You can download the necessary Earth Connector plugin for Revit here at <a href="http://www.avatech.com/web/revitutilities/" target="_blank">Avatech's website</a>.</p>
<p>Earth Connector is part of the Avatech Revit Utilities which are applications developed by Avatech’s Software Development Solutions group. These utilities have been upgraded for the Autodesk Revit 2009 family of products, with great new features that work with your 2008 version software too.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Finally - I've been using a 64-bit OS (XP) for over a year now and with each release of Revit Architecture i've been hoping that it will ship with full support for a 64-bit system and finally today Autodesk has announced just that - Thank you!</p>
<p>This marks the company's first venture into 64-bit BIM applications and applies to Revit Architecture 2009, Revit Structure 2009 and Revit MEP 2009.</p>
<p>The English language versions of new 64-bit Revit software applications are available now to existing Revit Architecture 2009, Revit Structure 2009 and Revit MEP 2009 subscribers via the online Subscription Center. The 64-bit software will release in other languages at a later date. </p>

<description><![CDATA[Ja så har man varit på &#8220;charetrsemester&#8221; på Åland med båt hotell och trevlig dag p]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ja så har man varit på "charetrsemester" på Åland med båt hotell och trevlig dag på Hundutställning. Första gången på jag vet inte när - som jag och melker fick åka någonstans utan barnen. Så pålördagens förmiddag, packade ungar och packning in för EN natt hos farföräldrarna - man kunde tro att de skulle vara borta i en månad! Man packar ju för alla " iafallatts" som kan dyka upp :)</p>
<p>Sedan bar det av till Grisslehamn där vi mötte upp Paula, Sofie och Sanna med deras pälsklingar Sannas Saffran (Rhodesian ridgeback), Sofies harley (Basenji) och Paulas April (Shiba). Så vi alla kunde ta färjan över. Jag blir lätt åksjuk så jag var lite orolig, men jag klarade överfärden bra *phu*</p>
<p>Så på kvällen var det champagne och god middag i trevligt sällskap och preparering inför söndagens tävlingar.</p>
<p>Först ut var Harley av våra raser som tog BIR med CACIB - Grattis! sedan efter lång väntan så fick man börja förbereda sig för att mina tjejer skulle in i ringen. Jag vill ju helst inte visa själv då jag vet att jag är väldigt ojämn när det gäller att visa Saga och jag hoppades ju på att hon skulle få Certet..</p>
<p>Som tur var dök Oona upp, så jag frågade henne om hon ville visa Saga åt mig och hon sa ja - Tack så jättemycket! det är guld värt! Oona visade Saga jättefint och Saga ansträngde sig inte speciellt när man skulle visa sitt trav ;) så Domaren tyckte att Saga bara var en ok tjej så hon fick en slät etta - jättetrist men så är livet ..  För mig är hon min superstar och det är huvudsaken!! :)</p>
<p>Enya visades galant av Sofie och de tog Exellent i championklass med jättefin kritik! så hon fick möta öppentiken som vann över Saga och där gick öppen tiken med det längsta strået så tyvärr fick vi inte CACIB för Enya heller. dan sjönk ett par steg och man blev väl lite halvdan i humöret. Men så är det i livet bara ta nya tag. Jag vet ju att Enya är en väldigt bra tik, hon har flera championat så det är bara att jaga vidare efter sista CACIB för Int. CH!</p>
<p>Därefter så var det att springa mellan två ringar då April och Saffran var inne samtidigt :) och de avlutade bedömningarna bättre! Saffisen blev BIM med CERT och CACIB och ApRIl Blev BIR med CERT och CACIB och FIN.CH! (Saffran är bara 19 mån så hon är för ung för championatet)</p>
<p>Nu var det att vänta till gruppfinalerna och även Juniorhandling eftersom Oona frågade om hon fick ta en av mina tjejer till Handlingfinalen. Vi valde Enya eftersom hon är lite roligare och piggare att visa. Oona gjorde det jättebra och blev kvar i utgallringen men ej placerad tyvärr. Bra jobbat Oona!!</p>

<p>I gruppfinalerna kämpade både Paula och Sofie allt de kunde och båda två var kvar efter första gallringen. bra jobbat! sedan så tog tävlingen slut för April och Paula, men jag tror inte det gör något för det var en väldigt stor grupp så de kämpade väl. Sofie var kvar i finalgallringen och placerades till sist som BIG2 stort grattis!</p>
<p>BIS på Åland blev en av Kudos Pudeluppfödning en otroligt vacker svart dvärgpudel som visade sig till perfektion - Stort Grattis ( sorry kommer ej ihåg namnet på hunden)</p>
<p>Resan hem var lätsam och trevlig med härligt sällskap på båten - och en väldans massa mer vågor!! - Jag blev naturligtvis sjösjuk/åksjuk så jag stod ute på däck och frös halvt ihjäl, klarade inte av att vara inomhus.. TACK älskade make för att du kommed åksjuketablett, så jag kunde spendera sista timman inomhus- hjälpte jätte bra! :)</p>
<p>Var hemma strax efter 21 och til mina älskade grabbar som svärföräldrarna vänligt nog åkte hem med till oss så vi inte behövde åka och hämta dem sent på natten! :)</p>
