A funny story: some years ago people told me "have you heard Jeff Buckley?" I hadn't. So I went to the recordstore and bought Welcome to the Cruel World. Jeff Buckley, Ben Harper, the names sound alike. Well ,at least in my ears. Coming home I put the disc in my cd player and discovered the mistake. Fortunately I liked it anyway.

Blogando de Zaragoza

É a terceira vez que venho a Zaragoza, mas a primeira desde que se inaugurou a Expo. No final das contas valeu muito a pena e foi bacana ver tudo funcionando apesar de tudo que tem acontecido nas últimas semanas. Não vale a pena lavar roupa suja, mas no fim sei que vai dar tudo certo. Em total temos nossos “huevos” em três cestas, então acho mais fácil que termine bem. Apesar de que tem uma cesta mais pesada em esforço pessoal e outra em $$, no fim acho que vai valer a experiência e dar pra ganhar uns trocos. Também é mais bacana trabalhar na organização que ser peão, então gosto mais ainda.
Também fui na city, porque está bem perto e foi fácil se mexer apesar do calor. Fiquei na casa de Dafne, foi jóia – poderia ser melhor se ela tivesse vindo.

Expo Zaragoza 2008 é um verdadeiro “market place”. Até 15 de setembro isso aqui é o melhor lugar do mundo pra fazer negócios – é como se fosse Nova York: o umbigo do mundo. No trem das 5 voltando pra Barcelona sobravam mulheres e homens de negócios com seus celulares, pdas, blackberries e o escambau. Tinha também uns poucos turistas e os aposentados, que nunca perdem a oportunidade de se mover na hora do rush. Ah, e tinha eu: meio business woman – a Tere diz que eu venho do dark side of the power – meio disfarçada de observadora profissional.

Agora no trem é uma pena que eu não possa me conectar à internet pelo celular e vou ter esperar para postar. Quem sabe muito, porque esta noite vou ao show do Ben Harper. Putz, faz uns cinco anos que tento ir vê-lo. Amanha eu conto como foi.

O show foi super, mega, bacana. Ele tocou mais de duas horas, a banda é o máximo. Quase tiveram que arrancar ele do palco e tocou uma música inédita que vai assim: she drank the last of my spanish red wine... E dedicou pra amiga Vanessa. Vai saber.

Solomon Burke, Hohepriester des Soul, präsentiert sich auf „Like A Fire“ in Bestform – in was auch sonst. Immer mit der Seele auf der Zunge und über einer minimal funkigen Produktion singt er Blues, Folk und Pop, der – fast ausschließlich – speziell für ihn und dieses Album geschrieben wurde.

Allein Eric Claptons eröffnender Titeltrack verzaubert, begeistert und lässt den Hörer versinken in dieser zeitlosen popmusikalischen Perle. Seelenvolle, traurige, tief sumpfig südliche Schönheit - das ist „Like A Fire“. Dennoch mögen nicht alle zehn Songs musikalisch auf allerhöchstem Niveau sein. Keb’ Mos „We Don’t Need It“ fällt nicht aus der Reihe, aber „The Fall“ übertreibt es vielleicht ein wenig und driftet in Richtung Kitsch ab, jedoch ohne dabei wirklich zu enttäuschen. Überhaupt verzeiht der Hörer dies gern, folgt doch im nächsten Augenblick „A Minute To Rest And A Second to Pray“. Geschrieben von Ben Harper und sicher nicht der schlechteste Song aus Harpers Feder. Überhaupt dürften viele der jüngeren Harper-Fans mit Burkes Alben einen für sie bisher möglicherweise unbekannten Schatz entdecken können.

Die jungen Songwriter Keb’ Mo, Ben Harper, Jesse Harris und ihr alter Meister Eric Clapton liefern nicht nur Songs für Burke, sondern erhöhen natürlich mit ihren Namen die Aufmerksamkeit, die „Like A Fire“ erfährt. So unfair diese Aussage sein mag, so unmöglich ist es eigentlich hier, echte Highlights auszumachen. Jesse Harris’ „What Makes Me Think I Was Right“ funky Ballade gegen das gospelig-bluesige „Understanding“ oder das funkige „You and Me“ abwägen zu wollen, wäre unverschämt – oder gar dumm. Da fällt es schon fast schwer festzustellen, dass Claptons „Thank You“ nicht jedem gefallen wird.

Weniger kritisch ist es, das gleiche für das abschließende „If I Give My Heart To You“ zu sagen, fällt es doch in mehrfacher Hinsicht aus dem Rahmen. Zum einen nicht für das Album geschrieben, zum anderen als Barjazz präsentiert, der – zwar perfekt – aber doch eben am besten genau dort – in der Bar – funktioniert. Traumhaft und doch ein Haken am Ende, der überzeugend die Aufmerksamkeit auf die vorhergehenden Songs erhöht.

Das nunmehr zwei Jahre alte „Nashville“ dürfte im Vergleich das bessere Album sein, doch verstecken muss sich „Like A Fire“ nicht. Ein lohnenswerter Genuss ist es auf jeden Fall.

La siguiente fue Excuse Me Mr. en su versión original y no la versión reggea que ya habíamos visto en Madrid. Y es una de las cosas buenas que tiene Ben, reinventa las canciones, las cambia, las mejora y te sorprende. Al terminar este tema, toda la gente empezó (empezamos) a corear su nombre. Al tipo se le veía un poco desconcertado al principio, mirando de izquierda a derecha al público, hasta que vio algo que le hizo reaccionar (creemos que fue una pancarta que sostenía una chica que ponía May I Steal Your Kisses?). Su puso la mano en el corazón y comenzó a mandar saludos a todo el público. Ahí ya lo estaba flipando de verdad con la cantidad de gente que había (más que con Neil Young) y con lo dispuesto que estaba todo el público a que fuera uno de los mejores conciertos del festival.

