Symantec's Anti Virus tips

I tried today to find a solution for all the updates that Symantec's AntiVirus product gathers other time but never deletes. The server I was working on had about 6GB worth of old definitions! Anyway after an exhausting Google search, I found some websites that charge you for the solution,(no thanks) so in the end I worked it out myself and here's the solution;

You should have a "LiveUpdate Administration Utility". Load it up.
Under Tools, there's an option to "Clean up download Directory"!! Hey Presto! This is it.
Once you click on that, there's a "Delete ALL Files" or "Remove Unsued Files". I chose the second option and it did exactly what I wanted. i.e. remove all the old Def's that I no longer used or wanted.

So ends the tip for today.

Fixing Problems With VMWare & SofTest

I wasted three hours yesterday fixing this problem, so I thought I'd share the solution, in case anyone else consults The Oracle and also fails to find the easy fix. Also, I'd check the General Tips (below) and install whatever other software you need before installing SofTest (see the long discussion of the problem at the end of this post for the reasons why).

The Goal: Examsoft's SofTest is the software used by the CA Bar to lock down laptops while taking the Bar Exam. It must be installed before applicants can take the test. SofTest is Windows-only, so for Mac users to use the software, Windows must be installed via Boot Camp, and then SofTest can be installed in the Windows partition.

The Problem (short version): You've installed but cannot run SofTest because it says you're installed VMWare software... even though you already uninstalled VMWare. If you currently or in the past have used VMWare, you won't be able to run SofTest even after uninstalling VMWare, unless you take these extra steps.

Email VMWare For A Fix: According to MacLawStudents, ExamSoft does offer a fix, though they haven't made it available through their site (and didn't offer it to me when I called). If you have the time, you might want to try this first. If you're comfortable finding and deleting files on your own, however, I'd read on to The Solution below.

Through research, we have found that the VMWare Tools package deployed by VMWare Fusion does not completely remove all components when removed via Add/Remove programs.

We have created a simple utility that will prompt the user to uninstall VMWare Tools and will also remove the items left behind that caused the problem with SofTest. Users of SofTest may contact support via phone, chat or email to request the fix.

The Easy, Quick Solution (found here):

Using the VMWare Fusion CD, uninstall Fusion from OS X. It will still leave your Virtual Machines in place, so don't worry if you've already installed Linux or anything like that.
Boot into Windows by shutting off your computer and then holding down the ALT/Option key when you reboot. On reboot, Boot Camp will give you the option to boot into OS X or Windows. Choose Windows.
Go to Start (or the Windows icon at the bottom-left, if you're in Vista) » Control Panel. Then choose Uninstall Programs. Select VMWare Tools from the list, and click the Uninstall button.
You'd think you're done, but you'd be wrong. Instead, here's what you need to do. Go to Start and then to Search. You'll need to search for and delete three files. Evidently SofTest checks for the presence of the following files:
1. vms_fb.dll
2. vmx_fb.dll
3. vmx_svga.sys
These are usually found in the following locations, but you may still want to perform a search for them as well:
1. C:\WINDOWS\system32\vms_fb.dll
2. C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmx_fb.dll
3. C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\vmx_svga.sys
(If your search doesn't show any of these files, first make sure that you're searching Everywhere on your computer. Then, go to Advanced Search and make sure the checkbox is clicked to allow searching for Hidden or System files.)
Search for and delete these files if found on the machine. These files are drivers used by VM Ware and are usually left behind after uninstalling VM Ware. [Note: I only found two of the three files left on my machine. Deleting them fixed the problem.]
That's it! You should now be able to run SofTest with no problem. Double-click SofTest and make with the Registration process. Best of luck on the Bar Exam!

Other General Tips:

Boot into Windows by default: In Windows, on the bottom-right corner of the screen is a gray icon for Boot Camp (over near the Network, Battery, Volume icons and the time). Click this icon and choose Boot Camp Control Panel. There, set the default OS to Windows. This will alleviate any potential problems when SofTest reboots your system to send in your completed exam. You can always switch this back later, to reboot by default in OS X after the Exam is over. In the meantime, you can still reboot while holding the ALT key and choose OS X.
Right-click: Your laptop only has one mouse button, but Windows requires that you right-click a lot. There are a couple ways to do this. First, you can hold two fingers on the trackpad and then click the mouse button, which will right-click in Windows. Second, you can install free software that will let you right-click. Third, you can always use an external mouse. Wireless optical mice are cheap nowadays - check one of the deal sites to find bargains.
Anti-virus: You're not in OS X anymore, so this Windows side of your machine can pick up viruses without you doing anything but connecting to the Internet. Viruses won't hurt your OS X system, but why worry about any other problems if you don't need to. There are lots of paid options available, and your school may offer a free license for Norton AntiVirus. If so, great. Install it. If not, a friend of mine recommended AVG Anti-Virus, which is free and has worked great so far. I couldn't be happier.
Alt-menus: In Windows, if you see an underlined letter in a menu item, that means you can hold the ALT key while hitting that letter to go straight to that menu item, without using the mouse. Great way to navigate through menus. Click here for a full list of Windows key commands.

