What idiot picked this boring dry Elvis song for the Arsenal anthem? Why were the supporters not consulted this? It just happend to dropped on us as our anthem,Well its shite! Its a sad slow song and will never get the fans up for the game. Our home support is pretty quite anyway and this song just adds to the funeral atmosphere.Elvis was overrated and fat anyway!!

I feel we need something a bit more hyper to get fans going. We need something lively that gets the fans buzzing and up for the game in a party atmosphere.

Our members of the forum talked about this in a thread and have come up with this little list of potential replacements for Elvis.

Click on the name of the song for a youtube clip.

Though we strongly advocate eco-friendly roofing systems, Arrowstar Roofing & Construction strongly advises against attempting to plant a large garden atop your roof due to the potential of severe structural damage if work is not performed correctly. However, we found this article interesting (to say the least) from a roofing standpoint, and it does make a few good points. Enjoy!

NAPSI – From starting school-wide recycling plans to cleaning up area parks, today’s students get high marks when it comes to helping the environment. Now a new program may help their grades go through the roof.

The initiative teaches students in grades 6 to 8 about green roofs—a roof that replaces traditional roofing with a living environment of plants and soil.

Among the benefits they offer, green roofs remove pollutants from storm water and reduce the amount of water that flows into sewer systems. The plants also store excess carbon from the atmosphere, lower radiant heat in the summer and create habitats for local wildlife. Additionally, green roofs provide extra insulation to buildings and last two or three times longer than traditional roofs.

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) runs the program, called “The Roof Is Growing!” It provides a lesson plan, workbook and an online interactive program designed to engage students on how green roofs cool cities, clean the air, create habitats and control storm water.

Funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the initiative is meant to inspire young students to think creatively and use their imaginations as future landscape architects or on any path they choose.

Of course, there are ways by which parents can get kids thinking green at home, too. Try these tips:

Make It Fun

Let your child decorate the recycling bins you have at home as you explain to her what items can and can’t be recycled. You might even arrange for you and your child to tour the area recycling facility.

Take A Walk

Take your child for a walk in the woods to help him gain a greater appreciation of nature. If he has a favorite animal or habitat (deserts, jungles, etc.), encourage him to learn more at the library, at school and online.

Lead By Example

Be sure to recycle and take steps to protect the environment on your own. Setting a good example at home can help build Earth-friendly habits in kids that last a lifetime.

For more information, visit www.asla.org/greenroof.

I am not a wanna-be gangsta white kid, honestly I don't know why that came out of me, but here is my best explanation in the form of a mixtape. It began as mix I was supposed to work out to, but devolved into just a mellow out after work mix that contains many uses of the word "fiddy."

Please listen and enjoy:

1. Black Star - B Boys Will Be Boys

2. Gorillaz (Basically Del) - Rock the House

3. Cunninlyngists - Beautiful Girl

4. Soul Position - Hand Me Downs

5. Brother Ali - Self Taught

6. The Coup - My Favorite Mutiny

7. The Roots - Quills

8. DJ Shadow - The Number Song

9. Kanye West - We Don't Care (hey, shut up, his first album was good)

10. Atmosphere - You

11. A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It?

Sincerely,

I don't get it.

There was a time, around when I was in kingergarten, when people realized that Hip-Hop was not one large animal, but rather, a pack of them, each serving a purpose under the umbrella. Now, it seems, Hip-Hop, in the minds of many of its so-called fans, can only be one or two things. If it's gun talk, it isn't Hip-Hop. If it's dance music, if it's not Boom-Bap, if there are no James Brown Samples, if it's "hipster", if it's dope music, it can't be Hip-Hop. To be totally honest, this isn't all our fault. There was a time when the music stations and channels were as such that if you didn't want to hear gunplay music, you could switch from MTv to The Box, and hear some conscious, enlightened music, and vice versa. Now, certain parts of the music/culture have been so pumped up that we grow to hate on them, in spite of the fact they still do have an important role in the culture and music's space. It's like curling with one arm, and leaving the other alone to atrophy. Both are important, but because a lack of attention, one fails to play the role it should. Does that mean the weak arm should be cut off? Of course not. It's not the arm's fault its owner isn't using it to its full potential. Instead, the owner/user should take the time to review its importance, and even out usage of both arms. That way, not only is he maximizing the weak arm, he's going a long way to make sure he doesn't do permanent damage to the strong arm by overuse. Get it now? All the stuff on the radio, the gunplay, the mysogyny, the beat-driven, lyric lacking dance music, the self indulgence, all have a place in Hip-Hop. They shouldn't be hated, though we should hate the fact that we get much too much of them. The fact that corporate America is sapping them dry of their money making ability, shouldn't take away from the fact that they still have a valuable place in the grand scheme of things. Instead, we as consumers of the Music should support projects that don't get as much shine (Murs, Atmosphere, Killer Mike, Ice Cube, GZA, etc.) until radio catches on and brings the selection we crave. in short: Don't hate, son! just BUY whatchu like, and if we all do, they'll give it to us more frequently.