Aún no repuesto del todo de la emoción, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals tocaron Fight Outta You e In The Colours de su último disco. Toda una muestra de perfección. Le siguieron Watting For You y la versión de Use Me (original de Bill Withers). Esta última, aunque sabiamos que la iba a tocar, no la conocíamos y nos sorprendión muy muy gratamente. Además, en el medio de la canción se pararon y toda la gente otra vez empezaron a corear sus nombre, Ben se acercó a Juan Nelson, le dijo algo y ambos rieron. Estaban alucinados.

Bueno, Ben deja la acústica, le acercan la silla y le traen el weissenborn. Gold To Me puede ser? Sí, lo es. Nos gusta esta canción. "You look like gold to me, and I'm...." Hey, que pasó? Ben se calló en mitad de la frase. Ostrás, se le olvidó la letra. No pasa nada, es la emoción de la noche... Sin parar de tocar la melodía, mira al bateria Oliver Charles y con una simple mirada ya saben que tienen que volver a repetir ese bucle para volver a empezar sin parar de tocar. Venga, empezamos otra vez. "You look like gold to me, and I'm...." Hey! Otra vez? Esta vez se echa para atrás, maldice, y le dice a Oliver "Again!". Leon Mobley se escaralla de la risa mientras sigue tocando los yembés. Venga, una vez más! "You look like gold to me, and I'm not too blind to see. Oh, you look like gold. Said, you look like gold." Ahora sí!

La siguiente fue Welcome To The Cruel World, lenta pero con mucho sentimiento. Ben deja el weissenborn y le traen otra vez la acústica. Por la nota que pone esa es.... Sí!! Diamonds On The Inside! Nosotros ya suponíamos que esta canción venía con sorpresa y así fue, en mitad de la canción salió Donavon Frankenreiter y empezó a tocar con ellos. Incluso cantó una estrofa e hizo con Ben unos cuantos solos. Genial!!

A esta le siguieron Whipping Boy, con un solo de wiessenborn acojonante y Forgiven, muy cañera. Con los primeros toques del yembé de Leon, ya todo el mundo sabía qué canción venía. La gente sacó lo que tenía preparado y el humo empezó a hacer más acto de presencia. Burn One Down. Menudo crack es Leon Mobley. Su solo de yembé fue alucinante y todo el mundo comenzó a saltar.

Siguiente. Ben deja la guitarra y se acerca al micrófono. Sólo puede ser... Black Rain. Me encanta esta canción y no defraudó. Continuó con Better Way, el concierto va in crescento.

Y llegó el momento apoteósico de la noche. Ben Harper tiene una colaboración con una cantante brasileña, Vanessa da Mata, que se llama Boa Sorte / Good Luck. El tema, que lo puedes ver aqui, tiene un parte en portugués, cantada por Vanessa, y una parte en inglés, cantada por Ben. Pues bien, nosotros, en el concierto, digamos que hicimos de Vanessa da Mata. Ben pidió disculpas por su portugués y dijo que estaba intentando mejorarlo y que necesitaba nuestra ayuda. Puso el micrófono de Juan, el de Michael y el de Jason apuntando hacia el público, empezaron a tocar los acordes y ya todo el mundo sabía lo que tenía que hacer. Hemos hecho un dúo (musical) con Ben. Al terminar dijo que éramos los mejores cantantes con los que habia tocado (pelota...) De hecho le gustó tanto, que cuando debería terminar la canción miró a Oliver y le dijo que otra vez más, y repitió la canción. Fue espectacular!!

Y cuando parecía que todos iban al centro del escenario a saludar para marcharse, algo les dijo Ben que volvieron a sus instrumentos. Era evidente. No podían acabar sin tocar With My Own Two Hands. Canción emotiva y con más significado que nunca en los tiempos que corren, hizo que todo el mundo levantara sus manos hacia el cielo y gritara "I can change the world. With my own two hands. Make it a better place. With my own two hands..."

Final emotivo para un concierto impresionante. Saludo desde el centro del escenario de Ben Harper y los Innocent Criminals y hasta la siguiente vez, que esperemos que sea pronto.

Eerste groep van de dag voor mij was Band of Horses in de Pyramid Marquee, degelijke plattelandsrock. Veel nummers kende ik niet (om niet te zeggen allemaal) en heb het optreden dan ook niet helemaal uit gekeken. De tent stond wel vol, al kwam dat wellicht ook door het wisselvallige weer. Vervolgens nog het laatste deel van The Hives meegepikt, waarna ik met een maat van mij een Kriek ging halen. Over The Hives nog dit: energieke rock 'n roll uit Zweden met een knotsgekke zanger. Als het over Zweedse muziek gaat, kan ik meer vertellen over de melodieuze deathmetalband In Flames, die ik drie dagen voor Werchter aanving nog op Graspop aan het werk zag. Zeer goed concert overigens.

Na The Hives Editors gezien. Het was mijn eerste optreden van hun en ik kon het zeer smaken, dankuwel. Een typische festivalset met al de hits maar ook met een nieuw nummer zodat de band zich toch een beetje kon uitleven. Het weer paste goed bij de muziek van Editors, hoorde ik iemand achter mij zeggen. Vervolgens was Kings of Leon aan de beurt maar dat heb ik meer gehoord dan gezien. Na het tweede nummer kreeg ik zo'n ongelooflijke honger dat ik me richting frietkraam begeven heb. Terwijl ik mijn frieten met frikandel (of curryworst, zo u wenst) aan het eten was en een nieuwe Kriek aan het drinken was, hoorde ik o.m. On Call de revue passeren, het enige nummer dat ik kende van de Kings. Ik heb het nl. meer voor de Queens (of the stone age).

