Like most kids, my two love to play outside. Each morning after breakfast, Andrew toddles over to

Like most kids, my two love to play outside. Each morning after breakfast, Andrew toddles over to the back patio door and whimpers like a puppy for me to let him out. If I don't respond to that, he'll go find his little shoes and bring them to me, and if I don't take that hint, he'll go find my shoes and give them to me. The problem is, it's been hot as blazes, and my body temperature being about 50 degrees above normal, I can't stand it. I step outside and am immediately soaked. So on days like today when the thermometer flirts with triple digits, I try to find ways to make the indoors more appealing. This is not easy, since kids don't really care how hot it is or how many bug bites they get (or at least mine don't seem to). Andrew especially would much rather dig in the dirt with a stick or pick up little handfuls of rocks in 100 degree heat than do anything inside (except maybe eat). And the same goes for George. And I don't really blame them; in fact I think it's a good thing. But under the circumstances I can only take so much before I want to die.

So that was today's challenge. I was so desperate that I got out the finger paint for George while Andrew was napping. Actually, we started out with watercolors, but it didn't take long for him to abandon the whole brush thing and just dip his fingers into the little tray, so I went whole-hog and let him dig in. Is there anything more thrilling to a three-year-old than five tubs of brightly colored paint to glop around with his hands? I would be hard-pressed to find it. I know when I was three it was about the greatest thing my mom could ever allow us to do. (I only remember one time when she let us fingerpaint, and I remember it was the most fun I had ever had in my life.)

In these times we all cherish our furry 4 leg friends as though they were our children

By Kristin

In these times we all cherish our furry 4 leg friends as though they were our children. I have two ‘kids' of my own at home named Leia and Pippin. Though only cats, I still spoil them with the best natural food and squeakiest mice I can afford. It only makes sense then, that couples today are feeling inclined to incorporate their pets into the ceremony and/or reception. Adam Sandler had his dog, Meatball, as the ring bearer; and Eva Longoria had Jinxie with her at the wedding. So many people today wouldn't dream of their big day without their other 'best friend'.

Some couples will dress their dog up in a tux, but I feel a simple collar can make a huge statement without looking silly or making the pup uncomfortable. Using many of fantastic ribbons and trims, there are endless possibilities for your pup's look. Greek Key is a very simple design that will look good with a lot or even something a little more elegant and floral could work too. You can add rhinestones, buttons or charms to jazz it up. Maybe you can leave it plain and undecorated.

The example I made was very easy and took no time at all. You just need some basic sewing skills, a sewing machine and the materials.

Collar

1" Metallic Jacquard Greek Key (White/Silver) #38993, 1 Yard

1" Nickel D-Ring #10418

Silver Square Clasp #30160

Leash

½" Metallic Jacquard Greek Key (White/Silver) #28550, 4 yards

Nickel Claw Closure #35596

Other Materials

Thread, Scissors, Straight Pins

How To:

Measure your pooch's neck, not too tight, but loose enough for comfort. Add one inch for the seam allowance.

Thread the clasp onto the ribbon and fold the ribbon in half in the middle. This will double the ribbon for durability. Sew a straight line right next to where the bar in the clasp is.

Place the D-Ring on one side of the ribbon (don't put both through, just one side) with the loop facing out.

Sew down each edge of the ribbon after the D-Ring (through both layers) and stop 1" from the unfinished end. Fold the ends under ½" and loop over the other bar of the clasp, sew shut with several rows of stitching to secure extra.

Viola, you have a custom made collar for your best friend!

Now, onto the leash...

Thread the ribbon through the bar of the claw clasp until you get to the middle of the ribbon (just like with the collar). Sew a straight line next to the bar of the clasp to secure.

Just like with the collar, sew down each end of the ribbon (both layers) until you get 1" from the unfinished end. Fold in the ends ½" and sew the edges to finish. Take the newly finished end and fold it about 14" in to create the wrist strap. Sew a small square to secure, sew over the square two more times. Clip leash onto the collar and your pup can walk down the aisle in style!

