Or am I? Mes amis, you are in for a ride should you choose to follow this documentation of Girl vs. World.

Or Girl And World Take on Universe.

Or Girl Learns to Quit Being so Hard-Headed and Get Along with Universe.

So the synopsis remains elusive, but I can (if history does, in fact, repeat itself - and it certainly seems to) guarantee adventure, mayhem, heartache, introspection, deep thought, shallow thought and moments of sheer, soul-squashing, brain-swelling boredom (but I promise not to carry on too much about the latter, lest your poor head also balloon like a startled blowfish). Maybe I don't know you, but I care.

But first....

Who am I, and why should you care?

Well, quite frankly, you shouldn't care. But as you're still reading this, it appears you do.

I am female. 27-years-old. White. Pale Pasty. And damn proud of it (surely you will hear more on this in posts-to-come). American, and not necessarily proud of it at the moment.

A musician: piano-playing, singing, songwriting, leader of a band in a mid-size, Midwestern city where they care far more for football than live music. I am no longer in it for the potential of rockstardom. (I still harbor fantasies about such things). (And some would say an over-user of parentheses). (The can sod off).

By day, I appear to be an average worker bee. A drone, off to work downtown at 9, back home at 5. (A sheep, as J would say.) I am not yet in my thirties, but I feel the heat from that fire already. I do not know where my life is going. I have learned to not care, but to not give up, either.

That is me in a nutshell. But there's not a nutshell in this world large enough to explain who I am and what I am up to in this world. And so there is Curiouser&Curiouser. Apt proof that I am here, and I am living.

To be living is to be exploring your world, whether it's the underside of your bed (where the EFF were my navy patent pumps this morning??), the city you live in, the surrounding great outdoors or the lands beyond and across the sea.

To be living is to be actively figuring out this life.

You are welcome to join me.

~a

I went with Omar to Churchill's for his friend's birthday. Why a 20-something girl would want to go to a bar where old, fat, balding men sit and smoke cigars, I will never understand. Regardless, we were at Churchill's. I apparently got on Om's nerves way too much. His friend John was talking about John Mayer's music...which Omar is not a fan of, but I know enough about to carry on a conversation. So I did. And that annoyed silly little Omar. I guess.

There's a huge aquarium in the dive and after we finished talking to John, Omar and I were looking at the fishies. Then, out of no where, Dr. Jeckyl turned into Mr. Hyde. And he insulted me in the dumbest way possible. He said something like...Baby, you kind of remind me of that fish. He was pointing at this Blowfish. At first I thought he was saying I was chubby, but decided to ask why any way.

I was wrong. He said I reminded him of the blowfish because I walk around frowning all the time.

My response was not sugar-coated at all. I simply replied with...maybe i'm frowning because you're such an asshole to me all of the time.

Yeah...that little comment didn't go over well...at all. But I'm not a good liar. C'est la vie!

So about two days after my rant about Hootie and the Blowfish, I'm at the gym watching the tv as I'm on the elliptical and notice this new video coming on CMT. And guess who it is? Darius Rucker. I think God I wasn't on the treadmill at the time or else I probably would have fallen off.

I have no idea what the song sounds like though every time I go to the gym now, that video comes on. It's like now I'm going to be haunted by Darius Rucker wherever I go. GREAT.

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl rand -base64 6
I3xJ9zl3
[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl rand -base64 6
GYRCbFNB
[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl rand -base64 6
2TmgOqMV
[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl rand -base64 6
ZuPblCs2
[root@slackware12 /tmp]#

Selanjutnya, kita akan belajar mengenai encode suatu kalimat sederhana, buka konsole lagi ( sebaiknya jangan tutup konsole dulu ya mas, kita masih pakai kok :-) )

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# echo "ini kalimat rahasia, jangan dibaca" | openssl enc -base64

hasilnya :
aW5pIGthbGltYXQgcmFoYXNpYSwgamFuZ2FuIGRpYmFjYQo=

root@slackware12 /tmp]# echo aW5pIGthbGltYXQgcmFoYXNpYSwgamFuZ2FuIGRpYmFjYQo= | openssl enc -base64 -d
ini kalimat rahasia, jangan dibaca

Keren bukan :-)

Lah terus kalo yang mau di-encode adalah suatu file gimana caranya ??? bentar ane baca help dulu ya ....

