At St Andrews just now we’re working on importing a new website design into SiteManager

At St Andrews just now we're working on importing a new website design into SiteManager -- which is going very well thanks for asking -- but one task that can be a little tiresome is when adding new content that we want to make absolutely sure will only be published to a particular channel.

By default in SiteManager when you add a new content item it is added to all channels -- you can see this on the Channels tab (labeled 'Sites' in version 5.x of SiteManager) when adding content.

However, if you want to publish your content to only one channel (for example to a test channel) it can be quite a tedious task to untick all but one of the checkboxes, particularly if you're adding a lot of new content. We current have 26 channels, so that requires unchecking 25 boxes for each item of new content.

One of the wishlist items that we've already forwarded to TerminalFour is for the addition of an "Uncheck all" button. But in the meantime ...

Clear Fields

I've discovered an add-on for Firefox 3 (it does not work with older versions of Firefox) that does this task for you automatically. The add-on is called Clear Fields and adds a new button to your toolbar (it actually adds a few more but you can customize the toolbar to include only the options that you require):

A drop-down arrow to the right of the icon allows you to choose from:

Clear Text Fields

Clear Pass Fields

Clear Checkboxes

with the latter, obviously, being the option you require to uncheck the Channels checkboxes.

So now rather than having to click 25 times to remove each unrequired channel from the list, I now have two clicks:

Clear Checkboxes button

Select the channel that I do want

Caveat

A minor caveat about the Clear Fields add-on: it doesn't work with Firefox 3.0.1 without a little tweaking. If you are familiar with the construction of Firefox add-ons then simply tweak the install.rdf file, otherwise wait for the upgrade.

To make the tweak do the following:

Download the xpi file.

Rename the file, adding a .zip extension to the end, i.e. clear_fields-3.0.xpi.zip

Open the file in WinZip (or similar archiving application).

Extract the contents to a location of your choosing. You'll find a folder called chrome and two files: chrome.manifest and install.rdf.

Open install.rdf in your text editor of choice.

Change the line <em:maxVersion>3.0.0.*</em:maxVersion> to <em:maxVersion>3.0.1.*</em:maxVersion> then save the file.

Now use WinZip (or your archiving application of choice) to zip up those three files with no compression. If you use compression it will not work.

Rename the file again, back to its .xpi (pronounced 'zippy') extension.

Drag and drop the file onto an open Firefox window to begin installation.

It should only take a minute or two to do this ... and now you've got the ability to untick all the channel checkboxes in one fell swoop.

Add-On: Altoholic

Altoholic is is an Add-on which allows you to see information on your alts, such as bag space, known

Altoholic is is an Add-on which allows you to see information on your alts, such as bag space, known recipes, bank space, even their gear, most over multiple realms and cross-faction.

The main feature of the addon is the search functionality which allows users to search their alts' bags or loot tables in an Auction-House-like frame (see screenshots). All this with multiple-realms support

Here are the authors list of features as listed on its entry page on <a href="http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/12325/">Curse</a>.

- Account-wide data summary:

Characters' talents: only a summary, not a full build, I may implement this later on if there's demand.

Money, /played, rest xp for each character, subtotals by realm, and grand totals for the account.

Bag usage: see at a glance which characters should get bigger bags (bag size, free slots and types included)

Characters' skills: skill summary on one screen, namely the 2 main professions + the 3 secondary skills as well as riding. I may add more if there's demand.

Reputations: a list of all the reputations of the current realm's characters. You can see at a glance if all your alts are at least honored with Honor Hold if you want to get the new 2.4 blue PVP set. Suggestions on how to gring reputations will be available soon.

- View containers (bags, bank, keyring) of all alts, on all realms.

- Guild banks : You have 10 alts in 10 different guilds on the same server, all of them with access to a guild bank ? Not a problem, you can see them all here. Multiple realms supported.

- E-mail: allows you to see which alts have mail without having to reconnect them. The addon will tell you when mail is about to expire on a character. Threshold configurable (up to 15 days). Multiple realm support as well. Mails sent to a known alt (one you've logged on at least once) will be visible in the addon.

- Equipment: See the equipment of the current realm's alts in one screen. Very useful when purchasing stuff for your alts at the AH. Multiple realms supported. Right-clicking any equipment piece will allow you to find an upgrade, this feature is similar to the official wow armory feature, and is quite performant, even though it doesn't match the accuracy of the official one.

