According to this article, the new trend in weddings is asking your bridesmaids to get botox and boob jobs.

Geez, could you image being a bridesmaid in several weddings and all the brides wanting you to do something different? Also, way to feed the beast about bridesmaids not being "good enough" as women...espcially once they start to become bridesmaids at 30+.

I can say right now I will not be asking my sisters to do such a thing... hell, I'm not even asking them to wear any particular item of clothing. Sweet and Simple... be yourself.

A few weeks ago, I was in a bridal party, an absolutely charming and delightful bridal party. The bride never came close to being a Bridezilla and only made a few requests regarding her bridesmaids' appearances for The Day.

Before this wedding, I had been in one other bridal party, another Bridezilla-free affair. When looking down the road towards other weddings I could be involved with at one level or another, they also seem to be monster-free, because, well, none of my friends are obsessive about various shades of ecru.

It seems to me, however, that while there are still Bridezillas in the world, there is an even scarier trend in Bridal Land--princesses.

Maybe it's because I watch too much Style or We, but more and more brides seem to becoming princesses. When I write princesses, I mean having big, extravagant affairs, with every detail in perfect harmony done to full excess. While these weddings are pretty to look at, I can't help but think, it's only one day, with loads of money invested, but what about the love involved, is that invested? Women will go too extreme measures to have the most romantic, heavenly day of their lives, but will they put the same effort into their marriages?

Brides as princesses have hit a new level, as noted in The New York Times yesterday--Botox for Bridesmaids! I can't think of a single of friend of mine who would say, darling, I love you, but I love my wedding more, it's Botox for you.

Whatever happened to having your nails done, a lunch, maybe some champagne? Somewhat understandably, the women profiled in The Times piece were older brides, but even so, with beauty procedures being incredibly expensive and time-consuming, how could you even bring yourself to request your bridesmaids to have breast enhancement, liposuction, or all be the same color (this article is fantastic, it's a real "I'm sane, you're not," pick-me-up.") Ms. Abby Ellin writes that "for every accommodating pal, there’s another who feels going under the knife is beyond the duty of bridesmaid."

Beyond the duty? Asking your bridesmaids to have breast enhancement is more than a duty, it's grounds to end the friendship. Unless the bride is like the one featured below, and you want them to hang around just to see what crazy stuff they spew out next.

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and this woman passed by, and my friend said, "if I had her body I would do something about the face". This woman has a great body and hair, and you can see that she is in her late forties, early fifties; but you can only see it in her face.

In this era of cult to youth, is it possible to age 'gracefully'?

Do we have to go under the knife to appear younger than what we really are?

Get the boobs, the botox, the lifts, and die looking like a wax version of ourselves?

I am all for taking care of yourself and looking good, but how far is too far?

We see the Hollywood "role models" making themselves look like caricatures of themselves is that what we want?

I think we should learn to love ourselves, and every stage of life has its good parts, why not embrace them. That is just me...

At the London Day Cosmetic Surgery Centre we can offer consultations for a wide range of wide range

At the London Day Cosmetic Surgery Centre we can offer consultations for a wide range of wide range of improving treatments which can have a profound affect by changing the way a person looks and perceives themselves. Discreet facial aesthetic surgery, body contouring, liposculpture, Breast Cosmetic Surgery, facial aesthetic surgery and anti-ageing procedures can be conducted, as can reconstructive procedures made necessary by cancer, congenital deformities, trauma and injury.

Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Reduction

Ageing of the upper and lower eyelids is normally due to a combination of loose skin and protrusion of fat. This is a common problem and although most patients seeking such surgery are 40 or older, puffy eyes may be a familial trait and patients will seek help at a much younger age. In the upper eyelids ageing causes stretching of the eyelid skin producing a “hooded” Appearance. These changes can give the appearance of tiredness and many patients request Cosmetic Surgery for this reason.

The Tooth and its Surrounding Tissues

Teeth are not solid objects; they have a space at their centre containing blood vessels and nerves called the dental pulp. This pulp tissue nourishes the tooth.

What are Dental Implants ?

Dental Implants are small, tissue-compatible titanium fixtures, which are inserted into the jawbone. After a period of natural bonding, the implants serve as the 'root' anchor for new superstructure crowns bridges or dentures.

Aetiology

The major cause of gingivitis is the accumulation of bacteria at the gum line in the form of a sticky, yellowish film which is called dental plaque.