<p>Tack Marie och Björn för att ni alltid ställer upp och hjälper oss med barnen - det är guld värt!!</p>

<p>TACK alla underbara vänner som jag tack vare mitt hundintresse har fått äran att lära känna och spendera tid med - ni är alla underbara!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It's been quite a long time since i have written a blog... nothin of d sort i m busy kind a stuffs... but nt in a mood 2 write one 'coz of some issues which i value d most :(   now i m back... back again :) with a blog in d midst of my endterm xams, which i hardly give a damn...</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;">After about a week’s time, I called for the Speakers committee review meeting a couple of days earlier. The situation was similar to the one that Kamal Hassan as George Bush addresses his fellow colleagues. Yes, I started with the same line “Gentleman, we have got a serious problem” (no offence there are 3 girls in my team of 12)... We have got almost all the speakers confirmed but the problem is no confirmation on Chief Guest &#38; Valedictory speaker, the most important factor especially for the PR activity. The worst part of it all is that we don’t have any leads to proceed further. So, the agenda of the meeting completely revolved around how, how, how &#38; how to go about the proceedings.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;">The first point was what sector that we look in for &#38; the next point is how to convert those leads, if generated, in a short span of time (yes... we are left with less than a month’s time). The problem was so intense that everyone in my team was spellbound &#38; has no clue. Finally, after rounds of discussion, we came to a consensus to contact Mr. Athreya for leads &#38; also look in for the other B-school events &#38; see who were the key speakers who have delivered at such conferences.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;">So, the heat has already started building on us... But it all boils down how we don’t get succumb to all these issues thereby organizing the event in a grandeur manner. Things will continue ‘n we are ready 2 come across any kind of issues from now on... it is truly testing times ‘n v need 2 prove our mettle by keeping our head down &#38; working on till we successfully finish the event to walk with our heads high...</p>

<p>Bim Cancelling? Häh? - Okay, ich geb's zu, der Titel ist vielleicht ein bisschen geschwollen, aber ich finde ihn eigentlich ganz passend. Denn darum geht's: Einfach mal die Straßenbahn (= wienerisch „Bim") Straßenbahn sein lassen. Funktioniert natürlich auch mit dem (innerstädtischem) Bus. Mein persönliches Ziel: Immer dann, wenn es nicht gerade wie aus Kübeln schüttet oder ich viele schwere Sachen zu tragen habe, zumindest einmal täglich zumindest eine Straßenbahn-Station „überspringen". Also einfach um eine Haltestelle später einsteigen und somit immer mal wieder eine Strecke zu Fuß gehen. Für das persönliche Bewegungspensum, zum Training der Kondition und... um ein paar Abgase mehr einzuatmen, als Fußgängerin? Ach herrje. Man kann ja auch durch Seitengassen gehen.</p>
<p>Eigentlich habe ich mit dem regelmäßigen Bim Cancelling ja schon im vergangenen Sommersemester angefangen - da bin ich immer wieder die Strecke von der Hauptuni zum Institut für Komparatistik (eine Station) oder vom Institut für Komparatistik zum Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof (zwei Stationen) zu Fuß gegangen und habe dabei auch noch gleich den 9. Wiener Gemeindebezirk besser kennengelernt. Und jetzt werde ich eben auf meinem neuen Weg zur und von der Uni entweder am Anfang oder am Ende eine Station auslassen (jedenfalls dann, wenn ich Zeit genug habe).</p>
<p>Bim (oder Bus) Cancelling. Sehr empfehlenswert für alle, die sich in (Groß-)Städten bewegen.</p>

Eind september, begin oktober gaan sommigen van de werkgroep naar het BIM, Hanne maakt een afspraak met Jonathan (?) de “energie facilitator”. Die zal ons veel concrete info kunnen verstrekken ivm collectieve bewoning / huisvesting, meer bepaald wat de interessantste keuzes zijn. Bedoeling is om hem een aantal concrete vragen voor te schotelen. Vragen die in dit verslagje zijn opgetekend. Op basis van de antwoorden en verdere tips kunnen we een aantal concrete prijsoffertes gaan aanvragen.</span><!--more--></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL">Deze richtprijzen zouden dan in de enquête opgenomen kunnen worden die we iedereen willen gaan voorschotelen tegen de algemene vergadering van 10 oktober. Op die dag zouden we een blauwdruk van de enquête voorleggen en toelichten. Op basis van extra vragen en opmerkingen die er komen, gaan we dan de enquête aanpassen. We willen bij elke vraag de voor- en nadelen schetsen. Nuances zijn belangrijk. De definitieve enquête verschijnt dan op het net. Dat is het plan.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL">Sommigen van het werkgroepje (Dominique, Hanne, Marijke, Janien) gaan naar de beurs over PASSIVE HOUSING 13-14 september in Tour en Taxis.