The Problem (long version): SofTest takes a snapshot of your system when you first attempt to run it. This allows SofTest to make sure that you don't install any ways to cheat and get around its security after you've installed and registered. SofTest also looks for software on your hard drive that could be used to allow cheating. If it detects any of this software, SofTest will tell you that it cannot run, and will shut down.

One of the programs SofTest looks for as a potential avenue for cheating is VMWare's Fusion. Fusion allows Mac Users to run a virtual Windows OS inside of OS X. Fusion also allows a user who has OS X and Windows installed fully on their computer (via Boot Camp or Fusion) to access files across both OSes.

Of course, were a person to run Windows as a virtual machine, they would still have full access to the rest of their files and could, therefore, theoretically cheat like hell on the Bar Exam. And no one wants that. So, of course, ExamSoft is right to ensure that applicants can't cheat.

The problem, however, is how SofTest goes about checking for cheaters.

First, once you're set up, you can't really do much of anything to your system without causing potential conflicts. If you need to Defrag your hard drive, install any third party software, or run any other sort of maintenance, I'd do that before installing SofTest. This might be a necessary inconvenience, but it's still a hassle for the students caused by ExamSoft's need to protect against never-before-seen cheats and exploits.

Second, and the cause of the VMWare problem, is that ExamSoft seems to have been lazy in going about checking for VMWare installs. SofTest just tests for a few files, none of which are crucial for VMWare to work, in determining that VMWare Fusion is installed. Worse, instead of checking for multiple variables and components that would be necessary for a working version of VMWare's software to run, it just does a spot test and then shuts down. I'd fully deleted VMWare products from my machine and there was no possible way for me to cheat, but because SofTest found a couple of random files, it determined that I did have the software installed.

Now, this never would have been a problem had VMWare Tools uninstalled properly. But it doesn't. Instead of being fully removed from all aspects of Windows, the Windows uninstaller only gets rid of the core files. It doesn't clear out the registry and it doesn't clear out everything that VMWare had installed on my system. I put the blame here on both VMWare and Windows. VMWare for not providing an Uninstall tool for Fusion, downloadable via its support website, and Windows for using an architecture that allows and even encourages developers to put pieces of software all over the place during install, without a common naming scheme. I could have searched till the cows came home, but had someone not posted the solution, I'd never have solved the problem because it was impossible for me to find the random files that were gumming up the works.

Worst of all, however, is the terrible support provided by both ExamSoft and VMWare.

I checked both sites and Google before attempting to get personal help. Then I tried three different service tickets with ExamSoft. Two were closed without an answer, the third sent back a form letter response, complete with text from the FAQ. Next I tried Online Chat support with ExamSoft. No answer, over multiple days. Finally (after Googling to find it), I called ExamSoft tech support. Fifteen minutes on hold and I spoke to Charles, who said he didn't have a fix and that I should call VMWare.*

So it was on to VMWare. I called their tech support line, but they don't offer phone support for Fusion. I searched around their FAQ and Knowledge Base, but no search terms yielded useful solutions. Finally, a Google search with different search terms led to a solution...

Where was the solution? On VMWare's Support site ... posted by a good samaritan customer who had received the answer via email from ExamSoft!

I know I'm not alone in running into this problem. How do both VMWare and ExamSoft not have this solution listed and easy to find in their Knowledge Bases or FAQs?! Why does ExamSoft not have the answer ready if users call in for help? Why doesn't the CA Bar site have this answer listed in their FAQ? So simple. So frustrating!

UPS_Invoice email trojan variant claims to be from Customs Service

In the last hour I found in my inbox a variation on the UPS_Invoice trojans of last week. This new email claimed to be from "Customs Service" with the subject "Customs - We have received a parcel for you" and the following text:

Good afternoon,

We have received a parcel for you, sent from France on July 9. Please fill out the customs declaration attached to this message and send it to us by mail or fax. The address and the fax number are at the bottom of the declaration form.