We've discussed plastic surgery a little here at SWTCTW. As I mentioned in this post,I think plastic surgery trends are getting a leetle nuts these days, and my thoughts and fears were confirmed by one of today's New York Times articles. In "It's Botox For You, Dear Bridesmaids," Abby Ellin talks about the latest fad in plastic surgery: brides encouraging and/or paying for their bridesmaids to get everything from Botox to boob jobs.

To begin with, I'm the kind of girl who thinks that over-the-top weddings are unnecessary. I know that many women want their wedding to be the best day ever and are happy to spend bajillions of Daddy's dollars on the perfect ceremony, but I just don't see the point. Give me an "I do", a cake, and a party with an open bar, and I'll be happy. But all those things aside, plastic surgery for bridesmaids strikes me as out-of-this-world absurd. In the article, the brides who want to Botox their BFFs seem to want to do it as a gift. As 35-year-old bride-to-be Kasey Knauer explains:

"Giving them a bracelet isn’t as special as spending an evening together. Plus, as you get older, everyone is more conscientious about their skin and appearance,” she said. “Giving them something for themselves — as opposed to something that they’ll never wear again — is more meaningful.”

And I guess if her bridesmaids are the kind of people who would want Botox anyway, that is a pretty nice gift. Still, the whole thing strikes me as a little Stepford wife-y. As in, "My bridesmaids will wear perfect matching dresses, they will be skinny, and they will NOT be wrinkled. Smile, girls!."

Other brides are encouraging their bridesmaids to get their teeth whitened or go tanning before the wedding so that they all look more or less the same. One bride took things a little far:

...two women were claustrophobic and couldn’t bear standing in a tanning capsule. “They asked the bride if they could use regular tanning cream from a salon,” Ms. Goldberg said. The bride refused; she wanted everyone to be the same shade. The women ultimately declined to be bridesmaids. “Friendships of 20-plus years gone over a spray tan?” Ms. Goldberg said. “Sad!”

By that logic, I'd have to make my token Asian friend work the guest book. Sorry, Walsher.

Even more disturbing than the Botox and the tanning, some brides are requesting that their bridesmaids get breast implants:

Becky Lee, 39, a Manhattan photographer, declined when a friend asked her — and five other attendants — to have their breasts enhanced. “We’re all Asian and didn’t have a whole lot of cleavage, and she found a doctor in L.A. who was willing to do four for the price of two,” said Ms. Lee, who wore a push-up bra instead.

Call me old-fashioned, but if a friend asked me to get a boob job for her wedding, I think I'd be insulted. Getting me into an unflattering dress would be hard enough, but getting me to go under the knife? Ha! What happened to mani/pedis and lunch with the girls?

On respire tranquillement.

Alors l'eau allait me faire du bien.

Sarah Haskins recently put together a sardonic commentary on the inundation of wedding themed reality programming available on the WE channel. Not only do weddings seem to bring out the absolute worst in brides, but the occasion allows for targeted marketing to women who always seem to want to lose at least 10 pounds before the wedding.

And now, according to the NYTimes, bridal parties are no longer just sharing in manicures and beefcake strippers, they're turning to cosmetic procedures at the behest of the bride-to-be.

Marie Scalogna-Watkinson, the founder of Spa Chicks on-the-Go, a mobile spa, said she receives five to seven calls a month from brides seeking Botox or Restylane for their bridesmaids. Five years ago, collective makeovers were unheard of, she said.

It's old news that some brides are actually resorting to contractual agreements with bride's maids to control as much of their day as possible -- including the bridal party's weight, up do's and behavior at the ceremony and reception. a recent advice column responded to a woman asking for advice on how to exclude a close somebody from the bridal party because she's fat and would "ruin" the wedding photos. The advice columnist did not have many kind words for the bride.

The focus on aesthetics has compounded itself with women asking their best friends to undergo body modifications of some sort.

Samantha Goldberg, a wedding planner in Chester, N.J., recalled a bride who asked her attendants to get professionally spray-tanned for a Hawaiian-theme reception. Alas, two women were claustrophobic and couldn’t bear standing in a tanning capsule. “They asked the bride if they could use regular tanning cream from a salon,” Ms. Goldberg said. The bride refused; she wanted everyone to be the same shade. The women ultimately declined to be bridesmaids. “Friendships of 20-plus years gone over a spray tan?” (NYT)

Trying to ensure a perfect day seems more likely to ruffles feathers and damage relationships. Is it really more important that wedding photos, rather than life long friendships, last a life time? Isn't having one's closest friends share your big day, regardless of their shape, size, or weight, the best gift of all? It seems that photoshopping photos would be a lot easy than making the wedding day an ordeal for anyone participating.

