These are some of my favourite covers. The titles are linked to information on each track. The background of many of these songs is worth reading up on, especially the ones where authorship is unknown. Where Did You Sleep Last Night? for example, is over 130 years old. Whiskey In The Jar is even older still, and not by Thin Lizzy.

I've included a link to an mp3 of The Drover's Boy by Ted Egan, as it's arguably the rarest track listed here. The John Williamson version was the first I heard as a child. There's no information regarding it on wikipedia.

Ted Egan, an Australian songwriter and folklorist wrote the song The Drover's Boy in recognition of the many Aboriginal women who worked as drovers in years past. With their hair cut short and breasts flattened with scarves, they were made to conceal their identity and live and work as men did, as Aboriginal women were not permitted to work as drovers. The lyrics highlight the nature of the close, yet hidden relationships that existed between many white men and these Aboriginal women: "They couldn't understand why the drover cried as they buried the drover's boy... They couldn't understand why the drover cut a lock of the dead boy's hair..." (source)

Although he had a Top 30 hit, “Talking Steel,” in 1964, Drake recorded very little on his own. Instead, he used the trademark mellow tone of his steel guitar to strengthen albums by other artists. In addition to working with country artists, including Marty Robbins, Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash, the Louvin Brothers, Dolly Parton, and Ernest Tubb, he pioneered the use of the steel guitar in rock, performing on recordings by Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley. He played on such seminal recordings as Lynn Anderson’s “(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden,” Charlie Rich’s “Behind Closed Doors,” and Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man.” Featured on Dylan’s albums John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, and Self Portrait, Drake also produced and assembled the band for Ringo Starr’s country album, Beaucoups of Blues, and played on George Harrison’s solo debut, All Things Must Pass. The son of a Pentecostal minister, Drake began his career with a group, the Drake Brothers, that he shared with his brothers, one of whom, Jack, went on to play with Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadors for nearly a quarter of a century. Drake’s melodic steel guitar playing made him one of Atlanta’s top young instrumentalists. He joined with future country music superstars Jerry Reed, Doug Kershaw, Roger Miller, and Joe South in a mid-’50s band. Although this group failed to record, it provided Drake with the impetus to move to Nashville in 1959. Drake’s involvement with Elvis Presley, which began in May 1966 when he played on Presley’s How Great Thou Art album, lasted for more than a year and included appearances on the soundtracks of Presley’s films Double Trouble, Clambake, and Speedway. Launching his own record label, First Generation, in the late ’70s, Drake signed Ernest Tubb, who had left MCA after 35 years, and released an album, The Legend and the Legacy, in 1977. Comprised of reworkings of Tubb’s greatest hits, the album included guest appearances by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Paycheck, Charlie Daniels, Conway Twitty, Marty Robbins, Loretta Lynn, Vern Gosdin, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash. Drake occasionally stepped into the spotlight, releasing solo album of pop-gospel standards, Steel Away, and a eponymously titled album that included steel guitar interpretations of Dylan and Beatles tune. - Craig Harris

He can be heard playing alongside the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, the Jackson 5, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and of course, the Beatles, sometimes being credited as "the 5th Beatle." In fact he is one of only two non-Beatles to receive performance credit on any Beatles album - the other being Tony Sheridan. Preston signed to the Beatles' Apple Records in 1969 and began a streak of hits that included "Nothing From Nothing," "Will It Go Round In Circles," and the Grammy winning, "Outta Space." The '70s found Preston very active mostly recording and touring with the Rolling Stones. The '80s however, were a dark time for Preston as he had a few run-ins with the law. He was arrested and convicted of insurance fraud for setting his own house on fire, and in 1991 he was arrested for attacking a prostitute after discovering he was a transvestite and not of legal age. Most of his troubles were likely attributed to his dependency on cocaine and alcohol. He beat those demons in the early '90s and got back to work mostly in a support capacity on the keyboards, working with the likes of Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. Preston had kidney problems throughout his later life, likely due to his substance abuse problems. He received a kidney transplant in 2002. Billy Preston died of kidney failure on June 6, 2006.

Part 1: The Fifth Beatle

Part 1: The Fifth Beatle

Recently I saw keyboardist Billy Preston referred to once again as the Fifth Beatle. I don't know why it's so commonplace to refer to this asshole or that asshole as the FIFTH BEATLE but in most cases it's completely irrational. The candidates:

PETE BEST - The group's drummer in the touring years of the early 1960s before Ringo came along. I would say he is NOT the fifth Beatle simply because he was replaced. If Ringo was the FOURTH BEATLE then Pete Best is just the EX-FOURTH BEATLE.