Ketemu !!! begini caranya :

Drag-and-drop the following link to your bookmarks bar or right click it and add it to your favorites for a posting shortcut.

dan kita ingin mengenkrip-nya, caranya :

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl enc -base64 -in /tmp/rahasia.txt
RHJhZy1hbmQtZHJvcCB0aGUgZm9sbG93aW5nIGxpbmsgdG8geW91ciBib29rbWFy
a3MgYmFyIG9yIHJpZ2h0IGNsaWNrIGl0IGFuZCBhZGQgaXQgdG8geW91ciBmYXZv
cml0ZXMgZm9yIGEgcG9zdGluZyBzaG9ydGN1dC4=
[root@slackware12 /tmp]#

Begini caranya :

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl enc -base64 -in /tmp/rahasia.txt -out /tmp/rahasia.enc
[root@slackware12 /tmp]# cat /tmp/rahasia.enc
RHJhZy1hbmQtZHJvcCB0aGUgZm9sbG93aW5nIGxpbmsgdG8geW91ciBib29rbWFy
a3MgYmFyIG9yIHJpZ2h0IGNsaWNrIGl0IGFuZCBhZGQgaXQgdG8geW91ciBmYXZv
cml0ZXMgZm9yIGEgcG9zdGluZyBzaG9ydGN1dC4=
[root@slackware12 /tmp]#

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl enc -base64 -d -in /tmp/rahasia.enc -out /tmp/rahasia.txt

OKe kita mulai saja perintah pertama.

[root@slackware12 /]# cd /tmp/
[root@slackware12 /tmp]#

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# tar zcvfP mysecret.tar.gz secret
/tmp/secret/
/tmp/secret/get.txt
/tmp/secret/get-slax.txt
/tmp/secret/friends
/tmp/secret/userdic.tlx
/tmp/secret/-get.txt
/tmp/secret/asli
/tmp/secret/getsmiley.txt
/tmp/secret/bookmarks.html
/tmp/secret/Bleezer.xml

Selanjutnya melakukan proses perubahan status hak kepemilikan supaya file tersebut menjadi sedilit lebih aman.

[root@slackware12 /]# chown 600 /tmp/mysecret.tar.gz

[root@slackware12 /]# openssl enc -blowfish -in /tmp/mysecret.tar.gz -out /tmp/mysecret.tgz.bf
enter bf-cbc encryption password: ************
Verifying - enter bf-cbc encryption password: ************
[root@slackware12 /]#

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# openssl enc -blowfish -d -in /tmp/mysecret.tgz.bf -out /tmp/mysecret.tar.gz
enter bf-cbc decryption password: ************

[root@slackware12 /tmp]# tar -zxvf /tmp/mysecret.tar.gz

Selamat mencoba jadi detektif :-)

Keepass Password Safe is a highly effective program for managing your passwords. This software is OSI Certified Open Source Software. Friends or foes, pranks or planned attacks, nothing seems to penetrate the might of this little monster. It has been built with the strong AES encryption algorithm. It is one of the most respected encryption algorithm. The auto type feature lets you enter passwords that even key loggers cant detect, because it types a few characters with gaps in between and then inserts the rest of the characters. It has set of beautiful icons that can be attached to specific entry of username and password for easy visualization. All passwords can be set to expire within a certain period of time. The passwords can be combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, some special symbols and many more options. It is available at www.keepass.com . It is available in portable version at www.portableapps.com also, which means you can carry your password with you wherever you go.

I wanted to take a moment to update the blog on a few different subjects:

I spoke with a reporter the other day from a worthwhile publication on the subject of music. I thought it was a great conversation. She was one of the few people I have ever spoken with who I thought really understood music on a whole different level. That will be obvious to you should she decide to go forward and publish the article. Hopefully, her editors are at least half as kewl as her. Also I really liked her on a personal level as well, but that's not unusual since she struck me as being one of those people who is interested in and conversant on a number of different topics. If she submits her article and her editor decides to publish it, I will provide a link when it comes out.