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL">“Bouwteam” is een vzw die cursussen organiseert over ecologisch bouwen. Een cursus op maat va deze groep zou 240 euro kosten. Ze presenteren dan verschillende modules en scenario’s als voorbeeld en spreken over het terugverdieneffect. Lijkt ons slim om aan te vragen vanaf het moment we een pand hebben gevonden.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL">Ivm de premies voor ecologisch verantwoord bouwen werd er gesteld dat veel afhankelijk is van de gemeente. Premies zijn ook afhankelijk van het inkomen en worden meestal individueel berekend (bij de belastingaangifte). Vraag is er zoiets als gemeenschappelijke premies?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NL">Iedereen bracht verslag uit van zijn / haar individuele opzoekingswerk ivm gemeenschappelijke aangelegenheden. Veel zal inderdaad afhangen van het gevonden pand... Maar voor zover het mogelijk is, zijn hier de eerste bevindingen:</span></p>

Sociaal: een wasserette kan ook een ontmoetingsplek zijn.</span></p>

En een systeem waarbij één ieder 1 maal per jaar de ruimte tot zijn beschikking heeft is denkbaar. Optie of noodzaak? Een bewoner die het schema enzo van deze ruimte organiseert is noodzakelijk.</span></p>

<p>Mardi 9 septembre 2008: réunion de l'équipe "Communauté".</p>
<p>Etaient présents: Amber Goethals, Janien, Marijke, Hanne, Lotte Vaes, Lotte De Caluwé et Bart Danckaert.</p>
<p>Généralités:</p>
<p>Nous avons besoin d'information venant d'un spécialiste en écologie et énergie. Fin septembre, début octobre certaines personnes du groupe "Communauté" irons au BIM, et Hanne va prendre rendez-vous avec Jonathan (?), l'"energie facilitator". Il pourra nous fournir de l'information très concrète sur la construction en collectivité/groupe, plus précisement, que seront les bons choix à prendre. Le but est bien sûr de lui poser quelques questions très concrètes. Des questions qui ont été mentionées dans ce compte-rendu. Sur base des réponses et des conseils nous pourrons alors demander des offres de prix très concrètes.</p>
<p>Ces prix indicatifs seront donc repris dans l'enquête que nous présenterons à tout le monde lors de la prochaine réunion du 10 octobre. Ce jour-là nous mettrons à disposition un première version de l'enquête et nous l'expliquerons. Sur base des questions et remarques, nous adapterons l'enquête. Nous voulons lister pour chaque question, les avantages et désavantages. Les nuances seront importantes. L'enquête définitive sera ensuite mise en ligne sur le blog. C'est actuellement le plan.</p>
<p>Certaines personnes du groupe (Dominique, Hanne, Marijke et Janien) sont allés au salon de l'habitation passive le 13 et 14 septembre à Tour &#38; Taxis.</p>
<p>"Bouwteam" est une asblm qui organise des cours sur la construction écologique. Un cours sur mesure coûte quelques € 240,00. Ils présentent alors différents scenari et modèles et expliquent aussi le retour sur investissement. Il nous semble intelligent de faire la demande de conseils à partir du moment on nous aurons trouvé un bâtiment / terrain.</p>
<p>En ce qui concerne les primes pour une construction écologique responsable, cela dépend beaucoup de la commune en question. Les primes dépendent des revenus et sont généralement calculées de manière individuelle (lors de la déclaration fiscale). La question est, y a-t-il quelque chose de similaire comme des primes communes? Chacun avait amené un résumé de ses propres recherches à propos des choses en communs. Beaucoup seront bien sûr écartées</p>
<p>... mais voici déjà quelques pistes:</p>
<p>1. Chauffage et écologie</p>
<p>*Habitation passive? Habitation à faible demande d'énergie?<br />
Pour arriver à une indépendance totale c'est un peu extrême et pas vraiment réalisable, encore plus si nous devons démarrer à</p>
<p>partir d'un bâtiment déjà existant, vieux. Cependant nous opterions quand même pour certains aspects écologiquement</p>
<p>responsables comme retour sur investissement, et si le montant des coûts n'est pas trop conséquent...</p>
<p>*Chaudière solaire<br />
Selon Test-Achats, le retour sur investissements (primes comprises) est dépendant de divers facteurs. 5 à 8 ans nous paraissent</p>
<p>tout à fait raisonnable, 24 un peu trop. Un travail de recherche plus approfondi nous semble nécessaire. Est-ce une option qui</p>
<p>serait seulement pour certains d'entre nous?</p>
<p>*Panneaux solaires<br />
Cela vaut-il la peine pour une construction d'une quarantaine d'unités? Plus de recherche ici aussi.</p>
<p>*Pompe à chaleur<br />
Une installation individuelle avec une source d'eau chaude collective est tout à fait possible. Est-ce pensable pour une telle</p>
<p>construction? Plus de recherche ici aussi.</p>
<p>*Isolation des fenêtres, du sol, des murs extérieurs?<br />
En ce qui concerne les fenêtres, allons-nous vers le minimum requis ou au contraire vers le plus isolant possible. Quelle est la</p>
<p>différence de prix? Recherche nécessaire.</p>