- Options: the option screen is still a bit minimal, I'll add more options along the way depending on user requests.

- Search: the most important feature of the addon, it uses an AH-like frame to display search results. You can either search bags on the current realm, on all realms, or a loot table. The loot table is a table based on AtlasLoot 4.04 which contains only item id's, and therefore keeps memory usage minimal. As an indicator, with 10 alts (+bank) + guild bank + loot table, the addon only takes 2.3 mb of memory. The addon has gained weight since the integration of some libraries, but this will ensure support for multiple languages in the future. I expect to support deDE soon.

The Search menu allows you to find items based on their name (even partial), level, type or rarity, almost like at the AH.

As of 2.4.010, it is also possible to search known recipes.

- Quest Log: See the quest logs of all your alts, as well as an indication of which alts are on a specific quest.

- Suggestions: Currently, only profession leveling suggestions are available when mousing over your current level in a specific profession. Suggestions are based on the leveling guides posted on the official US forums (credit goes to their respective authors). The addon also suggests you where to quest/grind xp depending on your character level.

Suggestions were also added for the most recent factions. More to come later.

- Auction house: You can see which auctions/bids you've placed with an alt without being logged in or being at the AH.

- Professions: You can browse all known recipes in a Thottbot like frame (see screenshot).

So now that you've skimmed the list of features, let me tell you how I use Altoholic.

[caption id="attachment_11" align="alignnone" width="510" caption="Altoholic Summary Screen"][/caption]

With as many alts as I have and as much chaos as there is in life, I'm always forgetting which alt needs mats for what profession or I want to see if something sold in the Auction House. I also use the account summary screen (see the above image) to tell me when a particular alt might need some play time - if they're substantially undergeared or have an extraordinary amount of rested Exp that they could burn. On another account (with a raiding endgame Holy Priest, an endgame Enhancement Shaman and an endgame Combat Rogue), I use Altoholic to help me manage crafting upgrades or see what mat I need to farm.

Okay as a hunter you have probably already heard of the pet emote addon.

Below are some of the variations I have made to what my stable of pets will emote at random intervals.

You can make these changes yourself very simply by opening the "localization LUA file" (in the pet emote addon folder) with notepad scrolling down to the English section and changing what is already there - being very very careful not to delete any of the little symbols because that will break the code - and saving it again.

Why do this? - well because it adds flavour to your game play.

Every time I see 'wrath rubs up against you' as a random emote from my pet I actually like him a little more, having real cats I get a kinda lion mane-rub fantasy flash ... (I know I know - that's weird, but still ... cool.) And I admit that I really rather disliked my scorpid until it started blowing snot bubbles and doing floozy dances for me :)

So first up we have The Warp. And that is a good example of the other part of the pet emote addon that allows you to change how a beasties family name is displayed, for example I changed the family from warpstalker to 'lizard' using the addon's in game customization - which amuses many a toon I party with because the warps name is 'Thing' (after some kids book about a crazy little pet dinosaur) anyway as a result what they see on their screens when the addon be working is 'fessran's pet lizard Thing' before every emote, and a more apt description of the bizarre and gruesome warp I cannot think of.

Okay the emote has 3 levels of random emote to express whether a pet is unhappy, content or happy - which is rather awesome.

Warp Stalker
[1] =
hisses hungrily
clambers around anxiously
snaps an insect out of the air

[2] =
waits patiently for some food.
stretches her throat upwards while searching for something to eat.
looks for water.
shakes her spines impatiently.

[3] =
grins vacantly.
cranes her neck with pleasure.
gives you a sly look.
rolls her tounge out and licks an eyeball.
flicks her tounge around her muzzle.
tosses her horns.
sniffs at the breeze.
lashes her tail-fin.
rolls one eye back to stare at you.
burps.
bares a japing maw of needle sharp fangs.
licks a scale on her flank.
stands motionless with jaws hanging open.

Scorpid
[1] =
snatches around at the air with its pinchers. Hunger!
hisses and chatters angrily.

[2] =
scurries around anxiously.
chatters with its pinchers half-heartedly.
looks unimpressed.

[3] =
waves its pinchers in the air like a cheap floozy.
scurries around excitedly.
blows a snot bubble.
gives you a weird look.
makes a zoom-zoom noise... freak.
burbles happily.
does the happy dance.