I am still transitioning my "old" music blogs from my other weblog site. In the coming week, I should complete this task and then I can start publishing new blogs again. In the meantime, reread them. I promise they're not all that painful.

I did not receive a single response on the music quiz. C'mon folks. There's only one question which can't easily be found with a little internet research.

I just bought tickets to see John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett in concert at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis. Truly a beautiful venue with two of the best singer-songwriters touring today. When I lived in Nashville it was virtually impossible to get tickets to see either John Hiatt or Steve Earle. In fact, I once went to see John Hiatt warm up for Hootie back in the day. It was a driving rainstorm so JH only played seven or eight songs. As soon as he finished his set I left. Last year I was at a friend's lake house and he told me his neighbor had just sold his house. It turned out the neighbor was JH. I was totally bummed.

Earlier this year Elvis Costello played The New Daisy Theater on Beale Street. I had a friend who offered to get me in backstage. I'm still kicking myself for not taking him up on it.

It is Elvis Week! I have always referred to this week as Elvister and the week of January 8th (his birthday) as Elvismas. There are a ton of tourists in town as always. Many of them are Europeans and Asians. I did my undergraduate work at a small college in Memphis. During Elvis Week we used to go out to the candlelight vigil and "goof on" the tourists. One year we made a truck driver so mad he wanted to fight us. The best part of the week is all of the Elvii you can see around town who are here for the tribute competitions.

That's it for now.

I present to you on this lovely Wednesday morning...the world's ugliest and most disgusting looking shoes ever.

I first saw these in person at the Hollywood DSW and immediately sent a picture of it to my sister (after throwing up). I'm glad to see they're also available online.

Ughhhh, look at that. Who in their right mind would think that this design would be appealing? Not only is the colour completely hideous, but it's also made out of this plasticy stretchy material. I mean, does anyone really want to look like they just walked through a meadow of yucky swamp slime? Even worse, people around you could think you have some weird foot fungus growth. Or that you're a hobbit (because hobbits don't wear shoes, REMEMBER?).

UGGHHH I hate holey things, too. They gross me out. LOOK AT THOSE HOLES.

Blowfish is a symmetric block cipher that can be used as a drop-in replacement for DES or IDEA. It takes a variable-length key, from 32 bits to 448 bits, making it ideal for both domestic and exportable use. Blowfish was designed in 1993 by Bruce Schneier as a fast, free alternative to existing encryption algorithms. Since then it has been analyzed considerably, and it is slowly gaining acceptance as a strong encryption algorithm. Blowfish is unpatented and license-free, and is available free for all uses.

The original Blowfish paper was presented at the First Fast Software Encryption workshop in Cambridge, UK (proceedings published by Springer-Verlag, Lecture Notes in Computer Science #809, 1994) and the April 1994 issue of Dr. Dobb's Journal. "Blowfish--One Year Later" appeared in the September 1995 issue of Dr. Dobb's Journal.

Many cryptographers have examined Blowfish, although there are few published results. Serge Vaudenay examined weak keys in Blowfish; there is a class of keys that can be detected--although not broken--in Blowfish variants of 14 rounds or less. Vincent Rijmen's Ph.D. thesis includes a second-order differential attack on 4-round Blowfish that cannot be extended to more rounds.

Everyone is welcome to download Blowfish and use it in their application. There are no rules about use, although I would appreciate being notified of any commercial applications using the product so that I can list them on this website. <!-- Other sites that have free Blowfish source code available for download include ftp.ox.ac.uk (UK), www.task.gda.pl (Poland), and cryptography.org (US and Canada residents only). --> <!--Markus Hahn has written two very fast implementations of Blowfish, for C# and Java; see his software page. The Java implementation runs at 2.6 MB/s on a Pentium 200 under NT4. Another Java implementation of Blowfish is available as part of Cryptix. There are Visual Basic Versions by David Ireland and David Midkiff. -->

Leevi Martilla has demonstrated a C-to-English translator by creating an English version of Blowfish.