<p>*Ventilation mécanique avec récupération de la chaleur<br />
Cela semble intéressant pour une habitation collective (beaucoup de tuyaux par contre!)</p>
<p>*Chaudière à condensation<br />
Récupération de la chaleur de la vapeur. Haut rendement. Quel est le coût supplémentaire?</p>
<p>*Le gaz semble être tout désigné. C'est le plus intéressant et le plus propre.</p>
<p>*Chauffage central?<br />
Y en a-t-il besoin pour l'ensemble ou 40 différents ou un par étage? Quel est le plus propre?<br />
Combien d'unités sont nécessaires?<br />
Quelle taille de chaudière est-il recommandé?<br />
Placer des tuyaux coûte cher.</p>
<p>*Le chauffage par le sol est très avantageux.<br />
Est-il nécessaire de le placer dans chaque appartement?</p>
<p>2. Possibilités de parking.</p>
<p>Une place de parking hors frais dans Bruxelles coûte entre € 8.000,00 et 15.000,00, dans un box, c'est entre €12.000,00 et</p>
<p>€25.000,00. Une place couverte dans un bâtiment varie entre €14.000,00 à Jette à €25.000,00 à Uccle.<br />
A la Trèfilerie à Laeken, les personnes qui voulaient une place de parking ont payé €9.578,00. Dans ce bâtiment des places au</p>
<p>sous-sol avaient été prévues. Un prix entre €10.000,00 et €15.000,00 semble donc réaliste, dépendant du fait de devoir libérer un</p>
<p>espace spécial ou pas.<br />
Questions:<br />
Que faisons-nous au cas où un bâtiment est trouvé mais sans parking sous-terrain?<br />
Qui veut absolument une place de parking? (demande lors de l'enquête, si plus de 50%, alors un parking doit être prévu)<br />
Remarque: la valeur d'une habitation avec parking à Bruxelles a toujours une valeur appréciable.</p>
<p>3. Laverie</p>
<p>Poids écologique / confort personnel.<br />
Une laverie commune?<br />
Une par étage?<br />
Une par unité?<br />
Une pour 10 unités?<br />
Une laverie payante (pièces) semble le plus logique. Par exemple une machine pour 3 ménages. Chacun paye pour son utilisation.</p>
<p>De telles machines coûtent plus cher mais ont une capacité élargie (7kg) et tiennent plus longtemps. Celles au gaz sont les plus</p>
<p>écologiques. Les sociétés qui livrent de telles machines ne sont pas légion. Du point de vue de la vie social, une laverie est aussi</p>
<p>un endroit de vie et de rencontre.</p>
<p>4. Salle polyvalente</p>
<p>Le prix de location d'une telle salle (répétition, fêtes) à Bruxelles coûte aujourd'hui €150,00 par jour et de €700,00 à €800,00 par</p>
<p>semaine. Cela peut devenir une source de revenus pour les frais communs. Nous pouvons fonctionner avec un prix interne au</p>
<p>groupe et un prix externe. Et il est même possible de penser à prévoir que chacun puisse avoir la salle pour lui une fois par an.<br />
Ceci est une option ou une nécessité? Il peut être intéressant que quelqu'un s'occupe de la salle au sein du groupe.</p>
<p>5. Ascenseurs.</p>
<p>Si on se trouve dans le cas d'une ancienne fabrique des montes charges sont déjà là ou des restes du moins. C'est un gros</p>
<p>avantage. Une ascenseur pour personnes à mobilité réduite coûte environ €30.000,00. Il existe différent contrats pour l'entretien</p>
<p>et la maintenance, en fonction de la marque de l'ascenseur. Par an, nous devons compter un coût moyen de €1.500,00 par an.</p>
<p>6. Partie accessible pour les chaises roulantes.</p>
<p>Est-ce que tout le bâtiment ou une partie seulement doit être accessible?</p>
<p>7. Escalier de secours / Porte coupe-feu</p>
<p>Obligatoire par la loi!</p>
<p>8. Fournisseurs: achats communs.</p>

No wonder I am obsessed towards it. The Sportscom is the committee which takes care of all the sports related activities at BIM and I fortunately happened to be a member of the committee. The freekick tournament for football that started on 23<sup>rd</sup> of august has 8 teams competing for the coveted rolling trophy. This happens to be a coincidence that I am writing the blog on the day of the finals. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;">The tournament began with lots of expectation from our side “THE DEN WARRIORS” (the team which I represented). We were put in a pool where all the goal keepers were known for their credibility and incidentally our forward had the lack of conversion. Of course no wonder, we had one of the strong defences amongst all the teams, only 2 goals conceded from the three matches in the league stage but no goals scored indeed, that is a different story by itself. It all went down till the last match of the pool stage to decide on the lucky 2<sup>nd</sup> place of our pool and it was the 1<sup>st</sup> year team which cruised through with a 1 goal win, thereby dashing our hopes of making it to the semis. <span> </span></span></span></p>

