There hasn't been any satire on her for a while, for which I apologise. But the ongoing political story is obviously Peters and I just find it hard to come up with material that is more absurd than the stuff that's actually happening.

Exhibit A: the Glenn testimony, in which Labour MP's on the Privileges committee responded to Glenn's substantial evidence that he had spoken to Peters with the suggestion that he only thought he had spoken to Winston Peters, and probably someone had stolen Winston's cell-phone and impersonated him. How the fuck am I supposed to compete with that?

So instead of writing about something else I'm resorting to the laziest kind of blogging there is: linking to a music video on YouTube. It's a good 'un though: David Bowie's 'Heroes'. From his Berlin period, co-written with Brian Eno and inspired by the sight of two lovers embracing in the shadow of the Berlin wall: talk about a relic from another age.

Bonus question: name one contemporary pop-star who could pull this video off:

You’ve probably all read or heard of the legendary city of Atlantis. Yep, yep, you know, the o

You've probably all read or heard of the legendary city of Atlantis. Yep, yep, you know, the one about the city that like, drowned itself or something? What? That's not what happened? Ok, ok, Fine. Maybe they didn't drown themselves. Whatever, they've fallen (into the sea), and they can't get up... Heh... I slay me... :)

Ok, ok, I'm sorry. It's just that the Atlanteans are considered a joke race among us Balrogs. Seriously, what kind of dumb race destroys themselves? Oh, wait... you all are humans right... Never mind, don't answer that... Anyhoo, legend has it that the Atlanteans were almost as powerful as we (the Maiar, of course) were...

(Yeah, I said "almost". They're all sleeping with the fishes now, so let's see you prove me wrong :P ) At least until their rather unfortunate accident that ended in a race wide dirt water nap...

But they supposedly had some cool weapons. Perhaps nothing as cool as the stuff us fire demons cook up, but interesting nonetheless. And I think I've found one:

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="432" caption="Ocean (Atlantean) Bowie"][/caption]

OK, so the site I found it on calls it an Ocean Bowie. But I'm sure we all know the truth. It's just a poorly disguised Atlantean bowie. I suppose they were trying to be sensitive to the unfortunate plight of the Atlanteans, but as one of the first races to win a civilization-wide Darwin award, I wouldn't have bothered. *cough*...

Anyway, it's certainly an interesting blade. A single piece, full tang construction, with sea blue patterned wood scales strategically pinned on a retro futuristic profile. The blade itself is actually not bad. A couple of unnecessary cutouts and perforations on the spine and the blade, but meh.

Beneath the blade and what I'm going to call the ricasso, is an interesting blade extension, that looks a lot like a fin. From a sailfish perhaps... Except without the spines... In fact, as you would expect from an ocean themed blade there many oceanic motifs at work. The hilt is rather interesting, with integrated choils for added grip, as well as an undulating finger guard, looking like another set of fins, extending down the front three quarters of the grip.

I thought the use of the extra circular and triangular scales above the grip, and along the ricasso, added a somewhat more mechanical feel to the fishy theme. Rather unusual but certainly a good representation of what the Atlantean culture was said to be.

All in all, certainly a decent blade. Can't really fault the Atlantean designers all that much on it. Perhaps a little too flashy for my taste, too much extraneous furniture, gills and fins and whatnot. But what would you expect from a race that drowned it it's own bathtub? :P

LOL... I kid... I kid...

Maybe... :)

Off to read Bedlam Farm. A fine way to close out the evening.

I've been experiencing various levels of seasickness now for days. The morning after my previous blog post, we awoke to torrential rain, winds and massive sea swells - which are only now beginning to subside. I've experienced terrible storms on land, but this is something else altogether... I'd have been worried if the crew hadn't taken it so nonchalantly in their stride.

The first of the rough weather was actually kind of exciting for us all. Edith and RJ found playfighting with the whole cabin rising and falling totally hillarious. It also provided a perfect opportunity for me to introduce them to one of my Grandfather's favourite pieces of doggrel:

The night was dark and story, and the waves crashed over the ship. The captain said to the cabin boy, "Antonio, tell me a story!" - and the story began like this: The night was dark and stormy, and the waves crashed over the ship. The Captain said to the cabin boy, "Antonio, tell me a story!" - and the story began like this: The night was dark and stormy...

The novelty wore off pretty quick, both for the cabin boy's story and the weather. I think it was after the third day of nausea that I made a pact with myself: If air travel doesn't become readily affordable again, I am never leaving New Zealand. Of course, if we've only got twenty-three years left to pull ourselves from the brink of extinction, the whole idea of unforced travel seems a bit extravagant.

Speaking of pacts, there's actually been an unspoken one amongst those of us on the ship. Ever since the day the news broke about the GEAS report, it's been hardly mentioned by any of us. As if maybe the whole thing was another of those fusions of theater, disinformation and synchronized hacking - that we'll get back to land to discover it was all a mistake. Truth be told, I've been using my volitile stomach as a bit of an excuse to put off discussing it with both June and the kids.