This content was so close to the UPS_Invoice one that it seems obvious it originates from the same source.

My parents were on holiday in France on July 9th (back home now) so this might just possibly have caught me out if I had not seen the previous variant and the wording was a bit less stilted (especially the signoff), and the sender had actually been spoofed as the customs service not some random .com company. I guess the people most likely to fall for this would be anyone who bought something online from France, or through eBay and maybe they are not 100% sure where their purchase is being shipped from.

This time the attachment was called Tax_Invoice.zip which expanded directly to the executable (no folders in between this time) which was called Tax_Invoice_________________________NHHDLS883298792929.exe . I guess the filename padding is a flimsy attempt to make the end part disappear from the view and show as the truncated name "Tax_Invoice_..." or similar. Like the previous ones, this has a crude MS Word icon which has rough edges and simply does not scale above "medium icons" view in Vista - any larger and it just shows the smaller one in a larger grey box.

This one has an MD5 hash of 8CEB0F61089D86C086DCC08D6A783015.

Since the first rash of these emails last week, things died down. Presumably as the world's antivirus vendors caught up with this new malware outbreak, they were mainly being caught at the point of sending. I certainly received none for several days, then had two on Monday night / Tuesday morning with the same text as before:

Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time because the recipient’s address is not correct. Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office

(one bizarrely missed the apostrophe from "recipient's" and replaced it with a space)

Both had the same attachment UPS_INVOICE_978172.zip (47.9 KB or 49,110 bytes in size), which expanded to a 56KB (57,344 bytes) exe of the same name with MD5 checksum DA4B7EF93C588AD799F1A1C5AFB6CFAD.

Thursday's pair were just called invoice_8712.zip (48 KB or 49,192 bytes) which held a 55.5 KB (56,832 bytes) file called INVOICE_8712.exe with MD5 digest of 9E2756F0A0AD988E149845B07216B181. All of this week's emails had the subject "UPS Tracking Number nnn" with four different numbers: 1950761581, 8587187457, 7535113385, and 6853701924.

Pois é, recebi um convite para participar num Blog de uma amiga Brasileira...como já conhecia esse Blog de o visitar várias vezes, penso que ao aceitar, assumi uma tremenda de uma responsabilidade, pois não sei se estou à altura do Blog e da sua autora, como é obvio, também não quero deixar mal os Portugueses...Assim, vou-me apresentando e isso era apenas o que tinha em mente escrever hoje, só que aconteceu -me uma coisa que me levou a pensar que nem sempre ser caro é sinónimo de qualidade.

agora..........porque é aquele o pseudónimo (república dos bananas)? bom, isso é o que eu penso dos cidadãos da República Portuguesa (eu também sou banana, a única diferença da maioria, é que eu sei, os outros, a grande maioria, não sabe que é banana. E somos bananas porquê? porque pagamos impostos, muitos impostos, e não temos a coragem de exigir dos sucessivos governos, que façam aquilo para que foram eleitos....governar bem! Exploram-nos até ao tutano, criam-nos cada vez mais dificuldades, mais impostos, menos aumentos de ordenado, mais responsabilidades....mas eles, classes dominantes, estão isentas de obrigações e nós...não fazemos nada, não nos revoltamos e quando vem mais uma eleição, ai vai uma grande quantidade de gente votar nos mesmos de sempre.

Bom agora a explicação do ser barato e por vezes bom:

faz mais de um mês, sei que tenho várias viroses nos computadores cá de casa; como anti-vírus uilizava normalmente o AVG Free, mas este deixou-os passar sem os ter "conhecido" como "doenças de computador". Entretanto experimentei comprar o Panda e os computadores ficaram na mesma; copiei o Symantec Anti-virus e, depois de o instalar verifiquei que nada mudava; recentemente experimentei o "Norton internet Security 2008" actualizado e nem mesmo esse, que se supõe ser o anti-virus por excelência, resolveu fosse o que fosse.

Ontem ouvi falar no AVAST, que me diziam só ter coisas boas, sendo a melhor o facto de ser freeware. Com alguma desconfiança, fiz o download do programa, então e não é que ele resultou?

Por isso hoje devo dizer que estou duplamente satisfeito, pois acabei com os vírus e consegui aceder à caixa de e-mail do GMAIL, para descobrir e aceitar o convite de Vénus Aquario.

