Losing your entire system (and your collection of obscure, but "legitimately" obtained kung-fu movies in the process) is no doubt a major pain in the ass, but it's by no means the end of the world. Losing your main work laptop, and all of your work related emails from the past 3 years is.

So I've decided to share some of my thoughts and experiences that I had while evaluating various products for our Managed Security offering.

I looked up some statistics on Data loss and Virus attacks and found some interesting information (You can read more here). It's pretty scary stuff:

• Between 50-60% of small businesses that suffer a major data loss, end up going out of business as a result.
• American business lost more than $7.6 billion as a result of viruses during first six months of 1999.
• It is estimated that Virus attacks (and data loss as a result) may cost UK businesses approximately $2 billion.

Over the last few weeks I've blogged on using the Zend Framework's Akismet Service to "spam proof" your generic, run of the mill contact form.

Of course, services like Akismet and TypePad Antispam only come into play after the form has been submitted, a "cure" so to speak.

What we really need is some form of robust "prevention". Stop the spam bots right at the door. There's nothing more irritating than getting bombarded by 10k submissions every hour on the hour - even if they're being filtered out by your Akismet / TypePad service.

Which brings us to the now common place CAPTCHA component. Designed to stop automated spam bots in their tracks, its a pretty effective method. Ordinarily, it's not too difficult to implement a CAPTCHA component to your form, but ReCaptcha and the Zend Framework have now made it child's play.

ReCaptcha is an online service providing a free CAPTCHA API for you to use. What's also really nifty is that while your users fill in the CAPTCHA form, they're also helping develop OCR software used to digitize books and manuscripts.

As an example I've gone and written a basic contact form, zipped it up and made it available here. Inside the zip file is all the code necessary for a very basic and hopefully spam proof contact form.

The following Zend Framework components were used :

• Zend Loader
• Zend Config
• Zend View
• Zend Service ReCaptcha
• Zend Service Akismet
• Zend Mail
• Zend Validate
• Zend Filter
• Zend Registry

I've also included a simple wrapper for Zend View, since I didn't feel that it was necessary to go the whole MVC route on this one.

The code used is pretty straightforward and easy to follow with as many comments thrown in there as I could stomach, but if you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment or send a mail.

Before you begin, you'll need the following:

• A ReCaptcha key pair (multiple key pairs are supported by this script)
• An Akismet/TypePad Antispam API key

To use, unzip the file (it already contains the Zend Framework v1.6), edit the config.xml file and then simply customize the view scripts (view/form.php, view/success.php, view/mail.php).

Unfortunately I haven't had much time to test the example thoroughly as it was written in a bit of a hurry (only had about an hour or so), so if you find or even fix any bugs please let me know and I'll sort it out as soon as I get an opportunity to do so.

Termo empregue para referir a emissão simultânea de uma mensagem de e-mail para vários utilizadores ao mesmo tempo, tem, regra geral, as seguintes características:

1. não é solicitado pelo receptor
2. a identificação do remetente é falsa
3. é usada a máquina servidora de correio electrónico de uma vítima, seja de um ISP ou de uma entidade pública ou privada

Em Portugal é este terceiro ponto que confere a tipificação criminosa a quem envia o "spam", uma vez que, quem naqueles termos usar um servidor de e-mail de terceiro pode ser acusado da prática do crime de acesso ilegítimo.

Pode ainda coexistir o crime de falsificação se a identificação de endereço falsificada referida no ponto "2." for a de alguém em concreto.

Se o intuito do "spam" é interferir no normal funcionamento de um sistema informático poderá ser considerado crime de sabotagem informática, punido com pena de prisão de cinco anos, ou com pena de multa.

Google Documenti, creazione, pubblicazione e condivisione di documenti online

Il poter accedere online ai propri documenti, mandarli ad altri per revisione, condividerli in un gruppo di lavoro ed archiviarli in sicurezza è praticamente il sogno di tutti, con Google Documenti questi obiettivi possono essere raggiunti con semplicità ed a costo zero. Google Documenti consente di creare online documenti di testo, fogli di calcolo, presentazioni, perfettamente compatibili con Microsoft Office ed Open Office oltre a gestire la maggior parte dei formati di uso comune.

Naturalmente tutti i documenti creati o archiviati su Google Documenti possono risiedere sul proprio computer e possono essere modificati sul proprio computer e poi aggiornati online, ma quando vi abituerete a creare e modificare i documenti online lo troverete più semplice e comodo..

Anche Google Documenti è una applicazione molto potente che risolve moltissimi problemi che invece si incontrano utilizzando pacchetti software come Microsoft Office, la gestione e la condivisione online sono semplici ed a portata di tutti e l'utilità che si può ricavare da un servizio di questo è molto maggiore di quella che un utente medio possa immaginare a partire dalla sicurezza di avere anche le proprie bollette della luce salvate in una posizione sicura.

L'esperto digitale illustrerà al cliente come utilizzare Google Documents per archiviare online la propria documentazione, le proprie immagini e i propri files, come accedervi e come condividerli o inviarli. Anche il carteggio familiare può essere prezioso e va salvaguardato oltre che reso facilmente consultabile.

I'm happy to report that TypePad Antispam is just as effective as Akismet, with the bonus of there being no restrictions on usage (that I could find in any case).

With all of that in mind - I simply copied the current Zend/Service/Akismet.php class - renamed it to Zend/Service/TypePadAntiSpam.php and did a simple search and replace. The two services are so alike in implementation, that's all it took.

The code posted below makes the following assumptions :

• You have a TypePad Antispam API key
• You have the Zend Framework installed and configured correctly : click here for documentation
• You have written the form HTML, the form has been submitted and all input data has been sanitized (make sure to read the comments).
  
• You know how to use the php mail() function or have an equivalent method
