shiiiittt, this is rawer than your medium rare steak house! okay badd. i first came across this song when I watched Bamako (which I did a review on in my other blog... which you should watch!) ive been looking for the original track since... and finally came across this today:

*BIG NOTE, sorry for over-youtubing but i am not a professional syndicated blogger! and not too hip or net savvy and basically too lazy and dont have the patience to stare at the screen too long and hold the mouse down... to have to transfer, upload, download, copy, paste these tracks up- so you're going to have to dig for a little more..

(This originally appeared in Rock-a-Rolla)

On every release, Mushroom has a different purpose stated throughout their musical excursions. At some points they do want to sound is if Krautrock was a validly popular musical offshoot. And at others, the sound of their city, San Fran, in past days becomes the focus. These two releases, Joint Happening and Yesterday, I Saw You Kissing Tiny Flowers…, shows the structural elements of the bands compositions being based around themselves and then someone else’s talents. On Joint Happening, the band is joined by Eddie Gale. With this addition the band doggedly attaches itself to early ‘70s fusion. Mushroom’s explorations often seem looser, if that’s possible, then much of what was being birthed in the ‘70s. Frequently the sound is not as tough and funky, “Our Love” for example. But on “I was Torn Down at the Dance Place, Shaved Head at the Organ”, the entire groove is based around the break beat. Now, all of these things occur organically, but on Yesterday, the band occasionally submits their sound to the leadership of Levy. Her performance won’t necessarily interest fans of the instrumentals even when Afro-beat, Kraut jams and somewhat sloppy grooves are all present.

The late great Fela Kuti is one of the greatest Nigerian artists to have blessed the Earth and also a distant relative, I have no choice but to bring some of his work to light on this weeks catablog. A man who became an African musical legend delivered his music with extravagance and prowess, compounding the resonance of song with potent political messages. His influence can be heard in the work of James Brown and Quincy Jones and lives on in the work of Tony Allen; his renowned drummer and his son Seun Kuti. Fela was and remains a musical man mountain.

"Downtown Guaguanco", guaguanco contemporain

Musiciens :
Rafael Genisio (Cuba) percussions.
Alejandro Spina (Argentine) percussions.
Allán González (Cuba) percussions.
Juan Cruz Bernabo (Argentine) basse électrique et baby bass.
Maximiliano Lizana (Chili), piano, clavier rhodes

hey.
I have a couple of things to say,
actually just one thing...but it involves a couple of other things...

I had the chance to attend the Riverside Festival here in Rochester, NY to see Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. Regardless of the band originating from the flower city, they are actually one of my favorites to listen too. It is a nice blend between Reggae and Afro-Beat that fits the summer season quite well.
You should listen to them too if you're a human.

[gallery]

Also, I was at a coffee shop a couple of days ago and it was open-mic night. This girl was performing that night and somehow I recognized her from somewhere. I was having trouble trying to figure out from where I knew her, so I asked myself a series of questions to solve the dilemma (did I take pictures for her before, did we make out at some party?), and suddenly I remembered I had seen an article about her in the paper on how she is one of these youtube phenomenas that have over 3 million views. Relief!

SIX glorious months and nine catablogs later and the Tenth Volume of the CATABLOG of MUSIC is upon us.

Apparently its summer but no one told the sun, so let me brighten up your life with abit of music. As UK Hip Hop seminary & revered clown prince, Tim Westwood would say *YOU NEEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE*

So glastonbury is almost a wrap, all and sundry is officially slowly sippin the Jay-Z Kool Aid and the festival season is in full swing. For those that won't be slipping into a pair of wellies this is your opportunity to share, recommend and find music that may not necessarily find the light of day or just may be of interest to other people. The aim is to have a directory of great music or what I have coined a catablog of music.

Please add your three (max) picks to this week's catablog. Format is as follows;

Genre
Artist
Song
youtube link
myspace link (if you can be bothered)
abit of blurb, two sentences max (if you're keen)

Jazz Afro-beat

Right, kicking it off with a glastoband,i was suprised to se these guys on the bill, saw them play live in london 2 summers ago. An Ethiopian jazz collective who remind me of the Buena Vista Social even the blokes at the guardian think so.You may not be able to understand the words but the music is enough!

Hip Hop
Nas

Nas' Myspace page

Creating a Spring of controversy followed by a Summer of anticipation, the new Nas album just keeps getting better and better. Earlier today the "fried chicken" track leaked, its a great collaboration and has HIT plastered all over it. Sidenote - its a mark ronson production, don't knwo how to feel about that one.

Genius
Quincy Jones

Ironside
ironside youtube
Q's Myspace

This is my favourite musician of all time, he has contributed to several generations and genres of music. His early Jazz stuff is fantastic but then this weekend I discovered he wrote the theme tune to one of my favourite childhood shows; Ironside. Its legendary, Listen.

To mark the tenth volume I will be compiling a full catablog of all the tracks recommended from v1 - 10 soon.

Thank you to everyone who has posted in the past and will post in the future!

This is the fourth volume of the Composed and Conducted- Catablog of music.

<Volume 3 welcomed more guests than the local Dartford Hilton Hotel, hitting a record total of TWENTYONE entries (yes and a few from me). Although the Dartford Branch of the Hilton may be struggling for business, its name sake of the parisian varitey has definitely seen many more pass through its doors, if Volume 4 can get anywhere near those numbers catatblog will be very happy.

It has been another tough week for music lovers everywhere, as the UK governement promises a crackdown on illegal downloading, hoping the fear of exposing your illegal download of Britney's 7th comeback album will send you running to the arms of steve jobs and itunes.