Apparently, that is only reserved for the bankers on Wall Street to suck us, the common folk, dry. Dry of what exactly? Last time I checked they were not a purple people eaters, but a human being too that relied on the environment to sustain them. Shelter, food, and well you know the capability to live. Yet as with all things we as human beings have grown accustomed too, we look to the dollar to sustain us. Common folk out there, hee-hee, you might be able to burn it for firewood here soon! Ha!

Second, is this an admission to global warming, that other scientists continue to attempt to debunk?? Face it and start now. When you were a kid or even five years ago, a summer was a summer and a winter was a winter, and there was no doubt about how it felt outside. We are beginning to see and feel (back to the five senses again) a totally different atmosphere from this planet we live on.

Onward, The Nature Conservancy and top marine scientists want to actually tackle the “ocean acidification”. How long have we, the apes with no fur, but big brain J, known that our oceans are toxic? Answer: A long time.

(1) Heck, there was just an article out about the trash in our oceans – TONS and the millions of dollars it would take to clean it up. (2) Beach signs during the summer saying “no swimming due to …” (3) Blooms of algae and dead zones – that keep getting bigger.

Guess what? When you see trash – pick it up. When you see a six-pack, plastic holder, un-cut ----cut it up. When you see it needs to be done – do it. There are OBVIOUS, small steps that we can take, without government “action” (due to the inaction that are obvious) to clean up. You start in your own home. That is the most effective way to achieve what has to be done. Demand that your town, your home, your environment – have recycling centers and organize groups to clean up roadside trash. If they will not do it because the budget “cannot allow for it”, go out and start something on your own – BUT do the research first to do it right the first time.

Back on subject, again…Oceans have had the Great Barrier Reef – the Caribbean Reef – and all these other priceless pieces of Natural art, ecosystems, and biodiversity of life screaming for help over a number of years. Read a National Geographic. Animals show intelligence in these places – it is there home! How is it we do not even respect our own? Pardon me. I am upset for our environment. I know that the impacts are far more reaching than what anyone knows right now. So, with that I move forward….

“Two major strategies emerged as the backbone of the Declaration resulting from the workshop:
• Limit fossil fuel emissions - stabilization of atmospheric CO2 is the most logical step to address ocean acidification impacts; and
• Build the resilience of tropical marine ecosystems and communities to maximize their ability to resist and recover from climate change impacts, including ocean acidification.”

While the above is all well and good, we have businesses that do not wish to curb the harmful emissions. We walk the streets and travel to work everyday guys. How are your lungs holding up during the waking hours in a city? Smell a difference in the air? Yuck.

More children and elderly people, with breathing and upper respiratory infections – seems kind of odd doesn’t? How in the word will a bunch of scientists, get the businesses of the World to stop polluting our environments with harmful emissions (otherwise known as greenhouse gases). Please note: I classify greenhouse gases as anything that should not be inhaled into your lungs that will cause your lungs and/or body harm over time.

Ah – Time. Didn’t see the results of that first cigarette did you? But you sure saw a difference after say…five years. Time.

Why must we sit around and talk, talk, talk, about things we knew about twenty years ago? Always with the talk, and limited and/or lack of continual education to the general public. Ever heard an elder person, country person, or farmer, talk about how things use to grow or be? Same thing – different generation that did not learn or listen.

How and where did the alarms go off, but we failed to listen?

It looks like Slug and Ant are back at it again to bring you a music video for their newest single "You". This is a pretty sick music video, it's a great beat and the song has a great feel to it. I love the use of the "tech decks" I remember being somewhere around 13 to 14 years old and that being the obsession. Not to mention that the "tech deck" work in this video is amazing. It also looks like Slug and Ant put on "one hell of a party".