Cat (biggest selection because it is my most used pet currently)
[1] =
is going to rip Fessran's face off if the kibble is not served shortly.
roars hungrily.
eyeballs the local wildlife.
is giving you the 'starved kitten' look.
looks at you... hungry.
chews some grass and looks miserable.

[2] =
flexes his claws and growls hungrily.
rumbles unhappily.
looks unsatisfied.
claws at her boots...
looks around hungry.
lashes his tail.
looks agitated and mean.

[3] =
huffs happily.
coughs up a hairball... hrrruk!
rubs up against you.
shakes his mane.
shakes his jowls, sending spittle flying in all directions.
licks a paw.
grooms quietly.
is ready and willing to eviscerate.
starts an extensive catlick.
glances around.
blows a snot bubble.
flicks an ear.
prowls back and forth.
scents the air.
twitches his whiskers.
pounces on a beetle.
flicks his tail.
slinks into the shadows.
bares his fangs.
has a stretch and yawns contentedly.
chews on her cloak.
rolls his shoulder blades and stretches.

Currently I have to put together a selection for the carrion bird (now there's a 'procrastinate-at-work' task if ever I have heard of one.)

I've found out Google Analytics makes websites slow when using Firefox with the NoScript addon. Apparently the "allow domain" get's a bit confused since the analytics script use more than the first domain to run the scripts.

More detail and a suggested temporary solution can be found in my main Internet blog:

http://www.fireflake.com/tech/2008/07/18/slow-loading-with-google-analytics/

Hope it helps if you're having problems with it. Unfortunately if you are experiencing it on a site you're visiting there is nothing you can do about it. I've found the easiest work around is to hit "stop" and then "go" to the page again. The scripts doesnt seem to lock the second time the page is loaded.

Sandy and GMC Administrator Chronic had only just finished announcing the release of a Firefox 3.0 c

Sandy and GMC Administrator Chronic had only just finished announcing the release of a Firefox 3.0 compatible Instant Play plug-in when the Mozilla team decided to update its browser yesterday to version 3.0.1. For users still using version 3.0, they will be constantly reminded (in the form of a corner pop-up message) that they should upgrade to 3.0.1. Pretty soon most users will be up to date, and will be without a working Instant Play plug-in yet again.

The plug-in in its current state was not designed to install on future browser versions. It's very unfortunate that just hours after YoYo Games took time to release the plug-in, it had already become obsolete. For users looking for temporary/work-around solutions, see below. At this time, there is no statement from YoYo Games to indicate if an when a new version of the plug-in will be available.

Chronic used this method to override compatibility of the plug-in:

Download the addon (YoYo.xpi, right click, save as.)
Rename from YoYo.xpi to YoYo.zip
Unzip to a new folder
Open Install.rdf in Wordpad
Find this line: em:maxVersion="3.0.*.*" />
Change it to: em:maxVersion="3.*" />

Once you're done with that close and save the file and rezip all of the files in the folder and rename it to YoYo.xpi then drag it in to a firefox window to install it (uninstall the previous version first).

Now, I'm not sure that this will 100% fix the issue, but its working for me. So do this only if you must, otherwise wait for an official solution.

For users with the nightly tester tools add-on, you shouldn't have to make any modifications, a simple press of the 'override compatibility' button should do the trick.

---

It's times like these that I wonder about the sanity of Sony's Marketting Department, I mean we've had years upon years of terrible ads for the Playstation brand and just when you thought it couldn't get worse, it does. I think in some of these cases we were able to brush these faults off as "corporate" not getting modern trends or just trying too hard, but this? This is just too good to not bring up.

It sure seems that Sony took inspiration from a... competitor, doesn't it? I can't quite place it but every time I look at this image I have a strange case of déjà vu.

EDIT: Some users were having trouble with the links. Sorry for that everyone, they now work as they should.

In the interest of conserving time and title space, iPlay will now refer to the official YoYo Games

In the interest of conserving time and title space, iPlay will now refer to the official YoYo Games Instant Play plugin in any future articles.

For anyone who uses Firefox 3, it's quite obvious that iPlay does not share your enthusiasm for browser upgrades. When you visit the YoYo Games site, you'll have no choice to download games, and instead will be prompted to "Play Now", a feature incompatible with the world-record breaking Mozilla software.