Dan was er Ben Harper. De man vloog er meteen in toen hij al zittend een indrukwekkende solo afstak op zijn slide guitar. Harper is verder ook een uitstekend songschrijver en kan ontroeren met zijn stem. Ook vermeldenswaardig: de toch wel vrij kolossale neger-bassist, waar Aertbeliën Sylvain van CPeX een puntje aan kan zuigen (als het op lichaamsgewicht aankomt, tiens). Zijn begeleidingsgroep (die van Harper, niet die van Sylvain) heet nog steeds 'The Innocent Criminals' en ziet er ook nog steeds zo onschuldig uit als iedere andere groep (blues)muzikanten (zeer guilty dus). Harper benadrukte nog dat hij het een eer vond op het festival te mogen spelen met de beste affiche ter wereld. Het is maar wat je een goede affiche noemt natuurlijk. Maar inderdaad, qua headliners was Werchter dit jaar moeilijk te overtreffen: Lenny Kravitz, R.E.M., Chemical Brothers, Soulwax, Mika, Moby, Neil Young, dEUS, Beck, Kaiser Chiefs, Slayer, Underworld, Nightwish, Sigur Ros en Radiohead. Voor ieder wat wils.

Dan ga ik tenslotte over tot de twee hoogtepunten van de dag: Sigur Ros en Radiohead (althans voor mij maar zeker ook voor een hele hoop anderen, buiten degenen die kloegen dat Radiohead en ook andere toppers te gesloten gespeeld hebben). Het is in elk geval muziek voor fijnproevers. Neem Sigur Ros: het hele optreden door brachten ze je naar hogere sferen met hun etherische, hemelse, soms gelukzalige, dan weer nostalgische/melancholische muziek. De zanger Jonsi Birgisson zingt met zo'n passie dat zijn gezicht ervan verkrampt maar het resultaat mag er zijn: het gezang van een eunuch/castraat (niet dat hijzelf een castraat is, wel een homo) waar engelen niets tegen zijn! De IJslanders wisselden singles (Svefn-g-englar, Glosoli, Saeglopur, Hoppipolla, Gobbledigook) af met uitstekende albumtracks (Ny Batteri, Hafsol, Popplagid). Verder kwamen er ook nummers uit het nieuwe album aan bod (naast single Gobbledigook die ik daarnet al vermeldde, ook Vid Spilum Endalaust en Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur). Maar eigenlijk maakt het niet uit wat ze precies spelen. Het is de sfeer die ze oproepen die zo kenmerkend voor hen is. Ze spelen hun muziek met zoveel flair en emotie dat je niets anders kan doen dan aan de grond genageld staan kijken naar deze onwereldse groep (zijn het elfen, engelen?? --> zie Jonsi's oren). Ik sluit deze beschrijving af met de conclusie dat het magistraal was en zeker voor herhaling vatbaar. Tot in Vorst!

Als afsluiter kregen we een al even fantastisch Radiohead voorgeschoteld. Voor mij persoonlijk was Sigur Ros het hoogtepunt en wel omdat ik Radiohead nog niet zo goed ken als Sigur Ros. In feite kan je hen ook helemaal niet zo goed met elkaar vergelijken. Het enige punt van gelijkenis is misschien dat ze beide gewoon onvergelijkbaar zijn. Ongelooflijk origineel, net als Pink Floyd overigens. Maar terug naar Radiohead: de mannen van Oxford verwenden hun fans maar verwaarloosden het klassieke festivalpubliek. Ach ja, who cares about the last group? Het was een goed optreden en daarmee gedaan, punt achter de lijn! Voor een uitgebreide review van hun optreden verwijs ik graag naar Goddeau.

Tot zover mijn eerste blogbericht. Hopelijk komen er snel een heleboel bij!

Não podia ter terminado de forma mais brilhante. O tremendo concerto de Ben Harper and The Inocent Criminals depois do surpreendentemente jovem Neil Young devolveram os pontos perdidos ao festival que no dia anterior baixou a fasquia com concertos demasiado antagónicos e uma prestação abaixo das expectativas da not so alive lenda viva do folk rock. Aliás o que valeu a Bob Dylan foi ter mudado o registo (para um ritmo mais blues) que fez com que a prestação da banda compensasse a voz desfalecida e prestação descaracterizada do senhor. Young esse sim em grande forma e Harper uma presença irrepreensível. O homem que se atreveu a fazer um dueto com o público e teve fenomenal feedback - ou terá sido apenas Good Luck (Boa Sorte)? -, e nos fez estender as mãos e gritar ao rubro que é possível mudar o mundo With our Own To Hands.

Infelizmente do palco secundário pouco vi. É uma gestao complicada de fazer. De Gossip, que actuaram ao mesmo tempo que Neil Young no palco Metro On Stage, só consegui ouvir ao longe os últimos pujantes acordes de Standing in the Way of Control e Cansei de Ser Sexy e Nouvelle Vague nem vê-los. Nem eu nem ninguém, as primeiras adiaram e os segundos tiveram o voo cancelado. Bad luck. Mas mesmo com os percalços o saldo é positivo, acho francamente que o recinto está bem conseguido, bem como a organização. Aliás o voto de quem veio de fora - e foram muitos - é óptimo ao que consta. Francamente o que mais desaponta é mesmo o público. Na última noite até apeteceu lançar um manifesto contra as pessoas que não sabem respeitar quem assiste um concerto e insiste - quais bichos carpinteiros - em mover-se de um lado para o outro. É oficial, o público dos festivais já não é o que era. A música deixou de ser o objecto mais desejado, em troca de brindes, passatempos, telemóveis, fotografias, etc, etc, etc. Enfim, valha-nos quem sabe e aproveita.

Je reviens sur ma première journée aux eurockéennes 2008.  Le premier jour est souvent conditionné par le voyage quand on est pas sur place. On est  à la merci d'un embouteillage. Ca peut remettre en cause, le programme.