David Honig has written a paper about implementing Blowfish in hardware.

For Blowfish implementors, here are the hexadecimal digits of pi, arranged as four s_boxes and one p_array, as per the Blowfish default. Those who want to experiment with longer-round variants of Blowfish can find 65535 hex digits of pi here.

Here are new test vectors so that you can test your own implementation of Blowfish. Here are the test vectors rewritten in a format more friendly to C programmers.

By default, Debian & Ubuntu use MD5 to hash your passwords. While this is relatively secure, using Blowfish instead is (much?) better.

As I’m not a cryptographer, I have no idea how much better it is. But switching is incredibly easy, and there are no downsides, AFAIK. Follow along…

First, you need to install libpam-unix2, the pam module which uses Blowfish. This is only an apt-get away…

Next, replace ‘pam_unix.so’ by ‘pam_unix2.so’ in /etc/pam.d/common-auth, /etc/pam.d/common-account, /etc/pam.d/common-session & /etc/pam.d/common-password.

In /etc/pam.d/common-password, you also need to change ‘md5′ to ‘blowfish’.

And while you’re at it, change ‘max=8′ (still in /etc/pam.d/common-password) to something higher, like ‘max=20′. It is my understanding that this limits the max size of your password. While you can still use a password longer than 8 chars, it’ll just ignore everything after the 8th char.

Those are all the changes you need to make your system start using Blowfish. You will need to create Blowfish hashes though (obviously), so the changes only apply to newly created accounts or when you change (or re-set) your password (using ‘passwd’).

I have only basic knowledge of pam, so some of these modifications may be redundant. Or there might be an even easier way to change it - I don’t know, but these changes will most certainly make it work.

Ok, so this time, UTO decided to go crazy and locate ten of the HOTTEST kicks you can own. The kicks shown in these pictures WILL make a statement, they don't need any help from t-shirts with greek letters on them, no line jackets or anything else. JUST THE SOLES. So, without further adieu', we present 10 Pics...10 kicks:

POODLES.....here they are. SB Dunk Hi (Marge Simpson Ed.) by NIKE. I always think SB Dunks look tough on a female, esp. if they wear those lil sizes. You can rock these to run errands, or to the next greek picnic, and STILL be crushin the game. As of now, these are only available in Asia, so Ebay needs to be your friend.

ELEPHANTS....This shoe is about to change the whole playing field. The Hi Road Sneaker by Blowfish is reaaally not a sneaker. It's actually...well, I don't know. What I DO know is that celebs have been spotted rocking these from NY to LA. These are slated to be as big as, or bigger than Ugg boots. Getcha gear up!

CATS......they did it again. Creative Recreation, the unique SoCal shoe company that has been blowing up these last few years, released this CRAAAAZY color combo. This Cesario Hi is ONLY available in women's sizes. Everyone should have a creative rec shoe (Bleyz and I been on them since....'05), but this color...was made just for you.

FROGS....shut'em down. Cesario Lo by Creative Recreation. There are two distinct things about these sneakers that I respect. 1) Too many shoes use hot pink incorrectly -- these, do it WELL. 2) Lo tops are really fresh, but most are either too bulky or too narrow -- these are just right. Definitely a dress down shoe, but is exclusive enough to turn heads. Kick Game Proper!

APES...go bananas over these joints. Terminator High Supreme by NIKE. This is one of those special/rare moments, when you say to yourself, "God...Thank you." I feel like these are the most simple, classic, elegant-- yet still take a dump on everybody elses shoe game-- footwear of the year. If Stuntin' is a habit....you need to put these in your routine.

DOVES....you already know. Air Max Light by NIKE. Anyone who knows anything about sneakers will tell you that Air Maxs are classic (vintage fresh). This particular model is just...sick. Like typhoid, hay fever, and flu all in one. Color is key with Air Maxs, the more unique the combo, the doper the shoe (in this case, white/medium grey/ and laser blue is sooooo disrespectful to the haters). Re-up on those.

