Always one for causing a stir, Banksy has been doing just that while visiting New York City. After completing two large building-sized murals, the renowned graffiti artist has now created a storefront that is, in actuality, a fully-interactive art exhibition. “The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill“, located at 89 7th Avenue between W 4th and Bleeker, shows off Banksy’s penchant for the bizarre. With creepy animatronic animals and oddities at every turn, this is definitely a unique, must-see exhibit that will both disturb and amaze you. If you live or are visiting New York, make sure to take a look before the shop closes for good on October 31st

From outside my flat, there are four different Starbucks shops within a 10-minute walk. And that's just the ones I know about.

I learned last week that there are two Starbucks literally around the corner from eachother. The difference? One is open on Sunday and the other is not.

It reminded me of home because there are three Starbucks at one corner in Rochester. One is a proper shop, one is in a Target store, and other is in a Barnes & Noble. They're all basically at the same street corner. It doesn't bother me per se because I love me some Starbucks; it just seems like a bit of overkill.

The incredible number of Starbucks here in Clerkenwell led me to believe that it was the same across much of London. Yesterday I learned this was not the case.

Eager for some adventure, I decided to venture into Camden Town. This city is significant because, among other things, it's recognized as being the home of Britpop in the 90s.

It was more or less what I had expected. Very busy. Filled with open-air shops and strange looking people. It seems that in addition to being home to the Britpop movement, it also has considerable history in the Goth and punk subcultures in London.

The surprise from the trip was seeing a Banksy mural in person. It had been there a while, but still looked more or less the same.

[caption id="attachment_33" align="alignleft" width="224" caption="Guerilla artist Banksy left his mark in Camden."][/caption]

I didn't hang around long; it was getting dark and I didn't know what else to do. I'd definitely like to go back again soon to look around some more of the shops. Plus there are some good gigs going on there. One of the open-air shops I wandered into felt never-ending. Tiny pathways for people to move, and merchandise coming at you from both sides.

I came home, bought some more tortilla wraps, and made some dinner. Then someone came with glorious news: We can open our windows all the way! Previously the windows in the flat only opened partially. They have locks on them which prevented them from opening any more. As I write this, my window is completely open and I am experiencing a fantastic breeze.

[caption id="attachment_34" align="alignright" width="202" caption="The window is open and it is glorious."][/caption]

Speaking of windows... looking out of mine is kind of strange sometimes. Directly across from my window is a office building of some kind. And at the top of that office building is an outdoor walk-out where employees can have a seat, smoke, use their phones, and in general just be creepers.

[caption id="attachment_35" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Where the creepers hang out."][/caption]

Other than the creepers and the strange window situation, my living situation is pretty ideal. I like all of my flatmates and my room is beginning to feel more like "mine" each day. Now all that's missing are posters. These white walls are driving me mad. I have two "posters" up right now. One of them is the other side of a club advert; and the other is this small square poster that I bought at the fresher's fair.

It still feels strange when I say that I live in London.

But I do.

Nope, still strange.

Just finished a few pieces of propaganda (advertizment) for the website. The Do Not Conform is a brand new design (thanks Banksy for the inspiration) but the Money, Power! Respect? has been around for a minute, but never quite worked out as a design. It was inspired by the song of the same name by the Lox, later redone by lil' Kim. I think (hope) it has finally come together as a design. Just goes to show We have to constantly be working on that stuff ya'll, That's part of what the "Dig Deeper" tag line for the company is all about. Same as the popular "Do Work, Son" is now, only ours goes a little deeper... Oh, I'm so punny!

I though his stuff was kind of brilliant, and for lack of his work in my sad excuse of a town, i began to flip through his website pretty religiously. And now he's in the US! for good! sort of! A bunch of his murals (all featuring giant rats, have appeared around Lower Manhattan, and now there is a permanent(?) piece at 89 Seventh Avenue South (near Bleecker Street).