So, I’ve taken to checking the mail when I come in from walking the dog in the morning, which

So, I've taken to checking the mail when I come in from walking the dog in the morning, which was fortuitous today because I had a check from cafepress in there. So, thanks to all y'all who bought stuff, because that was a nice surprise (though I'd also, in a completely unrelated point, mention that the Tiny Cat Pants bags can hold a lot of groceries, if you're looking to cut down on your plastic bag consumption. Though, in another completely unrelated point, the Professor tells me that she's already started cutting up bags for me to make bags with, so, if you live in the greater Nashville area and you have plastic bags you don't know what to do with, drop me a line and we'll swing by and pick them up, so weigh that: save the earth through canvas or wait and save the earth through meta-bags.).

But, I also had a newsletter from the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and it is chalk full of pictures of the cutest kids. I don't know who their photographer is, but I about went and woke the Butcher up just so he could "Aw" along with me. Also, there's some handsome dude (not you, Stephen Fotopulos, I know who you are) leaning against a wall all casual and good-looking-like AND a beautiful picture of a dancer kneeling down to talk to, again, some adorable little girl.

It's worth it to give money to TIRRC just for the pictures in the newsletter.

But, they also have a nice piece from Daoud Abudiab from the Islamic Center of Columbia, Tennessee, which you may recall was burnt to the ground by racist assholes, who is giving an update on what's going on with the Islamic community in Columbia. It turns out that the First Presbyterian Church has been giving them space to meet.

Oh Presbyterians, you warm my heart. In honor of you, I'll even refrain from telling the story of my dad walking in on me and AF wrapped around a young Presbyterian minister's son wearing nothing but his white briefs, though, honestly, it wasn't much more of a story than that description right there so, really, Presbyterians, it's the best of both worlds. I still get to tell my story and you still get to feel like you've won a small battle against the hated (ex-)Methodists. (For those of you not up on your inter-Protestant rivalries, that's a joke. We love the Presbyterians. Their ministers' sons are easy.)

Speaking of ministers' sons, here's an actual conversation that happened in my house yesterday.

"Hey, you have to move your money to a different bank."

"Ugh, um, you woke me up for that? I don't have a bank."

"Yes, a place where you keep your money safe?"

"Not in this economy."

"I want you to find a different bank. Yours smells like pee."

"I don't have a bank."

"Did I not just get the shit scared out of me by two hundred bucks falling out of your yearbook? I'm all trying to see what Chris and Hiedi looked like as youngsters one minute and the next I'm Pacman Jones's stripper."

"Ha, did you just actually make a funny reference to PacMan Jones?"

"I'm just saying, it's startling when money falls out of places you're not expecting it."

"Most folks would find that to be a good thing... Hey, wait a second. Why does my old yearbook smell like pee?"

"I don't know. Maybe you should talk to your evil cat."

Polymer clay is the new and modern way to make jewelry. The material used is referred to as ‘clay

Polymer clay is the new and modern way to make jewelry. The material used is referred to as ‘clay” because of its texture that makes working with the material similar to working with mineral clay. However, this compound does not contain minerals or clay but instead it is made up of PVC or polyvinyl chloride that is suspended in plasticizer. Check out our video below for "how-to" ideas on this fun way to make jewelry.

It is flexible enough to twist, roll or bend into any shape you desire making it easy and fun to work with. You will find a variety of different colors that can be used alone, blended together to make a unique color or you can place colors together without blending. The options are unlimited when you use polymer clay.

Another great thing about working with polymer clay is that it doesn’t dry out over time. Therefore, you can spend as long as you like shaping and working with it until you achieve the results you like. Once you have the shape and design you want for your jewelry it is ready for the firing process. This can be done right in your home oven and the shape or size will not change during the firing process.

You can make your own beautiful necklaces, pendants, earrings and more from polymer clay. This gives you the opportunity to have fascinating unique jewelry that no one else has ever seen before. The best news is that polymer clay is easy to find because this remarkable sculpting material is now sold in hobby shops, craft stores and art stores everywhere.

In mid-December, I've mentioned that my viola's neck unglued. Since then, I got hold of another violin while waiting for violin-fixing materials to arrive. Though they've arrived safely about over six months ago, we haven't taken the time to fix the viola.

A month ago, unfortunately, the second violin, which at the time was being the center of attention at a pre-youth party, got dropped - and the scroll broke off. (Way to go MC - my violin braking record is increasing at an alarming rate ...)

Seeing this instrument was not mine, I was adamant at getting it fixed before I left.