With the Oscars approaching I sincerly hope they prove to be more fruitful for the British male performers than the Brits did..seeing 'British' american Roson collect best british male may be almost as painful as watching North Londres outfit, Arsenal lift the 'English' Premier League.

Rant over, this is another opportunity to share, recommend and find music that may not necessarily find the light of day or just may be of interest to other people. The aim is to have a directory of great music or what I have coined a catablog of music.

Please add your three (max) picks to this week's catablog. Format is as follows;

Afro Beat
Tony Allen

Tony Allen myspace

Tony Allen is one of the music genius' still amongst us, former drummer in the band of legendary Nigerian musician and genius FELA KUTI, TOny Allen has been playing in my house ever since My pa's mate bought him the CD its nothing short of a revelation hope you like

Jazz
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

War
HYpnotic Buisness Myspace page

This flows nicely from the first pick as the Hypnotic brass ensemble provide the remix to the track posted above. "WAR" is an energetic track with good everything, the rest of their stuff carries some amazing melodies. These guys from chicago may not be technically crisp but musically they are on point like bullseye.

Alternative Rock
Morrissey

Tomorrow youtube
morrissey Myspace

As somber and negative as morrissey can get, I think he still has one of the most distinctive male voices the UK has produced in a long time! His greatest hits are out and his new track is great. Tomorrow is a track made for tomorrow, just never gets old.

It is a great honor to be able to interview this amazing band from NYC. Cheers Antibalas and thanks for keeping the afrobeat grooves alive. -EgoAssassin.com

****Interview with Stuart from Antibalas***

EA: Can you give us a brief history of the band?

Antibalas: Relatively painless birth. showed early promise as a child, but didn't socialize well. began cross dressing and enjoying extreme varieties of self amusement. then the rains came and everything changed. we settled for stories around the kitchen table. father would often improvise plastic for chewing gum.

EA: How many members are currently in the band?

Antibalas: Sometimes a lot, sometimes too many. rarely too few.

EA: What are the major influences on the Antibalas sound, styles, and ideas? (not only music)

Antibalas: Childhood has been a major influence on us all. our childhoods, that is.

EA: What inspired the name for your record entitled "Who is This America?"

Antibalas: Collective self effacement.

EA: Is it true that you guys have played in over 20 countries worldwide?

Antibalas: Texas counts as another country, right?

EA: What is your favorite country or city to play in?

Antibalas: Next month it's France, 100 percent.

EA: Did Antibalas get a chance to perform with any musicians that were truly admired?

Antibalas: I truly have admired every single member of antibalas.

EA: What are 2 major accomplishments that you as a band would like to achieve in the future?

Antibalas: Another record would be nice. that can count as two.

EA: Do you have a favorite Antibalas song?

Antibalas: I like the guitar part to el machete, makes me dance funny.

EA: Who writes the songs?

Antibalas: Lady luck and jesus collaborate, and different perverts watch through a key hole and take notes.

EA: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our society today?

Antibalas: Fear i guess, but i don't wanna say for sure. ...it sure has me in knots.

EA: What bothers you the most about the music industry today?

Antibalas: Its lack of industriousness.

EA: With such a big group, one must wonder....does your band get along with each other?

Antibalas: Its the best and worst.

EA: What is the most important message that Antibalas wants to give to their fans or those listening?

Antibalas: Love.

EA: Much thanks to Stuart and the Antibalas fellas. Long live the music and passion you bring to the scene.

Ο Ισραηλινός μουσικός και παραγωγός, το 2006 κυκλοφορεί το EP "No Groove Where I Come From", δημιουργώντας τεράστιο πάταγο γύρω από το όνομα του..

website | myspace

I found out about Vampi Soul Records on accident after stumbling on an Orlando Julius album [remember?] on accident in Amoeba. While I was at the register paying for the album, the cashier started ranting and raving about the label it was on and encouraged me to look into them. I listened but didn't really make any effort to look further into them. Months passed and Vampi Soul kept coming up and throughout that time people would recommend artists on the label or I'd run into interesting-looking albums from the label [refer back to "Best In the Basement"].

There's not too much I know about them, but their catalogue is pretty outstanding. They are located in Spain and specialize in rare soul, samba, acid jazz, avant garde, disco, highlife, lounge and a slew of other pretentious genres that make music geeks incredibly excited.

Here are a few of their latest releases:

Fela-Ransome Kuti

Licensed from The Fela Kuti Estate and Premier Records, this deluxe Vampisoul package, available both on double CD set and triple vinyl LP, features extensive notes by African specialist Max Reinhardt and artwork by artist Victor Aparicio. The vinyl version consist on two 12" LPs, and one special 10" LP, exact reproduction of Kuti's legendary 1966' "Afro Beat On Stage, recorded Live At the Afro Spot (PLP001)", with all the same songs, in its own jacket with original artwork, and liner notes!

Highlife Time - V/A

In our collection you'll find all of these Highlife stars and more, from the most celebrated to the obscure one-hit wonders. Not content with just churning out material available from European and American catalogues, Vampisoul journeyed to Lagos, scoured the record crates, dusted off the forgotten mastertapes and started afresh. As the radio DJs used to say back then: "People, Highlife is King! Long live Highlife!"

Available on 2CD and 2LP formats, both with complete and informative essay by African music authority John Armstrong.

Kokolo 7"

KOKOLO create a unique blend of Fela Kuti-inspired afrobeat, Cuban, Brazilian rhyhms and straight up funk. Guaranteed to move eben the most reluctant of feet!