Fortunately, some women are putting their pale peach stilettos down when Bridezilla goes too far.

Lee, who wore a push-up bra instead . . .

These days, it seems like those of us not drinking the Wedding Kool-Aid are few and far between.

BOTOX smoothes and softens wrink

For more information please visit http://www.viridianmedical.co.uk/

BOTOX smoothes and softens wrinkles by weakening the underlying muscle. Viridian Medical only uses BOTOX® from Allergan, who were the first company to have a license for it’s use in the UK. BOTOX has been used worldwide in more extensive cosmetic and medical situations for over 20 years eg. For eye squints, muscle spasticity, wry necks, and in the treatment of migraines.

Cosmetically it is very effective for the upper face, and is most successful if used before the wrinkle or frown becomes etched on the face. After treatment the face wrinkles are softened considerably or disappear altogether.

BOTOX® is excellent for:
Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows - the most commonly requested area;
Horizontal frown lines on the forehead
‘Crows feet’ around the eyes.

BOTOX® is also very effective in men, but more toxin is used as the muscle as are stronger and bulkier in most men.

Treatment

Prior to treatment the patient will always have proper consultation, lasting approximately 20 minutes. This is so that the patient is made aware of possible side effects and the small risk of complications. Any risks are however rare and temporary. Photography is also highly desirable and is kept as a record and forms part of the consultation period.

Performing the procedures is fairly quick, and lasts about ten minutes. BOTOX® is used in tiny doses and is injected into the muscles of the face. The areas to be treated are marked out first, and ice is applied before the injection. Careful preparation avoids the client being left with a surprised look, or pointed eyebrows (Spock eye brows) At Viridian Medical we are aware that the frozen look, overuse of Botox, asymetric or peculiar looking brows are the give away sign of “having been Botoxed” and our techniques are refined to avoiding this from occurring.

The results of BOTOX are NOT instant. They can take 4 to 10 days to take effect and depend on the individual.

After Care

The procedure is usually fairly painless as the needles are such a fine gauge. There is a tiny red marking which fades within an hour and is barely noticeable. At each session, the forehead can be injected up to ten times, between the brows up to six times, and around the eyes three to four times each side. The number of injections depends on the extent of the problem and how smooth the desired effect.

Awareness of aftercare is important; avoiding alcohol immediately afterwards. To ensure this, the patient is supplied with a separate aftercare information sheet.

It is recommended that in the first year 3-4 treatments are applied to each area and then top-ups of 1-2 times per year as the muscles treated become less strong.

It is sometimes necessary to perform a small top up at 2 weeks to treat any areas that haven’t responded to the treatment. It is important to understand this is NOT an exact science, I make an estimate of how much toxin to use in each area on my perception of the strength of the frown.

Any remaining lines that are etched into the skin can be treated with a Restylane filler product.

Also very effective in men, but more toxin is used as the muscle as are stronger and bulkier in most men. No local anaesthetic is required.

If you do not make any changes; then you will lose out in clients and profits to the better marketer. Even though you might be the very best Med Spa or Doctor in your Area but if nobody knows then you can and will not be growing fast. With that being said tell me what you think is good and bad from this ad.

Taking the guesswork out of mammary makeovers

(by TaRessa Stovall - July 17, 2008)

Which type of breast would be best?

Pamela Anderson or Jennifer Anniston?

Saline or silicone gel?

New technology in a Montclair plastic surgeon’s office makes it possible for many women to get a sneak peak at the possibilities available through aesthetic or reconstructive breast surgery.

The Vectra 3 D is a Star Trek-looking device that eliminates the need to look at before-and-after photos of other people, taking the guesswork out of what breasts would look like after surgery. It utilizes three cameras and a grid to calibrate images from different angles.

What the patient sees is her own body, from the neck to the hips, on a blue background. Working with the surgeon, it is possible to see what different options would look like in their finished state.

"When women are having breast surgery, whether for augmentation or because of surgery when they’ve lost their breasts to cancer, it is very difficult to explain in words what they’re going to look like. Plus, there are many different choices of implants," said Dr. Barry DiBernardo, who heads New Jersey Plastic Surgery, 29 Park St.

"You have to size the implant to the person but within that, there is a range of acceptable sizes," DiBernardo explained, as he held up differing sizes of both saline and silicone gel implants. In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of silicone gel-filled breast implants after a 14-year government ban based on health and safety concerns that included autoimmune disorders and increased rates of cancer.

"In the olden days, a woman had to put on a bra, and then they’d put different sizes of implants underneath, then put their shirt on and see what looked right to them," DiBernardo said.