DOVES...I had to go in one more time -- These one's go out to my dudes at Chi (Dennis whatup!) These joints are a beautiful exclusive collaboration between Lanvin + ACNE. Lanvin is known for hi tops, ACNE is known for denim; put'em together and you've just cross-bred a denim hi top that SHAT on all other denim kicks.

RABBITS....alright, I'mma bring'em back. The Muska Skytop!!!! by SUPRA. I posted the cocaina version back in June (white on white for the slowpokes). Supra must've read yall minds....cuz they went and detailed them joints with CRIMSON. I feel like these shoes separate the boys from the nupes men (can't say that cuz of legalities, but you catch my drift). Grab these.

CENTAURS...APES...DOGS....these can be what you make of them. SUPRA, yes, them again. All I have to say is, the shoe is ridiculous. The contours, the color, and the strap are all well-placed. But the damn shoe is just so raw -- I don't even know the name of it. I just got the email and said, HELL YES.

DOGS....straight nasty. The Muska Skytop by SUPRA (alright, last time, ever). BUT, the thing that makes this so ill is the whole shoe is suede. Peep the sole....1cm purple stripes....nasty. I'm convinced that everyone needs to be a fan of this shoe model. Hell, JAY-Z rocked them in several concerts. Basically, understand that this IS the trillest sneaker in the game (right now). Respond accordingly.

1096 Queen Street West

Don't let the exterior of swank black, with the absence of a sign fool you into thinking Nyood (pronounced nude) is too ritzy for you. Dress in your casual best and you will have no trouble gaining entry...but make reservations for the best tables by the window.

Actually there is no bad seating in this beautifully decorated restaurant. The decor is a combination of old meets new, a Parisian feel with a Grecian ceiling (or is it Roman?) meets nouveau modernism touches of white bookshelves, industrial light fixtures and concrete tables. The space is 2000 square feet, and feels spacious yet cozy with a subtle warmth. The elegant, elongated bar meets a tastefully decorated open concept kitchen.

The delicious food comes as tapas. I visited twice in one week! If you like to share your food, then this is the place to come. An extremely delicious lychee shrimp cerviche was my favorite dish. But then my mates and I also gobbled down the mushroom and shrimp flatbread and whole snapper filleted. Dessert was to die for...the strawberry creme brulee, espresso brownie, and the blueberry ice cream (tasted like fried ice cream) were stand outs.

Owned by Hanif Harji, who also owns the trendy Blowfish and Kultura eating spots, and managed by the enthusiastic "Sacha".

Nyood is definitely a place where you take your time and graze. It is the hottest restaurant in Toronto right now, so go! Take about $200.00 for a couple including a glass of wine, taxes and tip.

i've ported blowfish source code that originally written for PIC16F877 microcontroller. It works twice faster than the original one. It can encrypt and decrypt data just in 2310 cycles which is fast. This cipher was invented by the "Security Guru" Bruce Scheneier. The core of blowfish cipher is made from addition, substitution and XOR processes and organized inside 18 rounds feistel structure. For example if plain text and key all contain zeros, the output of blowfish cipher would be "0x706d9fcc1792d23a". Check out two screenshots below.

I really meant to post more on the last entry, but... I didn't. No aquarium pictures, no ant travails, no explanation of the mysterious Sam Adams 'sensual' comment-

I lost my momentum.

But now... NOW! Now I have time.

Let me first revisit this bit though- the sweetly retarded aspects of being in love. There is nothing really sweet about it. Love is retarded. Love is a lobotomized bulldog that leaves odd, wet patches where it slept on your pillow. Treasure it or throw it out the window, either way, you'll eventually be responsible for the mess it makes.

Hey, that was deep. I should get that embroidered on a t-shirt. "Love is a lobotomized bulldog."

Now the Aquarium:

I was really pretty pleased how the pictures turned out. I'm no portrait picasso or landscape artist, but I do capture a fine fish.