Je suis parti avec un ami à partir de Riom (63) pour aller aux eurockéennes près de Belfort.

Le départ a eu lieu à 15h après avoir vérifier de n'avoir rien oublier :

- Pass 3 jours (vaut mieux car sans ça, t'es pas dans la .... une fois sur place)

- la CB (presque aussi indispensable que le pass)

- la Tente ( ca peut toujours le faire pour dormir, puis s'abriter un peu s'il pleut)

- un sac de couchage (les nuits sont fraiches)

-  crème solaire (pout ne pas finir en merguez)

- un brumisateur (sous le cagnard, c'est toujours agréable)

- un Kway ( pour pas finir tremper comme une souche)

- le portable avec son chargeur

- quelques vêtements

Voilà pour l'essentiel, j'avais pris en plus du savon liquide (stérilium), boulle guies pour dormir un peu la nuit.

Je vais pas m'éterniser plus sur ça. Je pense que ca peut juste intéressé quelqu'un qui voudrait faire un festoch cet été.

Pour rallier, Belfort on a mis 5 bonnes heures pour parcourir 500 kms. On est passé par Moulins, Dijon, Besançon, Montbéliard pour finir à Chaux au nord de Belfort qui se trouve à une vingtaine de Kilomètres du ballon d'Alsace.

La circulation était plutôt fluide. Sur l'autoroute, des bahuts qui font la course comme d'habitude.

On est arrivé dans le petit village de Chaux, bien fleuri,juste à coté du camping vers 20h. On a pas trop fait la queue pour trouver une place sur l'immense parking. On a garé la voiture à la lettre U, autant dire qu'on allait devoir marcher. Une fois garer, il a fallu sortir l'atiraille, tente, le sac à dos. On était un peu chargé comme des mulets. Il a fallu remonter tout le parking pour arriver à la hauteur de l'entrée du camping. On se dit qu'il faut bien en chier mais qu'il y a la récompense au bout. Au camping, il a fallu faire la queue pour se faire remettre un bracelet après que le pass fut scanner pour voir si on a une vrai place ;) J'ai eu le bracet numéroté 11429.

Une fois, le bracelet obtenu, il a fallu trouver une place pour planter la tente. Mais au grand desespoir, les places étaient chères.  Plus on avançait dans le camping, plus les tentes étaient raprochées. Le camping etait gavé de monde. Il faut dire que la capacité du camping est de 12 000 places hors j'avais été numéroté 11429. Finalement, on a trouvé une place pour planter la tente. On s'est dépêché pour la monter. On a un peu galéré. Cela nous a un peu retardé. On est parti du camping pour aller au concert vers 22h.

A l'entrée du camping trois quatres gendarmes faisaient la circulation et nous ont indiqué le chemin à prendre. Il fallait marcher sur la voie ferrée (voir ci-dessus) qui etait censé être le chemin le plus court pour aller aux concerts. Un des gendarmes voyant mon pote avec une bouteille de jaune  qu'il fallait 20 minutes en marchand droit. Il a bien fallu une bonne vingtaine de minutes pour arriver à l'entrée. Il a fallu faire un peu la queue, le temps d'être fouiller (pour voir si on vait pas de bouteilles en vert, ni de couteau). Et nous voilà rentrer.

Une fois sur le site, il fallait trouver la grande scène pour voir Massive Attack, qui avait déjà commencé depuis 50 minutes. Une fois sur la grande scene on a chercher à se rapprocher au maximum pour être dans l'ambiance.  A vrai dire ce fut assez magique d'entendre en live, les chansons de l'album mezanine dont Angel.

Le son était vraiment extraordinaire. J'avais l'impression d'être dans un état de pleinitude et de pur bonheur. La seule chose qu'on peut régretter c'est que Massive Attack sont très impersonnelles. Ils sont dans leur musique mais nous communique pas des émotions. Mais bon ce concert reste magique avec du gros son.

Après le concert de massive, on a pensé aller se restaurer un peu.  Il a fallu galérer pour trouver des jetons. Et oui pour acheter de la boisson, bière ou coca ou de l'eau, il faut payer en jetons. En plus il faut acheter un gobelet consigné . Au final,  j'ai mangé une tartiflette tout en regardant Ben Harper sur la grande scene.

Ce fut assez reposant comme concert : encore un grand moment de musique. Merci Ben

Après on a enchainé avec 'The Gossip' sous le grand chapiteau. C'est de la bonne électro avec du funk et de la soul. La chanteuse n'a pas un physique des plus avantageux. Mais bon, elle assume et assure bien quand elle chante. Elle met bien la patate de quoi tenir eveiller. J'étais pas trop bien placé

Après on est allé voir vers 1h30 de l'électro à la scène : la lodgia. Je me rappelle plus trop du nom du groupe. Au départ on voulait voir Calvin Harris mais on ne trouvait plus la scène de la plage. Puis à un moment j'ai reconnu le son de Calvin Harris. Mon oreille nous a guidé jusqu'à la plage. Un petit gars d'Ecosse qui nous fait de la bonne électro même si on a peut etre déjà entendu.

En tout cas, il a mis le feu à la plage. La musique donnait trop envie de bouger. Pour tenir jusqu'à 3 h 30, il fallait bien ça.