So today, we took out the violin glue, the clamps, the foam, and any other tools we thought were useful, and adventured ourselves into the world of violin-making. Meanwhile, Sarah went picture-happy. :P

By Dara

It's been a while since my last blog post, but now I'm back with a new project to share with everyone. I, like many other females enjoy styling my hair. However, it's not always as simple as using a comb and some hairspray. Every now and then I use some accessories such as bobby pins and hair clips.

I use to keep all my hair clips in a basket. I spend quite a good amount of time searching through the basket just to find the clips I want to use. All this wasted time spent searching for my cilps in the morning before work inspired me to be a bit more organized.

I took some fabric and covered a foam center board using 3M Super 77 multipurpose spray adhesive. Remember to iron your fabric before covering the board.

Now is the fun part. I chose different colors and sizes of some grosgrain ribbon to make a flower. For example, I take a 3/8" yellow grosgrain ribbon and laid it on top of a 5/8" williamsberg blue grosgrain ribbon. And I cut it at every 2 1/2" so I that I can create a full circle and stitch the ribbon from one end to the other. I made a total of four circles. Then I placed each circle on top of each other to create a star shape. I stiched the center using thread and also added a button. After that I just pin down the flower to the board and pin a another grosgrain ribbon underneath so that it's dangling.

You can decorate your hair clip organizer anyway you want. The main idea is to have a ribbon that dangles so you can clip your accessosries to it. Don't forget to add a ribbon at the top of the board from behind. This way you can hang it anywhere you like.

"There will be times when you will be in the field without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don't be bitter because you can't record it. Sit down, drink it in,
and enjoy it for what it is!"
--DeGriff

anyone who's familiar with the board game ca$hflow would probably say, "doodads!"

BUT

yes, i've just upgraded my (until recently) free multiply account to premium. i have lots of albums and stuff there already and my experience with multiply has been, so far, so good. i wanted to keep all the photos i uploaded in hi-res and i did not want to risk losing any of the comments that contacts and passersby have left there. it was easy for me to do decide on doing the move -- upgrade!

you might think i've gone overboard there and that i'm crazy enough to be shelling out some money for such a thing. well... HEY, i may be crazy. when i realized i could lose the hi-res versions of the photos i have published online, it was a no-brainer for me to come up with the decision: buy the account.

i told my friends i was going to apply for a credit card -- if only so i can purchase my multiply account. "my no-plastic-money personal policy be damned." (adik! haha.) good thing, i did not quite reach that point since a good friend offered to pay the account for me (i just have to pay back in pesos.)

back in 2004, i signed up for a flickr account but i was never tempted to upgrade (read: pay for) my account there. the interaction and network options just seemed inadequate. with multiply, i am more than satisfied with the interaction and the options -- blog, photos, videos, links, reviews, music, guestbook, etc, all in one even with a free account. (with generous bandwidth at that!)

so, why did i upgrade to premium? because. i. just. felt. i. should.

pay me a visit there, okay?

p.s. if i were to pursue a different career path, i'd opt to do full-time photography. right now, except for my trusty sony ericcson, i don't have the camera. for the time being, i am making the most of what i have. as they say, it's the surgeon, not the scalpel. in the same line of thought, it's the one taking the shot, not the camera. see ya around!

The first times I ever tried meditating, which would have been a good 20 years ago, it was pretty fu

The first times I ever tried meditating, which would have been a good 20 years ago, it was pretty funny. I know now that what happened to me happens to a lot of people who try to meditate. I thought there was something different about me. "I can't meditate," I told my friend. She was so surprised to hear that about me. Of all the people she knew, she thought I was the meditating sort.

The tapes and books I've been reading lately all have assured me that my experience is perfectly normal. These teachers have let me know that my busy mind is not a problem. It's human. My getting itches I want to scratch and feeling uncomfortable 30 seconds into what I thought was going to be a comfortable sitting position...none of this is unusual nor is it a problem. I am just to hold in awareness whatever arises and gently guide my focus back to the breath.

THIS breath.

THIS breath.

And THIS breath.

If I find I've been thinking, I can say to myself, "thinking" as if the thought were a bubble and I were touching it lightly with a feather.

Then gently bringing my attention back to the breath.

And again.

And again.