From the World Affairs Brief:
CHEMTRAILS: FINALLY, SOME ANSWERS
Canadian investigative reporter Wil

From the World Affairs Brief:

CHEMTRAILS: FINALLY, SOME ANSWERS

Canadian investigative reporter William Thomas has uncovered, through tenacious and prodigious research, some answers to the mysterious chemtrail issue. Chemtrails are chemical laden vapor trails dispersed at high altitudes by US military tanker aircraft and by some private aircraft under top-secret contracts with the US government. A draft version of Thomas report can be read online at http://www.nexusmagazine.com/chemtrails.html. I don't agree with everything Thomas writes or speculates about, but I will summarize his conclusions and share my analysis of what I think is well founded.
The chemtrail phenomenon has been observed for many years in different parts of the US as well as in other allied nations. These chemtrails are primarily characterized by thick trails of white vapor, which persist for long periods of time, gradually dispersing to cover wide areas of the sky. Let's review some of the major differences between these chemical vapor trails and the normal, harmless condensation trails (contrails) often emitted by aircraft. There are several critical distinguishing characteristics between these two types of emissions: 1) Chemtrails often occur at altitudes and in environmental conditions where normal contrails cannot and do not occur. According to NOAA meteorologist Thomas Schlatter, quoted in the article, At temperatures lower than approx -40 deg F contrails almost always form, regardless of relative humidity. The higher the ambient temperature, the less likely that contrails will form. At temperatures above -40 degrees F, contrails are not expected. The persistence of contrails depends upon temperature, relative humidity, and the vigor of mixing between the exhaust plume and the ambient air. At low temperatures, with high humidity, and with stable temperature stratification (which inhibits vertical mixing of the air), contrails persist for many hours.” 2) Chemtrails also occur at altitudes where contrails occur and thus the two are mixed.
Chemtrails persist for many hours and spread out continuously until wide areas of the sky are covered. Contrails spread out only slightly and evaporate within 10 seconds to several hours, depending on the upper air humidity and temperature. Contrails can persist under exceptional circumstances, so this is not a definitive criteria.
3) Contrails are always pure white and don't exhibit much halo effect. Chemtrails have an oily glint to them, with pronounced rainbow-like color effects (reddish or pinkish tint) as the sun shines through. Some of the best photographic evidence of chemtrails is found at http://www.carnicom.com/contrails.htm Contrails are composed of water vapor combined with a small amount of residue from burned jet fuel. Analysis of chemtrail residues, in contrast, claims to have uncovered a variety of chemicals and other substances, including barium, aluminum oxide, microscopic fibers and oil-based products, none of which are intrinsic to normal jet fuel. Contrails exit directly behind the engines of the aircraft, which produce the moisture. Thus, aircraft will exhibit only 1, 2, 3, or 4 distinct condensation trails, each trailing an engine. Chemtrails, in contrast, are expelled from multiple ports along the entire wing surface, not directly in line with the engines. Once again, see the pictures on www.carnicom.com. These photos are perhaps the most definitive of all chemtrail evidence. Some debunkers use cropped photos of high-G manuevers which gives off aerodynamic condensation from the wing–as a supposed explanation to wing emitted chemtrails. But this is bogus. Aerodynamic condensation doesn't occur in straight and level flight and never leaves a long contrail. It also shows up within inches of the wing trailing edge, unlike chemtrail spraying.
Contrails cannot be shut on and off at will, nor abruptly, as witnesses have seen in numerous sightings of chemical spraying by aircraft. I personally have seen this type of on/off spraying in Utah by two military tankers flying in loose formation. When numerous witnesses called KSL–TV in Salt Lake City to investigate, KSL dutifully parroted the government's official response: that the aircraft was a government contractor flying a Lear jet and doing experiments on ice crystal formation. Baloney! As one of those witnesses, and an experienced pilot, I can tell you those two huge military tanker aircraft were not tiny Lear jets. The government is lying–but at least, in this case, they didn't try to outright deny what hundreds of people were watching, as they usually do. They simply tried to take advantage of public ignorance of aircraft recognition, feeding them a phony but marginally plausible excuse. Aircraft dispersing chemtrails