"It gives you a close idea, but there are inherent inaccuracies in doing it that way. You really don’t get to see what you yourself look like on your own body."

The Vectra breast sculptor enables DiBernado and his patients to preview both saline and gel options projected onto their bodies.

"It is a very, very accurate measurement tool. I can calculate volume very accurately, because I’m seeing it in three planes," DiBernardo said.

seeing ‘the synergy’

The Vectra 3 D is a camera system, a technical solution that takes multiple pictures of the subject and then uses those pictures to build a very accurate, three-dimensional model of the person, said Rollin Read, product manager at Canfield Scientific in Fairfield, which manufactures the machine.

"Vectra is a platform of three-dimensional solutions that range from 360-degree body imaging – all the way around , shoulders to toes – that is used primarily by people who do body contouring-type stuff, body sculpting and post bariatric surgery."

This enables both doctor and patient to see the comparisons between body parts and how they relate in proportion to each other.

Read explained that the camera system used by Dr. DiBernardo was designed to show shoulders to hips for breast patients, "because there is a relationship all the way through there. When you look at yourself, you don’t just see your breast or your shoulders, you see this whole figure and how they all tie together, what the synergy is there."

DiBernardo, who works as a research consultant to Canfield Scientific, has had the Vectra 3 D for about three months, and has used it on about 12 to 15 patients, he said. While most women come for aesthetic surgery, he works with cancer survivors on breast reconstruction as well.

Read said that DiBernardo is one of the first doctors to use the 3 D technology in his practice. The machine is also being used in Stockhlm, Sweden; El Paso, Texas; Tokyo, Japan, Ohio and the United Kingdom.

The greatest benefit of the technology? "It provides very specific and targeted measurements that are used for surgical planning. It just takes some of that unpleasantness and awkwardness out of the consult, makes it very targeted, efficient and accurate.

"At the end of the day, if the surgeon understands what the patient wants, they can then better deliver what the patient wants," Read said.

growing trend

What patients seem to increasingly want is improvement through cosmetic surgery. Since 1997, there has been a 114 percent increase in cosmetic surgical procedures of all kinds for men and women, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

In a consumer attitudes survey this year, ASAPS reports that 56 percent of American and 57 percent of American men say they approve of cosmetic surgery.

Women had nearly 10.6 million cosmetic procedures (surgical and non-surgical), for 90 percent of the total. The top five surgical procedures for women were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty and breast reduction. Most were in patients age 35 to 50. And the total spent by Americans on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures was estimated by ASAPS to be just under $13.2 billion, with the national average for breast augmentation with silicone gel $4,087 and $3,690 for saline implants.

Some 54 percent of these surgeries are performed in an office facility, such as DiBernardo’s in Montclair.

While he works with breast reconstruction patients, DiBernardo said the majority of women seeking breast surgery want augmentation and/or lifts.

As the story, "Buoyed by bigger breasts," from a 2006 story in USA Today reports, "Once the domain of strippers and starlets, breast augmentation appears to be catching on with increasing numbers of soccer moms."

Angela P., 24, of Newark, has high hopes for her upcoming breast lift and augmentation from DiBernardo. "I feel like, when I have a really nice dress on, I don’t really fill it out as I would like to. I would love to wear a dress without having to wear those padded bras," Angela said.

The technology shows women what their breasts can or will look like from a variety of angles, from the front, both sides and even the view from looking down onto her own breasts.

According to DiBernardo’s Web site, newjerseyplasticsurgery.com, "3 D breast imaging also allows you to see what your breasts may look like in a year after surgery, so you have a long-term view of what your body may look like."

The program can also superimpose the pre and post-operation images, or show them side-by-side.

"Canfield [Scientific] took hundreds of pictures of real patients, so these are very true to life," DiBernardo said.

Studying her image on the Vectra 3 D, Angela said "I think all plastic surgeons should have that so that all patients would know what they’ll look like when they’re going into surgery, and not be so surprised."

Cosmetic medicine - the background

Over the last 10 years an exciting new field known as cosmetic medicine is emerging within mainstream Medicine. Its practice allows various facial and body improvements to be made without resorting to Surgery. The approach to plastic surgery has changed in the last decade because of the effectiveness of many of the new treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, Sculptra, various forms of lasers and radiofrequency machines. Many of the cosmetic treatments have their roots in mainstream medicine, of which Botox is the prime example. Botox had been widely used for muscle spasm, squints, and facial palsy before being discovered as a very useful wrinkle relaxant. Also greater understanding of the anatomy of the ageing face exists now and our knowledge continues to expand.