With humour and patience and compassion.

But days and days had gone by and I wasn't adding any minutes to the length of time I could sit before I couldn't handle any more. I thought I should be getting less fidgety over time.

Then yesterday I tried something different. In one of the chapters of The MIracle of Mindfulness (I THINK that's where I got this idea), Thich Nhat Hanh suggests you may want to try counting the breaths to ten and starting over.

In breath one, out breath one.

In breath two, out breath two.

So I sat under the pine tree on the grass and tried this, keeping track of which cycle of ten I was on with my fingers.

I had a VERY different experience this time. This time I settled into a nice, quiet place where my thoughts intruded less frequently. I did not fidget. In fact, I forgot all about the rest of my body. Everything melted away except in breath five, out breath five, in breath six, out breath six,...

I was able to sit much longer, and for the first time, there was an ease to it. Not only that, but this was also the first time I felt noticeably different after meditation than I had felt going into it.

To me, this was nothing short of a small miracle.

The only problem was... I ran out of fingers. I could only do ten cycles of ten. That's when I got the grand idea to look into malas. Instead of buying one, I decided to make one.

Sylvain and I are only left by ourselves in this house once in a blue moon, but it happened tonight! After supper, I went down to the basement and dragged out the box marked "craft room" that has been packed away for a year. Soon the breakfast table was buried under pliers, wire, crimps, findings, and tiny jars--each with a different colour group of beads.

The cat was quite interested and wanted to help. Ma peeked in my CRAFT ROOM box and made off with a stack of Marie Claire Idees.

I finally found inspiration for my mannequin torso. Some of you may be like, “What? Mannequi

I finally found inspiration for my mannequin torso. Some of you may be like, "What? Mannequin Torso? What is she talking about?" Well, last week, Ry, Mocha, and I were taking an evening walk all over our neighborhood. We discovered this cool little footpath that connects two streets near our house. It was through the woods, behind a bunch of houses, and quite nice. At the end of it, there was a garbage can that (unfortunately) was surrounded by a bunch of trash. Also laying nearby was the torso of a female mannequin. Now, some of you may think I'm weird, but I (of course) wanted it immediately. Ry carried it home for me and the rest is history! (Don't worry- I washed it off with Clorox & water...)

Now, you're probably all wondering what I was planning on doing with a mannequin torso, right? Well, so was I- but I knew something cool would come of it! There is a hole in the back, and a knob where you would connect the torso to legs- that gave me an idea... why not make a cool lamp?! So, I began work on it yesterday. The painting is complete, I just need to get some light for the inside. For now, you can all enjoy it without light! I'll repost when I get the light to work! :)

Here are some websites I found with painted torsos- they're pretty cool...

Transform a plain baseball cap to something a little bolder with the addition of a bullion crest. The crest can transform a simple cap to something that carries a sense of bold maturity. Crests come in such a broad range of themes; it¹s easy to find one that suits you or your loved one best.

Materials:

Bullion Crest

Baseball cap (or any other kind of hat with a heavy weight fabric and sufficient surface area for a crest)

Unique Stitch fabric glue

Needle + thread to match crest

Scissors

Straight pins

Directions:

Apply some Unique Stitch fabric glue to the center of the crest, then center the crest onto the front of the hat.

Pin the edges of the crest down with straight-pins and set the hat aside to dry for about 30-45 minutes.

Thread your needle sew from the inside of the hat so that the knot at the end of your thread is hidden.

Stitch around the edge of the crest, removing the pins as you go. Remember to be careful of the inner lining sweatband that most baseball hats have. You don¹t want to sew that down.

Finish off your stitches on the inside of the hat and you are done!

I have to admit, Boston-based OAK Handmade Clothing and Gifts has some really cool-looking, crafty, cute stuff. But I have to call to attention their Dingey Shorts ($65):

There is SO much going on here, I'm not even sure where to start. What to call these things. They are Jorts, the are over-the-waist mom jeans, they are nautical themed, they are worn by a woman who looks partially amphibious herself. Jorts, Mom Jeans, Sailors... I don't know what to call these. I'm open to suggestion. RIght now I'll leave it open to discussion.

These jorts prove one thing -- if you are attractive, you can make anything look good. In fact, that is a Vice Magazine Fashion tip I believe.