A 3 heures 30, on a pris la direction du camping. Deux options s'offraient à nous : soit prendre à attendre la navette ou soit rentrer à pied par la voie ferrée. Vu la populace, on a préféré choisir la deuxieme option. On etait nombreux à avoir choisi cette option. C'est pas super agréable de marcher sur la voie ferrée la nuit. J'avais bien ma lampe torche pour mettre mes pieds sur les traverses. On a bien mis 30 minutes pour rentré. Une fois au camping, on doit montrer le bracelet pour montrer qu'on est bien inscrit. Ca ne rigole pas. Si t'as pas le bracelet tu rentres pas. Une fois dans le camping, tout le monde crie 'Apéro' 'Apéro' C'est vraiment une bonne ambiance. Ben Harper es un genio de la música capaz de durante diez minutos encandilar a un auditorio repleto sólo con su guitarra y su voz con un público que no se atreve a acompañarlo más que con el susurro, para no turbar ese momento mágico (como si de un concierto de música clásica se tratara), de parir unas canciones con letras poéticas acompañadas de una música sublime. Como sublime también es la banda que le acompaña, los Innocent Criminals: Juan Nelson al bajo; Michael Ward en la guitarra; Jason Yates en los teclados; Oliver Charles en la batería; y Leon Mobley en la percusión.

Son las nueve y media de la noche. Casi no llegamos a tiempo (nos perdimos a los teloneros M-Clan: los problemas de ir desde Valencia un día laborable) y tenemos la pista completamente llena. Así que nos encaminamos hacia las gradas laterales. Nos sentamos y mientras Eric y Julia van a por cerveza para los otros cuatro, la gente empieza a demostrar que tiene ganas de espectáculo. El primero en salir es Juan Nelson que empieza a rasgar su bajo. En breve se le une Oliver Charles con la batería y Leo Mobley con la percusión. SIn solución de continuidad aparecen los otros dos inocentes criminales junto con Ben Harper, que se presenta con un gorro de los Bears, una camisa de manga larga (y hacía mucho calor en el pabellón) y vaqueros. Uno de los temas más antiguos del músico le sirve para introducirse en una noche mágica: es Jah Work. Llega la segunda, otro de sus temas viejos, Excuse me, mister. Cuando acaba éste, ya tenemos las cervezas en la mano y nos duran bien poco pues han de curarnos el calor, el estrés por casi no llegar y la impresión de estar escuchando al genio en directo.

Como es bien sabido, la gira que ha traído por Badalona a Ben Harper (único concierto en nuestro país) es la de su último álbum, Lifeline. Los dos siguientes temas que atacó la banda fueron de dicho disco: Fight outta you y In the colors. Aparte de estos dos, muy correctos y prácticamente sin variación al disco (fueron temas cortos y sin añadidos decorativos), sólo volvería al disco hacia el final del concierto, con la apoteosis de Lifelilne. A continuación, comenzó a rasgar su guitarra con los acordes de Waiting for you y ahí empezó la comunicación con el público que antes sólo se había intuido. Todo el pabellón hizo callar a Ben Harper para corear: "I've been waiting for you / Never found anything else to do / But waiting for you / I've been calling your name / Never found anything else the same / Nothing's the same..." Éste, por su parte, no daba crédito y su emoción le hizo no parar de dar las gracias por lo que estaba viviendo.

Algo que no falta en los conciertos del californiano son las versiones. Esta vez no cayó el Sexual healing de Marvin Gaye, pero sí el Use me de Bill Withers, en el cual la banda desplegó lo mejor de sí mismo para hacernos vibrar. Tras ella, otro de los momentos más esperados, aquél en que el guitarrista coge su butaca, con su inseparable alfombra y se sienta para sostener sobre sus piernas la slide guitar. Con ella interpreta Gold to me. Le sigue Welcome to the cruel world, otra de sus canciones más reivindicativas. Tras esa canción, en uno de los alardes del genio californiano, el público le corea con gritos que responden muy bien al lugar donde nos encontramos (estamos en el Pabellón Olímpico de Badalona, la sede de la Penya, y en el techo están colgadas las camisetas de Margall, de Villacampa y de Jofresa). A duras penas, Ben puede imponerse para comenzar otro de sus grandes temas Diamonds on the inside (lo podéis ver en un vídeo).

Nuevamente, Ben coge la butaca para deleitarnos con Whipping boy y con Forgiven. En la primera se queda en el escenario sólo con Juan al bajo y con Oliver a la batería y la intesidad de la versión que nos ofrece es apoteósica. Todavía me duelen las manos de lo que pude aplaudir al final de la misma. Y es que a partir de aquí la cosa, si cabe aún fue in crescendo. Vemos que Leon abandona su puesto en los teclados con su percusión y ya sabemos que va a sonar Burn one down, otro de los grandes momentos de la noche, una canción de las más bellas de su repertorio en la que Leon se deja las palmas de sus manos de manera increíble. Antes de acabar la primera parte del concierto el grupo siguió subiendo en intensidad: primero fue Black rain, una versión larguísima en la que Ben dejó todo el protagonismo para que el grupo se luciera, especialmente intenso fue el momento de Juan Nelson al bajo. Incluso dentro de esa versión mis acompañantes pudieron constatar que versionaban un tema de los Red Hot Chili Peppers. Antes del merecido descanso, Ben sacó un trípode donde apoyar su guitarra, lo cual sólo podía significar que lo que iba a caer en ese momento era Better way (tema que ha dado título a toda la entrada). Probablemente fue el momento más intenso de la noche (una noche que tuvo muchos). Ya lo cantaba Ben, él cree en la mejor manera de hacer las cosas y lo demuestra con su música.

Seguidamente, los músicos se despiden y abandonan el escenario. Durante los instantes en que están fuera (apenas unos tres minutos) el público no para de pedir su presencia. Finalmente aparece él sólo con su slide y se enfrenta al público. Es el momento en que desgrana su Paris Sunrise #7, que amplía mucho más que en disco, para acometer acto seguido (al igual que sucede en Lifeline) la canción que da nombre a su último disco. El momento es sublime y mágico. Todos los que estamos allí no podemos más que susurrar levemente una canción que hemos oído muchas veces y cuya letra conocemos porque la magia del momento es no perder el mínimo detalle de Ben. Por eso, se pide silencio cuando alguien sube mínimamente su volumen. Ya con la banda nuevamente en escena, llega Another lonely day.