Banksy is one of my favorite artists by far, his smart thought provoking street art has been at the top of the game for a while now and he continues to expand and take his craft to new levels all while being a man of the shadows... his recent visit to NYC has left the city with a few pieces including a Banksy pet store... you have to check it out, from chicken nuggets to fish sticks swimming around in bowls hes once again killed it...

Banksy.

This is on the Obey level of creative non traditional graffiti taken to a whole new level. In one of his books Banksy talks about how he wrote but couldn't keep up so he just made stencils instead.I don't know how he does these stencils as big as they are without getting seen carrying the stencil. But the motto of a graffiti writer is cool, calm, and collective so I'm sure he finds creative Espo style ways to accomplish his goals of spreading his art. He doesnt' try to just get his name up though. He spreads his views on society on society.

paul d. miller says in his book “rhythm science” that “the 21st century started like a bad cut

paul d. miller says in his book “rhythm science” that “the 21st century started like a bad cut-up video: too much of everything all the time.”

tracing the progression of art in the 20th century from an age of mechanical reproduction to dada, to bauhaus and happenings, a clear train of thought and innovation is seen throughout each movement. each movement brought with it ideals that can still be traced in contemporary society.

just recently, banksy set up an exhibition in new york city that is very reminiscent of the first happenings such as claes oldenburg’s “store.”

banksy’s exhibit deals primarily with exhibiting a pet store through the eyes of society. his approaches are grounded in history and theory and his end product is an absolute masterpiece. click here to learn more.

however, keeping in mind paul d. miller’s above quote, it’s hard to say that any history or theory of the 21st century has been developed that allows for a solid base to anything, especially concerning art. innovations are being made in technology, but it’s with the idea of persistently doing too of much of everything all the time.

in his book, “rhythm science” dj spooky (paul d. miller) says “future generations won’t have a “dependence” on technology. They will have technology as a core aspect of their existence – as much as the languages we speak, the air we breathe and the food that we eat are all aspects of technology.”

banksy’s exhibit addresses these issues, especially presenting technologies overwhelming presence even in the lives of animals.

when discussing language, miller states that the “replication as differentiated from mere reproduction... derived from ‘reply’: the copies transcend the original.”

our thoughts blur, our ideas blur, and suddenly in this age of mechanical reproduction, there is so much going on that what we produce is just a collage of previous movements or ideas set up by others.

so what’s new in our time? what can we offer that’s new? how do we “remix” what we know; hack it... to present something unique to our time so that the sounds don’t blur?

“life is interesting. the writing that gives meaning and some kind of hope to life in this world should be interesting as well.” – paul d. miller

banksy’s newest offering to the art world presents something that is an idea re-mixed. as previously discussed, claes oldenburg’s “store” inhabiting 1107 east 2nd street in new york city created a gallery of art for the everyday passerby. what appeared to be your average store from the outside was a shop filled with tiny artifacts and constructed reality to bring the viewer into the piece. every item in the shop was a work of art, and though displayed unlike any gallery had displayed art to this time, it was a new gallery that was “happening.”

banksy’s store presents the same idea of a gallery of art for the everyday passerby. through his use of animatronics and animal cages, the store appears as a regular pet store. however, upon entering, each display is a work of art. each “animal” is another critique on the human condition fusing technology with ideals and presenting a hauntingly honest view on the world we live in.

“is it as simple as flipping open a laptop and joining a wireless network?” poses miller. “plastic, fluid memories run into circuitry and focus our attention on a world where we download ourselves daily. this is a word game of the non-conscious. this is what the idiot tells us, and this is what we reply.”

dj spooky focuses on art through the idea of the digital medium fusing sound, art and writing into life. noting ideas of sound, his love for writing, and the way that the two constantly interact with one another into what is his life. the way that other ideas of art are incorporated into our everyday lives and how everything we listen to, say or do interplays with one another, creating a new language for us; creating our lives.