always fly back and forth over a set area, creating circular or zig-zag patterns of vapor in the sky. Often many chemtrail aircraft can be seen in one area, flying in crisscross patterns laying down vapor trails before flying off over the horizon. Large airliners operating under Air Traffic Control fly on set airways and do not make such patterns in the sky. Government representatives have tried to pass off reports of crisscross chemtrail patterns as merely the convergence of airliner contrails at normal air traffic intersections, but this is false. For one thing, almost all airways in the US run in straight lines. Neither do airliners fly in close formation with other aircraft. In addition, chemtrail sightings almost never come close to normal airway intersections, lest they interfere with normal traffic or be observed by other airline passengers.
All legitimate aircraft at high altitudes emitting contrails will be acknowledged by the FAA. Conversely, the existence of aircraft spraying chemicals is always denied by the FAA, under orders from the government. You can be on a cell phone, in real time, reporting the presence of an aircraft overhead to the FAA and they will tell you that no such aircraft exists on their radar screens. They are flat-out lying. It's amazing to me how many military pilots and government ATC controllers can so easily justify these lies. Surely some are aware of the damaging health effects reported on the internet. Occasionally, an honest controller will admit there is a military exercise blocked out for that area. Many have long suspected that the government has been using these airborne chemical sprayings to test dispersal methods for mild forms of biological or chemical warfare. Indeed, chemtrail sightings have long been associated with community-wide illnesses reported in the areas of the sprayings. Thomas himself was involved in a case in Espanola, Ontario, in the spring of 1998. Residents there had been complaining of severe headaches, chronic joint pain, dizziness, sudden extreme fatigue, acute asthma attacks and feverless flu-like symptoms over a 50-square-mile area [which] coincided with what they termed months of spraying by photo-identified US Air Force tanker planes. An expert witness in the case, former Ontarion Provincial Police Officer Ted Simola, described the lingering Xs and numerous white trails, some of which "just ended as" if they had been shut off but remained in the sky, observations consistent with other chemtrail sightings.
On November 18, 1998, the people of Espanola petitioned Parliament, suspecting possible government involvement in these airborne chemical emissions. They called upon Parliament to repeal any law that would permit the dispersal of military chaff or of any cloud-seeding substance whatsoever by domestic or foreign military aircraft without the informed consent of the citizens of Canada thus affected. In response to their petition, the Ministry of Defense eventually replied: It's not us. The government assertion was mostly true: it was not Canadian aircraft, but US Air Force tankers which were conducting the sprayings. Yet the Canadian government was complicit in allowing the US to experiment over Canada.
Thomas did finally get an American ATC controller to talk to him, under conditions of anonymity. The controller works on the US eastern seaboard. Thomas called his contact Deep Sky. Deep Sky confirmed that the chemicals being spread in the exercises were acting as electrolytes, enhancing conductivity of radar and radio waves. Additionally, the spread of the material was actually degrading, not enhancing, ATC radars so there had to be some other purpose behind the sprayings. It is significant that many of the exercises were conducted out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Ohio, which, according to Thomas, has long been deeply engaged in HAARP's electromagnetic warfare program. HAARP is a US government radio wave project in Alaska which could be related to weather modification. HAARP's huge powerful transmitters and arrays of antennas are, according to the official website, designed to heat up the atmosphere above it. Phasing the antennas can skew the heating effect directionally, and may even interact with reflective layers of metal particles in Chemtrails. What is interesting is that HAARP's location is at the 65th parallel, just south of the arctic circle. This position corresponds to the atmospheric boundary where relatively moist southern air moving northward collides with cold arctic air coming south. When these dissimilar air mass meet they rise and form new storm systems. Heating the atmosphere directly under this boundary layer would tend to accelerate storm development. Finally, through a series of questions, Deep Sky confirmed that the US tankers were indeed involved in climate modification experiments.