E.g. under the skin and above the muscle of the face are separate fat pads and we now have more knowledge when these pads begin to lose volume and in which order. Now with this new knowledge we can better advise on restoring volume to the face with a blend of procedures which can create striking but subtle and natural looking changes.

Cosmetic medicine is about the application of medical knowledge, science and using technology whilst appreciating the principles of aesthetics and what makes the face look fresher and younger. Many of us are passionate about our work, which is easy when the results can be rewarding for the client and the doctor. Knowing the spectrum of what treatments exist as well as understanding which is best suited to your needs is key to a successful and pleasing outcome.

The Consultation - an impartial approach in your best interest

The consultation is the foundation to getting the best results for you. Firstly, the doctor needs to understand your concerns and your medical history. Secondly, you need to understand what can be realistically achieved and how it can be achieved, and which treatments are needed. Thirdly, the doctor needs to advise if they feel a different area of focus is needed e.g. skin care rather than a particular wrinkle. The aim is to give you a natural look that makes you look good for your age, rather than obviously striving to turn the clock back, which can result in a “done” unnatural appearance. This means both have to work together to establish a plan of action. There needs to be mutual trust.

The BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) do not recommend free consultations and this is wise council. You are paying a professional for their time and professional opinion and you would not expect that to be for free, thus an impartial approach in your best interest is achieved.

Aesthetic Regulation in the UK

In the UK, cosmetic medicine, or non-surgical cosmetics or aesthetics is largely unregulated. Nearly anyone with a nursing background (or even now beauty therapist or dental hygienist) can set up a clinic, with very little experience. Incidentally “a clinic” does not have to be owned or run by a medically trained person. There are no nationally recognised courses and many people can set up a course to teach others. (See British Association of Cosmetic Doctors - BACD). Of course, there are well known and very reputable people teaching doctors, dentists and some nurses and providing a good service but it is difficult for the public to gauge the level of expertise of any individual.

The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors is striving and succeeding to address this issue of regulation, but currently there is no serious government legislation to protect the public. BACD is certainly setting standard for its members through examination, validations and a high quality teaching programme, but not all cosmetic doctors belong to BACD and neither legally do they have to. Shortly for BACD doctors there will be a high level diploma for doctors only. Both BACD and BAAPS want better regulation, to regulate aesthetics practitioners and protect the public, but this may not be forthcoming through proper legislation. In Europe and the USA there are much stricter controls of who can do these procedures.

• Always investigate the background and training of the person you are considering having your treatment with.

• Do they inspire your confidence with their ability and knowledge? It’s your face and body!

• Look at the premises, are they fit for purpose?

• Can they help you if you develop a complication or are unhappy with the results?

It is strongly recommended you do not have any injectable treatment with a beauty therapist (even if they are insured) as they are unlikely to be in a position to help if there is a complication. However there is no UK legislation to stop them from doing so.

Viridian Medical and background of Dr Bea Brookes MBBS FRCS (England) FCEM

Viridian Medical was established to deliver high quality cosmetic medical services and is run by Dr Bea Brookes MBBS FRCS FCEM, a member of BACD and registered with the GMC. We can provide a spectrum of procedures for both the face and body and have a network of other professional and specific clinics for treatment areas we do not cover e.g. Pixel for facial rejuvenation.

Dr Bea Brookes graduated from Kings College Hospital London University in 1987 and followed a career in general surgery in the SE of England. She studied plastic and reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead as a junior surgeon. This is hallowed ground and the birth place of plastics surgery in the world (Sir Archibald McIndoe and the guinea pig pilots of WW2) and this gave her an excellent grounding in surgical techniques, patient assessment, and approach to cosmetic work. Dr Brookes became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1992.

Since then she has used her surgical experience and hospital experience as a Consultant in Accident and Emergency (A&E) in Surrey, where she has worked for over 10 years. Dr Brookes was the “Lead Clinician” there for 7 years and has been awarded two clinical excellence awards for her contribution to developing the service.

As her hospital work is practical and challenging, a lot of procedures with those skills are brought into cosmetic medicine. Dr Brookes has a mature approach and enjoys taking the time to establish your concerns and expectations. She is not a “Consultant in Cosmetic medicine” as this does not yet exist in the UK, but she has a very experienced background. Dr Brookes is also a full member of the BACD, and regularly attends training courses, conferences and does presentations to the public.

Anne Strudwick is the practice manager to Viridian Medical. Anne is very well informed on cosmetic work as she has worked in that arena for 30 years. She has a good understanding of what each treatment involves and will be able to give you a comprehensive idea from the outset of your enquiry.

