jin might be back. Our friend, Miss Info (not really, but we know a dude who kind of knows a dude who I think is tight with her...I think) posted a new track by Jin on her website yesterday, a remix of Kanye's VMA performance that portended his later scuffle with the law, "Love Lockdown."

A giant F-you-manchu to all the haters who dismiss Kanye for being an uppity black rapper who thinks he deserves more than he's earned. If Andre 3000 released Love Lockdown, Pitchfork and all the other fan boys would toss it in the vaunted pantheon before the 2 minute mark. Just because 'Ye didn't dance around and rhyme for you like a rapping monkey you're going to write him off as a legitimate talent? If so then you're less informed than Sarah Palin. "Now everything I'm not / Made me everything I am." Words to live by. Get them tattooed on your stomach. Oh, you already did? Nice work.

Thing is, Kanye's track is kind of tight, more enjoyable because of it's ambition than its accomplishment. Jin's track, though? Not that stellar. Dude just talks about reading Miss Info's blog, living in Hong Kong and supporting Obama for President. There is just one thing, though. Jin's line:

"But Jin, you've been long gone / Actually I'm in Hong Kong / Out there like I just got on / Russell Peters tap some bong."

This probably means nothing to the average me-first, do nothing American reader, but I feel like this is kind of a big deal in terms of the geopolitical distribution of power. Jin, a Chinese American MC in Hong Kong just referenced a South Asian comedian from Canada in a song that samples Kanye West and was released via an Asian American girl's hip hop blog to be streamed by Indians in Wisconsin. Is there anything more post-millennial than that? It's BRIC, baby. F Brazil, Diplo already pillaged that. And Russia? They're just angry and scary. It's India and China that are about to take over the world, it seems. Or at least the internet hip hop game.

Knock, knock. Who's there? Jin. Get familiar, or as Russell Peters would say, "Someone's a gonna getta hurt a real bad." WW4. Coming 2012. Jin and Russell Peters Supreme Commanders of the axis forces. Protect. Ya. Neck.

Time to raise public spending, Darling?

[caption id="attachment_199" align="alignright" width="320" caption="Time to raise public spending, Darling?"][/caption]

As the prospect of a recession looms in Britain, this may seem an odd time to talk about how the country should be preparing for the next global up-turn. However, the reality is that if the UK fails to make long-term considerations paramount in how it deals with this down-turn, the next up-turn could prove to be even more damaging than the effects of the credit crunch.

The simple truth is that there is no cast-iron reason why the next upward trend of the economic cycles has to include Britain. Nations have managed to sit-out boom times before - indeed, France and Germany seemed to manage it quite well last time round - and without the right choices being made, this could be Britain' turn. Contrary to some expectations, there is no sign that the late 90s-early 00s boom will prove to be the last hurrah of globalisation. Rather it was the catalyst for the next stage of the globalising of the world economy: the breaking of US economic hegemony and the growth in the power of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Behind the dust cloud created by slowing or non-existent growth in the old economic powers of the US and Europe, these emerging powers appear to be largely weathering the storm - the IMF is, for example, continuing to predict 10% growth in the Chinese economy in 2008-09.

This means that when the older economies emerge from the slow-down, as they eventually will, they will have a lot of catch-up to play. This will be particularly hard to achieve given that some of the causes and symptoms of this recession, particularly high energy prices, are here to stay. But the countries that will find it hardest are those that have decided that the slow-down is a good opportunity to take an investment holiday - and there is a risk that Britain could be amongst them. Last week, Nick Clegg said that

We have got a recession looming. At a time when British families are tightening their belts, government should tighten its belt too.

It's an apparently cast-iron piece of logic, but the reality of cuts in public spending at this time have the potential for catastrophe. In the short-term, a recession is in fact likely to lead to a need for higher public spending - more unemployment benefit payments, increased employment schemes, support for those in danger of repossession and for those struggling with energy bills. So, any immediate spending cut will simply hit the poorest hardest: spending on 'soft' areas without defined outcomes, such as most of that involving those in poverty is always the easiest to cut.

But it is the long-term effects of a serious reining-in of public spending that could be most damaging if it leads to delays and curtailments in efforts to improve the UK's skills base and renew its physical infrastructure. We have been here before: the severe crisis of under-investment in public services and national infrastructure which Labour faced on entering office in 1997 was due to spending cut-backs in previous recessions. Labour's attempts to reverse these short-falls have been aided by the decade-long boom which has permitted the long-term and stable investment needed, although the results have not always been as impressive as they should have been, at least in part due to an obsession with PFIs and PPPs.

But with much of the investment slowly beginning to bear fruit, now is not the time to reverse the process and return to short-termism. Rather, the government should be looking at those areas where an economic slow-down is advantageous to investment: namely, investment in physical infrastructure.

During the boom years, many vital infrastructure schemes have been put in jeopardy by two symptoms of apparent economic success: high land prices and a squeezed labour force. Only recently, it was being predicted that a glut of major construction projects, such as the Olympics and Crossrail, would mean that there was simply not enough of a workforce to go round for other schemes. Now, with lay-offs occurring with increasing regularity in many parts of the construction sector, that situation is eased. Government-funded construction projects would ease the pain being felt in those sectors.

So what sort of programmes should the government be ramping up its investment in? Housing would be a good start, especially as it is becoming increasingly apparent that the fall in prices will not solve the severe housing crisis that Britain continues to face. As a first step, alongside investment in large-scale affordable housing schemes, the fall in house prices should be met by freeing up local authorities to purchase repossessed and vacant houses to kick-start a new generation of council housing. In many cases this could work out cheaper than the refurbishment to Decent Homes standards of unsuitable and near-derelict 1960s and 70s housing stock. A society where every family is well housed would be a more than acceptable legacy for an economic downturn.

Beyond housing, the availability of labour and lower land values provide opportunities for a range of projects that would be beneficial for future sustainable growth. These could include renewable energy generating capacity, an increase in capacity on the rail network and a ramping up of school and hospital construction programmes.

The key to Britain surviving not just this downturn but the highly competitive boom that is likely to follow will be stepping up the nation's infrastructure to a standard comparable to that which the BRIC nations will be offering by the end of the decade. Missing this opportunity to achieve parity at an affordable and attainable economic period has the potential to condemn the UK to a continued cycle of relative global economic decline, rather than the highly-skilled and equitable society necessary for a successful 21st century European economy. There are very few instances of a British government seeking to cut its way out of a recession succeeding in the long term. It will almost certainly not succeed in this instance.

PS: Anyone who enjoys engaging in back-of-the-envelope calculations on public spending could do worse than having a look at this chart in today's Guardian.