Pero ahí no acaba todo. En ese momento Ben se dirige al público en el parlamento más largo que nos ofrece (una de las mejores cosas de la noche fue el comentario de lo que cada uno de los seis que íbamos habíamos entendido: la mejor de todas fue que la noche anterior paseando por Rusia había visto a un tío correr desnudo; lo sé, quien no estuvo en el concierto no lo puede entender, pero nos reímos mucho). Lo que sí entendimos todos fue la presentación del siguiente tema, que seguro estará en su próximo disco: Spanish red wine. Tuvimos la suerte de ver su debut en directo en Europa y no defraudó este tema con raíces country. Y faltaba el broche final: With my own two hands. Una canción perfecta para una noche muy intensa. No faltaron las manos de los asistentes moviéndose al ritmo de la música y de la letra.

Después de tamaño concierto sólo me queda por decir que deseo que no pasen dos años más hasta que Ben vuelva a actuar por aquí (si fuera en Valencia ya sería la leche, pero si no, volveremos a coger la "fragoneta de malocotones" para vibrar en Badalona (aunque no veamos una sola canasta). With only two days to explore the city, we were keen to get to know the real character of the city away from all the tourist tat, coffee shops and red light district. We lucked out with our B&B owners who wrote down their personal favourite places on a map of the city to send us off with. Check out the highlights below...

The smoking ban had reached the Netherlands just days before we arrived and ironically, the legislation now means that you can still smoke in coffee shops as long as there is no nicotine mixed in with the weed in your spliff.

Barangay B&B

After a fairly gruelling five hour drive, we rocked up to the door of this townhouse, five minutes’ walk from Central Station. Ushered in to an eclectic 'tropically furnished' living room, the owners Godwin and Wimmo sat us down with cold beers to give us the run down on the city. Although very quiet, the road behind ours (Haarlemmerstraat) was full of cool bars, restaurants and shops.

We were given an apartment with two floors - upstairs was a large spacious apartment with a small patio, kitchen and and lounge area. Downstairs, we had two queen sized beds including a four poster snake skin double. Around the room were tropical features, best of all though was the tropical windows giving light to the subterranean room.

De Belhamel

First night, we're tired and it's late and we find this place on recommendation of our new friends at Barangay. They kindly gave us a table despite service being almost over and as our starters arrived, we realised how great this place was. Decorated in an Art Nouveau style, the two tier restaurant is cosy yet stylish with many original features and looks out over the Herengrach canal. We started with elegantly presented dishes of carpaccio, duck liver and calvados blinis and a stunning aubergine, mushroom and gruyere combination before moving on to sharing slices of beef with anise mushrooms, Dutch greenhouse beans, butter potatoes and a cognac-tarragon sauce - all washed down with a soothing bottle of Languedoc.

Stout

Despite having had a late tapas lunch as we toured the streets, canals and markets, when we stopped here on the way home for a quick glass of wine, we were so intrigued by their food we had to try some. Along with a lovely bottle of Riesling, we had their tasting plates of small perfectly presented tuna sashimi, spring rolls, tempure prawns and even a mini fondue with veg and bread to dip into it. Christian, ever wanton for nice grub, also ordered the scallop, fois gras blinis which got the thumbs up.

Du Lac

Having set the bar so high (not to mention emptying our wallets) our first night, and having spent most of the day eating, we went for a *light* meal at the local pub/restaurant/cafe Du Lac on Haarlemmerstraat. A large bar with a late night rock feel, towards the back, the tables become more restaurant-like and the rear garden, a cosy leafy hideaway. After a couple of games of pool and several glasses of local beer, we sat down to our meal of pasta, vegetarian lasagne, salads and lots of chips, ordered from a large varied menu with some pretty reasonable prices.

Tempo Doeloe

An absolute gem of a find, we came across this place with the help of an AA Guidebook and two hours to spare in a part of the city we didn't know. Walking in from another torrential downpour, every table had reserved signs but it was 6 o'clock so we got a table. Our waitress more or less told us to have the rice table - a way of sampling all their signature dishes. A delicious tasting starter of curried goat, crab spring roll and satay pork got us going before they presented us with 18 ramekins of food ranging from mild to extremely hot. A side plate of salad, vegetables and grated coconut was there to help us calm down the power of some of the hotter dishes. As we finished, we reread the guidebook entry and realised that we'd just dined in the one of the best Indonesian eateries in the city. :-)

Our favourite area of the city by far was the Jordaan district where locals sit outside cafes (when it's not pouring with rain), chatting, eating and generally being relaxed. The many canals and small streets here are constantly attention grabbing with people's front rooms in tall townhouses looking more like shop fronts to art galleries that bog standard homes. Definitely a place I would happily live... until I saw the estate agents window and realised it's on par with London prices.

The Paradiso

A change for venue for the Ben Harper gig saw us redirected to an old church like building near the Rijksmuseum. Despite being surround by the likes of Hard Rock Cafe and other touristy bars, the venue retains a historical awe-inspiring majesty. Whether it was the religious undertones of the gig or the ecclesiastical surroundings, the mammoth two and a half hour set was totally absorbing and almost evangelical in this setting.

Van Gogh museum

There's a lot of popular rumours surrounding Van Gogh and his work but despite having studied Art History, I was still in for some surprises here. Things you may not know...

• He taught himself to pain and only painted for about 10 years of his life and in that time created around 2000 works of art including 900 paintings
• Much of his work was completed in 1888
• Despite the cutting his ear off story, he actually only sliced a part of his ear lobe off... but he did shoot himself in the chest a few years later

The markets

We spent a day wandering around various markets including the Sunday flea market, the modern art market and the flower market. Somehow, the chilled browsing really suits Amsterdam and its laid back culture.

