(Update: 4:15pm PST) Earlier this afternoon, some of you e-mailed me to ask if Wayne Bent was in custody.  In my effort to track down an answer to that question, I ultimately spoke with someone who should know the answer:  Sgt. Bobbie Long of the Clayton Police Department.

Long is very familiar with the city/county holding cells where Bent would be held "if" he were in custody.  In fact, this is the same facility that held Bent in early May.

Based on my conversation with Sgt. Long, it does not appear Bent is in custody.  Long had several interesting things to say. And she allowed me to record our phone conservation for the purpose of the audio recording you will find in the following mp3:  Sgt. Bobbie Long interview.

I imagine it's possible that new and more precise information about the case has hit the wires & news Web sites since I began working on this podcast earlier this afternoon. Any corrections, clarifications and updates will be provided here after I get a chance to scour the news Web sites.

(Update: 2:17pm PST) I've attempted to reach Wayne Bent's attorney, Sarah Montoya, for comment on this story.  Montoya's colleague, DJ Martinez, explained that Montoya has left the office due to an urgent family matter.

(Update: 1:11pm PST) Still don't have the "nuts and bolts" concerning what happened at this morning's arraignment.  State's lead investigator on the Bent case, Dave Oliphant, has just told me that any specifics about Wayne Bent's arraignment must come from District Attorney Donald Gallegos.

Person answering phone at Mr. Gallegos's office tells me Mr. Gallegos is out of the office and won't be back until Monday.  I do, however, have a cell number for Mr. Gallegos.  I've left a voice mail on Mr. Gallegos's cell number requesting a return call regarding the Bent arraignment.

Lead investigator Oliphant was able to share with me that Senior Trial Prosecutor Amelio Chavez filled-in this morning for an ailing Assistant District Attorney Thomas Benavitez.

Oliphant also shared that Mr. Bent was represented by public defender Sarah Montoya.

(Update: 12:21pm PST) Still working to get the details of this morning's arraignment.  I've been in contact with District Courts in Union and Colfax counties.  I'm also waiting to hear back from person with the DA's office.

Employee at clerk's office in Raton (Colfax County) explained that the information is not in their local system and must be forwarded by Judge Gerald E. Baca to Union County Courthouse (Clayton).  Apparently, the judge hasn't done this yet and is presently on the bench hearing other cases. Judge is expected to be on the bench throughout this afternoon.  A very busy Friday for the judge, no doubt.

Deputy Clerk at Union County Courthouse says she has yet to receive word from Raton concerning outcome of today's arraignment.

Hoping to make contact with DA person soon.  He's been en route from Raton to Clayton since the conclusion of this morning's arraignment.

(July 18, 10:22am PST) An employee in the Clerk's Office at the State District Courthouse in Raton, New Mexico confirms that this morning's arraignment of church leader Wayne Bent has concluded.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A baby's smile does more than warm a mother's heart -- it also lights up the reward centers of her brain, according to the results of a brain imaging study.

The finding, investigators say, could go a long way in helping researchers dissect the unique bond between mother and infant and how it sometimes goes wrong.

"The relationship between mothers and infants is critical for child development," Dr. Lane Strathearn, of the Human Neuroimaging Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston noted in a statement.

"For whatever reason, in some cases, that relationship doesn't develop normally. Neglect and abuse can result, with devastating effects on a child's development," Strathearn explained.

Strathearn and colleagues used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to scan the brains of 28 first-time mothers of 5- to 10-month-old infants while they looked at photos of their own babies and other infants.

In some of the photos babies were smiling or happy. In others, the infants were sad and in some they had neutral expressions.

The investigators found that when the mothers saw their own infants' faces, key areas of the brain associated with reward lit up during the scans, suggesting increased blood flow to that area.

The areas stimulated by the sight of their own babies were those involved in thinking, movement, behavior and emotion. "These are areas that have been activated in other experiments associated with drug addiction," said Strathearn.

"It may be that seeing your own baby's smiling face is like a 'natural high,'" the investigator added.

The strength of mom's reaction depended on her baby's facial expression. "The strongest activation was with smiling faces," Strathearn said. There was less effect from pictures of their babies with sad or neutral expressions.