Although the YoYo games team is taking their time to fix the problem, there are now several users have discovered work-arounds. One of Scorptek's very own programmers, ari_aaron, modified the YoYo Games .xpi plug-in installer to make it fully compatible with version 3 of Firefox. Unfortunately, after contacting YoYo Games with 'high priority' to demonstrate the easy fix, the YoYo Games staff neglected to respond to our support ticket and seemed to have ignored it altogether.

Also to our dismay, the YoYo Games website 'Terms of Service' strictly prohibits us from distributing the modified plug-in to others :(.

So the next best thing we can do is recommend an alternative work-around which keeps your browser safe and secure (un-like the common about:config 'hack' which could potentially put your web browser at risk).

1) Download the Nightly Tester Tools add-on for Firefox
2) Upon reboot (of Firefox), install the YoYo Games plug-in and click Force Install

--

I thought I would also take time to mention Caniac's continuing efforts to send in news tips (so if you want to win this month's prize I suggest you get cracking). Caniac wanted to let our readers know there are some new developments to G-Flash, an oldie project long assumed dead until now.

According to Caniac, about 20 new functions have been added to the Game Maker to Flash converter, and the project now has four new members on the team. It is hopeful that with some help, the project can be brought back to life again.

Check out the G-Flash subforum here.

Woh.. Bener-bener rasa Firefox!!

So, what is the difference? Just at the appearance?

Lha dalah??

Grats everyone with the kills on our first time in ZA!

Thanks to focused raiders and positive attitudes(and some seasoned veterans) we were able to successfully take down the first two bosses of Zul'Aman--and only one try on each of the bosses! It's like Karazhan all over again.

With the fast reset time of ZA (only 3 days reset time), we are able to return to the instance very soon. Like... Wednesday soon. Players should be online by 7:30pm server time so we can get started asap.

Please also don't forget that Kara is scheduled for tomorrow night. A one night clear is easily obtainable and should not be hard for us to accomplish, so let's do it to it and grab some loot/badges. :)

And just another reminder... please grab the GroupCalendar addon. Information and a link for downloading can be found here.

Spent a lot of time trying out several things to resolve the earlier mentioned issue I encountered when the InfoPanel Addon was installed.

The image on the left show to incorrect tooltip, the one on the right displays the correct version of the tooltip.

I finally 'solved' this issue by adding the following code after the real code that adds all the wanted information to the tooltip and just before calling GameTooltip:Show()

local line = getglobal( GameTooltip:GetName().."TextRight"..GameTooltip:NumLines() );
line:SetWidth( line:GetStringWidth()+16 );
line:SetHeight( 12 );
line:SetJustifyH( "RIGHT" );

I haven't released a new version of UberInventory yet on Curse.com, first need to do a bit more testing to see if this really resolves the issue. But so far it appears to be working

Semplicemente geniale!

Yesterday or better said early this morning I have updated two of my World of Warcraft Addons, BagTi

Yesterday or better said early this morning I have updated two of my World of Warcraft Addons, BagTips and MailTips.

I had installed the Addon InfoPanel and from that moment one the tooltips displayed by both BagTips and MailTips did not like right anymore. The names of the items from either a bag or a mail message was displayed using two lines within the tooltip instead of just one. After a bit of searching I found that InfoPanel uses the pipeline character in some displayed text (plugins RaidInfo and Zone).

InfoPanel_SetText(f,
                  "%.1f |cffffff00|||r %.1f",
                  x * 100,
                  y * 100);

Somehow this has an influence of information added to tooltips and fontstrings that use the texture tag to add images to textstring

tooltip:AddDoubleLine( " |T"..value.texture..":0|t "..key,
                       value.count,
                       r, g, b );

It appears that when you are using the method and using the code InfoPanel uses the actual width for the fontstring is not calculated correctly. To quickly workaround this I just add two spaces after the item name like so

tooltip:AddDoubleLine( " |T"..value.texture..":0|t "..key.." ",
                       value.count,
                       r, g, b );

and everything works again as expected.

Now I only need to fix UberInventory, because it has similar issues. Hopefully I can get those issues resolved today as well.