STUART SUTCLIFFE - A member of the band during the Pete Best days. He was the bassist during a time when John, Paul and George ALL played guitar. When he left the band he was not replaced and the Beatles became a four piece. So I'd say Sutcliffe has a legitimate claim to the title.

BRIAN EPSTEIN - The Beatles' fucking manager from the pre-major label days to the mid-60s when he deceased. A MANAGER IS NOT A GODDAMN BAND MEMBER.

BILLY PRESTON - A fucking keyboardist that was hired to play along with the band on the Let It Be sessions. The band was going for a live sound and didn't want to mess around with overdubs. A hired clown that never toured or contributed songwriting, arrangmenetdnfafas blah blah is not a band member.

GEORGE MARTIN - You know! That guy that produced 90% of everything the Beetlez recorded. The guy that came up with those awesome string and horn arrangements on songs like "Eleanor Rigby" and "I Am The Walrus". The guy that played piano on dozens of Beatles songs. If any asshole is a FIFTH BEATLE, it's this asshole.

Part 2: Session Musicians

While I'm on the topic of the Beatles, it bothers me that it's almost cliche to make jokes about Ringo Starr and how inept he is on the drums and what an overall loser he is. What? Where did this even come from? This really makes no sense and most of the people that propagate these jokes are probably not even very familiar with the source material.

During a very early recording session George Martin was displeased with Ringo and brought in a session guy for one track. A few years later Ringo was stressed out and took a sabbatical. I don't know if these are the foundation for the rumors but they're pretty flimsy. Ringo was perfectly capable and I'd even say he was ideal. His greatest quality was that he didn't think inside of the box. Many of his drumlines were far from straightforward beats.

The fact that anyone even knows who he is and can make fun of his drumming is pretty exceptional. Most people don't even know who the drummers were in bands like The Beach Boys, The Zombies, The Byrdz, etc. What's more, at least Ringo was actually playing the drums on his albums. Many of the bands of this era typically used session musicians for their drumlines and lots of other things.

The Beach Boys, as many people know, reached the point where Brian Wilson recorded all the instrumental tracks with session dudes while the band was on tour and then had the band add vocals when they returned. The Byrds used session guys for practically everything but vocals.

End of rant? Was there a point? I can't remember.

Here is a great live clip of the Beatles performing Let It Be in the studio. On this day in 1970, "Let It Be" went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Paul McCartney released "McCartney", and he announced that he would never again record with John Lennon. Thirty eight years later, Heather Mills is in the news (if you can call what Fox is doing "News") again with her first interview since her divorce from Paul...nothing particularly new or interesting though; http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,350408,00.html

Here is what's important...

I think that is "the fifth Beatle" Billy Preston on the organ at 2:14.

You can also see Yoko Ono at 1:30 on the...I don't know what instrument that is. I think it's the ball and chain.

With the new Martin Scorsese/Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light opening on April 4, comes word

With the new Martin Scorsese/Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light opening on April 4, comes word of another new project focusing on, shall we say, the softer side of Stones lead singer Sir Mick Jagger.

Kat Kramer, daughter of legendary film producer/director Stanley Kramer and goddaughter of Katharine Hepburn, is following in her late father's footsteps, with the production of a reality TV series/documentary titled My Duet with Mick. The documentary, which will air as a webseries later this year, follows Kramer as she tries to get Jagger to perform a duet with her, on a CD titled Gemstone, which she is recording to raise money for music education. For Kramer, who counts herself among Sir Mick's most passionate admirers, the ambitious project is a labor of love.

The concept for My Duet with Mick was inspired by the movie My Date with Drew, in which an ordinary guy persuades actress Drew Barrymore to go on a date with him. My Duet with Mick has already gained much celebrity support, with appearances by Billy Bob Thornton, Spencer Davis, music and radio legend Rodney Bingenheimer (the Mayor of the Sunset Strip) and others.

The album Gemstone features Kramer covering Jagger's solo material, as well as the Stones' "Shine a Light," in her own smooth, sultry style. Each song is performed as a duet with different well-known singer or musician, each of whom has worked with Jagger and/or the Stones. One selection, "Party Doll," includes vocals by the late Billy Preston, and was the last song he recorded, shortly before his untimely death. Also appearing with Kramer on her CD are Bernard Fowler, Ivan Neville, Waddy Wachtel, Terry Reid and many more. Thus far, all songs were produced, arranged and engineered by Jimmy Rip and/or Bernard Fowler, both of whom have worked extensively with Jagger. Samples of some of the songs can be heard at www.katharinekramer.com.

So I just heard that the 5th Beatle died. And I asked, which one?

Turns out it was this one. Neil Aspinall.

And I'm all, Who?

I'm sorry. No disrespect intended for Neil's family and loved ones.

But I must have missed the memo on this guy's 5th Beatle status.