Click on the pic if you wanna see any of these in godzilla frame.

Each of these fish is a fascinating species with their own specific habits and habitats. Unfortunately, I only remember the name of one of them, so none of that information is available to relate. I can tell you, though, that these guys are a highly reflective shiny silver, and as thin as a dinner plate. I love the ocean because the creatures within it prove that someone up there has a wild imagination.

Wait till you see the next one. It looks like some sort of exotic bird with fanning plumage.

Do you see it? No? Well check him out from underneath:

Lest you tire of fish, I've got crabs, too. Wait, that didn't come out right....

I actually do know what this is: The Japanese Spider Crab. It's the largest living arthropod in the world, with a leg span that can reach up to four meters from end to end. These guys weren't quite that long, but they were impressive; as big as a large dog. Japanese Spider Crabs are believed to live as long as 100 years, and are thus classified as living fossils.

And on the other end of the spectrum, you have this little guy logging in at about four inches. Isn't he cute? *cooes*

Look, a poker fish! He's full tilt!

Had to snap this shot. His profile reminded me viscerally of my Uncle Darrell.

Aren't they lovely? You'd think they'd be more popular.

Finally, we come to the mystical fish. I kind of want one of these now. It was really hard to get a picture, they're crazy good at moving just when you've framed a shot, but I got four 'sorta' photos. I'll save those for after the Samuel Adams thing, but I wish there had been a way to let you see these fish. They were so... woah. Like not even real. They're cartoons. They're dragons. They're fantasy/sci-fi creatures. And they're really poisonous to eat. Think about that while I peruse some copy from the Sam Adams site, and you can let your mind wander here and there through the romantic, provocative descriptions of these quality brews.

Samuel Adams White Ale:

The style gets its name from the white, milky appearance of this unfiltered wheat ale...we add a proprietary spice blend to give Samuel Adams White Ale a unique and complex flavor, without being overpowering or cloying... The spice blend includes orange and lemon peel, dried plum, grains of paradise, coriander, anise, hibiscus, rose hips, tamarind, and vanilla. It is this special blend of spices that gives Samuel Adams White Ale its unique character, complexity and refreshing drinkability. The beer is coarse filtered, leaving a white haze from the malt proteins.

Samuel Adams Brown Ale:

Dark in color yet medium bodied. Rich and smooth. Samuel Adams Brown Ale is a study in flavor, body, and style. Supported by an interesting blend of malts, it shines with a deep mahogany luster. The roasted malt blend is complex and deep as well, with notes of biscuit, nut and caramel. The hops are imported from Europe; Noble Spalt from Germany and citrusy Goldings, a traditional British ale hop selected from a single farm in East Kent. With moderate hop bitterness, a deep malt body, and a fruity ale fermentation character, Samuel Adams Brown Ale satisfies the soul and doesn’t overwhelm the tongue.

!!!

Tell me more, you naughty, naughty marketing men.

Samuel Adams Old Fezziwig Ale:

The full body hits the palate first with a depth of malt character ranging from sweeter toffee and caramel notes to the more dark, roasty chocolate notes. Then come the spices in full force. Cinnamon, ginger and orange peel dance on the tongue bringing with them the celebratory spirit that goes hand in hand with the season.

Oh God, that was satisfying. I'll leave the darker stuff for the more hard-core. You know what I'm talkin' about... Sam Adam's Double Bock, which is actually illegal in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Now that's a beer.

Finally, I present to you, the Spiny Puffer Blowfish.

Does that even look real? I'm in love with a fish... bring on the bulldog.

I ended up by chance watching a chef dismember a poisonous blowfish. I walked into the restaurant thinking it was a seafood place, and only found out halfway through my meal that the head chef was a certified blowfish handler.