Neste momento já vi que me colocou um tapete de boas vindas, só espero corresponder à confiança depositada.

Mengenal Virus, Adware, Spyware & Worm

Dewasa ini hampir setiap hari terjadi gangguan terhadap komputer yang disebabkan oleh serangan virus, spyware, adware, mailware & trojan. Kejadian ini akan menimbulkan kerugian berupa hilangnya data, sistem komputer berjalan lambat, data yang dimiliki rusak serta menjadi penyebab utama sistem jaringan komputer yang dimiliki menjadi lambat karena adanya penyusupan di dalam jaringan yang berusaha menginfeksi komputer lain yang berada dalam satu jaringan yang sama.

Virus
Pada umumnya virus itu adalah program komputer yang memiliki kemampuan untuk menggandakan diri dengan cara menyisipkan programnya kedalam sebuah file lain. Virus komputer dapat menyebar dengan cepat pada file-file dalam sebuah komputer, atau bahkan menulari file di komputer lain, baik melalui jaringan maupun lewat kegiatan tukar-menukar file. Beberapa waktu yang lalu kebanyakan virus itu beredar pada file yang bereksentensi executable (berakhiran COM atau EXE). Virus ini dapat menyebabkan kerusakan.

Trojan Horse
Trojan horse (kuda Troya) sebenarnya bukanlah sebuah virus dalam artian sesungguhnya, karena program ini tidak memiliki kemampuan untuk menggandakan dirinya ke program lain. Namun demikian, program ini tidak kalah berbahaya jika dibandingkan dengan program virus komputer. Trojan dimasukan dalam RATS (remote access trojans) dimana sebuah computer dapat dikontrol oleh program tertentu, bahkan beberapa trojan difungsikan agar dapat membuka computer yang di infeksi agar dapat diaccess dari jauh. Trojan Horse umumnya dikemas dalam bentuk sebuah program yang menarik namun didalamnya disembunyikan fungsi lain untuk melakukan perusakan. Jika kita terpancing dan menjalankan program maka sistem kita secara otomatis telah terinfeksi.

Worm
Worm dapat menginfeksi komputer jika komputer yang kita gunakan untuk mendownload program dari internet tidak memiliki security yang baik. Worm biasa terdapat pada program file yang bereksentensi executable (.EXE datau .SCR). Worm biasanya mudah menyebar melalui e-mail pada saat melakukan attachment (menyisipkan data pada E-mail). Fungsi utamanya untuk melakukan serangan dan menyebar serta mengambil data dan mengirim email secara diam diam dan acak. Worm biasanya tidak mengakibatkan kerusakan berat namun kerusakan yang ditimbulkan worm cukup untuk membuat jengkel pemakai komputer karena Worm akan menggandakan diri dengan mengirimkan filenya secara otomatis melalui attachment ke setiap alamat yang ada dalam address book pada software e-mail korban. Tapi serangan worm pada mailserver sangat berbahaya karena Berjangkitnya worm menyebabkan beban kerja mailserver melonjak drastis hingga dapat mempengaruhi performanya.

Spyware
Spyware adalah program yang diam-diam masuk kedalam komputer dan mengambil data-data penting yang kita miliki seperti acount dll. Tujuan awal dari pembuatan Spyware adalah mencari data dari pemakai internet dan mencatat kebiasaan seseorang dalam menyelusuri dunia maya. Sayangnya, perkembangan Spyware tersebut dirusak dengan munculnya pencuri yang dapat mengambil data pada sebuah computer. Spyware sebenarnya tidak berbahaya, karena hanya difungsikan untuk memata matai computer seseorang setelah berkunjung. Sayangnya semakin hari semakin berkembang, bahkan spyware sudah dijadikan alat untuk mencari data pribadi pada sebuah computer.

Adware
Adware sebenarnya difungsikan sebagai promosi atau iklan berbentuk banner. Program Adware terkadang dimanfaatkan untuk mengambil bandwidth, sehingga beban koneksi internet terlalu besar dan akhirnya membuat koneksi internet menjadi lambat dan menganggu komputer ketika browsing/surfing di internet. Hal paling menjengkelkan bila jenis Adware yang menginfeksi komputer kita tidak dapat ditutup. Begitu satu pop iklan muncul kita tutup, tidak lama lagi muncul pop baru yang lebih banyak. Pop-up adalah iklan berupa kotak kecil yang kadang muncul untuk menampilkan iklan.