George Martin. Brian Epstein. Stu Sutcliffe. Pete Best. I have even heard Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, Murray the K.

In England there should be two top honors. Knighthood, and 5th-Beatlehood.

(ahem.)

Anyway, check out what Wikipedia has to say about the 5th Beatle. It is quite fascinating. Turns out the Official Top Two 5th Beatles are (were) both guys I'd never heard of.

Segue a lista: Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, King Curtis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Richie Sambora e Red Hot Chili Peppers, além dos Beatles, claro.

Get Back foi creditado à The Beatles with Billy Preston nas paradas inglesas. Daí a história do quinto Beatle.

Adivinha quem estava tocando?

Se tiverem oportunidade, vejam a participação dele no show One More Car, One More Rider do Eric Clapton cantando Will it Go Round in Circles. Genial. Além disso, recomendo algumas músicas: That's the Way God Planned, I Wrote a Simple Song, You are so Beautiful e por aí vai.

Background: All of my children have been breastfed…no bottle…n

Magic...pure magic!

Background: All of my children have been breastfed...no bottle...no pacifier...ever. This was not a decision of mine, since I have no voice on this subject. My wife is very dedicated...end of background.

There are many times when, the youngest is demanding to eat and my wife is performing "another task" that I am unable to perform for her. His demanding to eat is usually in the form of screaming (which he has fully mastered in five weeks) and rooting around trying to "eat" me. He is doing less of the rooting and more of the screaming now because he has figured out that I have never given him food...that well is dry!

During this period my choices are to allow him to scream or try to distract or entertain him in some way.

Music is the key. The song with the most success is Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round In Circles". His eyes pop open wide and he just listens. It is normally followed by some spinning and then dancing by my daughter followed by "DANCE PARTY USA" somewhere in the house.

But...no screaming! Thank you Billy Preston!

Sheryl Crow & Eric Clapton - Merry Christmas Baby (1999)

In my mind, Ray Charles and Eric Clapton have much in common. Two absolute music legends who transcend labels. They both shared the stage with an extraordinary array of performers, often adding an unforgettable quality to much of what they did on stage. Next year I'll do a Ray retrospective, but this year have a look at Clapton's incredible career - arguably the best all-around white blues musician of all time.

The hippie movement was still going strongly, of course (not unlike the Vietnam war), but one momentous event changed its direction to some degree: The Beatles split up. But why is this so important? Surely it would take years to find out. Well it really only takes a few spins of Abbey Road.

Abbey Road, for those not in the know, was the last album recorded by the group (Let it Be was recorded earlier, despite being released later), although it isn't exactly correct to say "by the group." This album contains neither the spiritual hymnage of George Harrison, nor the Warholesque experimentality so thoroughly explored by John Lennon (well if you ignore those eight minutes of "I want you" at least). Paul McCartney seems to have taken control, which explains why it sounds so much like a Paul McCartney solo album, except ironically with Lennon's "Come Together": Both the start and peak of blues pop. Actually, the most ironic thing is that the best songs on this album were penned by neither of them, but by the formerly-ever-so-quiet George Harrison.

The first side, for anyone listening on a vinyl record at least, is the more important. In addition to those two tracks already mentioned, there is "Something", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", "Oh! Darling", and of course, most importantly, "Octopus' Garden". None of these six songs lack in originality, and they certainly don't lack in enjoyability (barring the extraneous seven minutes of "I want you" of course). There's a lot of variety in these songs, which is precisely The Beatles' strength (along with being able to make just about anything groovy).

The second side though, is something of a disappointment, compared to the first at least. It begins with "Here comes the Sun", which is "Octopus' Garden"'s biggest competition really. But this leads into McCartney's big concept idea: The Abbey Road Medley. This is a loose collection of nine songs (which were pretty much just ripped from Let it be), which come together, if you must, to become absolutely nothing worth listening to. Sure, it sounds fine; it's just that it isn't really necessary for anything.

Which really just about sums up the whole album. This showcases all the Beatles' talents, but not in the best way possible. Simply put, there are better Beatles albums out there. What's far more interesting is the individual Beatles' projects. As previously mentioned, this album sounds like a McCartney album more than any other. An interesting note to consider though, is that this is really a seventies album, based off its production qualities, two years before such a thing would be possible, which really isn't all that uncommon for the Beatles.

The true testament to the Beatle's abilities lie in the fact that one of their worst albums is so good. It isn't essential listening, unless you feel the need to listen to every scrap the Beatles made. But then it is interesting to hear what a band which is falling apart can sound like. The term "swan song" was invented for this album. Ultimately it's your decision. It certainly isn't a waste of money to get this album, but there still might be better places to spend it.

Actually, "Her Majesty" is the most brilliant song ever. You know it's true.