Cruising the canals

We bought a day ticket and hopped into the canal cruises which are by far less annoying than sightseeing buses and you get a completely different view of the city when not dodging trams and bikes

Samedi matin, c'est l'apéroooooooo!!! Nos 3 mousquetaires installent la bâche, et le BBQ de la mort (fabriqué des blanches mains d'Olivier), les voisins de la zone de chalandise de 2 mètres viennent prendre l'apéro avec nous... avec mon âme de reportrice, on est allées avec Malika à la chasse aux cadavres ( a comprendre dans les deux sens, les bourrés à 10heures du mat et les bières gratuites hihi).
On rencontre un tas de gens sympas mais aussi antipathique (cf: le vosigien, c'est celui à la petite moustache, torse nu et avec son truc en cuir pour la binouze)... on se fais traiter de mamie car on squatte un groupe de jeunes qui viennent de passer le Bac..... on rencontre Maéva qui nous présente à ses amis. D'ou Malika a rencontré Nico (héhé..... sans commentaires!!)

Moment fort : je vois un mec à poil, "Hé les gens y a un mec à poil" personne bronche... bon tant pis je vas aller une photo...

On rencontre aussi dans la journée Clo et Gersand, Thibo et Sophie nos voisins :-)
On décolle vers 17 heures, en faisant un petit stop chez le SAMU, Biafine oblige, on ressemble à des flamants rose (surtout toi Pascal)...
Abdel est trop motivé, il saute de partout, gueule !!! Et du coup Paco se balade sans chaussures....

De retour à la tente, on dormira pas trop longtemps. A 3 heures du matin, on a eu droit à un concert de Djembé mais c'était encore assez lointain. Puis, le son s'approche, et ne s'arrête plus. Jusqu'à 11 heure du matin, nous avons subi les coups de tam tam. Nos gentils voisins ont décidé de leur confisquer le futs. Silence.... (enfaite ils se sont reliés... gna gna gna)

Il pleut, il fait moche et on doit plier les tentes... snif. Les 3 mousquetaires veulent rentrer, ainsi que Malika.... snif, bon il reste Clo et Gersand :-) On glandouille à la taverne. Faut bien garder ses forces pour Offspring !!On écoute Pete, chanter. Clo pensait qu'il allait annuler son concert... il a fait un effort dis donc!!
Entout cas Offspring c'était de la tuerie!! A part que Dexter il est devenu un peu gras, et qu'il avait une sale coupe... l'ambiance était la, j'ai bien sauté, pogoté dans la boue, dans la fille devant moi (selberschuld), chanté, hurlé et sifflé. Teenage spirit bleibt immer.

Je hais les Dixis Klo et les toillettes turcs!!! Pas de bol quand on est une fille, les mecs ont des urinoires c'est pas juste!!!!!!!!

Y para abrir boca hoy actuarán, entre otros, Galactiva, Gogol Bordello, The Hives y los Rage Against The Machine. Mañana estarán The John Butler Trio y Bob Dylan. Y el sábado, ya con nuestra presencia, será el día grande!!

Braddigan abre el palco Optimus a las 17 horas (hora portuguesa, recuerden, las 18 en Galicia.... ¡pero si estamos en el mismo meridiano!... cosas de la vida. Independencia horaria!! Por pedir...).

A Xavier Rudd le toca a las 18.10 con sus múltiples instrumentos, entre ellos, el didgeridoo, un instrumento de viento que utilizaban ya los aborígenes australianos.

La cosa se pone cada vez más interesante con Donavon Frankenreiter a las 19.50. Este californiano surfero amigo de Jack Johnson intentará crea el ambiente necesario para recibir a lo que nos viene despues. Berto y Wladi, que ya lo vieron en el Sudoeste, dicen que en directo gana.

Y a partir de aquí llega lo grande. Primero el mítico Neil Young a las 21.40, que viene a Lisboa tras su apoteósico paso por el ¿Rock? In ¿Rio? de Madrid. La primera (y última) vez que lo vimos fue en el primer día del festival Vilar de Mouros del 2001. Aquel viernes noche llovía, y el tipo se tiró casi 3 horas alargando las canciones hasta el infinito. Al principio molaba, pero claro, llevábamos de pie unas 5 horas, ya que habíamos visto dos grupos antes y a Beck (impresionante concierto) que duró unas 2 horas y media. Llovía y estábamos cansados, pero aún así fue genial. Esta vez espero que sea incluso mejor!!

Por aquel entonces, en Vilar de Mouros del 2001, al día siguiente de Neil vimos a un tipo que tocaba una guitarra puesta en las rodilla y que fue capaz de crear un ambiente tan acojonantemente bueno, que todos los que estábamos ahí quedamos entusiasmado. Ahí fue donde surgió todo. El sábado a las 00.10, y por cuarta vez (para Berto será la quinta... menudo friki :P ), veremos a Ben Harper And The Innocent Criminals.

Se puede pedir más a un festival? Sí, una cosa más... Pero otra vez será.

Hoy toca en Barcelona con M-Clan, esperemos que coja fuerzas y energías para darlo todo en Lisboa!! Hace 4 días, en el 02 Wireless Festival de Londres, mientras tocaba un acústico, el cata se debió aburrir en el escenario y de repente saltó las barreras y se puso a tocar en medio del público... Quien pudiera haber estado ahí.....

Bueno, pues a ver que tal lo hace. Ya os contaré. Mientras, disfrutad de esto:

Si buscamos un poco por esa misma web, podemos encontrar otros conciertos interesantes como The Black Crowes o John Butler Trio, o una radio on-line con diferentes emisoras (por ejemplo, ahora mismo está sonando Sabotage de The Beastie Boys, no es Intergalactic pero bueno... ).

Y por cierto, ya que estoy aqui, decir que mañana tambien podremos escuchar a Gomez en directo en el festival Petrillo Band Shell de Milwaukee a las 6pm hora de allá... luego entonces, ya que en Chicago hay -7 horas de diferencia... aquí han de ser.... la una de la madrugada? Sí, creo que sí.