Ever since the release of Firefox 3 I seem to a rekindled interest into the Firefox Add-ons out ther

Ever since the release of Firefox 3 I seem to a rekindled interest into the Firefox Add-ons out there. Currently I have a total of 10 Addons installed. Here is a quick run down of all of ones I got installed.

AdBlock Plus

This one tries to block adverts from being displayed. Based on filter it decides whether or not a certain image or plugin is considered an adverts and if so it hides (or removes) the element from the page. So you never have to search between the adverts to find the content you wanted to read.

Web Developer

This one I really like. Form my daytime job I need to build web sites from time to time. But not that often that I consider myself to be an expert. This addon got tons of goodies that will help you view the layout of your site, validate your (x)HTML code, switch between style sheets and much, much more.

Just a few days ago I used it to finally make some of my web pages pass the XHTML 1.0 strict test. Of course I could have done it without using the addon, but it surely helped me getting the issues resolved much quicker, than I could have done manually.

Firebug

To be honest I haven't used this addon a lot yet, but it looks very promising. What I have seen so far looks nice. Definitely the inspect window is very powerful, on the left you see the structure of your web page and on the right it displays the related style sheet information. Within the style sheet you can see what gets inherited from other parts and gets ignored or has an override.

Combined with Web Developer Firefox becomes a very fully featured development environment for HTML designing/coding.

Flagfox

Just a little neat addon show a country flag for the sites you visit. Very funny to see, certainly when visiting web sites from larger companies, where all of there data centers are located, just as an example

www.oracle.com Finland
forums.oracle.com United States
otn.oracle.com Finland
blogs.oracle.com Singapore

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer

This one I really love. For my work I travel from customer to customer. Depending on the customer I can either use my company laptop or I need to work on a machine the customer provides me. This is all fine, but every time it is a pain to the bookmarks I need to do my job. Previously I just copied the bookmarks.html file to an USB stick or mailed it to myself. But more often than not I forget to copy or mail the latest version of my bookmarks.
With this addon I can always access my bookmarks. You just add/remove bookmarks within Firefox, press a key and they get synchronized to the server. From another PC you do the same and everything gets nicely synchronized. I have been using it for about a week now and I already find myself

You need to signup for this service to make it work or move it to a private server.

Nuke Anything Enhanced

Remove sections from web pages. Useful when you want to print a web page has not implemented a style sheet for printing the page. Using the addon you can remove to side banners and all the other clutter that really does not need to get printed.

ScribeFire

ScribeFire is a blog editor that integrates with your browser and lets you easily post to your blog. See also on of my earlier posts on ScribeFire.

Used ScribeFire again to post the blog message ;)

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon discovers web sites based on your interests, learns what you like and brings you more. Just as Foxmarks you need to sign up for a service to be able to use it. So far I like it, this has brought me to some really nice pages that I would never have visited. I find myself pressing the 'Stumble!' button constantly, just wondering what comes next. It is just like an addiction, you know you need to do other stuff but just can't wait to see what gem might be lurking around the corner.

TwitterFox

Not only does TwitterFox notify you of updates to your friends' statuses of Twitter, but it also allows to you make posts to Twitter, reply to posts. I am just to lazy to visit all of the individual Twitter pages, now the updates popup when the addon checks for them.

User Agent Switcher

Fake your User Agent. Comes in handy when for instance a certain web site only will show a page when it detects Internet Explorer. Just select 'Internet Explorer' from the 'User Agent Switcher' menu and revisit the site. None the wiser :).
This addon generates errors within the Error Console of Firefox, but it seems to work regardless.

How much does your web browser do for you?

Firefox users should take some time to customize their browser. First, some definitions within the Firefox context:

add-on: "extend[s] Firefox, letting you personalize your browsing experience." (from Firefox Add-on Homepage)

extension: adds new features and functionality to your browser

theme: changes the look & feel of your browser

dictionary: provides spell-check support for a language

search engine: adds new search targets to the search engine box in the top right corner of the application (by default)

Start customizing your browser by heading to the Firefox Add-on homepage. A good place to start is the Popular Add-ons listing.

Here are some useful Firefox extensions:

Adblock Plus

Forcastfox

StumbleUpon

Better Gmail 2

Firebug

Greasemonkey

Sage or Sage-Too

FireFTP

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer

Tab Counter

Add-ons usually work for most operating systems; check an add-on's notes for exceptions. Warning: Trust your source before downloading and installing any add-on.