At this point in the article, Thomas launches into a theory that the reflective clouds are being used to reduce the effects of global warming (Edward Teller's theory). He discusses the Welsback patent, issued in 1994 to Hughes Aircraft, [long involved in government black operations] which involves the use of a reflective blanket of aluminum-laced cloud cover to cool the earth. However, I think Thomas was fed disinformation here. The government often uses phony patents to lead investigators down the wrong trail–especially when dealing with HAARP. Global warming is a fraud. There is no way the US government would engage in this massive a cover-up and risk illness to the US population over a theory with little basis in fact and even less evidence of actual damage. Besides, government sponsored aerosol spraying has been going on before global warming became an issue.

However, the weather modification process is, in my opinion, the best explanation so far as to the widespread use of spraying. The reflective aluminum particles or fibers in the created cloud barriers cause cool spots over normally warm areas, which influence the rise or fall of air masses. These reflective layers may also react with HAARP transmissions in some way. Radio transmissions need reflective layers to channel the energy in specific directions. The creation of sun or radiation shielding may explain why spraying occurs at high altitude, during the daytime, and in cloudless areas–where the reflective shield would be visible and effective for a long time.

None of these characteristics fit a biological or chemical warfare test scenario. If the government was testing delivery methods of biological or chemical agents, it would be more likely to mix the chemicals in clouds at much lower altitudes where it would more easily precipitate downward on the population. The chemtrail sprayings always take place at high altitudes where the materials can linger or drift long distances: hardly an accurate delivery method. The sprayings are also done only in clear areas of the sky–which, again, points to weather modification.

What I'm convinced of now, is that the widespread flu-like and Alzheimer's symptoms have been mere side effects of the sprayed chemicals, and not the direct purpose of the sprayings. The extensive use of aluminum oxide, found as the primary component of these reflective clouds, does have serious medical side effects and may well explain the upsurge in Alzheimer's disease in the US–which is reaching epidemic proportions. I think it is also clear that the government has been experimenting with different types and mixes of chemicals, which explains why the observations and effects differ over time. Several years ago, there were many sightings of sticky droplets falling from the sky, trailing spider-web-like strands behind. Upon contact they made people very ill. Later chemical analysis has shown a lot of aluminum oxide and micro fibers, also composed of barium and aluminum. People living under these spray patterns have developed Alzheimer's-like symptoms.

As expected, the US continues to deny any spraying as well as any experimentation in weather modification. The media is totally complicit in this cover-up as well. The allegations have been widespread over the internet for years. Thousands of inquiries have gone out to the media over the years and not once has the major media ever done a story on this issue. The health consequences are huge. Even the politically correct environmental movement has had no luck in pressing the media for coverage. There is no way to explain the media's refusal to investigate or give coverage to this story except that they are fully aware of it and are under bogus national security orders to spike the story.

A US Air Force Colonel, according to Thomas, told a senator: The Air Force is not conducting any weather modification and has no plans to do so in the future. But as Thomas retorts, In fact, attempts to steer hurricanes by spraying heat-robbing chemicals in their paths began in the 1950s. The recipe for creating cirrus shields was outlined in an unusually arrogant US Air Force study. Subtitled, Owning the Weather by 2025, the 1996 report explained how weather force specialists were dispersing chemicals behind high-flying tanker aircraft in a process the air force calls aerial obscuration. Sounds just like what people are describing as chemtrails. Even members of Congress know about Chemtrails. The term is in the list of prohibited Space activities of Rep. Kucinich’s HR 2977 Space Preservation Act. Because of the variety of different chemicals used in Chemtrails over the past 10 years and the changing patterns of spraying, Im convinced the government is still experimenting and hasnt actually found a predictable way yet to harness the weather. Sadly, this only means the secret experiments will continue and people will suffer.

EMERGENCY HEALTH POWERS ACT SPREADS TO THE STATES

The Neal Knox Report (http://www.shotgunnews.com/knox/knox.dog) mentions that The Centers for Disease Control, which calls gun violence a public health epidemic, has sent a model law to state legislatures which would give state agencies unprecedented powers in the event of a public health emergency — including the power to seize private property. The first draft of the Model Emergency Health Powers Act — the version introduced in some of the 14 states where it has been filed — specifically includes the power to control, restrict and
regulate … firearms …. Other sections of the bill authorize seizure and destruction of private property and exempt the state from liability. Whenever the government engages in illegal activities they always seek for official immunity.

A series of qualitative chemical tests and deductions now confirm without doubt the presence of significant amounts of barium within atmospheric samples. Citizens may now begin the process of collecting the sample materials for formal submission to public environmental agencies and private labs for identification. The testing process can be done at modest expense and the results from laboratory analysis can now be qualitatively and independently verified without great difficulty. Any testing service employed will need to be able to demonstrate no vested interest in the outcome of the results, accuracy of method, and the willingness to have the testing process independently monitored.