Have used IP messenger to communicate internally while at work but haven’t ever dreamt it could turn out to be a platform for fun &#38; frolic. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Calibri;"><em>Multicasts</em> are the best part of BIM’s life. Yesterday, when everyone was off from the ‘so-called’ hectic midterm exams <em>(normally I don’t give it a damn)</em> and believe, it was raining <em>(in Trichy!!! Oh my goodness it’s a miracle)</em>, the first multicast was from Lingy inviting everyone to play with paper boats in the stagnated rain water. There was the start we were looking for and then, it was all fun asking for sponsorships to issue papers, debate on hair colour of Sollu, popularity of HEMM &#38; GAPSAK (the two most ‘un’wanted groups of BIM), some controversies on sexual orientation, lengthy messages from Syscom members, et al. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Calibri;">There is a say <em>‘Researchers invent things for a purpose but people find different purposes for using it’. </em>That is the case with IP messenger too. Of course it is a means to share useful information which we occasionally do but most of the time, it’s all, movies, songs, snapshots, videos and all those crazy multicasts that rule the messenger. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Calibri;">If there are just 10 people in a place, obviously group formation takes place. When there are more than 200 people, there is no surprise that groups like <em><strong>SANGAM, THE DEN, Y-CLUB, RASKULLS, MISMAKS, LITTLE DEVILS,</strong></em> etc... exists apart from the traditional BIM batch groups. But when it comes to multicast, people just forget which group they belong to and get into the real rhythm of typing provoking messages. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Calibri;">Sometimes, it goes to the other extreme and people lose control of what they speak. One such incident happened last year. The person was provoked and lost his temper uttering the words <em>‘U guys go eat CABLEs’</em>. Though this created controversies among the batches, it incidentally led way to name a cricket team as <em><strong>‘CApaBLE Guyz’</strong></em>. (The capitalized words are of utmost importance). Just really can’t resist praising the guys who beautifully played with word power in forming such an apt team name. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Calibri;">The multicasts will continue in its same spirit irrespective of the exit of batches every year. Coining these memorable moments from BIM of the multicast culture is my pleasure always. Expecting a lot more interesting incidents through multicast before I leave BIM.</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">I am not going to pretend that I know everything about this BUZZ word “BIM” because I don’t think it is that easy to grasp – The ramifications from a business and industry perspective is huge and so multi-faceted. The current enquiry for me is to move beyond any single software/supplier solution. BIM is so much more than a 3d model stuffed with heaps of "possibly useful" data and some sexy schedules. In this blog I will engage in a dialogue of <strong>“What is BIM really and how (as an Industry) do we actually pull this off? </strong>“ in the hope that this debate may lead to the expansion of my (and perhaps your) understanding of BIM beyond some of the surface solutions that are being promoted out there that seem to have little substance when I dig a bit deeper and challenge a typical software salesman’s solution.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Frankly – I’m bored of the conversation that everything should be stored in a 3d model and that schedule exports of quantity take-off’s equates to using "BIM". </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">I guess technically it is - perhaps defined as "small BIM". All I can seem to comprehend from my understanding and research is that the true concept of BIM in the context of industry change is far reaching. I have read journals and definitions of BIM that truly challenge the efficiency of our industry and exposes the depth of data mismanagement and the enormous challenge that lies ahead to address some of the issues. This inefficiency results in project costs blowing out, wastage of resources, materials and the duplication of knowledge multiple times within the life cycle of a project.</span><span style="font-size:10pt;"> (Some statistics claim 7-9 times in a project is the same data recaptured by various Departments and specialists) </span><span style="font-size:10pt;">There must be a better way – and in my opinion it means thinking beyond a single platform solution. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">I am beginning to grapple with the enormous challenge that comprehensive BIM is asking of the Design and Construction Industry and I am curious to see whether egos will be put aside and territories will be merged within our industry in order to accomplish this enormous task. Of course - there is hope. I remain committed to see a solution that provides a sustainable, duplicatable and comprehensive solution that does not result in information overload across Departments and just another version of chaotic Information management.