1) On Thursday, October 2, the world's first 2D animation done entirely with Flash was released on 30 digital screens in India. Jai Vigneshwar produced by Mayajaal Entertainment Limited is a cartoon dealing with the world of Lord Ganesha. More about the film in this article.

I'm not so surprised that this feat has been reached. Flash is a great tool that anyone can master in a matter of time. That's not to say, however, that anyone can make a good animation. In searching for videos for posts, I've come across some pretty bad animations. A lot of the problem with using a program like Flash is that some artists can't shake the feel that their animation was made in Flash. Sometimes it is just too clear that a cartoon is done in Flash. That reduces the originality and uniqueness of a piece of work, sadly.

Of course, that's not to say that Jai Vigneshwar is gonna be like that. Professionals who use the program know how to use it well. Flash is a great tool for cost effectiveness and speed.

2) Here's an article in the Wall Street Journal that brings up an issue I talked about a few posts ago. It is talking about the new wave of independent animations that have taking ground recently. More specifically, it's talking about Woodstock Film Festival in New York, that began on October 1. One of the animations being profiled was Berni's Doll by Yann Jouette.

More importantly, though, the article goes into detail about how cartoons have a serious side that is probably not palatable for the mainstream audience, which is more accustomed to such films as Shrek or the Pixar movies. Like I espoused a while ago, cartoons aren't just for kids. They are certainly another medium for artistic expression that certainly speaks to anyone.

Also, the article mentions animator Bill Plympton and the movie Persepolis. I won't divulge on either of those, since those are ripe for their own posts a bit later.

Engineering senior director Paul Betlem has confirmed that there is a flash player for your trusty iPhone, but the only catch is.....Mr. Steve Jobs' approval is required....

Now I assume you have the same questions I had when I heard of Minefield. Is it real? Is it FireFox? And can I trust it? I was able to quickly get answers for all those questions by installing the software. They are all yes. This is a "secret" type of beta for FireFox, which is why it's called Minefield. I suppose they gave it this name as the software is about as reliable as one, if you arent careful, it might blow you up.

So why would you download this browser? Well there is no real reason to get it unless you want a 64-Bit version of FireFox. There are some improvements to the software such as speed and most reliability. It scored 89/100 on the Acid3 compatability test. FireFox 3 only scored 71, and Internet Explorer 8 is in the negatives. (Visit http://acid3.acidtests.org for the test). So far the release is promising. I have it both for my Mac and my PC, running in 64-Bit on both (I assume it is on the Mac at least). Mozilla will have to work harder to reach the 100/100 goal which Safari 4 has achieved, and the iPhone Safari has achieved a 74/100.

Minefield will become the new FireFox 3.1 release, in which point Mozilla will be breaking off their development into two sections, further development of FF3.1, and FireFox 4.0. As mentioned before, this beta version seems to run quite well on my machines. There is still no Adobe Flash support, but then again we cannot expect to see a 64-Bit flash from Adobe before the next decade.

Above is a picture of the Minefield start page. As mentioned, Mozilla is serious when it comes to notifying users that Minefield is not a final or pre-release beta. Most may get scared off if they see this message, however there is no reason the average consumer should download this program anyway. FireFox 3 works well (after the first couple days of course), and most users should stick to that for the time being. However, if you feel the need to try this app out, you can download it from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minefield/. This will not override any installation of FireFox on your computer, however you cannot use either program while the other is running.

There is no current timeframe as to when 3.1 or 4.0 will be released. Beta and Alpha software releases for both FireFox 3.1 and Minefield are available to download with the most current builds. Visit http://www.mozilla.com for more information on each product.

T-Mobile unveiled yesterday G1 - the first phone ever to be powered by the new Google mobile operating system Android. This new mobile OS by Google is a threat to other mobile OSes such as Symbian, Windows Mobile, and even the iPhone as it is backed by the Open Handset Alliance (Includes HTC, Motorola, Samsun, LG, T-Mobile, and others), it is almost fully open source, it  is integrated with many of the Google apps and services such as Gmail, Calendar, and Maps, and it features an online application store. 

The question raised by many Flash developers is “what about Flash Lite?”. The Android SDK is available for anyone to develop applications for it for free, there are no restrictions whatsoever on what kind of application you can develop, and anyone can install any application they wish - This is unlike the iPhone SDK which prohibit developing any ‘runtime’ and applications can only be installed through iTunes. 

Bill Parry, a developer at Adobe, made a post on his blog saying that Adobe is “closely working” with Android licensees and that in the future “Android based devices will ship with Adobe Flash support”. Bill also says that the movement of Flash into more mobile devices is part of Adobe’s Open Screen Project.

This is surely good news for Flash Lite developers, especially as no signs can be seen for releasing Flash Lite on the iPhone even after the recent release of second version of the OS and even though reports were published three months ago about Adobe successfully running Flash Lite on the iPhone through emulation.

Flash Lite is currently available on Symbian and Windows Mobile, and according to Adobe it is available on 800 million devices shipped worldwide.

As a heavy user of various Google apps, I am very excited about Android, and the inevitable release of Flash on it will surely improve the chances of me getting an Android powered phone in the near future.

Shortcut Keys.  A very fundamental, simple concept, yet it cannot be stressed enough how helpful they can be.

Whenever a toolbar is clicked, time is lost moving the mouse.  It may not seem like a big deal, but you can save a lot of time and develop a rhythm that helps you design and yes, code in Flash.  I have found myself working faster, and the workflow is streamlined.