The material under analysis has been collected by a plate ionizing filter; it may also be collected with conventional fiber filtration over a longer period of time. HEPA filter collection and subsequent electrolysis of the filter material placed in distilled water has also proven successful. Extended time periods may be required to collect a sufficient volume of material for electrolytic processing and external testing preferences. Readers are referred to previous articles1,2 for two methods of collection. The use of electrolysis is significant in producing a final compound for testing purposes. The solid materials (powder/ crystals) collected by the plate ionizing filter, assuming they satisify the test procedures described on this page, will be sufficient for laboratory analysis. Qualitative chemical tests and flame tests positively establish the significant presence of barium compounds within the atmospheric sample.

Citizens with sufficient environmental concern are encouraged to begin this process of sample collection and identification, along with the documentation of the responses of both public and private environmental services.

I suggest that, though there may be some repetition, please read Part 1 first. To go to it quickly, either scroll down or click on this link:

http://cloudman23.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/the-coriolis-effect-in-the-real-world-a-tutorial-part-1/

The set of weather maps, provided by NOAA, shows the remains of Ike after it began to head toward the northeast. At this latitude there is a tendency for weather systems in the middle latitudes to travel generally from west to east. Notice the cold fronts which indicate that Ike had changed from tropical to extratropical. The cold fronts represent the leading edge of cooler air being thrown out of the anticyclone (high with rotation) centered over the Eastern Dakotas. That air is coming "down" from some component of the north whereas the air on the "warm" side of the cold fronts is coming up from some component of the south and is being thrown out of the anticyclone centered off Florida. So, we have a cyclone (low with rotation), Ike, between two anticyclones.

The only alterations I have made to the first map are 1) cropping of the original, 2) labeling of the fronts 3) placement of the red L and the two blue H's, and 4) darkening of two of the isobar values making it easier for you to read.

Isobars are imaginary lines, of course, and plot equal pressure. For example, every point on the 1020 isobar was believed to have had a pressure of 1020 millibars at the time of observation. In many ways isobars are analogous to contour lines on topographic maps. In fact, the two "highs" on a topographic map would be hills and the "low" would be a trough-shaped valley between the hills. Sticking with that analogy, surface runoff water would tend to flow down the hillsides along a stream gradient (or gravity gradient) toward the lower valleys. In the simplest of topographic and geological settings the water would flow down the hills in a radial pattern, just as air would flow out of the highs were it not for the Coriolis effect. Though water flowing down hillsides in stream channels does not respond to the Coriolis effect, air flowing on the scale depicted here does by deflecting to the right of the pressure gradient direction. So, in the second version of the weather map I have drawn blue lines of which two are comparatively long, showing the direction that the air would flow if the earth did not rotate on it's axis. But, remember, rotation of the globe causes the Coriolis deflection to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.

It's important to note that the deflection is with reference to the object or fluid in motion. For example, if someone driving directly toward you turns right, he/she will have turned to your left. Though that person's turn would be to your left, it is still a right turn. So, in northern Texas the green line shows that the air is moving to the right of the pressure gradient direction (light blue) - even though that green arrow points toward the left side of the map. Just put yourself in the position of the air in motion and you should not have difficulties with this.

This, then, shows why air in the northern hemisphere moves clockwise around anticyclones and counterclockwise around cyclones.

Near the end of my first tutorial on the Coriolis effect I revealed that the following question had come up often during my teaching career: "If the Coriolis effect is an important influence in large scale weather systems, and since hurricanes are synoptic scale (a type of macroscale) system, why do hurricane winds turn left in the northern hemisphere and right in the southern hemisphere?"

The "obvious" left turning of air within hurricanes causes confusion among many people who are trying to understand air circulation - particularly if they are starting from scratch without knowledge of the Coriolis effect or the pressure gradient force and how the two engage in a tug of war. I understand the confusion because seeing the shape of hurricane rain bands on radar and arcuate cloud band alignment clearly shows how the air turns left as it gets closer and closer to the hurricane's eye wall.

Not too many years ago I heard a person who should know better, during a television weather report, explain to the viewing audience that hurricanes were so powerful that they did not respond to the Coriolis effect - referring to the "left turns" that she was showing on the satellite loop that was being projected. I don't know whether or not in some previous weather report she had mentioned the Coriolis effect but it seemed to me that might have been the case. In her honest attempt to educate some of her audience, she gave them information which was entirely incorrect - perhaps because of misinformation given her or maybe some general assumptions she had made. You see, it is the Coriolis effect that forces the counterclockwise rotation in the first place!