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;">Does anyone have some insight or comments on how we could go about this?</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">I have been in the world of Revit for 6 years now and I am a big fan of the software and still use it at work and in business but I really feel it’s time for me to expand way beyond just Revit. I've been swimming in the world of automated drawings, virtual building masses, live schedules and data base formulations for many years now. But I feel I've only scratched the surface of what is possible... and only had a glimpse of how Systems could change our world and how we function as a whole within the industry, how we communicate and interact and move forward into a more cohesive, streamlined and efficient response to designing, simulating, analysing, building and managing our built environment.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">In my previous posts I have tried to collate some sort of archive of some of the knowledge and experience that I have gained in the Revit arena through Family creation and content and System development that is floating in this head of mine. I have taken the time to list many of my thoughts on Family creation on this blog in the hope that some people may find my notes useful. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">From time to time I will still add a trinket here and there of Revit specific insights but I have set this blog up with a different agenda in mind.... and that is to invite some colleagues, strangers and friends to work with me to elaborate on where BIM ( in the context of an Industry solution) may evolve. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:normal;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">This research project is about looking beyond a firm based solution and I am engaged and intrigued by the enormous challenge that lies for the industry as a whole and how we intend to deal with the information overload and congestion that is already rife in our industry. </span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Attending the Global Institute of Lean Construction 16th annual meeting (IGLC16) in Manchester on July 15th to 18th, the most interesting topic for me was a paper presented by Research Fellow Bhargav Dave of <a href="http://www.salford.ac.uk/" target="_blank">Salford University</a>. The title of the paper was "A critical look at integrating people, process and information systems within the construction sector". The paper was prepared by, in association with Bhargav Dave, Professor Lauri Koskela and Professor Mike Kagioglou from the <a href="http://www.sobe.salford.ac.uk/" target="_blank">School of the Built Environment at Salford University</a> and MsC / Consulting Engineer / External Lecturer of <a href="http://www.dtu.dk/" target="_blank">Danish Technical University </a>,Sven Bertelsen.An interesting conclusion in the paper was a reference to findings of the <a href="http://www.lse.ac.uk/" target="_blank">London School of Economics </a>and <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/" target="_blank">McKinsey</a> regarding the percentage increase in total factor productivity for implementation of IT technology and management practices. Implementation of IT systems alone increased total productivity by a mere 2%, whereas the implementation of management practices contributed to an increase of 8%. Better still a combined implementation of IT technology coupled with improved processes and better people management such as performance management increased total productivity by 20%.</p>
<p>This brings us to a question of companies investing in new ICT in construction, but at the same time not investing in the training of their organization (=people) and implementation of new processes and better practices. The benefits remain minimal. In some cases introduction of new IT systems and spending large sums of money investing in them has resulted in decreased productivity. There should be a better understanding of the interconnection between processes, organization and technology in order to receive full benefits of advanced methods. Companies are willing to invest huge amounts of capital in new IT systems which in reality provide very little value. A closer look should be made regarding the investments and especially the ROI (return on investment). A better overall picture of construction process integration is required when IT investment decisions are made: knowing what IT systems are practicable, how they are to be used to gain full benefit and what it is used for in relation to the overall process of the company.</p>