Take Flash CS3 for example.  The new Adobe Flash CS3 has many new features over Flash 8, and soon, the next version will be out, (there will be a post on this shortly). The shortcut keys have remained fundamentally the same for years throughout the history of the product.

Here are the most commonly used commands (this is not at all an exhaustive list)

Note: These shortcuts are the defaults.  Click Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts to change sets or individual shortcuts.

These commands apply while you are programming with Actionscript.  Most commands use ESC + Key Combination.

There are many more, but even using just these to start will help you tremendously. Almost every command has a shortcut key.

Customizing Keyboard Shortcuts

If you've used other Adobe software, such as photoshop or fireworks, you'll notice that many of the shortcuts are the same.  By default, Flash uses the Adobe Standard Set.  If you'd like to switch to older versions shortcuts, or import or create your own, you can go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts.

As you can see, each and every command can have a keyboard shortcut assigned to it.  You can also duplicate an existing set of commands and create a custom one.  When you assign commands, a message will show if the key has already been assigned to another command.

Keyboard shortcuts will give you more confidence in developing in Flash, and will help establish a rhythm without interupting the creative process.

When you open flash, the new file get open by default. You will get all the information about the dimensions of this file in the document window. You can change the settings according to your requirements.

6. Change its to 650 X 500 pixels size. Click OK.

Para desisntalar la version anterior de flash, en Ubuntu, ejecutamos el comando sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree . Luego, vamos al sitio de Adobe Labs y descargamos el flash player 10 para Linux. Como uso ubuntu, descargué el archivo tar.gz .

SlideRocket is a Flex-based site for designing and presenting slide presentations both online and offline (using Adobe AIR of course!).   This is one of the best examples of what RIAs are all about.  It doesn't get much more rich than this!  Note - many of the incredible 3D effects are utilizing PaperVision3D.

The CMS's are a great tool to be used when the information of a site needs to be updated frequently but also, when the final backend user doesn't have any programming skills or knowledge. Companies prefer to implement on their Websites or Intranet's, something that can be updated easily and with low knowledge instead of hiring someone to complete this task as it is more expensive.

The biggest CMS's we know are PHP or .NET based (Like Joomla, Alfresco, Drupal, Mambo,...), which, generally speaking, restricts somewhat the interactivity with the frontend public. Yet, there are some modules trying to deliver this interactivity to these kind of platforms, but still limited to some simple widgets/actions.

Flash is a great tool for rich content, not to speak on the high level of deployment. Therefore wouldn't make sense to forget it when developing new CMS platforms. These CMS are much more funny due to their interactivity and motion graphics, however the free solutions are few and and the majority still primitive.

Today i show you some of the available options in the market you should bear in mind before starting your next project.

Free CMS

1 - TypoFlash CMS

Typoflash.net have developed a new convenient interface where you can edit all elements of Flash websites either images or any other content. New images can be easily added to your Flash website and existing images can be replaced, re-sized and etc. Creating search engine friendly urls and editing existing ones isn’t a problem as well.

TypoFlash extends Typo3 CMS to manage any flash content. TypoFlash CMS has Metalanguage's support and it enables bookmarking and deep linking. Using this CMS you can edit html files of your website as well as Flash files.

2 - Silex

SILEX is a new kind of CMS (Content Management System), a mix between editing software and wiki based software. All multimedia file formats can be assembled in SILEX WYSIWYG editor for publishing website online, in a local computer and on CD-R.

3 - FlashDance

(From CNET) SAN FRANCISCO--Microsoft still isn't quite ready to release its new mobile browser, but I did get an advance look at Internet Explorer 6 for Windows Mobile at a Microsoft event Wednesday night.

Internet Explorer 6?

The biggest benefit will be the fact that it is the full IE 6 rendering engine, meaning that any page that renders properly in IE 6 on the PC should do just fine on Windows Mobile. Tim McDonough, a senior director in Microsoft's Windows Mobile unit, showed me the browser running the standard MSN home page.

Why won't use IE7 or a Mobile version of the upcoming IE8?

I saw the browser running on Windows Mobile Standard--meaning on a non-touch-screen device. The browser makes good use of a D-pad controller to go from link to link, but it's still not as elegant as on a touch screen. I'll be interested to see how the browser works on a touch-based Windows Mobile device, but am still not expecting navigation to be up to the iPhone level.

Navigation may be better on the iPhone, but IE 6 will have some advantages, such as full Flash support.

 

That's left Windows Mobile device makers scrambling to try to better compete against Apple's browsing experience. To fill the gap, many are turning to Opera's Windows Mobile browsing, which offers better navigation and rendering than the current mobile Internet Explorer.

Great to Hear Full Flash Support. But really IE6?

"The market today is really at 'Can I see a page?' Very quickly we're getting to 'Can I do something?'" he said. "That's where we will really shine."

Another interesting option on IE 6 is the ability to quickly shift from a site's mobile page to its standard desktop version. Just because IE 6 can show the full site, doesn't mean that's always what people want. It's particularly true in Europe where even so-called "unlimited" data plans typically have data caps that can easily be reached by loading a lot of standard Web pages. IE 6 toggles between mobile and standard Web pages by sending a different user agent, depending on which page type a user wants to see.

McDonough didn't offer much of an update on timing for IE 6, except to say that "it's still this year."

Sersiouly why IE6? Why won't they make a great mobile version of IE8..