On a more personal note Dr Brookes describes herself as always having been “arty” and a keen drawer of portraits. She has a genuine love of aesthetics which has sprung up from those early years. For her a career in cosmetic medicine is a perfect blend of all existing skills and passions.

BMI – British Medical Independent Hospitals

The largest group of private hospitals in the UK offers high quality consulting room space and treatment rooms that are clean modern and bright and welcoming with nursing back up and inpatient facilities. There is a dispensing pharmacy onsite if you need a prescription or painkillers. Mount Alvernia is well known amongst Guildford residents. Coming here will give you some anonymity as you could easily be here to see the dentist, physio or for an X-Ray. Your aesthetic affairs can be kept quite private and off the High street!

Viridian Medical has particularly chosen to work with BMI as the services complement each other as well as having Plastic surgery colleagues that are BAAPS registered if this is needed.

The Smartlipo procedure is carried out at the Guildford BMI Hospital where there are proper changing facilities, and private recovery areas in a discreet environment.

More importantly a well equipped minor operating theatre and laser competent nurses to assist in the procedures.

Smartlipo should be regarded as a cosmetic surgical procedure albeit a minimally invasive one. There are inpatient facilities onsite in the event of an emergency.

British Association of Cosmetic Doctors BACD

A professional body of doctors only, now with membership of over 300 with a keen interest in cosmetic medicine. Two annual education conferences, examinations and validation (which Dr Brookes has successfully completed) and shortly a full Diploma course for its members. This exciting organisation brings cutting edge knowledge to its members with international speakers bringing together dermatologists, plastic surgeons all with the aim to bring the best techniques and body of knowledge to the membership.

Approach at Viridian medical
- honest impartial advice in your best interest
- natural appearance to keep you looking good for your age

A mature approach taking time to establish your goals and truly impartial advice so you are aware of the procedures that they entail and what is a realistic result. Our patient age range is from 30 to 80 years both female and male and feedback about the service and information is highly encouraging. We have patient feedback questionnaires so we are aware of what your experiences have been.

The service is individualised and if Dr Brookes feels that Viridian Medical cannot give you the treatment you need we have a network of colleagues who are experts in their field e.g. other consultants within the Surrey area and professional relationships with other clinics to make sure you get the right treatment for you.

If you are open to guidance means we can work with you to make suggestions that will be to your benefit as there may be techniques you are not familiar with. The main objective is to give you honest impartial advice that is in your best interest.

Our aim is to give you a natural look that people will admire but not necessarily be aware of your secret. The service is discreet.

You will be given a transparent price of the cost of the procedures and if you are having a package of procedures, depending on the requirements, a more favourable rate can be achieved.

I recently went to a Pamepered Chef party where that question was posed and while most women said they'd take more vacations, or work on the house, one woman said "Botox, I would get botox!". She said it with such enthusiasm that all the other women in the room giggled a bit. But then I got to thinking about it. Yes, Botox, why not! I would take my extra paycheck and erase the wrinkles that my job brings on. I would take my extra paycheck and make myself look 10 years younger. I would take my extra paycheck and start feeling better about myself.

Decision made. This morning I googled Botox Doctor Portland Maine to see if the service was even offered in the area...and it is. Only problem..I don't have that extra paycheck yet...

Over 2.4 million botox procedures were performed in US women in 2007, according to statistical data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. 25% of these injections were performed in women between the ages of 51 and 64, while 47% were perfomed in women between the ages of 30 and 50.

What these stats imply is that menopausal women are getting a lot of botox done.

In the youth-obsessed culture in which we live, cutting, reshaping, lifting and plumping has become the norm, not the exception. Yet, I do wonder whether or not too much of a good thing is well, is too much of a good thing. When I see photos of celebrities like Nicole Kidman or Cher, I just cringe. And isn't it ironic that one of the most potent poisons we know of is used to create the illusion of youth?

I'm not going to stand on a high moral ground judging women's decisions to inject toxin into their faces to smooth the wrinkles and recapture a few fleeting moments of youth. (Okay, well, that sounds a bit judgmental!) Truly though, the drive to steal a youthful appearance, if only for a few weeks or months, is perfectly understandable; I can't tell you how many mornings I look in the mirror, and ask myself "what happened?"

But the real challenge is to understand how the external changes that we can see relate to the internal changes that we can't. I believe that this knowledge can help us to define effective longer-term strategies that ultimately result in a better balance between the two.

Afterall, botox is only skin-deep, isn't it?

What do you think?