Trouble is, no matter how much I want it to go away, I'm starting to see signs of it everywhere. When I turned to my e-book reader to take my mind of the nausea, I remembered I was in the middle of Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle (looks like the Ice-Nine wasn't necessary after all, Kurt). Listening to my self-recorded bootleg of Bowie's latest tour, I was absolutely floored by the sincerity of the rendition of Five Years. He's always been ahead of the rest of us - I can't help wondering if somehow the bastard already knew.

So here I am again, almost exactly a week later and my thoughts are no more in order than before. Except for one thing - I've just been reading an email from an old friend in San Francisco. Apparently they're working on some project, "a positive response to the GEAS results". It's not up and running yet, but they're needing help coordinating the community once it is. I'm starting to feel like ANY kind of response would be better than what I've currently been offering, and a positive one would be a million times so.

I guess we'll see what comes of it.

STAINES HOBGOBLIN

Raise your hands for Purge Noise
“Heavy Roc

STAINES HOBGOBLIN
Thursday 18th September 2008

Raise your hands for Purge Noise

"Heavy Rock mob from West London..."

The Purge noise is bass heavy with song structures that deftly incorporate low-to-mid tempos (with some well crafted tempo changes)- reminiscent of something from the Welsh stoner metal band ‘Acrimony’ (and so,in turn, their music also doffs a
respectful cap towards Black Sabbath especially Sabbath 4 era.)

But the Purge sounds faster and more energetic than those stoner rock influenced blues- you get the feeling that these guys get up before 3pm and don’t “need some space to, like, trip- man” because they all do proper jobs, live in proper brick-built homes and they probably go to the gym and drink pro-biotic yoghurts too.

But the band also has a rap metalcore edge (with its corporate roots in the sounds of ‘The Clash’ and its corporate head firmly ‘up there’ in the sounds of ‘Rage Against the Machine’) with a singer who not-quite yells a bunch of slogans but, to be more accurate, entices and invigorates the listener with a bunch of slogans. But there are definitely some blues-rock influences in there too and most people recognise some hefty chunks of ‘Led Zep’ in the Purge-Noise.

Supreme long-haired guitarist Kinghorn Mills is the powerhouse of the outfit and he takes your breath away with such ferocity and energising spirit. Distortion and atonality being the norm his guitar-work is, however, airbrushed against a backdrop of ‘proper’ riff based blues rock. But don’t overlook the bass player Stanley whose technically inspired bassline structures provide the architectural backbone for all the purge numbers.

Some of the lyrics are as ripe as a 10-day old Camembert oozing with fluid nuances, never unpleasant or excessive, but raw, acidic and often bitter enough to raise awareness and knock some kinda sense into you. There is a resonance and depth in these songs and the sound is like ripped fuel lines dragging in the gravel behind a runaway truck. I noticed a definite Bowie-esque sound to some of the vocals circa Suffragette City. Give ‘Dirty Dog’ a listen and you will hear what I mean.

Purge play all-out rock with the clutch disengaged, but with the type of clutch that allows you to adjust your senses and take away with you the tools of change. Full of gravel, gravitas and a sense of rock jamais vou. Purge deliver a knockout out shot of dopamine motivating and rewarding the listener, instantaneously, with increased heart rate, itchy feet and shattered ear-drums.

Morrison and Quitely have accomplished something that many comics creators and fans thought impossible: they've found a way to tell stories about Superman that feel fresh and energetic after seventy years of the neverending battle. Yes, they amplify the menaces, but that's just the window-dressing.... The physical challenges are never a problem for the man of tomorrow.... The emotional challenges--to atone with his fathers, to be with the woman he loves, to confront his own mortality, to inspire our compassion and courage and hope--those are the tough battles, those are what really matter, and Morrison knows it. His real coup is not just making Superman interesting again, but showing us why it matters that we still come up with new stories about him. Because even if he were perfect, we can always be better.

Don't get me wrong... I love most of his stuff. But this is that sort of music that defines Cave as "cool", rather than your run-o'-the-mill talented musician. Cave has stated that this album is similar in sound to his side project Griderman; a more "garage rock"-type sound.

The music on this album tends to have a repetitive feel with lots of noise happening and a driving, cool beat. It also has an epic feel to it, thanks to the use of instruments such as the organ. It seems most similar in musical style to Let Love In. Vocally, Cave takes on a sneering, Bowie-like quality.

Like pretty much all of Cave's music, the lyrics are fantastic and a welcome departure from the flaccidity of much Western contemporary lyrics. In the great importance of lyrics to the overall feel of its songs, Dig Lazarus Dig!!! is similar to the Bad Seeds' previous studio (double) album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus, in which Cave's inventive lyrics could conceivably function as stand-alone poetry.