"We were expecting a different reaction with sad faces," the researcher explained. In fact, the team found little difference in the reaction of the mothers' brains to their own babies' crying face compared to that of an unknown child.

Overall, the mothers responded much more strongly to their own infants' faces than to those of an unknown baby.

"Understanding how a mother responds uniquely to her own infant, when smiling or crying," Strathearn said, may be the first step in understanding the neural basis of mother-infant attachment.

The fun in cricket is replaced by Pepsi hoardings. The sheer excitement of Warne’s flipper is overshadowed by Dhoni’s haircut. Attention-seekers and flashes-in-the-pan have now been elevated to the status of demi-gods. Gone are the days when cricketers such as Lara, Waugh brothers, Aravinda De Silva, Cairns and the Flower brothers commanded the attention of the crowd with their sheer talent. All the so-called modern cricketing heroes are either fading shadows of their former selves or untalented ruffians who end up being poor imitations of what they are trying to be.

Kerry Packer, who heralded the era of one-day cricket, desperately wanted to portray the game as a cocktail of sporting unpredictability, bright colours and a lot of money. The original rules of ODIs actually made for interesting viewing. The next step, which involved in slog overs and heady bouncers, was commendable. The evolution should have been arrested right then and there. The new ODI rules will signal the death of the fast bowler and quite possibly the destruction of a large fan base.

Test cricket is faring no better. Five days seem to go on forever and this unnatural feeling can be directly attributed to the Asian countries. For the past decade, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been dangerously treading the line between being silly and being defensive. The urge not to lose is so fantastically great that it surpasses the drive to win with considerable ease. The Ashes Series 2005 exhumed some sort of life into the corpse of Test cricket, but one year later as Sri Lanka gears up to face South Africa in the battle of the dead doorknobs, the effect has been ruined.

All hope is not lost yet, I believe. Characters such as Pieterson, Hussey, Shane Bond and Sangakkara are still shining bright with their sporting endeavors, but it is going to be a horridly difficult task for the game to garner the interest it once did.

So…howzzat, you ask. Pretty damn bleak, I should say.

JAMES ISLAND — A 38-year-old carpenter was jailed this week after police accused him of biting off most of a man's nose during a fight at the Burger King on Folly Road.

A 32-year-old man was at the restaurant's drive-thru about 11 p.m. Tuesday when he noticed a white truck behind him with smoking tires, an incident report said. It said the truck then struck the man's vehicle.

Both men got out and went to the ground in a fight, the report said. A witness told police that at one point he saw the truck driver rise up with his face covered in blood and that he spit out a piece of flesh. Charleston County sheriff's deputies observed that the truck driver had blood on his face but no wound, the incident report said.

A piece of the man's nose was taken with him to Medical University Hospital, where he was last listed in fair condition, the report said. He was no longer at the hospital Wednesday, the hospital said.

Gary Eastwood of Fleming Road is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and remained at the Charleston County Detention Center on Wednesday night. His bond was set at $100,000.

Eastwood told deputies he intentionally bit the man's nose off because he was in a "war," according to the report. It said that as a deputy was taking Eastwood to the jail, Eastwood graphically described the taste of blood.

In Licence to Kill Bond embarks on a personal vendetta to avenge the maiming of his friend Felix Lieter and the death of Felix's nearly-wed wife. His vendetta goes against his orders from M so Bond has no choice but to resign and set out on his own.

As a long time Bond fan, I have found there is a nice novely to a rogue 007. When Bond is out doing his own thing, without direct aid from M16, it forces him to rely mainly on his wits and spy sense as opposed to set-up connections with M16 agents and nifty Q-branch gadgets.

Granted Bond is never ever really alone. Like in Licence to Kill when a worried Moneypenny sends Q out to help Bond. It seems that even when Bond is acting against orders, his superiors at the very least respect him enough to know he's probably doing in the right thing. But respect and duty are two separate things so most of Bond's superiors, namely M, have to keep the pressure on Bond despite possible personal feelings to the contrary.

As if I wasn't excited enough about Quantum of Solace, the knowledge I will get to see the antics of a rogue Bond just make me that much more excited.