“all of these are etched on my memory as the starting points for my style of mixing.” – dj spooky.

bombarding us with this idea of too much happening all the time, miller teaches us to differentiate and make this nonsensical mess into something our own: to remix it.

Someone has given the bull on Wall Street a case of blue balls--literally. Maybe I should mention that world-renown graffiti artist Banksy, has been in NYC lately putting up big installations...coincidental? I think not...it seems like his kind of defiance...

I once made an art piece in college called “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Housewife”

I once made an art piece in college called "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Housewife" for a mixed media class I was taking. It consisted of bananas drowning in a lake of jell-o fire, and it was a complete disaster. I think one of my main problems was that I used real bananas and jell-o; also, I didn't seal up the lake bed very well. The whole thing seeped out onto the floor by the time my critique came up.

If only I had had the money and ingenuity then that Banksy is showing with his new installation in New York - the Village Petstore and Charcoal Grill. With the benefit of fake food and robotic technology, he's been able to make fish fingers swimming around in a bowl, little chicken nuggets dipping themselves into barbecue sauce, and a languid leopard skin coat resting in a tree. Of course, my favorite pieces are the bologna logs enjoying sips of mustard as they sun themselves in their cages:

Actually, I think I may have eaten one of these fake hot dogs by accident last night instead of what I ordered at Weeneez, because something in my stomach is doing an awful lot of angry moaning today. I hope the batteries die soon.

"New Yorkers don't care about art, they care about pets. So I'm exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing.
God damn it. Banksy. That son of a bitch. So it's a big cluster-fuck of his work right now in New York City and we've all seen the billion story tall rats (in fact Mr. Spiral himself Ryan Dye showed you one) but now the man has hit me where I live.

This past Monday started out like any other Monday (rolling out of bed, popping a few Advil liqi-gels and making some tea). In the evening I met my wonderful friend Laura for some light strolling 'round my block and dinner. As we made our way south on Seventh Avenue we were stopped in our tracks with the matching exclamation of, "is that a fucking leopard?!" We had found ourselves in front of the "Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill."

Laura promptly whipped out her iPhone like it was a prison shank and we proceeded to google this anomaly. Nothing! And we all know if its not on the internet its not real. However, as of today (Friday) a google search yields 333,000 results.

Banksy has upped the ante and regardless of personal opinion, this is pretty extraordinary. Go check it out on 7th Ave. between west 4th and Bleeker and harass the uniformed staff. And hey you never know, I might be there too. K$

One of our favorite things about what Banksy has done is that the entire show is completely visible to the public both day and night through the store front windows. And unless you're a hard core Banksy fan, or until someone like us tells you, it's absolutely impossible to know that the work has been done by Banksy. There are no paintings or graffiti in the entire space.

Haven't posted anything in a long time...but I thought this one might be worthwile and a good kick off into a new set of posts.

Thanks to a friend (Emmylou) as well as notcot.com I found this great piece of Banksy Art.

A few days ago Banksy opened up a walk-in piece of art. It's a small pet store located at 89 7th Avenue between West 4th and Bleeker Street in the West Village of New York City.

The stores windows and interior are filled with a number of creepy (animatronic) installations, from a rabbit applying make up, to two Chicken McNuggets feasting over some BBQ Sauce, up to a CCTV cam attending to it's little cam baby.

Here is a clip that gives you some more insights into the store...

Nobody knows who patron of the arts, Banksy is.

Some call him the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' of the art world. And he's been at it again.

He's 'opened' the Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill in New York's West Village......

Set in a shopfront that Sweeney Todd would own if he were into animals, a rabbit paints its nails and chicken nuggets with feet feed from a dish of sauce.

Fish fingers swim in a bowl, hot dogs burrow and frolic in terrariums, CCTV cameras look after their young, and a bald, caged, suicidal-looking Tweety swings back and forth in his cage.......

Nothing is up for sale and the shop assistants are actors...

WHO IS BANKSY??????