However, in my opinion, Dig Lazarus Dig!!! takes a step further. Its as if Cave has written a book and decided to read it along with some musical backing- often putting way more syllables in a line than we are used to with Western music. This has a similar feel to the operatic tradition of recitative: a focus on lyrics, with a sparse basso continuo accompaniment, to tell a story in between the arias. This makes the choruses even more effective, such as in We Call Upon The Author, where the recurring and driving chorus is especially dramatic compared to Cave's recitative.

A very cool album that was well worth downloading again when the first copy was a dud. 4 stars.

Sept. 13 was good luck to some anglers, as Governor Martin O’Malley presented them with prizes valued at more than $50,000 at the 2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge finale. More than 1,100 enthusiastic anglers and their families attended the contest’s fourth annual closing event held on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point State Park.

“Maryland anglers make a tremendous contribution to our state’s economy and play a significant role in the stewardship of our waterways and our aquatic life,” said Governor O’Malley. “The increased participation by children in this year’s contest brings hope not only to the future of this beloved pastime, but to the future of our natural resources.”

New life was brought to this year’s contest, as participation increased from last year’s 224 qualifying entrants to 1,345 anglers from 24 U.S. states, Canada, and Brazil this year. New this year, a youth challenge qualified children, who participated in five community fishing derbies held across the state, to win unique guided fishing trips.

Walking away with the two grand prizes selected by random drawing were Fred Menage of Edgewater, Md. and Edir Sauerbronn Dos Santos of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Menage’s catch of a 40.25-inch striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay just below the Thomas Point Lighthouse won him a 2008 Toyota TUNDRA from Central Maryland Toyota. Menage, aged 69, weighed his fish in at 24 lbs. at Marty’s Tackle in Mayo. Md.

“It was beautiful and delicious,” said Menage, describing his catch. “I’ve been fishing my whole life and this one turned out to be my lucky fish. It’s unbelievable and so very exciting that I won this Toyota truck. It will be the first truck I’ve ever owned.”

Dos Santos’ first catch ever in the Chesapeake Bay, a 42-inch striped bass caught aboard the Beach Comber out of Chesapeake Beach, Md. landed him a TRACKER boat, trailer and motor package from Bass Pro Shops. Dos Santos was represented by his son-in-law Eric Hoffman of Dundalk, Md. today, who was also aboard for the lucky catch.

“Fishing is a great family activity that enables us all to get out on the water for some good, safe fun,” said Hoffman. “Each of us caught great sized fish that day during our families’ fishing trip aboard a local charterboat. We are looking forward to going out more on this gorgeous new boat.”

Additional finalists, Hunter Betz, an 11-year old angler from York, Pa., Mike Currie of Leonardtown, Md. and James Harrison of Annapolis, Md. won Bill’s Outdoor Center prize packages worth $1,500 each, and a $2,500 Boater’s World gift card, respectively.
“We hope our annual fishing challenge gave first time and experienced anglers an incentive to take advantage of Maryland’s great fishing opportunities, and particularly to share their passion for the sport with the next generation,” said DNR Deputy Secretary Eric Schwaab.

Organized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the 2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge ran from Saturday, April 12 through Labor Day, September 1. While the contest offered a potential cash prize of up to $25,000 from Boater’s World and a $5,000 diamond from Smyth Jewelers for the capture the Diamond Jim, the bay’s most famous fish eluded anglers again this year. All prizes for the Challenge were donated.

More than 60 species of fish were citation-eligible, including large and smallmouth bass, trout, walleye, musky and pan fish in the freshwaters of Maryland; rockfish (striped bass), bluefish, drum, sea trout and perch in the Chesapeake Bay; and tuna, marlin, flounder, kingfish and sea bass on the ocean-side.

“We are also very luck to have our Governor, Martin O’Malley, who from day one, rolled up his sleeves and went to work for Maryland’s fishermen and our environment, particularly the Chesapeake Bay,” added Schwaab. “It is thanks to his commitment to our children and our environment that we are rebuilding our beleaguered Chesapeake Bay blue crab population, charting a new, sustainable course for fisheries management, and strategically targeting our conservation dollars to get the maximum attainable results for taxpayers.”

Governor O’Malley continues to make conserving and restoring our natural resources a priority though a more balanced budget that includes an additional $25 million in funding for Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts; fully funding Program Open Space; an additional $750,000 to improve fisheries management and restore habitat; an enhancement of more than $4 million to ensure sustainable management and quality outdoor recreational opportunities in our state parks; and $3 million for new Chesapeake Bay oyster and habitat restoration projects.

When I finished my roast beast beef sandwich, I had a small piece of roast beef left lying on the wrapper. My first reflex was to grab it and split it between Spike and Bowie. For just the briefest moment I was sad, and I deeply missed my kitties.