There’s a lot of buzz lately about the Botox breast lift. People seem to want to know what, exactly, it is, whether it's safe, and if it even really works.

What is it?

A Botox breast lift uses the popular wrinkle treatment to relax certain pectoral muscles under the breast causing a woman to stand up straighter, making her breasts appear higher and perkier. It doesn’t actually increase the size of the breast or tighten excess skin like a surgical breast lift or augmentation, but it requires no recovery time, and, according to some doctors, is safer than the more common surgical procedures. It also has what some see as the “advantage” of temporary effects, allowing women to try it out without making a long-term commitment.

Is it Safe?

Though breast lifts are an “off-label” use for Botox, it is to each doctor’s discretion whether to use it for this purpose or not. New York dermatologist Dr. Patrician Wexler uses the treatment in her practice, saying it spares the patient the potential surgical complications of a traditional lift. In a recent interview with CBS, Wexler said:

“There’s no anesthesia, there’s no scarring, there’s no post-operative pain, and certainly the risks are less.”

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Griffin, on the other hand, disagrees, noting that Botox can migrate from its intended target, and fears the effects on a patient if their pectoral muscles are partially paralyzed. Others worry about the amount of Botox being injected, saying that using the toxin on anyone other than small breasted women would require unsafe amounts and shouldn’t be done.

Does it Work?

It seems to work in smaller breasted women to correct their posture, making their breasts appear perkier. It cannot tighten loose, lax skin or correct severe or even moderate sagging. It can work to give some women that extra little boost they may be looking for, temporarily. Dr. Wexler, a proponent of the Botox breast lift says:

“I think it’s something you wouldn’t do on a regular basis, but if somebody were to have a very special gown that would be very difficult to wear with a bra, and you wanted to have a lift of your breast for that special occasion, this is a very effective way of giving one a lift without any risk or downside.”

According to Dr. Wexler, the treatment, which lasts between 10 to 12 weeks, can cost anywhere between $1,500 and $2,000 for both breasts. What a “very special gown” it would have to be indeed. But still, if that little boost is what you seek, and you trust the skills and judgment of the doctor administering the drug, you may want to give it a try.

For more information on breast enhancement or safe and effective uses for Botox, Washington DC plastic surgeons at CPS can help.

We’ve all seen celebrities who take cosmetic surgery to an extreme. Just look at the change in

We've all seen celebrities who take cosmetic surgery to an extreme. Just look at the change in Michael Jackson over the years. He is no longer even recognizable as himself. What drives those with too much money and too little sense to become addicted to cosmetic surgery? How can they not realize that after the initial couple of surgeries they are making themselves look freakish rather than attractive? Obviously there exists a problem of celebrity addiction to plastic surgery.

Increasingly we can see that people can become hooked on botox, facelifts and liposuction the same way that they get hooked on drugs and alcohol or gambling. They keep coming back for more and more even though it no longer helps them, but only makes things worse. Psychologists say that such people have a disorder called body dysmorphic disorder, which results in them perceiving themselves as being ugly. It is similar to and shares symptoms with disorders like anorexia and bulimia.

In the past we wouldn't see many cases of cosmetic surgery addiction because only celebrities and the wealthy could afford it. However these days it is on the increase due to the ready availability of cheap plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery financing. There's nothing wrong with the average person having access to plastic surgery so long as they use it responsibly. Proper use of cosmetic surgery can do wonders for a persons self confidence.

When problems arise is when a small liposuction here and a rhinoplasty there become an obsession. The person begins coming back to the cosmetic surgeon for more and more work as they find small imperfections they are unhappy with. Each additional procedure leads to more dissatisfaction and more work done. Sound familiar? This is the same progression you'll see in any addiction.

The only way to really address the addiction is through counseling or therapy. Additional cosmetic surgery procedures will not help, they will only hinder the patient.

There are two things contributing to this escalating problem of plastic surgery addiction. The first is the advertising from cosmetic surgeons that only began in 1979 and the second is the constant media bombardment telling us we need to be thinner, younger, prettier. Cosmetic surgeons are seeing increasing numbers of patients each year, especially young girls. In fact, breast augmentation surpassed rhinoplasty as the top cosmetic surgery procedure performed for the first time last year.

Constant pressure from the media for people to conform to a particular idea of the perfect body shape or look has only helped to aggravate this problem, and we are seeing more and more people (particularly girls) resorting to unnecessary methods at a far younger age.