<p>Building information modeling (BIM) technology has been widely implemented in recent years. BIM has the potential to revolutionize the AEC industry as it provides an advanced tool for project management, data management and information integration. However, the same pitfall exists as in implementation of other IT technology. The full benefits of BIM are not realized unless its implementation is integrated with business process reengineering, compatible project management processes such as lean construction and Last Planner System (LPS), quantity information management (QIM) and training of people and organizations. BIM has tremendous potential, but this potential can be wasted if it is considered that the technology on its own will provide the answers.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A friend across in the US gave me the heads up on a job advert for an <strong>Integrated Construction Manager</strong> at <a href="http://www.mortenson.com/">Mortenson</a> Construction .  What made me look twice at the job specification was the inclusion of all the themes and issues that we discuss today, as being the way forward, themes of virtual design, BIM, integrated management, collaboration and joined up thinking with facilities management. A sign of the times or a glimpse into the future of construction management?</p>

<p>Am Freitag, 11.7. (leider schon ausverkauft) und am Samstag, 12.7.<br />
Am Gaußplatz um 18:30 in den 31 einsteigen und bis Stammersdorf fahren. Soundtrack kommt über die Lautsprecher der Strassenbahn, die Handlung spielt sich draussen ab.<br />
<em>"Gehört nun die Ambulanz mit der Sirene zur Inszenierung? Drüben steht ein Pärchen an der Haltestelle und hält sich fest umschlungen. Da öffnet jemand ein Fenster und schreit heraus – die ganze Welt ist Film."</em> </p>
<p>Sehr schöne Idee. Danke, Oliver Hangl.</p>
<p>Hoffe, das etabliert sich, vielleicht als Zusatzangebot für die letzte Strassenbahn (wo eh jeder seine Station kennt). Dialoge könnten von den Fahrgästen eingesendet werden. </p>

<title><![CDATA[Quantity and Cost Control]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How well are quantities and costs actually monitored and controlled on a construction project? How transparent is the information produced and how it can be verified with ease and accuracy? There are very elaborate project control systems in use, but do they really produce accurate, undisputable information and reports to top management?</p>
<p>A potential client of mine once showed me their project control system which they had worked on for a few months to produce. It looked quite impressive, but looking at it from quantity and cost control point of view, I asked a question: "How can you verify that the quantity information put in to the system is correct?". The response was complete silence.</p>
<p>This brings us to the root of the problem of quantity and cost management.</p>
<p>Let's consider quantity information, as this is the basis for cost management. If we don't control quantities, how can we control costs? This is applicable especially in unit price contracts. Research into cost control comes to the conclusion that cost overflows are not reported until very late in the project.</p>
<p>The accuracy of quantity control and reporting is dependent on the information produced. But how can top management check that the information is correct? Is the information transparent and foolproof? Apparently not, as so often the budget overflows are not realized until it is too late to react to them.</p>
<p>With the development of 3D <strong>building information modeling</strong> (BIM) combined with <strong>quantity information management</strong> (QIM), quantity and cost progress can be monitored and controlled in real-time, with accuracy and with transparency. Discrepancies, cost overflows and problems are seen earlier and steps can be taken to rectify them or at least minimize the consequences.</p>
<p>The key issue is that quantity and cost information is monitored on as-it-happens basis and as-built quantity surveying is done in line with progress on site. Accurate quantity control can provide numerous benefits to the project as it is the basis for cost management, schedule management, procurement, logistics and resourcing. The more accuracy used and more importance given to it, the better the results: a better managed project.</p>

<title><![CDATA[¿Está su Estudio preparado para los tiempos que corren?]]></title>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>¿Su estudio es tan competitivo como podría ser? ¿Con la incorporación del CTE, tiene capacidad para dar respuesta a sus clientes? ¿Está Ud. explotando las ventajas que la tecnología pone a su disposición? Quizás su respuesta es “no”. Ha hecho una inversión importante en el sistema de CAD 2D y además, la situación económica le fuerza a reconsiderar y re-estructurar su estudio, por tanto ¿porqué cambiar a BIM?</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Si se identifica con los comentarios indicados más abajo sería aconsejable hablar con uno de nuestros distribuidores.