El concierto lo retransmitirá la emisora de radio WXRT. Pues nada más, a disfrutarlo pues!!!

I'm going to try every week to recap some of my thoughts about some of the artists I listened to. Since I started back in April I've made it about half way through the Bs. We've got some catching up to do (Note that bands I actually really like, I've listened to most, if not all of their albums since I got my new computer and new iTunes library set up in the fall of 2006).

A.C. Newman - I guess I never really put it together that the main guy from the New Pornographers would release a solo record that sounded a lot like his songs from the NP records.

AC/DC - I still haven't found a compelling argument that I need any full albums besides Back in Black.

Aerosmith - I listened to Toys In The Attic and was less interested than I remember being when I first heard it when I was in eighth grade.  I'll probably just keep the Greatest Hits and the album length versions of the singles.

Aimee Mann - She has lots of pretty songs.  @#%&*! Smilers (her newest album) is pretty great, as well.

Al Green - Falling into the category of "Music that I cannot relate to on any level for a variety of reasons, yet I still love it."

Alcest - Amazing French black metal/post-rock/shoegaze stuff.

Alice In Chains - They have a lot of songs that sound the same.  That sound is what I assume doing heroin feels like.  Still, they do have some great songs like "Would?" and "Man In The Box."  Dirt will probably stick around.

Alison Krauss & Union Station - I am a sucker for this stuff.  Good thing I don't know anyone that actually likes real bluegrass because they would hate me for enjoying people like Alison Krauss and Nickel Creek so much.

Alkaline Trio - Goddamnit! is such a great album.  I think the downward slide of this band started when their songs began to be about dark stuff like Satan and dying instead of just being drunk all the time and brokenhearted.

Amy Millan - I love Broken Social Scene, I like Stars a lot, but her solo album is just boring.

Amy Winehouse - I really like certain songs of hers, but I really dislike just as many.  The public persona doesn't help much either.

Andrew Bird - It is hard to find a weak spot in his discography, but at the same time, I always feel like there is this distance between me and the song that makes it hard to really connect with any of it.

Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet.  You don't need anything else.

At The Drive-In - This blew my mind as a thirteen-year-old.  Still does.  Mars Volta?  Not so much.

The Band - Most bands have better musicians than songs.  The Band has better songs.  I should probably check out more than their first two albums.

Band Of Horses - I don't know if I would have any use for Band of Horses if My Morning Jacket was still doing the same thing they were about five years ago, but BoH does it pretty well.

Barenaked Ladies - Maybe the closest thing to a guilty pleasure so far, even though I don't really like or believe in that term.  When I first started listening to them around the time "One Week" came out in 1998, I gravitated towards the funny songs.  Now, for the most part, those don't hold much appeal, but they have some really powerful serious songs (OK, as serious as a band named "Barenaked Ladies" can get) like "Jane" and "What A Good Boy."  Rock Spectacle is probably the best place to start.

Be Your Own Pet - In theory, I love this band.  In execution, it isn't as effective.

The Beach Boys - I need to figure out where to go after Best Ofs and Pet Sounds.  It doesn't help that I always get hung up on how amazing Pet Sounds is that I obsess over it and don't even want to hear anything else.

Beastie Boys - I cannot imagine any reason why a female would enjoy this band.  Everything appealing about Beastie Boys seems to be the complete opposite of everything I know about women.

The Beatles - What?  Do you really think this is the first time I've listened to this band?  I've heard all of their albums so many times that I can probably recreate each one in my head perfectly, so you can understand why I might not listen to them on my computer that often.  All of them are great, except for maybe Magical Mystery Tour, which I know isn't actually an official full album, and it has a bunch of amazing songs.  It is just that it doesn't work as an "album."

Beck - I listened to Mellow Gold for the first time.  Other than "Loser," I'm deleting that album.  After that, however, I'm a big fan of pretty much everything else, especially Midnite Vultures.  I don't care that some people say that is when Beck stopped being sincere, when you make as funky of an album as that, you can get away with a lot.

Belle & Sebastian - I actually had not heard much, if any of their early releases.  Wow.  Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister really blew me away.

Ben Folds Five/Ben Folds - I got really into Ben Folds around sophomore year of high school.  I loved, and still do love, most of everything that he and Ben Folds Five released up to that point.  For some reason, bad luck or maybe just black magic, outside of a few songs, nothing he has released since then has held my interest for more than a few weeks.  I'm not expecting this to change in the future.  Sorry, Ben.  We'll always have "Underground."

Ben Harper - This is another artist kind of like Andrew Bird, where there is a consistency between all of his releases, yet there is still something that prevents it from connecting on that next level with me.  Diamonds On The Inside has come the closest and is one of the few albums that I can relate to a specific point in my life where it seemed to be "our album" with everyone I knew.

Ben Kweller - Sha Sha is awesome. On My Way, not so much. Ben Kweller? Return to form.

Better Than Ezra - While I was listening to Deluxe, I thought, "Wow, how awesome are these first two songs ("In The Blood" and "Good")."  Then I forgot how horrible the rest of the album is.  For some reason I had their complete discography on my computer.  Yeah, I got rid of everything other than those two songs before I even listened to the rest.

Beulah - My friend Brian told me to listen to this band about four or five years ago.  I finally did about a week ago.  "Popular Mechanics For Lovers" is probably the best song on The Coast Is Never Clear.

Big Black - This is cool.  I haven't yet figured out if I actually really like it, but I know that it is cool.

Billy Bragg - This guy really gets a boner when talking about fascism, doesn't he?  Beyond the first two or three Billy Bragg releases, which I think are all amazing, I found myself being much more into the songs about relationships than those about the politics of England in 1990.