This morning, I turned my PS3 on to download 2.41.  I turned it off again.

Was at work on a few reviews but stalled a bit over the weekend.  We had very lovely visitors and they left me - through no cause of their own devising - a lot tired and a little melancholy.  The urge to write an absolutely bleak short story slumped along and I took it.  She said she'd show me hers if I showed mine first and so.  The misery will continue until I'm done with poor Judd.

WOW! I’m going to start by saying that I’m not even angry with Nas. He was a child and his father is responsible for this foolisheness. It's cool that he loves his father, but no matter how you feel about marijuana, whether you hate it, love it, wish it was legal, think it should be medicinal, whatever! most people with the sense God gave a duck can agree that NO CHILD should be exposed to drug use!
What makes me even more sad was that Nas felt pride in his father's poor choices because at least he was around. That's the options for little black boys? A dad in jail, a dad who abandons you, or a dad that introduces you to drug use and other vices, but at least he's there??

Good Lord!, I'm not even mad at Nas, I'm just sad for him.

Did you know that Johnny cash once fought an emu? Well you do now, and for story telling purposes, I’m going to say he was drunk, on drugs, and still kicked it’s fucking ass, and then barbequed it later that day.

This makes Johnny Cash fucking manly.

Why?

He kicked the ass of one of the most useless damned animals on the planet, and he probably had some good country tunes about his dog dying, and his woman havin’ no soul, to back his ass kicking, that combined with the fact he ate it afterwards makes him fucking hard as nails, because he completely disregarded all the bullshit about healthy eating by eating a whole emu.

If the answer is zero, you’re probably not manly enough to even be allowed to read about this man. Aron Ralston could kick your ass, even with one arm, he’s that manly. Aron Ralston is now a predominantly non profit public speaker, because real men don’t charge for their services of being fucking hard as nails.

The most manly thing about Ralston?

He still climbs mountains and kicks their asses on a daily basis. In reality, God was jealous of Ralston's unending purity of manhood, and took his right arm away from him, in a fit of rage.

Elvis Presley, he died of a drug overdose on a toilet, fat and bloated. And that's how a fucking man dies.

Finally, Clint Eastwood.... This is a man who eats women for breakfast, shoots more Mexicans than the American boarder patrol, and rapes faces with nothing more than a hat, spurs and a revolver. His daily routine consists of getting up, (he doesn't wake up because he doesn't sleep) eating women for breakfast, shooting Mexicans, ordering women about, riding a horse bareback while shooting Mexicans, saving a small village, finding gold and giving it to the poor, then shooting the poor for stealing a loaf of bread even though he just gave them gold, then shooting Mexicans, having one good shit, having one good wank, then going to sit in his home to drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes in the fucking dark.

Clint + Eastwood = More manly than anything on this fucking Earth.

But then since I liked Safari's font rendering technology so much, I just couldn't give up on it. I downloaded Firefox 3 on "Download Day." And to my surprise I found something strange about Safari and Firefox. When I have both Safari and Firefox open side by side, I don't get the problems I usually get with Safari and the missing server. Also if I login into Gmail using Firefox, I'm able to use the same through my Safari. I wonder what kind of mysterious bond is shared by the two. I guess there might be some sharing of cache memory or cookies ( or whatever technical jargon I'm currently ignorant of ) But fact is they both are working great. But I'm using Safari ofcourse. Apart from its font rendering, some of its other merits are

• Simple user interface. Once you use it, it's really the easiest there is.
• The menus and address bars occupy very little space, leaving the major portion of your screen free to display actual webpage content.
• The bookmarks window is really good and simple. Not only does it automatically get the previous bookmarks from your already installed browser, it makes organizing your bookmarks a breeze. 
• The auto complete feature for webpage addresses includes bookmarks as well. This is a feature that I haven't seen in many browsers. When you type your URL in the address bar, it automatically lists similar entries found in the bookmarks(as opposed to entries in the History which most browsers normally display)

Apart from that it has all the usual features of a webpage. I'll give you a few screen shots to give you a glimpse of what I'm actually talking about.