It was a bit creepy when I first walked in, since Kakashika is located in a basement, and as I opened the doors, there was nobody inside except the staff. Normally I'd walk away, but hurrying up the stairs didn't seem like a realistic option, and the waitress was already hushing me to my seat. Since I was the only person on the counter, the chef and I quickly started talking, and I think they were mostly amused at my interest in Japanese food. Somehow we got to the tale of me eating a pulsating shrimp, when a second chef came in from the back holding a massive blowfish and proudly announced that this one had just stopped shaking

I immediately asked if I could stay to see how they chop the fish. My biggest surprise was how much of the fish is inedible. I had somehow assumed that the liver was the dangerous part, and that it would be a small section of the fish. No. I'd say that about 2/3 of the fish, including the skin, ended up in the garbage bin.

I have to say that it seems pretty stupid to eat a fish that can kill us if handled incorrectly, and which doesn't taste so good anyhow. The chef himself admitted to the flavour being unremarkable. When I pressed him to describe it to me, he said that unless he was told it was blowfish, he wouldn't be able to tell, except that the meat is tough.

I ate alligator meat once, and it was damn tough. Maybe there's a reason why we don't normally eat these animals: they can kill us back, and they're not so tasty to begin with. Almost nobody dies though from blowfish if handled by a certified chef -- most deaths occur from people trying to slice the fish at home after buying it from a unscrupulous purveyor.

Unfortunately I didn't get a tasting to form a strong opinion on blowfish (my wallet is not that deep), but you can read my review of their lunch service and find the contact info here.

My busier-than-usual Spring Break is all but over with. Here's a brief update.

The ICMC went off much better than it looked like it was going to. This was my first of a three-year stint as Student Activities Director for the Indiana section of the MAA, and while my predecessor was really great an answering my questions about how to organize the ICMC, he could only answer the questions I could think of, and the un-thought-of questions were starting to pile up at an exponential pace the week before the contest. But with the generous help of Mike Axtell, who -- sadly -- is leaving the Indiana section for a new position in Minnesota, all the logistics went off just fine and we had no major incidents. Kudos to the Purdue, Rose-Hulman, and Taylor teams who finished first, second, and third respectively.

That was last weekend. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week I had a very nice time at Benedictine University near Chicago as the guest speaker to the Math Club and to Manu Kaur's topics course in cryptology. I gave a talk to the Math Club on cryptology in general -- 50 minutes to cover the whole subject! -- and despite some technical difficulties, the talk went reasonably well. There were close to 75-80 people in the audience! Then, the next day, I gave a talk on the Digital Signature Algorithm to the crypto class. In between, I got the rare opportunity to talk shop with Prof. Kaur on cryptography, and I also got a very nice tour of nearby Naperville, which is really quite lovely. (Not what I expected for Chicagoland suburbia.)

Benedictine has a fine department, and I was especially impressed by their students. To have close to 80 students show up in the middle of the day for a Math Club ta,lk at a school of under 3,000 students, is really amazing, and I got some very good questions after the talk. Following the digital signatures talk, one student asked me a really insightful question about Blowfish and SSL encryption; not only was this an undergrad asking the question, he was an undergrad chemistry major. And everywhere you looked, students were working on things -- the science labs in particular seemed to be full every moment I was there.

Special treat for me: I got to spend the night in the extraordinary St. Procopius Abbey amongst the Benedictine monks. I've been reading Thomas Merton and the like for a long time, and the monastic life has been a guiding force in my Christian experience ever since I became a Christian, but until this week I had never actually gotten to experience monastic life firsthand. The abbey itself is breathtaking, with its Edward Dart-designed architecture combining soaring vertical spaces with hidden rooms for prayer and meditation, with a common thread of simplicity and silence throughout. I'm considering making a longer retreat there sometime soon. Something about the kindness, simplicity, and warmth of the abbey and the monks who live there follows one home from a place like this, and I could certainly use more of that.

So I'm wrapping up break doing the stay-at-home dad thing, having stayed with the girls for the last couple of days and spending the weekend doing the same before getting back to work on Monday. Ironically, this semester I made the conscious choice at the beginning not to emphasize scholarship so much but focus almost all my energies on teaching, but I ended up with one of the busiest semesters I've had scholarship-wise in a long time, mostly stuff that I have done or wrapped up this week! Now to finish off those pesky last five weeks of the semester.