Even with this new problem arising we have to remember that for the vast majority of people the benefits of cosmetic surgery far outweigh any problems. Plastic surgery on trauma victims, burn patients and those who have otherwise been disfigured are an important and necessary surgical procedure. And even those just looking to improve their looks can get a huge boost in their self esteem and confidence making plastic surgery beneficial.

Deciding on cosmetic surgery is not a decision to be taken lightly. It can however be the right decision when pursued wisely and with responsibility.

Reality TV shows that suggested the non-surgically altered body was in dire need of transformation h

Reality TV shows that suggested the non-surgically altered body was in dire need of transformation had their heyday a few years back. Shows such as Extreme Makeover, Dr. 90210, Miami Slice, and I Want a Famous Face revealed that inhabiting an ‘average' body was no longer acceptable.

While the surgical fest of these earlier shows has been replaced with the likes of Ten Years Younger, America's Top Model, She's Got the Look and Battle of the Bods, which also argue appearance is the be all and end all, the surgical imperative has not abated. Rather, surgery has gone underground and, instead of featuring cosmetic surgery as the key to beautification, beauty competition shows hide the fact that many of their contestants have been surgically sculpted. As with the many movie stars who don't advertise their surgical alterations, these shows pretend the bodies on display are natural. This stance is perhaps even more insidious than the surgical celebration offered by shows such as The Swan because it denies the extreme diversity of natural bodies, insisting that the tall, ultra-thin, white-smiled, small nosed, big-boobed, wrinkle-free bods are natural rather than constructed via abnormal exercise, eating, (and all too often surgical) regimens.

Back in 2005, I published a paper examining the show The Swan entitled "Excessive Performances of the Same: Beauty as the Beast of Reality TV" in Performance: A Journal of Feminist Theory Special Issue. While the show itself is no longer running, I think the analysis is still pertinent in our appearance-obsessed society. Due to the response to my "What if we gave up the ‘top model' paradigm rather than expanding it" post, I will be posting arguments from this paper in blog sized bits in order to keep the analysis of the beauty paradigm going. Hope you enjoy!

For those of you who never had the displeasure of watching The Swan, the show aimed to transform so-called ‘ugly ducklings' into ‘beautiful swans' via multiple surgical alterations. Undergoing up to twenty surgical procedures, contestants were then given three months to recover before being judged on national television in a beauty pageant style competition. Again and again, contestants would confirm the claim made by so many cosmetic surgeons (and their patients), that ‘improving' one's looks would lead to happiness and success. For example, the first season's winner, Rachel Fraser, responded to criticism of the show by arguing "I don't think anybody should fault anyone for making themselves a better person." Yeah, because cutting away bits of your body and adding in fake booby bags really improves the type of person one is.

I don't intend to suggest, as some critics have, that enjoying the ‘performance' of beauty is somehow non- or anti-feminist. Rather, I am troubled by the pervasiveness of a very narrow beauty imperative and especially in the growing cultural approval and faith in the ‘surgical fix.' Quite problematically, surgical makeover shows and their top-model variety descendents tell us that the appearance of our bodies is more important than the contents of our minds, that our twisted social attitudes towards beauty are entirely acceptable, that our identity is lodged in the size of our nose or the firmness of our thighs, that liposuction and breast augmentation are two key elements in the fabrication of ‘better people'.

Such messages are particularly appalling when we consider that one of the former Swan contestants is an elementary school teacher - a teacher who now daily offers her surgically altered self to her young students as an embodied reminder that success in America is reliant on appearance - that one day, they too can grow up to fulfil the ‘American Dream' and have their noses whittled away, their fat sucked out, and their faces lifted.

Such messages are also problematic when we note that another Swan convinced her young son that he needed to lose 45 pounds to be happy after her own Swan induced weight loss; that another enthused during season two's premier that her own transformation inspired her mother to go for Botox. How wonderful - now all ages and genders are being encouraged they must lose weight to be happy, be wrinkle free to be successful, undergo the knife to achieve confidence and self esteem.

Most worryingly, these beauty=success messages foreground individual agency while simultaneously ignoring or failing to assess a social cure. For, shouldn't society be taken to task for its rigid beauty conventions, its mass dissemination of unreal standards, and its excessive valorisation of a very narrow beauty imperative? Instead, shows such as The Swan and the more recent Ten Years Younger suggest that the unease many feel towards their appearances and identities is not socially constructed and maintained, but is an individual problem that can and should be fixed.

And, as revealed in the narratives of surgical makeover shows, the body beautiful is not fat, not disabled, not gay, and not ‘too ethnic looking'. It is a body chiseled, sculpted, dieted, and surgically altered into a fairy tale version of beauty.