In this last illustration (below) you are looking at a satellite image of hurricane Fran (1996). I have drawn blue pressure gradient lines and red air flow lines which clearly show the rightward deflection (in spite of the fact that the air does turn left as it approaches the eye wall. Notice, however, that no matter where pressure gradient lines are placed along the air flow lines, the deflection of the "real wind" is always to the right of the pressure gradient line.

Once again, as in Part 1, I have not truly explained the Coriolis effect; I have merely described it and illustrated it. I have not explored the nitty-gritty. I have implied that it is only an apparent force. You might want to explore other attempts to describe the Coriolis effect - perhaps via an Internet search.

Finally, in the interest of accuracy, I must admit that I have simplified to the point of leaving out some important forces that play a roll in determining the actual direction that air moves (from high toward low) in its quest to reach pressure equilibrium. Among those are friction, centripetal force, and centrifugal force. The conservation of angular momentum is an important consideration and accounts for the increase in wind velocity as the air gets closer to the storm's center.

This blog could be really long but I'll keep it short. I think the church could stand to learn a lot from Disney in the way they move people, handle staff, maintenance, up keep, etc. I'm sure as you pick it a part there would be many things we would not want to copy as well.

What I noticed this trip was mostly about "the experience". As a church we strive to make it so easy and comfortable for people to get to the worship gathering. From parking, where to sit, etc. I'm not suggesting we quit doing this. I think it's great and we should continue to pursue it. I just feel that sometimes we focus more on that then actually making it a worthwhile experience once they get there.

In order for me to get to the experience at Disney it took a lot of walking, several different modes of transportation, and fighting through thick crowds. To top it off, I paid a good amount of money to do it all. That's just to get in the front gate! I thought to myself, "why do I do this". Here's what I came up with, apply where necessary;

First and foremost, my kids love it. They talk about it for weeks afterward.

You always know you can expect quality. From cleanliness to attractions, they do it right.

The place takes your mind off the cares of the world and allows you to get lost in the "magic".

They are masters of "atmosphere".

These are just a few things, the list goes on. I believe if we make our worship gatherings a place where people experience Jesus in a real way and add in the elements mentioned above, people will go through great lengths to get there and be a part of it.

What do you think?

Scientists testing the atmosphere above a walnut grove in California found aspirin in the air.

Actually, they found a chemical variant of aspirin, methyl salicylate (MeSA), which you may not have heard of but you've certainly smelled and tasted. It's also known as oil of wintergreen, ingredient of Ben-Gay liniment and wintergreen Life Savers. (It's both the flavoring in those Life Savers and the reason they sparkle when you chew them).

Scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research say that plants use MeSA as a warning chemical, puffing it into the air to communicate "ecosystem-level stresses" to other plants.

Researchers had found earlier that tobacco plants release MeSA into the air when they are infected with a virus. The NCAR scientists found it above the walnut grove when temperatures got cold enough to damage leaves. The signal may give undamaged plants a head start on beefing up their defenses.

Aspirin-like chemicals seem to trigger a plant's Systemic Acquired Resistance response, which is essentially the plant version of an immune system. The SAR response helps plants both to resist disease and to recover from it.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Willow bark. Photo by joebaz."][/caption]

Aspirin is better known, of course, for its effects on disease symptoms in people. Its variant salicylic acid was known as a pain reliever and fever reducer long before it was chemically formulated in 1853 (as acetylsalicylic acid) or manufactured in pill form (by Bayer in the 1890s).

The bark of willow trees contains a lot of salicylic acid, and was used by Native Americans and ancient Sumerians, to name a few. The flowering shrub called myrtle and, of course, wintergreen, are also sources of pain relief preparations.

But with this new information about how plants use MeSA, people can now make use of the chemical in another way. Farmers could use the MeSA signal much like plants do - to detect stress or disease before it spreads. Since the MeSA signal appears before there is any visible damage to the plants, a farmer who monitors the signal can take action - applying pesticides, for example. "The earlier you detect that something's going on, the more you can benefit in terms of using fewer pesticides and managing crops better," is how one of the scientists put it.

Journal article: Chemical sensing of plant stress at the ecosystem scale.