</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Necesito utilizar varios programas para sacar adelante mis proyectos</span></strong><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Una premisa básica es poder realizar con un solo programa desde los bocetos iniciales hasta el proyecto de ejecución</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Necesito una herramienta que funcione como “pienso”</span></strong><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Los arquitectos necesitan un programa que utilice una terminología de elementos arquitectónicos conocidos (planta, muro, forjado – losa, cubierta, etc.) y cuya gestión sea flexible y fácil de administrar, con herramientas que les sean familiares:capas, combinaciones de capas, vistas pre-determinadas, favoritos, etc y que les permita trabajar en 3D intrínsicamente.</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Los planos de mis proyectos son criticados por falta de coordinación, aún comprobando los planos minuciosamente antes de emitirlos</span></strong><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Mientras que los sistemas de CAD tradicionales necesitan varios ficheros para elaborar un proyecto, lo que conlleva que el usuario tenga que comprobar “manualmente” la consistencia de los cambios, los sistemas BIM actuales se caracterizan por disponer de toda la documentación del proyecto en un fichero central que conteniene el modelo del edificio y que permite coordinar el trabajo de manera intuitiva y consecuente.</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>He pedido proyectos a empresas que utilizan  BIM. Sigo utilizando un sistema de CAD 2D y me preocupa no poder competir en tiempos cambiantes como los que vivimos</span></strong><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>No se puede negar que los tiempos cambian y que es necesario adaptarse. La situación a la que nos enfrentamos que requiere de un enfoque estratégico por tanto, la herramienta que se utilice para realizar proyectos debe ofrecer un ventaja competitiva en cuanto a eficacia, productividad y control para permitirnos ejecutar una reestructuración acertada, tanto para el momento presente que vivimos como para un futuro a medio y largo plazo.</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Debido al CTE me encuentro en una situación en la que me cuesta mucho terminar el proyecto. La compatibilidad de LIDER con mi sistema de CAD 2D es muy laborioso</span></strong><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>El software de CAD con el que trabaja debería responder al CTE y facilitar los cálculos energéticos con LIDER.</span><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Compartir un proyecto entre los miembros del equipo es un verdadero “dolor de cabeza” a la hora de coordinarnos,</span></strong><span> <strong>especialmente cuando colaboramos con otros colegas que no están en la oficina, es muy complejo compartir y coordinar la información</strong></span><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>El software de CAD debería permitir la colaboración entre los miembros del equipo que gestionan el proyecto, incluyendo a los colaboradores externos.</span><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Mis colaboradores me cobran más por sus servicios, porqué  tienen que reintroducir la información para continuar trabajando y luego la coordinación del proyecto es tediosa</span></strong><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Llevamos mucho tiempo utilizando una tecnología que sólo nos permite transmitir información, como cuando enviábamos un fax o planos en papel, pero en versión electrónica. La tecnología debería permitir que todos los profesionales involucrados en el proyecto puedan ver la misma información de manera interactiva y con un lenguaje común, con el objetivo de crear la información una sola vez, de poder transformarla cuando sea necesario, sin tener que repetir, y pudiendo coordinarla directamente en 3D</span><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>La diversidad es esencial en todo, así nos lo enseña la naturaleza. Lo mismo ocurre en el mundo ya sea en lo económico como en lo profesional. Por tanto tiene sentido poder comunicarse con sistemas alternativos que nos brinden los últimos avances y/o nos faciliten nuestra labor. Nuestro programa de CAD debería tener la capacidad de poderse comunicar con la mayor variedad de programas de estructura, mediciones, instalaciones, etc.</span><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>El soporte que recibo de mi distribuidor no llega al nivel que necesito, cuando pido asesoramiento y/o necesito consejo para realizar el proyecto</span></strong><span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>El soporte debería ser aportado por distribuidores que conozcan y entiendan la profesión, profesionales que estén disponibles y  que cuenten con una experiencia contrastable a la horade elaborar proyectos. Sólo así se puede tener la confianza de que cualquier contratiempo será solventado por el distribuidor, no solo porqué pueda haber un fallo sino porqué se podrá contar con consejos apropiados que permitan el desarrollo y crecimiento del Estudio.</span><span></span></p>
